COVID-19 ORDEAL THE moving story that we have published to day about a patient who is in isolation due to the novel coronavirus pandemic in Kabwe should jolt Zambians into reality that the virus is real. If anything, it should encourage them to take seriously all the medical preventive tips they have been getting from the Ministry of Health. The hitherto “it can’t happen to me” approach we have been subjected to from some people who have elected to disregard the health guidelines must stop. The patient’s advice is apt, that Zambians should heed Government’s directives on social distancing, wearing masks and staying at home among others because Covid-19 is real, dangerous and easily contracted. That is the plain truth that the Kabwe patient, now in an isolation facility has learnt, and wants to share his experience with the nation. The man is one of the Covid-19 patients admitted at Mulungushi University Isolation Centre in Kabwe and says the virus was dangerous because one couldn’t even tell where or how they got it. In his case, he believes he contracted the virus after a one-day visit to Lusaka’s Kabanana Township. “One day nasenda nobulwele, and it is that easy, sure,” he said. The patient said while in Lusaka he socialised with different people, including gatherings where people did not bother with social distancing and as a result it didn’t help him even though he was wearing a mask all the time. He thinks he could have got it from the surfaces or people he was touching. He said when he returned home, a few days later he started feeling unwell thinking it was the normal fever. He started with a headache and fever in the morning but by 18:00 hours his conditioned worsened as he started having difficulties in breathing. That is when he decided to go to a clinic where he was swabbed. He said he later tested positive for Covid-19 and was put in isolation where he has been for five days now. He says being in isolation was lonely especially for him who did not have a smart phone. “I am all alone in the room and only see a few people through the window. Medicines and food are only given at the door,” he said. A typical day for him starts with a bath, breakfast, medication, then a nap and more sleeping until lunch time. Then after lunch, I sleep some more, sit for a while and sleep some more. So it is a typical hospital room except there is no bedsider as we are used to. You are just alone and you cannot leave your room. He said he was very happy to be at the treatment centre because he has breathing difficulties especially in the night. “Pakupema kubikako effort, you really struggle, not the way we breathe normally. It is scary and I really wish people can heed the guidelines. I wish I had done so,” he lamented. The patient did not go out looking for the virus because as he explained, the Lusaka trip was just a casual outing because his friend was driving. The more reason that people should take the health preventive measures seriously – Stay Home. What is pleasing about the Kabwe patient though is that he appreciates the medical care he is getting, and is confident that he will get well. His message to the general public: Get tested for Covid-19. That is our appeal too to Zambians, accept the fact that Covid-19 is for real and follow the health guidelines.

SERVING WITH INTEGRITY

HOW ABOUT MAKING USE OF DRONE TECHNOLOGY?

By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE

CHINSALI Member of Parliament Kalalwe Mukosa’s thoughts on UPND’s use of the death of a health worker, Ian Mutambo who died in a road traffic accident while transporting CovidD-19 samples to gain political mileage portray an honest and realistic analysis of the opposition party’s repugnant political posturing stunts (“Don’t politicise Mutambo’s death, UPND told,” Daily Nation, May 5, 2020). However, it must be noted that UPND politicians – many of whom are educated – are individuals who have become disillusioned with Hakainde Hichilema’s continued failed attempts at Zambia’s presidency and have chosen to vent their frustration by smearing the names of their opponents with filth on social media platforms to derail the present government’s efforts in the fight against Covid-19 led by Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya who hails from Luapula Province. This is very important, considering the fact that the country seems deeply divided along ethno-political lines. While their activities portray UPND politicians as unrepentant atychiphobiacontrolled critics, mainstream media reports as well as public opinion in Zambia have shown that there may be inhuman and shameful dimensions to their actions over Mutambo’s death, rather than genuine grieving. This is against the tenets of our cultural heritage, which presupposes respect for the dead. The late Mutambo lost his life as he travelled on a bus from Kabompo that plunged into the Kabompo River. He was carrying Covid-19 samples for onward clinical analysis. Meanwhile, President Edgar Lungu lamented that proper logistical procedures with regard to samples transportation were not followed. Perhaps fearing the adverse publicity this was generating, he has since instituted investigations into the deviation from laid down procedural operations against Covid-19 that led to the death of the medical practitioner. This tragic incident got me thinking. Perhaps the mandarins at the Ministry of Health were so preoccupied with grappling with Covid-19 that they forgot to keep themselves abreast of the

operations and services of the Zambia Flying Doctor Services (ZFDS) before the Zambezi District Hospital laboratory technician died in a road traffic accident. Perhaps predictably, though, the solution was to co-opt logistical support from ZFDS which has been in existence for more than five decades – albeit currently needs unmanned aircraft systems – drones to effectively cover new trends in medical services. Was it a considered case of missed opportunity for ZFDS perhaps? The ZFDS is based at Ndola’s Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport. It was in 1965 when Dr James Lawless thought of the concept of aviation-based medical services, particularly to transfer medical personnel from advanced health facilities in urban areas to hard-to-reach rural areas. ZFDS had also been evacuating patients from rural areas to advanced hospitals in bigger towns and cities. The first post-independence government turned ZFDS into a state-run institution by an Act of Parliament in 1967. Using two Cessna Grand Caravans, one of ZFDS’ mandates is to deliver medical and pharmaceutical supplies to health centres throughout the country. The institution had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lusaka-based Medical Stores to deliver medical and pharmaceutical supplies. In its initial stages, the government-controlled medical aviation institution mainly handled cases of maternity and general trauma. However, in December 2014, ZFDS used a Cessna Grand Caravan to respond to a road accident involving 98 people, who were being carried in an overloaded truck in Mbala, near the border with Tanzania. The accident claimed 27 lives while 71 others were admitted to Mbala General Hospital. Outside of its core medical aviation activities, ZFDS has been licenced to ply the sky as a charter operator as operations in the rainy season are halted because soil on airstrips gets wet. Albeit, using smaller aircraft with the capacity of 10 passengers could solve the problems of short airstrips and wet ground at rural-based health centres in the rainy season. Another alternative is for the aero-medical institution to acquire helicopters that could respond to the ever-increasing road traffic accidents

and to continue with operations during the rainy season. In the over five decades of its existence, ZFDS has recorded significant achievements. However, use of drones by the aero-medical institution could deliver emergency medical supplies even during the rainy season when rains have made many roads impassable and airstrips unusable. In Malawi, drones are delivering medical supplies to remote areas quicker. The idea is being tested with the support of UNICEF. They aim to use the pioneering drone programme to transport crucial supplies such as blood transfusion kits, vaccines, malaria drugs, and antibiotics to their destination within hours. Delivery by drones is faster, easier, and cheaper than by other modes of transportation. Furthermore, drones can drop off supplies as well as collect laboratory samples. Ghana’s drone service makes on-demand emergency deliveries of 148 different vaccines, blood products and lifesaving medications to health facilities in the country, 24 hours a day. Over the past twenty-five years Rwanda has recorded transformation in various sectors such as education, gender equality, and technology among others. Health sector was not left behind. One outstanding achievement is how drone technology was made a key enabler in the health sector. It was in 2016 that Rwanda embraced this form of technology, a step that made it the first country in the world to commercially use drones to deliver medical supplies. And since then, healthcare has never been the same. Similarly, the delivery of life-saving blood has been taken to new heights by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) with the launch of a new drone blood delivery service. The drone has a range cover of over 100km. It is a highly specialised aircraft that’s being used to transport blood from blood banks to hospitals. As we take stock of ZFDS’ past decades, it is worthwhile to emphasise the point that the introduction of drone technology in the aero-medical institution would see enormous changes in the efficiency and manner in which healthcare would be delivered. It would make planning and execution of undertakings proficient, amid the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.

`UPND ABDUCTED ME’

From page 1

Mr Sikanyika said the UPND officials grabbed the phone from him and removed the sim cards so that he could not be contacted by PF after the resignation letter went viral on social media. “They came home and took me to the lodge where they forced me to sign a resignation letter. If you have noticed the letter is indicating Kanyala ward and the name of my ward is Mpungu, so you can see that I did not write the letter,” Mr Sikanyika said. He said the UPND was so desperate to have members in Isoka and are willing to do anything. Mr Sikanyika said he was paid K1, 500 and he was promised more when they received money from their Secretariat. He said the UPND have launched a campaign to destabilise PF in Isoka by instigating resignations. Mr Sikanyika said he had no reason to resign from PF especially that his ward was receiving a fair share of development. He cited the construction of the first ever secondary school in Nzoche, construction of a health post and provision of boreholes as some of the projects the PF had carried out in his ward. “I remain a loyal member of PF and ward councillor for Mpungu. My allegiance is to the President Dr Edgar Lungu, my MP Malozo Sichone and the PF,” Mr Sikanyika said. Police sources confirmed the abduction was reported by the PF district chairman Gerald Silwamba.

Mining think-tank formed By ROGERS KALERO

A TECHNICAL committee comprising the Finance minister , the Labour minister, trade union leaders , engineers, tax experts , civil society organisation and other stakeholders has been constituted to critically look at means and ways of sustaining the industry during this critical time of Covid-19. The committee will be on the Copperbelt to ascertain the challenges facing the mining industry and how both the government and the mining companies can work together to avoid job losses . Mines and Mineral Development Minister Richard Musukwa said government would not like to see a situation where miners lose jobs because the mine had been put on care and maintenance. He said Government would like to see the mining industry navigate through the difficult period of Covid-19 without miners losing jobs, but ensuring a sustainable and productive mining sector. “We have seen some mining companies proposing to put their companies on care and maintenance whenever they face various challenges, but as government, we take strong exception to such proposals because we don’t want job losses. “We want to pursue

dialogue with the mining companies and ensure that there are no job loses in the mining industry. We want the jobs of miners to be guaranteed. We want a productive mining sector which will protect the jobs of miners. This is why we have put in place a technical committee ,’’ Mr Musukwa said. Mr Musukwa also said the 90 days given to Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) does not mean that the mining company has to stop operations after that period, but it should be used to reflect on how best it would improve its operations . He said Government will equally be looking at Mopani reducing its operational costs while increasing its production and maintaining the labour force. Mr Musukwa said, one way of Mopani reducing costs was to stop dealing with foreign contractors and giving chance to local contractors who have the capacity to carry out various jobs. “Glencore must open its valves and start thinking of how it will continue to keep Mopani running with reduced costs. “On the 90 days given to Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) does not mean that the mining company has to stop operations after that period, but it should be used to reflect on how best it would improve its operations,’’ he said..

11 covid cases recorded By KALOBWE BWALYA

THE country has recorded 11 new COVID 19 cases out of the 667 tests carried out in the last 24 hours, Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya disclosed at a press briefing in Nakonde yesterday. Dr. Chilufya said seven are from Lusaka while the remaining four were picked from Kabwe. He disclosed that no positive case has been recorded in Nakonde out of the tests conducted from Chinsali health facility but that mass screening was going to continue. The cumulative number of cases in the country since the outbreak now stands

at 679, with 7 deaths, 183 recoveries and 489 active cases. Dr Chilufya said 31 patients including a 45-year-old have been discharged from the isolation facilities following their recoveries. He also disclosed that 4,193 people have so far been discharged after completing their 14-day mandatory quarantine period. Government has resumed total lock down of Nakonde to allow for mass screening and assessment of the Covid-19 situation in the border town with Tanzania. Dr Chilufya who is in Nakonde to spearhead screening and mass testing in the border town also visited the Health

Workers at Nakonde District Hospital, which has been turned into a quarantine facility for COVID-19 patients. Meanwhile, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- has delivered food supplies to Chinsali for the COVID-19 patients in isolation at Chinsali General Hospital. Muchinga Province Minister Malozo Sichone said more funds have been released towards the welfare of the patients in the insolation facility adding that Government was committed to ensuring that all the COVID-19 patients at the insolation facility in Chinsali are well looked after.

campaign. He however said that the disinfection of public places such as shops, bus stations and markets had also commenced in the border town. Mr Sichone added that Zambia police officers, immigration officers as well as Zambia Revenue Authority inspectors were working together to ensure that the lockdown procedure was properly followed. Some residents interviewed said compliance levels had improved soon after the first announcement of increased cases. A member of the health front-line team, who declined to be named, said the local people had realised the seriousness of the disease after the initial figures were released.

Govt applauds African Parks Network support By BENNIE MUNDANDO

GOVERNMENT says it is happy with support initiatives undertaken by African Parks (AP) Network through the Bangweulu Wetlands Management Board in Luapula and parts of Central Province. Chitambo, District Commissioner Catherine Kunda said Government needed the support of cooperating partners to actualise development especially in the new districts. Ms Kunda was speaking at the handover ceremony of five refurbished staff houses and an office block at an estimated cost of US$150, 000 at Mpelembe Camp to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) in Chitambo. Ms. Kunda said the infrastructure would not only benefit the department but change the profile of the new district. She said natural resources including wildlife are very important contributors to the much-needed national economy and in particular Chitambo where the Kasanka National Park and the Kafinda Game Management Area are found. And AP Bangweulu Wetlands Park Manager Jonathan Chisaka said his organiaation will this year be celebrating 20 years in Zambia earmarked to take over the management of 20 national parks in Africa. Mr Chisaka said the organisation is managing other national parks in Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and has a reason to celebrate not only the handover of infrastructure but the contribution to wildlife conservation on the continent. “The handover of the camp structure is to help improve the efficiency of operation of the DNPW policing of wildlife areas,” Mr. Chisaka said. Meanwhile, Senior Chief Chitambo called on the staff to look after the houses and property by undertaking regular maintenance of the structures.

‘Stock copper, gold not US dollar’ By NATION REPORTER

GOVERNMENT should stock up minerals such as copper and gold in the reserves which is the actual money instead of the US dollar which is just coloured paper being forced on them by international financiers, says the Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ). EAZ president Lubinda Habaazoka wondered why a country that had so much mineral resources was still having the US dollar in its foreign reserves when European countries such as Britain had gold. Dr Habaazoka urged Government to stop using the US dollar in its foreign reserves. He said in an interview on Hot FM radio that the International Monetary Fund and World Bank must stop enslaving other countries especially Sub Saharan Africa by forcing them to be using the dollar for everything including trade. “How is it that the strength of other currencies is dependent on the performance of the

dollar, you want to buy oil, you pay the dollar, selling your own copper you pay the dollar and importing goods from South Africa you also pay the dollar and this must come to an end,” he said. Dr. Habaazoka said Africa must also consider coming up with one currency which they would use for trade. “It is time Zambia stocks up minerals such as Copper and Gold in the reserves which is the actual money instead of the US dollar which is just coloured paper being forced on them by the IMF, World Bank and others,” he said. And Dr Habaazoka said political and tribal fights in Zambia were paving way for foreigners to loot resources especially minerals which they are using to enrich themselves. He urged Zambians to stop fighting and concentrate on developing one another. Dr Habaazoka observed that Zambians had prioritised politics and tribal wars at the expense of development.

Commonwealth tables Covid-19, Zambia makes intervention

HEALTH Ministers from 54 Commonwealth countries held the first ever virtual Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting ahead of the virtual 73rd World Health Assembly scheduled for May 18, 2020. The ministers met under the theme “Delivering a Coordinated Commonwealth COVID-19 Response”; reviewed and assessed progress against pandemic, shared good practice strategies, solutions and models and identified priorities for coordinated action. Minister of Health Dr. Chitalu Chilufya submitted the intervention to the 2020 Commonwealth Health Minister’s Virtual Meeting emphasing the need to strike a balance between responding to the pandemic and other services. In calling for improved availability of essential commodities and supplies such as Personal Protective Equipment Dr. Chilufya advocated for a pooling of resources through regional mobilisation as well as the expediting of procurement in addition to the promotion of local manufacturing and related quality assurance. “As there is so much we don’t know, research and innovation should be encouraged and supported to inform decision making,” emphasised Dr. Chilufya. “Zambia under the leadership President Edgar Lungu fully supports regional harmonisation and facilitation of cross border trade, while putting the health of our people at the centre” he added. And sharing her thoughts, Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland acknowledged the socioeconomic ramifications of Covid-19. She sounded a clarion call for “multilateral collaboration” highlighting that the economic impact of the pandemic had made it even more challenging for member countries to deliver social services within their respective jurisdictions. – REUTERS.

‘COVID-19 IS REAL’

By SIMON MUNTEMBA

ZAMBIANS should heed Government’s directives on social distancing, wearing masks and staying at home among others because Covid-19 is real, dangerous and easily contracted, a patient in an isolation facility has warned. Speaking to the Daily Nation, one of the Covid-19 patients admitted at Mulungushi University Isolation Centre in Kabwe, said the virus was dangerous because one could not even tell where or how they got it. In his case, he believes he contracted the virus after a one-day visit to Lusaka’s Kabanana Township. “One day nasenda nobulwele, and it is that easy, sure,” he said. The patient said while in Lusaka he socialised with different people including gatherings where people did not bother with social distancing and as a result it didn’t help him even though he was wearing a mask all the time. He thinks he could have got from the surfaces or people he was touching. “Yalifye one-day trip ku Lusaka. Umunandi twali nankwe akwete motoka so twalepitana ukumona abanensu. By IRVINE MUYUMBWA

GOVERNMENT says it is already repatriating people wishing to return to Zambia from various countries in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak which has rendered some of them jobless. About 170 have already be sent home by road using local buses. Some Zambians living in South Africa are reportedly stranded following the over eight weeks total lockdown imposed by that country’s government as a result of the surge in Covid-19 cases. According to a video circulating on social media, a group of youths are lobbying for the government’s support

Nalifwele face mask but maybe naisendele umonaleikata ikata,” he said. He said when he returned home, a few days later he started feeling unwell thinking it was the normal fever. The patient said he started with a headache and fever in the morning but by 18:00 hours his symptoms began to progress until he was having difficulties in breathing. He decided to go to the clinic where he was swabbed. He said he later tested positive for Covid-19 and was put in isolation where he has been for four days now. “If I could get the virus in one day of visiting Lusaka, what about those who stay there. It should send a strong message that the health guidelines in totality should be taken seriously. Covid-19 is real,” he said. He said he was very happy to be in the treatment centre because he has breathing difficulties especially in the night. “Pakupema kubikako effort, you really struggle, not the way we breathe normally. It is scary and I really wish people can heed the guidelines. I wish I had done so,” he lamented. The patient also said being in isolation was lonely especially for him who did

not have a smart phone. He said his typical day started with a bath, breakfast, medication, then a nap and more sleeping until lunch time. Then after lunch, I sleep some more, sit for a while and sleep some more. So it is a typical hospital room except there is no bedside as we are used to. You are just alone and you cannot leave your room. “I am all alone in the room and only see a few people through the window. Medicines and food are only given at the door,” he said. The patient also advised citizens to test for Covid-19, saying that early detection has helped him to pull through quickly and was hoping to recover soon. He said the symptoms had significantly reduced after being admitted in an Isolation Centre as they were well taken care of. He praised medical personnel for taking care of him and others and that so far he was 100 percent sure of recovering because of the treatment he was getting. He said he didn’t mind sitting alone in the room because this afforded him the best chance to get better.

State repatriates stranded Zambians

to be repatriated because life in South Africa has become unbearable due to the lockdown which has forced businesses to shut down. The youth lament that as a result of business shutdowns, they are unable to pay rentals for their accommodation and some have been forced to live onto the streets. They say Government should take the call as a matter of emergency because a lot more other Zambians are stranded in South Africa and want to return home as soon as possible. And when reached for government position on the

matter, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Chansa Kabwela indicated that Government is already repatriating people wishing to return to Zambia from various countries. Ms. Kabwela explained that the repatriation was however being done at an individual’s cost and that all those wishing to return are encouraged to engage the Zambian missions in their respective countries. She however said calls by those who may be stranded in South Africa and unable to meet their own travel cost are being followed up and a position would be given later.

‘Grumpy’ Sejani ticked off

By OLIVER SAMBOKO

THERE is no competition among cabinet ministers or infighting as insinuated to warrant dissolution of cabinet as insinuated by UPND `noise maker’, Ackson Sejani in his propaganda attack against the ruling party, PF national youth chairperson Kelvin Sampa has said. Mr Sampa has warned Mr Ackson Sejani to stop pocking his nose in the affairs of the PF by spreading lies that there were people within cabinet who were trying to undermine the President. He said it was unfortunate and shocking that Sejani was making such unwarranted claims aimed at misleading the nation that there was a rift in the PF Government when nothing of that sort existed. Mr Sampa said the ruling party was not aware of any competition among

some cabinet members to undermine President Lungu’s rule and that even if what Mr Sejani was talking had any truth, the President would have already known about it. “What Mr Sejani should know is that the Prescient knows whatever goes around and if it’s true that there people in his cabinet who are undermining him, he would have already fired them. The President knows everything, including the time Mr Sejani wakes in the morning,” he said. And Zambia Republican Party, president Wright Musoma has said the current cabinet is a winning team and therefore it’s foolish for the opposition UPND stooge to suggest that President Edgar Lungu should dissolve it. Reacting to senior UPND member Ackson Sejani who was quoted in one of the daily tabloids saying that President Lungu should dissolve cabinet to bring stability in the country,

Mr Musoma said it was total madness for the opposition party to start talking about dissolution of cabinet when the PF Government was on course in terms of delivering development to the people of Zambia. He advised the UPND to stop misdirecting citizen’s attention from the mass defections it was going through by bringing in irrelevant issues that had no substance to the people of Zambia. Mr Musoma said instead UPND talking about dissolving cabinet, the opposition party should start planning holding a convention to elect new patriotic and credible leaders that are going to help the country move forward. And a PF member Chrisantius Changwereza has advised Mr Sejani to stop misleading the nation that there are people within cabinet who are fighting to replace President Lungu in next year’s election because that was nonsensical lies.

‘I STOLE MAIZE BUT DIDN’T ASSAULT OWNER’ Maize thief reaps 3 By MULENGA MUSONDA

A 34-YEAR-OLD man has been dragged to the Choma Magistrates Court for stealing seven cobs of maize and beating up the owner. This is in a matter in which Chris Limwaya of Zambia Township is facing two counts, theft and assault contrary to sections 272 and 248 of Chapter 87 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence in the first

count are that Limwaya stole seven cobs of maize all valued at K14 the property of Mr Jackson Kafunya. In the second count, it is alleged that he assaulted Mr Kafunya and thereby occasioning him actual bodily harm. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred on March 11, 2020 in Choma. When he appeared for plea before Senior Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo, Limwaya admitted to stealing the cobs of maize but denied assaulting the complainant.

In admitting the theft, Limwaya, said it was hunger that led him to steal. But he disputed assaulting the complainant, saying it was in fact Mr Kafunya who roughed him up. Magistrate Mupemo then recorded a plea of guilty in the first count and that of not guilty in the second count. The matter was adjourned to June 1, 2020 for facts and commencement of trial after public prosecutor Pearson Chilumbu applied for an adjournment. Limwaya's police bail was extended.

FINALLY FARMERS ARE GETTING FAIR DEAL Dear Editor,

O

VER the last four months (July to October 2019), the price of Zambia's staple food (maize and mealie meal) has been on an upward trend. This is largely due to an open system allowing farmers to sell maize at market value. A healthy situation. Government on the other hand has continued to procure agricultural produce from farmers as per tradition (at slightly lower prices) to beef up food security through the Food Reserve Agency. This market value or cost reflective tag has led to an increase in mealie meal prices for the consumer. It's a bitter sweet tale of sorts in that the farmer is getting value with every drop of sweat and the consumer (mostly in urban areas has to forego certain

luxuries to meet the cost of nshima.) The PF government's open market policy has created a conducive environment for sector growth. For decades Zambia has enjoyed government subsidies on food and essential services such as electricity. With time, these subsidies have been reduced and in some cases withdrawn to ease the burden on the national treasury. The adjustment process is never seamless but is a necessary measure. We need to ask ourselves; "Who feeds Zambia?" "At what cost do they do it?" "Do they make a profit out of it?" The answer to each of these three questions will in turn determine whether or not the current price of mealie meal is justified. Zambia is largely fed by subsistence farmers most of whom are in rural or outskirt areas of

UPND crowds started way back in 2006

the country. President Edgar Lungu and PF government has tossed the coin and it is still spinning. The farmer's side of the coin is finally facing upwards. The farmer has for the first time sold his maize at the market price. This has put more money in his pocket. This has stirred a production movement and an increase in the number of persons putting hoe to ground. The right formula has been found and a balance struck. An increase in agricultural output will mean; *A reduction in prices of agro produce and increased exports. This in turn becomes a self-regulating or market driven sector of the economy. *An increase in industries manufacturing farming equipment, fertiliser and other inputs, *An increase in demand

for packaging materials such as sacks The ultimate result is new jobs, new income streams and a broadened tax base all with an aim of enhancing the nation’s quality of livelihood. The increase in mealie meal prices is therefore a blessing in disguise whose benefits will be appreciated beginning next harvest season. Every wise citizen with foresight should seize this moment and join the bandwagon of new farmers. The rewards will be worth it. KAY MUSONDA, PF Media.

Dear Editor,

CROWDS are not a determinant of winning elections. Most of those who attended the HH/UPND rally in Kitwe didn't come from the district. That was a UPND national rally. Epobapela apopene. Ba UPND Zambia yonse. Most of his members were ferried from Southern Province and a few from Western and other provinces. UPND and HH are trying to hoodwink Zambians that they have become popular on the CB. Using crowds are their old tactic. At last they always lose. They will cry even in 2021. HH cannot change anything in Zambia. After all they don't have a manifesto. They can't do what the PF government has done in seven years since 2011. Let’s get on with life Dear Editor, IF so, let's get on with life until we develop HERD IMMUNITY and remedial treatments; and until we learn more about this virus to the point that it becomes demystified and manageable... At least we know that it is vulnerable to soaps and alcoholbased sanitising agents when without a hostđ&#x;˜ˇ. So we can start by relentlessly disinfecting our surroundings and environment; and most importantly, Engineers and Scientists should develop effective and efficient (environmentally-friendly) technologies for doing so. We need to develop and integrate early detection systems into our social infrastructure; e.g. heat or temperature sensors in public spaces and buildings (this alone is a long subject for discussion on its own when you interrogate the Technologies involved and its implementation).

There is more that my wondering mind can engender; but for now that’s my proposal for the NEW NORMAL... Develop and democratize simple to use test-kits to facilitate self-administered diagnoses (like they have done with the AIDS virus). In view of this, Covid-19 based first aid can be developed, and people can be trained on how to self-diagnose the symptoms of this virusđ&#x;¤§. These self-tests can be carried out at every individual's convenience or whenever they have returned from the public in the comfort and safety of their homes. There is more that my wondering mind can engender; but for now that's my proposal for the NEW NORMAL... DISCLAIMER: đ&#x;¤” Some of these ideas may seem unrealistic, but I'm just thinking aloud and allowing my mind to run wild with imaginationđ&#x;™„... đ&#x;™?Please Don't crucify me... JOHANNESBURG - Around 28.4 million planned surgeries could be cancelled or postponed globally due to the new coronavirus pandemic, according to new research warning that huge backlogs risk “potentially devastating” consequences for patients and health systems. The study, published during the week in the British Journal of Surgery, modelled the expected number of elective operations that would be put on hold in 190 countries during a 12-week peak of Covid-19 disruption. Hospitals in countries grappling with major coronavirus outbreaks have postponed most non-emergency procedures to avoid putting patients at risk, redeploying staff and resources to the virus response. Researchers from the COVIDSurg Collaborative, an information sharing network of surgeons and anaesthetists in 77 countries, estimated that some 2.4 million operations would be cancelled per week in the period, or 28.4 million in total. They called on governments to urgently develop recovery plans to clear the backlog of surgeries and prepare for possible further waves of Covid-19 infection. “Cancelling elective surgery at this scale will have substantial impact on patients and cumulative, potentially

Tunisia eases lockdown as zero coronavirus cases registered in five days TUNIS - Retail shops and supermarkets reopened on Friday in Tunisia after the government announced zero coronavirus cases for the fifth consecutive day. In a statement published overnight, the health ministry also said that 217 patients still carry the Covid-19 virus, three of whom are being treated in hospital. But for the fifth consecutive day, no new cases were registered in the country which has declared 1, 032 cases of coronavirus, including 45 deaths, since March 2. With infections slowing, retail stores, open-air markets and supermarkets have reopened, but authorities are urging citizens to stay vigilant and respect hygiene measures. On Wednesday, President Kais Saied shortened an overnight curfew that has been in place since March 22. Tunisia started easing strict confinement measures last week. – AFP.

KALUSHA HOMEWORK

…CAS give Kalu two weeks to pay over K200, 000 on behalf of FAZ

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

T

HE Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has given football icon Kalusha Bwalya two more weeks to pay CHF11, 000 Swiss Franc equivalent to K210, 447 on behalf of FAZ for the case where he has challenged the association to be heard. Bwalya has appealed to CAS against the FAZ decision to stop him from contesting the association’s presidency. CAS had earlier urged both Kalu and FAZ to share the costs and pay CHF11, 000 each for the case to be heard, an amount w h i c h F A Z failed to pay as the

respondent. Failure to pay the advance of cost by FAZ has compelled CAS to call on Kalu as the appellant to pay FAZ’s share to cover the arbitration cost of the case. However, in his latest plea to CAS, Bwalya requested CAS to grant him two more weeks to raise the funds which should have been paid on May 15, a request which CAS agreed to. "Accordingly, on behalf of the CAS Finance Director, a final extension of two weeks of the applicant’s deadline to pay the respondent’s share of the advance of costs is hereby granted," counsel to the CAS, Sophie Roud said in a letter addressed to the two parties. "In view of the above, the hearing which was scheduled for May 19 has to be postponed and will be rescheduled after the payment of the advance of costs." Roud said failure to make payments within the

recommended date will result in the appeal being withdrawn. Meanwhile CAS has for the third time rejected Kalusha's request to have the case suspended indefinitely to allow other processes such as the planned meeting between FIFA and Zambian football stakeholders to proceed first and try and resolve various issues existing within football including the issues Kalu raised at CAS. CAS had last week dismissed Kalusha’s appeal for CAS to reschedule the oral hearing of the appeal which was scheduled for May 19 to another date due to restrictions in relation to Covid-19. However Roud said, Kalusha, as the appellant, and FAZ as the respondent will have to appear at the hearing which will be held through a video conference on a date to be announced after the full cost of arbitration is paid.

We’ll prepare for Olympics soccer piece’ By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) will put in everything to ensure the Shepolopolo are adequately prepared to prove that their qualification to the Tokyo Olympics is not by fluke, says executive committee member, Brenda Kunda. Kunda who is also in-charge of women soccer, said Zambia would not go to Japan to merely register as a participant but

to leave a memorable mark of a great footballing nation. “The world thinks Zambia has qualified by fluke. We don’t want to go there just to register that Zambia is one of the countries that has come to play the Olympics. “We want to show that we are a footballing nation. So we will ensure that we prepare adequately, like the way we prepared for the last two games against Cameroon,” she said. Kunda said the executive

was working towards increasing women participation by having leagues running in all the 10 provinces. “We need to make sure they all have league games that are running, because that is the only way to have the regional cups that we have introduced, championship play-offs and the Charity Shield competitive. We also want to make it a habit to appear at every Women Africa Championship,”

Kunda said. Zambia booked their automatic spot on the away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw against Cameroon. The Shepolopolo lost 3-2 away in Yaoundé before they shocked the Indomitable Lionesses 2-1 at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka. The games which were scheduled for this year, have been postponed to next year in Japan due to the coronavirus.

Zambia eyes US$150m IOC package By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA ZAMBIA is expected to benefit from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aid package of US$150 million to help its members prepare and support athletes for next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games. During a meeting last week, the IOC approved US$800, 000 to address the Covid-19 crisis which has affected sports operations across the 206 member-nations. IOC president Thomas Bachi said the committee was faced with unprecedented challenge to help stakeholders (affiliates) come out of the Covid-19 crisis. “The IOC, as the leader of the Olympic Movement, is playing a critical role in supporting its stakeholders during the Covid-19 outbreak. “To stand in solidarity with the Olympic Movement, it has also put together an aid package of up to US$150 million, from which the IFs, NOCs and IOC-recognised organisations can benefit,” “This funding is meant to

Lampard keen to extend Willian, Giroud’s contracts FRANK Lampard says Chelsea are looking into extending Willian and Olivier Giroud’s contracts if the season restarts. The pair are the two most notable players whose contracts are set to expire on June 30. The Blues head coach told Sky Sports News he wants the same squad until the season ends if there is a successful restart. “It is still uncertain if and when play will get underway. We have big players (out of contract) so that’s something I’m obviously looking at very carefully,” he told Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.

help them continue their mission to develop their sports, prepare for the Olympic Games and support their athletes. The IOC and its stakeholders are still going through the analysis process to assess the needs on a case-by-case basis,” he said in a press release. National Olympic Committee (NOC) president Alfred Foloko said whatever amount that Zambia will be given, would go a long way in aiding preparation of Olympicbound athletes. “We are yet to know how much Zambia will receive but once that fund comes in, we will inform our affiliates. The money will be given to federations that are preparing athletes for the Olympics. Zambia has so far qualified the women national football team, 200m African champion Sydney Siame, the boxing trio of Patrick Chiyemba, Stephen Zimba and Everisto Mulenga. Badminton, judo, swimming and volleyball are among the federations that are on the verge of qualifying athletes.

“The ones who are out of contract here have been great servants for the club, and actually have a lot of feeling for the club. “Of course they’ll be concerned about themselves, in terms of how training now is and if the preseason is a rush they’re going to have to make sure they’re allright. “So it’s going to have to be something we have to look at, hopefully we can make that arrangement so they can stay with us. “I would love the squad to look as it has been all season, but we’ll have to see how that works.” Premier League clubs will vote tomorrow over whether a first phase of training can resume, which would see players maintaining social distancing guidelines in small groups, in line with government restrictions to control the coronavirus. - SKY.

Weird News

Man dresses up in ridiculous costumes to embarrass his wife on Zoom calls’ CARA Fields, from Indiana, shared hilarious images of her husband Matt as he dressed up as a cowboy and Batman to embarrass her on her Zoom conference calls. If you haven’t worked from home before lockdown, you may be finding the transition pretty challenging. Like many others, Cara Fields and her husband Matt from Indiana have been adapting to their new work-life balance home-schooling their children and staying on top of their 9 to 5 jobs. But, Cara explained to Bored Panda that in order to give her - and her colleagues - a much needed laugh in these tough times, Matt started appearing in her Zoom conference calls dressed up in silly costumes. She says he’s always loved embarrassing her in public, so this was the obvious next step. She said: “When I converted our dining room into an office where my camera faced the dining room table, he saw a virtual opportunity to embarrass me during the pandemic.” At first, Cara’s husband’s started accessorising with items from his wardrobe. A cowboy hat here, hunting gear and Hawaiian shirts there - pretty subtle overall. But it wasn’t long before things started to escalate. She explained that their friends started sending him extravagant Halloween outfits in the post to keep up appearances - and they didn’t disappoint. One day he wore a Batman outfit and the next he was Where’s Wally. Cara started posting pictures of his outfits on LinkedIn and everyone thought it was hilarious. One person said: “This is the best” and then suggested they “dress up as one another and change seats.”

I USE MUTI TO STEAL – BUSTED THIEF CONFESSES A

39-YEAR-OLD man from Pumula East suburb in Bulawayo who allegedly uses muti to steal ran out of luck recently after he was caught in a house trying to steal and was beaten by residents who also drenched him in petrol in an attempt to burn him. Lindani Msimanga reportedly entered a house in Pumula East intending to steal at around 2am on Wednesday last week. Sadly, he ran out of luck when the owner of the house heard footsteps in

the sitting room. The victim screamed for help, alerting neighbourhood watch members who were patrolling in the suburb. The neighbours dashed to the house and caught him inside and took him to a police station. Residents joined forces with neighbourhood watch members and apprehended Msimanga. Drama ensued when the neighbourhood watch members were taking him to a police station. Some of the fuming residents punched him with fists

while some hit him with open hands. They also poured petrol on him to burn him but he was lucky to escape being burnt as the neighbourhood watch members quickly fended off a man who wanted to set him alight. When he was asked how he stole Msimanga said he was given a padlock by his traditional healer. “He told the angry crowd that was baying for his blood that he got muti from his traditional healer. Woman attacks ex-husband’s new girlfriend DIVORCE can never be an easy thing, especially with children involved. There are hurt feelings, bruised egos, and questions swirling about who is at fault. It makes it incredibly tough for both spouses to move on with their lives. It’s even tougher when a woman learns that her exhusband has a new girlfriend in his life. That is what happened when a woman filed a restraining order against her “new” boyfriend’s ex-wife alleging that she is “terrified” and “in grave fear” for her safety. In the restraining order obtained by B-Metro Mandipa Masuku from Bulawayo’s Malindela suburb claimed her new boyfriend Pride Siphambili’s ex-wife Itai Munyongo allegedly went into a rage when she found out she was now dating Siphambili. “I am the applicant in this matter and currently in a relationship with Pride Siphambili of Chinotimba, Victoria Falls. The respondent is Itai Munyongo and she is my boy-

friend’s ex-wife,” said Masuku. She claimed Munyongo has been harassing her despite the fact that she has been on separation with Siphambili for over a year now. “Upon discovering our relationship (with Pride Siphambili) sometime in January this year, she started insulting and threatening me. She continuously calls even at odd hours. “On 23 February she also came to my workplace and caused a scene when she attempted to hit me with a brick. I therefore pray that the court should protect me by granting a peace order against her,” pleaded Masuku.

Munyongo who is apparently not accepting that Siphambili had divorced her, didn’t refute her rival’s accusations. She said she was hurt that that Masuku “stole” her husband. “I am not opposed to her application, save to state that applicant took my husband when I was married to him. The reason why I was phoning her is because I was hurt,” she tersely said. In her judgment presiding magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu ordered Munyongo not to verbally abuse Masuku and visit her workplace as well as not to contact her on her mobile phone.

who reacted swiftly after hearing the screams from a house owner where the suspect wanted to steal and joined forces to apprehend the suspect. Lastly we would like to discourage members of the public from taking the law into their hands but they should let the police do their work.” Msimanga appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tinashe Tashaya last Wednesday and pleaded guilty to unlawful entry. The magistrate remanded him in custody to 06 May for sentencing.

Man impregnates stepdaughter A MAN from Nyika Village was ordered to pay three cows for having an incestuous relationship with his stepdaughter which resulted in the daughter getting pregnant. Tompson Manyena of Nyika Village under Chief Chireya in Gokwe had a relationship with his 20-year-old stepdaughter Dorcas Muza. Muza told her mother about the pregnancy after Manyena forced her to abort the threemonth pregnancy. A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the two had a relationship for close to three years without anyone noticing until Muza got pregnant. The two had a fallout when Manyena tried to convince Muza to terminate the pregnancy. “Manyena tried to convince his stepdaughter to have the pregnancy aborted but she refused. He then threatened to chase her away from his home. He advised her to go and look for her biological father if she decided to keep the baby,” said the source. “Due to pressure put on her by her stepdad, Muza told her mother about the pregnancy and that her stepdad was responsible. She also revealed that Manyena wanted her to abort the pregnancy but she refused,” said the source. “Muza disappeared the following day leaving behind a letter which stated that she was going to look for her biological father. The letter also stated that if she didn’t find her father, she would stay with her relatives where no one would force her to terminate her pregnancy,” the source added.

IN COVID-19 RELIEF By MUKWIMA CHILALA

WITH the elderly and old people being among the vulnerable groups to the spread of the Corona virus disease also called COVID-19, Nyapamucha Memorial Foundation , a non-profit organization has come to the rescue of the old people’s shelter in Matero by donating an assortment of protective materials to fight the disease. Memorial Foundation founder Dr Emily Sikazwe said that it was important to reach out to the old people at Matero Aftercare during the COVID-19 pandemic because the disease poised a great threat to the elderly in society . Dr Sikazwe was speaking at the hand over of the donated items at Matero Aftercare Centre on Friday . She said that the donation was made in solidarity with the Matero Healthcare Home for the elderly which was named after her mother Nyapachuma . She noted that the elderly home in Matero had a strong meaning to the Nyapachuma Memorial Foundation because the woman whom the foundation was named after was an old lady aged 89 at the time of her death. “ The name Nyapachuma simply means the one who holds the treasure of generational wisdom .As such, we feel that the Matero Af-

WITH a number of Covid-19 cases rising in Zambia, the call for social distancing and restricted gatherings is must. This has therefore affected many people socially, and weddings have not been spared. Marrying under Covid-19 has become a true testimony of ‘love will conquer all' as the usual pomp, splendour and glamour that comes with weddings is limited. It is interesting to therefore shade some light on one of the country’s newest couples under Covid-19. Hustler urges corporate support to artistes amid Covid-19 MUSIC and events promoter Isaac Siwale famously known as Hustler from Hustlers Events Management has urged corporate institutions to pump in more support to initiatives such as virtual shows and online entertainment gigs to help support artistes economically. He said in an interview that it is no longer a secret that most artistes have been negatively affected by Covid-19 as there are no shows to support their income. “ Artistes depend so much on shows and this is not happening. There are a lot of

them that have come up with initiatives online but need support from corporate organisations,” Hustler said. “ We need to use these same initiatives online to further spread information on Covid-19.” Hustler emphasised that corporate organisations must be aware of the cyber influence that artistes have and supporting them online will have positive impact on their social responsibility. “As Hustler Events Management, we will remain committed to helping artistes make a great earning from their art. Soon we are unveiling our online support system to artistes and we will be glad to work

ZAMBIAN Breweries has with deep regret and sadness announced the cancellation of this year’s 5th Edition of the Mosi Day of Thunder Music festival in Livingstone, which was due to take place on 23rd May. According to a statement, this is in compliance with the restrictions on large social gatherings put in place by the government of Zambia in order to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. “This was not an easy decision but we have to put the safety of our community first. Around the world, festivals, sporting events and community celebrations are being cancelled or postponed due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19; and ours should not be an exception. It is a collective responsibility to fight the spread of this pandemic and we trust that our consumers will understand this as a joint effort to protect our community.” said Zambian Breweries Country Director, Jose Moran. Zambian Breweries in collaboration with R&G Events will now

host a solidary event in Lusaka dubbed “Mosi Day of Thunder - Collabo Edition” on 10th October 2020 at The R&G Arena in Lusaka focused on raising funds to create relief to the city of Livingstone and the tourism and arts sector impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. “It is in our DNA to bring people together for a better world and recognize that the local and international tourism industry required significant assistance to rebuild and that is why we have decided to donate part of the proceeds from this event to this Pro-Livingstone Tourism and Arts Fund.” While this event is a corporate social initiative to generate funds to support the tourism industry of the vibrant city of Livingstone and home of the mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya, Zambian Breweries will maintain the promise of celebrating the best of local talent with local artists Mampi and Chef 187 joining the previously announced lineup featuring Slap Dee, Macky 2, Jay Rox, Yo Maps, Mic Burner, Magg 44, Natasha Chansa and Dope Boys including the country’s leading DJs. As an unfortunate outcome, the guest artist Sampa The Great

will not perform at the event due to a clash in her scheduled dates. However, South African guest artist DJ Prince Kaybee will still perform at the event among the exciting list of local artists. The sixth edition of the Mosi DOT will return to Livingstone in 2021 as per festival tradition and will endure to be a showcase of Zambian talent on the country’s biggest musical stage. Mr. Moran further urged the public to adhere to the measures put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus until it is safe to socialize once again. “We will continue to unite people through music and find ways to connect with the community during this trying time. Our upcoming series of Mosi online music experiences to be launched this week will be innovative and exciting activities to keep our consumers entertained while they stay at home” he added. Ticket refunds for those that bought tickets for this year’s Mosi Day of Thunder edition for Livingstone will be available at Computicket in Shoprite outlets, starting Friday 15th May, 2020. COPPER BELT based musician Frank Chirwa popularly known as Afunika has described George Mulowa aka Shimpanzi as an artiste who had alot to offer to the Zambian music. Speaking at the house of mourning on Friday, Afunika said that late Shimpanzi was one of the humble artistes who worked with him very well. He said that he worked well with the artiste and that he had alot of potential and was a good person. And fellow musician Chikowise described Shimpanzi as a down to earth person. He said that the late Shimpanzi was a good person to everyone especially fellow artistes he worked with. "Shimpanzi was a brother

gether I can only say rest in peace my brother I love you I will surely miss you ,I don't know what to say,"he said. Another artiste Madaliso Phiri popularly known as Dalisoul said that Shimpanzi was a brother and a friend to everyone. Shimpanzi who was put to rest yesterday at Mitumbi Cemetery died last week after an illiness. He was the artiste behind some of the greatest hits of our times. Some of the songs he worked on are; “Bushe ndine gong’a” a song he collaborated on with Uncle Ja, “Nkuku na Nkanga” a song he wrote for fellow artistes Organised Family and many more. In the wake of his untimely demise, many artistes such as Wezi, Organized family, Slapdee, and many more took to their social media to pay their tributes.

POACHERS: A DANGER TO PUBLIC HEALTH

Illegal hunters and traders pose risk to public health as they expose themselves and others to zoonotic diseases such as COVID-19 Dr. Kata

mpi “Poach e first con rs are the associa tact of wildlife te disease d zoonotic s mostly b , as they animals utcher the inhuma in the most n exposin e manner, infectio g themselves to us agen ts”,

W

HENEVER there is an outbreak of a new infectious disease, such as the current Covid-19 pandemic, we are quick to identify the animal or species that hosted the virus. However, we pay little attention to the role people who deal in illegal wildlife products play in causing the “species jump” and spreading zoonotic diseases. Poachers illegally hunt in national parks, game management areas and private game farms. As a result, they are always fearful of being spotted by someone or being caught by village scouts or wildlife police officers. This means they have to do their business in a hurry, ignoring safety measures. Tracking, capturing, handling, sometimes basic field butchering, and transporting of the carcass involves contact with potentially infected meat. Butchering (opening, cutting, dressing, and preparing the carcass) is obviously high risk for

bloodborne pathogens. “Poachers are the first contact of wildlife associated zoonotic diseases, as they mostly butcher the animals in the most inhumane manner, exposing themselves to infectious agents”, says Dr. Jackson Katampi, who is Senior Veterinary Officer at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife – DNPW. “Once they return to their communities, they become carriers and might transmit the pathogens

to susceptible individuals”, he adds. According to Dr. Katampi, there is an increased risk of spreading infectious diseases when illegal wildlife products like bushmeat exchange hands, from poachers to sellers and finally to consumers. “Poachers sell wildlife products that have not undergone any inspection by veterinarians. This significantly increases the risk of them distributing

infections.” We must therefore recognize that people who handle illegal wildlife products, that is poachers, traffickers and local sellers, are as dangerous to public health as their illegal products. Apart from Covid-19, which has devastated global health systems and economies, Dr. Katampi identifies two local zoonotic disease outbreaks that are linked to improper handling of wildlife. “There are human anthrax cases that

result from consumption of wildlife products, like hippo meat in the Eastern Province. Another example is rabies in the Kafue ecosystem, which is coming from domestic dogs being used illegally to hunt in the Kafue national park.” His caution to members of the public is threefold, “Avoid buying bushmeat or any wildlife products from illegal or unverified sources, only buy from sources approved by DNPW and report any suspi-

cious trade in wildlife related products.” About 60% of all known human infectious diseases are zoonotic and transfer from host animals to humans through direct contact with wildlife or through consumption of infected wildlife products like bushmeat. Without the human factor, often poachers and illegal bushmeat traders, many zoonotic disease outbreaks in humans are preventable.

Whiteson talks Patriotism Pioneers bemoan political divisions new single By TROY MUKUPA

WE need to allow God’s change to take place in us, says Whiteson in his brand new single ‘Ima Lesa’, produced by Richard Zulu at Gospel Press, Miseshi Natwange in Kitwe and it features Damarius. Born Whiteson Ng’onga in Chingola on 26 August of 1986, he did his primary education at Nakatindi Primary school and later went to Maiteneke Secondary School. “My love for music started way back. I was only 15 years old when when the spirit of God convinced me that singing was actually my calling,” says Whiteson. “I have been a member of the Praise team which helped me to start writing and composing songs. While

with Kodesh Worship team, we did an album called ‘Wamushilo’ and another album called ‘Nangeni Inshila’ with the El-shadai praise team,” Whiteson said. Feeling confident enough after composing some songs, he decided to go solo and has so far done three songs with ‘Ima Lesa’ already receiving fair air play on some local radio station. “ ‘Ima lesa’ is a song that talks about allowing the change of God in our daily lives. In Psalms 139 the Bible says God knows us inside out and in Jeremiah 29 the Bible says God’s plans are not to harm but to prosper us. It’s importance that as we go through life, we need to allow God’s change in our daily life if we are to grow both spiritually and mentally,” explained Whiteson.

IT’S unfortunate and disappointing to see how political players are dividing the country instead of being in the forefront in helping the government of the day to fight Covid-19 with one voice, national chairperson for Patrotism Pioneer Zambia Frank Chanda has said. Mr Chanda said that people should show patriotism to win the battle against Covid-19 by taking national development interest first. He said that politicizing Covid-19 will continue to trigger an increase in the number of cases as this will hinder people who

mighty fall victim from getting information that might keep them safe. Mr Chanda said that fake information arising from political propaganda will mislead people and make them vulnerable to the virus by not knowing exactly what to follow. “Let’s not divide people’s minds, having one source of information will help in the fight, my appeal to the opposition is to help educating and sensitising the Zambian citizens unlike to politicise,” he said. “The best vaccine at the moment is to stay united both opposition and party in government during this trying period by not politicizing any event or

activity arising from Covid-19 related. This will help people stay safe with right information.” He encouraged the nation to support measures recently put in place to curb the spreading of the virus by the President, Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu.“We are at war with the pandemic, let’s not bring war within war by politicking statements announced by the Ministry of Health and National Address by giving people more to think about and instilling fear a about Covid-19. Let’s embrace love, peace and unity by taking patriotism at the center of the Covid-19 in order to win together and celebrate together,” said Chanda.

Up-close with Luanshya Mayor Nathan Chanda By TROY MUKUPA HE was only 26 years old when he was elected as Mayor for Luanshya making him the record holder of the youngest Mayor ever-elected in Zambia. Nathan Chanda today leads the mining town to which he hopes to transform into a viable municipality as his current five-year term expires in 2021. And as if to prove the saying correctly that youths are the future leaders, he also holds the position of Copperbelt Provicial Chairperson under the ruling Patriotic Front Party. This is a position he holds diligently as seen from his appetite to work for the good of the people both as Mayor and provincial chairperson. The Daily Nation Lifestyle caught up with him to share his journey and motivation both as a family man and Politician. TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHO REALLY NATHAN CHANDA IS? My names are Nathan Bwalya Chanda the last born of Mr Raphael Mwamba Bwalya, a former miner and Mrs Annie Chiluba Bwalya, a house wife. I was born on the 5th of February 1985, at Roan General Hospital. I did my primary schooling from Grade one to seven at Makoma Basic School. For my Junior Secondary, I went to Chaisa Middle Basic School and later completed at Roan Antelope High School. People think I had a privileged smooth upbringing but the truth is I fought my way up to be where I am today. Its about having a positive mind set towards your future. I remember when my father got retrenched from the mines in 2001, he gave me K300 kwacha from his terminal benefits and with that I decided to turn it into an investment. My older siblings got more shares from our father’s benefits. The eldest got K500 while the second walked away with K400. With my K300 share, I started a booth in Roan and later I moved into town where I was selling talk time as an agent of mobile phone providers. I later graduated into renting a shop. From there, I decided to build my own shopping mall where we have shops which are on lease. WHAT MADE YOU TO JOIN POLITICS? Joining the Patriotic Front Party is a cause I shall forever hold dearly. I joined politics with a view to contributing to the positive change the country needed because the then ruling party MMD, had lost direction. I remember due to my height, people used to call me FTJ in reference to our late second Republican President, Frederick Chiluba who was also short, may his soul rest in peace. I joined the Patriotic Front (PF) in 2003 and in 2010 when we had a by-election, I expressed interest to stand but I wasn’t given an opportunity for so many reasons. I accepted the outcome and gave my support to Mr Adam Zulu who was picked of which we went flat out

to campaign for him and he won. In 2008, I was elected PF Luanshya District Youth Chairman and was later elevated to Provincial Vice Treasurer the following year before becoming full Treasurer a year later. I held the Treasurer position until 2011 when I became Copperbelt Province Youth Chairman. As we were heading for the 2016 general elections, I applied for adoption to contest the Roan Constituency Parliamentary seat on the ruling party ticket. The position was also being challenged for by the then Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili who was hoping to recontest the seat for a third consecutive five year term. The situation was later resolved by the Central Committee and I was later adopted to stand as candidate for Luanshya Mayor of which I stood and won the seat, occupying the Mayoral seat for the second time. HOW DO YOU SHARE TIME BETWEEN POLITICS AND FAMILY? I am married to Chisoswa Nachilya with whom I have three sons Mwamba, Chanda and Kapaya, and despite politics getting most of my time, I have always had time for them. It’s not easy but the key ingredient in making this seem easy is I am married to a wife who also understands politics very well. She understands that as much as I’m a family man who should have time for them, I’m also a political man who also owe my time to the people who trusted me to be in the positions I hold. MESSAGE TO THE YOUTHS? One thing I can advise is to never say no to personal development and never say never to success. It all starts with your mindset. When you tell your mind that this you can’t, then the o u t come will be as to what your mind had set. Positive thinking is key to success.

The Ordinary World

By Batuke Aaron Mwanza

T

IM Proudfoot was enjoying his stay in Zambia. He and his family had been in the country for more than a year. As Aussies who were born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, he and his family didn’t have any problems settling or adapting to the Zambian weather as the hot and arid weather conditions of Perth in particular were almost similar to most African countries like Zambia. Proudfoot, a 42 year old mining engineer came to work in Kitwe on a five-year contract as an expatriate from Perth and working in a Copper belt town like Kitwe often reminded him of his native town Perth which is also a mining city. During his free time, Proudfoot loved an outdoor life of visiting game parks and tourist resorts with his wife Cathy and only child and son Andy. Other than wildlife and tourism resorts he visited, Proudfoot was also fascinated by the traditional ceremonies and cultural dances of Zambia. He and some workmates would visit traditional ceremonies in rural areas as sometimes as a field worker his job involved exploring rural and remote areas for natural minerals and precious stones. It was while he was in the remote areas where he witnessed a lot of traditional ceremonies and cultural dances and he started following them with interest. He would record some of them and send the videos to his friends and relatives who have never been to Africa. When his Zambian workmate and friend Mateyo Ngoma told him about the N’cwala ceremony from his Ngoni tribe in the Eastern Province which he would soon be attending, Proudfoot was very excited and asked Ngoma several questions about the ceremony before informing him that he would love to attend the ceremony as well. And when the ceremony commenced, the duo attended. The N’cwala is an annual traditional ceremony where the Ngoni people come together during the last weekend of February to pay homage to their paramount Chief Mpezeni and God for the gift

While he was enjoying the ceremony at Mtenguleni village, Proudfoot was also interested in the drums traditional dancers where playing. He loved collecting and buying cultural trophies like brace-

lets, beads, wild animal sculptures and paintings and was looking forward to add traditional drums to his collection. He had spotted some traditional drums in Chipata which he was intending to buy after the traditional ceremony but on his way after the ceremony was over he came across a

man who had two big drums in the market and was selling the drums well cheaply. When Proudfoot and Ngoma asked the man to play the drums, the man called his wife who was nearby and asked her to play the drums for the prospective customers. “Why can’t he do it himself, he doesn’t know to play the drums?” Proudfoot asked. When Ngoma interpreted to the man and his wife, Proudfoot was saddened when he was told that the man was actually paralysed and can neither play nor carry the drums. After his wife played a few beats to show Proudfoot and Ngoma how to play the drums,

Proudfoot wasted no time and bought the drums. “Did I tell you that my name actually mean drums or a drum?” Ngoma said to his colleague. “Oh really? Proudfoot asked as the two men laughed while they took the drums to the waiting car. Back to his residence in Kitwe’s Riverside, his wife and son were very happy and excited about the drums. Proudfoot took photos of the drums and sent the photos and videos of him and his family playing the drums to his family and friends in Australia. However, it did not take long for the Proudfoots to notice and hear peculiar things

about the drums. During the very early hours of the day around 01- to 02 hours, they would hear the drums playing in the spare bedroom where they were being kept. But when Proudfoot or his wife went to the room to check, they found no one playing the drums and the drums were intact. At first they thought it was their seven-year-old son playing pranks on them as Andy was a naughty boy who was capable of doing anything of that nature but they came to realise that the beating and tunes sounded too professional for a kid who was not even a native. At times they would even hear a voice of an old African woman singing behind the tunes of the drums. Proudfoot talked about his experiences with the drums to his friend Ngoma. “It’s probably just hallucinations, maybe you are just yet to acclimatise to African culture” Ngoma said to him. Proudfoot just shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe, I hope so.” he responded. Back home around midnight while they were fast asleep, the sound of drums beating continued with a voice singing. Cathy got up and left her husband asleep. This time the noise was so loud and she could hear clapping of hands and feet dancing. She thought it was Andy because he was playing the drums a few hours ago. “Andy it’s late, go to bed now,” she said as she opened the door. She was shocked and horrified to find an old black woman dressed in a full chitenge material and headgear with traditional bracelets on both hands playing the drums. She turned to face Cathy and shouted at her saying.. Bweza ngoma zanga (Bring back my drums). Cathy screamed in horror. TO BE CONTINUED.
