Opening churches not mandatory - State House

By AARON CHIYANZO
Pastor Sydney Mwandu
CHURCHES are free to decide whether to open or not because President Edgar Lungu’s guidance is not mandatory, State House has clarified. Special assistant to the President for press and public relations, Isaac Chipampe said President Lungu’s pronouncement on churches opening should not be mistaken for a directive for all churches to open. ILLEGAL GOLD MINING IT is quite mind boggling that at a time when the nation should be told how proper mining is being carried out in the newly discovered gold mining areas, we still read of illegal miners being arrested. Over the past year, we have read of foreigners from Angola but even as far away as Tanzania invading gold fields in Mwinilunga, even supplanting locals in digging up the gold. A question we asked as a newspaper since February is how is it that a few months after the reported discovery of gold findings in some parts of the country, foreigners are still the ones dominating the exploitation of the precious mineral – though illegally. We would have thought that Government by now would have ensured that illegal immigrants reported to have invaded these gold fields are flushed out and the sites secured. From what we know, Government even sent in security personnel to ensure that the gold fields were properly secured so that proper mining under ZCCM-IH could start through artisan miners. Yet, while ZCCM-IH is procrastinating or doing some groundwork, there are reports of several illegal miners being arrested for stealing what belongs to Zambians. North-Western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu yesterday revealed that several illegal miners who invaded Kasenseli gold sites in Mwinilunga have been apprehended, According to Mr Mubukwanu, the illegal miners were arrested after security wings conducted patrols at the gold sites in Mwinilungalast week. By now, we would have thought that the area would have been cleaned of illegal miners given that the government has deployed security wings. What could be the problem? Do the security wings mean to tell the nation that they have been outwitted by the illegal miners? It appears that the illegal miners recognise the value of the gold more than ZCCM-IH hence their preparedness to risk their lives to get at the gold. But Government for its part has demonstrated that it wants the gold to be properly mined, hence the introduction of security personnel in the area. Moreover, this was even more exemplified by President Edgar Lungu himself last week when he removed Mr Hudson Namachila as North-Western Province Commissioner of Police for having failed to secure the gold fields. As Mr Mubukwanu noted, gold had been identified as a strategic reserve and, therefore, there was need to ensure it was mined in a well-structured manner. “From the time gold was discovered a number of illegal activities have been taking place and to make it worse new gold sites have been discovered in the area and now we have seen an influx of people now flooding the areas. “We don’t know yet whether they are foreign nationals or they our local people but it is very sad the way the areas are being invaded by an influx of people to illegally exploit the resource. Our stand is we have always said is that Government must as a first step ensure that it forms a taskforce that will go around the country organising the youth and offer them basic training in simple mining. The Zambia National Service we have suggested is one such wing the government can use because it is represented throughout the country and has been involved in skills training for young people. By encouraging the formation of cooperatives, Government would ensure there is organised mining and provide employment for the youth. Government must help the youth source gold panning equipment instead of leaving them with simple hoes and pickaxes? Early this year, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Richard Musukwa said the government would provide gold panning equipment to the gold panning communities and cooperatives. In addition, Mineral Development Permanent Secretary Barnaby Mulenga reported that Cabinet had approved plans to relax requirements in the mining sector to allow locals to fully participate in the mining of gold as a first step first. Surely, by now we should not be chasing after illegal miners but seeing organised mining activities taking place.

SERVING WITH INTEGRITY
THE END OF THE OPPOSITION ALLIANCE By ANTONIO MWANZA THE so-called Opposition Alliance of UPND and others has crumbled as NAREP becomes the latest casualty to leave the alliance. First it was Sean Tembo and his PeP who left the alliance, then Andyford Banda and his PAC quickly followed suit. Both cited lack of leadership, lack of honesty and a lack of a clear, agreed common agenda, bitterness and infighting within the alliance as some of the reasons why they decided to abandon the Opposition Alliance. Since independence, Zambia has had numerous political alliances and all of them have ended up in one way: failure. In 2006, UPND, FDD and UNIP formed a political alliance called United Democratic Alliance, (UDA) with the view of fielding one single candidate to defeat the MMD in the general elections. A bitter fight over who should lead the alliance quickly ensued and by the time UDA was settling for Mr Hakainde Sammy Hichilema as its leader, the alliance was dead in reality and only alive on paper. The UDA lost lamentably, coming a distant third in the elections. Again, in 2011, the alliance between UPND and PF crumbled in a spectacular fashion; the two parties could not agree on who should lead the alliance. The leadership question was only but the tip of the iceberg. There were deep fundamental irreconcilable differences between the two parties. Political alliances in Zambia have failed and continue to fail for a number of reasons which among others include the following: 1. Greed and selfishness: many of these opposition politicians join or pursue political alliances out of selfish reasons to use their fellows to achieve their narrow and personal goal of going to State House; they want to ride on others to get the numbers to win elections. 2. Lack of honest and genuine reasons: most political alliances are based on nothing genuine or politically and economically fundamental other than the desperate attempt to come together with a sole purpose of removing a ruling party from power. There are no fundamental political or economic policy commonality or shift driving the agenda. The alliance members never even have common social, political or economic policies that they intend to pursue other than their insatiable appetite for power. How can you have a meaningful and genuine alliance when your
party manifestos and ideologies don’t agree? Scripture tells us that unless they agree, two cannot move together. 3. Dishonesty and suspicion: most of these politicians in alliances are never honest with each other; they rarely say the truth about why they are in the alliance, they often pretend like they are there for the common good and interest of the country when in actual sense they are in the alliance to advance their narrow and often selfish agendas at the expense of their colleagues. Secondly, these folks often hold deep-rooted suspicions amongst themselves. This suspicion is rooted in the bitterness and animosity that resulted from the failure of previous alliances where they felt used or betrayed by their alliance members. 4. Failure to agree on who should lead the alliance and how to share power: The question of who should lead an alliance and how power must be shared in the event that the alliance forms government has often been the major cause of the breakup of political alliances in Zambia. This issue has often led to bitter infighting and acrimonious rivalry amongst alliance partners, destroying the very unity the alliance needs in order to survive. 5. Lack of unity of purpose: there is no unity of purpose among these alliance members other than a goal to remove the other guys from power. A political alliance must be built on something bigger and fundamental other than the motive to remove a seating government from power. Forming an alliance purely for the purpose of removing a seating government is a recipe for disaster and can never sustain an alliance. For any political alliance to work, people must agree on the fundamental policy matters they want to pursue, they must harmonise their differing manifestos and ideologies. Just like UNZA lecturer, Professor Bizeck Phiri had warned that unless the general membership of all the political parties in the Oppositions Alliance, together with the top leadership, were committed to key objectives, it would crumble. Equally, political scientist Dr Alex Ng’oma had urged the Opposition Alliance to start offering credible checks and balances to the PF government and show Zambian voters what they would do differently from the current administration other than the usual malice, lies and propaganda. Commenting on the Opposition Alliance, Prof Phiri wondered how the general organisation of the alliance was; what the objectives were and how individual political parties would be
organised and function concurrently. He also questioned how many of the 10 political parties in the alliance had representation on the ground and key government institutions such as Parliament and Councils which are critical platforms for mass mobilisation and real policy discourse. “To start with; is that alliance just between leaders themselves or does the alliance trickle-down to the membership of those 10 political parties? Are their party members in agreement with what their leaders are doing? Because that’s where the strength of an alliance comes in,” Professor Phiri, a political historian, wondered. “In the past, alliances failed because leaders themselves did not agree on who to field as a presidential candidate for the alliance, among the 10, are they in agreement? Because to say we have formed an alliance is another thing, but each one of you quietly think: ‘I hope it is me they will choose to be a presidential candidate’; that has been a weakness of past alliances,” Prof Phiri observed. And Dr. Ng’oma had urged the Opposition Alliance to start offering credible checks and balances to the PF government and show Zambian voters what they would do differently from the current administration which they have clearly failed. “What we need to hear, for example, from the current alliance, is what is it that you are going to do differently from what PF is doing. What is it that the alliance is going to do better than what PF is doing? These are the things we need to know and that should be the purpose of the alliance,” Dr. Ng’oma had advised. He noted that opposition alliances in Zambia have failed to fulfil their purpose of offering credible checks and balances on the Executive because they had historically been formed for the sole purpose of removing an incumbent party from office. “In Zambia, what happens is that alliances are formed only to fight the government of the day, only to see how best to remove the party in government without offering any credible alternative whatsoever. There will be in-fighting among all the people involved; each one of them wanting to be president and that’s how the whole thing will crumble,” Dr. Ng’oma had cautioned. Just like the two learned political experts had explained, the so-called Opposition Alliance has continued to disintegrate. At the rate things are going, by election time there will be no alliance whatsoever to talk about.

Security invasion captures miners By SILUMESI MALUMO
A SECURITY invasion of the Kasenseli gold area has uncovered extensive gold mimes whose operators have now been arrested. Northwestern Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has revealed that several illegal miners who invaded Kasenseli gold sites in Mwinilunga have been apprehended, Mr Mubukwanu said the illegal miners were arrested after the security wings conducted patrols at the gold sites in Mwinilunga district last week. He said in an interview yesterday, that after yesterday’s patrols by the security wings, no new arrests were made. Mr Mubukwanu said Government would not rest until all those involved in illicit gold mining activities were arrested. He said the security wings would ensure patrols were conducted on daily basis so that illegal miners who had flooded the area were completely flushed out. Mr Mubukwanu said gold had been identified as a strategic reserve and,
therefore, there was need to ensure it was mined in a well-structured manner. He said government would not allow illicit activities to go on in the area because this would hinder the nation from benefiting from the resource. “But as government we are putting in place measures to ensure the resource is protected and safeguarded until the ZCCM-IH takes over full operations,” he said. The minister assured that security had been tighten to ensure illegal miners were flushed out to pave way for ZCCM-IH to take over the mining activities so that Zambians can benefit from the gold.
Catholics won’t resume liturgical celebrations By AARON CHIYANZO
THE Catholic Church has announced that the suspension of all public church gatherings and communal liturgical celebrations will remain in effect until further notice. Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops Rev Lungu (ZCCB) president Reverend George Lungu said the church was desirous to protect the lives and health of its members and pastoral agents. Rev Lungu said the decision was reached after a thorough process of consultation within the church circles and in liaison with relevant stakeholders in the health sector. “The church was desirous to protect the lives and health of its members and pastoral agents. Allow me then to religiously and judiciously follow the basic rules of hygiene, especially those of washing hands with soap regularly and thoroughly, avoiding contact and observing social distancing among others,” he said. Rev Lungu also called on Government to prioritise the safety of health workers in the forefront fighting Covid-19. He also called for more donations from individuals and institutions towards the Covid-19 fight. “We also call on Catholics to continue praying from the safety of their homes, the domestic church. Not only that, continue to follow spiritual programmes on radio, television and other media platforms,” said Rev Lungu. And Bread of Life has only allowed its churches outside Lusaka where there were no Covid-19 cases recorded to start congregating. Presiding Bishop, Joe Imakando thanked President Edgar Lungu for announcing that churches could meet under strict health guidelines. “Our main church is at the epicenter were Covid-19 cases have occurred. We need to adequately prepare. Our churches outside Lusaka where there are no Covid-19 cases recorded can start congregating,” he said.

Joe Malanji delivered the blankets at the hospital on behalf of President Lungu Mr Malanji said the President decided to give out the 1000 blankets to the hospital to help the institution especially that winter was approaching “I have come to deliver the 1000 blankets which have been donated by President Edgar Lungu. I’m just a messenger who has been sent by the republican President,” Mr Malanji said And in receiving the blankets, Kitwe Teaching Hospital senior medical superintendent Abidan Chansa thanked the President for his gesture saying it would greatly help the hospital. Dr Chansa said the hospital had the bed space of 380 and so it meant that the hospital would be able to change blankets three times a day. “The President has shown that he cares” about this hospital which is one of the biggest referral hospitals. We are grateful for this gesture,” Dr Chansa said

He said, “We gave them our terms and our position and that is what we are working on right now and the power is going to the mines. to meet us and negotiate on the new agreement,” Mr Nkhuwa sais. Mr Nkhuwa said the challenge which had led to the disagreement was the price at which power would be sold. He said that Zesco produces power and it cannot supply at a cheaper price when CEC would sell at exorbitant price to the mines and other customers on the Copperbelt. Mr Nkhuwa said Zesco would only supply power to CEC at a rate that was reasonable.

FIVE Covid-19 patients in Zambia have recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours and have been discharged from isolation, Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya has said. Dr Chilufya also said 9, 980 people from high risk countries were had been subjected to the 14 days quarantined but that 2912 had been cleared after meeting the requirements. And Dr Chilufya clarified that churches still needed to get certification from health authorities before open their doors to congregants. He explained that the Presidential relief for churches to open amid the Covid-19 was still subject to public health guidelines. Dr Chilufya said health authorities needed to check that hygiene and safety measures were put in place before opening.

‘Emeralds answer to Zambia’s debt problem’ By SANDRA MACHIMA
ZAMBIA needs two kilogrammes of its finest emeralds to pay its US$750, 000 eurobond that is maturing in 2022, says United for Prosperous and peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) president Charles Chanda. Mr Chanda said it was unacceptable for Zambia to continue suffering with debt when she had the finest emeralds and other resources in the world to repay the debts. He said the nation was now at a stage where citizens needed to enjoy the benefit of their natural resources especially now amid global covid-19 pandemic. He stated that only 2kg of the emeralds could turn the country’s fortune around and enable it repay the eurobond as the nation implements austerity measures to avoid a debt crisis. Mr Chanda said Zambia was among countries with the best emeralds in the whole world yet foreign investors were the ones benefiting the most while Zambia continued struggling to repay its debt. “It’s unfortunate that trade is dominated by foreign investors who together with their countries of origin benefit at the expense of the owners, especially with the unattractive mining policy of auctioning emeralds, “ he said. “Fine emeralds will fetch about $95 500 per carat and since we have 5000 carats in one kg of emerald, this means we can get $477 500 000 from one kg. Therefore two kg of such high grade emerald will give us $955 000, 000,” he stated. He said the excess of the money could also be channelled to other deserving sectors such as education, which he described as a cornerstone for any developing country like Zambia. It was high time the government supported local citizens if the dream of not leaving anyone behind as stated in an agenda for 2030 sustainable development plan was to be achieved
SMEs urged to use Covid-19 bailout prudently By SILUMESI MALUMO
SMALL Medium Entrepreneurs must use the funds which will be disbursed by government through the Covid-19 recovery fund prudently in order to help in stimulating the economy, the Patriotic Front has said. Ms Kapona said that the sector was critical to the country’s economic growth and it was prudent that they utilised the funds in an appropriate manner. She said in an interview yesterday, the government was eager to ensure that the sector survived because it was a contributor to the country’s
MINISTER ASSURES OF EASED BORROWING RATES
By SILUMESI MALUMO AND TAWANDA MUNYUKI
BUSINESSES could be destroyed beyond repair during the COVID 19 outbreak and necessary measures are needed to the sub sector to survive, Minister of Finance Bwalya Ng’andu has said. The minister also assured that Government would ensure it eases the rate of borrowing following the K10 billion injected by the Bank of Zambia to commercial banks to cushion the impact of the Corona virus on smallmedium enterprises. This in the wake of concerns that commercial banks might be tempted to offer predatory rates to desperate businesses accessing the facility. And Dr Ng’andu said President Edgar Lungu had directed for the Covid-19 recovery fund to help the SMEs which had been seriously affected. He said during a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday, government wanted to protect the sub sector from total collapse. The minister said it was prudent that the sub sector which was critical to the country’s economy was safeguarded by providing funds. He said providing a stimulate package for the SMEs would enable the sub sector to thrive and contribute to the country’s economic growth. Dr Ng’andu also said this would help the government to continue getting
Dr Ng’andu revenue through taxes. Dr Ng’andu said if the sectors which were critical and collapsed, that would mean the revenue collection would be shuttered. So what it means is that if we have critical areas where government get revenue which are down then we shall not perform,” he said. He said it was prudent to reflect and find ways that would help to sustain the country’s economy during this critical period. Dr Ng’andu said it was government’s desire to ensure that the businesses stand firm and not varnish during this period.

The PF Central Province deputy chief, said the onus was now on the SMEs to ensure that their businesses grew v despite the deadly pandemic which had engulfed the country. “It was exciting that the President thought about his children during this difficult period because their businesses were seriously in disarray. For him to call for the Covid-19 recovery fund that shows that he really cares for his children. Our President does not want to see anyone to suffer even if we are going through this difficult period. He has really showed leadership, this is how a leader should do for his people who are in serious challenges,” she said. Ms Kapona said SMEs must be honest enough in order to put the funds to good use so that they can set the agenda to grow the economy. THE Ministry of Tourism and Arts through the National Arts Council is planning to organise music and arts festival to help revive the business of artists after the Covid-19 outbreak. Tourism and Arts Minister, Ronald Chitotela said President Edgar Lungu was in full support and ready to grace the event dubbed Presidential Coral Thanksgiving Festive. Mr Chitotela said the event which would be held at Heroes Stadium or Levy Mwanawasa Stadium was aimed at helping artists heal from the financial pressure caused by the economic down turn due to Covid-19. He said this during a meeting with the representatives of NAC and some selected artists among them Njoya Tembo, popularly known as Njoya T and Freddie Phiri, a film maker. “The ministry wants to come up with the Presidential Coral Thanks Giving Festival, the President is in full support of this,” he

But the minister said there was need to adhere to measures which had been put in place by Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of the pandemic as companies continue to run their businesses. “We don’t need to be reckless the time we shall be conducting our businesses because the pandemic will spread in the country beyond what we expected,” he said. The Bank of Zambia had announced that it has established a Targeted Medium-Term Refinancing Facility with an initial amount of K10 billion to provide medium term liquidity in light of the Covid-19 outbreak. Bank of Zambia Governor Denny Kalyalya said the K10 billion is part of a comprehensive list of measures that the central bank was taking to respond to the Covid-19 crisis. Dr Kalyalya said although the full impact of the Covid-19 shock on public health and the economy cannot be determined at the moment, indications are that it will be unprecedented. And Dr Ng’andu said that government is considering putting the interest rate above the current monetary policy rate which stands at 11.50 percent. ‘’We want to make it easy for the borrowers so we are putting it slightly above the current monetary policy rate’’, he said. And Dr. Ng’andu has explained that the K10 billion facilities will be available at concession basis.
said. Mr Chitotela said the event would start from the district, province and culminate into a national extravaganza that would bring together various forms of artists. He said the event would also help upcoming artists to have access to studio and recording time. “We will identify one or three or five talents per province and help promote them,” said Mr Chitotela. And NAC board member, Rodgers Mwewa said the event would give chance to the Zambian people through the artists to give thanks to the Lord for allowing life after the Covid-19. He said NAC would make the best out of the initiative through the arts to bring the country together and thank God for healing the world and Zambia in particular. And Njoya -T said the event would bring together musicians and see how best they could add value to their works opposed to the current situation were they are badly hit by advent technology and almost giving out their music for free. Meanwhile, Mr Chitotela has asked the leadership at Mushota Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kawambwa to split worship hours into two sessions in line with Covid 19 prevention. Speaking yesterday when the congregated with the members of the church who turned up in numbers after weeks of a break following the outbreak of the Covid 19, the parliamentarian said this would work for members to maintain social distancing in the face of the coronavirus.

Going to church is a choice
Dr. Kaunda
Dear Editor, WE freely decide whether or not to meet. We always have and always will. Some people do not need Covid-19 to miss church; some have just realised how much they have been missing. Let each one exercise their faith as they dim fit. We have been going to malls, markets and even hospitals the last four weeks. The same God that covered us there will watch over us as we worship Him. And if not, let it be known that we would rather give up our last breath serving Him than turn our homes into prisons. Of course we will observe the rules and its best to leave the children out of this but as for me, I will be in church on Sunday and on any other day that the opportunity to worship God with the saints is accorded me! I owe God my very life! God saved me as a 1.9kg premature baby with little hope of survival. He saved me from near death experiences in the recent past, He has freed me from the grip of fear. And He is still alive. MWAPE CHOOLWE.
KK’s 96th birthday celebrations suspended Dear Editor, THE family and office of first Republican President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda has suspended his 96th birthday celebrations. This follows the directive given by President Edgar Lungu and the World Health Organisation (WHO) on social distancing due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 globally. Friends, institutions, and the general public wishing to present some gifts to Dr. Kaunda on his birthday are requested to leave the gifts at the entrance of his residence in the State Lodge area or at the Office of the First President in Kabulonga in Lusaka. And Dr. Kaunda has urged all Zambians to adhere to the measures put in place by the government to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 by observing social distancing, washing hands with soap, staying home as well as wearing masks when in public places. Dr Kaunda’s birthday falls on April 28. RODRICK NGOLO, Administrative Assistant at the Office of the First President.
Is it right to have churches open?
Dear Editor, IN the first place, it’s worth noting that churches were not closed in the first place, the various churches decided to do so for the protection of the members It would be a good idea if churches around the country were allowed to proceed with congregating except those in Lusaka, Kabwe Kafue and Chingola. That way we could be safe. MAILESI BANDA.

OPINION
HH GETS A 48-HOUR ULTIMATUM AS A SHOW DOWN LOOMS IN WESTERN PROVINCE THE wave of resignations in the United Party for National Development (UPND) and the subsequent loss of by-elections leading to the dissolution of the provincial executive committee has opened a bleeding wound that might just prove fatal for the opposition party in Western Province. A few days ago, the UPND dissolved the Musangu Jamba-led provincial executive committee, accusing them of having failed to hold the party together as evidenced by the massive exodus of some of the party faithful’s to the ruling Patriotic Front. Following a spate of resignations of notably ward councillors in Mongu, Lukulu, Limulunga and Kaoma among other districts, the party’s top leadership has found itself in a frenzy for solutions on how to hold together its crumbling membership in what was once upon a time its stronghold. This led to the installation of an interim committee to lead the party in the province. The interim committee headed by among the notables Sesheke Member of Parliament Romeo Kan’gombe and his Senanga counterpart. However, this has not gone well with the former executive who held a press briefing on April 24, 2020 in Mongu at which they issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the party’s leadership daring the leadership to rescind the dissolution failure to which they will destroy the party. The group which was headed by Mbangu Mbangu, the former youth chairperson who has been replaced by Mr Kan’gombe lamented that he fought battles for the UPND almost costing him his life and it was very disappointing that he would be trashed so disrespectfully. In a recording posted on Barotse
watchdog, Mr. Mbangu stated that despite repeated promises by the party president, Mr Hakainde Hichilema to rescind the decision, nothing has been done. Patriotic Front provincial chairperson Mr. Kufuka Kufuka stated that the UPND in Western Province does not need help in destroying itself. It’s clear that people have finally come to see that the ruling Patriotic Front is a party to reckon with. If a party cannot respect the sacrifices made by its members then no one in their rightful state of mind should take a risk of trusting it. He added that loyalty makes a politician. A politician who is not loyal to his leadership team cannot be trusted to deliver on his promises to anyone let alone a country.
As much as I may humanly sympathise with them for having been treated like rubbish by Hakainde, I am jubilant that the people of Western Province are now able to see through the kind of person they almost supported. Mr. Glenn Kalimbwe, who is party mobilisation coordinator for the Patriotic Front stated that the party’s mobilisation strategies has since paid off as can be seen from the infighting in the opposition. They are blaming themselves for their dwindling membership at this crucial time when they should have been consolidating as you know that we have a general election just months from now he remarked scornfully. Our task in Western Province is simple, it’s just to point to the people at the inconsistencies of the UPND and their leader HH who changed vice presidents more than anyone dead or alive since Zambia became a Republic. Mr. Kalimbwe made an invitation to the discredited members of the UPND stating that the boat is still loading and there is enough room for everyone. Let them come, we shall welcome them as brothers and sisters the bad experiences they have accumulated from working with Hakainde Hichilema is a valuable testimony that Zambian people desperately need to hear for them to know that HH is a businessman without a conscience. Once he has made profit from you, you’re finished and forgotten just like a commodity out of fashion concluded the mobilisation coordinator. For now we can only watch as seconds of the ticking clock fade into minutes then hours culminating into the 48th hour after which the drama will unfold.

Pro poor covid preventive measures fair
Dear Editor, PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has always restrained in invoking his sweeping Executive powers. While it was fashionable for other Presidents to flex their presidential muscle and issue decrees which paralysed the people’s liberty to go about their businesses, President Lungu has always balanced the competing and coexisting interests. Even in the face of the greatest storm, the measures that the government has put in place have been user friendly and peopled-centred. The Covid-19 has been President Lungu’s greatest test for humanity. He has done his part and the people should do their part by strictly adhering to the health guidelines. The Covid-19 has been Zambia’s turning point to cease being dependent on foreign supplied goods and boost capacity to local businesses. The small businesses which were on the verge of collapse have been restored. Unlike the proposals by the UPND surrogates to dish out money to businesses, the measures that have been taken are more than a stimulus package. They are in their own way capable of making positive impact to save the businesses. We believe the measures that have been taken are from a well informed background. The government has done the risk analysis and the government has received resources both monetary and in kind and although not sufficient will equip the health institutions’ capacity to repelling the Coron virus. It is also a fact that the economy should not grind to a halt in the midst of this darkest hour. This has set a new tone toward the recovery process among the microeconomic players. We are also concerned that some cross section of society have opposed the opening of churches subject to adherence to the conditions which have been set. This antichrist behaviour by defacto UPND dominated alliance spokesperson James Lukuku is disappointing. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Youth Rights Activist, Lusaka.

Kagwe also announced that two patients have recovered, one of them a doctor, bringing the number of recoveries to 69. So far, 13, 872 people have been tested. ‘’Our capacity for testing will be expanded from our current 10 to cover at least one laboratory in each county. This is expected to take place in the next two weeks,” he added. – DAILY NATION, Kenya.

‘Irresponsible, dangerous’ …Experts trash Trump idea of injecting disinfectant to treat coronavirus PARIS - Experts on Friday dismissed as reckless and irresponsible US President Donald Trump’s suggestion of injecting disinfectant to treat patients with Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. “Is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside (the body)?” Trump asked at his daily briefing on Thursday, having said that disinfectant knocks out the virus “in a minute.” “Because, you see, it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs,” Trump continued, apparently referring to disinfectant. “So it would be interesting to check that out.” In interviews and on social networks, doctors and others dismissed Trump’s idea out-of-hand. “This notion of injecting or ingesting any type of cleansing product into the body is irresponsible, and it’s dangerous,” Vin Gupta, pulmonologist and global health expert told NBC News. “It’s a common method that people utilise when they want to kill themselves.” “We have already seen people mistakenly poisoning themselves by taking chloroquine when their hopes were raised by
unscientific comments,” noted Parastou Donyai, director of pharmacy practice and the University of Reading, referring to a malaria drug Trump has promoted as a treatment for Covid-19. Last month, an Arizona man died and his wife was put in critical condition after ingesting chloroquine phosphate, an additive used to clean fish tanks that is also found in the medicine promoted by the US president. Injecting a toxic substance “gives very little time to step in and reverse the injection of a poison,” Donyai warned. Walter Shaub, former director of the US Office of Government Ethics, said Trump’s daily briefings are doing more harm than good. “As a public service, please stop airing these coronavirus briefings, they are endangering lives,” he tweeted. “And please do not drink or inject disinfectant.” University of California professor and former secretary of labour Robert Reich agreed, tweeting that “Trump’s briefings are actively endangering the public’s health”. “Boycott this propaganda – Listen to the experts,” he added. – AFP.
Virus toll nears 200, 000 NEW YORK - The global coronavirus death toll approached 200, 000 yesterday as the United Nations launched an international push for a vaccine to defeat the pandemic. Governments around the world are struggling to limit the economic devastation unleashed by the virus, which has infected nearly 2.8 million people and left half of humanity under some form of lockdown. The scale of the pandemic has forced medical research on the virus to move at unprecedented speed, but effective treatments are still far away and the United Nations chief said the effort will require cooperation on a global scale. “We face a global public enemy like no other,” Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told a virtual briefing on Friday, asking for international organisations, world leaders and the private sector to join hands. “A world free of Covid-19 requires the most massive public health effort in history.” The vaccine should be safe, affordable and available to all, Guterres stressed at the meeting, which was also attended by the leaders of Germany and France.
But notably absent from the meeting were the leaders of China, where the virus first emerged late last year, and the United States, which has accused the UN’s World Health Organisation of not warning quickly enough about the original outbreak. The UN chief’s vaccine appeal came a day after US President Donald Trump
prompted outcry and ridicule with his suggestion that disinfectants be used to treat coronavirus patients. Meanwhile, the WHO has said there is “currently no evidence that people who have recovered from Covid-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection.”– DAILY NATION, Kenya/BBC.
DR Congo police arrest ‘prophet’
KINSHASA - Police in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday arrested Ne Muanda Nsemi, the leader of a separatist religious sect, killing eight of his followers as they raided his home in Kinshasa, the Interior minister said. The arrest of Nsemi, whose Bundu dia Kongo (BDK) group dreams of restoring the Kongo kingdom that thrived for centuries before the colonial era around the mouth of the Congo River, took place after clashes with police on Wednesday in a neighbouring
province, in which 14 BDK members died. A self-styled prophet and former member of Parliament, Nsemi has a strong following in western Congo and has been a thorn in the side of successive governments. He was arrested in March 2017 after leading deadly protests against former President Joseph Kabila, only to be broken out of prison by his supporters two months later. Police announced his arrest on Twitter in an operation on Friday, saying: “Mission accomplished, it’s done.” A Reuters witness said
Nsemi’s followers attempted to protect his house in the plush Ma Campagne neighbourhood by throwing palm nuts at police, who fired their weapons as they moved in. Nsemi is accused of rebellion, security offences and inciting ethnic hatred, Interior Minister Gilbert Kankonde said in a statement. “This arrest came after the failure of several negotiations to persuade the person concerned to voluntarily surrender,” Kankonde said. Security forces detained more than 350 of his followers,
35 of whom were injured. Eight police officers were seriously wounded in the operation, he said. After escaping from prison in May 2017, Nsemi spent two years on the run before reappearing at a news conference in Kinshasa last year, pledging to contribute to the development of the country. He has remained in Kinshasa for the past year, sometimes lashing out at President Felix Tshisekedi and others with xenophobic slurs that accuse them of having ties to Congo’s eastern neighbour Rwanda. – REUTERS.

…as FAZ introduces foreign player quotas for clubs My MICHAEL MIYOBA
T
HE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) says the number of foreign players in the Super Division will drastically reduce during the 2020/2021 soccer season. FAZ president Andrew Kamanga said the association had several meetings with Super Division clubs who agreed to the introduction of a quota for foreign players to be engaged by a club. Speaking when he featured on CBC TV, Kamanga reaffirmed FAZ’s commitment to
By MUKWIMA CHILALA THE issue of us being sponsored is neither here nor there because no one has sponsored us as we have only raised serious concerns against the club president Everisto Kabila and Chief Executive Officer Charles Chakatazya, says Nkana Fans chairman Emmanuel Zulu. But Kabila says that there is no mismanagement of finances at the club as the secretariat has qualified people that handles its accounts. As the tug of war continues between the fans and the club executive, Zulu said their
support the development of local players who are expected to play for the national team. “We have had a chat with the clubs, at some point we had a club which had almost only foreign players, we sat with clubs and decided that going forward we will start implementing the quota system. “Clubs had commitments with players so in terms of going forward you will see a drastic reduction especially from next season there will be very few foreign players in each team,” Kamanga said. Kamanga encouraged Super Division clubs to tap into lower leagues to help develop
upcoming players. He said FAZ is determined to invest in developmental leagues to get as many players as possible to become professional players. Meanwhile, Kamanga has also reaffirmed the associations’ commitment to develop women football. Kamanga said the association amended the FAZ constitution to give more women a chance to contribute to the development of football. He said though women football has recorded a so much improvement with the senior team qualifying for the Olympic Games, FAZ is in the process of introducing a
national league for the women who have been compelled to compete in provincial leagues which are active in four provinces only. “We recognise the importance of women and having women in the management of the game. “For the first time we are going to have 10 female representatives from the provinces as representatives as you know our league is active in four provinces but we are moving to add in more provinces so we have prioritised youth development in women football as a corner stone for the 10-year development plan,” Kamanga said.
State rules out football behind closed door By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA GOVERNMENT has objected to the idea of playing football games behind closed doors as it still puts the players and staff at risk of coronavirus. Sports Minister Emmanuel Mulenga at a briefing yesterday said football was a contact sport and an easy medium to spread the disease. “The President was very categorical when in his statement that only sporting activities which doesn’t involve contact between players can resume. Football behind closed door means no fans are allowed to watch but there is contact among players. “They are going to be fighting for one ball, which simply means among the players, there will be contact. “Going by that, we will not allow them to go ahead with that. If there are any such Mulenga
Nkana chiefs, fans at daggers drawn protest against the club administration was not sponsored by any element but by the passion that the supporters had for the club. Zulu said that the supporters were agitated by the mismanagement of player contract affairs that had seen FIFA banning the club from engaging in player transfers for two seasons. "For someone to say we are
sponsored is illogical and neither here nor there because what we have done is only raise three legitimate concerns against the president and his CEO and none of them has responded to our concerns," Zulu said. “The first concern we raised was about the banning of our team by FIFA from doing transfers for three years because we were found guilty of breaching contractual
obligations against our former goalkeeper Adams. “And secondly on Aaron Katebe's contract, we signed him and he did not even kick a ball at the club but let him go and failed to pay him K300, 000 and bailiffs pounced on the club. Then there is also the issue of Walter Bwalya,” said Zulu. Zulu said that the players’ mismanagement on the part
of the two club officials had cost Nkana a lot of money and hence the need to get rid of them. But Kabila denied any mismanagement on his part and said that three exco officials were bank approvers and that his role was just to send an email to approve a decision suggested or agreed by the executive committee. He said that Nkana FC was audited by a private company
thoughts, they will need certification from the ministry of Health,” Mulenga said. He emphasised that the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) may face suspension in line with the Sports Act as that would be abrogating the Statutory Instrument 21 and 22 which facilitates the management and control of Covid-19. “Any person who abrogates the Presidential directive will be sanctioned and within the Sports Council Act we have the powers to suspend someone from office for six years,” he said. In a circular to clubs, FAZ mentioned the possibility of finishing the season behind closed doors. However, President Lungu in his national address on Friday only allowed noncontact sport such as golf and tennis to resume activities. And Zambia Tennis Association president Wane Msiska warned that the association will not shield any of its member clubs who will abrogate the health guidelines. Msiska said only social tennis will resume while professional play remain suspended until further guidance.
and Mopani internal audit committee and reports were always sent. He said the latest audits by Mopani were done two months ago and that the club was commended for good work, and being the best amongst Mopani-sponsored clubs. He said fans wishing to check records can visit the secretariat at Nkana Stadium and see the accountant," Kabila said. Nkana have in the past season been engulfed by infighting between the club administration and fans which first stemmed from the technical bench and later player management.

SON DISAPPEARS WITH FATHER’S FUTURE WIFE FOR HIS OWN ADVANTAGE
93-Year-Old Woman Goes Viral When She Tells Internet, ‘I Need More Beer!’
L
OVE has some rules in Gokwe! Motion Nyoni (24) found a soulmate in Locadia Tshuma and he decided to take her to meet his father Marandu Nyoni before going ahead with lobola negotiations. However, when he took her home he learnt that his father was also Tshuma’s given husband. Motion’s mother who passed away four years ago left a will giving Marandu permission to marry Tshuma when the time came. With Tshuma being Marandu’s “inheritance wife” traditionally, Motion was meant to let go. This worried Marandu who took the matter to Chief Njelele but sadly for him there won’t be a traditional court to solve the matter because Motion and Tshuma have since fled to South Africa. “Marandu’s wife left a will
LOOKS like good times are brewing for a beer-loving 93-year-old woman in Pennsylvania. Last week, Olive Veronesi of Seminole was facing a serious problem: She is quarantining herself to avoid catching the coronavirus, but her beer supply was starting to run low. “I was on my last 12 cans, I have a beer every night, you know what, beer has vitamins in it, it’s good for you, as long as you don’t overdo it,” she told Pittsburgh CBS affiliate KDKA TV. Beer contains selenium, B vitamins, phosphorus, folate and niacin, as well as protein and fiber. But desperate times require desperate solutions, which is why Veronesi had a relative photograph her sharing a heartfelt message to the world: “I need more beer!!” The photo of Veronesi racked up more than 10,000 likes on social media and a few offers to get her suds stash restocked, KDKA reported. But the good times really began flowing for her on Monday when Coors Light, the beer she was drinking in her plea for pilsners, came through with 150 cans ― enough to last her another five months in quarantine.
before she died. In the will she stated that Marandu should marry her brother’s daughter after her death, and that daughter happens to be Locadia Tshuma who is also Motion’s long time girlfriend,” said Chief Njelele. Marandu feels his son acted in bad faith. “He was not supposed to run away because of the matter. We should settle it like real men. I’m a traditionalist — It’s wrong for me not to follow my late wife’s wishes. All along l was patiently waiting for Locadia to grow up since she was still young,” Nyoni told BMetro. Marandu wants his given wife but says his son should understand that it’s not anyone’s problem. “Motion had come back from South Africa to introduce his girlfriend as well as to pay lobola. It’s not anyone’s fault,” said Nyoni.
‘Sex-roster’ row turns nasty as first wife harasses second wife
Banksy Jokes His Wife Is Sick of Him Working At Home THE British street artist showed how he’s redecorated the bathroom with rat paintings during coronavirus quarantine in a hilarious Instagram post. Looks like Banksy is getting a little stir-crazy from self-isolation. At least that’s the impression from a series of photos the elusive street artist posted on Instagram on Tuesday. In the post, Banksy joked that his wife “hates it” when he works from home and then showed off photos of how he redecorated his bathroom in a rat theme. As ITV noted, Banksy commonly employs rats as a method of social commentary, so they were natural inspirations for his bathroom renovation. Of course, as the other photos showed, the devil was in the details. VILLAGERS in Matsika area in Zaka under Chief Nhema were left numb with shock after a man from the area confessed that he was allegedly using juju to sleep with women in the villageand that he also used his magic to turn people into donkeys which then slave for him in his fields The man, Admire Wasosa, reportedly claimed that he

A WOMAN who became the second wife in a polygamous marriage apparently revealed how sharing a man through a sex-roster is really like when she sued her husband’s first wife for threateningA her with unspecified action allegedly fuelled by a fight over their husband’s attention. Sikhathele Sibanda (35) from Makokoba suburb claimed her husband Francis Ncube (65)’s first wife Virginia Sibanda(53) who also stays in the same suburb but at different houses was apparently overwhelmed by jealousy as she suspected that she was getting Amore attention from their husband than her. Sikhathele said she was living in fear of Virginia after she threatened to come to her house and “curse” her. The dispute, centred on their husband’s attention, was heard at the Bulawayo Civil Court where Sikhathele was seeking a peace order against Virginia. “I am a female adult aged 35
and a second wife in a polygamous marriage.
Chris Beauchamp “It is against this background that I am pleading with the court to grant me a peace order against Virginia who is now a threat to me and my child,” I am applying for a peace order against Virginia Sibanda who is my husband Francis Ncube’s first wife. On 3 March this year, Virginia came to my house and threatened me for no apparent reason. This happened in the presence of our husband who she also insulted for defending me. “She further threatened me saying she wants to come and do something at my house and I don’t know what she wants to do. She is also coming to my house in my absence and I am now living in fear as I do not
know what she will be coming to do in my absence. “It is against this background that I am pleading with the court to grant me a peace order against Virginia who is now a threat to me and my child,” pleaded Sikhathele. In response Virginia said she was not a jealous person at all adding that she had a big heart and was also willing to live peacefully with Sikhathele. “I am not opposed to her application. The reason why I went to her house is because I wanted to go and inquire from my husband about my medical aid card. I dispute that I wanted to do something at her house,” said Virginia before she extended her hand to Sikhathele in a desperate bid to make peace with her. Presiding magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu who was apparently touched by Virginia’s remorsefulness dismissed Sikhathele’s request for a peace order.

‘I stole wife’s money to spoil girlfriend’ THIS came to light at the Harare Civil Court where Pretty Nyarai Langton was seeking for a protection order against her husband Petros Mashava as their relationship has turned sour due to their constant fights. “I want Petros to stop coming to my workplace at Mverechena where I stay as well as my parent’s residential place in Mufakose. “He steals my hard earned money and what pains me more is that he spends it with his girlfriend. “When I ask him about it he insults me which results in a fight and this is really disturbing my peace,” she said. The court also heard that Pretty wants nothing to do with Mashava to the extent of not wanting him to see his child. “I want this court to make him to stop visiting me even if his intensions are to see his child as he helps me with nothing towards his upkeep,” Pretty added Mashava did not oppose the granting of the protection order and even acknowledged cheating on Pretty. “What she is saying is true and I have on several occasions asked for forgiveness. “I would steal the money because I wanted to spoil my girlfriend and give her salon money. “I love my wife and I will take care of our child if I get employed,” Mashava said. Presiding magistrate Gladys Moyo granted the protection order by consent and ordered Mashava not to harass, assault, insult or threaten Pretty. Mashava was also advised to visit Pretty if he wants to see his child but should do it in peace. - H-METRO
Zaka witch confesses to turning people into donkeys enjoyed using mubobobo on women than having to be with them. Wasosa confessed before headman Pearson Matsika saying he wanted to quit black magic practice. He reportedly said his “retirement” came after he had allegedly slept with almost all women in his area. He, how-
ever, claimed that his juju did not work on women or girls who were still virgins. Headman Matsika said Wasosa came and surrendered a red cloth and knobkerrie which he said was used to conduct his “wickedness”. Wasosa told the headman that he decided to quit his magical
practice apparently after he had slept with all women in the area. “Before this weird case of female teachers at Nhema Primary School who are complaining that one of the male teachers is using mubobobo on them, I once presided over a similar case of a man from
this village who confessed that he was using mubobobo to sleep with women in the village. He said he slept with almost all women in the village, adding that he enjoyed using mubobobo than having to be with someone. “Wasosa’s confession came
after women complained that during the night they were experiencing mysterious close encounters and asked for permission from me to consult a traditional healer to expose the culprit. Before we hired a traditional healer he came forward and confessed that he was the one who was responsible for the mysterious bedroom attacks.”

ITH the continued rise in Covid-19 positive cases being recorded in Zambia, the call to strengthen measures to help stop the spread have been intensified as various social sectors join the fight. The entertainment industry, particularly the fashion and photography, has not been left out in pushing the agenda to create awareness. One of the emerging ways the industry is contributing to create awareness is through a photo shoot campaign to urge people to mask up. Models are teaming up with photographers to create neat pictures and posters to emphasize on the need to wear masks. This is being done in collaboration with clothing lines and fashion labels. “ There is a need to the entertainment industry to use every available way to educate people on the dangers of the Coronavirus. I am particularly impressed with models and photographers
Twins Plus Foundation adds Zed TV to host veteran comedians voice to Covid-19 fight By NOEL IYOMBWA
By TERENCE MISELO
THE Twins Plus Foundation, which has the ultimate hope of mobilizing multi-birth people like twins, triplets and quadruplets across Zambia, has joined the Covid-19 fight through a vigorous message sharing campaign on social media. The Foundation founders, twins, Joel and Noel Mwanza have demonstrated leadership, through their Facebook page “The Twins Plus Foundation” and WhatsApp group by sharing various messages and posts relating to the disease. In the quest to fight effects of the disease, the Mwanza brothers note that everyone is a potential victim but can also potentially have a solution. The Foundation, which fun-
damentally aims at promoting and impacting the lives of people born from vulnerable families and helping the Zambian society, has pledged to use its various platforms to counter the disease. The Foundation has also commended the government of Zambia through the Ministry of Health for their constant sensitization on the preventive measures. The World Health Organisation (WHO), which declared the Covid-19 pandemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30th January 2020, described it as a form of pneumonia, which affects the human respiratory system. The symptoms of Covid-19 include colds, headache, difficulty in breathing and dry cough.
Joel Mwanza, one of the twins, is a producer, reporter and presenter for the only kids news programme in Zambia named Z-Kids News on Muvi Television and is using the platform to educate young people on Covid-19. Worldwide hundreds of millions of young people are currently at home because of lockdown or quarantine. Therefore, Z-Kids News, in collaboration with the WADADA News for Kids, has created a project called “My Quarantine Life” to offer young people a platform to give their news, opinions and stories in a short video. The foundation also wishes to show gratitude to individuals, celebrities and organisations for their donations and continued support amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
AS a way of putting a smile on people’s faces during this time of quarantine arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, Zed Entertainment TV has lined up veteran local comedians for a stand-up comedy show. ZED Entertainment TV executive director Patrick Salubusa said that 13 veteran comedians are set to produce a comedy show dubbed ‘Zed Komedy’ show. “We want to use comedy to keep people in homes as you are aware most social places have been closed due to the Coronavirus outbreak so people will be accorded a chance to smile while locked up in homes,” he said. Salubusa famously known as Saulosi mentioned that among the comedians that have been lined up, include Bob Nkosha, Isaac Chamba, Ba Monde and Ozious Banda. The CEO observed that most comedians are not having shows at the moment hence this show will accord them a chance to practice. ‘Zed Komedy’ will also give detailed information in form of profiles of the 13 comics to be featured. And Salubusa has disclosed that as a way of empowering local actors, and developing talent in the country, Zed TV station has employed actors on a full-time basis. He said that 15 actors have been engaged on a full-time
basis while other production crews have been engaged on a part time. “We have taken talent identification seriously, so we have a number of local drama such as Boarding House a n d maj o rity o f
the a c t o r s are those that I have shared stage with in the past, such as Shi N’gonga and Mwisa,” he said. “We also have other local drama series such Village Burden, Chimpwena, and something which is coming called Kwatu.” And one of the Zed TV local actors in the drama Boarding House, Lottie Siame said that being part of the drama has been
awesome. Siame said that it is a great experience when it comes to telling Zambian stories adding that the drama relates to the everyday life.

N late February this year, a horrific accident happened on M10 Kazungula Road in Mosioa-Tunya National Park, a speeding truck hit and killed two white rhinos, a mother and her calf, as they were crossing the road looking for grazing grass. Department of National Parks and Wildlife Investigations at the scene of the accident revealed that the driver had ignored all road signage. The driver was charged with dangerous driving under section 155 of the Road Traffic Act No.11 of 2002, and the Court ordered him to pay a K4500 fine or, in default, to serve 12 months prison sentence. In addition to paying the fine or serving a 12 months prison sentence, he was also sentenced to serve a one-month simple imprisonment. While the conviction, a result of commendable work by police and park officials, cheered many in conservation circles, it also raised an important question, should Zambia be doing more to punish drivers for roadkill, especially when flagship species are involved? For one organization, Green Initiative Zambia (GIZ), the answer was unquestionably YES! Following the conviction of the truck driver, the organization called for the revision of Zambia Wildlife Act in order to criminalize the killing of animals through negligence in protected areas. In an article by Mildred Katongo published in the Times of Zambia, GIZ ex-

phant, amongst other species. When you consider that Zambia is already losing many of these iconic species to poaching, it is sad that the country is still losing them in a way that can be avoided, if only motorists could observe speed limits and pay attention to other important road signs when driving through protected areas like national parks and game management areas. The law should therefore provide strict punishment and maybe, even make compensation, relative to involved species, mandatory for
negligent motorists. In order to appreciate calls for stiffer punishment for roadkill, we must consider the value of wildlife to Zambia. For instance, rhinos have an estimated life span of 40-50 years. In that time, millions of local and foreign tourists and wildlife photographers will pay significant amounts to our national parks to see these rhinos. This money can then be used by government to provide vital social services and to build schools, hospitals and proper roads. In addition, female rhinos
can reproduce every two and a half years. Imagine how many offerings one rhino can produce if it lived out its full lifespan. This can be a game changer for Zambia’s rhino population, which was at some point extinct due to decades of rampant poaching. Rhinos and other wildlife help with creating balance in the ecosystems where they exist and thus promote healthy natural environments. When we remove these animals from their natural habit either through poaching or road ac-
cidents, we risk the overall health of our own environment. There is currently no legislation to criminalize road kills so accidents that happen in national parks and other protected areas are treated as mere traffic offences. Enabling road kills to be dealt with under the Zambia Wildlife Act could potentially guarantee stiffer punishments for offenders. The good news is the Ministry of Tourism and Arts is in the process of drawing up legislation aimed at dealing with road kills in national parks,

SOCIAL media and online interactions has given birth to a number of activities and trends. One such trend is ‘Vlogging’, which can loosely be defined as the act of sending messages and interactions using videos. Zambia has quite a good number of vloggers and the Nation Lifestyle caught up with one Chaze Mwale. He has over 11, 000 followers on his Vlogging page, a clear sign that he is among masters at Vlogging and he talks more about this trend that has made him influence such a huge social media following. Born on the Copperbelt in Mufulila to Nelson Mwale and Micah Nambela, Chaze did his primary education at Simfex Academy School and later did his Secondary Schooling at Chelston Secondary. He runs a page called ‘CHAZE THE DRUMMER’ and on it, has two interactive shows, The Table chat and Think Out Loud. WHAT IS A VLOG/VLOGGING? A Vlog is a set of Videos that someone regularly posts on social media in which they record their thoughts, experience or talk about a subject. Vlogging has evolved into a giant community on social media where people can release any information that they want. Vlogs are a unique way for people to people in so many aspects of their lives as they deliver a deeper context through imagery.
especially when high value species were involved. According to a statement issued by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe, “This will be in consultation with Road Transport Safety Agency and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.” He added that in the meantime the Department of National Parks and Wildlife would continue engaging the Road Development Agency on the possibility of having speed humps, especially on known animal crossing points in the parks.
Kalandanya Music unites Hip hop has lost culture’ artistes against Covid-19 Music

AS it stands, hip hop has lost its culture and slowly losing its values young upcoming Hip pop artiste Joseph Musonda has observed. In an interview, Musonda A.K.A Jay Carter said that hip hop is supposed to be an influence, a way artistes speak their mind freely either positive or not but that right at the moment, hip hop is not getting the audience that it deserves. “People have shifted to loud type of music like that of the Dope Boys. Hip hop artistes is slowly switching the styles and trying out new sounds, same thing with producers. Hip hop isn’t dead, it’s up to us to keep it alive. R & B on the other side is doing so much fine, it’s still alive and making so much progress,” he said. Having started writing and taken interest in music in the ninth grade in 2010 at Kanini Basic School in Ndola, Musonda had his first studio record in 2014 with song called ‘Punch-
lines’ in Ndola. “I am currently working on my soon to be released EP. In August last year, I had my 1st video done for my song titled ‘Boys in the hood’. The song gives a tour of the hood I come from,” he said. “I have other songs like ‘Be Strong’ and ‘Radio love’ which features other talented singers Toni Drops and T-Tride. My latest single features Tremaya and it is titled ‘Pamodzi’ and is set to drop on the 17th of April 2020. “ He said he also did a song looking at GBV and other social issues. Jay Carter said that his biggest challenge was promoting of songs adding that as an individual artiste, it’s hard to have everything in place. Musonda said that there are so many songs he has done but not promoted due to lack of funds. He further cited lack of support from the people especially established artistes as another challenge.

TIME TO CRACK DOWN ON ROADKILL IN ZAMBIA?
ecutive officer Jonas Kunda argued that the current law did not provide enough punishment for people killing animals through accidents, citing the punishment handed to the Livingstone rhino killer as not being sufficient to punish the perpetrator and later would-be offenders. According to public records, more than 70 animals were hit or killed by speeding drivers on the M10 Kazungula road alone between 2014 and 2020. Animals killed include rhinos, giraffe, buffalo, impala, baboons, zebra and ele-

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LOVE AND INTEREST FOR VLOGGING The interest for vlogging started in my secondary school days and when I completed school, the zeal and love to start my own youth program/show on TV grew. I went to local TV stations asking them to work with me on my proposal but non of them got back to me after promising to get back to me soon. After a long wait for a response from TV stations that never came, I went to a certain company and gave them my proposal and they gave me a yes but they were so slow to start the process and I felt they were dragging me and my proposal, so I decided to start hiring a media crew were I could do interactive interviews with influential people, street kids of which it started to gain a following. YOUR PAGE SAYS PRO-DRUMMER, CAN YOU SHADE SOME LIGHT THERE? Apart from being a Vlogger, I am also a professional drummer at Shalom Embassy Church and I have worked with some big artistes in the music industry. Before joining Shalom Embassy, I used to be a member of the boys Bridgade blast band, United Church of Zambia for over three years. The musical side of me gets it’s influence from my grandfather, the famous lead guitarist, Uncle Rex. I follow in his foot steps. T H E T H I N K OUT LOUD S H O W ON YOUR P A G E , W H A T ITS ALL ABOUT? Think Out Loud is a show I have on my page on which
I feature random people from all walks of life asking them questions and getting their views on everyday issues and topics like how well do they understand Bill 10 or how well do they understand preventive measures on COVID-19. AND THE TABLE CHAT SHOW? The Table Chat with Chaze is another show I have on my page where I get to interact with politicians, Civic leaders, people from the entertainment world. The Table Chat with Chaze targets and showcases influential people explaining how they started and be where they are today. The purpose is to inspire others that if those did it and made it despite the lows of life, then any can also do it. On our first episode I featured His Worship Lusaka Mayor, Mr Miles Sampa. The response was overwhelming and encouraging. I have a lot on my guest list. People will not be disappointed. THE NAME CHAZE THE DRUMMER PAGE? When I started the page I named it Chaze The Drummer and I used to post videos of me playing drums of which it gained a huge following. After even adding the other two shows on the page, I decided not to change the name despite a huge following because I didn’t want to change the face that people had gotten used to. I didn’t want to confuse people that is how I have maintained the page name Chaze The Drummer even today. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR PAGE? The whole purpose of my page Chaze The Drummer is to educate, inform and entertain the masses out there.

T
HE idea was simple. Ban all booze, and you’ll prevent drunken fights, reduce domestic violence, stop drunk driving, and eliminate the weekend binge-drinking so prevalent across South Africa. Police, medics and analysts estimate - conservatively that alcohol is involved in, or responsible for, at least 40 percent of all emergency hospital admissions. In normal times some 34, 000 trauma cases arrive at emergency departments in South Africa every week. But since the nationwide lockdown came into force last month to prevent the spread of coronavirus, that figure has plummeted, dramatically, by roughly two thirds, to about 12, 000 admissions. “It’s a significant impact,” said Professor Charles Parry, with some understatement. He has been modelling the extent to which the alcohol ban has been responsible for the decline in those numbers for South Africa’s Medical Research Council. “If we end the prohibition on alcohol sales, we’re going to see about 5, 000 alcohol admissions in trauma units coming back into the system (each week),” he predicted. Police minister ‘gone rogue’ The fact that those 5, 000 extra hospital beds now stand empty could soon prove invaluable if the pandemic - which has been held, impressively, in check here for several weeks - begins to spread again exponentially, as government advisors predict it may. But medical experts, while urging the government to keep the alcohol ban in place, also point out that heavy drinking weakens the immune system and may have a particular effect on respiratory conditions. “Covid-19 is going to have a more severe impact on heavy drinkers… and in South Africa many people live in crowded conditions. “So, alcohol sales… may increase community transmission (as people often drink socially)… and we’re likely to see an increase in gender-based violence and harm towards children,” warned Professor Parry. Alcohol and Covid-19: World Health Organization’s advice • Avoid alcohol altogether • Ifyou drink keep it to a minimum • I m m u n e s y s t e m weakened by alcohol, especially if you drink heavily • Reducesability to cope with infectious diseases • Can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome • Drinkingalso increases risk of domestic violence Source: WHO But how to enforce such a draconian and unprecedented clampdown for five weeks, or possibly more if South Africa’s lockdown, due to end on April 30, is extended once again? The man responsible for policing the new prohibition has provoked anger in some quarters by appearing to encourage the security forces to take heavy-handed, and potentially illegal, action against those caught breaking the rules. There have already been numerous worrying examples, including the alleged beating to death of a man caught drinking in his own yard. Police Minister Bheki Cele, well-known for his abrasive language and his swaggering enthusiasm for the alcohol ban, recently warned that his

forces would “destroy the infrastructure where the liquor is sold.” “It’s deeply concerning when you have senior political leaders encouraging police officers to use violence or force, or to break the law. It seems as if the police minister has gone rogue,” said Gareth Newham,
“It’s not looking good at all,” said Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela, the country’s first black female brewery owner and chair of South Africa’s Beer Association, who fears her small business may go under if the ban continues for much longer. “The arguments against lifting the ban do make sense. A
South Africa’s official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), which is in favour of a “smart lockdown model” that would allow people to buy alcohol for a few hours each day. But another party, the radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has called the DA’s
a crime expert at South Africa’s Institute for Security Studies. South Africa’s alcohol industry initially sought to challenge the ban in court, arguing that it was unconstitutional and introduced without consultation. It has since backed down. But while many in the industry admit the importance of supporting national efforts to fight the virus, there is frustration about a “one-size-fitsall” approach that is causing significant damage to many businesses. ‘It could be game over’
lot of people are unemployed and use alcohol as a get-away drug,” she acknowledged, but she said a more sophisticated approach - perhaps allowing limited alcohol sales - could save her industry from collapse. “It could be game over for us,” agreed Nick Smith, an American who owns a craft brewery outside Cape Town. “This one-size-fits-all rule is having a major impact on smaller businesses like ours,” added Smith. Rise in home brewing That argument is echoed by
proposal “murderous” and “racist” since the current ban appears to be having the most positive impact on health in poorer, largely black, communities. Many people have compared South Africa’s prohibition to the US’s famous, decade-long crackdown which began in 1920 in response to campaigning by religious and moral groups, and was immortalised by Hollywood in films like Some Like It Hot and The Untouchables. As with Chicago’s notorious gangster, Al Capone, there are
concerns that the alcohol ban could push the sector here into the hands of criminals who already control a lucrative chunk of South Africa’s cigarette industry. “The longer the lockdown goes on, the more criminal networks will be able to entrench their ability to sell and distribute alcohol,” confirmed Gareth Newham, warning that the government was already losing a fortune in taxation because of the ban. Alcohol consumption in South Africa: • 31 percent of people aged 15 and above drink • 59 percent of them are heavy or binge drinkers • 26 percent of alcohol is homemade or illegally produced • Up to 60, 000of sale and distribution outlets are licensed • About 120, 000are not Source: 2018 WHO report and 2016 South African government report
The ban has certainly tapped into deep undercurrents here in South Africa - a country with a history of apartheid where black citizens were once banned from drinking in public, and some workers were even paid in alcohol, causing huge social problems. “We, South Africans, don’t have a good relationship with alcohol. Over the years, it’s something that has to a certain extent got out of control,” said Nxusani-Mawela. But as things stand, one aspect of the ban does appear to be uniting people from different walks of life. It has created a new enthusiasm for home brewing, which has always been a firm fixture in rural communities. Videos and recipes for pineapple beer and the more traditional corn and sorghum known as “umqombothi,” are now being widely touted on social media, alongside warnings that such drinks, if wrongly prepared, could prove dangerous. – BBC.

Towards the end of the
silver bubble, with increased recoveries, Kabwe Mine kept making a lot of money. It is estimated the Hunt brothers owned about 30 percent of all the physical silver that was not in government hands estimated at 4.5 billion in 1980 dollars. The problem arose when the two brothers became greedier, such that between their physical silver and futures contracts, they controlled almost three quarters of the entire silver market. But of course, like in everything else, government and policymakers like having control of the markets. So, the US Federal Bank stepped in and “actively” encouraged banks to stop lending to the two kids. Suddenly, banks and brokers became spooked and the Hunt kids couldn’t meet their debts, pulling their lines of credit.
