OCTOBER DCM
PRE-FALL RALLY 1 //vivian tiet, member recognition coordinator
O
n October 18, 2014, we held our monthly DCM, and I could not have been more excited than ever. After our DCM, we were to hold our Pre Fall Rally to prepare our lovely elephants for Fall Rally in November, where we will compete to win the spirit stick! As I saw over two hundred members come together to unite through spirit, I could only feel joy radiating from the group. As our members came to Creekside Park, we began to play ice breakers, which are some of my favorite things to do. We played speed dating, where each member got to make at least five new friends. Jukebox, one of my favorite ice breakers, was also played, and I was so happy to see all of the energy and enthusiasm that our Division’s members possessed. I had never seen so many members at a DCM. As the DCM started, I continued to gaze in awe at the number of people at our event. It was great to hear all of the wonderful things that individual clubs were doing, and was amazing to find out about our Division’s upcoming events. As our Member Recognition Coordinator, I was pleased to help award the officer, member, and club of the month with gold and black ribbon leis. Our Division is full of so many gifted and passionate individuals. After the DCM, our Division Leadership Team taught our Fall Rally cheers to our members. While teaching the cheers, I almost completely lost my voice, but it was totally worth it! My group had so much fun mastering the art of elephant spirit, and even battled each other to see who could cheer the loudest and longest. Later, all of the groups came together in one huge mass to practice as a whole, just as we would during the real Fall Rally. At first, we were off to a rocky start, but when it came time to record the cheer, we all sounded like one beautiful, cohesive, group. I was so proud! Our first Pre Fall Rally was a huge success, and I am super excited for our next Pre Fall Rally, and Fall Rally itself.

// REGION 13 TRAINING CONFERENCE
REGION 13 TRAINING CONFERENCE 8

T
his past month South Hills Key Club attended Region 13 Training Conference, which was a great event for our officers and members to truly understand the responsibilities and significance of what it takes to be an officer. Our club is becoming more populated with loyal members, so we did have a decent amount of attendance. Region 13 Training Conference was a key event to attend for our club. Both South Hills officers and members that were present correctly learned what it took to have an officer position. Overall, everyone had an enchanting time, whether it was making new friends, learning cheers, or receiving knowledge about what key club truly is.

t the Region Training Conference on September 27th, Key Clubbers from Region 13 came together to learn more about Key Club and officer positions through various workshops. RTC was amazing because I was able to reunite and meet new Key Clubbers in the Region. I was also able to refresh my memory on some officer information that would help me better lead my members for the remaining time in my term. One thing that stood out to me at this year’s RTC compared to last year was the sparkly crowns and sticker stars. Everyone received a sparkly crown at registration and it was cute to see everyone rock their crowns. The sticky stars were also really cool because it made everyone feel special with their names decorated and unique. Overall, this years RTC really stood out to me and I learned a lot from it.

// Illegal sign hunting
SNACK ORGANIZING
& “illegal” sign hunting //eric cortez, vp @ northview key club
O
n September 20, a few of us from Northview signed up to help set up a seminar for Parent’s Place at Citrus College. It was a standard service event: set up tables, sign people in, serve food, that kind of stuff. There was nothing very exciting until towards the end of the event when we BROKE THE LAW. However, I’ll get to that later. The day started with us filling trays with various snacks, such as cheese crackers and granola bars. This sounds like it would be an easy task that shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, but a couple of our OCD members (Cynthia and Almendra) decided that each row of snacks needed to be arranged by flavor and by color. There also needed to be an even amount of snacks in each row. Once all of their crazy snacks organizing demands were satisfied, we got to sign people in. Almendra got to use her Spanish skills to sign in all the Spanish-speaking attendees and give them weird little magical boxes that translated the seminar to Spanish. The rest of the day was pretty laid back. We served food, I was given the honor of cutting up a pineapple, Mark, Cynthia, and Danielle folded up tables, and we packed up the leftover food—typical volunteering stuff. Wait, I’m forgetting something. Oh yea, WE BROKE THE LAW. Well what we did wasn’t exactly the most outrageous thing ever. It was a hot day and we had to walk around the whole campus looking for signs. They were located near the main streets so we decided to all get in my car and drive to get to the signs, since we’re all super lazy. Since I’m only 17 this is slightly illegal. I could have gone to jail but that’s a risk I’m willing to take for Key Club. Overall this was a really fun service event and hopefully they allow us to go back and do some more illegal activities. Maybe next time we’ll rob them or something (and give everything we steal to PTP. Because even though we’re cold-hearted criminals, we still care about babies).

n Saturday, September 20th, Key Club went to the Del Haven Community Center in La Puente to help beautify the area. During this event, we helped trim bushes, fix the ramp, trimmed the trees, and spread soil in the front area. Besides D35E, the D35W Seals were also there. It was a nice project to be able to help with. During this event, I experienced my first service event. Being able to help make the place nicer for future visitors left me with a sense of satisfaction. This event allowed me to meet other members from nearby schools, some of which already know the members of our own key club. It was a wonderful experience overall. The people were very friendly and provided us with all the tools we needed for the job. They were also very patient and clear with their directions and helped us when we asked. They were also very kind as to provide us with a delicious meal and a nice place to eat. The experience at Del Haven Community Center was a great first event. I got to get familiar with the people I’ll be working on through the year, and I got a taste of what key club does. Having the support of the adults as well as the more experienced key clubbers was great. This was a fantastic event and I hope the rest are just as great, if not better.

// RIBBON LEI WORKSHOP
ribbon lei workshop //rozlind silva, president @ nogales key club
O
ne event our members had the pleasure of attending was the September DCM/Ribbon Lei Workshop. The event was enjoyable and effective in encouraging the Nogales Key Clubbers to bond with other Key Clubbers in the division. During the day, members participated in ice breaker games and a small spirit session prior to the ribbon making workshop. They stomped, clapped, and screamed their hearts out, enjoying their first experience with the new cheers. Admittedly, making the ribbon leis was not easy for all. However, the help that was generously given by everyone around truly showed the nature of Key Club and the close relationships Division 35 East maintains with all the students in the division. In addition to the elephants coming together to successfully triumph a task, they have now also acquired a stylish new accessory to add on to their Fall Rally gear! Our members were truly excited to take home their ribbon leis, and were grateful for the pleasant experience that was sitting down with the division to collectively make them all together.

O
nce again, DBHS Key Club has attended another Isaiah’s Rock to help out the homeless. One of the many tasks that we completed was helping to sort beans into bags for distribution. We also helped to clean out the enormous pantry that was filled with canned goods, sauces, and other foods that would eventually be donated to the needy. We sorted the food by getting rid of all the expired food and organized everything back on to the shelves. Since we had so many members show up to help, we finished pretty quickly so we socialized for a while and got to know each other better. We completed a lot for the organization and we will be waiting until the next event!

new school year means the first of the Key Club meetings! Bonita High School Key Club held our first meeting of the school year and we are happy to say that most of our sign up prospects came to the meeting. We had over 200 kids show up to the gymnasium here at Bonita High School for what would be the first of our weekly meetings. At the meeting we talked about what Key Club stands for and what we do as a club for those that didn’t hear that from us at Club Rush. We also talked about the process of becoming an official member; they must fill out an application that details their personal information along with the application due of $13. Although it is still a while away, we talked about the upcoming Fall Rally and some other big events to look out for. It was an enjoyable time for the officers to meet all the new prospective members of Bonita High School Key Club, even though it proved to be difficult to communicate to all the members without a megaphone or microphone.
