to of the
our year!
It’s a very exciting time to be wrapping up 2014 and progressing into 2015, which will undeniably be a huge life milestone for me as I complete my final year of high school. I will be completing my High School Certificate, which like the publishing of this magazine, does not stop for the remainder of this year and next. For this issue, we have included a larger amount of interviews and brand-related content to draw your attention to the many amazing talents that have yet to become a household name, but nevertheless are as of equal quality to the more well-known brands. Every artist, designer, musician and label has to start somewhere and we are confident with our choice of publishing this content that you will find fashion’s very next best-new-things in this issue. Hope you enjoy! If there is anything you would like to see in future issues, please do not hesitate to email me at laura@dalliancemagazine.com Lots of Love, Laura x

TRAVEL
All the beaches in the world that I have travelled to inspire me and have been reflected in the names of the Ivory Daze styles. Portofino, Bondi, St Tropez, Costa Brava etc...
FLOWERS
I’ve always loved flowers and when I started developing the prints for the range, I knew we had to incorporate some floral love! One of my favourite experiences has been the cherry blossom festival in Japan, and the gorgeous colours of the cherry blossoms can be seen in the highlight colours of the navy floral print.
MUSIC
I find inspiration in all kinds of music and mainly associate music with different memories! I went through a mad phase of listening to Klingande on repeat, and at the moment I’m into Prayer in C by Lilly Wood and The Prick and Robin Schulz for when I need to dance. I love a bit of old school 90’s pop (Spice Girls and Hanson haha) and of course when all else fails I turn to Beyonce - The Queen!
MUSE
A young Elle Macpherson. When I was designing the range I wanted to create swimwear that was wearable, not too fussy, relaxed and comfortable. I really had the quintessential Aussie beach babe in mind, and you don’t get much more beach babe than Elle! I can see her in the Santa Monica one piece!
SEASON
Summer, of course! Everything about summer inspires me. What I love about summer are shown throughout the range freshly blooming tropical flowers, bright colours everywhere, relaxing in a hammock in nothing but a bikini and mangoes!
GETTING DIRTY WITH
FRANK
Let me tell you about my new best friend, his name is Frank. Everyone needs some like Frank. He makes you feel good about yourself, he brings out the best version of you and he also smells incredible. He’s also a body scrub. I’m generally quite lazy in terms of looking after my body; I didn’t have a day or night-time regime and I hadn’t found a product that made me change my ways. That was until I met Frank… As I opened my first bag of Frank Original Body Scrub I got a nice greeting from the smell of
orange essence, I grabbed two small handfuls of the coffee blend scrub and began massaging it into my skin. After waiting for 5 minutes I jumped back into the shower and discovered the magic that Frank creates. My skin has never felt so good. I couldn’t believe how much difference just one dirty session with Frank made. The special coffee blend will increase blood flow and target cellulite, the sugar and sea salt will smooth the stubborn lum ps and bumbs and the cold pressed sweet almond oil relieves any dry skin and eczema, as well as improving uneven skin tone. Frank helps with stretch marks, psoriasis, eczema, scars, blemish and other skin imperfections. He’s perfect. He’s mine. But he could be yours too. Check out FRANKBODY.COM for more.
Michael
LoSordo
Interview
What
are your inspirations and who are your muses behind each collection? Each season my inspiration stays the same though different elements and inspirations may pop into each collection. Ultimately my main source of inspiration and focus is the woman herself; making her feel beautiful above anything else. Each season we collaborate with different models and muses to make sure we grow our clientele and cater to women from different walks of life.
What
has been one of your biggest achievements to date? The past couple of years have been such an eye opening experience for us- we have travelled the world, showcasing our collection in front of the likes of Carine Roitfeld, Franca Sozzani from Italian Vogue and major editors and buyers from around the globe. Each season we strive to become more aware about the growth in the international market as we expand. I have also been privileged to work and collaborate with The Woolmark Company. It would be hard to pick just one achievement as the journey is a constant and rewarding wave of success and triumphs.
What
are your goals within the fashion industry? I have a dream. I work to live my dream and with every success we tick off as an accomplishment every season. I guess to narrow it down I would love to see my brand grow into more than just fashion and to create a lifestyle concept and build on growing our presence within the international fashion scene.
“I work to live my dream”
Who
is the ‘Michael Lo Sordo’ girl? She is and wants to be beautiful.
Do
you stick to any rules, when designing? Absolutely not, designing is the trickiest part of the process because not only do you have to create something that will sell but stick to an aesthetic that represents the brand and its ethos. A process that needs to be revisited over and over to strive for perfection, sometimes ideas are left on the cutting room floor that get revisited another season to come.
What
matters to you most as a fashion designer? Quality and perfection.
What
is the best and worst part about conceptualizing and constructing a collect? Time. I always need more time, but when working to international schedules it’s a fast past world to keep up with… definitely not for the faint hearted!
Who
would you love to see wearing your designs? I am fascinated with Emma Watson at the moment and would love to dress her.
What
changes would you like to see the fashion industry undergo, if any? I believe in nurturing and fostering design in general not only in fashion. I am privileged enough to make something out of nothing and sit where I am today being sold in some of the best boutiques around the world. Quite often it’s a long hard road, but if I wasn’t a dreamer I wouldn’t be where I am today.
How
would you describe the style that your line exemplifies? Modern femininity with a classic take on tailoring, focusing on the essence of the using quality fabrications.
Who’s
THAT GIRL?
L e o n a ‘Binx’ Walton (nicknamed by her older brothers) is marching to the beat of her own drum, casually attracting a following of designer fans behind her as she goes. Growing up in Hawaii and Tennessee, Binx is part of the new wave of models kissing goodbye the conventionally pretty ‘cookie-cutter’ look, welcoming previously perceived flaws and apparent strangeness.
Whilst fronting campaigns for Chanel, Louis Vuitton and being apart of Olivier Rousteig’s exclusive #balmainarmy (alongside Kendall Jenner and Rosie Huntington-Whitely), Walton counts hip-hop dancing and skateboarding as her hobbies amongst building her impressive resume in the ever-changing world of modelling.

Parisian Fantasies By Amy Martins What’s better than arriving home after a long & stressful day of work, filling the bathtub with water and some bath salts, accompanied by the aroma of a perfumed candle? Very little Awaken your senses, with Maison D’Amore candles, our latest fixation at Dalliance Magazine.
MAISON DA’MORE Model: Louise De Chevigny Photographer: Pierre Toussaint
Founded in 2012 by Hayley Bonham & Nadia Rosa, Maison D’Amore is an Australian designed and Parisian made fragrance house that produces the exquisitely perfumed luxury candle. From the light and pure Fleur & Rhubarbe, with mimosa and musk as base notes, rose, cardamome seads and peony as middle notes, and sambac jasmine, magnolia & grapefruit as head notes, to the smoky and sensual Feuille de Tabac, that diffuses the softest scent of vanilla, cinnamon & honey, ginger, elemi wood and tobacco leaves; these perfumed candles will magically whisk you away to your imaginary abode in the heart of Paris. You know what we’re talking about…the desired weekend mornings spent in your aforementioned dwelling, listening to Francoise Hardy in the bathroom, in your underwear. Or perhaps picking up your favourite flowers at le Marché aux Fleurs in Notre-Dame, walking around the 1st arrondissement and stopping by at 31 Rue Cambon only to arrive home, slip into your silkiest robe and spent all night with the windows opened, the Parisian air surrounding you.
There is something quite magical about these candles, which make those fantasies seem like someday realities. It’s the scent to set the dreaming. Buy yours now at www.maisondamore.com

Skin Food BY NATASHA NORFORD
Eat your way to beauty. With the ‘silly season’ coming up shortly, it’s easy to let your game drop and replace a healthy lifestyle for champagne, mince pies and eggnog. With these power ingredients, resist the temptation to indulge excessively and eat your way to health!

Coconut Oil
Avocado
It’s hyped up by celebrities and health chefs for good reason coconut oil is an incredible source of healthy fats, lauric acid and capric aci, meaning you can use it in your cooking, baking, or as a simple salad dressing! It’s such a versatile product, and also makes for an incredible hair masque, leave in treatment or serum. Sleeping with coconut oil in your ends overnight gives the ‘do a much needed chance to restore and repair with natural, chemical free perfection! Alternatively, you can use coconut oil as natural moisturiser (though use sparingly), makeup remover, or shower scrub! Lather it on as you bathe, and remove shine later on with a body brush or exfoliant stick. Make sure you shop organic to ensure all the vitamins remain in tact!
Avocado is not only a nutritional powerhouse, but beauty’s best-kept secret. The fruit is loaded with protein, fiber vitamins and minerals, helpful in clearing up your skin. The pores are already singing.
We’ve tried it! Shop with Banaban Coconut Oil for a quality, cold pressed virgin coconut oil.
Buy local! Go to a grower or fruit barn for a creamy, quality avo deliciousness.
Pumpkin Seeds The pepita, or pumpkin seed, is a little pocket rocket pumped with magnesium, zinc, tryptophan and iron. These bad boys make sure your immunity, cell growth, sleep, mood and senses are fighting prime. Not only is your skin health going to be tops with a handful of these per day, but so is your taste, smell and eye game. Not sure how to use pumpkin seeds? Sprinkle on top of your breakfast in the mornings, mix into a trail mix to snack on during the day, or toss through a curry, salad or stir fry at night! Check out the Australian Pumpkin Seed Company for top-notch taste and support our farmers at the same time!
Cacao
Coconut Water
Here’s one way to have chocolate with zero guilt... decadence and nutritious in one pop! It’s the cocoa bean in its purest, rawest form, uncompromised by the processed production of that low-grade chocolate hiding under your pillow. It’s been called a superfood for its high levels of sulfur, which in turn promotes strong nails and glossy locks. Add a spoon to a smoothie or hot drink, for a quick fix.
This stuff is going to prime your skin like nothing else. Coconut water is loaded with electrolytes, potassium, calcium and sodium, as well as a host of other minerals. It’s a nutritional goldmine, and you’ll find that hydrating yourself from natural means will have positive results in no time... when drunk, coconut water actually moisturises the skin from within. Careful! You have to buy well to get all the benefits out of your drink. The fake nasties and concentrated additives many brands use to expand the shelf life of their products compromises the essence of the coconut water’s rich flavour and hydrating goodness. Make sure you go in for a label that contains only the one ingredient, sourced from young Thai coconuts under organic conditions.
We’ve tried it! Shop with Power Superfoods for a trusty organic chocolatey blend.
Leafy Greens Yes, yes. We’ve heard it all before, haven’t we? No kidding, the humble lettuce of this world is revved up with disease fighting phytochemicals that promote weight loss and maintenance. But it’s the high water and collagen content of your greens that will keep you and your skin, hair and complexion glowing. Greens are a must girls, no question. So don’t skip the spinach next meal out, make it a staple of as many meals as you can for all-round maintenance. Buy local! Go to a grower or fruit barn for a decent, dark green bunch.
We’ve tried it! Shop Natural Raw C for a sweet flavour and a flush of natural goodness.

achelle Sinclair and Fay Ogunbadejo are the creative geniuses behind the iconic Australian label ‘KAHLO’. Known for their beautifully structured pieces; the two draw inspiration from observation, art and travel, only using the finest materials sourced from Australia, the United States and Italy to create their pieces.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL? Mainly day-to-day crisis management! – As well as gathering inspiration, designing, creating samples, problem solving, fabric sourcing...no two days are the same, which is why we love what we do.
WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO? We look up to local Australian peers who are dedicated and passionate about the industry. We are in awe of successful designers such as Christopher Esber and Michael Lo Sordo who are inspiring in both their creative design and work ethic.
WHAT WAS YOUR BIG BREAK? Last year we were nominated for the Australian regional Woolmark Prize. Being such a young brand, it was an honour to be considered for this prestigious award.

DID/DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR, OR SOMEBODY WHO SUPPORTED YOU THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY? We have mentors both within the fashion industry and out of the industry that have helped us in different areas. It is so important to us to have mentors because their advice, guidance AND support is invaluable.
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS IS IT IMPORTANT TO POSSESS IN ORDER TO MAKE IT IN THE INDUSTRY? It is important to be passionate, determine and ambitious. You have to be super-organised and fully prepared for the highs and lows.
WHAT’S THE BEST AND WORST EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD ON THE JOB SO FAR? The best experience is the feedback that we receive from our customers and fans. This reinforces us that we are doing the right thing and it is reassuring to know that our designs and quality are appreciated. It is always difficult for us when we suffer production issues. We can be as organised as possible but some issues are out of our control and this can lead to major set-backs.
Cut out dress: Black ponte Double zipper pencil skirt: Gold stamp leather
High neck mini dress: Metallic rosegold leather
Double strap slip dress: Grey silk Strapless bustier: Mini leather
Double zipper french: Gold stamp metallic leather / zip crop top black Two tone crop short: Gold stamp metallic leather & black suede
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS BEEN THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS? Perseverance – no matter how many challenges arise you have to be determined enough to work through them and not give up. The end result is certainly more rewarding when you have worked hard to achieve it!
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS A ‘RED-FLAG’ TO AVOID DOING WHEN TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE FASHION INDUSTRY? Not being prepared and organised enough is a red flag. We cannot stress how important is it to have a business plan in place so that you know exactly what your goals and objectives are in the short and long term. You also need to research your chosen target market and you need a clear understanding of who your customer is.
DO YOU BELIEVE SOCIAL MEDIA HAS A LARGE IMPACT ON ONE’S SUCCESS WITHIN THE INDUSTRY? Social media is a great way for us to gain international exposure and to reach customers that we might not ordinarily reach. It is a great tool for networking and for promoting brand awareness worldwide. However, we do believe that the quality rather than quantity is important when posting.
SARA WINFIELD “Swimwear seemed like a great option because it’s not as demanding as ready to wear...”
W
hat is the main inspiration behind your work?
My work is usually based on how I’m feeling - the colours I am attracted to that week or small things I’ve seen without consciously making note of it. I am finding that a lot of my commissioned pieces have slightly less soul compared to the pieces created for exhibitions - which I think just goes to show it’s really about capturing how I’m feeling on an off chance. People say they can often see a lot of ‘me’ in the work. Big eyes and lips, sweet but totally crazy. They’re probably right! How would you describe your style of art? It’s so hard to describe. I often just get my phone out to show people because i find associating it with a certain style rather challenging. Perhaps expressive fashion illustration. Or fauvist autobiographical portraits. It’s expressive and allows for a lot of different interpretations.
How often do you produce new work? I paint 4-6 days a week, depending on my swimwear commitments. Every day and every week are completely different. I find it very hard to get a body of work together that isn’t already sold or commissioned - there are definitely worse problems to have! It’s been a while since I painted anything that was ‘just because I wanted to.’
How long does it take to complete one piece of artwork? A piece can take between 6 hours and 5 days depending on how consistently I’m working. I get distracted easily, but also have to run two ‘businesses’ in between the physical painting - so it’s just dependent on the situation I’m in.
What is the reasoning behind your signature use of watery eyes, white hair and a pouty mouth? The whole look that those three elements give just appeals to me. It is part vulnerable, part sexy, part strange! Three things I think I’ve at some point wanted to associate myself with.
Do you have a particular muse or subject that you like to base your artwork on? I always tend to pull up images of Gemma Ward and Sasha Pivovarova because of their alien-like, beautiful little faces. I look at high end labels for garment/ accessory ideas and get my immediate surrounds for colour palettes. Subject wise, I tend to use fashion models just to get an idea, but really, I feel like I’m making the best pieces when I just smash paints around and see what happens. Most of it is just an internal desire to get a big pastel mess on a canvas.
Why did you decide to venture into swimwear design? I basically just have a really buse mind and needed another outlet for my creative energies. Swimwear seemed like a great option because it’s not as demanding as ready to wear, and allows me to focus on print and textile production more readily. In saying that, every industry has it’s challenges and I sometimes feel like I’ve been off more than I can chew, but it’s not something I would ever regret starting!
Do you have any more plans to expand? I’m always thinking of new business ventures. My boyfriend just zones out now when I talk about them now! Ultimately, when I’m a little older, I would like to be considered an entrepreneur. I’ll always paint - it’s necessity to me; but there’s always room for new projects in my mind. The latest is to start a modern gym, with lifestyle products down where we’re living at the moment! We’ll see how long that idea lasts!
Who is the ‘Sara Winfield ‘ girl? I never paint with anyone in particular in mind. I think to target a market when creating artwork takes away a bit of the magic. People are drawn to artwork based on their own experiences and feelings, and it’d be such a shame to encourage certain groups of people to feeling anything but ‘real responses’ towards my work. Sara Winfield Swim should belong to women who make considered choices when selecting swimwear. She would be an everyday woman, who is realistic and at ease with her body. Someone who favours considered design over trend, and who is looking for investment swimwear, rather than a quick fix.
CURTIS COLLECTION
‘simple, attainable solutions’ ‘simple, attainablebeauty beauty solutions’
Q&A WITH VICTORIA CURTIS. Founder and owner of Curtis Collection. HOW DID CURTIS COLLECTION COME ABOUT? Having grown up in a family of very talented hairdressers, makeup artists and beauty therapists, my love affair with all things beauty started at a very young age! My very first job was in a beauty salon, so it is an environment that I feel at home in even to this day! Ironically, in recent years in my marketing role at L’Oreal Australia, I worked in the Professional Salon Division. Working so closely with beauty salons during this time, it reignited my passion for the industry and allowed me to build the knowledge and experience that was necessary for me to start my own salon specific cosmetics range. My vision was to combine the chic and style of a department store makeup counter with high quality products, ingredients and formulas that would complement a salon’s beauty services and their total skin approach. My quest for the ultimate makeup collection saw me travel around the globe sourcing the highest grade of vitamins and minerals, cutting edge formulas and chic sophisticated packaging in order to create what is now known as the Curtis Collection. You’ve completed a university degree in accounting and marketing…how did this help you create your brand? Having studied both marketing and accounting, this allows me to understand both facets of my business. I feel that it is crucial to have a balance of the two. This background knowledge allows me to make strategic decisions, ensuring the future growth and success of Curtis Collection.
‘MUST HAVES’ What would you say are Curtis Collection’s must haves? Curtis Collection’s must-haves are everything needed to create its ICONIC SIGNATURE GLOW. Radiant Glow Illuminator The only way to restore vibrancy and radiance back in to your complexion, ensuring skin doesn’t look dull or dehydrated. Illuminating Bronzer This universal shade suits every skin tone providing a natural sun kissed glow; also essential to Curtis Collections Signature Glow. Brow Definer and Styler At the moment the Brow Definer and Styler is one of our most iconic products – an innovative fine tip pen that naturally defines brows without looking as though you have pencilled them in! It’s an easy fix for every woman providing 16 hours of wear, not to mention being waterproof, it’s perfect for summer time spent at the beach.
‘ my love affair with all things beauty started at a very young age!’
Radiant Glow Illuminator How did winning the Makeup Artist of the Year in 2013 affect your work? It was a nice achievement and it’s lovely to be recognised within the industry. It certainly gave myself and Curtis Collection increased credibility within the makeup community – I was honoured. Where do you source your high quality ingredients? We manufacture everything in US and work very closely with all of our manufacturers to source only the finest quality ingredients whichwe then use to produce the best products on the market.
What is your personal signature beauty look? I love a Bronzed Glow – Illuminator is a must in my daily look and I tend to focus on my eyes mostly. I like to use warm hues to match my skin tone and hair and I always finish with a coral lip. Curtis Collection Makeup Styling is all about styling your look to suit your skin tone, hair colour and wardrobe. Makeup styling ensures that your entire look comes together perfectly! I swear by this and encourage our clients to do the same when choosing their Signature Look! What’s next for you and Curtis Collection? We’ve just recently expanded to New Zealand making us an international brand. We plan on entering additional international markets next year which is obviously really exciting for Curtis Collection. With this expansion we also have a lot of new and exciting product launches on the horizon. Curtis Collection is also a fashion forward brand - we love to partner with Australia’s most iconic fashion designers on the runway. The likes of Rachel Gilbert and Carla Zampatti have chosen us recently to create the looks for their Spring/Summer Launches using the Curtis Collection product range. The flawless, striking looks have gained major recognition in the industry and have showcased the quality, performance and the unmistakable glow that Curtis Collection is proudly renowned for. We plan to continue these incredible partnerships in the future and look forward to creating iconic looks on the runway that reflect the seasons latest trends.
‘I TRULY LOVE WHAT I DO SO IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE WORK AT ALL’
What are the best and worst parts of owning your own makeup brand? I suppose I experience the same issues that most business owners are challenged with daily. Of course you never switch off and there are always crucial decisions that need to be made which could ultimately determine the future of your brand. Although this is the part that I love! Knowing that the decisions I make today could result in a fabulous product being launched in the market or my brand growing and expanding internationally, keeps me motivated and inspired. These are the elements of business that I find both rewarding and incredibly exciting! That is what owning your own business is all about. I truly love what I do so it doesn’t feel like work at all – and of course the endless supply of makeup is always wonderful!
‘MORE THAN MAKEUP’ ‘stunning shades’
How is Curtis Collection different from other makeup brands in the market? It is premium brand offering luxury cosmetics for the everyday woman. The comprehensive range of stunning shades and high end products, have been designed to offer simple, attainable beauty solutions and allow women to effortlessly achieve the Curtis Collection signature glow.
Do you have a particular muse, or person that continuously influences you? My gorgeous mother is and has always been my muse. She lights up a room when she enters and her hair and makeup are always flawless. Her beauty radiates and I believe that a woman should glow from the inside out. This inspires me to create beauty products that allow a woman’s true beauty to shine through and enhance her best features effortlessly. What’s your advice to aspiring women out there? To find exactly what it is that you’re passionate about and pursue it any way that you possibly can. There are many different ways to enter an industry you love, depending on your skill set, you might need to try a few avenues but you will eventually get there in the end; not to mention plenty of hard work!
By choosing the right mineral foundation, women can change the way their complexion appears overnight! I always encourage women to have a proper skin consultation in order to find the foundation formula and finish that is suitable to their skin and also to their lifestyle. The Curtis Collection mineral foundations actually protect, nourish and hydrate the skin - acting as an extension of your skin care routine. This is why our dedicated Mineral Collection is literally MORE THAN MAKEUP! Our exclusive Multi Mineral Cocktail contains incredible concealing and light reflecting properties that deliver a flawless, airbrushed finish every time! The outstanding selection of products, prestigious image and dedication to developing confidence building products is what sets Curtis Collection apart from the rest!

QUICK QUESTIONS //What’s your favourite: [City?] Paris [Designer?] Hard to pick one but I’d have to say Céline due to the sheer brilliance and risks that Phoebe Philo takes when creating her designs and Valentino for the way he ran his company and built such an aspirational empire. [Musician?] Florence and the Machine [Artist?] Banksy [Film?] Cate Blanchet was brilliant in Blue Jasmine, and admirable for the way she clung to that Hermes bag even in the down times.
High fashion models are saying ‘bye’ to pure perfected beauty and ‘hello’ to the shamelessly rebellious attitude that they put on proud display with their expressive body art. The badass piercings and tattoos that entranced the 90s world of modern and edgy street style are back in a big way. Instagram feeds are overflowing with pictures of Cara Delevingne and Jordan Dunn’s matching ‘DD’ tattoos, Bambi’s inked Bambi and Candice Swanepoel’s nipple piercing. Models are traditionally expected to be plain canvases for a designer to manipulate in order create their own unique vision. However, the confidence and attitude of tattooed-up and pierced models, such as Erin Watson, assists in creating the models own brand. In this case, their fierceness, as seen through their careless rule-breaking, is admired. These procedures make bold statements on
the dainty bodies of models. The contrast of an edgy tattoo or piercing on a pretty frame is ironic, resulting in a new breed of cool. This superficial irony makes their image that much more daring. The idea of adding an interestingly original aesthetic element on such traditionally beautiful figures seems captivating. It is important to note that these tattoos are often original. If you are planning on getting a tattoo of your own, it is crucial to note the ink trends that may form the embarrassing tramp stamps of the future. As cute as dream-catchers and cage-fleeing birds are, copying other people’s tattoos takes away the unique element that makes them so appealing to begin with. After all, it’s the symbolic fearlessness and wild nature of Cara D’s lion tattoo, along with its original placement on her finger, which makes her ink exceptionally striking. In the land of piercings Abby Lee Kershaw sits on her thrown. In an interview with W Magazine, the Aussie model states “I see my body as a blank canvas that›s aching to be decorated.” Repeatedly on the cover of Vogue, the 27-yearold has a nose piercing, nipple piercing and seven ear piercings. However, it is interesting to note that many of her piercings are taken out when taking part in high fashion modelling jobs. Tattoos and piercings are a bold way to express one’s individuality. As top models are taking to this form of expression, the fashion world is beginning to embrace it. However, the natural look will never go out of style in the eyes of many designers. Consequently, if a designer feels the need to have a blank canvas to work with they may easily erase such artworks with the help of Photoshop. Nevertheless, one thing that cannot be ignored is the audacious attitudes of these leading ladies in fashion.

Black Water Moon Q&A with Renae, founder & owner.
Tell us about what inspired you for this collection.
My new collection is inspired by selfreflection - imagine a moon lit at night, your favourite music and probably some wine. Mostly it came from a quote I loved at the time, From The Key And The Name Of The Key Is Willingness:
“ The entire world is a mirror, the only thing you can ever experience is yourself. Everything you think, feel do and see is you.Your thoughts, feelings, ideas, values, philosophies and opinions create your world. Everything you experience is as it is because thats how you experience it. We experience the world the way we do because of who we are, not because of how it is. ”
Was the process of starting Black Water Moon Jewellery difficult?
Not really the designing part was fun and I really enjoyed the whole process. Each piece I create is something I would love to wear myself so that makes designing it a pleasure.
Who is the Black Water Moon Girl?
The black water moon girl is a music lover an adventure seeker and a free spirit, she loves the excitement of the city but she also appreciates nature and loves to explore the mystical beauties of the world we live in. She’s a little bit spiritual; a little bit rock n roll. She is definitely a universal wonderer.
Best thing about owning your own business?
Being the decision maker creatively and business wise is hands down the best thing ever.
What are you goals for Black Water Moon Jewellery?
I would love for Black Water Moon to expand into a full accessory line that will also include bags, shoes, hats, belts and sunglasses – well that’s the dream anyway!
What are some emerging jewellery trends for upcoming seasons?
I try not to follow trends and instead design pieces I would want to wear. But for me rings the wrap around the finger trend is exciting and I really like ear cuffs at the moment. Also I’m really into earrings right now and going to get my ears pierced again so I can wear more.
How and when did you realise you wanted to become a jewellery designer?
When I couldn’t find the jewellery that I wanted to wear in any of the shops, so I just decided I would design my own. I’ve always been a bit like a bowerbird, collecting things and having a lot of vintage jewellery to draw inspiration from.
Where did you learn your craft?
I studied fashion design and graphic design at university and I have just applied everything I had learnt over my career to jewellery designing and went from there. I always find you learn more when you just throw yourself into something.
Who would you love to see your jewellery on?
Singer of the kills… Alison Mosshart. I love her style and her music, what a talented lady.
How would you describe your personal style?
I guess my style is a bit of rock n roll/ tomboy, you don’t see me in dresses too often. I’m a jeans and tee kind of girl, with plenty of jewels, of course. I like to feel comfortable but still feel good.
What is your most treasured item in your personal jewellery collection?
A vintage necklace that I found in my local op shop, its like nothing else I’ve seen before, it reminds me a little bit of a glow mesh bag – I love it and every time I wear it I always get a bunch of compliments.
What are some tips for someone wanting to be a jewellery designer?
The biggest tip I can give anyone is if you don’t love something any more or doing it doesn’t make you happy, stop, and do something that does make you happy.

Marilyn’s Façade
It’s certainly no mean feat to reach ‘icon’ status in in the beauty and fashion industry. Those bestowed with the title are seen as fore-runners and standouts in the everchanging nature of trends, whose particular looks are re-created by millions around the world and can define a decade. But the private lives of many beauty icons from across the ages weren’t always as peachy as their perfectly blushed cheeks would suggest. Having a face as a source of income has seen many fall through the cracks of what seems to be a glamourous and high-end lifestyle. Drugs, depression, relationship breakdowns and trouble childhoods are a juxtaposition to the bright lights, fame and fortune- a veil over some of history’s most recognised beauties.

BRIDGET BARDOT
Appearing on the cover of Elle magazine at the tender age of 15, Bridget Bardot’s glamorous lifestyle saw her both loved and envied in equal measure. A breath of fresh air to the entertainment industry, the ‘Temptress of Saint Tropez’ was renowned for displaying a naturalistic, free-flowing sensuality and was the definition beauty and style. Yet, behind the celebrity curtain, fame and fortune was talking its toll on the sultry star. Quoted saying “fame has brought me so much unhappiness”, the 60’s ‘sex kitten’ was continuously in battle with her own demons and turbulent experiences. Four marriages, an alleged suicide attempt at age 26 and a nervous breakdown were unfortunately beginning to define the model’s personal life before the age of 30. Decades after her prime years in the spotlight, the star would admit how nightmarish the world of celebrity had become and the pressures that came hand in hand with constantly aiming to display a certain image.
Move over Brooke Shields, there’s a new pair of eyebrows in town. While Delevingne is a relatively new girl on the block, her look is becoming the most in-demand around town. But who is this heavy-browed, child-faced blonde who has graced the runway for no less than Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel and Stella McCartney just to name a few? Well, if you are one of her millions of social media followers, you probably already know. In the 21st century privacy is near impossible to maintain, with biographies and details on your personal life just a click away. For this modern day beauty icon, perhaps the mystery is gone, but the struggles remain. The model has openly admitted to having therapy, stating that “the best therapy is actually the more aggressive kind when they break you open and unleash you”. She’s not a huge fan of New York Fashion Week, and says it’s incredibly hard to find people to trust. Her rise to fame was so rapid and heavily documented, but the real irony of the Delevingne phenomenon is that she claims to not be that concerned by the industry. Her eye is on what she sees as a far cooler prize – making it big in music and Hollywood. Perhaps the only mystery here is where she’ll end up next.
Fame, do I like it? No.
CARA DELEVINGNE
“I’d like to live autonomously…but I’m different” Kudos to Campbell for still making us swoon over her stunning, well-aged self after nearly 30 years in the biz. We all know Campbell as the subject of many controversial headlines and court cases over the years, so surely there is no mystery left in her private life? However, Campbell herself has admitted her temper is perhaps a result of a rough childhood. Her mother gave birth to her at 19 and left her in others’ care while she travelled the world to pursue ballet. Her father, who is still unknown, left her mother four months into her pregnancy and is not named on the birth certificate. Speaking of her own behaviour, Campbell says it most likely comes from abandonment issues and trying to build up a ‘family’ of people she trusts… “and if I feel a mistrust, then I really just ... all my cards go down”.
NAOMI CAMPBELL
ANGELINA JOLIE Steering away from your typical supermodel beauties, there is a fair chance that Angelina’s lips, structured cheekbones and mesmerising eyes will be found on many ‘how-to’ beauty tutorials. Search “Angelina Jolie beauty’ in Google and you get over 70 million results - can’t argue an icon status there. Angelina is now known for being a mum, humanitarian and a total knockout actress but that’s not before the celebrity overcame a difficult past. Before the age of 20 she had “tried every drug possible”, was turned down for movie roles because she was ‘too dark’ and during her second marriage, battled anorexia. Her father, John Voigt, allegedly had an extramarital affair when she was a very young which tore her family apart, resulting in a strained relationship between the two that continues today. Despite presenting a strong and powerful image to the public, Jolie admits she continued to carry the baggage from her earlier years, recently telling Elle, “I never thought I’d meet the right person...having come from a broken home—you kind of accept that certain things feel like a fairy tale, and you just don’t look for them”.
EDIE SEDGWICK
“I have an accident about every two years… one day it won’t be an accident”. If there was a photo accompanying the Oxford Dictionary definition of ‘cool’ then it would probably be of Edie Sedgwick. Edie was cool. Well, at least in the public eye she was. An American heiress, socialite, actress, and fashion model, she is best known for being one of Andy Warhol's superstars. With her trademark pixie hair, smokey eyes and chandelier earrings, Vogue’s ‘It Girl’ of the mid-60s undoubtedly carried an aura of both mystery and darkness with her wherever she went. Despite so much talent and promise, her drug-taking started to become so notorious that editors stopped calling. Even before meeting Warhol, Eddie had been in a mental hospital twice and suffered from severe anorexia. The style icon’s life came to an abrupt end at just 28 years old after an alleged overdose. Perhaps Edie’s life was a waste; perhaps she achieved all that she ever would. But there is no doubting that her iconic style, look and unique character left a mark on the conscience of a generation. The kind of star she was to become will forever remain a mystery.

THE BLUE LAGOON Who didn’t want to be Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon? Marooned on a tropical island paradise, the young, tanned brunette epitomized raw, natural beauty. A mere 14 years old at the time of filming, she guilelessly roamed the island, hacking coconuts and bathing in freshwater rock pools. What’s more, her trademark, thick, natural eyebrows are making a comeback for SS15, with Jonathan Saunders and Versus Versace opting for brushed-up brows as well as minimal make-up. Get your hands on some tinted brow gel (Anastasia Beverley Hills does a good one – a favourite of Cara Delevingne and Brooke Shields herself) to thicken, define and tame the strays. And for the brave amongst you, go utterly barefaced as seen at Marc Jacobs, where the models walked with absolutely no make-up at all. As for clothes, take a nod from her white and beige, tattered cloths, perfectly complemented by an enviably golden tan. Think simple, breezy and faded. The beauty is in the simplicity.

A VERY PRIVATE AFFAIR Brigitte Bardot’s tousled allure is undeniable and A Very Private Affair is no exception. With her signature, slept-in bouffant and sultry elegance, the bombshell played an aspiring ballerina-come-famous-actress in the sixties film. This wasn’t a far cry from her own career – Bardot initially trained as a ballet dancer before breaking the acting world at 18. And ballet is back on the scene with Mary Helen Bowers’ brainchild, Ballet Beautiful, the most graceful workout around. Her students include the likes of Miranda Kerr and Natalie Portman but now extend to even mere mortals with her cult classes broadcast live online. But pirouettes and legwarmers aside, Brigitte Bardot’s full skirts cinched in at the waist and silk headscarves tied nonchalantly under the chin make for the perfect scenes of the French Riviera. And be it with a simple cat eye or messy choucroute take a cue from Brigitte next time you’re getting dressed and channel that je ne sais quoi.

E ROYAL TENENBAUMS No one does sullen seventies better than Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tenenbaums. Cocooned in Fendi mink and flanked by blunt, blonde hair, she moped and smoked in bathtubs and on rooftops. Notorious secrecy and “decades of betrayal, failure and disaster” make her the perfectly morose daughter of the dysfunctional Tenenbaums. Emulate Paltrow’s seductive reticence with heavy kohl-rimmed eyes and classic cotton Lacoste tennis dresses. And, if you’re prepared to splurge, opt for supple, toffee fur. Second-hand should not be underestimated– any fur worth buying keeps well. As for accessories, keep them demure: nondescript loafers and a muted brown Birkin. Though ultimately it is that ironic-absurdist paragon which Wes Anderson captures so symmetrically that brings his characters to life. So, when you’re clipping in your red barrette, remember no rendition is complete without a touch of apathy.
