// LTG’S MESSAGE

HELLO ELEPHANTS!

Most of our Club Rushes have happened, and many of you have started to experience your first Key Club meeting of this new school year. It is such an exciting time where every meeting has huge amounts of people, everyone is interested in Key Club, and it is a time to recruit numerous new members so they can experience the magic that is Key Club. As meetings start, be sure to tell all your friends, and get all of the freshmen to get involved in Key Club. Key Club is a place where anyone and everyone is accepted, and maybe you can go grab one of the students that seems to be myself at lunch, and invite him to the next Key Club meeting. You never know, but that simple act of kindness may change that student’s life forever. In Key Club, service is a large aspect, but it is not the only aspect. Key Club is a place where you can, not only learn valuable lessons through service, but also through the people you meet, the leadership positions you encounter, and the obsta-

cles you face. Key Club is much more than a service organization, it becomes a place where a student can truly learn, develop, and find himself or herself, if they choose to take advantage of what Key Club has to offer. What does Key Club offer? Key Club offers numerous service events, many of which that truly give you that “warm” feeling when you feel like you have truly helped someone. If you do not know what I am talking about, then you need to attend a Key Club service event. At an event called Isaiah’s Rock, where we distribute food to the poor, the smiles and “thank yous” you get from the families you serve are the most heartwarming. It truly reminds you that helping at events like these, is what community service is about, and how it truly does help others. Other than service events, Key Club offers you a chance to meet numerous people from numerous schools. In Division 35 East, you as a member have the opportunity to meet members from 10 different schools in the area. It is an amazing way to socialize with people outside your

. . . g t L he school, and make new friends you never thought you would have. I have made so many amazing friends because of Key Club. Lastly, Key Club allows all of its members to become leaders. Key Club offers the most leadership positions of all clubs I have seen. Besides being a club officer, you can be a task coordinator, event planner, graphics design chair, to Lieutenant Governor, District Governor, all the way to International President. We truly are a high-school led organization, and it is crazy how a small 9th grader who is scared of speaking in front of crowds, can become a phenomenal public speaker, and speak in front of 80 members at each meeting because of the leadership skills and opportunities he has received from Key Club.

I hope you, if you are not a Key Club member, to consider joining this wonderful club, and getting the chance to experience how crazy cool Key Club truly is!

STOMPING THROUGH FOR SERVICE,

Daanyaal Kumar Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor

RIBBON LEI WORKSHOP

//justin wong, vp @ south hills key club

August DCM/ Summer Olympics held at Via Verde Park was an extremely enjoyable event. All the key clubbers had an exciting time playing all sorts of mini games. The mini games attracted every attending key clubber and got them out of their comfort zone. The wide variety of mini games brought a lot of new key clubbers together and a lot of new friends were made. After the mini games everyone cooled off with some sweet ice cream sundaes. The cool treat was a great way to end the hot August DCM.

// CLUB RUSH

Club Rush

//bonita high school

School has started! There are tons of people at school looking to join clubs, especially the new freshmen. Bonita High School just had their club rush and who participated none other than the school’s largest club… Key Club! Club rush is a two day event this year, and it is safe to say that the first day has been a huge success. The line for people signing up stretched through most of the quad, with returning members signing up and those that have never heard of Key Club before. There were seasoned Key Club members but there were also those that asked us if we made “keys”. We had over two hundred people sign up for Key Club, and we cannot wait for the first meeting of the year which is next Thursday.

On September 5th, Rowland High School participated in its school’s club exposition. Full of fun and publicity, Key Club’s booth sported a tri-fold and popsicle sticks in addition to club applications. Key Club also featured props with which students could take photos, helping to raise publicity about Key Club. Officers dressed for the occasion, notably Blaze Lim for going all out in his cape and hat. Also, Key Club had a thunderous spirit battle with Rowland High School’s Interact Club showing exactly which club dominated the school. There was a gusto of cheers, chants, and spirit. The officer board is currently preparing for a grand time at the club’s first meeting of the school year and anticipating many prospective members to show up and see what Key Club is all about. This year, Rowland Key Club is expecting lots of new members, as always.

// SPECIAL OLYMPICS / ISAIAH’S ROCK

POMONA VALLEY SPECIAL OLYMPICS //bonita high school Now that school just began recently, Bonita High School Key Club has been assisting Pomona Valley Special Olympics in training their athletes. We go out to different parks and schools every Saturday to assist the coaches. We would be there to provide moral support and time the athletes. It is a very exciting and humbling experience because these athletes sure are speedy! These athletes are exceptionally fast despite the circumstances. They are all preparing for the end of the year where there will be regional Olympics held, where select athletes move on to bigger events. We are very excited to be involved in helping champions in the making!

ISAIAH’S ROCK //alice pan, vp of diamond bar key club On August 30, Diamond Bar Key Club helped out at Isaiah’s Rock in Chino Hills. Having already attended this event several times, we already knew what to do and so we started right away. This time, we helped sort and package a variety of goods into plastic baggies. We packaged foods like peanuts, oats, beans, etc. We put together so many bags that we used up several crates in order to fill all of them. Some Key Clubbers even discovered a new way to sort oats. They poked a hole in the middle of a big sack of oats and let it spill out into plastic bags. This method proved to be faster than hand scooping it, however, some of the oats did not end up anywhere near the bags. After this job, we headed off to complete different tasks, such as unloading bread, cleaning objects, and moving crates around. Once all the jobs were completed, all the Key Clubbers headed over to sit down and we played some icebreakers and had some popsicles to kill the heat. It was a very fun event and I can’t wait to until the next one!

// WALNUT CABINET TRAINING

DON’T BURN THE MARSHMALLOW! //brian hyun,

Remember to wear your cabinet t-shirts every Wednesday. Have your attendance sheet. Make enough slips. Associate with your members and get to know them. Be professional. Have fun. // These responsibilities were introduced to Walnut’s new cabinet group on the twenty-second of August, the day of Walnut Key Club’s first cabinet training/dinner/bonfire event of the year at Lemon Creek Bicentennial Park in Walnut. The session started with a brief introduction of the basics of Key Club (by Kelly Seto, Walnut’s President): the role of the club, division, and district; the beliefs of Key Club International; the significance of the LTG and the other division officers. After a quick briefing session, the

officers, then, transitioned into the duties required of a cabinet leader. Emphasizing the importance of the cabinet leader (as the “middle man” of the club that reports information from the members to the officers and vice-versa), Kevin Chen and Brian Hyun, Walnut’s co-Vice Presidents, grilled each and every one of them with hypothetical scenarios (i.e. confused members not knowing who and where their cabinet leaders were at the beginning of the year). Each cabinet leader was forced to think on the spot and find a solution to every problem that was announced (in a fast, business-like manner). Many were uncertain as to what they were supposed to say; however, the officers guided each cab-

vp of walnut key club

inet leader through the thought processes leading to a professional solution. After this, Vivian Yen, Walnut’s Treasurer, and Frances Lai, Walnut’s Secretary, orally presented the division’s events agenda, highlighting “key” events such as Fall Rally, CTC, and DCON. Throughout the session the officers quizzed the group on the information they learned with Hershey’s Kisses. But, the officers were wary to give out too much candy since they and the cabinet group arranged a potluck. The rest of the evening was spent in fellowship, with the cabinet leaders getting to know each other and roasting marshmallows and making smores in the fire pit. This was...DAY ONE.

// SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE / 626 NIGHT MARKET

INSAN: “Back 2 school supplies” drive //karrie tan, vp of diamond bar key club For the month of September, Diamond Bar High School’s Key Club participated in a fundraising drive for “Back 2 School Supplies” in front of VONS with an organization called INSAN. INAN has two missions, to improve the conditions of the homeless by providing them with nutritious meals and clothing and to improve education for children by tutoring them and supplying them with the tools they need to succeed! We had two shifts, 9:00AM1:30PM and 1:30PM-5:30PM. The weather was SUPER hot, but anything for service, am I right or am I right?? Although many people passed us, even more stopped to hear our mission and to help our cause! Several adults not only donated, but also signed up to volunteer with the organization to help tutor kids in Pomona and to help feed the homeless! It was a very rewarding day for me to learn that we were all willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. As INSAN’s motto goes:

“Investing in the best resource we have - the mankind”

The word INSAN (pronounced as in-saan) meaning human or mankind; reflects the message of humanity above any person, caste, state, language, region, and religion. It really is amazing that so many people are still willing to be a part of solution to the problem!

626 NIGHT MARKET! //northview key club At the 626 Night Market, we facilitated the Info Booth. We linked guests with the official application, directed people to specific vendors, restrooms, and ATMs, distributed swag to those who checked in on Yelp, and confirmed and offered awards to Pokéball scavenger hunt winners. We worked alongside Circle K members, responded enthusiastically to several welcome “How Do You Feel?” questions, and occasionally stood standby to the directions of the friendly Night Market team.
