talian boats have been sailing for years in the wake of the serious international crisis which has so changed the commercial and business paradigms of the entire industry. We are experiencing tentative signs of recovery, thanks mainly to foreign capital. However, to hope to return to the numbers of the nineties is unrealistic, and those on the inside of this line of work know it. In this environment, to make a difference will once again be the taste of the challenge to bring new ideas and the ability to offer services and highprofile technologies. It is within this difficult and fascinating context that Tendenze Nautiche will be able to report the themes of sailing and the sea with precision and authority, offering the latest news and topics for discussion, with perhaps a different slant, so as to contribute (for our part) in bringing to light a new way of giving impetus to the sector. A bit like we have done in this issue by offering the new hybrid engines that will be mounted on boats to safeguard the well-being of our seas. But Tendenze Nautiche will also have the pleasure of recounting true hidden gems and real tourist paradises, suggesting trips and excursions of your dreams; parting from our very own beach and our very own city, like we did with Porto Cervo, the Smeralda Coast and the island of Capri.

That’s how Porto Cervo appears, the perfection of it’s sights almost intimidate the eye of the beholder, however once you visit you are quickly overwhelmed by the curiosity to explore and learn more about this place, which is so sought out and loved by the world’s rich and famous. Here, tranquillity and order are dominant within the ports gentle tones. Whilst being touristic, Porto Cervo still remains an exclusive and refined location, where it's abundance can be enjoyed peacefully. It's buildings seem to have been dug out from the stone, one of the many ways in which luxury meets tradition. It's celebrated history can be traced back to the 1960s, when prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the head of a powerful financial empire, decided to purchase the lands in this corner of Gallura, and conceived the construction plans aimed at luxury tourism. In 1967 the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club was born as a sports association with ties to the Yacht de Monaco and the New York Yacht Club, and as it's symbol it holds the Burgee adopted in 1975, with a concave red superellipse shape with white borders on a blue backcloth. Further down the line in the 80s, the new port construction began, which allowed for larger spaces and added comfort with the capacity to accommodate 700 places. he Costa Smeralda is the stunning backdrop, Marinasarda with its yachts and its boats takes care of everything else. ft is since 1964 that the company - commissioned by the Aga Khan - who is based also in Porto Cervo brings dream holidays to life for those who decide to rely on its boats and exclusive crew, capable of orgamemorable nizing excursions that go well beyond Sardinia and Gallura, but also arrive in Corsica and Capri. It will remain so during this summer of 2016, which has already begun. There are more than fifteen boats that make up the fleet, and for the true boating enthusiasts there is

also the availability of some big shots such as the Mangusta 72 and the Maori 50. In short, boats of the highest standards that meet the highest demands. But Marinasarda brings more than just the boats, for example it is able to arrange private flights and car journeys too. What’s more, it boasts a privileged relationship with major hotels in Porto Cervo and the Smeralda Coast, beginning with Cervo Hotel, Hotel Cala di Volpe, Hotel Pitrizza and Hotel Romazzino. In 2015 51% of Marinasarda was purchased by the company Navy Stars which also boasts a shipyard in Arbatax. An acquisition that could also mean a future development

with the opening of new offices located in the MediterMeanwhile ranean. Marinasarda this year, under the name of Latitude, will also be present in Salento, more precisely Santa Maria di Leuca, and will ensure excursions to and from Capri. The goal for the summer of 2017 will instead be to land in Ibiza, again under the Latitude brand. This indeed means that it is time for the Sardinian society to take the leap, taking on a new dimension, riding the signs of recovery that Italian boating is registering after many a dark year, even if 60% of the clients come from outside of Italy. Regardless, looking at bookings of this year it is clear that Sardinia is taking back its historical appeal.

Green boats for cleaner seas www.tendenzenautiche.it

Green is better A taxi-boat with a hybrid engine in the lagoon of Venice

di Barbara Ferrari

Electrical and Hybrid engines have arrived Allowing for a completely new navigation Fausto Colombi is the creator

T

wo thousand two hundred after Archimedes' principle according to which "a body immersed in a fluid becomes lighter from the bottom upwards equal to the weight of the displaced fluid volume" a daredevil engineer, not new to boating, decided to develop this concept to experiment a vessel capable of reducing the waves created by the hull sailing navigation. The idea came from the need to defend cities like Venice at risk, every year, of enormous structural damage precisely due to the wave motion. The engineer Fausto Colombi, more commonly known as the founder of ‘Cantieri di Sarnico’, has thus created a boat with a special hull able to cut through the water in a different way. "Crushing" the wave reduces the impact on the sea thanks to the thrust axis propeller, held perfectly horizontally, parallel to the water line. But that's not all; the boats which are designed and manufactured between Brescia and Bergamo, in that of Lake Iseo, are even able to reduce noise pollution. How? With the use of pure electric engines, or hybrids. Boats so completely "green" not

only meet the growing need for environmental protection, but in addition greatly benefit the pockets of those who own them. In fact, with no diesel to pay, their wide production range includes both working models, and those of pleasure. They are, therefore, useful for boating in fresh water, such as canals and lakes, as well as in marine waters. The versatility of use of these hulls also provides for the possibility of creating a tender model to land on protected beaches. But the flexibility of use and the fact that they are "totally green" are not the only features that make it a unique and somewhat different nautical product. Even the on-board comfort is outstanding: powerfully navigated with engines working purely on electricity, and the positive feeling of there being no noise emissions, or black fumes. Navigation is accompanied simply by the hum of the electric motor, mixed with the sound of the lapping waves; which are already reduced by 20-30 percent according to preliminary calculations on tested or sold boats. The performance, too, stands out for its excellence in what could become the flagship of Italian boa-

ting. A vessel of 9 meters with purely electrical motorization reaches 22 knots. With only fifty kilograms of engine weight and fifty centimeters more of overall dimension of the motors, attained performances are similar to those which would be provided with conventional engines. And last, but not least: the design. Strong nautical aesthetic taste matured with 40 years of experience, the Colombi engineer has not neglected the "detail" and the sense of beauty in the slightest. The planned steering mechanism has therefore not lost its original structure to traditional engines. It has been produced with a single control lever, which, positioned under the console switch allows for a simple change between the electrical mode, to the diesel, to the hybrid (a booster that combines the two modes of propulsion power). In addition to this, the motor can also be used as an electrical generator. The great "nautical thinker" Fausto Colombi, it seems, did not leave anything to chance; and seeing boating from another point of view, he has created a “made in Italy” project that proudly works its way in the waves of sailors from all around the world.

Italian Sailing The crisis and the signs of recovery THE POINT

T

rying to discover the nautical patterns in Italy under the economic crisis, five years in, is no easy feat. But this consideration has its right to exist with Italy having always been considered, nautically thinking, as a country of saints, poets, and navigators. For three quarters of the Italy’s territory is soaked with the sea. The Italian coasts are rich in natural beauty, in boating docks and natural harbors. It is with this natural beauty that the coasts of certain parts of Sicilia, Campania, Puglia and Sardinia guarantee the return of nautical tourism. However, it must be said that the international economic crisis has had its effect on Italy, too, and its sector of Italian recreational boating. Up until the start of the Italian crisis it was number one for its style, quality and revenue in Europe. The overall figures of the sector highlight the situation facing the industry. From 2008 to 2012, the total turnover generated by the shipyard fell from 6.2 billion euro to 3.1 billion with a further decrease in the order of 18% in relation to 2013, amounting to 2.54 billion. The sale of outboard motors has gone from 30,000 units in 2008 to just under 11,000 in 2013. Then we went up to 12,300 in 2014 and 14,000 in 2015. The Italian market is, and will be, however, always one of the most important markets in Europe for the marine industry and for the remarkable economic effect that it generated. Through this, a trend has been revealed that appears to be responding to a new-found trust in the sector. This same trust that boosted the strategy of protecting the market, made the most important shipyards and the most important dealers of boats and engines, without abandoning ship even when Italy sold very little. New trust, and a growth of sales revenues, even if minimum, in a strongly penalized sector, seen even from a minimalist viewpoint of what is known to be the real value of the nautical market. A value that never truly takes into consideration the real knockon effect created by the sector. The tendency, however, seems to be the growth as even the producers of boats in Eastern Europe have conquered the market of Northern Europe, through believing in themselves, and the Chinese that are increasing their investments in the marine sector, buying in the shipyards of France; all confirming this trend. Above all else, the confirmation comes from the Chinese population, that, unlike the Italian population, is not famous for being lovers of the marine or nautical sectors, yet is decidedly known as receptive and intuitive about the trends in world economy.

sidered the pearl of the Mediterranean, a place where the world meets in the summer to admire its beauty and make a holiday considered among the most exclusive of the world. Leaving by boat from the port of beautiful Naples, Capri is located 17 miles south east and is set in the wonderful scenery of the coast and the archipelago that includes the volcanic islands, the Sorrento peninsula and the Amalfi coast. Everywhere you look, the view is always different but exceptionally stunning. The island is a natural extension of the Sorrento peninsula, with which it shares the natural contour. Capri juts from the sea with 2 mountain ends. For each mountain, its own district: that of Capri, on top of which lies the remains of the

Villas of the Roman Emperor Tiberius; and that of Anacapri and the beautiful Solimena mountain, where from the peak, with the aid of a lift, a 360° view of the entire coast of Campania, and the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea may be admired. Over the centuries, Capri has been a favorite destination of the jet-setters of all ages. The only point of call is that of Marina Piccola, where the port was built only at the beginning of the 900s, bringing the island a jump to modern times and an influx of people, of whom it can barely contain. Most of those who come to Capri arrive in the morning with hydroplanes and ferries, relentlessly coming and going from Naples and from the coast, filling the town and its narrow streets until senset when they part once more. In high season the number of people on the island goes up to a staggering 80.000 per day. But for those who stay, it is here that the real Capri reveals itself. Just when the crowds have left space for the narrow, winding streets, rich in scents of bougainvillea flowers, wisteria and lemon trees, and wrapped with the soft lighting of street lamps in the pathways; it is here that the island comes to life in a whole new way. Seeing is believing. The Marina is very small and can only accommodate boats of medium size. But there are many maxi-yachts of every shape and

Meeting one another in the unmissable Piazzetta, or ‘small square’, to sip an aperitif and get noticed, to dine beneath the arches of lemon trees or outdoors enjoying the Bay of Naples with its thousands of lights and the ever present Vesuvius, et voila! ...Italian-style fun (or more correctly, that of Italian clichés that we have been so good at spreading throughout the world). King of all Capri evenings is "Anema e Core" (or, “Heart and Soul”) that, since the years of the Hollywood boom, continues to entertain both ordinary people and personalities of the jet setting world such as Sophia Loren, Mastroianni, Toto, the legendary Peppino di Capri, models, showgirls, singers, musicians and so on and so forth right up until the break of dawn. It is not a nightclub… it is a tavern like they used to have in the 60's, whose live music made everybody sing and dance. Capri has always maintained its strong character. It bends to the will of tourism and money, but does not break. Here the islanders are in control. They stand out with their traditions and ways of life. A magical place of flavors and unique features of that Italian stronghold that, over time, has perhaps been somewhat forgotten, yet continues to live here in all its glory.

Water and mental health

Climate, five islands submerged

Water and psychological distress: a study has proven that the sea and the ocean help to improve mental health. The research made by the American Michigan State University reported, through the website of the magazine In a Bottle (www.inabottle.it), that it held the purpose of establishing the effect of the nature on anxiety and depression. The researchers thus compared the mental health statistics of people living in different areas. What they discovered is that the major weakening effect of psychological distress was found in those who live in places with a sea view.

Five small Pacific Ocean islands have been submerged by the sea, accelerated as a result of climate change. This was revealed by a team of Australian researchers who studied the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Here, since 1994, the water level has risen by about 10 mm per year. The submerged islands were not inhabited but there are six more threatened by coastal erosion. One of these is Nuatambu, on which live 25 families. The islands are considered the first "victims" of a rise in sea levels due to global warming.

I

BUDELLI IS PUBLIC

t was last month that the island of Budelli was sentences to return to the park of La Maddalena: "The island is public and the remains within the authority of the park. It was here that the judge of real estate executions of Tempio, Alessandro di Giacomo, closed the judicial auction process that weighed on this natural paradise famous for its pink sand beach. The island of Budelli, in fact, had been auctioned off, as a reward, firstly to a Milan-based company, then it failed; following this, the New Zealand tycoon Michael Harte, 49, chief executive of Barclays Bank, took it for the "modest "figure of three million euro. After a legal battle that followed the acquisition of the small island, in which persistent constraints prevented construction projects, Harte took a period of reflection before he completed the purchase, and in February of this year, finally, declared his intention to give up. With the return of the Sardinian gem to the Park authority, however, there has been a clash over how and with what resources to manage the nature reserve. Fun fact: the island is inhabited by a single person, who is also the guardian.

Blue Flags beach 2016

Portofino, green idea

The square of Portofino and its port will be illuminated in the coming months, by a buoy. The structure, built by the Piedmont Italvalv will produce electricity through the movement of the sea and the sea breeze. Already dubbed "smart buoy", the idea of green energy is coming to some of the young people of the village, who created the service company "Portofino 360". The plant has three systems and uses the surface wave, the vertical floating movement and a wind power system for the breeze. In its initial phase it is thought to produce around 10 kwatt.

Blue Flags 2016: the list of awarded Italian beaches lengthens. 2016 saw152 municipalities registered (five more than in 2015) for a total of 293 beaches (there were 280 last year) and 66 harbours. Liguria is confirmed as first region, followed by Tuscany and Marche. The others, in succession: Campania, Puglia, Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Lazio, Sardinia, Sicily, Calabria, Molise, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Basilicata. What's more, the 2015 flags for lakes are re-appointed for: Lombardy, Piedmont and Trentino Alto Adige.
