2 3 Talk of the town | Spring Issue

Hello Members,

Can you believe that we are already in the last quarter of 2022. Once again, we have had to deal with the effects and new cases of Covid-19 which has affected almost everybody over the past two years. I thank our Management team who have worked hard in this area to provide great service and to keep our Club operating under sometimes difficult times.

Having said this, we have been operating as normal as possible and the Board and Management are working on several new ideas to take our Clubs well into the future. In my last report I touched on the ILU Development at Reservoir Road and said I would update you when I had further information on this.

I told you we had been working on this project for over 5 years, but it is actually over 7 so you can appreciate how overwhelmed I was when our CEO, Morgan Stewart phoned me and said he had just received notification that our DA for this development had finally been approved. I actually cried “tears of joy” because now our dream and the Boards legacy could be achieved.

The rest of the Board were equally as excited when they heard. I thank the past and present Directors, Morgan Stewart and the Senior Management team for the hard work and perseverance that has got us to this point. There is still work to be done but now we can see the ultimate result coming. Thank you everyone.

I have received heart-warming comments from many of our members regarding the great entertainment we are providing for your enjoyment. We have had to limit numbers on several shows to help keep you safe, but the shows have been exceptional. There are too many to list but if you have attended any of them, I know they were worth your visit. Take the time to check out the Entertainment Section in this journal and see what great shows are coming but please book early to ensure your seat.

Several Directors have attended functions in the Club recently including Blacktown City Lions, Ponds Lions, Rotary Changeover Dinner, Inner Wheel and Lantern Club. These groups do so much to help the needy and community and I take my hat off to all of them for their efforts.

I must congratulate Maureen Fry as she has been President of the Blacktown Lantern Club for 23 years and with her committee and members has done a remarkable job raising money for the Institute for the Deaf and Blind Children at North Rocks (Next Sense). Maureen stood down as President in July but has elected to stay on as Vice President along with Helen Thompson. Lorraine Langford has been elected as new President. Congratulations to all the Committee.

Jack Miller and I attended the Cumberland Servicemen’s Wreath Laying Ceremony at Blacktown RSL in July. It was an honour to be invited and I was touched by the service. The Blacktown Brass Brand provided the music, and the tears came again with the Last Post as we remembered our Veterans, service people and families within our Defence community.

Each year we hold two very special Club events which are very close to my heart. These are our VIP Xmas lunch and Quarter Century Night. At the VIP Xmas lunch we honour our Old Tin Shed members and members who have 50 years or more membership to our Clubs.

Last month we held our Quarter Century Night for the first time in 3 years due to Covid. This year we invited the 384 members who were eligible for this intake. 125 accepted with partners giving us 250 attendees. This gave us the opportunity to mix with them and thank them for their support of our Clubs.

Our main Club hosted the Blacktown City FC last month, where several Directors attended. It was an interesting night where I was further educated in soccer from the MC Adam Peacock and special Guests Allen Stajcic, Andrew Redmayne and John Crawley. Bob Turner CEO of Blacktown City FC put together a great night. Workers sponsors the Women’s Team, and we are proud to support the participation of women.

If any of our members know any Ladies that could be interested in joining our Ladies Outdoor Bowls at the Sports Club, they would be very welcomed. Bowls is one of the great ways to meet new friends and enjoy yourself and the company on competition and social days. Contact Anthea 0450 021 245 for more information.

If there any men or ladies interested in Indoor Bowls, it is held each Monday (Frank 0428 842 497) and Wednesday (Sylvia 0402 810 955) up on Level 3 of the Main Club and maybe this could be a good opportunity for you also.

Exciting times are coming for all our Clubs and our members hence my latest sign off. There will be more information in my next journal report.

On behalf of the Board of Directors our deepest sympathy to our members who have lost loved ones and friends during these difficult times. Our thoughts are with you.

CEO’S REPORT

Hello Members,

I am proud of our Management Team and all our Staff for being at work each day and continuing to deliver great customer service, great experiences, valued products and community services to you, our Members, in what is easily described as one of the most challenging times we’ve ever seen in the Club, Hospitality and many other service-related industries.

You continue to join me in appreciating and thanking our staff for their efforts. This motivates us all to keep trying to exceed your expectations each day that we come to work in our Clubs and in our community. Our people are our backbone, and I am thankful to them for their commitment to you.

Following on from Kay Kelly’s report, the Board and I are immensely proud to deliver to you the long-awaited Independent Living Unit (ILU) development consent to allow your Club to build 480 ILU apartments and a 160-unit Residential Aged Care Facility under the now public banner of Parkside Lifestyle Community at Workers Sports.

Over 300 registrations of interest have been received to date. This confirms to us that the ILU development is valued in the community by our Members who look to us for opportunities to downsize into modern contemporary apartment living with services and products likened to a cruise ship that never leaves the dock, where you can do as little or as much as you want each day.

Building senior-living housing has been a gateway for us to review our Club Group with a wider lens of our Community and the services and facilities that we provide. This has helped us really appreciate that we have a long, proud history and tradition of being many things to many different Members. The Parkside Living Community is creating an opportunity for Members to live with us in their older years and be part of a new lifestyle as a result of being a Member of our Clubs.

I am very proud to let you know that to recognise and celebrate the generational changes in your Club Group, that we are rebranding from the ‘Blacktown Workers Club Group’ to the ‘Workers Lifestyle Group’. Workers Lifestyle Group will be the main business group name. Each venue will still retain their Workers identity as known in the community as Workers Blacktown, Workers Sports and Workers Hubertus. The red W has been modernised. However, our other traditional icons remain.

Our Mission, Vision and Values remain. Our Vision – to provide venues, activities and lifestyle options that enhance and benefit our community – is being vibrantly brought to life by these changes.

This rebranding is a lengthy process and we expect that this will take around 18 months. We have begun with changing the logos on our carpark signage and will eventually change all the logos on the uniforms of our summer and winter sporting bodies. We will reach out to the sporting bodies to give them a hand where they might need it in this process.

We are enormously proud of our brand and our identity - who we are and what we do. This update to our brand and logo is exciting and I’m looking forward to our future.

The renovations at Workers Blacktown are completing with the Blue Gum Café looking to open in early November. A new menu, furniture, carpet, tiles, and kitchen equipment amongst other new improvements will help make Blue Gum our primary convenience food offer, with a menu that offers fast, fresh, healthy and delicious club favourites and new CSIRO based menu items for anyone looking for a value offer every day or otherwise when time is short.

Plans progress at Workers Hubertus and I will provide more information on this in our next journal as our 25 acres at Luddenham have been recognised for uses associated with Registered Clubs. This leads us to draw comparisons on how we can replicate our existing products offers and land uses at Workers Sports such as the Club with Conference, Events, fuel, and food offers for example.

Health is very important to us all and we have begun to focus our attention onto the scourge of diabetes and its stronghold in Western Sydney, and the Blacktown Local Government Area particularly. We are working with Western Sydney Diabetes on this front and looking to increase ease of access to testing and linking into the GP network for consultation and assistance.

We believe that we can make a difference and your Club is happy to do what we can, where and when we can.

Our plans for the future of our Club Group are continuing ahead strongly, as you would expect. The Board and Executive Management will hold our strategic and legacy planning sessions in October, where we check milestones and progress of the plans underway while looking to creating a legacy for the future generation of our Members.

Meet Chef RAY

PAGALANAN

“CHEF RAYYYY!” This is the way many staff start their conversation with Chef Ray followed by a classy fist bump.

The reason behind this is Chef Ray considers everyone family, in fact the first question we asked Ray was “What is your favourite memory of working at The Workers?” His response was simple, yet sweet – “My favourite memory happens everyday when I come into work because everyone I have met over the years are not just my friends, they are family”.

Ray started his journey here at Workers back in Autumn 2005 as a grill chef in Hi-lights Revolving Restaurant.

For many years Chef Ray worked in the prep kitchen. If you have ever ate at a function/event at any of our venues, it is likely your dish was prepared by Chef Ray himself!

Recently promoted to Sous Chef, Chef Ray gets even more excited as he prepares each dish, he

enjoys seeing the smiling faces after patrons take their first bite.

Chef Ray has mastered a variety of dishes from around the world and uses those skills to come up with new menu items that you see and eat each day!

“I am especially excited to see the new Blue Gum Café open at Workers Blacktown”

After 17 years of service to the Workers, Chef Ray had a few words for aspiring chefs – “Being a chef takes hard work. You must be on time but also flexible with time and there is especially no time to have no time”. – Chef Ray, Sous Chef of Workers Blacktown.

Meet Our Welfare Team Workers CONNECT

Our Members, Our People, Our Community.

On the 26th of June 2021, our Clubs closed their doors for 15 weeks due to the impact of COVID-19. After the 1-year anniversary, we have looked back on this through our “#shutdownaversary” campaign and recognised those within our community who continued to provide support and services.

Here at the Workers Lifestyle Group, we reflect on the importance of our members wellbeing during and since the closure. We are proud of the strong foundation Harold Becker has laid to connect closely with our members.

With close to 50,000 members and our ongoing work to support those impacted by family & domestic violence, we are pleased to announce that we will be expanding our welfare support capacity.

We welcome Tina Maamari, who will be joining Harold and our Welfare Team, to provide our members and guests with support.

R U OK?

That question could save a life.

R U OK? Day is a national day of action. Where we remind each other that every day is the day to ask “R U OK?” and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling in life.

On Thursday, the 8th of September, join us for cake, coffee and a conversation to help spread the word that it is okay to not be okay.

Our Welfare Team, here at the Workers Lifestyle Group, are committed to asking that question of R U OK? Every day! If you ever just need a chat or want to sit down with someone, stop in and say hello to either Tina or Harold.

Dementia Support

Dementia Support Group is held at Workers Blacktown. The Support group meets fortnightly on a Thursday from 10.30am. With relevant activities to assist people going through dementia. Carers are welcome to attend.

Carevan

As a part of this Years Club Grants, the Workers Lifestyle Group (WLG) issued over $40,000 to Carevan to purchase a brand new truck/van equivalent to pick-up, transport and deliver essential items to the disadvantaged in and around the Blacktown LGA.

In addition, the WLG also funded Carevan with over $6,000 to buy supplies, food and drinks from the foodbank as part of their weekly support.

Ceo and Co Sleepout

The Workers Lifestyle Group proudly hosted the second CEO and Co Winter Sleep Out to support the Blacktown Women’s and Girls’ Health Centre (BWGHC).

BWGHC is a community-based, not-for-profit, women’s health centre which provides accessible health and wellbeing services for women and girls in Blacktown LGA regardless of their income.

Over 30 participants, including our very own CEO: Morgan Stewart, Blacktown Workers Club Group staff, members from NSW Police, Blacktown Women’s & Girls Health Centre, Paynter Dixon, My88FM, Gold Crest Security and more braved a cold night sleeping in the Workers Blacktown car park. Collectively (and with your help) this amazing team raised over $47,000!

“Blacktown Workers Club is committed to doing it’s part in preventing Domestic & Family Violence in Blacktown and surrounding areas. These much-needed funds will help provide emergency crisis intervention and support for women and children, including domestic violence counselling/case management, emergency backpacks, food, overnight accommodation and transport.”

– Morgan Stewart, CEO Workers Lifestyle Group.

Women and children going through Domestic and Family Violence are at risk of homelessness, which is a huge factor that may impact their wellbeing.

To find out more about Blacktown Women’s and Girls’ Health Centre please visit: www.womensandgirls.org.au

Workers Group staff

“Carevan are fortunate in the community’s support, but most items are an increasing cost as our numbers have grown since our inception. This includes, not just the extra food and produce, but service items such as cutlery, takeaway containers, bags for hampers, tea, coffee and the extras required to hold a meal service. In addition, the impact of COVID on Carevan’s operational costs have increased our weekly spend. This is to accommodate the strict guidelines regarding hygiene, such as bulk sanitiser, and other cleaning products in order to be able to conduct the meal service in a COVID friendly and safe manner.

This funding is directed not to any one small project, but to Carevan’s weekly work itself. Carevan’s mission is to combat social isolation and the despair that homelessness and social disadvantage create.” – Andrew Scott, CEO Carevan Blacktown.

If you would like more information, donate, volunteer, or partner with Carevan Blacktown, please get in contact via email: info@carevanblacktown.org.au or by scanning the QR code.

Better Foundation

Better Foundation was created in 2016 to support Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals. Both Hospitals are educational, associated with the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University.

They continue each year to raise vital funds for state-of-the-art equipment, world’s best practice research and advanced education for all clinical staff: medical, nursing, and allied health.

Their vision is to give our community the very best in quality local healthcare. The goal is to, bit by bit, to make Blacktown & Mount Druitt Hospitals better.

We have a history of donations prior to the partnership with Better Foundation. The Echocardiogram, also known as the Echo Machine, donated to Blacktown Hospital in 2013 and the ECG Cardiograph in 2014 together valuing over $180,000.

Since then, we have assisted both Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals with Better Foundation through Parent Education Programs, Rehab Medical Equipment and Fibroscan Machines.

In 2019, Workers Blacktown hosted the very successful Better Foundation Spring Gala Fundraiser. Over $25,000 was raised for the much-needed equipment at both hospitals.

Due to the pandemic, the Spring Gala Fundraiser came to a halt. However, the WLG continued their support in 2020 - Donating over $47,000 towards the refurbishment of the Mother’s Room at Mount Druitt Hospital, a new CTG Machine (Foetal Heart Rate Monitor) and an Accu-Vein Scanner, which is an ultrasound vein finder. Without this scanner, treatments could not be administered. Prior to the WLG involvement, patients would be transferred to other hospitals for this treatment.

More recently in the 2021/22 Club Grants, we have donated over $57,000 for an OBS Machine, used for COVID-19 patients and equipment to go into the brand-new Gastroenterology Unit at Blacktown Hospital.

“The Workers Lifestyle Group are dedicated to helping the Blacktown and Greater Western Sydney community and with the help of organisations such as the Better Foundation, the Club will keep striving forward to a better future.” – Morgan Stewart, CEO Workers Lifestyle Group.

With restrictions eased, the Better Foundation Spring Gala will be hosted once again by Workers Blacktown on Friday the 18th of November, with goals to raise over $30,000.

That’s not all, the we are going one step further and turning our Annual Children’s Christmas Party (held at Workers Sports on Sunday the 4th of December) into another fundraising event for the Better Foundation. These funds will go directly to the new Children’s Ward at Blacktown Hospital.

Diabetes Awareness

Almost 700,000 people living with diabetes experience a mental or emotional health challenge every year.

In addition, many people living with diabetes experience shame due to misinformation and misconceptions about diabetes.

Between the 10th and 16th of July was National Diabetes Week. Here at Workers Blacktown, we invited Western Sydney Diabetes to set up shop inside the Club to spread awareness and help people understand the ins and outs of what diabetes is all about.

This is the 3rd year of ‘Heads Up Diabetes’ National Diabetes Week campaign. It was the Club’s goal to help reduce the burden with more compassion, reduce the blame with more understanding and help the people of Western Sydney get support.

Quarter Century Night

“Now, as we grow stronger, forging straight ahead, Blacktown Workers lift your glasses, here’s to the Old Tin Shed” – This line from the whole “Old Tin Shed” song was sung by over 150 loyal members who celebrated 25 years of membership on Saturday the 13th of August.

It was a night of jubilation! Over 150 members and their guests, enjoyed a 3-course meal, with entertainment performed by the great Simon Gillespie and our resident band who took us on a musical journey through Peter Allen’s life!

Kay Kelly the Workers Lifestyle Group President said “Tonight we celebrate a giant feat! To see so many members each year reach the 25-year milestone is amazing! We appreciate each one of you and thank you for your loyalty to the Workers.”

It has been a quarter century for our members who joined the Workers in 1996! We once again want to thank you for your continued support. We look forward to the next 25 years.

Overall satisfaction rated well for Workers Clubs at our three sites – Blacktown, Sports and Hubertus. Many positive comments were made about our hard working and dedicated team and the great customer service they provide.

“You are constantly making improvements, so no real comments. The staff are really lovely.” (Quote from survey by one member).

The main opportunities for improvement were in the areas of:

• Rewards and loyalty program

• Promotions conducted

• Impressions café

We have taken action to improve all of these – including the recent launch of our new Lifestyle Rewards Program and renovations are underway to refurbish and launch the new Blue Gum Café at Workers Blacktown.

Thank you to members who took the time and effort to complete the survey and provide your valuable feedback. It’s much appreciated.

Hello Members,

I hope that you are all well. To all our members and their families that are not well or are in hospital, we wish you all a speedy recovery.

I would like to welcome Tina Maamari as the Welfare Support Officer and she will be helping me with our community welfare.

The Stroke Club had their Christmas in July on the 25 July in the Marana Room. The meal was delicious and a good time was had by all. The Stroke Club meet every Monday from 10am to 12pm. New members are welcome to join in.

We have started a Dementia Support Group which meet fortnightly on Thursdays at Workers Blacktown. Carers and anyone affected by Dementia are very welcome to attend from 10.30am to 12.30pm and join in the activities and talks on level 3.

On behalf of the Club President, Board of Directors, Management and Staff, I wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the families of the following members who have passed away since our last journal.

Yours faithfully
