Happy September, Llamas!

With school being here, please time manage and set your priorities. I know school can feel extremely overwhelming-especially for the underclassmen with their coursework, all the juniors with their testing & classes, seniors with college apps. Remember to take time for yourself, meditate, go out with friends, exercise, whatever it takes to make you a teensy bit more happier. Club Rush is happening across all schools, so make sure to reach out to your friends and anyone you see to join the wonderful organization we call Key Club. One of my best memories as a freshman was getting recruited by Key Clubbers who were so amazing and inclusive, and winning free prizes at the first meeting :) I'm pumped to see the Llamacy at Fall Rally North on October 20th! Get your friends to go, and come out to our spirit social on the 22nd to learn the cheers and do some service. Don't forget to order our Lavender Spirit Gear by September 21st to your Club President. For those going to RTC, I genuinely hope that this will be one of your many Key Club Moments. When I experienced RTC for the first time two years ago, it was the event that made me fall in love with Key Club. The campfire, the woods, the inclusive atmosphere, the AMAZING food??!??! Everything about RTC made me more passionate about serving and being part of our Ohana. I met some amazing friends through RTC, and I do hope that you will experience the awe and wonder that I felt for Key Club. Thank you for reading this edition of the Llama Legends. See you all next month! With a Spark for Service, Vivian Luong Division 2 South Lieutenant Governor

Hello Llamas! School has officially been back in session! I hope this school year is exciting, with minimal stress, engrossing classes, and of course straight As :) This edition of the "Llama Legends" is inspired by Back to School season. I wanted to capture some typical school features, hence the chalkboard, doodles, and other education related paraphernalia throughout this newsletter. I know school can sometimes feel stressful and even overwhelming, but always try to enjoy life, STAY POSITIVE, and get as much sleep as possible. Set your priorities straight and don't let the little things get to you :) Sincerely, Vy Truong Division 2 South News Editor 2018-2019 P.S. I'm seriously down to help with any math homework if I'm free; I swear this is not a joke.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of Key Club? A: My favorite aspect of Key Club is being able to serve the community with my friends! I feel like Key Club has really helped build me into a better version of myself.

Tiffany Kwong Alameda

Q: What kind of service events do you like to attend? A: I enjoy attending events where I can improve my skills and learn new things. I only went to one gardening event, but even with the tiring work I was able to learn more about how to take care of a garden.

ISSUE 1.4 | PAGE 10

Q: What is your favorite Key Club memory? A: II don't really have a favorite memory, as there were so many good ones. But one of them has to be when I was at the Oakland marathon helping hand out water. It was a bit chaotic with a lot of spilling, but we all had a good laugh.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of Key Club? A: My favorite aspect of Key Club is having a lot of events during the summer and being able to bond with new people.

David Liang Arroyo

Q: What kind of service events do you like to attend? A: I like to attend service events that help other schools.

Q: What is your favorite Key Club memory? A: My favorite Key Club memory was when I went to the exploratorium in Sf and got a tour after I helped to volunteer.

ISSUE 1.4 | PAGE 11

Q: What is your favorite aspect of Key Club? A: This is probably a common answer, but the overall enthusiasm of Key Club. The thought of a club and volunteer work seemed to me as mostly credit or advantages for my college transcript, until I joined Key Club. But upon getting into the club for a few months, I’ve seen through how passionate the members are, and especially some of my friends who are officers. The friendly atmosphere of the club makes it feel welcoming and active, which also helped when deciding which club to choose.

Kiaran Lau Castro Valley

Q: What kind of service events do you like to attend? A: I think the events I like to attend the most are shift-oriented events. I’m not sure what specifically, but I would like events that help put into perspective what a real job feels like. One event I attended was the Chinatown festival, which was an entirely exhausting 8 hour shift (If I can recall). Despite its tiring experience, it really helped overlook the reality of working, as well as team building / social skills.

ISSUE 1.4 | PAGE 12

Q: What is your favorite Key Club memory? A: Being introduced to Key Club is my favorite. The cheerful attitude and atmosphere of the club really infected my mood, and somehow just transferred over to me. Especially my friends which helped me on club day, who I previously mentioned in question 1. People like Jane, Kristy, Emmy, Anthony, really made me feel involved and part of Key Club.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of Key Club? A: I love how many clubs and divisions can come together and help the community while having fun.

Q: What kind of service events do you like to attend? A: I like to attend a lot of Food Bank events, and also Meals on Wheels.

Hillary Ma Encinal

Q: What is your favorite Key Club memory? A: I don't have a specific memory, but I love hanging out with friends at service events.

club report The month of July has been a very slow month for Alameda Key Club. To start off the month we had our monthly Pick It Up in Oakland Chinatown and cleaned the streets of cigarettes and other waste items. We also helped at the Cohen Bray House and once again helped them weed plants as well as create new heathy soil. We were excited to have an interclub event with Arroyo Key Club and helped at the Exploratorium. We also participated in the division service event at the X Strides Walk and held posters up along the course and helped walkers with information regarding the event. Lastly, we held a poster making event for club rush at Alameda High.

plant exchange On July 29, Arroyo Key Club members had the pleasure of volunteering with The Plant Exchange in Oakland. Volunteers were separated to help with different stuffs. They filled up water tanks and helped to water the trees on the hill. The trees had poles on the sides, so water could get all the way down to the roots. They also got rid of dead plants and put the empty containers back on the shelves. Other people cleaned the vases by wiping the interior and exterior with a wet sponge soaked with soap to get rid of the dust and dirt. Afterward, they washed off the soap with the hose and the vases on the cart to dry, and they put back the hose and wrapped it. They later brushed off debris from felt used to hang plants, put the wet ones aside and cleaned the dry ones, so people can reuse them to put in new plants. Additionally, they picked the wood and tanbark off and put them in baskets. However, through this event, they were able to connect with nature and learned that it is important to take care of the environment.

night life - bay area night market

The Bay Area Night Market grew its fame for three years and this year, Castro Valley Key Club was delighted for this opportunity to volunteer. This special occasion happens by the Newpark Mall and it runs for two days. The event coordinator was kind enough to come by Castro Valley for an orientation so all of us volunteers could get a good understanding of our jobs weeks before the event. There were many positions such as ticket scanners, stamp checkers, entrance monitors, vendor assistants, and exit monitors. Although there was only one event coordinator, she made sure that we were left with other assistants that knew what to do in case we couldn’t find her. I volunteered both days with a friend and both days were packed with people. It was fun being a ticket scanner despite people coming in and out all the time. The hours seemed endless but volunteering with friends and getting free food in the end made it all the worth. It was also nice to see happy faces as they walk in to see all the booths of food and entertainment. It was a wonderful event to volunteer for, so I hope to be there again next year!

officer bonding This month there was a unique event involving multiple clubs from D2S. It was the Officer Bonding Event. The event kicked off with an introduction segment. Everyone introduced themselves and tried to figure out what everyone had in common. After the introductions, everyone played games that focused on teamwork. Some games involved punishments to spice up the event. To wrap the event up, everyone made leis.

july dws Our club members and officers were proud to represent San Leandro Key Club at July’s DWS! At this event, volunteers helped out at the X Strides Walk. Here, they set up for the walk and signed in runners/walkers. Members all over the division cheered on participants and bonded amongst each other. Although it was a relatively short event, volunteers got plenty of work in. Members expressed how happy and excited they were to give a helping hand for such a great cause, and get to bond with other lavender llamas from across the east bay. Overall, it was a successful event and we were happy to support such enthusiastic runners/walkers!
