ELLO ELEPHANTS,

I hope you all are enjoying your summer! By now, summer school is over for most of you, and it is finally time to take a breather from all that schoolwork. The best part is now you can devote all your time to SERVICE, and FUNDRASISING for out preferred charities such as PTP or The Eliminate Project! For those of you who have been attending the summer events, I hope you all have been having fun with all the elephants at these events. I hope you all learned something new about leadership, yourself, or about an officer position you plan on running for the following year at Officer Training Conference 2014. I know it was a long day, but hopefully it was also beneficial.

A big event that occurred these past few weeks was International Convention 2014. Key Clubbers from all over the world attended this event! People from all over the United States, people from Aruba, Jamaica, and parts of Europe were there. It was an unforgettable experience, and it also allowed us to see how Key Club works on a greater scale. Also, at International Convention, we were able to elect our new International Board. Give a warm welcome to the new International President Maria Palazzolo, and the new International Vice President Kevin Zhang. These two along with the international trustees that were elected at Interntional Convention will be leading us this next administrative year to new heights! If you were

unable to attend International Convention this year, I hope you will be able to experience it next year at International Convention 2015 in Indianapolis. Lastly, huge thank you to everyone that came out to the Division 35 East PTP Carwash this past Saturday! It was such a hot day, but many of you came out, worked hard to wash all the cars out there! It was a very successful event where we raised $312 from all the generous donations we received that day. It’s crazy because that day was the first time I got sunburnt in my whole life, so I cannot imagine how badly you all must have gotten sunburnt! In the words of Sabrina Bodine, #sunburntforservice rings true!

// JULY 4TH PARADE

4TH OF JULY PARADE

When I think of 4th of July, waking up at six in the morning to set up a parade is not the first thing that comes to mind. Though it was quite tiresome and a definite change from my usual, noon awakening, summer routine, service stops for nothing! Along with the Goldstone Kiwins, the D35W Seals, and the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis, D35E helped set up an awesome parade and a really amazing venue. We set everything from small patriotic decorations to the main stage. There were bouncers and face painting stations, both facilitated by our fellow elephants. The smiles on kids having their face painted were really something to see. The Kiwanis also had its own hot dog booth that we ran and advertised for. Overall, it was an amazing experience because we were able to take the wheel of something we usually simply watch on the side lines. Though we spent many hours under the socal sun, service does not go unrewarded. Many new friends were made and amazing memories were created! KEVIN HUO, ROWLAND HIGH SCHOOL

Recently, Diamond Bar High School Key Club attended Hacienda Heights Fourth of July Parade along with our Kiwanis. Kiwanis have given us endless support, so this is one small way our club can give back to them. What better way to celebrate America’s independence than to help out with a parade? Even though many members dread setting up for events, set up gave members a chance to bond with other members within the division while we work together to set up the entire event within an hour! The event coordinators were very considerate and continually asked if we needed a break. We helped decorate the park with bows, ribbons, balloons, and even a huge balloon arch! Members also assisted the coordinators with setting up the stage and chairs. When the event started having more attendants, key clubbers got to work! There was a variety of tasks available for every key clubber. Key Clubbers assisted the Kiwanis hot dog booth by helping them prepare the hotdogs, helped supervise the jumpers and watched the little kids, helped

advertise hotdogs to the people, and helped with the face painting booth! Many little kids came up and asked for American flags, Batman, flowers, cupcakes, and many more! Key Clubbers made sure to put their creativity to good use. The Kiwanians offered key clubbers free hotdogs and ice cold water after the event as a thank you. Also, the event coordinators frequently came around offering volunteers ice cold water. Overall, despite the hot weather, key clubbers had a great time volunteering! As much as key clubbers dread set up, we dread clean up even more. However, everyone worked as a team and we managed to clean up the whole park within an hour and a half. Once everything was stored away for next year, everyone got in a circle and the Kiwanians and the Hacienda Heights event coordinators gave us a big thank and we ended the day with cookies, and of course, the Key Club Cheer! This is definitely a great way to celebrate America’s Freedom.

The Fourth of July event, located at Steinmetz park, was held for the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis. Our President Danielle Torres and Secretary Cynthia Vo had the opportunity to attend this event and assist in setting up and decorating the park. Danielle and Cynthia blew up dozens of red, white, and blue balloons and tied them onto all the canopies in the park. They also created huge balloon decorations-as seen in the second picture-for the parking lot. Our key club members were ecstatic to paint awesome designs on numerous adorable children (as well as on their fellow and equally adorable key clubbers) and hang up very patriotic decorations all over the park. They truly enjoyed helping set up this joyous event and I am very thankful that they took the time to attend on such short notice and on a holiday. Good job guys! All of us here at Northview Key Club cannot wait for all the upcoming events and are looking forward to seeing all of you again!

// RELAY FOR LIFE

WALNUT KEY CLUB 2014

Relay for Life Walnut Key Club ran a booth at the Walnut Relay for Life on Saturday, June 21st. To raise money for the American Cancer Society, the Japanese themed Walnut tent offered face painting and photo booth opportunities with either a Polaroid or Instagram cardboard cutout. D35E OTC 2014

Officer Training Conference

The Officer Training Conference (OTC), held on Saturday, June 28, 2014, was such a great, life changing experience for many. Key Club officers and members that attended learned how to be magnificent leaders for their schools’ clubs and communities. We were informed on how to perform the jobs and duties held as officers. Throughout the day, officers and members went to various informal workshops and sessions, where we learned about Key Club, our division, key points for being a great leader, and so much more valuable information that could be used throughout our lifetime! OTC was not just informative and fun, but served as such a great opportunity to meet new people from different schools in our division who have the same motivations, skills, and leadership values as one another. Lastly, Nogales’ Key Club would like to happily congratulate one of our members, Hanna Lam, as D35E’s member of the month! She has shown through her dedication that our communities and clubs can improve if each of us show unstoppable dedication and love for what we key clubbers do best—help and spread joy to others. // FINKBINER PARK

BONITA HIGH SCHOOL

Finkbiner Park & Otc For many weeks in the summer, there is a free concert hosted at Finkbiner Park in Glendora. Multiple music groups put on a show for the many people and their families sitting in the grass. This is a great way for many families of Glendora and nearby towns to spend their Sunday afternoon. People with similar interests in music may enjoy and talk about the presented music groups. Glendora Kiwannanies try to raise money here by selling sundaes to the audience. In the summer heat, sundaes are a great complement to the music being performed. Every week, different volunteers from Bonita High School go to Finkbiner Park to help the Kiwanians sell ice cream. They take the money, scoop, and give the ice cream to the customer. At the same time, they are able to enjoy the music and relax, just like everyone else. Bonita High School Key Club also hosted this year’s Officer Training Conference at their school. At this conference, there were different seminars that helped officers and prospective officers learn more about Key Club. The first set of seminars were on the different jobs that each officer did, which taught the newly appointed officers what they had to do, and showed prospective officers what they will have to do if appointed. The second set of seminars taught the members different aspects of Key Club, like the importance of public speaking and the many partner charities of Key Club. Last but not least, an inspirational speaker talked about how everyone had a purpose and how we must all set a goal and pursue it. PHILLIP CHUNG, BONITA HIGH SCHOOL

// PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM

PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM Pediatric Trauma Program, or PTP, is the leading cause of death for children among the age of 14 and under in the United States. The CNH district aims to develop local projects to reduce the number of children who are killed or injured by trauma. Pediatric Trauma Program is based off the principle that all injuries are preventable. For example, if a child had a helmet, he or she would be less susceptible to head injury, or the risk of a child tumbling down the stairs would be reduced if households were provided safety gates. With the raised funds, the CNH district will donate such safety items to prevent injury and trauma. With the help from our members and the community, our division was able to raise $1,074 - - $312 coming from our recent PTP car wash. Great job Elephants! Keep up the good work and continue to help our district to ensure that all children live happy, healthy and safe lives.
