. . . e g a s s e m s ' r o t i d E HELLO ELEPHANTS! I am proud to say that WE WON THE SPIRIT STICK! I am so amazed at the dedication and the hard work us elephants have shown this year. At Fall Rally, we showed other divisions how united and spirited we are and how proud we are to be part of the elephant family. We also raised a whopping number of $3,600 for PTP for Fall Rally! That is absolutely amazing! Congratulations elephants, and keep a look out for the next special edition newsletter which will cover Fall Rally completely!

// LTG’S MESSAGE

. . . g t L e h t From HELLO ELEPHANTS! WE HAVE DONE IT. This is the FIRST time in HISTORY of Division 35 East where we have won the Spirit Stick at Fall Rally. For those of you who attended Fall Rally, thank you for cheering your hearts out to get us that spirit stick. This could not have been done unless each and every one of you cheered as loud and proud as you did. It was a crazy day, and I hope you all had as much fun as I did. Fall Rally is a crazy experience, and I am so glad to say that my last Fall Rally was by far my best one, and I can thank all of you elephants for that. Also, we raised $3,600 dollars for Pediatric Trauma Program for Fall Rally, and we bought two LTGs! LTG Mariela Carrillo from Division 10 North for $1,000, and you bought me for $2,600. For those of you were not able to attend Fall Rally, you can see the video of our cheers on the Division 35 East Facebook Page, and also the next Division Newsletter will be a special edition covering Fall Rally in depth!

Now that Fall Rally is behind us, we must turn back and focus on service. With Thanksgiving, and the Holiday season coming up, there will be tons of service events available. This is the best time to be serving the community because you will be able to help some of the less fortunate have a wonderful holiday season, and enjoy their holidays as much as you guys do. Make sure to check out all the events on the Division Facebook Page, and ask your club presidents about service events! For those of you who keep asking for Division Hoodies and crewnecks, we will be releasing the orders soon after Thanksgiving break. We are currently in the process of adding a new club to Division 35 East. Covina High School will be joining the 35 East family very soon, and once they are officially added, we will be adding their name to the merchandise, and doing re-orders!

This term is more than halfway done. Because of this, it is getting close to the time to find my successor. If you are interesting in becoming the next Lieutenant Governor of Division 35 East, please contact me so I can give you more information on how to run, and what steps you should be taking! If you are unsure if you want to run or not, please talk to me, and I can give you a more in-depth look into my duties to see if being LTG is the right step for you. I want to remind you all again on how hon- STOMPING THROUGH FOR SERVICE, ored and proud I am to say I am serving the Division 35 East elephants. Fall Rally this year, we have shown the CNH District that Division 35 East our elephant stomp is LOUD and PROUD and can be heard everywhere! It is be- Lieutenant Governor cause 35 East is what? // WORLD PREMATURITY DAY

N

ovember 17th is World Prematurity Day. On this day, March of Dimes teams up with organizations around the world -- including the Kiwanis Family -- to raise awareness about the issue of prematurity and how it can be prevented. According to March of Dimes research, 15 million babies are born too soon every year. More than 1 million babies die before their first birthday due to complications from premature birth and many of those who do survive, face a lifetime of disability. Premature birth kills 1 baby every 30 seconds. More children die as a result of premature birth than from AIDS, malaria, or diarrhea. However, more than 70% of deaths can be prevented without intensive care. Premature birth can be prevented by raising awareness, educating girls and women, educating front-line workers, equipping clinics, and funding research.

T

his month South Hills Key Club focused on getting ready for Fall Rally. We had a decent amount of South Hills members attend the Pre-Fall Rally session. At the Pre-Fall Rally, our members had a chance to truly show off their elephant pride. We spent hours practicing our Division 35 East cheers with lots of spirit and preparing our spirit gear. We really got to understand the true meaning of spirit and how fun it is to be a Key Clubber!

// AIDs WALK

AIDs WALK:

SPIRIT FOR SERVICE! T

//rozlind silva,

president @ nogales key club

his month, Nogales Key Club members had the complete honor to volunteer at the Los Angeles AIDs Walk members. They had the task of cheering on all of the participants who crossed the AIDs Walk finish line. After arriving to the event and receiving their shirts, Key Club members enthusiastically cheered on walkers and plentifully handed each one a bag, filled with stickers and their certificate of completion. Of course, Key Club members didn’t stop just there! On top of cheering and handing walkers their certificates, the Key Club members gladly gave all the walkers high fives and showered them in praised. Matthew, a Nogales Key Club Member, happily exclaimed that he thought that this was “the best job ever!” After long hours of cheering and high fives, our Nogales Key Club members all decided to dine and bond together. They met many other Key Clubbers from all different divisions, and made new Key Clubber friends to help make the service event even more spirited. All in all, the service event was successful and very, very spirited!

L

et’s face it, running sucks. It’s tiring, it’s sweaty, and frankly it’s boring. Why run if you can sit at home and watch T.V? This isn’t the case at the world’s happiest 5K! The Color Run was a blast for Bonita Key Club at Fairplex Fairgrounds. The Color Run was founded in March of 2011 as an event to promote healthiness and happiness by bringing the community together to participate in the “Happiest 5k on the Planet”. It creates a sense of healthiness because running is after all a form of exercise. It creates a sense of happiness because who doesn’t like to get color splashed on them! The rainbow is a beautiful things and everyone that participates in the color run essentially becomes a human rainbow. Although it is a for-profit event, the Color Run donates a lot of its profits to different charities. Just by having fun, we are helping a cause. See all those cool pictures of people splashing different paints over walls to create some cool abstract piece of art? Bonita volunteers basically did that except it was on top of actual people! It was an amazing experience and very stress relieving. Now that school has started, students have piles and piles of work to do, and nothing is more relieving that being at the color run. Who can be stressed out around people laughing because they have all the colors of the rainbow on them? Bonita Key Club certainly looks forward to volunteering here again next year.

// BREAD OF ANGELS

Bread of Angels //janis shin, vice president @ john a. rowland key club

A

re Panera and Starbucks only for those who can afford it? Nope. Not when it’s provided by angels! At Rowland Key Club’s Bread of Angel’s event, our volunteers woke up early in the morning to greet the less fortunate with bread from Panera and warm cups of Starbucks coffee. It was held from seven in the morning to twelve in the afternoon of the eighth of November at St. Angela de Merici Church. The event was a refreshing outlook on compassion as volunteers set up the tables, served food and beverages, and socialized with whom they served. One of the adult volunteers at the Bread of Angels event was a teacher and she gave a speech illustrating the difference between fairness and justice. For breakfast, cereal, bread, coffee, and juice were provided. Lunch was hot pizza, vegetables and oranges. Our Key Club volunteers successfully provided lunch to over a hundred people! They were kind and cheerful and definitely helped provide an optimistic mood at the event. Once lunch had been consumed, volunteers helped clean up the venue. Because the volunteers liked the event so much, one of the officers Kevin Huo took the initiative and arranged with the coordinator of Bread of Angels for Rowland Key Club to attend more Bread of Angels events. The Bread of Angels event was very enlightening and uplifting as it taught Rowland Key Clubbers compassion and that stopping hunger is possible: all we have to do is wake up early on Saturdays and go to St. Angela Merici’s church!

//kevin huang, webmaster @ diamond bar key club

or the month of October, Diamond Bar High School volunteered at the Isaiah’s Rock event in Chino Hills. The members helped package grains and seeds that would be distributed to the people in need. We also helped reorganize the shelves where they store the canned foods. Out of date foods were packaged and placed on a pallet, and the canned foods that were still good were organized and categorized on the shelves, according to the types of foods. The members also piled bread and pastry onto boxes, stacked them up and moved them to a corner. After volunteering, we played with the adorable pets as a reward for the hard work. The members had fun, and for most of them it was their first time volunteering at Isaiah’s Rock, and they said that they would continue to attend this kind of event.

t the Buckboard Parade, we stood guard at separate numbered checkpoints along the main parade route. We assisted the parade participants (e.g. cheerleading squad) assigned to each number and walked alongside our designated groups to make sure everything went smoothly. We observed all activity on the sidewalks to make sure parade visitors and participants were safe, ensuring that children did not run into the streets to disrupt the flow of the parade.
