r e t t e l s ’ r o edit

Unlike Laura, music has always played a huge part in my day-to-day life. The beat of the drums or the acoustic of the strings always captivate me and take me to my own world. Music allows me to be relaxed yet release strong emotions; it allows me to feel like I have something to relate to. Of course this does not mean the music I used to listen to as a kid like the Barney soundtrack, but from when my brother introduced me to punk/rock and when my parents introduced me to Queen and Meat Loaf I began to see and feel something more than just sounds; I understood the music, the lyrics and the artist and even more recent, music has allowed me to deal with personal problems that no person has been able to do. It has allowed me to get rid of anger, to deal with mourning and to ultimately make me happier. It's rather strange how music has this affect on people, but the power of some sounds and some words have changed people's lives around the world - including mine. And in relation to music & fashion, there has always been a huge relationship between both. Music inspires designers, musicians are inspired by fashion; music and fashion are two different worlds yet they manage to combine, make history together and to inspire the world, which is why fashion is also a strange thing to go through as somehow it has this massive effect on people and their emotions through expressionism. I hope you enjoy our fourth issue and we would like to thank Australian brand, Ellington for taking over our editorials this issue! Love Jasmine I have never really been a big music person until this year. I had never owned an iPod or felt some kind of deep connection with music. I've heard countless stories about people who have been through some kind of tragedy and felt that music 'really lifted' them from that dark time. That was never me. It wasn't until my dad introduced me to a few of his favourite songs that I started to become so much more interested in discovering new songs, artists and bands. My favourite musicians range from Queen, Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Azealia Banks, Augie March, Jane Birkin, Serge Gainsbourg, Robbie Williams, The Zombies, The Killers, The Beatles, David Bowie, Eminem, Tupac, Notorious BIG and Lana Del Ray. So quite a mix of genre's in there. There is no doubt about it; music has a huge influence in today's culture, which is why it is our theme for the fourth issue of DALLIANCE. It plays a huge part in everything from movies, to defining a specific culture to of course fashion. Endless collaborations with models in music videos, musicians turning to fashion designers ... the list of moments where music and fashion is intertwined is endless. And with that, I hope you enjoy this issue! Who are your favourite musicians? Let us know by sending us a message via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram! Love Laura xx

PUNK: CHAOS

This May the Metropolitian Museum of Art opened it’s Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit to the world. As you explore this exhibit you will see how punk has influenced fashion and design from its birth in the 1970s to today’s fashion, whether that be Gianna Versace S/S 1994 Safety Pin Dress or Moda Operandi’s exclusive collection for the exhibit, which featured top designers and brands including Balmain, Givenchy, Eddie Borgo and Rodarte. The exhibition features around 100 designs which demonstrate elements of punk in modern designs. Plus, with four showcases that specifically represents DIY you will no doubt leave the exhibit with a few ideas up your sleeve. If you can’t visit the exhibition fear not as the Punk: Chaos to Couture book is now available online! Also this year, The Met Ball celebrated the launch of the exhibit as the theme for the night was of course, punk. Some of our favourite looks were worn by Cara Delevingne, Seinna Miller and Rooney Mara. The Met Ball is an annual event, hosted by Vogue Magazine which celebrates the opening the Metropololitian Musuem. Editor in chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour has a large role in the decisions going into making such an event, from the benefit committee to the guest list. Previous themes have included ‘Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy’ (2008), and ‘American Women: Fashioning a National Identity’ (2010).

Vivienne Westwood is an English fashion designer, who is said to be responsible for revitalizing the modern punk aesthetic and bringing it into mainstream fashion.

In the 70s, a creative collaboration grew between herself and her partner Malcolm McLaren. They opened a boutique together, in West London, called ‘Let it Rock’, which was later changed to ‘Too young to die’ and ‘Too fast to live’. Together they created clothes, taking inspiration from bikers, rockers and street walkers. Vivienne Westwood’s first catwalk collection as a designer was presented in 1981, where she showed off the works between herself and Mclaren. In 1985 she stopped producing their line, ‘World’s End’ label, to concentrate on her namesake lines.

KATE MOSS + PETE DOHERTY FASHION AND MUSIC, MUSIC AND FASHION: IT IS AN ENDLESS ROMANTIC STORY!

As I thought about the theme of this issue Kate Moss and Pete Doherty popped into my head immediately. They were this perfect mix of fashion and music! But let us start at the beginning. Kate was born January 16th 1974 and was discovered as a model at the age of 14. Quickly she became one of the most famous models of all times working for Calvin Klein, Gucci, Chanel and appearing on a lot of Vogue Covers. As if it is not enough she also played an important role in the music scene. She was in the music video of ‘I just don’t know what to do with myself ’ by the White Stripes and many others. Then, in 2005 she fell in love with the worlds hottest bad boy; the one and only Pete Doherty born March 12th 1979 known for playing at ‘The Babyshambles’ and taking drugs. They have been together for two years and affected each other’s worlds massively. Kate started to dress more rock ‘n roll and got this 24/7 wasted look which she achieved by leather, black and her flawless out-of-bed hair mixed with girly hints. Through the relationship with Pete, Kate became the ultimate rock ‘n roll Queen. Pete’s style was always influenced by his music like The Smiths. His style is everything London stands for! Rock, Grunge, always wasted and too cool to care about anything other than music. I do not think you can count the amount of perfect styles those two had, just as you cannot count the people who were inspired by them. Maybe it is because I am in love with Pete’smusic and I am dying for Kate’s style, but for me they are music and fashion. Music will always inspire designers and musicians need fashion to represent what they are standing for. Pete in a pair of Jeans and a straight T-Shirt? Not quite rock ‘n roll is it? The Saint Laurent

T C E J O R P C I S U M The Saint Laurent Music Project is a black and white photo series featuring prominent musicians such as Courtney Love, Daft Punk, Kim Gordon, Ariel Pink and Marilyn Manson. This project shows the changing aesthetic of the historic house due to the influence of creative director Hedi Slimane while also paying homage to the brand’s relationship with rock stars.

Since the early days of Yves Saint Laurent (now Saint Laurent Paris) Laurent himself styled musicians from David Bowie to Mick Jagger. Slimane following in the same vein as he has clothed the Libertines and Franz Ferdinand with Sky Ferreira modelling for the pre fall lookbook. Blurring the line between and musician and model, Slimane continues on his dark and edgy aesthetic.

ustralia’s new kid on the block, Christina Exie burst onto the fashion scene in 2012 after winning Project Runway Australia.

Televised competitions rarely produce long-term successes, but Christina Exie’s avant-garde spirit as a designer spirit as a designer has allowed her to grow and prosper within Australia; and soon the entire fashion world. Christina Exie, unlike many designers, disregards trends and reveals a story in her collections through the construction process. Obscure angles, geometric patterns and silhouettes pervade each of her collections this far.

Music influences fashion in a variety of ways through lyrics and sound, but Exie steered left of field, as tradition, in her most recent spring/summer collection titled ‘Bass’: she didn’t use the art of music, but the science to inspire her. Even more specifically, she was inspired by “visuals created by low sound frequency vibrations.” Exie has used the highest quality fabric, technique and construction to create a fashionisation of science.

“How did Christina Exie stylise what seems to be a scientific mess of shapes and lines? In leather, monochrome and silhouettes. The sound particles that fly through the air with the drum of the bass have materialised onto a collection of structured leather vests, visors and panelled along t-shirts. Also, spotted patterned splashed neatly across streamlined maxi dress and blouses.

The jagged lines of infrasound are translated in the obscurely angled silhouettes and structures of her garments. The laser cut lines of the vested collar, sharp angled collars of the crop tops and in the structured patterns splashed across the groin of her denim. And the sound waves that show the frequency of the vibrations are mirrored in the flowing peplum belts. Christina Exie has successfully digitised her

clothing to create a stylish and razor sharp collection. She has proved that her talents far outstretched her competitors on Project Runway to be on par with the international successes

in the fashion industry. Her success illustrated in the thunderous applause and she walked the runway after her show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia earlier this year.

ASHION AND MUSIC

BY DANIELLE HIOE

Fashion and music are both global industries affecting each and every one of us. What songs we listen to, what bands we like, the clothes we wear. They make up the identity we want to present to ourselves and to the people around us. These two have been linked through the ages and continue to be combined today. An example being this year’s Met Ball theme being Punk: Chaos to Couture. On the fashion side we think Vivienne Westwood, the infamous Versace safety pin dress, leather, studs and mesh. But the ‘punk’ movement in fashion was first influenced by punk music and its listeners clad in combat boots and Mohawks with safety pins holding it together.

M USIC ’ S INFLUENCE ON FASHION

Wild Wild West!

! As everyone already knows, Kanye West is well acquainted with the fashion world. West’s own personal style has also influenced fans and fashion freaks alike. ! He launched his own womens’ ready-to-wear collection in 2012, which debuted in the prestigious Paris Fashion Week. Big names like Anja Rubik, Chanel Iman, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Karlie Kloss, and Anna Selezneva walked in his show, donning everything backless, leather, and cut-out. West has always seemed to have a fascination with models in the high fashion world; a quote from his song “Christian Dior Denim Flow” reads– ‘If you work with my people, speak that Jourdan Dunn language/Make a phone call out to Joan Smalls’. ! More recently, Kanye West has teamed up with Parisian denim extraordinaire APC for a much-hyped capsule collection. The collection launched on Bastille Day, July 14, 2013, with pieces ranging from $120-$300. APC x Kanye consists of high quality Japanese raw denim, basic tees, and unconventional hooded sweatshirts. ! Unfortunately, Kanye’s fashion endeavors seem like they will never amount to more than a celebrity fest. The day he outruns the hype will be the liberating moment that will allow his brand to take flight. [Kendall Shieh]

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand’s third largest island, just after Phuket and Ko Chang. It’s a beautiful island, with plenty to do that hosts over a million tourists from all around the world each year. More island-style than Bangkok and less busy than Phuket, it’s the perfect balance of adventure; with waterfalls, elephant trekking, water sports and tranquillity with secluded beaches and airy day spas. I have been to Thailand twice before, to both Phuket and Koh Samui and although both similar there was a more relaxed feel to Koh Samui. Chaweng Beach is perfect for that busy party beach, with bars, clubs and massage huts spotted along the beach. If you are after a more serene beach experience make a visit to Silver Beach. With it’s white sands, beautiful rock formations and little crowds it’s the perfect place to relax reading a good book and get away from the tropical humidity by floating in the still water. Thailand is known for its cheap shopping and you can get everything from sunglasses to wood carvings to an assortment of silk pieces. The shopping strip along Chaweng beach is great for tourist items, but be prepared to see similar things in most stores. Fisherman’s market is a fun shopping experience, with food, café’s and stalls selling things that are harder to find in the main shopping strips.

Every fashion house wants to renew its brand and continue to innovate and surprise consumers with their new creations. However, they also want to be represented by an iconic piece and vision that will tell the story of the brand. Hermés, Dior, Céline, Chanel, Givenchy and many more are making their bags more than just an ‘‘it’’ accessory and instead into and iconographic piece.

ALEXANDER WANG ROCCO BAG

When thinking of a bag, the first thing that comes to mind is a place to carry all your personal belongings. The Rocco bag has an unusual doctors bag shape that is available in various colours, but the studded bottom makes this sleek bag something more edgy than something a doctor would carry, which is why is represent Alexander Wang so well. After passing through the arms of prestigious celebrities, such as the Olsen twins and also being the ultimate model off duty accessory, I think it is fair to say that this bag will stay around for a long, long time.

CELINE

This incredibly unique and exclusive design represents the hip side of the brand. With really elaborate lines and beautiful stitching this bag is an anthem to the Céline legacy. With a wide colour palette to choice from you will find it easy to mix and match it with any outfit. With every new collection we get fresh creations that are objects of desire. The double Cs are already an icon of its own, but when you mix it with quilted leather, leather mixed gold chain and a simple rectangular shape it is a sure-fire hit! There’s no wonder why this bag has been related to the most iconic people in the fashion industry; this bag has an empire on it’s own, that to this day is present. RUSSIAN

FASHION

5 or even less years ago there couldn’t be such an expression especially in a good way. People from foreign countries such as France, UK, USA known as trendsetters used to think that there was no any similar thing to fashion in Russia except maybe big fur hats or photo shoots at Red Square. It was quite unpleasant considering how many fashionable events and people we have. However now the situation is quite opposite side by side with the fact that nowadays russian girls decided to buy airplane ticket and finally be found at the world fashion weeks. One of these girls is for now the most famous person in russian fashion without any doubts is Miroslava Duma. Street style hunters adore her style, they scream her dimunitive: “Mira!” - which means peace and world in russian. Actually she is a peace with her extraordinary ability to speak quietly and at the same time making people pay attention. She is a world with her ability to be friends with famous people all over the world and be at the same time in different places. Right from the start she wasn’t an usual girl. She was born in the famous politician Vasiliy Duma’s family. The education was a match: Moscow State Institute of International Relations, faculty of journalism which is known for its famous gratuating students. People always ask about her line of business because for average people it doesn’t seem that obvious but the fact is that she does so many things that you can just wonder. To start with she became famous for being columnist at Harper’s Bazaar Russia. After that she carried on working there but as an art director and stylist. That’s when her fashion career began. In addition, Miroslava’s active interest is in social issues. So, in 2008, she carried out her own social project “Family values” in the edition of Harper’s Bazaar. The aim of the project was to draw attention of readers to the eternal values that were opposed to other polar in glossy magazines theme - they all talked about the relationship of oligarchs with their young concubines. The project reported on some of the most famous married couples. Among them was, for example, the family of Natalia Vodianova. Duma worked at Bazaar until 2010: she left the edition with the onset of the economic crisis in Russia. In 2011, Miroslava Duma was appointed to the post of creative fashion-editor of the Russian edition of OK! In the magazine she has a column devoted to events in the social sphere, fashion and culture.

Now Miroslava Duma is famous for her internet project Buro24/7, it is the most fashionable project dedicated to the events all over the world. The project Buro24 / 7 started operating in June 2011. The website is operated by more than 20 editors led by Miroslava Duma - the founder, editor and ideological inspiration of the project. Miroslav herself admitted that she had decided to establish the project after the birth of the child, because she could not sit idle, but at the same time wanted to be able to work from home, while continuing to give her full time to her son. The site publishes daily news, featured in several sections. Among them, “fashion”, “Culture”, “Cinema”, “Books”, “Beauty”, “Music”, “Lifestyle” and “Events.” An important place in the content of the site is a society column, and reports from fashion shows with photos stylishly dressed people. In addition to wellknown personalities from the field of fashion, film and music, photo reports of Buro24 / 7 Miroslava Duma always appears as one of the most stylish fashion community representatives. Along with her editors of the site pay attention to other Russian fashionistas: Model Elena Perminova, designer Ulyana Sergeenko, the fashion editor Oksana On designer Vika Gazinskaya etc. In February 2013 it became known about Miroslava Duma’s appointment to the post of Digital Media-director of the TsUM – Central Universal Department Store.

M D

The responsibilities of the Duma include the tasks of development of the Internet’s largest shopping destinations in Russia. The main objective is to promote online store and website on social networks and promoting it. Much of her time Miroslava Duma dedicates to charity. She is the founder of the charity fund “Planet of the world”, which aims at social projects in the field of culture and education. The main objectives of the fund is the moral transformation of society, as well as raising funds for treatment and education of orphans, the elderly and others in need. Within the fund several major projects are carried out. One of them - “Protect.me” - aims to care and treatment of orphans suffering from cystic fibrosis, as well as the care and protection of children from low-income families. Designer Vika Gazinskaya designed t-shirts for the project, the proceeds from the sale of which are directed to help children in need. The project “Health” devoted entirely to provide medical care for sick children-orphans and children from poor families. Another project aims to build a house for the elderly and further assistance and care for the elderly. Style

Miroslava Duma - the owner of a vast and variegated wardrobe, where you can see how the clothes of world

famous fashion houses and cheap stuff from stores Zara, Topshop and H & M. Due to the fact that Duma is quite petite she took in all her clothes to look perfect. Miroslav confeses in love to high-heeled shoes and Hermes purses. She often wears the most trendy items from the latest collections of top European designers: neoprene sweatshirts from Balenciaga, small bags from Chanel, neon things from Christopher Kane, etc.The evolution of the style of Miroslava Duma is easy to follow, noting a smooth transition from teenage to a more feminine style and refinement, sometimes with a touch of androgyny. So, if earlier Duma often wore ripped jeans and T-shirts with prints, now she prefers more elegant or, conversely, extravagant things.

Duma boldly combines bright prints, fabrics and textures, but often appears in monochrome images. She can be noticed in some a-line skirt with soft fabrics, without a belt or with a narrow belt at the natural waist level, length above the knee. Duma likes to complement jackets, sweaters and even coats with the belt at the waist. Duma wears them casually thrown over her shoulders. Another favorite theme of Miroslava is called geometric silhouette in the style of the 70’s, with its inherent oversize coats and jackets. A key theme of style Miroslava Duma - is eclectic and the combination of incongruous. Fashionable experiments helped her to achieve the status of a style icon and a trendsetter of street fashion.

wake up every morning to the smell of coffee, I know... crazy. I’m pretty sure that most business owners don’t need alarm clocks. I can’t function or speak without coffee. I check my emails and the news from my phone in bed. Most of the time I end up waking my boyfriend

with a question. He then proceeds to get frustrated with me but most mornings it turns into a full blown meeting. His daily job is to walk our dog, Rigby in the morning. I take the night shift. Every morning he argues that since he helped me with work, I should walk the dog. This never happens. I’m a great negotiator.

If I don’t go to the gym (which is downstairs), I’ll move on to the living room and sit with a cup of coffee. I work best when alone or at least get the most done that way.

Rigby and I go into the office shortly after that. My amazing team updates me on what is going on and I’ll tell them what I need done. Each day is so different. I have set priorities but then a lot of the time crazy things happen in the moment and become the top priority for the day. The ‘to do’ list usually gets thrown out the window.

I’d say 4 out of 7 workdays I’m putting out fires.

I leave work and head home. I LOVE to cook and do so when I can but most of the time I’m too busy. Without fail, we always have a pot of chili in the fridge. Dinner turns into business meetings majority of the time and then somehow friends just start pouring in. We love having people over. I end most days walking Rigby to Alamo Square park in San Francisco, it’s the best way to end a day. I spend a lot of weekends enjoying nature down by the river. This is where I get most inspired and come up with the majority of my collections.

Sasha Pivovarova Written by Menna Elzairy. At only 5’8.5” inches and a “stare of a sniper” Sasha Pivovarova has had worldwide success, strutting runways for major fashion houses like Chanel and Prada and landing major campaigns.

Sasha was born in Moscow in 1985; she always had a thing for art and was studying art history in university. In 2005 Sasha’s boyfriend photographer Igor Vishnyakov took pictures of her, sent them to IMG modelling agency and they signed her. Sasha walked for Prada for her first runway show, and ended up with a three-year exclusive advertising contract with the fashion house. Ever since then she has been in so much demand; she even boarded planes about 168 times in just one year! Although she is super busy, it has never stopped her from being the artist that she truly is. Her art has been featured at

Sasha has also collaborated with Miuccia Prada to produce a book of her own artwork and to illustrate a book for Karl Lagerfeld about Russian Fairy tales. That’s just a few of her many achievements. Sasha is now married to Igor and has a beautiful baby girl named Mia. She is also the star of Saint Laurent’s resort 2014 and Prada’s spring summer 2013 campaign. That girl just never stops, and we hope she doesn’t!

hroughout the years a very controversial topic within the fashion and modeling industry is whether models are too skinny. The designers claim that the clothing just suits skinny models better, and their primary aim is to sell their product. But in an industry that’s obsessed with thinness, how far is too far? Models have always been slim, but after looking back on supermodels of the 90s, such as Elle Macpherson, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell (with Kate Moss as an exception ... she was hailed as an anti-supermodel for her thin frame) there is no doubt about it that high fashion models are getting skinnier. When supermodel Coco Rocha said: “they told me the look this year is anorexia,” the industry grew attention for their constant demand of protruding bones and concave thighs. Some agree that clothes look more aesthetically pleasing on a slimmer frame, and a curvy girl may take attention away from the clothes that the designers want to be ‘hanging’ like on a ‘coat hanger’. Other designer’s insist that it’s much more cost efficient to use less material and make smaller sample sizes.

In the other side of the debate, people believe the thin standards of the industry may promote unhealthy eating habits to teenage girls and the models themselves, as they strive to meet the desired measurements. However, campaigns and strategies have been put in place to promote healthier habits. In Israel, new laws have come into place where all models with a BMI under 18.5 are banned from shoots and a medical report must be provided. Editors of Vogue Magazines worldwide have decided to not book any model that show signs of having an eating disorder; and Brazilian model agency ‘Star Models’ did a shocking campaign called ‘You’re not a sketch. Say no to anorexia’. The campaign features models that are photo-shopped to look as skinny as fashion drawings and sketches. Although the industry has still got a long way to go, progress is being made. Young girls must understand that everybody type is different, some with faster metabolisms and some with slower and the most important thing is that you are healthy.

WHEN Celebrities TAKE OVER BY EMMA O'NEILL

In the wake of H&M’s much awaited collaboration with power woman Beyonce, it is hard not to wonder when enough is enough. How many more celebrity fashion collaborations can there be?. Especially since Miss Carter’s line with House of Dereon suffered quite tragically; where there was sharp decrease in sales and redundancies of several staff members. All in all, collaborations are done as strategic marketing plan, which can be rather successful when well planned out. A poor example of this was when the ticking time bomb Lindsay Lohan collaboration with French fashion house Ungaro. Lindsay who was trying to restore her own life was also trying to revive a fashion brand, which is a recipe for disaster. Bloggers were running wild saying the collection was a “hot mess,” “disastrous” and “cheesy and dated.” This however, was a poorly planned out and had a nonstrategic marketing plan, which caused Ungaro to be the laugh stock of Paris Fashion week in 2009. But of

like any surviving,

creative and

industry, they find innovative ways flourishing through collaborations.

If there is one industry, which goes hand in hand with each other it is fashion and music. And, when done right, can be very successful. From the video clips, to red carpet events, everything a music artist wears will be either scrutinized by the media or on the next best-dressed list. Artist themselves have their own style and statement pieces which are ever changing along with their style of music. For this reason, it makes sense for fashion labels to take advantage of a music artist’s fame and bring their famous face on board to create their own collection, with their own twist of personal style. This year alone, Saint Laurent worked with Daft Punk and Sofia Vergara’s has a line for Kmart. Not to mention Kanye West’s collaboration with French label APC, where the controversial plain white ‘Hip Hop’ t-shirt sold out within seconds. Music artist and fashion label collaborations seem to be a never ending saturated market, but these collaborations are more popular than ever.

It is no secret that normal everyday people try to copy what a celebrity is wearing especially when it has been plastered in every magazine under the title ‘best dressed’. This way, fashion labels can use music artist’s publicity as a mean to promote new collections, which they know will sell out rapidly. Rihanna’s recent collaboration with River Island sent reviews soring. True to her rebellious and edgy style, she brought looks that were tight, revealing and daring. When the collection debut in River Island’s Oxford Street store in London reports were that police and security had to hold back the highly anticipated fans, who were in queue hours before the doors had opened. All this just so they could get their hands on her figure hugging designs. The same is expected for Beyonce’s collaboration for H&M, and it is expected to attract the largest fan audience for any fashion brand yet. This reassuring fashion brands that music artist collaborations are a smart business move. Rihanna’s line is looking to do wonders for River Island with many items already completely sold out in-store and online shortly after they became available. Staff member of River Island stores have noted there are less sale items, and more foot traffic from with a well-known brand; the pull for fans is definite. Even with bad reviews, fans can own piece created by their idols, but also because of the affordable prices, accessibility and ease that comes with high street shopping. And like they say, where this is fashion; there is music. customers of all ages. Not everyone can afford a Chanel bag, so when a celebrity launches a clothing line with a well-known brand; the pull for fans is definite. Even with bad reviews, fans can own piece created by their idols, but also because of the affordable prices, accessibility and ease that comes with high street shopping. And like they say, where this is fashion; there is music.
