LTG'S WELCOME Hello Llamas!! I am happy to announce that we are so close to the end of the school year. ONLY ONE MONTH LEFT. NO. A FEW WEEKS!! Although I am excited that school is over, I am sad that I won’t be able to see my fellow Key Clubbers at weekly meetings :’( but at least we have these upcoming events that are included in this month’s edition of the LLAMA LEGENDS!! Remember that Key Club is a year long club and there are more fun activities in the summer <3

EDITOR'S NOTE Hey Llamas!! School is almost ending, so hang in there!!! I am super stoked to be your new DNE, so look out for the monthly newsletters to come throughout the year :DÂ

Throughout the term, I want to make my newsletters based on the wonders of nature because the world is beautiful in its natural state. I'm starting this month off with stars because stargazing in a place without light pollution has always been on my bucket list.

I'm glad to have met some of you at the May DCM but I hope to see more faces at future DCMs! I'm still very socially awkward but don't be scared to approach me if you do see me :) Since I'm still new to making newsletters, feedback will be greatly appreciated! I'm always searching for ways to improve :D

See you in the next issue!

CLUB REPORTS

20 16

ALAMEDA This was the first month, where the new officers have taken over and currently there are not any problems. This week we also attended District Convention, where we were able to sell our llama mercha and made $451.50. Next year, we should bring more hoodies as a suggestion because many people wanted to purchase them but we did not have enough stock but after going to District Convention and meeting new people and attending workshops, I believe this term should go smoothly because we already have a good amount of events prepared for next month.

21

ARROYO Over the month of April, our club had five events total. For our first event, we had the town and clean up festival. With a total of five attendees, the turnout was pretty good for our club. It was reported that all five of our attendees had a fun time at this event. On the same day, we had the April DWS: Jumping Bunny Festival, with a total of six attendees. At the event, the attendees were able to meet and bond with other members in the division. Then, we recently had our ukelele festival event with a total of seven members in attendance. This event was an overall great turnout because all the volunteers had a great time. In addition, we had our annual district convention this month and seven members in attendance. At DCON, members attended workshops, general sessions and government ball. It was reported that all the members in attendance had an overall great time and most of the attendees plan on returning for next year's district convention. Finally, we had our joint banquet with division 2 north and that night was filled with many emotions. It was very fun to celebrate the end of the term with fellow key club members. Overall, the month of april had an amazing turnout and we hope to improve even more in the future months.

CASTRO VALLEY The month of April has been really exciting. We elected a new board and began a new term. At DCON, Jane got editor of the year and Anthony got member of the year. Many of our other officers received outstanding. This year we volunteered at the anunal Cherry Blossom Festival. Members were split into groups, and stationed to guard the gates and intersections. Others guided new attendees ajd watched over sections of the festival. In additional to volunteering, members were able to watch the parade with front row seats. At the April DWS, members were responsible to watch over the bouncy houses and stands. There was also a giant Easter Bunny walking around taking pictures with attendees. During the Glenn Park Festival, members arrived early to help set up vendors. Throughout the day, the members guarded the gates and managed bouncy houses full of kids as funds were raised for an SF school program. This was a fun event with lovely musicians and bomtastic tunes. Near the end of April, we released the Fundraising Chair applications and are currently looking over the responses.

17 23

ENCINAL This month we had no events. However, elections and banquet proved to be a huge success this month. Elections ran smoothly, everyone ran unopposed except for the position for president. While it was a close call, Sarah, our president from our last term, won. At banquet, we were pleasantly surprised with multiple awards! One of our awards that we received were for Llama Points, exemplifying our club's punctuality in terms of turning in our reports on time. Furthermore, our present and former officers received awards! Jackson recieved the Outstanding Editor award, Mandy received the Outstanding Treasurer, Lisa received Outstanding Secretary, and Jeffrey Smith received Outstanding Advisor. For the upcoming month, we'll definitely be having events as well as a board meeting to clear up any miscommunications.

24

17

KIPP KING Although, KIPP is not active this week, but there are many events that were planned for the month of May.

SAN LORENZO For the month of April, San Lorenzo had multiple events with a local elementray school, members enjoy interacting with the younger students and putting on a fun event for them. To celebrate earth day in the month of April we had two service events, the first being an earth day clean up around our local neighborhood and an oaklnad zoo clean up event in which member helped tend to the land around the oakland zoo. Although we had a low turn out at the events we hope to do more in advertising uocoming  to get a larger group of people to attend.

APRIL

CLUB

REPORT

By: Meilin Beloney, Alameda For the month of April, Alameda Key Club was able to volunteer at eight events, including the Eggster Easter Event with Lowell Key Club, the 2019 Best Buddies Friendship Walk, Pick It Up, Garden Creation and Maintenance at the Historic House twice, Food Pantry, the Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt, the 2019 MS Walk, and the April DWS, the Jumpin’ Bunny Festival. With Easter coming up, wevolunteered at various Easter-themed events, including the Eggster Easter Event and the Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt, where Key Clubbers assisted with Easter egg hunts. At the Eggster Easter Event, Alameda and Lowell Key Clubbers put together colorful Easter eggs, then led young children in an egg hunt. At the Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt, officers stood on street corners and directed children into participating shops, where they were given Easter eggs and candy. Also, in the month of April, Alameda Key Club was able to attend District Convention 2019, where we were awarded with a lot of recognition for the 2018-2019 term. These awards included Diamond Distinguished Club, Club of the Year, Early Bird Dues, Member Retention, and Trick-Or-Treat for Unicef. Overall, Alameda Key Clubbers were able to not only give back to our community through various service events, but we also cheered our hearts out and increased club bonds as we celebrated the past term.

DCON

2K18

By: Alexandra Reyes and Mylan Vu, Arroyo On April 12-14 2019, Key club held their annual District Convention (DCON) in Los Angeles. This district convention was open to Key Clubbers from California, Hawaii, and Nevada to celebrate their hard work and achievements. Members who were at the event attended: general and education sessions, Kiwanis Family Expo, dinners, the Governor’s Ball, and much more. In addition to that, they vote for the incoming District Executive Board. Members also take part in icebreakers, spirit competitions, and had many opportunities to make new friends! We interviewed two Key Clubbers about their experience this year at DCON; here is what they had to say:

28

Kaitlyn Thai: Arroyo Key Club’s Secretary This was Kaitlyn’s second year attending DCON as an officer for Key Club at her school and had lots of fun. From competing for the spirit stick to attending general sessions and workshops, she was able to enjoy herself and bond with other members, while learning more about Key Club and its goals for the upcoming term. She said that, "Everyone was super loud and spirited. I loved the energy that they all had.” Although Kaitlyn was only planning on staying with the people from her school, it turns out that she was able to make plenty of new friends from her region and even from places as far as Nevada and Hawaii. She made friends during the workshops, at the Governor’s Ball, and on introduction day. Most of the people were very kind, friendly, and sociable. However, the people she bonded with the most were the members from San Leandro High School. They were very nice and clicked instantly. Kaitlyn made many new memories and had fun with all of them; they really bonded and are now close friends. During the Final Session, the new District Executive Board was announced and everyone said their final goodbyes to the seniors, unfortunately marking the end of their Key Club Days. This was a time full of emotions and crying for Kaitlyn and all of the members; they were going to miss them very much. Everyone was excited and happy for the new, installed board, but sad to see the seniors go. It was a bittersweet feeling of both joy and sorrow. All in all, Kaitlyn had an amazing experience at DCON. She participated in many group activities and workshops, interacted with new people, and made lots of friends. It was a great opportunity to learn about Key Club, all while socializing with others and having a good time. She will be attending DCON again next year and recommends that everyone should go too.

29

Jin Onia: San Leandro High School’s Secretary This was Jin Onia’s first time attending DCON with his school of San Leandro. He had enjoyed the time socializing with other regions, doing activities during general meetings, going to the gov ball and much more. He said his overall experience of DCON was that it was fun meeting new people and getting closer to the people there. He recommends other people to go to DCON to get the key club experience and for a fun time. On the first day they arrived at DCON, Jin said it was a long drive there but had fun riding with Arroyo and San Lorenzo in the same van. As they got into their rooms and got settled in, he said, “we were with region 9 and it was just hella fun” They also had to do an activity where they had to find people with the same favorite color as you, same birthday, etc. This allowed them to meet new people and have fun with others. On day two, he described it as a crazy day. He went to gov ball which is a dance for all the people attending. They had games set up or either people could dance. Jin first started playing uno with other attendees and eventually moved on to the dance. Although it was loud and crowded, he still managed to have a fun time. On the last day, people said their last goodbyes and took pictures with each other to cherish the memories and fun they had. Jin had created close bonds with others and it became an emotional time for everyone. With the opportunity and experience to attend DCON, Jin had an amazing time creating new friendships with other schools that had the same passion of being apart of key club. He was able to really bond with new people and is still close with them today. He also had fun doing all the activities and never had a dull moment being there. DCON is a great experience that all key club members should have and will not regret.

A

WHOLESOME

EASTER

By: Jane Chang, Castro Valley The weekend of the April DWS has arrived! Volunteers were happy to celebrate Easter by helping the Dunsmuir Estate run The Jumpin’ Bunny Festival. Upon arrival, we were kindly greeted by the event organizers who gave us the tasks of watching over bouncy houses, stands, or dress up as the Easter Bunny. I chose to put on the Easter Bunny costume because I thought that it would be a fun experience and the children would like it. I walked around the festival and occasionally sat down at a bench where kids came by to take pictures. Although it was hot and stuffy in the costume, it was enjoyable to watch the wholesome reaction of kids who believed that the Easter Bunny had come alive.

MAY

2018

By: Melanie Siu, KIPP King On Cinco de Mayo, KIPP King Key Club had the pleasure of bringing 10 volunteers to the Bay Bridge Half Marathon! We unpacked medals, organized runners’ gear, hung medals on runners who crossed the finish line, passed out glasses, and cheered the runners on. While at it, we were able to meet up and bond with some San Leandro and Castro Valley Key Clubbers! So much love was spread around as we grew closer with llamas from other schools. Although volunteers had to not only start their shift at 6:30am, but push through 5 hours of service, we were able to build a strong bond and overall enjoyed our time serving others. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces and hearing all the “thank yous” from the runners for volunteering made us all feel proud and appreciated for coming out. This inspired us to participate in more service events, knowing the fact that we’re helping in making people’s lives easier and happier.
