Boating, what future?
F
arewell to Confindustria Nautica forever. This is the message from some of the big Italians of the industry, finally slamming the doors on Ucina: "Too immobile" and thus arriving in a permanent position in the Italian Boating, an association created one year ago. A sharp tear, opening up new scenarios in the geopolitics of the Italian nautical industry, also in view of the great events yet to come on this year’s calendar, beginning with the Genoa Boat Show to be held in September. Now it is clear that there are two big opposing groups contending for the leading role in the industry. And the greatest risk is that in facing each other, in political terms, each could lose sight of the reality of things and therefore sacrifice some of the vitally important issues for boating itself in the name of Leadership. This then creates a not so insignificance impasse: who will be the main contact with the Government? Will it be the historic Confindustria or newly formed Association? On the one hand there is the coat of arms, from the other large groups. What will happen is totally unpredictable. Diplomacy is at work, but repairing the break is a complicated task. The risk of going into a stalemate is huge and it’s known that in times like these that a lack of decisive action is harmful, this has been said also by the 15 who dropped out. Let’s not make the same mistake.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH FRANCESCO MORANDI
The regional councilor for tourism: willing incentives and strategies for the island to play a leading role in domestic and international markets
C
ouncilor FMorandi what is the state of health within Sardinia’s tourism sector? “The tourism in Sardinia is in excellent health, both from the point of view of the appeal of Sardinia as a destination and its subsequent positioning on the national and international markets, both in terms of the structures that offer tourism and for the territory itself. This is clearly shown by the official data: in the last two years the number of tourists on the island has increased by around 20 percent compared to 2013. Last year, arrivals in Sardinia reached two million six hundred-thousand, with just over twelve million five hundred- thousand visitors present in guest accommodation, nearly a million more than the previous year. Operators have shown that they can react to the difficulties of the past and the Region has inve-

sted significant resources to the promotion of regional tourism, both nationally and on the international market, with excellent results in the target markets: the Germanspeaking countries (Germany, Switzerland and Austria, in particular), the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Eastern European countries. The start of the season in 2016 was a test passed with flying colors, recording a
trend of arrivals and the presence of further growth. The forecasts are encouraging and hint at a great continuation thanks to foreign arrivals, with a lengthening of the season until the end of October”. Sardinia in the collective imagination means one of the most beautiful seas in the world. A great resource,

but also a limit? In short, to say Sardinia is to say only the sea, or is there something more? “The sea-seaside is our flagship product, a staple of the regional tourism in terms of attractiveness and generated numbers, around which we are structuring a series of products related to excellence and to the island's peculiarities. Our repositioning within the market is based on a new strategy that brings the extraordinary quality of life in Sardinia to the center, the unique combination of various qualifying dimensions. The products that complement and support the sea are essentially those related to the environment and nature, with the enhancement of the itineraries in the protected areas of the island; culture and identity, around which we have defined a program of regional events with a three-year plan; the quality of agricultural produce and food, with a number of wine tasting tours; and
active tourism: Sardinia is a perfect platform for all outdoor sports and for sea-sport tourism. Among the proposals we also find nautical tourism, a key segment for the island, for which the region is willing to invest and plan, such as at the recent first Forum of nautical tourism held in Olbia a month ago, which offered valuable guidance for system operations and promotional activities. The task now is to fully exploit the sector and to reinforce the themes chosen as part of a strategy to create new travel motivations and diversify flows of tourism throughout the year and throughout the region”. Which are the policies that the Regional Government is implementing to ensure that the tourism sector will continue to be one of the drivers of the local and national economy? “In the last two years the Department of Tourism, Handicraft and
Commerce have invested effective national communication campaigns and on target markets, crediting and accompanying operators in the market through international fairs and events. The structuring of specific products is also seen fit, referring to various seasons of the year, of which I have mentioned before, as part of a complex and articulated plan, which has been anticipated by some preventive actions. These include the launch of the promotion of new holiday themes, complementing the seaside, through the airport system: for the first time the three Sardinian ports are expressed in a common language, through the promotion of a synchronised image and the creation of travel motivations, valuing the peculiarities of each territory, with the common matrix of a high level Sardinian product. The goal is to generate interest on what to do in Sardinia on arrival and retain departing travelers”.
www.tendenzenautiche.it
Many tour operators, particularly those related to the sea and its variations, have been complaining for some time that the tourist season is particularly short. What could be put in place, because also in Sardinia the arrival of tourists can be accepted most of the year and not just in the summer? “Given the strong seasonality, the action of the Region has focused on expanding activity from May to October through a series of actions to encourage the opening of businesses and tax relief on labor costs, accompanied by a series of promotional activities, both traditional and innovative. From this point it has programmed a seasonal adjustment plan for 2017-
2018, even more ambitious, because it provides an extended season from April to November. There are plenty of incentives to businesses, thanks to European funds available under the new program (2014-2020): the benefit of businesses that extend the opening period, for the promotion of the regional program of events to support the MICE segment and the 'encouragement of active tourism. In addition, there are new provisions relating to the environment and urbanism: anticipation of cleaning beaches and lengthening the period of installation of removable works on the coast. Naturally, as a result come a series of operations assigned to the municipalities, among which are free entry (or cost savings) to environ-
mental and cultural attractions, organization of a local transport system available to tourists, destination of the tourist tax towards the support of tourism activities and widespread conversion of properties for hospitality. Finally, the operations assigned to operators, consortiums and associations: enlargement of the opening period, creating open vouchers and tour packages, special offers for specific targets (wellness, family, sports), and collaboration in the promotion of offers”. Other issues raised by the operators is the expensive ferry to Sardinia. Does the Region have a plan in mind to moderate rates if deemed too costly? “The regional transport policy has very clear objectives in relation to the compliance with Community legislation, coordinating and reconciling the needs of tourism with that of the general mobility. A strategy that has brought the numbers of sea transport to those before the crisis, thanks to a new relationship with the shipping companies with whom we have shared strategies, objectives and actions in view of lengthening the season and the creation of new products and tour packages.. Now we face new contingencies as for low cost flights, which were important in the growth of foreign tourism. The region, in agreement with the operators, is working for the growth of the attractiveness of the territory so as to convince carriers to invest and increase the links, in order to increase the flow and offer the possibility of extending the season. Among the targeted projects, the aforementioned project for integrated collaboration with the regional airport system and the coordination of the Sardinian ports on the cruise tourism, which are rapidly expanding in Sardinia”.

numbers, due to the constant and significant increase.”

The mayor of Arzachena Alberto Ragnedda, interviewed in the July issue of Tendenze Nautiche, calls for a new cultural challenge for the Smeralda Coast and Sardinian tourism in general. It aims to give new life and a new dimension to the villages and natural archaeological sites, for example passing the creation of low emission zones for those towns or bringing attention to the historical treasures of the place. Do you think this is the right way? “Cultural tourism is the segment with the highest potential in terms of generation of arrivals and presence in the world and specifically in Italy. It is no coincidence that culture is one of the strategic axis on which the regional plans this seasonal adjustment. We focus strongly on archeology, art, culture, villages, food and traditional craft products, which are at the basis of our offer of experiential tourism; this is what the market wants and it is about as close to the quality of life found in Sardinia. In addition, for the first time in Sardinia, we have defined a threeyear planning program of identity, cultural events, entertainment, produce, crafts and sports, as well as
7
to guarantee for sure that there is support for events which are a powerful motivator to travel for our potential tourists. By providing certainty of funding it is easier to plan, and promoting events can also attract tourists in inland areas during the period of the whole year”. Porto Cervo and the Smeralda Coast: do you think they are actually used to their full potential for tourism purposes or should we try to conquer new market spaces? If so, how? “The Smeralda Coast hasalways been the vehicle for the promotion of the Sardinian brand throughout the world, and today more so than ever: its notoriety and its appeal must also be enhanced with a view to strengthening the tourism supply structure of the surrounding area, including inland Gallura, Sardinia, and the product as a whole. Gallura has regained the role of towing the regional tourist economy and again demonstrates the ability to anticipate trends, and manage the flow of tourists, especially international. It is also a reference model for the island's tourism policies, given its prospect of growth in international arrivals, up to the over the national tourism
What action would you suggest to the central government to make tourism the first major Italian agenda? “The expertise on tourism is still in the hands of the regions, sharing some market related objectives with the Government and with the re-established National Tourism Agency - ENIT - especially in positioning the Italian brand, the enhancement of the cultural attractions and the promotion of some international markets. The Pst (Tourism Development Program, ed) which will be finally adopted in September - to which the regions have contributed decisively - is an important first step to share the strategy which will be matched by concrete actions in the funding of promotion and creation of tourism initiatives and the strengthening of product supply. It must be then that the government intervene on the issue of seaside concessions, taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the recent judgment of the European Court of Justice to give certainty to business owners and allow major new investments to innovate in one of the more mature tourism sectors. Not only do we have many ideas but we have already put into practice concrete actions and will continue to do so in a well-structured and systemic context, according to the vision that Sardinia adopts the Regional Strategic Plan 2014-2016, based on its extraordinary quality of life”.
Francesco Morandi, aged 52, is the minister of tourism, Craft and Commerce of the Region of Sardinia. Out of the office, he is Professor of Tourism Law and the Law Navigation and Transport in the Faculty of Economics, at the University of Sassari.

.15am: we are in the Marinasarda office in Porto Cervo for the latest contractual formalities. The day is great, little wind blows and we have decided to take a trip to the archipelago of La Maddalena; a little piece of paradise made up of 7 islands which bridge between Sardinia and Corsica. At one time they were one, but the ice age left us these beads as an inheritance. We decide to rent a maxi tender, because they are fast boats that lend themselves to approach the coast, and we are a beautiful and cheerful company of 8 people. It’s 9.30am, we are leaving the rugged coastline of the Smeralda Coast. From Porto Cervo we sail for about 40 minutes northwest, meeting the island of Caprera, famous for the self-exile of Garibaldi after the unification of Italy. First stop, a splendid swim in the bay of Cala Coticcio, nicknamed from the "Tahiti" for its distinctive shape of granite rocks eroded by the wind and the incredible transparency of the water. We advance as much as possible along the narrow inlet that leads to the small strip of white beach. The colors are so intense that it hurts the eyes, and does not even seem to be in Italy, but in some remote paradise of the Pacific or the Caribbean. Between a dive and a swim it was already midday, and we must continue to explore other wonders. On the way we see that Caprera, like the others, are almost uninhabited islands, where the nature is wild. But what is striking are the rocks that, because of the strong winds,

have been changed to such an extent to have taken human or animal forms.Between one discussion and another, we start to become rather peckish, and under the signaling of our captain, we make our way closer to Porto Massimo for lunch, like the pashas to the "Cliff", where we served excellent Vermentino, and the dishes are accompanied by unmissable carasau bread, "guttiau", seasoned with olive oil, salt and rosemary. The temptation is great, but we opt for a light lunch so we can continue our adventure without missing anything. The navigation continues slower because it gets into the heart of the nature park, and we head north to the northernmost islands of Razzoli, Budelli and Santa Maria. Here we all admire the view in awe. We are at the Manto della Madonna, a natural swimming pool dotted with granite rocks of all shapes and sizes. To recount the beauty of this seaside stretch is unnecessary, because what is striking is the jagged backdrop and the many shades of blue and green interrupted by the white, beige and pink rocks. In the distance Corsica is visible and makes you want to reach it, but after another refre-

shing swim, we decided to continue our journey homeward. The sun is now declining, and slowly we sail along the islands of Spargi and La Maddalena. Here you can still see the remains of what was a NATO military base, until a few years ago, and now resembles a ghost town. At this point it’s sunset, but we make one last stop. This time it's the hour for a worldly aperitif in "Phi Beach", in Baja Sardinia. From here, the view is of the archipelago is en-
chanting, considered by many a tabloid as one of the places where you see the most beautiful sunsets in the world. The sun is behind the grandeur of La Maddalena, and it is time for us to return to port. On the way back we converse with the captain showing us the bear rock illuminated by the headlights at the top of the mountain. There appears to be a face peering through and we vow to come back soon to this magical and wild place.

Sicily still little known is that which extends from Dubrovnik to Syracuse: carob trees, prickly pears, almond trees, olive trees, with an African sea in the background. Kilometers of rolling sand dunes, stretches of white, yellow and ocher sand, interrupted by bays, islands, headlands, castles, towers, tuna traps, and fishing villages. This is the arid and barren Sicily by Andrea Camilleri. And it is here, in the lands of the Baroque, where Montalbano came to life. The appointment is in Donnalucata, a tiny village that comes alive with the arrival of the fishing boats and the fish market. Also along the coast going west is the Natural Reserve ‘Foce dell'Irminio’, an inhabited river, in Pliny the Elder times, by the god Mercury (Hermes in Latin, hence the name): It is a wonderful oasis for walking between reeds, agaves and bougainvilleas. And then more beaches, like that of the nearby Marina di Ragusa, except partly with seaside facilities, where you can dine by candlelight on the beach. A long stretch of fine sand and enchanting sea; among the most beautiful spots on the island, complete with resettled Moroccan palm trees, family cycling, and music; full of pubs, bakeries, and little shops. Heading south-east, between stone walls, fields of almond trees and prickly pears, along the coast towards Borgo Sampieri beaches stretch for tens of kilometers without unsightly crowds, if not on the mid-August weekend. In Cava d'Aliga, another location of the inspector, the sea is almost always in movement due to a light breeze, the heat is African but dry and bearable, the sand as soft as talcum powder. On the east coast, the Vendicari Nature Reserve is a delight in any season. You get there by following the signs to Noto-Pachino, or from the south doubling Cape Passero. From the entrance you reach the sea on foot, between the vegetation distinctively marked by wind and salt air; the tuna farm along with the watchtower above were abandoned in the forties. Among heather, juniper and tamarisk, you arrive at Cala delle Mosche (Cala of the Flies). Light green reeds occupy what was once the mouth of a river and the rock, shaped by the wind, frames the white sand that flows into the turquoise sea. Clear light sand, and salt water rich with amberjack, gray mullet, and bream. The only point of respite at the entrance of the protected area offers drinks and a bit of fish in the shade of the carob trees. Continuing in

The ten most expensive beaches in Italy according to Codacons: in Venice for one day you can pay up to 355 euro. Porto Cervo is in fourth place di Tatiana Scarinci

ifi on the beach, luxury catering service direct to your sun lounger, a safe to secure your jewelry, custom beach towels, cell phone charging, and exclusive access. We are not talking about luxury hotels. The new fashion is the exclusive beach, where to access it you pay up to 350 Euros per day. So, this year, here are the 10 most expensive beaches in Italy, where the sea, in some locations, is particularly "salty". This is the word of Rienzi, president of Codacons which carried out the survey. The queen of the expensive beaches in the Bel Paese is
Venice, "Spiaggia Des Bains", the hut with a sun lounger bed, 2 sun lounger chairs, a coffee table, 4 chairs and 3 beach towels where you pay up to 355 Euros per day. If you think it's the most expensive destination in Sardinia, Porto Cervo is surprisingly only fourth with 250 euro for a day at sea; It is preceded by the Tuscan Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi. Following closely are the beaches of Lerici with 230 euro per day, and Argentario, where a tent with 4 beds, a chair, a chest, and 4 beach towels cost 120 euro. Salento, Capalbio and Capri come further down the list, where 1 bed costs 28 euro. The data points towards research in the deve-
lopment of services in the luxury niche, a sector that has never been known to bend downward, and if anything, strengthened despite the global crisis. The search engine for vacation trips Kayak.it analyzed their data to show the favorite beaches for summer getaways this summer 2016, which sees double-digit growth in the desire for a beach holiday in Italy, both among foreigners (+ 36% ) and among Italians (+ 19%). And in the face of an ever increasing demand there is a new found need to be prepared, and do it well. Diversifying is the key word, but for the peace and tranquility of the summer sea in Italy you pay dearly.

The general confederation of Central Sardinian Industry joins together six nautical businesses, thus demarking a venture which brings about new developments
atitude Arbatax is born, the first true network of nautical businesses within the Ogliastra market. Six companies take part in this agreement, and together these will have at their disposal a total revenue of 7.5 million Euros and a work force of 109 employees. Latitude Arbatax has been conceived and promoted by the general confederation of Central Sardinian Industry, and the initiative which can be found at the tourist port of Arbatax remains open to new partnerships. Indeed, whomever would like to join this network will be more than welcome to do so. At this point in time the companies
whom belong to this venture are: Turismar (Tourist port management), B. Metal (Fiberglass manufacturing, carpentry), Nautica Cls Design and Construction (nautical construction and maintenance services), Arbatax Boat Service (garaging, re-fitting, customisation, maintenance and assistance), Flamar Vacanze (touristic services), BC Marinasarda (yacht hire, services, assistance, customisation and re-fitting). One of the objectives of these six businesses is the creation of a unique brand, encompassing most aspects of the leisure yachting/sailing industry, which is set to favour the market alongside other sectors, through domestic as well as international action.
Latitude Arbatax will also pay great attention to accessing new foreign markets and take part in innovative projects, focusing on technological research and development. The beacon to follow will be the growth of tourism, one which can find connections to the local realities. According to the data provided by the press conference - in which the president of the general confederation of Central Sardinian Industry, Roberto Bornioli, as well as the entrepreneurs behind the businesses involved, took part - Sardinia comes in at the ninth place in terms of business and employment within the Italian nautical industry.

CEO Giuseppe Ghezzi: Already working towards 2017, we will bring forth new boats and new services
igh level boating, and more importantly ecology. Giuseppe Ghezzi (in the adjacent picture), Navy Stars' CEO - firm operating in the financial service markets specialising in the recovery, re-fitting, and management of charter companies and their assets has a very clear mission: " We have acquired 51% of Bc srl - Marinasarda of Porto Cervo, and our business has expanded into the world of yacht hire, as well as constructing our own crafts. The guidelines which inspired us are basically two: being able to offer high quality boats and services, and respecting the marine environment". All this can be translated in 'throughout our search for new solutions regarding the environment, we have aimed to create boats powered by hybrid engines, so to reach those en-
chanted places where navigation of normal yachts is forbidden. It's been two years since our technicians have began researching ecological engines, and I can assure you that they will bring about an absolute innovation ". In the mean time the construction of new boats in the shipyards of Arbatax and Castellammare di Stabia, carries on, " we are building - explains Ghezzi - two 18 meter vessels which will be unveiled this spring, as well as a 22 and a 25 meter vessels which will see the light at Cannes in 2017". And next year will be decisive for Marinasarda as well as the other business hubs located throughout the Mediterranean. " There are no doubts, 2017 will bear the fruit to all the good work we have done to date throughout this season. Marinasarda saw a 20% increase in revenue which is in line with our expectations - underlines the CEO - and the objective for next year
is to increase it's revenue a further 20%, with the Marinasarda business model which will be also applied to the Santa Maria di Leuca hub (as of recent here we have founded a business under the name: 'Armatori salentini'), where we will make readily available boats which will be able to complete itineraries including the greek islands. We will then strengthen Castellammare and thus the Napoletan Gulf". However, 2017 could also bring along some more great news: "We are working towards bringing Latitude back to working order, also knows as Hitler's boat. It's restoration is a work in progress undergone in the shipyards of Arbatax, and when it will be ready it will be used for spring cruises, seen as we are talking about a 40 meter boat able to complete greater itineraries and offering on board the best services", Ghezzi gave us his word.

Farewell from the big brands of Confindustria
Kayaking for “The sea that unites”
Azimut, Baglietto, Perini and Ferretti and eleven other big brands coming out of Confindustria. The reason? "The organization is motionless and old." So on July 22nd it has taken the final farewell of the great brands of the Italian Nautical Association of Industrialists. After quitting Ucina Confindustria Nautica a year ago, creating the Italian Nautical Association, the main industry groups (including Azimut, Baglietto, Perini and Ferretti) definitively leave the organization. Ucina responded to the decision of the fifteen calling it "surreal".
Veterinarians, researchers and volunteers of "The sea that unites", aboard kayaks, reached the shore of Tunis. The message that they brought is that of peace through food security and the promotion of mediterraea diet. The kayaking group left from Agropoli on June 25th and drove along the landing migration routes. “Our goal - said Raffaele Bove, president of the association - is to strengthen intercultural dialogue between different realities, from an element that unites all: the Mediterranean diet”.
BOATING STARTING FROM GENOA
T
he Genoa Boat Show is expected very positive results this year. At least according to UCINA Confindustria Nautica forecasts. The 56th edition of the International Boat Show will take place between the 20th and the 25th of September and, despite the controversy that shook the world of sailing in the last days of July that led to the exiting of 15 major brands from Confindustria, the show is shaping up with positive numbers: 21% increase in participation confirmations from 2015, an increase in investment of exhibitors by 57%, an increase of 5% of the sailing boats on display and, last but not least, a return of many foreign brands. "We believe - says the president of UCINA, Carla Demaria, during the presentation of the exhibition July 25th - that the Boat Show is what the industry needs. It has held its own in very difficult situations with the collapse of sales of boating from 2008 to 2014 and there are now the best conditions for the re-start, with a predicted 7.5% of nautical sales growth in 2016".

CO2: the fish also suffer
The chemical change in the waters of the terrestrial sphere, caused by increased atmospheric CO2 emissions, affects fish reproduction. It has been demonstrated in a study conducted at the University of Palermo following the underwater volcanic emissions on the island of Vulcano. The research, published in the journal Royal Society Proceedings B, revealed that the male maintains a level of paternity similar to the current carbon dioxide concentrations and, says researcher Marco Milazzo, "The reduced ability to mate in high CO2 conditions is a cause for concern".
Posted on August 5, the dossier "The Last Beach" by WWF paints a negative picture of the situation of the Italian seas: more than two thousand kilometers of coastline have been cemented over the past 50 years, along with the critical over-exploitation of fisheries and mining of hydrocarbons. The dossier identifies four strategic areas from which to start: The Ligurian Sea and the Tuscan archipelago, The Channel of Sicily, The Northern Adriatic Sea and the Otranto Channel areas are of particular value for biodiversity and present a high level of natural environment.
