IT IS FINALLY SUMMER! I hope everyone was able to finish the school year strong. Now, it is time for everyone to take a break from schoolwork and academics, but it is also a time to serve your community MORE. Key Club is probably the only high-school service organization that does not stop when school stops. Every month their will still be several service and social events for you all to attend. Be sure to join the Division Facebook group to stay updated on all the upcoming events. Big thank you to everyone that came out to the May DCM/Bowling Fundraiser! We had 72 people in attendance to the DCM, and raised $233 for Pediatric Trauma Program in that one day! I hope you all had as much fun as I did that day! The next big Division event will be Officer Training Conference, also known as OTC on Saturday, June 28th 2014 from 10AM-3:30PM. The June DCM will also be held at this event. At OTC, members and officers can learn and be trained on the responsibilities and duties of each officer position so they can better serve their clubs as officers along with several informational and leadership building workshops. Some of these include: Public Speaking, Effective Planning and Time Management, Overview of the Kiwanis Family, Show Your Spirit and more! I want to see YOU at OTC to learn how to become a better leader to serve your home, school, and community.

Here are some Updates on the Division Goals:

Members: 1327/1500 Service Hours: 1704/18,000 Money Raised for PTP: approximately $848/$3000 Money Raised for Project Eliminate: $243/ $2,000

We have already made significant progress on our goals for this term, and this summer will be the time to really advance towards our goals. This summer we will have numerous fundraisers and service events so we can DOUBLE or even TRIPLE the amount of service hours and money we raise for PTP this summer. We will not be able to this without YOUR help. I need all of you to stay active in Key Club, and attend Club and Division events! This way we can reach our goals, and serve our community to the best of our ability. Keep a look out for upcoming Division events by joining the Facebook Group page or Google Reflector, and keep a look out for the NEW DIVISION T-SHIRTS, CREWNECKS, AND SWEATSHIRTS!!! (They will be released SOON!)

> LTG CHALLENGE FOR THE SUMMER I challenge each and every one of you to serve 30 HOURS OF SERVICE this summer. (This challenge started from the day school ended and will continue until the day school begins again.) Your time is ticking. Don’t just sit around.

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND SERVE! Stomping through for service,

Daanyaal Kumar

Lieutenant Governor 2014-15 Division 35 East, Region 13 California-Nevada-Hawaii District Key Club International

D35E & D35W

BANQUET This event took place at Covina Lanes, and gave our members a chance to dress up and spend one last night celebrating our senior club members. We had four members attend, all of whom enjoyed themselves, and the food! Many photos and memories were created between our members and also between our club and the other dapper, young Key Clubbers of the evening. During the ceremony, our Past President, Diana Gutierrez, won an award for Outstanding Officer, while one of our members, Kristine Balo, was awarded for her service as Division Secretary. We are proud of these successful, graduated members, and will miss them and their contributions to our club dearly. Also, prior to the awards, the current club president (myself) performed a song for the banquet’s entertainment. The event was an excellent way to seal off the year and send off our cherished Noble Seniors, as well as welcome the incoming cabinet and leaders of the new term. ROZLIND SILVA, PRESIDENT OF NOGALES KEY CLUB

It’s that time of year again, the time of goodbyes. All of our past officers have retired and now it is up to us, the new officers to replace them. Naturally, they have no replacements; it would be impossible to find people as spirited, as quirky, as dedicated as them, but as new officers we certainly must try. During our end of year banquet, D35E had its fair share of emotion. With our Lt.G. and senior officers graduating, it was a very sentimental affair. Especially with the recognition ceremony of handing out certificates to our most dedicated members and officers, it was a time of farewells. This may sound cliché (pardon my lack of extensive vocabulary) but the banquet was so bittersweet, like dark chocolate. Having our senior members say goodbye was just so beautiful, you know? So we made the seniors all promise, “This isn’t good-bye, ok? This is just a ‘see you later!’” Let’s not forget the gratitude. How could we have gotten so far without all of our wonderful members? Our assiduous officers? Our trusty advisers? Where would we be? Our past Lt.G. Andy Wong expressed his gratitude for his Executive Assistant’s diligence over the past year by handing our new Lt. G. Daanyaal Kumar a plaque.

“Overall, when I received the plaque for my accomplishments as Executive Assistant, I felt so much joy and emotion rush over me. It was such a wonderful moment knowing that Andy truly appreciated all the hard work and hours I spent working under and for him and the Division, and that my term as an Executive Assistant was truly over,” said Daanyaal

in our interview as he recounted his feelings when he received the plaque of honor. At the end of the year banquet, an open mic was set out to the audience; it was totally symbolic of Key Club. Let me explain. There are the brave performers who are willing to take the stage and conduct the audience to song. These performers are our leaders who lead Key Club to service through example. And no matter the duration of the song, all songs are sweet when sung by the heart.

Similarly, Key Club performs acts of service great and small and the reason all our service is awesome is because service through Key Club is done sincerely. The best part is the audience’s good attitude; they keep the performers confidant. Likewise, it is the members’ indomitable spirit that keeps the leadership team running. As a member of the officer team, I must admit, Key Club is only worth it because of the members. Members look to the officers for guidance, but at the end of the year, it is the officers who learn most from the members. Thanks for a great year, Key Club members, fellow officers, and advisers. I can’t wait for you to hand me another one! JANIS SHIN, VP OF ROWLAND KEY CLUB

MCKINLEY’S CHILDREN CENTER Hi Key Clubbers! My name is Allen Chen and I am the President of Diamond Bar Key Club. We do a variety of service events but one of my favorite is the Mckinley’s Children Center. Mckinley’s Children Center is a foster home for abused and abandoned children and we volunteer by helping them prepare for their duck race. The duck race is Mckinley’s major event each year to raise money for these children and there is a lot to be done. Members of DB Key Club volunteered 5 times in 3 months to remove stickers, cut new stickers, and organize the ducks with new stickers. In all, we relabeled all 12,000 ducks for the big race at Raging Waters. Although the work involved a lot of repetition, members had the opportunity to sit down with one another and socialize while doing service! ALLEN CHEN | PRESIDENT OF DIAMOND BAR KEY CLUB

SPARK

RUN One big event that Bonita High School participated in was the Spark Run at Fairplex in Pomona, California. The Spark Run at Fairplex is an annual event where runners run in the nighttime, fully equipped with glowing t-shirts and other accessories. As they run/walk, they are glowing with neon colors that leave a trail. Runners have fun as they do this with their family and friends. This year at Fairplex, Kaskade, an electronic dance music (EDM) star, put on a stellar performance during and after the event. While also having a ton of fun, Bonita Key Club still performed their duties as volunteers as they helped with registration booths and guided the runners. We helped the community because many local charities were recipients of donations from this run. It was a great experience because volunteers felt a camaraderie as they helped the community and had fun at the same time. PHILLIP CHUNG, VP OF BONITA KEY CLUB

WALNUT JUNE RECAP HIGH SCHOOL

KEY CLUB

WRITTEN BY: BRIAN D. HYUN VP OF WALNUT KEY CLUB

W

ith less than one month of school remaining, KEY members of the Walnut chapter hurry to fulfill their fifteen point requirement. It is during this time that general meetings teem with enthusiastic members fighting for “first-come-first-serve spots on event roll sheets. Expecting such delay, officers communicate with event supervisors all around the city (and those neighboring Walnut), establishing possible dates for member service. To help with the effort, cabinet leaders coordinate with other club members and officers, searching for any recognized organization seeking additional help. This was only the start.

12

The Walnut chapter started off the month of June with the annual Westhoff Family Festival at Westhoff Elementary School. Members manned game booths and coordinated all festival activities. Alisha Chen, a Walnut KEY member, recounts her experience: “I’ve attended Westhoff for elementary school so it was nice to see all of my old teachers and principal again! It was fun to interact with the kids at the game booths.” On the following Saturday, the Walnut chapter participated in the Tri-Events Triathlon near San Dimas, California. Volunteers helped to register and label all participants. Jacob Lai, a four-year Walnut KEY clubber, comments, “I enjoyed the experience. It was fun and you get to spend time with your friends.” He helped cheer, pass out water, give goody bags, and point runners to the right direction. After the triathlon ended, he and other fellow KEY clubbers went around cleaning up the course, picking up trash and taking down signs. On Sunday, May 18, Walnut High School Key Club sponsored the Diamond Bar Youth Symphony Orchestra’s benefit concert for Isaiah’s Rock: ‘Two Hearts in One.’ Volunteers helped to usher and coordinate the event. Zane Landin, Walnut KEY cabinet leader, helped to “clear the [stage] pathway, moving and rearranging chairs for each musical piece.” It was a cooperative effort supported by Walnut Valley Kiwanis, Diamond Bar High School Key Club, and the Korean American Federation of East LA. This last month was also dedicated towards funding cancer awareness. The Walnut chapter helped to fundraise money and collect cans for the non-profit organization of Relay for Life. (We have also created a summer team, KEY CLUB, to earn and donate money to this organization.) Apart from such short-term goals, the Walnut chapter began a donation drive during the second semester of this year to collect 250 pairs of socks for the non-profit organization of INSAN, and, fortunately, we were able to exceed that limit, collecting, in total, roughly 300 pairs of socks. This last month, we provided members with limitless opportunities to volunteer in and around their communities; it was another successful season. Within a couple of months, the next year approaches with new challenges and opportunities. Utilizing this summer to prepare for the new year is our very first challenge. Exploring the world of social media to expand our reach to potential members and club bonding events with cabinet members will be learning experiences for our growing club. But…this is only the start.

onita High School had a very eventful month full of service, despite the fact that the school year was coming to an end. Members were still able to come to the events because of proper communications between the members and the officers. One way we did so was by going over all the summer events during the last school meeting so that the members could take note of the future events. Another way was through Remind101, where officers can send a one way text to members about upcoming events. Bonita Key Club is helping out with is the Glendora Kiwanians Leadership Academy. This academy is run by the Glendora Kiwanians and they instruct and guide young children who are interested how to be good leaders. At this one week program, there are multiple workshops where they learn about different things like inclusiveness and public speaking, which are important traits that a leader must have. While doing this, the children had fun with peers that they have or may have not met before. Bonita Key Club assisted the Kiwanians in setting up the workshops and assisting the instructors. We also talked to the children and got to know them. It was a great experience because we had fun talking to them that we were able to see young children with such potential and yearning to learn.

LEAGUE OF LEGENDS

TOURNAMENT South Hills League Tournament! League of Legends being an extremely popular game, we thought why not hold a fundraising tournament. After weeks of planning, we had six teams compete in our tournament and everyone had a great time. The tournament was divided into two different divisions to make sure the games were fair. The outcome of the tournament was extremely successful but most of all, everyone had a great time competing. The reason why this tournament was an awesome event was because the competition was balanced and everyone played to have a good time. In the end, new friends were made and we raised 200$ for PTP! JUSTIN WONG, VICE PRESIDENT OF SOUTH HILLS KEY CLUB

RELAY FOR LIFE Relay for Life was at La Puente Park and it was an event dedicated to cancer awareness and cancer survivors. Two members from our club attended and served unlimited pancake breakfasts to the residents. It was so inspiring to see how many cancer survivors came, and we were very happy to serve them a free meal. The members themselves also got to take part in the celebratory eating of the Kiwanis’ deliciously cooked pancakes, which made the event even more rewarding. ROZLIND SILVA, PRESIDENT OF NOGALES KEY CLUB

PTP

pediatric trauma program

WHAT IS PTP? PTP stands for Pediatric Trauma Program. Pediatric Trauma, otherwise known as unintentional injury, is the leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under in the United States. More children die from unintentional injury than from any other diseases combined. WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF PEDIATRIC TRAUMA? A child who suffers from head or even brain injury because he or she was not wearing a bicycle helmet. A baby who was injured from tumbling down the stairs because no safety gate was present. A child who drowns in a household pool because proper alarms and fencing were not installed. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF PTP? The Pediatric Trauma Program is based off the principle that all injuries are predictable and preventable. Together, the CNH District aims to develop local projects to reduce the number of children who are killed or injured by trauma. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY DONATED TO PTP? The funds donated to PTP provide grants to partner hospital, which allows them to create or expand community outreach programs, and the funds provide grants to Kiwanis to allow them to help more children in more communities. The funds are also used to provide PTP safety items to families to ensure that all children live happy, healthy, and safe lives.

Our division raised over $500 from the Bowling Fundraiser and Button Sales! 16

Through June 9th – 13th, we will be posting a picture of one of our officers with a quote and background information.
