LONDON COURT CLEARS ZAMBIA OF CORRUPTION … as Zambia is awarded US$2.7m BY KALUNGA MWAPE A LONDON court has dismissed corruption charges against the Zambian government. The court has also awarded Zambia costs amounting to $2,700,000 and over $197,000 in reimbursable expenses. This is in a matter Lodestar International, a company registered in North Carolina, USA sued the Zambian government on contractual grounds in the London Court of Arbitration in the United Kingdom claiming that it had lost a contract to build police houses because of corruption. In its ruling however, the London Court of Arbitration found in favour of the Zambian government and ruled out corruption, awarding costs to the defendants. Home Affairs Minister, Stephen Kampyongo told a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday
that Lodestar International and Lodestar International Zambia sued the government in 2018 on contractual grounds. “In 2018 Lodestar International LLC and Lodestar International Zambia Limited sued the Zambian Government in the London court of international arbitration through their lawyers based in the United States of America, Messrs Cooley LLP on a Contract entered into by the parties on September 4, 2012 for the Construction of Housing Units for the Ministry of Home Affairs, mainly the Zambia Police Service,” Mr Kampyongo said. COVID MISCONCEPTIONS
IT IS shocking that seven months after the country recorded its first coronavirus case, many Zambians are still in denial about the existence of the disease and the fact that it can affect anyone. Sadly, ignorance among a large part of the population is now clearly the main hindrance to the effective combating of this deadly pandemic. It is ironic that the very people who may be most in danger of contracting Covid-19 are the ones doubting the seriousness of the disease by insisting that it is a disease for the rich. That so many people in rural and high density areas still remain ignorant about the pandemic and its devastating impact on all forms of life, calls for a shift in the packing of information. Health Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya said yesterday it is worrying that many people in the country are still living with the myth that the Corona Virus only affected urban areas. Dr Chilufya said such a mentality was worrying as it was not the case on the ground. The minister said that rural areas have equally recorded a number of cases that may not have been captured in the recent months because of the same myth. “The virus is beyond Lusaka and the Copperbelt. Rural areas are also affected and it is only important that each one of us takes responsibility of their own actions in order to protect the next person,” he said. The level of scepticism towards the Covid is high particularly in high density and rural areas where dwellers believe that the disease affects those who live better than them. This kind of ignorance is dangerous to a country that is fighting to bring the Covid pandemic under control by urging all citizens to adhere to health regulations. Sadly the ignorance is fuelled by denial more than anything else. We think that the message is not getting to the people and drastic action is needed to change this mindset. It is time to do away with the nice messages and veiled threats of what Covid can do. There should be no more pussyfooting about the Covid pandemic. The government has a duty to show the nation what health workers are grappling with every day and night to save lives. It may not be surprising to find that even the people showing disbelieve towards the disease, have also lost relatives to the same ailment. Such is the impact of Covid, that Government has warned of the escalation of cases in rural areas. Dr Chilufya has warned during his daily updates that the Covid fight is not to be taken light or ignored by any one or any class of people. This is a disease spread by air and contact, and these are variables which no human being can avoid. With our traditional beliefs promoting community gatherings for weddings and funerals, the Covid-19 has found a fertile ground to breed. These are practices which Government through the ministry of Health has been discouraging. However, with the ignorance being expressed about the disease, it is doubtful people in rural areas for instance, would heed any advice to avoid gatherings. For all intents and purposes, community gatherings are a show of love and respect and any suggestions to discontinue this would not be welcomed. It is therefore imperative that the government not only changes its messaging, but also engage traditional leaders on the dangers that gatherings pose. While the people may be sceptical of a person from the urban setting warning about gatherings, the same message coming from a traditional leader may find receptive minds. This means involving local leadership to teach and explain the impact of Covid- 19 to the people. More importantly, leaders must lead by example and show respect to the guidelines by following the rules. This means that whether one is from the ruling party or opposition, they should show responsible leadership and tell their members the truth about Covid. Let our people not perish because of ignorance.

ZAMBIA’S CORRUPT FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION
By ANTONIO MWANZA FROM that February day, in 2003 when President Levy Mwanawasa went to Parliament and slapped President Chiluba with 168 charges of corruption, the fight against corruption in Zambia has become a political tool that politicians have often used to target political opponents to gain political mileage by shouting ‘corruption’ the loudest. In this country, many people believe that corruption is only corruption if it involves a politician. Like if you pay a bribe to obtain a Drivers Licence, or if you pay a traffic police officer a K50 to avoid being charged with a traffic offense such as over speeding that is not corruption. In Zambia corruption is most treated as corruption when a politician is named or involved; the whole fight against corruption has been corrupted and politicized. Equally, the levels of lack of information and misinformation is not helping matters. Many people believe that Government resources are in the hands and control of politicians. This is very far from the truth: Politicians don’t control state coffers, it is the technocrats, the Permanent Secretaries and their fellow bureaucrats who are CONTROLLING and SPENDING agents of state resources not politicians. That is
essentially why the Auditor General’s and the Public Accounts Reports cite technocrats and not politicians as culprits of corruption and abuse of public resources because they are the ones in charge of the state coffers not the politicians. You fight corruption not by shouting the loudest or by accusing others of corruption, no, you fight corruption by taking the necessary fiscal, social and legislative steps to address the causes, seal the loopholes and punish the culprits. While Levy Mwanawasa used the fight against corruption to market himself, the results clearly show that other than using the fight against corruption for political gain there were no real practical measures that he and his government took to stamp out corruption. For instance Levy’s so called Task Force Against corruption only enriched his lawyer friends whom he appointed on the Task Force. US$18 million of taxpayers money was spent on Mwanawasa’s lawyer friends and foreign investigations while Chiluba was acquitted of all the charges. In fact the independent Evaluation Report done by a consortium of international donors concluded that many stakeholders believed that The Task Force was used as a personal tool by Mwanawasa to settle political scores and market himself as an anti-graft President for political expediency. Like I earlier said, you don’t fight corruption by shouting ‘corruption’ the loudest, you fight corruption by putting in place the appropriate fiscal, social and legislative measures to combat draft and that is exactly what the PF Government has done as can be demonstrated by the numerous PRACTICAL steps that this Government has put in place:
Intelligence Centre(FIC). Additionally, Cabinet has since agreed to further strengthen and re-align the mandate and operations of FIC and ACC to ensure a more cohesive and effective way of fighting corruption. 2. The Government Increased funding to improve the management and operational capacity of ACC as well as FIC and other investigative wings.
1. Strengthening legislation: The PF Government has strengthened the anti-graft laws by for instance introducing the Public Finance Management Laws as well as operationalizing the Financial
Ultimately it will take you and me, not just ECL and officials to fight corruption; corruption is a moral, social as well as a legal issue and it will take every one of us to demonize and fight it.
3. The PF Government is paying particular interest to increasing the staffing levels of the ACC and other investigative wings with the correct number of skilled experts in various anti-graft techniques. 4. The PF Government has embarked on the decentralization process of the ACC to ensure widespread presence especially in urban and peri-urban areas of the country. 5. Government has continued education and sensitization of the negative effects of corruption as well and the unwavering support that the PF Government has continued to give to the work and mandate of the Auditor General’s office as well as the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament are yielding major results as an be seen from the increased number of prosecutions and convictions of erring officers. 6. President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has demonstrated unparalleled leadership by not shielding any member of his administration from being investigated and prosecuted by the competent courts of law. Under ECL, there are no sacred cows, anyone and every one whether Minister or an ordinary cadre is subject to the law of the land.

BOZ governor sacked (From page 1)
Dr Pule welcomed the appointment of Mr Mvunga as Bank of Zambia Governor as the right person to revive the economy. Dr Pule who is also Christian Democratic Party president, said Mr Mvunga was experienced and he deserved the appointment. He said the former Governor Denny Kalyalya had failed to stabilise the currency but that with his qualifications, Mr Mvunga would be able to do this. “I have just called him to congratulate him for the appointment. President Lungu has made the right decision and I am confident that things will now move in the right direction,” Dr Pule said. “ We have seen Mr Mvunga working in critical positions not only in Zambia but also abroad. I think people need to appreciate what the President has done,” Dr Pule said. President Edgar Lungu yesterday terminated the contract of Bank of Zambia (BOZ) Governor, Dr Kalyalya with immediate effect. President Lungu has since appointed deputy secretary to the Cabinet for finance and economic development, Christopher Mvunga as new BOZ Governor replacing Dr Kalyalya. This is contained in a statement released to the Daily Nation yesterday by Mr Isaac Chipampe, special assistant for press and public relations. Meanwhile, the Head of State has also appointed director of planning in the ministry of National Development Planning, Dr Mike Masiye as deputy secretary to the Cabinet for finance and economic development replacing Mr Mvunga.
President Lungu has wished Dr Kalyalya well in his future endeavours. He also wished Mr Mvunga and Dr Masiye respectively success in their new roles. Meanwhile, The Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) Chairperson,Yusuf Dodia has said the role of the Bank of Zambia is to ensure stability of the economy and macroeconomic indicators and as such, the newly appointed Governor, Christopher Mvunga, should focus on these two areas. Mr Dodia said the new Governor should be professional and ensure that he provided credible information to the Ministry of Finance as it formulated the 2021 national budget. He encouraged Mr Mvunga to recognise the need to lay cards on the table as a country and expose the real challenges currently being faced while being be able to put in place strategic measures that would deal with the stability of the economy by stimulating it. “Mr Mvunga should bring the experience from the Ministry of Finance where he served in a senior position and ensure that he uses the team around him constructively to achieve his goals at the BoZ. He should be professional and allow his team to do the ground work,” he said in an interview. Mr Dodia also said it was sad that the contract for the former BoZ Governor, Dr Denny Kalyalya, was terminated. “Dr Kalyalya joined the BoZ at a lower level before becoming Governor. So he had a rich experience. Zambia is going through challenges times and there is very little the BoZ can do to correct that.
No arrest in ‘Chopped’ manhood case By KALOBWE BWALYA NO ARRESTS have been made concerning the wounding of a man whose manhood was cut off in the early hours of Tuesday by unknown people in Lusaka, Police Assistant spokesperson Geoffrey Chilabi has disclosed. In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Chilabi appealed to the general public to come forward and help the police with investigations. Mr Chilabi said, police have launched a manhunt until the culprits are brought to book and investigations have continued. But relatives of the Lusaka man who has lost his manhood after criminals attacked him on Tuesday have disclosed that the victim was a mental health patient. Bristol Ntalasha, the cousin to the victim said Abednego Katuka has been roaming the streets since his illness. Mr Ntalasha has however called on the police to bring the culprits to book. The man is currently admitted in the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH), nursing the wounds that were inflicted on him. According to UTH public relations officer, Natalie Mashikolo, the male adult was brought to UTH in a semi-conscious state by the police. She said this was after officers were informed by members of the public that there was a man lying in a pool of blood under the flyover bridge. “The victim was attended to in our Accident and Emergency Unit. He is stable and is currently receiving treatment,” she said.

Mr. Kampyongo disclosed that Lodestar claimed that Zambia was in breach of contract because it failed or never tried at all to reasonably perform the obligations under the contract and that Zambia corruptly awarded a contract to AVIC international to do the same works Lodestar was contracted to perform. “In defense the Zambian Government stated that there was no breach of contract because the conditions precedent to the fulfillment and enforcement of the contract were not met and therefore there was no compliance with the legal requirements for the enforcement of the contract as required by Zambian law particularly, the Constitution of The Republic of Zambia and the Zambian Public Procurement Act Number 12 of 2008 among other reasons,” he said. And Mr. Kampyongo said that the Arbitral Tribunal found that there was insufficient evidence to prove any corruption allegations against Zambia or any official in the employment of the Zambian Government.

LCC SUMMON CHINESE INVESTOR, PHI RESIDENTS OVER PLOT SCANDAL By KALOBWE BWALYA AFTER weeks of wrangling and counter threats over a PHI plot alleged to have been irregularly sold to a Chinese contractor for a shopping mall, the Lusaka City Council has summoned the contractor and PHI residents . LCC has summoned both Zangshi Wood Investment Limited Company, a Chinese company together with PHI residents over the land wrangle that has erupted on the ZESCO way leave situated along Great East Road. Lusaka Town Clerk Alex Mwansa in an interview with the Daily Nation disclosed that the company which is owned by a Chinese national bought a parcel of land from a Zambian which was a private transaction between the original owner of the land and the Zangshi Wood Investment Limited Company and the process was facilitated by the ministry of Lands.
Mr Mwansa said, this is why the council decided to call both parties so that the parties could reach a conclusion that would satisfy both parties, because the company had already obtained title deeds. He said there were procedures in term of canceling titles but the two parties needed to sit down. Mr Mwansa however assured PHI residents that the matter would be analyzed and be resolved in the best interest of both parties. He said as a local authority which is a planning authority for the city of Lusaka, they had received numerous complaints from PHI residents concerning the planned construction of the three storey building by a Chinese company. According to the letter of concern from PHI residents over the creation of stand No LUS 38020 to Lusaka Town Clerk, the residents want to know from LCC whether stand number LUS 38020 was created within the laid down procedure
as per law requirement. Secondly why ZESCO gave consent to developments or construction within a way leave when it had denied the residents’ numerous requests to develop the land in the past. The residents also wanted to know whether or not the tittle is eligible to own land in Zambia as stipulated in the Lands Act Cap 184 of the laws of Zambia and if the said land can be offered to PHI Residents Association for communal use. “We have summoned both parties, the Chinese company and residents today (yesterday) because the process was facilitated by the ministry of Lands so that we can listen to both parties. We want to reach a conclusion that will satisfy both parties because as you might be aware the company has tittle and there are procedures in terms of cancelling tittles, so we are appealing to PHI residents that the matter will be analyzed and resolved in the best interest of both parties,” said Mr Mwansa.

Dr Chanda wanted all Zambians to have access to clean and safe water and sanitation services without leaving anyone behind, in line with the country’s Vision 2030, the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He said once the GRZ/
Germany Government funded project is completed, an additional extra 3,600 households will be provided with clean and safe drinking water in Kazomba, Kyawama and surrounding townships in Solwezi. Dr Chanda said the increased mining and other economic activities in North Western Province has led to increased migration to the area, thereby increasing demand for water and sanitation services. He said currently the project only requires an extra K1.5 million to be completed. Meanwhile, Dr Chanda bemoaned the high levels of encroachments along the Solwezi streams which has resulted in water pollution in the area. He said as a result of high content of iron coupled with turbidity of raw water at water source, which was as high as 5, 000, the water utility company in the area was spending a lot of money to treat water.

Kitwe Council warns residents against illegal constructions By SANFROSSA MANYINDA THE Kitwe City Council (KCC) has warned residents against carrying out construction works without written permission from the local authority. And the council says it would not hesitate to demolish structures that would be built without authorization. Council Public Relations Officer Nelly Nkolongo said that the council had noted with concern the rate at which structures were being built without permission in the district. “We will not allow this trend to continue as a local authority. We advise people to always get the required documents and permission before they start building on land that does not belong to them to avoid incurring losses,” she said. Ms Nkolongo also advised owners of such structures to demolish them on their own before the council moved in. She said that the council had received numerous queries from members of the general public on people building without authority. She said that the situation had resulted in people missing out on appropriate guidance hence building even on road reserves, open spaces, wayleaves, water courses, utility service lines and other private/ public property. “ We are appealing to the general public to adhere to the provision of the law and avoid inconveniences for this is a very serious crime,” Ms Nkolongo said.

Dear editor, A small billboard signals the direction to “Marrietta” as the community fondly calls the place. Named after Mother Marietta - that revered Catholic Nun who touched many lives - a tiny Centre is sandwiched in a densely populated area of Matero East. “Hard work is a weapon against poverty,” reads the motto inscribed at the entrance of the Centre, which is situated few yards from St. Monica Convent where the nuns reside. And this centre is producing wonders! “We offer life training skills,” said Sister Cecilia Tembo, who founded the Centre in 2006 alongside her colleagues of the Little Servants of Mary Immaculate. The Centre targets vulnerable youths and women who are trained in catering, carpentry, tailoring and design, as well as computer studies.
Suddenly I just realized that this coronavirus is all too real and closer to home that I had previously thought. Yes indeed I saw that even Honourable Chishimba Kambwili, one of the original doubting Thomas also announced that he had tested positive. More recently we had more leaders announcing their covid statuses, including the republican Vice President, Madam Inonge Wina. My prayer is that all those afflicted and affected should receive healing mercies from God. For now that we know this covid is real, let us take it as a serious threat to our nation. Let us unite in fighting covid19. There should be no politicking in fighting this pandemic. This is a disease capable of wiping out any nation careless enough to ignore the threat. I must also hasten to thank the government, through the Health minister, Dr Chitalu Chilufya for all that they are doing to save lives. The frontline health workers are the true heroes risking their lives. Without their sacrifice, the situation could have been worse. Lastly I want to wish everyone of our leaders both in opposition and government, a quick recovery. The nation needs you. Tinah Mutale, Youth activist, Lusaka
The ugly face of child abuse Dickson Jere “We are honoring the works of mother Marrietta,” said Sister Tembo as she took me on a conducted tour of the place at her invitation. “We have heard a lot about your works in Matero and we decided to invite you so that you can see what we are doing. We can work together,” she said, referring to my Matero Initiative Projects. A small computer Laboratory operates on five “borrowed” computers. But the students are getting trained by the dedicated staff - literally volunteers - who work long hours changing the lives of the Matero youths without pay. And the owners of the computers want to be paid. I was touched. “I need to make few calls to friends and partners to see how we can get some few second-hand computers,” I promised, as a matter of fact, I set up similar computer labs in schools in Matero. “Everything you see here were donations from priests and Good Samaritans,” she said, while pointing at some desks and chairs that form part of the furniture of the Centre. Boarders have sleep on the floor. “You need bunker beds,” I said as I viewed the small rooms where students reside. “But where will I get the money?” Sister Tembo asked, with a little giggle, she shot back. “That is why you are here! We invited you so that you link us up to others like you!” I did not respond immediately to that plea. But those of us reading and are able to make a small contribution to this centre, kindly inbox me and we talk about how to help. I made some donations of handsanitizer and masks - making a difference, slowly! Dickson Jere
Dear editor, Child abuse can be defined as unfair, cruel or harmful treatment of a child at any given time. In a nutshell, child abuse is criminalised in Zambia meaning that it is an illegal act of law. Child abuse falls into the following categories: emotional, neglect, physical and sexual among others. Emotional abuse is one that is attributed to the perpetrator making nasty comments or abusive language to the child. Neglect is a form of child abuse which arises as a result of not providing the basic needs of life such as clothes, food and shelter. This can also be termed as lack of parental care. Physical abuse implies physically beating the child for no apparent reasons or on flimsy grounds. Inflicting any physical harm on the child also amounts to physical abuse. Even though there is a valid reason, physical abuse should not be used as a way of disciplining the child. Sexual abuse entails having carnal knowledge with the child under the age of sixteen years. This form of abuse takes various forms as defilement, sodomy to mention but a few. Cases of child abuse have taken a toll and are common to both boys and girls. An old woman may entice a little boy to have sex with her for instance. Other than that, fondling the breasts or private parts of the child is tantamount to sexual abuse too. In the majority of cases involving child sexual abuse go unreported or escape the dragnet. This happens for the sole reason of fearing embarrassment in the family from the community members. This is absolutely

However, the safety of children is uncertain because the perpetrators of the crime of child abuse have no empathy. so in that the perpetrators of these offences could be the relatives of the victims. The family members may include among others; the following: aunties, brothers, fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters and uncles, The perpetrators of child abuse does not exclude non relatives. Non family members have been involved in rampant cases of
child abuse. However, the safety of children is uncertain because the perpetrators of the crime of child abuse have no empathy. From the psychological aspect, the mind of the abused child is damaged either intellectually or otherwise. Worse still, the child is affected psycho-spiritually. There is a growing mirth among some men that having carnal knowledge (sex) with a virgin or small girl, one would be cured of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV and AIDS. The war against child abuse cannot be won single handedly. It requires concerted efforts in that individuals and the civil society organisations should come on board to fight the vice. The civil society organisations should scale up their programmes in fighting the vice of child abuse which has become rampant. On the other hand, there is also need for political will. Politicians should formulate policies aimed at stiffen punishment against perpetrators of child abuse. Zambia is a signatory to the United Nations Charter of the rights of the children. As such, there is need to ensuring that children are protected from any form of abuse so that they can grow up well and become responsible citizens in future. It is high time people broke the walls of silence of child abuse by reporting all forms of abuse inflicted on children to the appropriate agencies such as the Victim Support Unit (VSU) to the police stations for punitive measures to be meted out. This will ultimately help in deterring the would be offenders. Abash child abuse. Elemiya Phiri

NO FAVORITISM …players to fight for Chipolopolo places, says Micho By MICHAEL MIYOBA
Z
AMBIA National Soccer team coach Milutin
‘Micho’ Sredojevic says he will not favour any players when making selection for national team assignments. Micho said his aim is to establish authority of justice where players will be selected based on how they perform as preparations for the 2022 Afcon qualifiers resume. He said no players has the right to claim a position in the national team because each one needs to earn their call ups by working hard for their respective clubs. He urged players try to understand that they were under the spotlight and need to make sure that they are better than they were yesterday. He said that his technical bench would sweep through the country to scout for under-23 players that will be pitted against the CHAN team. “We shall have visitation to the provinces where we shall build capacities of technical staff and secondly; we shall make an Under-23 squad o f young players from the provinces that will make t h e provincial teams which will later play against our CHAN team so that we
can recognize and see whether there are players we have missed on the local level,” Micho said. “We have two targets with Zambian footballers to establish authority of knowledge and the second is authority of justice where no player will be favored, no player has the right to say I’m there, you are not there. You need to earn and deserve and that is my obligation of justice towards all the supporters and can assure you that this will happen exactly,” he said. Micho said Zambia has everything to qualify for the Afcon after missing two times but there is need to encourage the players to work hard to be able to deliver when the qualifiers resume in November. “It will be difficulty. We have a fighting competitive advantage ahead of our opponents Botswana but if we want to achieve something needs to change. Time ahead of us looks like ample but it is not enough,” he said. Micho hailed foreign stars Enock Mwepu, Patson Daka (both Red Bull Salzburg), Emmanuel Banda and Edward Chilufya (IF Djurgardens) who have continued to impress in Europe. Zambia returns to AFCON duty in November with back-to-back fixtures against Botswana before winding up in March with matches against Algeria and Zimbabwe.
SEVILLA won the Europa League tournament for a record sixth time thanks to victory over Inter Milan in a thrilling final in Cologne. The drama started when Sevilla defender Diego Carlos fouled Romelu Lukaku for an Inter penalty - and ended when Lukaku deflected Carlos' bicycle kick into his own net. It means Inter Milan's wait for a trophy will tick over into a 10th year at least. Lukaku gave the Italian side an early lead from the penalty spot for his 34th goal of the season, extending his record of scoring in consecutive Europa League games to 11. Luuk de Jong scored two headers - from Jesus Navas and Ever Banega crosses - to put Sevilla into the lead. Inter were level when Diego Godin nodded in to make it 2-2 in the 35th minute. The game could not continue at that high tempo, but with extra-time on the cards, there was a twist to come. Carlos flew into the air to meet a high ball with an overhead kick which was going wide until Lukaku stuck out a leg and diverted it past his own goalkeeper. It was a first trophy in the managerial career of Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui, whose side are unbeaten since February, a run of 21 games. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain face Bayern Munich in Sunday's Champions League final in Lisbon. PSG's first appearance in the final of Europe's elite club competition comes in the month its 50th birthday celebrations. If Paris Saint-Germain beat Bayern Munich in Sunday's Champions League final in Lisbon, the pictures will probably be of Neymar's tears of joy or wild scenes of celebration in the French capital. -BBC
Makembo guides athletes By MICHAEL MIYOBA
ZAMBIA Sports Fans Association Patron, Peter Makembo has called on the Zambia national soccer team and the Olympic bound athletes to prepare adequately for their assignments for the country to achieve its set objectives. Speaking in an interview, Makembo urged the Zambia National team to begin preparations for the 2022 Afcon qualifiers set to resume in November. Zambia resumes the Afcon qualifiers with back-to-back fixtures against Botswana in November before meeting Zimbabwe and Algeria in the final two qualifying fixtures. Makembo said there is need for the Chipolopolo to begin preparations now to achieve their target of qualifying for the Afcon after missing out at the last two editions of the continental showpiece. He said early preparations will also work to National team coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s advantage because he will be able to come up with a team which will compete at the Championship of African Nations CHAN tournament set for January
2021 in Cameroon. “CAF has announced the new dates for the Afcon qualifiers, therefore we have started preparations early for the coach to identify which players are fit to represent the country when the qualifiers begin. “As a country we have very good players but if we are not careful we may struggle against Botswana when the qualifiers begin so we need start now,” Makembo said. Makembo has also urged Olympic bound teams to remain focused and train from home for the crucial Olympic Games which were pushed to next year. He said it is unfortunate that athletes have been compelled to train from home because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Makembo said athletes should not be discouraged because the pandemic has not only affected them alone, but all athletes across the globe. Meanwhile, Makembo has reaffirmed his association’s commitment to support all teams representing the country at deferent national assignments.

MYSTERIOUS FIRE STALKS OLD WOMAN – INVISIBLE BEINGS SPRINKLE MEALIE-MEAL ON THE FLOOR – PLATE OF SADZA AND BEANS FOUND IN BEDROOM HUT
I
N a bizarre incident a 63-year-old granny’s home in Maloba line, Sipepa area in Matabeleland North’s Tsholotsho district was mysteriously gutted by fire after she saw mealie-meal being poured from a container by invisible beings suspected to be goblins. Fielder Gwazaza woke up to find her bedroom hut sprinkled with water leading her to report the matter to village head Solomon Gumpo. Gumpo attended the scene. A villager who declined to be named narrated the strange happenings to B- Metro. “The water which was mixed with some concoction was sprinkled on the floor. Shockingly all this happened when Gwazaza was sleeping with her two grandchildren aged five and nine years and they never heard anything,” said a villager. The unseen beings went a gear up in terrorising Gwazaza. The villager said on 30 July Gwazaza woke up to find sadza and cooked beans on the floor. “She had not cooked sadza the previous night and she had no beans in her homestead but she got the shock of her life when she woke up to find a plate full of sadza and beans placed on the floor. Again she informed the vil-
lage head,” said the source. When she thought she had seen it all a mysterious fire erupted from the air while she was sitting under the shade and razed her kitchen hut. “On 1 August at around 9am while she was sitting under a tree shade a mysterious fire erupted from the air and burnt down the kitchen hut. “She reported the matter to Gumpo who came and attended the scene,” said the source. On the same day in the evening, the source said, the strange fire appeared at her homestead and burnt down her bedroom hut. “The mysterious fire left a trail of destruction at her homestead as it burnt her wardrobe, bed and other property in her bedroom and all the clothes went up in smoke. On the following day she made a report at Sipepa Police Station,” said the source. The source went on to say on 10 August while Gwazaza was sitting under a shade she saw mealie-meal being poured on the ground. “It was a strange incident as she saw mealie-meal being poured from a container by invisible beings. In fear she again reported the matter to the village head,” said the source.
Security boss ‘petrified’ after eerie ‘ghost bride seen stalking building site’ A SECURITY firm boss has said he was left ‘petrified’ after claiming to have spotted a ‘ghost’ woman in a white dress stalking a building site. A photograph of the supposed ghostly apparition at the Birmingham building site has left many scratching their heads over whether it is genuine or a hoax. The eerie image baffled security bosses at the site on Sherborne Street after the ‘movement’ triggered motion cameras in the early hours of Tuesday, August 18. The vision is claimed to have been picked up by CCTV in the dead of night - but when security performed a full patrol of the area just minutes later they found it all clear. The security boss at the site said he struggled to go back to sleep as he was so creeped out by the apparition of the woman, who appears to be wearing a dress and carrying an object as she walks through the site in the city’s centre. Security staff were alerted after a motion sensor camera picked up movement and snapped the sinister image, reports Birmingham Live. - MIRROR
‘Lover used charms on me’
Trance exposes source of wealth THERE was drama in Chitungwiza on Wednesday when a woman fell into a trance before revealing the source of her wealth.
The woman, only identified as Locadia, claimed that prostitution was the source of her money which enabled her to buy a house in Zengeza 1. When H-Metro arrived at the scene, Locadia was saying that she has been involved in prostitution for a while. “I went to South Africa and did all sorts things. I was a prostitute and I stole money from a Nigerian and used to buy this house that you see.
“This stupid man (her husband) only loves money. He doesn’t even know how I got this wealth. He is evil.” “This house is not clean. Better to desert it. I am going, ichava dongo imba ino, and I hope it will be cleansed when I also get cleansed,” she said. “My feet are not clean. I am dirty. I need to be cleansed.” The woman went on to name other local men she has slept with. Some from the same street. “I spent three days trying to writed down the names of the men that i have slept with and I got tired. I couldn’t finish all of them,” she claimed. - H Metro
A 31-YEAR-OLD Mabvuku woman on Thursday exchanged unprintable words with her lover’s wife accusing, each other of using charms on the man. Rudo Rhoda Kamupondi received calls, messages and audios from Sharon Ndhlovu who demanded to to know why she had used charms on her husband Rangarirai Dzonya to affect his sexual appetite. Kamupondi, a tailor, claimed that she experienced back aches soon after their cellphone conversation with Ndhlovu suggesting that she had sought revenge. “I am still in a serious pain from the moment I ended my conversation with the wife of SOME were made redundant, others furloughed - it’s been a really tough time. One woman who struggled with finding freelance work in recent months thought things might finally be turning around after a potential employer reached out via text message. However she was left feeling “furious” and “freaked out” after the unnamed man revealed that he was hoping to pay her to spend some alone time with him. Creative producer Emma Thomas shared her thoughts on the matter in a post on LinkedIn alongside a screen-
the man I was dating for the past three months,” said Kamupondi. “My back and uterus (chibereko) are aching and I want to believe that I was bewitched because Dzonya’s wife phoned me accusing me of causing her husband to fail during sex. “To be honest I had several sex sessions with him at his workplace in Kamfinsa where he stays while his wife will be in Msasa where they live. “Dzonya was forced to disclose my contact numbers to his wife after he failed to have sex with her two times when she visited him at his workplace. “Dzonya must have been bedding several women since he is staying alone at his
work place and is no longer sure who exactly affected his manhood. “I am desperately looking for help to deliver me from pain I am experiencing if there are any either prophets or traditional healers,” said Kamupondi. Dzonya, a gardener in Kamfinsa, confirmed exposing Kamupondi to Ndhlovu after his manhood failed to erect during sex. “I fell in love with Kamupondi and we had sex that is why I suspected her of using charms on me to affect my sex drives with my wife,” said Dzonya. “My wife visited me two times at my work place where I stay and I failed to have power or even the manhood to erect that is why my wife
cornered me and I disclosed everything to her. “My wife is an ardent follower of apostolic faith churches that I do not suspect her to have used charms to revenge. “Haashandise mishonga ini ndini ndisingatoita zvekuchechi kwete kuti mudzimai wangu anoshandisa mishonga,” said Dzonya. Ndhlovu refused to entertain H-Metro when contacted for comment. However her audios and messages she sent to Kamupondi showed that she was convinced that the latter was the behind Dzonya’s in effectiveness on bed after engaging in sex with her. - B METRO
Woman ‘furious’ as employer uses phone number on her CV to send ‘vile’ messages shot of the very inappropriate conversation. In the first message, the employer asks if she’s still looking for work. She confirms she is and that she has “tonnes of transferable skills” and always gives 100% with her work. But instead of a professional reply, the person responds asking: “How would you feel if I paid you for some company and time of yours”. Definitely not what she
had in mind and definitely not ok! Speaking about the texts, Emma proclaimed: “I AM NOT AVAILABLE FOR SEX. “Anyone reading my CV will see I am a kick a**e creative producer/ project manager/creative not a sex worker! I am also f***ing furious. “I am so angry that anyone should try to advantage of the dire job situation right now in such a way. - Mirror

Feast of the Sacrifice By NOEL IYOMBWA
EID al-Adha ‘Feast of the Sacrifice’, is the last of the two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr), and considered the holier of the two. It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God’s command. According to Genesis 22:2, Abraham took his son Isaac for sacrifice. Before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, however, God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this intervention, an animal (usually a sheep) is sacrificed ritually. One third of its meat is consumed by the family offering the sacrifice, while the rest is distributed to the poor and needy. Sweets and gifts are given, and extended family are typically visited and welcomed. To commemorate this im-
portant occasion, the Muslim Social and Welfare Trust Zambia(MSWT) slaughtered cows and donated the meat and other foodstuffs to orphanages in the country. The Trust donated 100 kilo-

grams of meat at Chipata level one hospital, 50 kilogram at SOS Children’s Village, Kumbaya Orphanage and other institutions. MSWT coordinator Mubasshir Mehta said the Trust works with government of the day by being
part of the many activities in helping the needy in society. He said that the Trust has been doing this for the last four years with support from Hasene international a faith based organisation consisting of Turkish Muslims based in Europe and that it reached out to four thousand families in Lusaka. Mr Mehta explained that the Trust slaughtered the animals in early August but that due to the Corona virus pandemic there doing the distribution in phases and the Trust has targeted to reach out to five thousand families. Mandevu Member of Parliament Jean Kapata who witnessed the donation at Chipata level one hospital, SOS children village and Kumbaya orphanage thanked the organisation for gesture. She said that the donated foodstuffs would go a long way in alleviating poverty at the beneficiary institutions.

50 Cent slams n i s d r a w A y m Em t n a r d e h t u o m foul DJ Cosmo, Andie Stone rock Elation Clubhouse Party after ’Power’ snub By TERENCE MISELO
MUSICIAN Cosmas Chileshe famously known as DJ Cosmo aka The Dancehall Magician alongside party DJ Andie Stone were Friday night’s guest artistes for the Elation Entertainments Club House Party hosted live on Diamond TV and social media platforms. The show is an initiative by Diamond TV and Elation Entertainments to offer the general public an alternative source of entertainment in the midst of Coronavirus pandemic which has brought up restricted social gatherings. This show takes place on Fridays and Saturdays starting 22:40 hours. It is a party music mix with lots of fun and messages on the prevention of the Coronavirus featuring different artistes.
DJ Cosmo and DJ Andie Stone were Friday night’s guests and took the party to the highest dancehall limit. Andie Stone was the first to warm the decks by playing great music mixes to make him prove he is one of Zambia’s greatest mix DJs. He played all sorts of music including Zed mixes. The lad later introduced DJ Cosmo to some serious singing and vibing session. Cosmo was at his very best jumping on beat after beat with his great raga dancehall vocal abilities. He performed some freestyle before Andie Stone took him to a long ride of his own composition. It was amazing to see the two rock to songs like ‘ Get in Touch,’ ‘ Pressure’, ‘ Keys & Juice’ and the all-time favourite ‘She aah Bomb’. The show was simply fire and lasted for over an hour. Look out for Elation’s next artiste this Friday.
RAPPER 50 Cent has hit out at the Emmy Awards after his crime drama “Power” was once again snubbed on the shortlist for the annual ceremony. 50 Cent has slammed the Emmy Awards after his crime drama missed out on a nomination. The 45-year-old rapper - whose real name is Curtis Jackson - has hit out at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in a foul mouthed rant after his Starz series ‘Power’ was once again snubbed for the annual shortlist. Sharing a photo of a bare bottom on Instagram, he wrote: “OK here it is Emmy’s. My Black a** for your consideration to kiss. “F*** your organization I only care about NAACP awards. #bransoncognac #lecheminduroi (sic)” Despite proving a hit for the network since its premiere six years ago - and being popular with viewers and critics alike - ‘Power’ hasn’t translated that into Emmy success. The show - which starred the likes of Omari Hardwick, Naturi Naughton, Lela Loren, Lala
Anthony, Michael Rainey Jr. and Joseph Sikora - came to an end in February after six seasons, and it was never nominated for any prize during its long run. 50 Cent - who played Kanan Stark and also served as executive producer - previously issued a similar statement on the matter following the reveal of last year’s Emmy shortlist. Alongside a rundown of the programme’s ratings, he said: “The EMMY’s can kiss my black a** in slow motion. “F*** em I’m #1 They a bunch of Bengay my back hurt smelling a** old people anyway. LOL. (sic)” While “Power” has ended, Fiddy will again serve as executive producer on spin-off series “Power Book II: Ghost”. The show - which premieres in September on Starz - will pick up the story days after its predecessor’s finale. The sequel will follow Michael’s character Tariq as he looks to step out of his father’s shadow and navigate his new life despite pressure to save his family.

s we continue to live through the COVID-19 global pandemic, one of the questions on everyone’s minds is “How do we stop this from ever happening again?”. As with all problem-solving exercises, one must identify the cause before one arrives at the solution.
It is now common knowledge that the first reports of COVID-19 originated from a wet market in Wuhan, China. This is the equivalent of a bushmeat market where various species of wildlife are traded. The Wuhan wildlife market has since been closed and China has banned the trade in wildlife, but the damage has been done. To date there have been nearly 20 million cases of the disease worldwide and an estimated 700,000 deaths. Whilst the full extent of the health impacts of COVID-19 remains uncertain, the impact on livelihoods and economies is certain to be damaging. The standard ‘lock down’ response countries have taken to halt the spread of the virus has brought about an unprecedented freeze in economic activity. Never before have the world’s workers and consumers, been required to stay home and refrain from most of their everyday activities. The economic impact of COVID-19 in Zambia, a landlocked and resourcedependent nation was felt long before the first case was reported. A recent report by the Zambian Chamber of Mines goes as far as to forecast the most severe recession since the end of World War II. These are indeed worrying times. Looking back at the wet market in Wuhan, it is clear that human activity is to blame, particularly human involvement in the illegal wildlife trade. Many species of wildlife are known vectors of disease carrying agents. Viruses like COVID-19 naturally mutate and recombine, sharing different components to create new viruses. So, wildlife trading and meat markets, where multiple live species are kept together and butchered on the same surfaces, provide a perfect breeding ground for novel pathogens. In October 2019, Chinese researchers published a study documenting a variety of coronaviruses in pangolins. Another
INVESTING IN CONSERVING OUR WILD SPACES IS INVESTING IN OURSELVES
study showed the genome sequence of the novel coronavirus strain separated from pangolins was 99% identical to that from infected people, indicating pangolins may be an intermediate host of the virus. Until recently these endangered, scaly, ant-eating mammals were regularly illegally imported to Chinese markets. Pangolins are trafficked primarily for their scales which are falsely believed to have medicinal qualities. Their scales are made from keratin which is the same protein that forms human hair and fingernails. Thankfully the demand for
quarter of 2020 the number of pangolins being trafficked in Zambia reduced by 40%. Under the Zambia Wildlife Act No. 14 of 2015, the penalty for the illegal possession of a pangolin is 5 to 10 years imprisonment. As China and other Asian countries close their wildlife markets people hoping to profit from the illegal wildlife trade are not likely to gain anything other than prison sentences. A recent scientific study states that the cost of preventing further pandemics over the next decade by protecting wildlife and forests would equate to just a fraction of the estimated financial damage caused by COVID-19. In other words, prevention is better and cheaper than cure. Spending about $260 billion over 10 years would substantially reduce the risks of another pandemic on the scale of the coronavirus outbreak. A study by “COVID has killed hundreds of Dobson et al, published thousands of people and caused massive disruption to the econoearlier this year in the my,” says co-author Stuart Pimm, Science Journal estia conservation biologist at Duke mates that with just 2% University. “We’ve shown that of the estimated $11.5 there are lots of smart, relatively trillion that COVID-19 cheap things we can do now to reduce the risk of another catasis costing the global trophe like this one.” economy could prevent another pandemic. “COVID has killed hundreds of thousands of people and caused pangolins is likely to reduce massive disruption to the significantly as the govern- economy,” says co-author ment of China has raised Stuart Pimm, a conservation the animal’s protected sta- biologist at Duke University. tus to the highest possible, “We’ve shown that there are comparable to that of the lots of smart, relatively cheap Giant Panda. things we can do now to reduce the risk of another catastrophe like this one.” The researchers suggest it would cost around $19 billion a year to counter the potential profits from the lucrative wild meat market. Monitoring programs that might screen wild animals for viruses in potential hot spots would cost an additional $120 million to $340 million per year. Locally, investing more resources in wildlife conservation will not only prevent the illegal trafficking of Zambian pangolins but ultimately assisting in local and global development. A report by Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN)- Zambia illustrated that between 2010 to 2017,
international donor funding financed 73% of Zambia’s national budget towards environmental protection. Even more concerning is the fact budgetary allocation towards environmental protection remained at an average of 0.6% of the total national budget. Financing biodiversity conservation needs to become a priority for every Zambian, and this must be reflected by the financial resources put towards conservation. Historically wildlife conservation has not been well funded in Zambia. In the future, it should be recognised that investing in conserving our wild spaces and wildlife is investing in and protecting ourselves.

THE HIGH COST OF COVID-19 STIGMA ON WOMEN • The disease has left the world’s top scientists, political leaders, and the general population stunned.
• Confrontations became daily fare in their home as she slowly slipped into depression.
What you need to know:
W
hen Naomi Njoki came out of a gove r n m e n t forced quarantine at the Kenya Medical Training College, she thought her troubles were over. The 21-year old's optimism was buoyed by the fact that all the tests conducted at the facility had returned negative and that her quarantine was merely a matter of procedure as she had landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from Italy. As she would soon find out, her optimism was misplaced. She was now faced with a problem almost as big as having the disease itself- stigmatisation. People were avoiding
her like the proverbial plague, making her sink into hopelessness. Even her best friends stayed away and that rankled Naomi to no end. "I felt like an animal when I came out of the quarantine and the whole world seemed to reject me. I was left wondering how the situation would have been had I been positive," she says. That Covid-19 is a deadly pandemic is in no doubt. The disease has left the world’s top scientists, political leaders, and the general population stunned. Consequently, the government has been literally in our faces with the gospel of maintaining basic hygiene standards to beat the disease as they announce the daily corona roaster.
Fear, ignorance and underlying relationship issues are fuelling the shunning of those affected by Covid-19. Pressure on relationships But what is yet to get enough exposure is the stigma of those who either test positive; or the ones whose family members are affected; or those coming out of quarantine facilities or self-isolation. While stigma does not discriminate, many women have had to bear the brunt of the exclusion as their relationships are threatened or even destroyed. Neighbours turning against neighbours, family members against family members, and husbands
against wives is the new normal as people try to navigate the uncharted waters of Covid-19. For Nereah Wanjiku, 37, the coronavirus story begins after she suffered a major personal loss and traveled out of the country to try and recover. She came back just when the government had announced the forced quarantine for returnees. After spending almost 20 days at a quarantine facility, she headed home optimistic that the worst had passed. She was wrong. Her mar-
riage that had not been the postcard of a perfect union, deteriorated further as her husband accused her of trying to kill him by bringing the virus home. This even though she had tested negative. Confrontations became daily fare in their home as she slowly slipped into depression. Matters came to a boil one evening when the husband attempted to physically assault her after a quarrel. One of her sons, having had enough of the father’s quarrels stood between the two parents and dared the father to
lift a finger against the mother. In anger the man told the son, “I have always suspected you are not my son and today you have proved it.” Nereah says the look of pain in her son’s face is one she will never forget. After that, the young man insisted on a DNA test and both father and son were tested. The results showed the husband as 99.7 percent of the biological father. “I can see that their relationship is irredeemably broken and my son spends most of the time sitting alone and quiet. I don’t know what is going through his mind and my attempts to have him see a counselor have been rejected,” Nereah says. The shadow pandemic In what is now referred to as the shadow pandemic, Gender-based violence has risen, as Covid-19 restricts people to their homes and cut out means of livelihoods. Psychologist Gladys Mwiti says fissures in a marriage are fertile ground for perpetuating stigma. “When people who have issues in their marriage find an opportunity to stigmatise the other partner they go ahead and do it,” she says. She points out that ignorance was a big factor in the stigma around the disease. - DAILY NATION, Kenya
