STOP STIGMATISATION ALL citizens must hold together and desist from stigmatising Covid-19 patients and asymptomatic individuals as the trend is retrogressive in the fight against the pandemic. Zambians must give moral, spiritual and other forms of support to individuals who have recovered from the disease instead of running away from them because such an act amounts to stigmatisation. Reports abound about unsympathetic individuals pouring scorn and mocking people who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in many areas. Nakonde District Commissioner, Field Simwinga, experienced stigmatisation as some people kept away from him and his family when he left an isolation centre after recovering. Some parents advised their children to keep away from his family members who had just gone through treatment and care. Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dora Siliya, received a flurry of attacks when she came out in the open to announce that she had tested positive of corona virus. Individuals, including women took to social media accusing the minister of lying about her status while others rejoiced about the unfortunate situation. One would have thought that the women would rise up and defend their female colleague, but nay, they were part of social media hooliganism. There was dead silence from women’s organisations that pretend to advocate for the rights of women in the country. Mocking reached a crescendo a few days later when Health Minister, Chitalu Chilufya, also tested positive. A number of people, including political foes took it out on him and celebrated his positive status and subsequent self-isolation. There were a myriad of negative opinions about the Health Minister, who should have naturally received sympathy and accolades for having been in the forefront disseminating information about preventive measures. Certainly, there are more incidences of mocking of ordinary citizens going unreported in townships, work places and other locations. The Ministry of Labour and Social Services and other Government wings ought to be proactive and check stigmatisation and other excesses in work places on workers who have once suffered from coronavirus. Additionally, the civil society should equally get heavily involved in fighting discrimination against Covid-19 victims. Evidently, information dissemination is concentrated on preventive measures and statistics of infections and recoveries, leaving an information gap on the imperative need to fight discrimination. Just as some sections of society has observed, it is “unZambian” to mock a sick person or anyone who experienced a sickness. From a Christian stand-point, Zambians ought to bear for one another and encourage the weak as opposed to mocking them. The prophet Jeremiah declared that God brings healing and states in Chapter 33:6 that, “Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.” Likewise, citizens must not turn the tide but go along with the Biblical teachings and encourage the weak, sick and the weary. All Christians have a moral and spiritual obligation to encourage the sick and in this case, it is important to pray for Jehovah Rapha’s hand of healing upon all Covid-19 afflicted persons. Mocking the sick does not come from God, but has its roots elsewhere; it must be avoided at all costs.

PURSUING JUSTICE AND EQUITY WITH INTERGRITY

THE Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has assured investors that their investment is safe and protected by the law. ZDA board chairperson, Fisho Mwale, regretted that some lives had been lost and that there were reports of Zambian workers being subjected to harsh conditions of service. A few days ago, three Chinese nationals were killed and their bodies burnt in a factory in Makeni area in Lusaka after a dispute with workers over payment while on the Copperbelt and other areas some workers were reported to have been forced into quarantine. But Mr Mwale yesterday said ZDA was fully aware of the important role investors played in the country’s economic growth and job creation. He however indicated that investors should adhere to the laws that govern how businesses should be run. Mr Mwale said it was a fact that

Mr Mwale, Zambia needed foreign direct investment (FDI) as it directly contributed to expanding investment and tax base in the country. FDI, he said, was key in addressing the problem of unemployment through the creation of new job opportunities and the

introduction of advanced technology. Mr Mwale assured investors and businesses that their investments were safe and protected by the laws of the land. “It is pertinent to recognise that the peace, rule of law and the political will that the country enjoys is one of the major attributes that makes Zambia the best investment destination of choice in the sub region and therefore it is important that we recognise the need to preserve it at all cost. “Zambia is enjoying very cordial and warm relations with most countries and as such has attracted major investments from those countries in keys sectors of the economy,” Mr Mwale said. He said Zambia needed to manage its due process in the dispensation of the law, without jeopardising good standing with the investor community. Mr Mwale said this must be done while investors adhered to the laws obtaining in this country for the mutual benefit of all parties involved.

We’ll finish projects - Lungu Bumper maize crop cheers ZNFU PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says he wants to see all developmental projects currently underway countrywide completed. He said Government’s desire was to see people start deriving maximum benefit from the projects hence the need to expedite their completion. President Lungu was speaking in Ikelenge yesterday during a meeting with traditional leaders. He is in North-Western Province on a three-day working visit Mr Lungu expressed concern that some projects the government was carrying out in the district had stalled, saying that this had led to the state terminating some contracts. “Some contracts in this district have been terminated and for Mwinilunga-Jimbe road, the project is under review so that the contract can be given to others because the public private partnership with Frecha Mining, the contractor has failed to

By CHINTU MALAMBO ELEVEN UNIP members have asked the Lusaka High Court to join four other intended defendants in a matter where they have sued party president Tilyenji Kaunda and others for illegal stay in office and alleged mismanagement of its property. The plaintiffs want Iqbal Akubat, Otis Njovu, Joshua Lubemba and Andrew Nyambe to be joined as intended defendants to the action and show cause why they should not be cited for contempt of court for going against the court order when they auctioned party assets while the matter was still active in court.

work,” President Lungu said. And Chieftainess Ikelenge said for the district to have meaningful develop, there is need for a good road network. “My district borders two neighbouring countries Angola and Congo DR and once the road is worked on it can bring government much needed revenue,” she said. Chief Nyakaseya thanked President Lungu for many developmental projects being implemented in the area and appealed for their speedy completion. Meanwhile, Chief Mwinyilamba appealed to President Lungu to connect electricity to his chiefdom. “Lack of electricity in my chiefdom has negatively affected the operation of schools and the rural health centre. Pupils are not even learning information communication technology due to this challenge,” Chief Mwinyilamba noted. – ZANIS.

THE Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) has hailed farmers for rising above challenges faced during the last farming season to record a bumper harvest. ZNFU president Jervis Zimba yesterday said farmers faced numerous challenges such as late delivery of input distribution and uneven rain patterns across the country but that they were happy that farmers had delivered. He said ZNFU recognised the challenges the farmers went through last season but that this notwithstanding, they rose against adversity. “The Zambia National Farmers’ Union would like to thank most sincerely all farmers, the small-scale, emergent and large-scale for producing 3, 387, 469 metric tonnes of maize to make Zambia food secure. “We do recognise the challenges the farmers went through last season i.e. the high cost of inputs and the uneven distribution of rain. This notwithstanding, you rose against adversity. Once again well done to the farmers of Zambia,” he said. And Mr Zimba appealed to farm produce off-takers such as the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to offer farmers economically-sound prices for their commodities. He said the 2020/2021 season was just a few months away and that giving farmers a good price for their produce would help them reinvest and adequately prepare for the coming season. “We urge our farmers to now focus on the marketing aspects. We would like to urge all the off-takers especially the Food Reserve Agency to pay an economic price to the farmers and to pay the farmers on time. “We are five months away from the 2020/2021 farming season and we do recognise that the input costs have increased due to various factors. It is only by paying farmers an economic price for the maize that we can expect them to reinvest for the coming season,” Mr Zimba said.

UNIP leadership wrangles continue This is in a matter in which Mr Fackson Njovu and 10 others sued Mr Kaunda, UNIP vice president Njekwa Anamela, Mr Banda and Administrative secretary Welfare Mfune seeking an injunction to restrain them from performing functions of Members of Central Committee (MCCs) as their mandate expired in 2005. The 11 are seeking an order that outgoing MCCs and the recognised interim Members of Central Committee (MCCs) follow the Registrar of Societies’ administrative directive to jointly organise and hold a congress by forming one working group.

They also want the court to compel Mr Kaunda and the others to produce a full UNIP inventory of assets and funds within and outside the country, an order for an account of all the party assets sold from 2000 to date, costs and any other relief the court may deem fit. According to an affidavit in support of Ex-parte summons to join parties to action filed recently, Mr Mannwell Ng’ambi, who is one of the plaintiffs stated that on August 6, 2029 the complainants commenced an action among other things claiming an account of UNIP assets and cessation of illegal sale of

assets belonging to the party by the defendants. Mr Ng’ambi said on August 22, 2019, the Lusaka High Court granted an Ex-parte order of injunction restraining the defendants from performing duties of members of the central committee (MCCs) save those duties to organise the Congress. He claimed that the defendants have disregarded the said order of injunction and have during the substance of the injunction on December 6, 2019 illegally sold property number 632 Kabwe also known as Victoria House to Iqbal Akubat (fifth intended defendant).

LOCAL FIRMS HAVE NO CAPACITY TO RESTRUCTURE DEBT - EAZ By SILUMESI MALUMO and BUUMBA CHIMBULU

ZAMBIAN firms have no capacity to undertake debt restructure because it is a complex process which needs highly competent firms, says the Economic Association of Zambia (EAZ). And an economist Statistician has said Zambia needs a skilled financial adviser such as Lazard Freres Gestion with experience in dealing with other financial institutions who may be the holders of the country’s Eurobonds to restructure its US$11.2 billion external debt. For bondholders to agree to new terms of debt, a country

needs a financial adviser with clout and experience in dealing with other financial institutions who may be the holders of Zambia’s Eurobonds, says Shebo Nalishebo, an Economic Statistician. Zambia has hired Lazard Lazard Freres Gestion of France for US$5 million to restructure its US$11bn foreign debt over a three-year period, a 0.05 percent of the entire foreign debt portfolio. Meanwhile, EAZ National Secretary, Mutusunge Zulu, said there was no local firm competent enough to handle the debt restructuring. Mr Zulu said the foreign firm, Lazard, was the best option to carry out the assign-

ment because it was competent enough and had a lot of experience. He said in an interview yesterday that Lazard had done debt restructuring for developed economies such as Argentina and Greece as well as African countries like Mozambique. Meanwhile, Patriotic Front Media Director Sunday Chanda said opposition parties were ignorant on many issues, including the government's decision to restructure the national debt. And Mr Nalishebo explained that Zambia had no local firm which had the needed experience to assist in restructuring the country’s debt.

“I could be wrong, but I do not know of any Zambian financial advisory firm or political party with a track record as Lazard’s to be able to pull off this kind of debt restructuring,” he said in his comment on the debate regarding the hiring of Lazard.

US$11bn Zambia has hired Lazard Lazard Freres Gestion of France for US$5 million to restructure its US$11bn foreign debt over a three-year period, a 0.05 percent of the entire foreign debt portfolio.

PF slams racial abuse against Zambians By AARON CHIYANZO

… calls for protection of local jobs

NY racial abuse of any Zambian by any foreigner on Zambian soil is an affront on the entire nation and it is inexcusable anywhere in the world, says the Patriotic Front. And the Patriotic Front (PF) has said all businesses for Zambians must clearly be stated in subsidiary legislation because foreign investors cannot be allowed to compete with Zambians in entrepreneurship such as barber shops and chicken rearing. The ruling party also demanded that empowerment vehicles like Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) repositions itself as a true empowerment organ for emerging and exist-

ing local entrepreneurs, especially the youth, women and differently-abled persons. PF secretary general, Davies Mwila said while the ruling party called on citizens not to be violent against any foreign investors, it was equally calling upon all foreign nationals to treat Zambians with dignity while striving to co-exist in unity. Mr Mwila said in a statement that co-existence must never be characterised by derogatory and racial double standards on either side. “Ichalo bantu. The Zambian nation is its people. Any racial abuse of any Zambian by any foreigner on Zambian soil is an affront on our entire nationhood. It is inexcusable anywhere in the world,”

Dirty cops rock Lusaka … Traffic officers extorting money from motorists with impunity. By AARON CHIYANZO

CORRUPT traffic officers in Lusaka are again mounting illegal roadblocks and extorting money from motorists with impunity. Motorists have complained that the officers were harassing them to obtain money from them corruptly. A check by the Daily Nation found more than 12 traffic officers manning one roadblock on Lumumba Road near the Mungwi Road junction traffic light. One officer went ahead to ask for a bribe from this reporter without knowing that the conversation was being recorded. The police command in Lusaka was immediately alerted of the incident and

have since requested for details to follow up the matter. Some motorists interviewed complained that traffic police officers hiding at “strategic points” on some roads in the capital city were only impounding vehicles from those who did not have any money after demanding a bribe. One motorist from Matero narrated how police last Thursday waylaid motorists at the Mungwi/Lumunba Road traffic lights and impounded his vehicle and several others while ignoring the chaos caused by minibus drivers, over defective traffic lights. The motorist said: “I tried to explain to this elderly female cop that the minibus drivers were causing obstruction by blocking the road

he said. Mr Mwila also challenged the Ministry of Local Government to take action in legally correcting any prevailing situation with deserved urgency. “So since His Worship the Mayor Miles Sampa has apologised, we expect to see more action from Ministry of Local Government and sister ministries in legally correcting any prevailing situation with deserved urgency,” he said Mr Mwila urged Zambian employees not to turn murderous when foreign employers begin to engage in racial or other discriminatory practices but follow laid down procedures in seeking redress. “When our people are laid siege in very trying environments by their foreign em-

but the woman was uncompromising and instead went ahead to impound my vehicle and grabbed my licence.” He said he was shocked that the officer later asked for K350 saying it was either he parked the vehicle at the police station or he paid the money for him to go. The motorist said when he told the police officer he had no money she replied: “mulinazingati (how much do you have?”) “When I told her I only had a K50, she quickly snatched it from my hand and gave me back my licence.” He said even the other motorists whose vehicles had been impounded at the same time as his hinted that they were asked to pay amounts ranging from K50 to K350 before being given back their licences. A female motorist complained that she was forced to pay K100 before her licence could be given back to her.

ployers and their contact with the outside world restricted for weeks on end without even having an opportunity to see their families, our hearts feel their pain. “However, our passion should not turn murderous. For in defending the pride of our Africanness, we lose our basic human identity when we take the life of another human being- no matter the race. So our hearts equally bleed when the lives of investors are taken in senseless cold blood by our people,” he said. Mr Mwila also called on all investors to respect the country's labour laws as well as cultural and traditional norms. He said when foreigners were in Zambia, the Zambian way overrides the foreign way, saying that was the bedrock of co-existence as a people.

APOLOGISE TO CHITIMUKULU, HH TOLD By TROY MUKUPA

THE Patriotic Front (PF) in the Northern Province has insisted that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema must apologise for sending surrogates like James Lukuku to insult the Chitimukulu. Kasama Central Member of Parliament Kelvin Sampa said in an interview that the Bemba-speaking people were still waiting for an apology from Mr Hichilema for the insults and demeaning words directed at the Chitimukulu after he advised his people to vote en masse like Tongas in Southern Province Mr Sampa said they want the UPND leadership to come out and condemn the attacks that were directed at the Mwine Lubemba. Mr Sampa said in an interview it was shocking that the UPND leadership was mute on the attacks that were directed at the Chitimukulu. He said the silence from the UPND can only mean that the attacks on the Chitimukulu had the blessings of the top leadership in the party. “Today the whole UPND has gone mute as if nothing had happened. We challenge the UPND leadership to come out and condemn the attacks that were directed at the Mwine Lubemba. “We also demand for an apology for dragging the name of the Chitimukulu

Maize price fair - FRA By CHARLES MUSONDA

THE Food Reserve Agency (FRA) says it does not expect anyone to cry foul over the maize price pegged at K110 per 50 kilogramme bag for the 2020 crop marketing season. And the FRA says it is ready to buy one million metric tonnes of maize as directed by President Edgar Lungu. In an interview yesterday after announcing prices for designated agricultural commodities, FRA Executive Director Chola Kafwabulula said they consulted relevant players in the agriculture industry before arriving at the prices. Mr. Kafwabulula said FRA invited the Ministry of Agriculture, Zambia Cooperative Federation, Small-Scale Farmers Association, and the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) for consultations but only ZNFU did not attend the meeting.

According to the 2020 crop marketing season prices, the FRA will buy white maize at K110 per 50kg bag, soya beans at K150 per 50kg bag, and paddy rice at K70 per 40kg bag. Mr. Kafwabulula encouraged small-scale farmers to sell their produce to the FRA because it is a government institution tasked with providing national food security. He said this will guarantee food security for home-grown school feeding programmes, vulnerable groups like hospices, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), and floods and drought victims. “When you leave maize to the private sector you will not have control over it. Selling maize to the FRA means empowering Zambians with food security. We are a transparent government agency because we ensure that

into politics. The Paramount Chief is non-political, non-partisan and what he said was directed to his subjects and was very clear,” Mr Sampa said. Mr Sampa wondered what kind of example Mr Hichilema was portraying to his followers when he can't come out and condemned attacks on elders. He said the Chitimukulu being a Zambian had the right to encourage people from the northern part of Zambia to be concerned with the way that they participate in issues of Governance.

Mr Hichilema

“Hakainde Hichilema is vying for the highest seat of the land and yet cannot come out to condemn the attacks on an elder, the Chitimukulu. We challenge him and the UPND leadership to come out and condemn the attacks that were peddled on the Mwine Lubemba. We are demanding for an apology for their attacks. Their silence can only mean one thing and that is the attacks had the blessings of top leadership in UPND," Mr Sampa said.

before we start buying, the Zambia Weights and Measures Agency comes to assize our scales. “Some buyers have scales that are not assized. They pay farmers on time but the farmers make losses because they do not sell the actual weights. The other reason that farmers should sell maize to FRA is that they will help to create jobs like depot clerks and security guards for their own children,” he said. Mr. Kafwabulula said the FRA will start buying maize as soon as the grain moisture content reaches the prescribed standard of 12.5 percent to ensure long term storage and avoid grain wastage. Meanwhile, Mr. Kafwabulula said the FRA is ready to buy the one million metric tonnes of maize, as directed by President Lungu, to replenish strategic grain reserves from a dynamic grain market obtaining locally and in the region.

MINERS IN QUARANTINE PERKS …K1, 000 to be locked up By ROGERS KALERO

MANAGEMENT at Chambishi Copper Smelter (CCS) has increases allowances and improved social amenities as the firm prepares for re-quarantine. CCS said re-entry to the facilities will be taken seriously and employees have been given three days in which to decide whether to be quarantined or not. According to a memorandum from management to employees and obtained by the Daily Nation in Kitwe yesterday, quarantine allowances had been increased by K1, 000 per month across the board. Previously, workers in the lowest grade got K1, 000 quarantine allowance per month while those in the highest

grade were entitled to K5, 000. Management provided food for quarantined employees before they were released on Wednesday after the initial quarantine period. The memorandum dated May 27, 2020 was signed by assistant chief executive officer, Zhang Xiangwang and indicated that employees were given a fresh start. And Mineworkers Union Zambia (MUZ) General Secretary George Mumba said employers at CCS and NFC Mining Plc had given chance to employees to apply on their own. Mr Mumba said, at CCS, the employees had been given three days in which to make a decision whether to be quarantined or not so that people do not think that they were

forced. On Tuesday, the 30-day quarantine period elapsed as signed but management extended the quarantine duration to three months. However, the workers packed their belongings and initiated a protest. But in an interview yesterday, Mr Mumba said the matter had been resolved after the workers were released and asked to sign a fresh quarantine agreement. "At CCS, the workers have been given three days in which to apply for quarantine or not. This is to give them enough time to make a decision,'' Mr Mumba said And some workers interviewed at CCS, said they were not being ill-treated. "For us, here at CCS, we

don't have problems with management and being quarantined, but we are only missing home,'' said one miner.

More UPND MPs back Bill 10 - Tutwa By SILUMESI MALUMO

SOME Members of Parliament including the opposition who have been against Bill 10 are now in support after being guided by their traditional leaders to read and understand the contents, says Government Deputy Chief Tutwa Ngulube. Mr Ngulube said most of the MPS who were against the legislation were instructed by traditional leaders to read and understand the clauses which had made them to appreciate its importance. He said in an interview yesterday that some UPND MPs had now come to understand that they were initially misled about the legislation. Mr Ngulube, who is also Kabwe Central MP, said with the positive response from some oppo-

sition MPs it was now evident that the legislation would be successful. “This legislation is intended to improve the governance of the nation and it does not serve the interest of the Patriotic Front,” he said. Mr Ngulube said it was gratifying that traditional leaders had convinced some opposition lawmakers to support the legislation. “In many areas where sensitisation has been done, traditional leaders were surprised that they were misled by people with selfish interests which has led them to call on MPs to support the progressive legislation. "As we are going back to Parliament to debate on this legislation you shall see that many will support it because they have appreciated what is contained in it.

MANGANESE MINERS TO FORM COOPERATIVES By SILUMESI MALUMO

M

ANGANESE miners in Chifunabuli whose mining licences have been dormant have been advised to form cooperatives so that mining can resume. The move is aimed at curbing illegal mining. Government extended an olive branch to the SmallScale Miners Association of Zambia. Association president Kunda Chani, said Mines Richard Musukwa instructed that cooperatives must be formed immediately and start operating so that illegal activities could be eradicated. Low compliance levels worry MP By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

WUSAKILE Member of Parliament Pavyuma Kalobo has expressed disappointed with the low compliance of wearing masks in his constituency. Mr Kalobo was speaking in Kitwe when he received a donation of assorted items worth over K12, 000 in the fight against the corona virus to Luangwa Health Centre. He said that it was important for people to realise the need to continue with the wearing of face masks in order to stop the further spread of the corona virus. “The pandemic that has really affected a larger population of the world and Zambia has not been spared, hence the need to pay attention and adhere to all the health guidelines that have been put in place,” he said. Mr Kalobo has since commended Ex-Helen Kaunda Secondary School pupils for donating to the health facility. He said that the donation would help not only the health workers but the whole Luangwa community fight the deadly virus. Mr Kalobo the fight against the pandemic needed concerted efforts, starting from health personnel to the last person in the community. And speaking earlier, Kitwe District Clinical Care Expert Marrie-Josee Odimba said that the donation would help frontline health workers to stay safe from the disease. The donated Items included hand sanitizers, Blood Pressure machines, infra-red thermometers, surgical gloves, face masks, disinfectants and disposable bags.

Chilangwa and Mines Permanent Secretary Banarby Mulenga had threatened to revoke idle mining licences.

The minister said illegal activities in the area had been perpetrated by inactive manganese mining licences. But Mr Chani in an interview yesterday said it had been resolved that licence holders must form cooperatives in order to start mining operations. “If the mineral is properly mined it will benefit the host community as well as the nation at large. The other issue which we raised was about the licence holders being blocked to access the mining areas by those who want to promote illegal mining. “So we have decided to stop this illegal activities being promoted by some people so that the country can fully benefit from the resource," Mr Chani said.

‘Youths must embrace innovation’ By BENNIE MUNDANDO YOUNG people must be innovative and productive to create a livelihood for themselves amid the corona virus pandemic, New Congress Party (NCP) president Peter Chanda has said. Speaking at Millennium’s Radio programme dubbed talk at six, Mr Chanda said he was aware that the Covid-19 was a battle of the generation and as such, the youths must become innovative. He said Dr Kaunda’s generation united against

political and tribal background to fight a common cause and that brought about independence. “If we can unite, we can fight and win this Corona Virus Disease which has ravaged the whole world. We have all the raw materials that we need to sustain our economy. “It is high time that youths desist from politicking on the Covid-19 but must poses patriotism, productivity and hard work to bring about economic development,” Mr Chanda said. Mr Chanda said Zambia was a land-linked country and this must act as a competitive advantage for agriculture, innovation, manufacturing and importing products. Zambia, he said, must not be content with being a consuming nation but must be a producing one. He pointed to the fact that the northern part of Zambia has a good rainfall climate pattern and the country has the largest water bodies in Southern Africa, agriculture must be embraced as a tool for employment, food security, and development.

CEC PROFIT DROPS BY 78 P.C. By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

O

PE R AT I O N A L challenges affecting Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) have negatively affected financial results for Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) whose profit after tax has reduced by 78 percent. CEC total revenue decreased by three percent to US$408.272 million in 2019 from US$421.203 million in 2018 mainly on account of an eight percent reduction in power demand by the mines and reduced wheeling services to non-mining consumers of 7 percent. Profit after tax was US$12.246 million compared to US$55.856 million in 2018, representing a decrease of 78 percent, says CEC Company Secretary, Julia Chaila. Ms Chaila explained that KCM was the subject of winding up proceedings

commenced by ZCCM-IH while the planned smelter outage at MCM, for purposes of effecting plant overhaul, had the impact of reducing demand at the mine by about 35 percent. She said the challenges at KCM had manifested in the customer failing to pay for power consumed, resulting in the company taking significant impairments during the year. “This remains a top concern for the business, requiring the Company to take measures to limit its exposure if the customer does not find a sustainable solution in the coming year,” Ms Chaila said in a statement announcing the 2019 audited financial results. Ms Chaila also said CEC expected the power demand to remain largely suppressed in the next one to two years. She explained that the key downside risks to demand in the short term included the mining fiscal regime, seen as being unfavourable by the mines, and the impact

of Covid-19, which were yet to be fully understood at this stage. She however said the prospects for a rebound in demand going forward remained positive as most mine customers worked to return their operations to full capacity and new projects resumed ramping up demand over the next three to five years. “Recent efforts by the Government to stabilize the mining sector and efforts across the globe to find a lasting solution to Covid-19 give us a measured sense of confidence that stability

and focus on growth should return over the medium to long term,” Ms Chaila said. Ms Chaila also said CEC and Zesco, with the support of the Government, had continued negotiations to put in place a successor agreement to the Bulk Supply Agreement (BSA). ‘MSMEs critical to Africa’s growth’ By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

THE African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) and Ecobank Group have kick-started their collaboration to strengthen Africa’s response to Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). MSMEs are critical to the African economy as they account for almost 85 percent of all private sector employment. AUDA-NEPAD Chief Executive Officer, Ibrahim Assane Mayaki, emphasised that success of the initiative would depend on the number of partners and the quality of the partnerships. Dr Mayaki said MSMEs were critical to the African economy as they accounted for almost 85 percent of all private sector employment. This was during a virtual workshop facilitated by McKinsey held on May 26, this year provided an opportunity to reinforce the commitment of national, regional and continental institutions to work together to support MSMEs following the covid-19 pandemic.

Ecobank Group Chief Executive Officer, Ade Ayeyemi, said the initiative was focused on empowering MSMEs and to ease restarting and growing Africa’s economies with the knowledge that a significant number of jobs will be lost and businesses incapacitated. “The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders from East, West, Central, North and Southern Africa to identify priority areas and strengthen our collective approach to safeguarding this sector, especially the micro enterprises. “We believe that a multilateral approach which includes organisations, private sectors and governments will be beneficial and imperative for a successful implementation of support for Africa’s MSMEs,” he said. High level representatives from the African Union Commission, regional development banks and development financial institutions from the continent came together to focus their efforts on supporting the MSMEs segment and protect the livelihoods of millions of Africans.

THE Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) has hailed Zambia and the Namibian for allowing free flow of government essential goods between the two countries amid coronavirus pandemic. WBCG business development manager, James Kaposa, said he was optimistic that continued adherence to health guidelines would enable economic activities bounce back sooner than later to bring relief to the households and industry. cooperation with health authorities from both countries. He said individual trucking companies had come up with a rely system of swapping drivers at the border after their truck cabins had been sanitized. This, he said, was aimed

at minimising or stopping persons crossing borders. He said that owning to the grave threats posed by the Covid-19 to social and economic activities, the corridor would remain open only to the extent that the transmission of the virus was contained through practicing good hygiene and adoption of new measures aimed at reducing any further infections. According to Mr Kaposa, Namibia had opened an isolation truck port in Walvis Bay as a result of a joint venture involving the Namibian Ports Authority, relevant government agencies and the private sectors players. “Instead of foreign drivers being forced into a two-week quarantine on entering Namibia, they will be housed in the facility, which has ablution

facilities and a store where they can buy food and other supplies with health staff housed in a mobile clinic to screen the drivers and provide medical support where necessary,” he said. And WBCG, Chief Executive Officer, Hippy Tjivikua, explained that the truck port had been set up on 60, 000 square metres of land owned a private stakeholder, who would manage the facility with the assistance of the corridor group wellness department. Mr Tjivikua said the drivers accommodated for a period of seven days at the facility for the duration of their trip in Namibia are expected to only enter the town of Walvis Bay when delivering their consignment and return to their temporary accommodation at the truck port.

regarding any party programmes and did not also delegate any duties. “So in this situation, where there is no coordination between the chairman and myself, where the chairman does not delegate anything which was needed to be done in his absence, there is nothing I can do,’’ Mr Chilupula said But Mr Chilufya vented his anger on cadres accusing him of being an absentee chairman, saying they were, in fact, absentee cadres who did not understand his programmes. He said he was at the farm harvesting maize and

According to the Local Government Act cap 281 sec 61 function 41 of laws of Zambia, unclaimed bodies qualify to be disposed of by the council’s public health department. “We have been issuing notices of identification to the public but no one has so far come to identify any of them. And looking at the period they have been in the mortuary they qualify to be disposed of,” she said. Ms Chileya said that among the 13 bodies, of which most of them were in a decomposed state, was one female.

She said that the disposing of the unclaimed bodies would help decongest the mortuary and help personnel maintain hygiene. “We therefore advise the public to always rush to the hospital whenever they miss their relatives to try and identify them so that they can be given proper burials,” Ms Chileya said.

ZAMTEL should up their game on the toll free line 111

FINALLY FARMERS ARE GETTING FAIR DEAL Dear Editor,

O

VER the last four months (July to October 2019), the price of Zambia's staple food (maize and mealie meal) has been on an upward trend. This is largely due to an open system allowing farmers to sell maize at market value. A healthy situation. Government on the other hand has continued to procure agricultural produce from farmers as per tradition (at slightly lower prices) to beef up food security through the Food Reserve Agency. This market value or cost reflective tag has led to an increase in mealie meal prices for the consumer. It's a bitter sweet tale of sorts in that the farmer is getting value with every drop of sweat and the consumer (mostly in urban areas has to forego certain

luxuries to meet the cost of nshima.) The PF government's open market policy has created a conducive environment for sector growth. For decades Zambia has enjoyed government subsidies on food and essential services such as electricity. With time, these subsidies have been reduced and in some cases withdrawn to ease the burden on the national treasury. The adjustment process is never seamless but is a necessary measure. We need to ask ourselves; "Who feeds Zambia?" "At what cost do they do it?" "Do they make a profit out of it?" The answer to each of these three questions will in turn determine whether or not the current price of mealie meal is justified. Zambia is largely fed by subsistence farmers most of whom are in rural or outskirt areas of

the country. President Edgar Lungu and PF government has tossed the coin and it is still spinning. The farmer's side of the coin is finally facing upwards. The farmer has for the first time sold his maize at the market price. This has put more money in his pocket. This has stirred a production movement and an increase in the number of persons putting hoe to ground. The right formula has been found and a balance struck. An increase in agricultural output will mean; *A reduction in prices of agro produce and increased exports. This in turn becomes a self-regulating or market driven sector of the economy. *An increase in industries manufacturing farming equipment, fertiliser and other inputs, *An increase in demand

for packaging materials such as sacks The ultimate result is new jobs, new income streams and a broadened tax base all with an aim of enhancing the nation’s quality of livelihood. The increase in mealie meal prices is therefore a blessing in disguise whose benefits will be appreciated beginning next harvest season. Every wise citizen with foresight should seize this moment and join the bandwagon of new farmers. The rewards will be worth it. KAY MUSONDA, PF Media.

OPPOSITION POLITICAL PARTIES FAILING ZAMBIANS

UPND crowds started way back in 2006 Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

CROWDS are not a determinant of winning elections. Most of those who attended the HH/UPND rally in Kitwe didn't come from the district. That was a UPND national rally. Epobapela apopene. Ba UPND Zambia yonse. Most of his members were ferried from Southern Province and a few from Western and other provinces. UPND and HH are trying to hoodwink Zambians that they have become popular on the CB. Using crowds are their old tactic. At last they always lose. They will cry even in 2021. HH cannot change anything in Zambia. After all they don't have a manifesto. They can't do what the PF government has done in seven years since 2011. They are very far from ECL’s powerful development agenda which has delivered. SONTAPO not ukulandafye and promising people impossible or manna from Heaven. We shall only wait for 2021 polling day. Your ratings on HH, CK are FAKE. HH can't beat ELC. PAUL CHILESHE.

I WRITE with a sad heart how most opposition political parties have slowly become irrelevant to the political discourse of this nation. The opposition parties’ role is to offer checks and balances to the governing party with hope and assurance of being the government in waiting. However, their continued unwarranted attacks on the ruling Patriotic Front without giving alternatives leaves much to be desired and is therefore a shame. It is like they are many a time just embroiled in fighting for

Dear Editor, ZAMBIA Telecommunication Corporation (ZAMTEL) is a Government-owned mobile service provider. It provides various services such as voice calls, selling of cell phones and internet among others. As clients utilise these services, they may face some challenges and opt to seek clarification from the company. The customers make use of the free toll line 111 to communicate with the appropriate members of staff. However, it becomes very difficult for the clients to communicate with officers from the call centre department. This is because their free toll line goes unanswered no matter how many times you call it. ZAMTEL should emulate Airtel and MTN whose toll free lines are very effective and reliable. You get the feedback when you call their toll free lines thereby getting assisted within the twinkling of an eye or within the shortest possible time. It is for this reason that I request ZAMTEL to improve their communication through the toll free line. If they can’t improve, it is better to do away with their toll free line because it is not serving the intended purpose. We are sick and tired of getting a raw deal from ZAMTEL in terms of service delivery insofar as their toll free line is concerned. ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

Seek better ways of resolving marital conflicts Dear Editor, MARITAL conflicts have taken a toll in the recent past. The unresolved marital conflicts have greatly contributed to high incidences of divorce cases and spousal killings. It is a known fact that every marriage has its own unique problems but how one responds to this in resolving the problem is important. Every marital problem between couples has a lasting solution. It is therefore imperative to seek better ways of resolving the marital conflicts rather than resorting to

killing each other. You can involve the church leaders and relatives among others to help you. Communication plays a very significant role in averting the marital conflicts that arise in marriages and intimate relationships. It is heartbreaking to see couples killing each other using lethal weapons such as guns, knives and iron bars among others. If you can’t resolve the marital conflicts, it is a worthwhile decision to seek divorce through the courts of law. ‘MARRIAGE COUNSELLOR,’ Lusaka.

SENIOR CHEMISTRY: PRODUCTION OF AMMONIA In the previous lesson, we talked about non-metals which include oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. When stating the uses of nitrogen and hydrogen, one use was common between the two and that is they are both used in the manufacturing of ammonia. In the lesson for today, we shall look at production of ammonia. Hence the topic for today is manufacturing of ammonia Ammonia can be prepared at both laboratory and industrial level. We shall begin discussing manufacturing of ammonia at industrial level. The identity test for ammonia is that it turns damp red litmus paper blue. This means that when a damp (moist or wet) red paper is introduced into a gas jar containing ammonia, it will turn blue. This entails that ammonia is alkaline in nature. Physical properties of ammonia (a) It is colourless (b) It is lighter than air (c) It has a pungent smell (d) It has a boiling point of -33.30C (e) It has a freezing point of -77.70C (f) It is very soluble in water Chemical properties of ammonia (a) It turns a damp red litmus paper blue. This is the identity test for ammonia (b) It dissolves in water to form ammonium hydroxide (c) It burns in pure oxygen with a yellow- brown flame (d) It reacts with hydrogen chloride to form a white smoke as shown below NH3(g) + HCl(g) NH4Cl(s) Therefore, the white smoke is ammonium chloride (e) It is a reducing agent of metal oxides that are low in the reactivity series. 3CuO(s) + 2NH3(g) 3Cu(s) + 3H2O + N2(g) Manufacturing of ammonia at industrial level At industrial level, ammonia is manufactured by the Haber process. The Haber process was named after a German Chemist by the name of Fritz Haber. At the Haber process, ammonia is manufactured by reacting nitrogen and hydrogen. These two gases used in this process are obtained from the industrial processes we discussed in our previous lesson. The diagram below shows Haber process. Note that this is just a sketch diagram and it comes in different types but the principle remains the same.

On the other hand, when pressure is high, the forward reaction will be favoured. For gaseous reactant increasing pressure will in turn increase the amount of the product because the rate of collision of gas particles will be high. Therefore, increasing pressure in the Haber process will increase the yield of ammonia and the equilibrium position will shit to the right. The catalyst speeds up the rate for forward and backward reaction at the same rate. The use of a catalyst in the Haber ensures that lower temperature is used so that there is high yield of ammonia. Laboratory preparation of ammonia. In the laboratory, ammonia is prepared by heating ammonium chloride(NH4Cl) calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2) commonly known as slaked lime. See the diagram below.

(a) Catalyst (iron) (b) Pressure of 200 atm (c) Temperature of 3500C to 4500C When the above conditions are met, the two gases react to produce ammonia. The ammonia produced is pumped into the condenser where it is condensed to liquid ammonia. The liquid ammonia is removed kept in the storage tank. The unreacted gases are pumped back to the reactor as indicated in the above diagram so that they can react to produce more ammonia. When temperature is high, the backward reaction will be favoured, this means that ammonia will decompose to produce hydrogen and nitrogen and the equilibrium will shift to the left. Hence to maximise the yield of ammonia, slightly low temperature is required

Example 2 Ammonia is produced by a reversible reaction. The equation for the reaction is: N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3 (a) In the reversible reaction for the production of ammonia which reaction is exothermic and endothermic? (b) Explain what would happen to the pH of water when ammonia is dissolved in water. (c) Calculate the percentage of nitrogen in ammonia [N-14, H-1] Solution (a) The forward reaction is exothermic and the backward reaction is endothermic (b) When ammonia is dissolved in water, the pH of the water will increase implying that the solution will become alkaline. (c) Mr of NH3 = (14 x1) + (3x1)

When ammonia is heated with slaked lime, it will react as follows:

The ammonia gas produced is passed through the tower of calcium oxide commonly known as quicklime. Calcium oxide is used as a drying agent. Note that dying agents like sulphuric acid is not used ammonia is basic and it can react with it. Ammonia gas is collected by downward displacement of air because it is less dense than air. When air is completely displaced, the gas jar is removed from the tower and closed. Uses of ammonia (a) It is used in the manufacturing of explosives (b) It is used to manufacture glue and plastics (c) It is used as a refrigerant in the refrigerating plant (d) It is used as cleaning agent (e) It is used to manufacture nitric acid (f) It is used to manufacture fertilizers like ammonium sulphate and ammonia nitrate Example Study the diagram below showing preparation of ammonia

The mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen are fed into the reactor as shown in the above diagram. In the reactor, nitrogen and hydrogen react as follows: 2NH3(g) N2(g) + 3H2(g) The double arrows ( ) show that the reaction is reversible. This implies the reaction goes in the forward and backward direction. For hydrogen and nitrogen to react, certain conditions are required and these conditions are:

(e) If the temperature is too high in the reactor, the backward reaction will be favoured and ammonia will decompose at a faster rate to produce nitrogen and hydrogen hence the equilibrium position will shift to the left. (f) The function of the condenser is to liquefy (condense) ammonia gas to liquid ammonia

The diagram below some chemical reactions.

(a) Name gas X and Y (b) What is the chemical name for salt Z? (c) Write a balance chemical equation for the reaction nitric acid and NH3 gas (d) Explain why salt Z is used as a fertilizer (e) State two uses of ammonia (f) Briefly explain how you can show that the gas produced when gas X and Y react is ammonia.

DAILY QUOTE The reaction for nitrogen and hydrogen is to produce ammonia is as follows: Nitrogen + Hydrogen Ammonia (a) What does the symbol mean? (b) Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen (c) Describe the identity test for ammonia (d) Explain how iron speeds up the chemical reaction during Haber process (e) Explain what would happen if the temperature was too high in the reactor (f) What is the function of the condenser? Solution (a) The symbol mean that the reaction is reversible (b) N2(g) + 3H2(g) 2NH3(g) (c) Introduce a damp red litmus paper into a gas jar containing ammonia, the damp red litmus paper will turn blue (d) Iron speeds up the chemical reaction in the Haber process by lowering the activation energy

BRASILIA - Brazil registered a new record in Covid-19 cases and more than 1, 000 dead in a 24-hour period, according to official figures out on Thursday. The country has the world’s second highest number of confirmed novel Coronavirus cases 438, 238 after the United States. According to Health Ministry data, 26, 417 new cases were confirmed in a 24-hour-period ending late Thursday. In that same period, Brazil experienced its third highest number of virus deaths since the start of the pandemic: 1, 156, bringing the total death toll to 26, 754, the sixth highest in the world. Some experts however believe that the actual virus infection rate could be up to 15 times higher because there has been no widespread testing in Brazil. The virus is spreading as federal and local authorities clash over health policies. Most states have imposed partial lockdowns, but President Jair Bolsonaro wants them to end and for the economy to open quickly. – AFP.

President Trump their condolences and grief over the grim milestone, Trump was tweeting repeatedly about other issues. He posted more than 40 times on social media - on a variety of subjects but not about Covid-19 victims between Wednesday evening and his Thursday morning tweet that acknowledged the 100, 000 dead. Democrats savaged the president for appearing insensitive to the magnitude of the moment. “The day the United States hit 100, 000 deaths from the Covid-19 pandemic Trump shares a message calling himself ‘the greatest President in our history.’ His vanity is nauseating,” Congressman Don Beyer tweeted. Former Vice President Biden, who will challenge Trump for the White House in November, swiftly addressed the milestone by releasing a video message to survivors. – AFP.

China says coronavirus did not originate from Wuhan wet market - it was super-spreader site BEIJING - Experts still don’t know where the new coronavirus came from. Genetic evidence has all but confirmed that the virus originated in Chinese bats before it jumped to humans via an intermediary animal host. But where and how that spillover first happened is still up for debate. Initially, authorities in Wuhan, China, reported that the first cases of the virus emerged at the local Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. But following an investigation of the animals sold there, the Chinese Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said this week that it has ruled the site out as the origin point of the outbreak. According to the Wall Street Journal, Gao Fu, the director of the Chinese CDC, told Chinese state media: “It now turns out that the market is one of the victims.” Samples collected from animals at the market came back negative for the new coronavirus, suggesting that they couldn’t have infected shoppers. The cases linked to the wet market weren’t the first in China. Wuhan authorities first informed the World Health Organisation (WHO) about the unknown, pneumonialike illness that would later be identified as the new coronavirus on December 31. A majority of the initial 41 cases were linked to the wet market, which was shut down on January 1. – BUSINESS INSIDER, US.

After silence, Trump marks 100, 000 virus deaths in US WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Thursday marked the “sad milestone” of 100, 000 coronavirus deaths in the United States, after his earlier silence prompted criticism that he was failing in his duty to console victims and their loved ones. “We have just reached a very sad milestone with the coronavirus pandemic deaths reaching 100, 000,” Trump posted on Twitter, about 16 hours after the death toll passed the threshold according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker. “To all of the families & friends of those who have passed, I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy & love for everything that these great people stood for & represent. God be with you!” The US death toll, from 1.7 million confirmed infections, is by far the highest of any nation, and critics have accused the president of an inadequate early response to the pandemic. Trump has repeatedly said any death from Covid-19 is tragic. But he has been chided for appearing to concern himself more with the country digging out from economic devastation than consoling tens of thousands of American families shattered by the loss of loved ones. He has also been criticised for repeatedly offering unduly optimistic predictions about the final death count, only to be quickly contradicted each time by the relentlessly rising toll. On Wednesday, as many American politicians including the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden were sharing

The illicit trade in cigarettes in South Africa is now in full swing after the sale of tobacco was banned at the end of March as part of strict measures imposed to slow the spread of coronavirus, as the BBC reports. WHEREAS once Michelle could go to her local shop in South Africa’s commercial hub, Johannesburg, to buy cigarettes she is now having to do a secret deal. The 29-year-old economist finds sellers through contacts in WhatsApp groups and arranges a covert meeting to get her nicotine fix. “Once you’ve found a seller you can trust, a meeting point or pick-up point is arranged,” she said.

‘No chance to stock up’

Michelle, which is not her real name, is not the only one. What was perfectly legal two months ago has turned thousands of people into potential criminals. “No warning was given for the ban, so I personally wasn’t sufficiently prepared - either to get a stockpile or prepare to go without,” Michelle, who has been smoking for four years, said in an interview.

Smoking in South Africa - 37 percent of men aged 15 or over smoke - 8 percent of women aged 15 or over smoke - Most smoke between one and nine cigarettes a day - Smoking decreased since 1998 - $790m was raised in government revenue from smoking last financial year Source: SA Demographic and Health Survey 2016, Sars South Africa’s lockdown regulations are among the toughest in the world and also include a ban on the sale of alcohol. This will be relaxed from June 1, with people allowed to buy alcohol to drink at home and “only under strict conditions on specified days and for limited hours,” according to President Cyril Ramaphosa. However, he said the ban on the sale of cigarettes will remain “due to the health risks associated with smoking.”

CORONAVIRUS IN SOUTH AFRICA: Smokers fume at cigarette ban Covid-19. According to a 2016 government survey, more than nine million South Africans aged 15 and older smoke, burning through billions of cigarettes a year. “While I understand the health reasons that have now been brought forward, I would like the opportunity to decide for myself when and how to handle my smoking, especially as someone who also smokes as a way to deal with anxiety outside of medical treatment. I believe the ban is excessive,” Michelle said. She also thinks that driving the trade underground poses additional health risks at this time. The black-market seller is “someone who has potentially touched scores of other people trying to sell their cigarettes,” the young professional said. More than half a million people have added their names to an online petition calling for the government to change its mind. “We have been provided no scientific evidence to support a tobacco ban,” Bev Maclean, who started the petition, wrote. “With legal tobacco product sales being banned, consumers are turning to the illegal market and paying high prices for mostly illicit cigarettes that don’t pay taxes to government.” In the last financial year, South Africa’s tax collecting agency raised about $790m from tobacco sales. A two-month ban could therefore cost the government about $132m in lost revenue.

There is also the claim that the ban is unconstitutional.

The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita), which represents business

Smokers often use WhatsApp to contact their cigarette dealer, who then delivers to the door.

and smokers’ interests, has gone to court and argued that the decision on the ban was made without the correct legal framework.

Why did the government change its mind? Fita was particularly frustrated by what it describes as an “inexplicable about-turn” by the government. On April 23, President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a national address that tobacco sales would be allowed as the country eased lockdown restrictions for the first time. Six days later the minister in charge of the coronavirus response, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, announced that the ban would remain, which

upset a lot of smokers. “There must clearly have been a basis for the president… to clearly and unequivocally state: ‘The sale of cigarettes will be permitted,’” Fita head Sinenlanhla Mnguni wrote in court papers. “It is doubtful the president would have given that undertaking without proper consultation and a mandate.” Fita is demanding to see the papers that informed the government’s change of heart.

Quitters ‘benefit in hours’

But the government is not budging. Explaining the U-turn, President Ramaphosa said that “government is making every effort to act in a way that

advances the rights to life and dignity of all our people.” The authorities believe that by either reducing smoking, or even quitting, the chances of recovering from coronavirus are increased.

There are also general health benefits.

“The science says smokers begin to benefit from quitting a few hours after they quit,” explained Dr Catherine Egbe, who works in the alcohol, tobacco and drug unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC). Dr Egbe is one of the scientists who has publicly supported tobacco ban. “While we know the worst is not yet over, current statistics point to the fact that the country could be doing something right. “The pressure faced by the government is coming from those who want to prioritise profits over human lives,” said Dr Egbe.

Smoking less in lockdown

Cigarette dealers could spread coronavirus

The government justified the tobacco ban on health grounds based on advice from its own medical experts as well as from the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO said that although research is still being carried out, there was reason to believe that smokers would be more adversely affected than nonsmokers if they contracted

Along with the SAMRC, the Cancer Association of South Africa and the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, as well as a host of other health bodies, support the ban. And it seems that some people have been using this time to try and give up smoking. “We have seen a doubling in the number of calls that we normally receive on our Quitline,” said Savera Kalideen, executive director at the National Council Against Smoking. - BBC.

WINDHOEK - Namibia’s president Hage Geingob on Thursday admitted to breaching coronavirus regulations last month by hosting a celebration to mark his party’s 60th anniversary and subsequently fining all guests. The South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) birthday party took place in parliament on April 19, when Namibia was under lockdown and group gatherings were banned to limit the spread of coronavirus. “We had a very important occasion of the 60th anniversary of SWAPO,” Geingob confessed on Thursday during a press conference on the country’s Covid-19 response. “Although we were as little as ten leaders... we were found not on the right side of the regulations and law. We had to admit guilt and we were punished, we paid.” The guests included Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and SWAPO secretary-general

COVID-19 PARTY …Namibia’s president says held party under lockdown, fined all guests

President Hage Geingob Sophia Shaningwa All have since been fined N$2 000 ($115). Geingob raised controversy in March for inviting several

African presidents to his swearing-in ceremony, prompting them to breach their own travel bans. A small handful of leaders

still attended the event, including Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Angolan counterpart Joao Lourenco. Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi was forced to self-isolate for 14 days upon his return. Geingob has also come under fire for making public appearances without a face mask. The 78-year old president defended his behaviour on Thursday, claiming masks were only required in the workplace or for travel, shopping and outdoor exercise. Namibia started gradually easing its nationwide lockdown on May 4. The sparsely populated county has recorded just 22 coronavirus cases to date, none of which have been fatal. – AFP.

Protesters set Minneapolis police station ablaze MINNEAPOLIS (US) - A police station in Minneapolis has been set alight during a third night of protests over the death of an unarmed black man in custody on Monday. A police officer was filmed kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, 46, despite him saying he could not breathe. President Donald Trump said “thugs” were dishonouring his memory and called on the National Guard to restore order. Twitter accused Trump of glorifying violence in a post that said: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Floyd’s family have demanded that the four police officers implicated in his death face murder charges. Prosecutors have said they are still gathering evidence. Floyd’s brother, Philonise, told CNN on Thursday: “I’m never gonna get my brother back,” he said. “We need justice.” Speaking through tears, he said the officers who “executed my brother in broad daylight” must be arrested and that he was “tired of seeing black men die.”

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would shut down Twitter if his lawyers could find a way to do it. The president’s comments came as he signed an executive order seeking to crack down on Twitter and other social-media companies over allegations of censorship and bias against conservatives. After Trump signed the order, in which he emphasised his “commitment to free and open debate on the internet,” Trump said of Twitter, “I think we shut it down, as far as I’m concerned, but I’d have to go through a legal process. If it were able to be legally shut down, I would do it.” Trump signed the order two days after Twitter added fact-checking links - the first of their kind - to two of his tweets pushing false claims about voting by mail.

George Floyd The incident has added to longstanding anger over the police killings of black Americans, including the recent case of

Breonna Taylor in Kentucky. There have also been demonstrations in other US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix and Memphis. The last few days have seen buildings in Minneapolis burned to the ground or looted. On Thursday, protesters gathered outside the police department’s 3rd Precinct, which is near where Floyd died and has been the epicentre of the unrest. Officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the crowd. But the cordon around the police station was eventually breached by protesters, who set fire to it and two other nearby buildings as the officers withdrew. At a news conference yesterday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said there had been no choice but to evacuate the police station. Frey called the rioting and looting “unacceptable,” but he added that he and everyone else recognised there was “a lot of pain and anger” in the city. – BBC.

Trump takes on social media

According to a leaked draft of the document, Trump emphasised his “commitment to free and open debate on the Internet.” “Such debate is just as important online as it is in our universities, our businesses, our newspapers, and our homes,” the draft said. “In a country that has long cherished the freedom of expression, we cannot allow a limited number of online platforms to hand-pick the speech that Americans may access and convey online.” When he was asked Thursday whether he would delete his Twitter account, Trump said, “If we had a fair press in this country, I would do that in a heartbeat.” He added that his social-media presence allowed him to reach more

people. The president doubled down on his allegations of bias this week after Twitter factchecked his tweets claiming that mail-in ballots in California are “substantially fraudulent” and will result in a “Rigged Election.” Twitter’s alert linked to a “Moments” page titled “Trump makes unsubstantiated claim that mail-in ballots will lead to voter fraud” that listed a series of facts contradicting his claims. It pointed to the dearth of evidence supporting the claim that mail-in ballots are linked to voter fraud and noted that only registered voters could receive ballots and multiple states other than California use mail-in ballots. Trump accused the social-media platform

of “interfering in the 2020 Presidential Election” and said he wouldn’t allow Twitter to stifle free speech. Twitter later elaborated on its decision to fact-check the president’s tweets, saying it added the labels as “part of our efforts to enforce our civic integrity policy.” “We believe those Tweets could confuse voters about what they need to do to receive a ballot and participate in the election process,” Twitter said. Despite the president’s threats, First Amendment experts say he does not have the power to regulate or shut down social-media companies because he disagrees with them. – BUSINESS INSIDER, US.

Zim opposition leaders granted bail after ‘public violence’ charge

HARARE - Three Zimbabwean youth leaders were granted bail on Thursday after being charged with promoting “public violence” for taking part in a demonstration from which they were allegedly abducted by police, a lawyers rights group said. Joanna Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri went missing from a Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party protest in Zimbabwe’s capital Harare on May 13. They were found dumped on the side of the road two days later, covered in injuries and claiming they had been kidnapped by the police. On Wednesday, Zimbabwe’s national

police charged the trio for taking part in an “illegal demonstration” and inciting “public violence.” “The magistrate ordered them to pay Z$1, 000 ($40) bail each and report once a fortnight to the police,” Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights spokesman Kumbirai Mafunda told reporters outside Harare’s Magistrate Court on Thursday. The three women, who are prominent members of the MDC’s youth league, are still recovering from multiple injuries in hospital. MDC leader Nelson Chamisa said they had been severely beaten and sexually assaulted. Police have denied any involvement in the alleged abduction. – AFP.

Fresh jihadist violence hits northern Mozambique MAPUTO - Islamist militants terrorising remote communities in Mozambique’s Muslim-majority north mounted a fresh attack on Thursday, police sources said, striking Macomia district in an early morning assault. Gunmen forced the population of several thousand inhabitants to flee, while the military and police withdrew from the area according to a police officer who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity. – AFP.

Ex-mayor gets life for role in genocide KIGALI - Rwanda’s High Court on Thursday sentenced a former mayor to life in prison for his role in the country’s 1994 genocide, which included leading attacks that resulted in the deaths of around 25 000 ethnic Tutsis in his town. Ladislas Ntaganzwa was one of the top fugitive suspects, accused of playing a key role in the massacre of some 800 000 mostly Tutsi but also moderate Hutus, when he was arrested in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2015. – AFP.

Amnesty accuses Ethiopian security forces of extrajudicial killings ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopian security forces in the Oromiya region have executed 39 opposition supporters and arrested thousands of others accused of being members of an armed group, Amnesty International said yesterday. The rights group said in a report that victims were accused of being supporters of the Oromo Liberation Army, the breakaway armed wing of the Oromo Liberation Front, which the government had previously declared a terrorist movement but which has been unbanned by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. – REUTERS.

Taiwan decriminalises adultery in landmark ruling TAIPEI - Taiwan’s constitutional court yesterday decriminalised adultery in a landmark judgment aimed at upholding personal rights and privacy, scrapping a law that activists said discriminated against women. The democratic island became the latest place in Asia to strike down a ban on marital infidelity following South Korea in 2015 and India in 2018. The court struck down the adultery law that meant those who had sex with a married person, or with a person outside marriage, could face up to a year in jail. – REUTERS.

Teqball, Judo masks Chief Chamuka

with GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA

By SPORTS REPORTER TEQBALL Federation of Zambia in partnership with Zambia Judo Association (ZJA) have donated 1, 000 reusable masks to Chief Chamuka of the Lenje people of Central Province to be given to the underprivileged children in schools. Teqball president Dickson Jere and ZJA president Alfred Foloko yesterday made a joint donation to Chief Chamuka as part of their contribution to the fight against Covid-19 ahead of the re-opening of schools on Monday for learners in examination classes. The two sports organisations have each contributed 500 reusable masks to the Chamuka chiefdom. And speaking during the presentation, Jere said his association worked with ZJA to help in curbing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday FAZ vice president, Rix Mweemba indicated that the association is hoping to resume the league in the third week of June

‘GIVE US FOOTBALL’ From page 16

“It’s not possible for the league to return on June 21 when teams are not training. Teams need to start training now so that they get back in shape to avoid injuries. There are a lot of things FAZ need to put in place that is why we are appealing to the government to lift the ban.” He also challenged FAZ to present a clear road map to clubs on how it wishes to conclude the league. Chawezi said teams will need adequate time to prepare their stadiums and their players for the

restart to protect them from unnecessary injuries. “FAZ should quickly come up with a strategy of how teams will start participating in the league again. At least like we have seen in the EPL, it started with teams training in small groups,” he said. On Tuesday FAZ vice president, Rix Mweemba indicated that the association is hoping to resume the league in the third week of June with FIFA indicating financial assistance to the clubs which will have to play the remaining games behind closed doors.

Is Shonga over-rating himself? IN modern football, it is every player’s dream to be the most highly paid in any competitive league. But attracting a hefty salary comes at a cost of high performance from the player. This week, the South African media revealed the colossal salary former Nkwazi Football Club striker Justin Shonga has demanded from Young Africans of Tanzania. The striker, who plays for Orlando Pirates has struggled in the South African Premier League this season. Shonga has so far featured in eight out of 23 league matches for Pirates and is yet to score. And yet the Zambian international is demanding a whopping US$15, 000 (about K270, 000) salary from the Tanzanian giants if he is to join them. The Chipata-born player’s demands will see him become the highest paid in the Tanzanian Premier League and he will be getting more money than coach Luc Eymael at the club. But is this realistic for a player who has made only three starts for the “Buccaneers” this season? The 23-year-old must try to

move and find his feet by joining another club where he can earn more game time. Very few clubs would spend so much on a player who has not scored a goal all season as a centre forward. Shonga should put his feet down and put his career progression ahead of big monies. It is a fact that if he stays at Pirates he will continue warming the bench hence, he must push for a move as quickly as possible. The fight for places at Pirates has been stiff with Shonga clearly being relegated by Malawian striker Gabadinho Mhango who is the current league’s top scorer with 14 goals so far. Demanding for a huge salary won’t help Shonga, let him push for a move to a club where he can have more game time. Shonga is a talented striker and this could be a turning point for the Chipolopolo star. He needs to move to a team where he is guaranteed game time. Over-rating himself won’t do him any good. Clubs to decide Wildcat PFL fate By MICHAEL MIYOBA

Dickson Jere “Teqball and the Zambia Judo Association of Zambia have embarked on a vigorous campaign against Covid-19 by putting resources available for the underprivileged communities and athletes in various parts of the country,” Jere said. Meanwhile, Foloko reaffirmed sports federations’ commitment to supplementing the overnments’ efforts to stop the pandemic. “As sports leaders, we have joined G overnment and other stakeholders in fighting Covid-19 and we shall do so through sports,” Foloko said. He praised Chief Chamuka for his stance taken to support the girl child in his chiefdom. And Chief Chamuka thanked the two sports bodies for the donation and choosing his chiefdom as one of the first beneficiaries of the Covid-19 prevention measures ahead of the reopening of schools for examination classes on Monday.

WILDCAT Premier Futsal League (PFL) clubs will meet to decide the fate of the league, PFL chairman Tarak Mehta has said. Mehta said the league which was suspended after the government implemented a ban on contact sports to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic would resume or end prematurely after the meeting with the clubs. The PFL meeting is set for today at the PFL headquarters in Lusaka. Mehta said if it’s to resume, the

league will have to wait for proper guidelines from the government which is the biggest stakeholder in promoting the growth of futsal in Zambia. He said the Wildcat PFL will also have to come up with strict measures aimed at promoting the players’ safety if the league is to resume. “The Wildcat PFL remains suspended for now and this is in conformity to the directives from government which banned all contact sports. “We are committed to supplementing government’s efforts

Account for KoPa sales, FAZ told By MUKWIMA CHILALA

THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has been challenged to state how much has been generated from the sales in KoPa sports apparel. Soccer administrator Blackwell Siwale has wondered why FAZ had not declared what has been raised in the last two years that the KoPa was launched. Siwale noted that the project was bound to fail because it was being treated like it was the FAZ president’s personal brand. He said that the continued advertisement of the sports apparel by the FAZ president Andrew Kamanga on his social media pages created an impression that it was a personal project. Siwale said that the Secretariat should have

to stop the spread of the pandemic and that is why our league remains suspended until such a time when it will allow contact sports to return,” Mehta said. He is however comforted that the PFL will return after the return of contact sports in various African and European countries. Mehta reaffirmed PFL’s commitment to continue developing futsal as a sport which is loved by youths from different social backgrounds. Meanwhile, PFL defending champions, Automotive FC coach Andrea Christoforetti is hopeful

instead taken the leading role in advertising the sports apparel and not the sssociation president. “The narrative they peddled is that they will sell the brand but the KoPa has failed because the moment we usher in new office bearers it will not be on the agenda .It seems the brand is only Kamanga’s because if it was for the association we would have seen them advertising it vigorously but they are not,” Siwale said . “Why haven’t they declared what they have sold, they, they should tell us how much has been made from the KoPa. It’s a failed project,” But FAZ president Andrew Kamanga called on Zambians to embrace the KoPa sports apparel as it was an indigenously local brand. In his recent Facebook postings Kamanga said that the sportswear used by the national soccer team would soon be taken internationally . The FAZ president also called on local clubs to look to the KoPa for their sports apparel. The KoPa was launched in 2018 has since become the official wear of all Zambia national soccer teams and has been extended to some lower division sides.

that the PFL will bounce back soon following the anticipated new guidelines from government. “For now I can’t state how the league is going to end that is why we are meeting with the management of the PFL to decide the way forward. Clubs will have to give their view concerning what should happen,” Christoforetti said. Automotive dominate the 2019/2020 15-team Wildcat PFL table with 64 points, nine points ahead of second placed Alliance Inter who are on 55 points after 24 rounds of matches.

‘GIVE US FOOTBALL’ …Soccer-starved fans cry to Government to lift ban on contact sports

By MICHAEL MIYOBA THE Zambia Football Fans Association ZAFFA has called on government to consider lifting the ban on contact sports for the MTN/FAZ Super Division to resume on June 21 as planned by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ). ZAFFA general secretary Katwizi Chawezi said it is impossible for the league to return on June 21 as stated by FAZ because the ban on contact sports by the government is still in effect. Chawezi said the league can resume when the ban on contact sports is lifted. Chawezi said there is need for Zambia to emulate other African

SPAIN’S La Liga will resume on June 11 with next season starting on September 12, says the league’s president Javier Tebas. On Monday, Tebas said a behind closed doors derby between Real Betis and Sevilla could restart the campaign. “We’re prepared and the important thing will be the day we finish the league,” Tebas told aSpanish newspaper, Marca. Those watching at home can choose between two options - the real “silence” from the stadiums or “simulation of the crowds” with noises being played. Last Saturday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez gave permission for the country’s top two divisions to resume from June 8. La Liga players started training in groups of no more than 10 last week. Football in Spain was suspended on March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic and Tebas said the next objective was to progress
