COVID-19 CONSPIRACY MYTHS SOCIAL media is not short of conspiracy theories and myths concerning Covid-19. The most disturbing however is the suggestion that the virus and newly developed vaccine were intended to depopulate Africa. This cannot be further from the truth and yet some members of our society believe these myths. The most astounding however was the prayer by South African Chief Justice Justice Mogoeng who, while praying for assistance against the virus, suggested that some vaccines were "vaccines of the devil." “I lock out any vaccine that is not of you (God). If there be any vaccine that is of the devil, meant to infuse triple-six (sign of the devil) in the lives of people, meant to corrupt their DNA … Any such vaccine, Lord God almighty, may it be destroyed by fire in the name of Jesus,” he said in his prayer. Naturally, the remarks have angered scientists and others who feel that comments like these from someone of Mogoeng's influence and stature would mislead people pinning hopes on a vaccine. Health advocacy group the African Alliance has filed a formal complaint with the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) against the Chief Justice. Even EFF leader Julius Malema has criticised Mogoeng, for being a conspiracy theorist over the Covid-19 vaccines. For a country that has seen more than 1.5 million South Africans infected and over 35, 000 people killed, the conspiracy theory is the last thing the country would want. That is why we share the anger Malema expressed over the use of the church to perpetrate a conspiracy theory that has no basis in fact “We have given room to these conspiracy theories. Perhaps if we were producing our own vaccine, we would not have some unfounded stories like 666 vaccines. Where have you ever had such madness? There is no such vaccine. “Today, people who claim to be Christians, people who claim to be worshipping God and denounce African medicine and who survive through Western medicine want to come and tell us there is a 666 vaccine,” Malema said. Zambia has been inundated by all manner of theories with claims that the virus and vaccine were engineered to depopulate the continent. Sadly many people have believed this myth including the current notion that the virus does not exist. That 5G electro magnetic waves were responsible for damaging blood cells which in turn caused Covid-19. The spread of the disease in Zambia clearly discounts this 5G theory because this technology still has to reach many parts of the country. Another video claiming to emanate from the United Kingdom is doing the rounds on social media suggesting that scientists had failed to prove the existence of the virus. The truth is that scientists have not only proved the existence of the virus but have been able to isolate different variants of the virus. That is why they have recognised a South African variant. In Kenya scientists have found more than 15 variations. At this time when the infection rate has increased to astronomical proportions, it is irresponsible for any person to cast aspersion against vaccines which may actually hold some hope.
FOUR gold mining cooperatives in Rufunsa have not yet accessed the mining equipment which Government procured even after signing an agreement with ZCCMIH. Chimwetu Gold Mining Cooperative chairman, Emmanuel Tembo, confirmed this to the Daily Nation in an interview yesterday. He said that the mining equipment was at the District Commissioner’s office. Mr Tembo said that the four cooperatives finally agreed to the terms after a series of discussions with ZCCM-IH, but had not yet accessed the equipment after the signing of the agreement in December last year. He said that the equipment was kept at the DCs office on condition that it would only be released after the agreement
By KETRA KALUNGA ABOUT 22, 000 election monitors will be deployed by the Democratic and Motherland Defenders Coalition (DMDC) to monitor Zambia’s August the general elections. And the coalition has requested the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to participate in conducting an independent audit of the voter’s register. DMDC spokesperson, Andrew Ntewewe, said at a media briefing that the coalition would stand vigilant in monitoring elections. Mr Ntewewe, who is the Young African Leaders
with ZCCM-IH was signed. He was however disappointed that none of the cooperatives had accessed the equipment. Mr Tembo said that members were concerned that ZCCM-IH had not even brought back the signed agreement for the cooperatives to present to the District Commissioner. He pointed out that the District Commissioner cannot release the equipment without proof of the signed agreement and a go ahead from ZCCMIH. Mr Tembo revealed that the cooperatives were not mining and therefore could not even trade with ZCCM-IH because they had no gold to sell. He said that the only trade that was going on in Rufunsa was between illegal gold miners and private buyers. Mr. Tembo said the

Cop denies killing suspect
By GRACE CHAILE-LESOETSA
A POLICE officer has denied murdering a suspect, claiming the victim died from the injuries he sustained after falling off the cliff in an attempt to escape arrest. Constable Sam Phiri 39, of Kafue Estate denied beating Vincent Mweemba of Chirundu during an interrogation. Phiri of Chirundu police station and Constable Richard Nyirenda are jointly charged with the murder of Mweemba aged 35 which happened on August 17, 2019 in Chirundu. The victim was arrested together with Misheck Mwachipisha for theft of goods in transit. Phiri and Nyirenda pleaded not guilty to the charge in the Lusaka High Court. However in November last year, Judge Mwape Bowa found the two officers with a case to answer and placed them on their defence. A State Forensic Pathologist,
cooperatives were confident that the relationship with ZCCM-IH would yield the expected results. He noted that following the signing of the agreement, the cooperatives would only trade with ZCCM-IH which was offering a better price for the gold than private buyers. He appealed to ZCCM-IH to ensure that the copies of the agreement were brought back for the cooperatives to present to the District Commissioner and eventually collect the equipment. And Pokela Gold Mining Cooperative chairman, Josias Malunga, observed that the delay in handing over the equipment was not in the best interest of both parties. Meanwhile, ZCCM-IH public relations Manager, Louisa Kakoma, refused to comment as she was not in the office by press time.
Dr Adam Muchelenganga, had testified that Mweemba died of blunt impact trauma to the head, torso and limbs as a result of beatings during police interrogation. Phiri said they arrested Mwachipisha who alleged that he was hired by Mweemba to carry goodsfrom Mulyakapoka hills. Phiri said Mwachipisha was arrested and he led the officers to Mweemba’s home. He said the two suspects were arrested at around 23:00hours and taken to Malengo camp. He said on their way to the camp they interviewed the suspects and Mweemba agreed to show them where the other items were hidden in Mulaykapoka hills. “As he was trying to lead us, he escaped and fell off the cliff which was 10 to 15 meters to the ground. Nyirenda fired a warning shot and I went and stood where Mweemba jumped off from and we heard him scream,” he said.
biased, they must avoid the temptation to get involved in local politics,” the coalition said. Meanwhile, the coalition has urged the ECZ to begin instituting measures that would guide the country in adhering to the prescribed coronavirus protocols during the election period. M Ntewewe proposed that the ECZ should coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in implementing covid-19 measures by limiting the number of international observers.

Health expert calls for country lockdown By OLIVER SAMBOKO GOVERNMENT should consider locking down the country with exception of essential sectors, to stop the spread of Covid-19, a health expert Teddy Mulenga has advised. And Zambia has recorded 1700 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours from the 9038 test done. The country has also recorded 5 deaths and 936 recoveries within the same period. Dr Mulenga however said to slow down the steep rise in Covid-19 cases, certain radical measures should be implemented. He said among the measures Government should take is the lockdown of all nonessential businesses to decongest public places such as markets and bus stations. “Only essential sectors such as pharmacies and food shops should remain open but with limited hours of operation,” he said. Dr Mulenga advised Government to close down bars and night clubs, ban all political rallies, church gatherings, large funeral processions and weddings as these have been identified as super spreaders of the virus. He said masking up should be made mandatory and those found not adhering to Covid-19 health measures should be punished.
Linda Kasonde is hallucinating, says Tutwa By SILUMESI MALUMO LINDA Kasonde is hallucinating to suggest that the Chief Justice forms a tribunal against ministers who have not declared their assets and liabilities, Government Deputy Chief Whip Tutwa Ngulube has said. Mr Ngulube said Ms Kasonde's utterances clearly showed she was a frustrated individual and challenged her to prove that UPND Members of Parliament had declared their assets, liabilities and income. Ms Kasonde, the executive director of Chapter One Foundation, has lodged a complaint to the Chief Justice, Irene Mambilima to institute a tribunal to investigate 40 ministers, including the Speaker of the National
Ms Kasonde Assembly, Dr Patrick Matibini, for allegedly failing to declare assets and liabilities between 2016 and 2020. Ms Kasonde stated that annual asset declarations made in accordance with the Parliamentary and Ministerial Code of Conduct, Chapter 16 of the Laws of Zambia are submitted to the office of the Chief Justice and kept on a register that the public could inspect. But Mr Ngulube, who is also Kabwe Central MP, said it was important people stop misleading the nation. He said in an interview yesterday that ministers declare their assets every year and the public can get such information from Cabinet Office.

‘ACC IS TOOTHLESS’
By SILUMESI MALUMO
T
HE Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is toothless and has failed to nip corruption in the bud, says United Party for Prosperous Zambia (UPPZ) president Charles Chanda. Mr Chanda urged the ACC to up its game to curb corruption in the country. He said the conduct of the ACC was making the work of President Edgar Lungu difficult. Mr Chanda said the ACC needed to be alert all the time and ensure that cases of corruption were pursued vigorously. He said in an interview yesterday that the ACC was not
supposed to act after a public outcry because that showed that it was incompetent. “What we have right now is a weak Anti-Corruption Commission because it is unable to bite the perpetrators of corruption. The issue of Honeybee was revealed by whistle blowers and it has been in the media several times but nothing has been done. “If we really had the AntiCorruption Commission in Zambia whatever is happening should have been attended to and those found wanting they were supposed to be brought to book right now,” he said. Mr Chanda said the ACC should be on top of things to inform the public about individuals involved in corruption, which was disadvantaging the
Mr Chanda growth of the country. “Why should ACC wait for the President to fire a minister and then portray as if they are working and telling the nation that it has been investigating
the matter for some time now? We have a weak commission that is why we are seeing corruption activities continue to rise,” Mr Chanda said.
PAC grills Education Perm Sec By KALOBWE BWALYA THE Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has wondered why Ministry of General Education Permanent Secretary for Administration Jabbin Mulwanda has appeared again this year over audit queries when he had assured last year of either reduced or zero irregularities going forward. PAC chairperson, Howard Kunda, was taken aback to see Dr Mulwanda appearing
before the committee again this year because of the numerous irregularities in the Ministry of General Education cited in the latest Auditor General’s Report. “PS, we have seen and we know that you have been on record when you appeared before this committee and you promised that you were not going to be seen here with so many irregularities. And from page one to page 13, we have seen that there are failures. When are these failures going to stop?” Mr Kunda said. Mr Kunda, who is Muchinga
Member of Parliament, said he expected management at Ministry of General of Education to deal with failures so that they did not resurface. “Last year, we were talking about the same failures, this year, we are talking about the same failures. Why is it that this ministry, we are continuously seeing these failures? Why, PS?” he said. Milenge MP, Mwansa Mbulakulima, wondered if the recommendation to have two Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry of General Education was serving its purposes
because irregularities had continued. Mr Mbulakulima asked Dr Mulwanda what should be done at the mMinistry to bring a stop to irregularities. “Last year, we saw many accountants being dismissed. This year, it’s going the same direction. What kind of ministry is this?!” Mr Mbulakulima wondered. In response, Dr Mulwanda admitted that he had previously promised to act on the irregularities and that signs were there to that effect.
Zambia ranked third in agribusiness By AARON CHIYANZO
WORLD Bank has ranked Zambia third in SubSaharan Africa with regard to providing an enabling environment for agribusiness to thrive in the private sector. According to the Enabling the Business of Agriculture (EBA), 2019 report, Zambia on a scale of 0-100 scored above average overall for countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and countries in a similar income group with an aggregate score of 63.73. It indicates that Zambia scored particularly well in areas such as availability of seed, access to fertilisers, availability of water resources, plant protection and access to finance. World Bank Group, Country Manager, Sahr Kpundeh, said at the EBA 2019 Report dissemination event that Zambia performs well in regulations related to supplying seed, registering fertiliser, securing water, and in accessing finance. Dr Kpundeh however said there was room for

improvement in regulations on protecting plant health, using machinery, trading food, and sustaining livestock. He said the agricultural sector plays a critical role in the economy and was the largest employer in Zambia, creating opportunities for nearly 50 percent of the workforce. Dr Kpundeh said the agriculture sector contributed to the economy at an estimated eight percent of GDP. And Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary, Songowayo Zyambo, said Government was pleased with the score, and remained determined to facilitate more improvements in future. Mr Zyambo said Zambia was aware that agricultural development could only be accelerated through private sector participation in value chains. Mr Zyambo said with the publication of the report by the World Bank, the ministry would now have a benchmark

‘ZABS condoms results faulty’ From Page 1 Both firms indicated that they had state of the art inhouse laboratory that conduct pre-delivery quality control while other samples were sent to independent tests from other reputable laboratories to ascertain ZABS’ claims. They have now demanded for an independent evaluation of the ZABS test. Universal Prophylactic PVT Limited of India, the manufacturer of the condoms and Adeshwar Meditex Limited which manufactured the gloves have all discredited the results from ZABS. “We have found some discrepancies in their report. It has mentioned length of condom as 195mm as not being acceptable but it is acceptable as per ISO 4075: 2015 and WHO specifications. The ISO 4074: 2015 standard says that minimum length required is 180mm and both standard and specification have not mentioned maximum limits of length,” Universal Prophylactic said in a letter to Honey Bee dated January 12, 2021. Universal Prophylactic indicated the burst volume, hang and roll, and package integrity of the condoms conformed to the required standards and specifications after further tests. “We do not agree with the
report, we are not aware of procedure and parameters used during testing and no representatives of manufacturer and supplier were invited or present at the time when tests were conducted,” the company lamented. And Adeshwar stated that it seriously doubted if sampling standards and inspection protocols provided under ISO 11193: 2008 were followed by ZABS when conducting tests. “Our company is GMP, CE and ISO 13485-2016 certified, with exports to more than 40 countries,” Adeshwar stated in its separate letter to Honey Bee. Honey Bee Pharmacy is accused of supplying defective condoms and gloves to the Ministry of Health but has rubbished claims. And when contacted for a comment, ZABS executive director, Manuel Mutale said he was constrained to comment on the matter as he has to respect confidentiality for the client’s results. “I have no authority to comment on the matter. ZABS is just a laboratory, and as a laboratory, we can just be contracted to do the test and give the results to the client but I cannot start commenting on the results in public,” Mr Mutale said.
‘Calls to revoke Chilufya’s practising licence nonsensical’ By SILUMESI MALUMO IT is absurd and nonsensical to demand that former Health minister, Chitalu Chilufya’s medical practicing licence be revoked when he has not been proclaimed guilty of anything, former deputy minister of Finance, Danny Pule has said. Dr Pule said the termination of contract of service does not mean that he was guilty because President Edgar Lungu has the right to hire and fire at will. He was reacting to Southern Africa Network Against Corruption director, Gregory Chifire’s demands that Dr Chilufya’s medical practicing licence be revoked.
Mr Chifire claimed that the former minister had gone against the sacred Hippocratic Oath. But Dr Pule, who is also Christian Democratic Party president said the former minister of Health can only be subjected to punishment if he was guilty of an offence. Dr Pule said in an interview yesterday that as long as the minister was not involved in the Honeybee scandal his practicing licence cannot be revoked. He said all those calling for the revocation of the practising licence were misplaced and do not understand the procedure on how licences for medical practitioners were revoked.

AVOID PEOPLE BENT ON SELLING NATIONAL ASSETS - CHAMA By SILUMESI MALUMO
Z Mr Chama
AMBIANS should not elect individuals preoccupied with selling national assets once they got into office, Minister of Defence Davies Chama has said. Mr Chama said it was UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s statements and desire to sell the presidential jet had just shown Zambian people what kind of
person he really was. He maintained that Mr Hichilema’s statements on the sale of the Presidential Jet are reckless. Mr Chama said the security of Zambia would remain intact and would not be threatened by mere politicking of some desperate politicians. Mr Chama said that the reckless statement by UPND president Hakainde Hichilema to sell assets will not distabilise the
security of the country. The minister said it was only important that the people of Zambia did not elect an individual who only had a mind of selling national assets. He said in an interview “Such people if elected they can even sell State House to their brothers and cronies saying that it is old and we need to a new one.” Mr Chama said national assets, whether for the defence force or not should not
be tempered with because they were critical to the Zambian people. “That aircraft this person is talking about cannot even go anywhere, this is the plane which all the Presidents who will come after President Edgar Lungu will be using. So we shouldn’t even waste our time to start championing cheap manifesto which has no benefit to Zambians,” Mr Chama said. Mr Chama, therefore,
challenged the media to concentrate on reporting on issues that would have a positive impact on the Zambian people instead of promoting meaningless issues. He said the Patriotic Government had done a lot in terms of development which had an impact on Zambians and this is what the nation needed to know about.

Govt urged to create more provinces By PETER SICHALI GOVERNMENT should create more provinces to enhance development and public services in all corners of the country, Former Transport and Communications Deputy Minister Alfred Ndhlovu has said. Mr Ndhlovu said President Edgar Lungu should consider dividing some provinces for efficiency and effective service delivery. He said some provinces had suffered underdevelopment due to vastness, making it difficult for effective service delivery. Mr Ndhlovu said Copperbelt, Southern, Lusaka and Eastern Provinces should be dividing into two or three to enhance development. “Eastern should be demarcated so that the Kacholola side can be another province, Southern Province should be divided into two provinces so that we can have East South and West South. One can have Livingstone area as provincial capital while the other one can have Mazabuka has provincial capital,”Mr Ndhlovu said. Lungu lauds Zambia, Egypt ties By MUKWIMA CHILALA PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has praised Egypt's contribution towards achieving social development and economic growth in African countries. And President Lungu has lauded the relationship which Zambia and Egypt enjoy, saying it has translated into economic development that has benefited citizens from the two countries. The President said bilateral relationship between the two countries has demonstrated cooperation in many areas of mutual interest. “This is the way how cooperation should be that translated into people benefits and not leaders,” President Lungu said. President Lungu said this when outgoing Egyptian Ambassador to Zambia, Ahmed Mostafa, paid a courtesy call on him at State House yesterday. The Head of State reiterated the call for African Leaders to provide leadership to grow the African continent without depending on the outside world. President Lungu praised Mr Mostafa’s immense contribution to the strengthened relationship between Zambia and Egypt. “You worked very well with us in Zambia and I wish you well and pass my greetings to President of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi,” President Lungu said. And Mr Mostafa commended the contin-

was addressed by bringing on board the 750 megawatts Kafue Gorge Lower power plant. He said in an interview yesterday that the power utility company was working round the clock to ensure that the commissioning of units was actualised. Mr Nkhuwa said: “People need to be patient regarding the commissioning of the Kafue Gorge Lower. At an appropriate time we will inform as when the first unit will be commissioned.” He said that Zambians should not believe that Government was playing politics over the issue which was critical to the country’s economy.
the ‘build back better’ programme, each affected family would be given 10 pockets of cement and 12 roofing sheets to put up better structures. He said the DMMU would give food to the affected families from now up to the end rainy season. "We have done the tour of the township and we have seen the problems caused by the heavy rains. There are more than 200 families affected "So, as DMMU, we will help the affected families with the build back better programme where each family will receive 10 bags of cement and 12 roofing

"Regardless of whether this is unplanned settlement or not, Government will always move in, to protect the lives of the people. “This is why I am telling you that people should not be allowed to construct structures on the banks of the rivers or streams. When people's houses collapse, it becomes costly to look after the people, " Mr Kabwe noted.
NOW that we are in the election year, it is our expectation that all political parties intending to contest the general elections will hold their conventions, United National Independence Party (UNIP) has said. Acting National Chairman Captain Robert Mukengami says that the holding of conventions to elect new leaders is the only way some political parties will show democracy in their party hierarchy. Captain Mukengami who is also the Provincial Chairman for Southern Province has therefore, called on all political parties in the country to emulate UNIP' step to hold its national congress. He told the Daily Nation in Livingstone that his party will be hold its congress to elect new leaders in readiness for the August general elections. Captain Mukengami said that it is unfortunate that some political parties in the country have never gone for a conversion from the time they were formed a situation he described as undemocratic. "Let all political parties that want to contest this year's general elections prove to the people that they are democratic by holding their national conventions before August. We have seen some political parties where their leaders are 'muyayaya'.. that is not democracy," he said. He said that in order to instill confidence in the people of Zambia, there is need for political players to respect and follow their party constitutions. Captain Mukengami said this is in order to renew their mandate with the people they lead.

ZAMBIA, USA SEAL BUSINESS FUNDING PACT By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
Z
AMBIA has signed an agreement with the United States of America which will open up possible funding for businesses from both countries. Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) signed on behalf of Zambian businesses while United States Africa Trade Council signed for U.S businesses. The agreement is with immediate effect. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will provide funding opportunities for businesses from both countries while creating linkages, says ZACCI president, Chabuka Kawesha.
Dr Kawesha said during the signing of the MoU in Lusaka yesterday that the agreement would create a platform for business linkages from both countries. “You may be a local investor interested in investing in the U.S so it is not a one way agreement. The initiative is bilateral. You may want as a Zambian to invest in U.S. So those are initiatives and opportunities,” he said. Dr Kawesha said the MoU was meant to promote internationalisation of Zambian products and services to the U.S market. He said it would help in trade facilitation through the reduction of transaction costs in national and international economies and strengthen trade possible ways and elimination of procedures.
“We enter into this MoU with the desire to contribute to the development and sustenance of the well-being of the people of Zambia by ensuring that mutual beneficial. Economic corporation among countries is vital in job creation economic growth,” he said. United States Africa Trade Council-Atlanta Chairperson, Elizabeth Nkumbula, said the MoU would facilitate market research and information of any funding which was available to the United States for the Zambian businesses. Dr Nkumbula said the Unites States offered the largest consumer market and that it was an investment destination and a platform for global growth. “This is why the signing of this agreement is such a
significant event. It shows that even amidst a pandemic and the worst recession in decades, our countries are committed to work together to prosper our economies,” she said. Dr Nkumbula stressed the need to explore all avenues to benefit, and diversify Zambia’s economy. She said Zambia’s lack of economic diversification made it vulnerable to fluctuations in the world commodities market. “Zambia has a generous natural resource endowment. Ample mineral resources, a vast amount of arable land and high potential in tourism and hydropower, make Zambia a resource rich country, providing a strong economic base,” she said.

ZAM prods firms to pay taxes timely By BUUMBA CHIMBULU THE private sector should meet tax obligations to assist Government recover the K3 billion it will forego due to the zero rating of the fuel importation, the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) has advised. Government this month included diesel and petrol on the zero-rating schedule of the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act which came effective on 1st January, 2021.
This move however means that Government will this year lose K3 billion revenue collection. In response, ZAM vice president-South, Chipego ZuluChileshe, said in an interview that the loss of revenue called for strong adherence to tax obligations by the private sector to assist in recovering the K3 billion. “In zero rating, Government is foregoing K3 billion revenue and that calls for us the private sector to ensure that we are performing.
Kpundeh said. He said EBA’s results were relevant for the world Bank’s portfolio in Zambia, which consisted of an operation implemented by the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry that supported agribusiness and farmers’ groups linking them with large potential buyers. Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary, Songowayo Zyambo, observed that there was still room for improvement in the sector despite registering substantial growth over the years. Mr Zyambo said Government was aware that there was also need to improve farmer access ti irrigation and mechanization, as indicated by the EBS report for 2019. He reiterated Government’s commitment to supporting agribusiness and the private sector to ensure that they took a leading role in food production as well as the development of robust food supply chains. “Government has prioritised measures to improve access to irrigation and mechanisation of the 20202023 Economic Recovery Programme (ERP), which “I therefore wish to cal for the continued partnership between Government and cooperating partners to achieve the targets which have been set in the ERP,” Mr Zyambo said.

THE World Bank is considering a new engagement to support creating more rural jobs through agribusinesses in Zambia. World Bank Group Country Manager, Sahr Kpundeh, said the engagement would address the high unemployment rates especially in rural areas. Dr Kpundeh said the engagement would be implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture. He said this during this the meeting during the virtual launch of the Enabling Business in Agriculture (EBA) Report. “The sector consists of mainly subsistence farming, rain-fed dependent, with limited number of commercial farmers. However, demand is increasingfor high value food items in Zambia, while limited number of these items us being produced locally. “The impact of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the closure of borders revealed the need to improve the level of value addition to agriculture in Zambia, and to gradually substitute imports,” Dr

“We need to ensure that we feed back into the tax system through tax compliance and basically delivering on our tax obligations so that the K3 billion can be recovered in the form of increased performance from the private sector,” she said. Ms Zulu-Chileshe said zero rating of VAT on diesel and petro came as a surprise to the vast majority of the private sector. She said the cost of energy had always been a major concern indicating that: “A measure to ensure that we maintain the current prices as opposed to an increment is a welcome move.” Meanwhile, Ms ZuluChileshe commended the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) for commitment to pay off VAT refunds. ZRA Commissioner
General on Wednesday announced that K12.9 billion tax refunds were last year paid out to key economic sectors. Out of this amount, K8.5 billion (67 percent) was paid to the mining sector. “Going forward off course we recognise there are other measures that ZRA and Government have put in place to try and ensure that the private sector are stimulated for growth such as suspension of customs duty on manufacturing inputs. “That is important because manufacturers can now apply to get customs duty reduced or removed in order to make locally produced products more affordable on the market. This is important to stimulate purchases of consumers and help to stabilise the economy,” Ms Zulu-Chileshe said.

MOODY’S: HIGHER DEBT, LOWER GROWTH TO PLAGUE SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA IN 2021 JOHANNESBURG - Sub-Saharan African sovereigns will be battling lower growth and revenue as well as higher debt levels and weaker debt affordability into 2021, according to Moody’s. The ratings agency on Wednesday issued a 2021 outlook report. It noted that the region will be challenged by the aftermath of Covid-19 on growth and revenue. Moody’s noted that in 2020 negative ratings actions in the region exceeded prior years. “Our outlook for Sub-Saharan African (SSA) creditworthiness in 2021 is negative … We expect SSA sovereigns to face severe challenges in grappling with the fallout from the coronavirus shock as lower overall economic growth and revenue coupled with higher government expenditure will lead to wider fiscal deficits
and higher debt,” the report read. While growth in the region was le affected than other regions in the world in 2020, Moody’s warned the impact of the economic contraction – the first in three decades – will be greater. The region’s long-term economic recovery has also been described as “precarious” as most SSA sovereigns have limited fiscal space to counter the negative impacts of the pandemic. Moody’s noted South Africa and eSwatini will not recover to their 2019 real GDP levels until 2023. “GDP growth of 4.5 percent in South Africa will support small economies that have strong ties to the country such as eSwatini, which we forecast will grow by 1.4 percent,” Moody’s noted. The World Bank forecasts the SA economy to grow by 3.3 percent in 2021.
The region will experience rising debt burdens, including higher debt servicing costs. “Persistent fiscal deficits amid the challenging growth outlook will keep debt burdens elevated for SSA sovereigns well into the medium term,” the report read. “The average debt burden in the region will hover around 64 percent of GDP in the near to medium term compared to the 47 percent average in 2015-19. We do not expect debt burdens to come down in the foreseeable future as revenue generation capacity remains weak.” However, the ratings agency noted funding costs have come down given the policy actions of central banks around the world, but for most countries in SSA they are still higher than before the pandemic. – FIN24.
New York City to pull $17m of contracts with Trump Org WASHNGTON - New York City will end all business with the Trump Organisation after US President Donald Trump encouraged mobs to storm the Capitol in Washington, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “The contracts make very clear: If the leadership of a company is engaged in illegal activity, we have the right to sever the contract, the mayor said on Wednesday on an appearance on MSNBC. “Inciting an insurrection against the US government clearly constitutes criminal activity.” The city expects a legal challenge, but “we’re on strong legal ground,” de Blasio said. “They have profited from these contracts. They will profit no longer.” Eric Trump, the president’s son, who helps run the family business, said the group plans to “fight vigorously,” in a statement he gave to ABC on Wednesday. “The city of New York has no legal right to proceed, they will owe the Trump Organisation over $30 million,” Trump said. “This is nothing more than political discrimination.” New York will join a parade of businesses that are refusing to work with the besieged president after he encouraged a mob of supporters to storm the Capitol last week. - BLOOMBERG NEWS.
HARARE – The Southern African Development Community (Sadc) has adopted a new Labour Migration Action Plan to promote skills transfer and match labour supply and demand for regional integration. The action plan was adopted through the employment and labour sector in the region and in line with Article 19 of the Sadc Protocol on Employment and Labour. In a statement released this week, Sadc said the protocol seeks to protect and safeguard the rights and welfare of migrant workers to give them better opportunities to contribute to countries of origin and destination. “Sadc has adopted a new Labour Migration Action Plan (2020-2025) as part of efforts to promote skills transfer and match labour supply and demand for regional development and integration.” Sadc executive secretary Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax is on record saying the action plan is an integral part of measures aimed at the progressive elimination of obstacles to the free movement of capital and labour, goods and services, and of the people in the region. Generally, this is in line with Article 5 of the Sadc Treaty. Sadc is host to 37.5 percent of Africa’s 14.2 million international migrant workers,
according to the 2017 African Union estimates. Southern African region is also home to the largest stock of international migrant workers of up to 4.2 million, ahead of both East Africa and West Africa, with intraSadc migration accounting for about 45 percent. “Given this background, it is envisaged that implementation of the adopted policy instrument, through a multi-sectoral approach, will contribute to the protection of labour migrants’ rights and give them an opportunity to make a greater developmental impact on both countries of origin and destination,” said Sadc. Meanwhile, the employment and labour sector also adopted the Sadc Guidelines on Portability of Social Security Benefits to ensure workers moving within the region maintain social security rights and benefits acquired under the jurisdiction of different member States, including pension benefits and occupational injury and diseases benefits. In her report to the 40th Sadc Summit, Dr Tax also said as part of implementation of the 2016 Sadc Youth Employment Promotion Policy Framework, the secretariat and the International Labour Organisation jointly conducted a study of the youth labour markets within the bloc. – THE HERALD,

Beitbridge closure: Cross-border traders in a scramble for livelihoods JOHANNESBURG - The closure of the Beitbridge border post for general entry and departure will not have much of an impact on the Zimbabwean economy as the transportation of fuel, cargo and goods will still be allowed, the head of a local business body said on Tuesday. This, however, is not the case for small businesses operating in both South Africa and Zimbabwe, who will likely bear the brunt as the new arrangements leave crossborder traders scrambling to work around a lack of flexibility. Late on Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa would close 20 land border posts until 15 February to curb the spread of
Covid-19. South Africa is Zimbabwe’s biggest trading partner, with the southern African country exporting goods worth US$1.57 billion to South Africa for the 11 months to November 2020. In turn, Zimbabwe, which is the gateway to other regional countries up north, imported goods worth US$2.2 billion from South Africa, according to data released by the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency on Tuesday. Ramaphosa said congestion at border posts had exposed many people to Covid-19 infections as they waited to be processed. Beitbridge is one of the busiest ports of entry and its closure could hurt businesses, especially in border towns like Musina in South Africa and
Beitbridge in Zimbabwe. But Beitbridge Business Association chairman Nkululeko Milidi said the impact would be minimal as the commercial side would be allowed to continue operating. Some people would still be allowed to enter or depart the country for certain reasons, including the transportation of fuel, cargo and goods, according to Ramaphosa. Milidi said the business community had trucks that were allowed to buy groceries across the border. “In any case, the Zimbabwean side had already stopped general departures to South Africa, so this makes sense, it is for our safety. We, however, still have trucks that bring in commercial cargo.”– FIN24.
HARARE - Africa’s education and financial services sectors offer the best opportunities in the post-Covid-19 period, as the pandemic speeds up a shift into digital ways of living and working, two prominent investors said yesterday. “Digital infrastructure businesses at this point in time are probably the ones that investors are most excited about,” Jihan Abass, founder and chief executive of Lami, a Kenyan digital insurance platform, told the Reuters Next conference. Her Nairobi-based firm, which sought to upend the staid insurance world of the East African nation by allowing consumers to buy motor insurance on their mobile phones through instalments, has seen increased demand since the pandemic started, she said. Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, the general partner of the Nigeria-based Fund for Africa’s Future, an investment vehicle focused on African start-ups, said investment in education technologies will offer attractive returns as the sector bounces back. “The hardest hit sector in the Covid-19 was education because they were so unprepared for the tsunami,” Aboyeji told the conference, adding that technology solutions to support learning in all institutions is low-hanging fruit. “They are so under-invested in terms of new technologies to assist them.” But the exuberance about the opportunities in tech is being tempered by new regulatory hurdles, as governments look to generate revenue from the fast-growing digital services sector. – REUTERS.

Protectionist approach necessary to save mines Dear Editor, THERE are some discrepancies which have given us a well-founded that the promise by UPND to bring Vedanta Resources is misinformed. On one hand, the Government has taken the protectionist approach to restore the promise of certainty in the mining sector. The intention by UPND to impose Vedanta Resources on the miners suggests that the party is not acting in the interests of miners but that of the investors. We say so because the ill treatment that the miners were subjected to is common knowledge. Therefore UPND is endorsing the exploitation that the miners endured. As regards the policy direction which the nation should take, it is regrettable that the UPND has constantly relieved on the sustained negative media campaigns with the view to mislead the unsuspecting Zambians who may not be privy to the

Zambia’s local economy needs balanced economic recovery policies! Dear Editor, ZAMBIA’S economic fundamentals are not speaking rightly, and what we need as a nation is to start promoting locally produced goods and we need to quickly strengthen local content policies to favour domestic engagement of Zambian citizens. We also need to constitute a national economic steering committee to provide objective business and investment leadership from nonpartisan perspectives. As a nation, we need to revisit many of our policies and gravitate policies around economic recovery programmes. The government should work and try to bring out incentivised formula with a clear view to spur local participations amidst seemingly difficult times. With the advent of Covid-19, there is a need to implement local content policy so that locals can fully participate in the economic activities of this nation and this move can help mitigate capital flight and avoid the usual destabilisation of the local forex market. KELVIN CHAISANGA.

realities on the round. Like we have consistently maintained, the UPND has used the misfortunes in the mining sector to gain political milage at the instance of pondering on what the future holds for the miners. There has been a number of innuendos that have been spread with the view to creating discord and in turn translate into political fortunes. For instance, some few months ago, UPND alleged that KCM has reportedly been sold to an unnamed Chinese but no credible documents such as a PACRA printout was produced in support of the allegations. They went further to allege retrenchment of the workers and no document produced in support of the assertions. With the recent restructuring in the ongoing KCM liquidation process, the employees have been given new contracts which will certainly redeem the workers who were at the verge of being relegated to destitution. There are also some progress which has been recorded in the production and as of December, 2020, the mine was able to produce 33, 000 tonnes a month. This is why during President Edgar Lungu’s visit to Chingola and Chililabombwe, miners could not conceal their gratitutde for the evident political will to protect their jobs. MARVIN CHANDA BERI, Chingola.
IN my capacity as EAZ President, I have received a lot of queries as to whether it is justified that Zambian business can peg prices of goods and services in the US dollar. Well to begin with, the exchange rate definitely has an impact on pricing of goods that are imported. When the exchange rate moves against our currency, prices of imported goods will shift upwards. Unfortunately, businesses never adjust downwards prices when the Kwacha appreciates. There is also an increasing concern where most Zambian businesses have maliciously started pegging their prices in US dollars! Schools for example are writing to parents openly that because of the exchange rate, school fees will shift upwards. Now when you look at schools, they really do less purchases as most of their fixed costs are labour costs. There is just a malicious trend where schools are owned by foreigners and psychologically they dollar price school fees! Schools are maliciously increasing school fees and no one is coming to the aid of citizens! Schools are increasing fees but parents’ salaries remain unchanged. Teachers’ salaries also remain stable! This trend should be clearly monitored by relevant authorities. Some schools are increasing fees by more than K3, 000 as if Albert Einstein is charging for his knowledge! The other culprits are landlords for offices, shops and houses. It is immoral to adjust upwards rentals without considering the burden on those that are renting!
When I look at prices of goods produced and sold by Zambian businesses, they have remained stable over the years! Farmers have been receiving the same price for their beef and milk over the years but retailers have increased their prices by 100 percent citing exchange rate? Who is cheating who here? We We are killing businesses and defeating the purpose of forming legal entities as most business people decide to close shop and move to the informal sector! It is ok to adjust prices of exchange rate sensitive goods but the whole thing has been blown out of this world by merchants wanting to make a kill! In Turkey, after the fall of their currency, prices of goods and services remained the same and now tourists are flocking into the country because it has become cheap. In Zambia to the contrary since most businesses are foreign owned, merchants continue keeping prices very high! How possible is it that cement prices can move from K80 to K120 for all cement brands? What is
imported in the production of cement? Have employees’ salaries been increased? Why are we sleeping when our economy continues to be broken down into pieces? When you go into Congo, over 60 percent of what they consume in Katanga is ours. Where is that forex going to? When I look at prices of goods produced and sold by Zambian businesses, they have remained stable over the years! Farmers have been receiving the same price for their beef and milk over the years but retailers have increased their prices by 100 percent citing exchange rate? Who is cheating who here? We definitely can’t impose price controls but we can punish businesses for
price fixing! Yes, when the exchange rate deteriorates, you can adjust the pricing based on the increased costs but not use the situation to make more profits! Just like mines, when copper prices increase, these capitalists also declare increased production costs so that they pay less taxes! Zambia sure are we that dull? Ministry of General Education, Consumer Protection and Competition Commission, Bank of Zambia and other relevant authorities should study trends in pricing by various businesses! Otherwise we shall kill the middle class very soon and Zambia will only remain with a high class and low class! LUBINDA HAABAZOKA.

THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has distributed 1,200 bags of mealie meal to vulnerable members of the community in Chililabombwe district. Chililabombwe District Commissioner (DC) Roy Ngosa reiterated Government’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of vulnerable members of the community among them the elderly. He was speaking when he flagged off the distribution exercise. Mr Ngosa said members of the community were being sensitized to avert disasters such as floods by moving away from flood prone areas as the rainy season progresses. Government, he said, would continue to assist the vulnerable households as their economic hardships had been compounded by the negative effects of COVID-19) which was currently in its second wave. And Mother Angela Community School
representative Sister Victoria Mwaba said the donation would go a long way in aiding the school’s feeding programme. Sister Mwaba said the school, which is run by the Catholic Sisters, feeds over 300 children on a daily basis thus the donation of mealie meal will lighten the burden of fending for the vulnerable children. Meanwhile an elderly beneficiary Henry Chikwanza urged Government to continue supporting the vulnerable members of the community as they struggled to fend for themselves due to various factors among them old age. The beneficiaries, who were identified by the District Disaster Management committee included flood victims, former miners, church based organizations that take care of orphans and vulnerable children, widows and widowers as well as orphanages. - ZANIS
Illegal waste disposal rife in Kitwe By SANFROSSA MANYINDA THE Kitwe City Council will start prosecuting persons engaged in unauthorised solid waste disposal. The council has observed with dismay a growing tendency of indiscriminate disposal of solid waste in public places, a situation that was posing a danger to health. Council Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba said members of the public were obligated to practice safe disposal of solid waste by subscribing to council approved solid waste management enterprises and substructures. “There are laws that prohibit indiscriminate disposal of waste but some members of the public
are breaking these very laws. “Keeping a dirty environment during the rainy season is dangerous because of the easy atmosphere that it creates of breeding diseases,” she said. Ms Mwamba therefore stressed the need for members of the public to participate actively in ‘The Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign’ exercise that was done every last Saturday of the month. She urged members of the public to avoid littering and report to the council all matters involving illegal dumping of solid waste. Ms Mwamba maintained that effective next week, the council would start prosecuting persons found wanting.
Members of the public should avoid littering and report to the council all matters involving illegal dumping of solid waste.

By DR MWELWA MULENGA COLONIALISM in Zambia was a political tool deployed by the British to extract economic value out of our land. The value extracted out of Zambia in particular and Africa in general financed the development of Western Europe and through the slave trade contributed to the development of the southeastern United States of America. Walter Rodney (1973, How Europe under-developed Africa) has eloquently dealt with the dynamics of how Europe underdeveloped Africa through resource extraction as part of the framework of colonialism. After losing control of their colonies, the colonial empires begun a slow decline in both political influence and economic power. For example, the Britain of a hundred years ago or even sixty years ago is perceptively a far stronger (politically and economically) Britain than today’s. At the stroke of the midnight hour on October 24, 1964, Zambia became independent and British political power begun to fade immediately. Even though Britain left the political centre stage, it left us the government systems that are still with us today and impact how well we live our lives. One of those systems is the economic system. Post-colonial economic

Today Zambia, by consuming imported products, has become an engine of job creation not in Zambia but in the countries where those products are made. development has not been much to write home about, at least in the first 50 years of independent Zambia. Even though our colonisers have been long gone, we still look for them to come back to invest in our country so that our standards of living can improve. The constant search for
and consequent coming in of foreign investors has left the country exposed to exploitation by national governments and private corporations often supported by home governments. But the development of Zambia must be done by Zambians if Zambians have to

maintain control of the country, otherwise we risk becoming colonised by corporations and other governments. To develop our country, we must solve our foreign exchange problem by addressing two fundamental perennial problems that have plagued the nation from independence. Solving these problems will solve, at least in a considerable way, the unemployment problem in the country. The first is the people’s propensity to consume high value foreign luxury products. The second is the low level of investment by Zambians into production of goods and services for both local consumption and for export. Because the people love foreign luxury products, the country spends a lot of foreign exchange to import them. And because we do not make products we need and like in our country, the country must import them, thereby using more foreign exchange. These problems will not go away on their own. The country through its elected and appointed leadership, must deliberately decide to shift our economic paradigm and reorient the economy strategically towards manufacturing in Zambia those goods we import from other countries. Today Zambia, by consuming imported products, has become an engine of job creation not in Zambia but in the countries where those products are made. By making them in Zambia the
products we love to consume, and owning the factories manufacturing those goods, we will solve, to a large extent, the foreign exchange problem and at the same time create jobs for our citizens. Using this logic, President Lungu’s speech opening the fifth session of the national assembly as well as his speech launching PRESIDENT LUNGU’S SPEECH
Using this logic, President Lungu’s speech opening the fifth session of the national assembly as well as his speech launching the 2020-2023 Economic Recovery Programme are both serious indications of his administration’s understanding that entrepreneurship is the gateway determinant of development in Zambia. the 2020-2023 Economic Recovery Programme are both serious indications of his administration’s understanding that entrepreneurship is the gateway determinant of development in Zambia. FIGHT CORONAVIRUS:
The frugality and care in the use of foreign exchange will decide, in a major way, the extent to which Zambia develops.
develops. The complexity of foreign and domestic actors and their actions require diligent and qualified monitors backed by sound law, regulations, statues, and diligent enforcement. For example, Zambia must go to the mountain top to reflect and debate within itself, whether foreign investment has yielded the benefits the country expected, or whether to take a different direction, and how far to go in that direction. For example, consider a foreign company that came into Zambia 25 years ago during the privatisation programme and bought a dead national chain of stores for US$1 million. If this chain, which only sales merchandise from its home country, has been externalising $5million every year to its home country, over the time of its presence in Zambia it has externalised $125 million. If there are 200 of these companies, then Zambia will be sending $2 billion every year to the home countries of these companies. (The actual figure is $2.4billion per year). In essence Zambia has no manufacturing or production jobs in its domestic market because it has created them in the home country of these companies. It is debatable whether this company and others should be forced to buy their merchandise from Zambian suppliers because of quality differences and unreliable supplier commitments. In addition, while Zambians, since pre-independence days, have had a large appetite for foreign luxury goods, and like to indulge in pretended affluence, it is time to modify these appetites and be content with goods manufactured and produced in our domestic market. The idea is to insist on international quality standards so that these locally produced goods could also be exported. This is one way our country can conserve foreign exchange for use on critical needs of the nation. The fluctuating exchange rate is simply a reflection of our own untamed appetites for foreign goods, and our lack of vigilance over who accesses our market and our assets. (To be continued tomorrow)

CHIEF CHIPEPO WARNS VIOLENT POLITICIANS By OLIVER SAMBOKO
O
NLY peaceful and issue based campaigns will be allowed in my chiefdom ahead of this year’s General Election, Chief Chipepo of Southern Province has said. Chief Chipepo said politics should always be a competition of ideas between political players and not a platform for fanning violence and insults. He said Zambia was an oasis of peace and hence the need for the politicians to act responsibly and ensure that their supporters do not engage in violence. The traditional leader said any political party that would be promoting violence in the chiefdom would not allowed to carry out its activities. He said the people of Chipepo chiefdom were peaceful and as their traditional leader he was not going to allow politics to divide his subjects. “While all political parties are free to carry out their activities when time comes, those who will be found to be instigating political violence will be told to leave the chiefdom,” he said. He said it was sad that every time when there was an election in any part of the country, the campaigns were marred by skirmishes between Patriotic Front (PF) and the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND).
PF mourns Monze Catholic bishop By ANDREW MUKOMA
THE Patriotic Front (PF) in Southern Province is saddened by the death of Monze Catholic Bishop Moses Hamungole. Bishop Hamungole died at the Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital where he succumbed to covid-19 after being admitted for three weeks. PF Southern province Information and Publicity Secretary, Trymore Mweenda, said that Bishop Hamungole’s death has come with a deep sense of shock and sadness. Mr Mweenda said that Bishop Hamungole served the country diligently in different postings where he was assigned in doing the work of God. This is contained in a statement made available to the Daily Nation in Livingstone yesterday. "His work in Monze was exceptional where he was sherparding the flock and working with government. "We urge our people in the Province to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines so that we can preserve lives, we have no doubt Bishop Hamungole contracted the virus in the course of his work as a Bishop which he passionately executed," he assumed. Two weeks ago, Bishop Hamungole announced to the Catholic faithful that he tested positive to Covid-19 and was under treatment.

Ugandan presidency up for grabs
K
AMPALA - Ugandans began voting in a tense election yesterday under heavy security and an internet blackout as veteran leader Yoweri Museveni pursues a sixth term against a former pop star half his age. The internet went down on the eve of the vote, with some parts of the country reporting complete disruptions or significant slowdowns, after one of the most violent campaigns in years. Museveni is seeking a sixth term in office, having ruled for almost four decades, against singer-turned-MP Bobi Wine, 38, whose popularity among a youthful population has rattled the former rebel leader. Some 18 million voters are registered for the presidential and parliamentary vote, and results are expected by tomorrow. Museveni has ruled Uganda without pause since seizing control in 1986, when he helped to end years of tyranny under Idi Amin. – AFP.
Zim arrests 10, 000 for not wearing face masks HARARE - Police in Zimbabwe have arrested 10, 000 people over the last week for failing to wear face masks in public and 16, 000 others for flouting lockdown restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus, the authorities say. Most of the offenders were ordered to pay an admission of guilt fine, the privately owned NewZimbvbawe.com website reported. A hard lockdown came into force on January 5 after cases doubled last month because of festive season gatherings and traffic from neighbouring South Africa, which is experiencing a severe second wave of the virus. The highest number of daily deaths from coronavirus - 38 were recorded on Wednesday. Currently more than 9,000 people have Covid-19. – BBC.

Trump impeached second time WASHINGTON - Donald Trump faces trial in the Senate after becoming the first US president to be charged with misconduct in office for a second time. Trump is accused of inciting a mob that stormed Congress last week after he repeated false claims of election fraud. Five people died. The trial will be held after the president leaves office next Wednesday. If Trump is convicted, senators could also vote to bar him from ever holding public office again. The trial follows Wednesday's vote in the House of Representatives that formally charged - or impeached - the president with "incitement of insurrection" for his role in the riot. The Republican president has rejected responsibility for the violence. In a video released by the White House after the vote, he called on his supporters to remain peaceful, without mentioning his impeachment. – BBC.

Japoma stadium in Douala, “Micho” expressed disappointment that the Chipolopolo ended their preparatory matches with a draw but noted that the team was read for the CHAN. “Micho” is happy that his charges worked hard in the game against Libya and showed commitment to compete ahead of the tournament. “It was much better to go in the match against Tanzania on the wings of confidence by winning but with this result, as a coach I’m happy with the commitment dedication and hard work of the players,” said “Micho.”
“We look forward to go to Limbe City and prepare very well for the first game against Tanzania for the group matches.” Zambia who will compete in Group D at the CHAN alongside Guinea, Tanzania and Namibia will kick off their campaign at the CHAN with a tie against Tanzania on Tuesday. And despite having played four friendly matches against Niger, Uganda, Cameroon and Libya, “Micho” said he will use the remaining few days to identify players who will be able to start and those who will come in as substitutes when Zambia plays Tanzania.
‘Mama Judo’ Matilda Mwaba put to rest By MICHAEL MIYOBA
VETERAN sports administrator Matilda Mwaba who was yesterday put to rest at Lusaka’s memorial Park has been described as a mother who mentored a lot of young people especially women to participate in sports. Mwaba, who was put to rest just a few meters from the grave of the late veteran football commentator Dennis Liwewe died on Monday evening after an illness at Levy Mwanwasa Hospital in Lusaka. Speaking during the burial which was attended by a handful of people due to Covid-19 pandemic, her daughter, Matilda, described her as a mother of children both in sports and outside sports. Meanwhile, National Organisation for Women in Sport Physical Activity and Recreation (NOWSPAR) chairperson Katongo Monga hailed Mwaba who was NOWSPAR’s CEO at the time of her dearth for being a great mentor to members.
