A resource called tourism

T

ourism is undoubtedly the greatest economic resource of our country. But no one has ever really managed to make the driving force of Italian entrepreneurship. And if we think of the artistic and cultural heritage, and the landscape we possess, then it becomes clear that something is not working and has not worked as it should. Which other European country, or of the world, is able to focus upon so many treasures and thus make a display? And one of the biggest treasures is the sea in all its forms. Wonderful cities and fairytale coasts, starting with those of Sardinia and Sicily, to name the two largest islands, should ensure enough revenue in the industry of tourism to allow for three quarters of Italy (so much touched by the sea) to independent living accommodation and the related services connected with seaside activities. And not to mention the shipbuilding industry, which should be a pillar to the industry as a whole. However, it is not. Indeed, many areas of the country, especially in the south, are still deprived, therefore resulting in a lack of opportunities given by local institutions who are thus unable to reverse the trends (despite the positive signals that are being recorded) and seafaring is far from pre-crisis times. The Government promises aid for a quick recovery, so long as there is an imaginable way to make tourism into a true industry.

The Ucina Convention

The Assilea data indicates a reboot also from the internal market: in the first five months of 2016 the leasing contracts grew by 44% Undersecretary Baretta confirms commitment of Government support for the sector

T

he Ucina Satec Convention 2016, annual meeting of UCINA Confindustria Nautica, which represents an important opportunity to explore the issues most important in the sector, was held in Venice this year. Here it was seen to take a look into future matters. The work began with the presentation of the Olympic candidature of Rome 2024 illustrated by the brand manager, Pierfrancesco Micara, and the Olympic tribute to Italy that will be hosted on the occasion of the 56th edition of the Genoa Boat Show from the 20th to the 25th of next September. After the initial greeting from the assessor at the Tourism of Venice, Paola Mar and Simone Cason del Casinò of Venice, it was the secretary for the Economy and Finance, Pier Paolo Baretta, to bring greetings from the Government. The debate addressed the hot topics of the industry: the market, the simplification of procedures, the nautical leasing, incentives to businesses, measures to boost the supply chain. The industry is starting to show different signs of recovery as evidenced by Assilea - data presented in preview from the general manager, Gianluca De Candia - who also outlined a restart of the internal market and a positive effect of the Boat Show with a + 50% of contracts after the event. Compared to the same period last year, in the first five months of 2016 the Italian nautical leasing contracts grew by 44% in number and

26% in value (+ 30% when considering only pleasure yachts, without rentals), confirming the momentum recorded downstream from the Genoa boat Show. Positive data also for small boating highlighted by the sale of outboards: in the last two years there has been an increase of 40%. Today, in this segment, Italy grows more than Germany, France and Spain. The positive trend is confirmed by the data reported by Maria Pia Monteduro, general manager of the Finance Department, which highlight how in 2015 there was a strong increase in production, registered by VAT receipts and the nautical exports to the United States. In his speech he recalled the incentives and business support provided by the Government. Such as the super amortization and less well known Patent box, facilitation of trade names and patents. "The Italian industry - said Pier Paolo Baretta - needs to be supported upstream, at least in the development and protection of ideas. Made in Italy means quality and beauty, and for this we have thought through the appropriate tools." The competitiveness was the main topic of Marco Taisch’s intervention, professor at the Polytechnic of Milan - Department of Engineering Management - who explained how the future will be in 4.0 companies, reality digitized in the production process and the products themselves, able to utilize the information to make new business. Luca Costa Sanseverino, Co-Founder of F3Bas, professor at the Business School of Il Sole 24 Ore (24 Hour Sun), worked with various financial institutions and international organizations, and presented to the audience some concrete funding opportunities in foreign markets, with examples calibrated on small and micro Italian enterprises. Speaking of exports, intervened Ernesto Carbone, head of customs

and border trade regimes of the Customs Agency, who spoke of the Agency's new approach to the world of sailing, born through solicitation of the Association’s category. Among the first fruits, he recalled the adoption of the most recent circular that established the new procedure for export units which no longer requires the goahead from a non-EU country to ensure the successful exit from Community waters. "We have worked hard, but the list of demands to the government is

still important - concluded the president Carla Demaria: the electronic register of vessels - technically ready for two years, but still waiting for the implementation decree - which could be a source important revenue for the tax authorities; the definition of litigation involving the state concessions of marinas; the re-launch of the nautical leasing tool, an indispensable engine of growth for the sector; the export and internationalization opportunities and, in general, simplification and certainty of bureaucratic procedures". "I believe that thanks to the work of Ucina this important industrial sector has had some significant responses from the government” said Pier Paolo Baretta “ but the most important result I believe was to have established a climate of mutual trust. Today we talked about the future, this is fundamental in areas which qualify Italy worldwide. ""I am committed to working towards tackling the demands of the industry”, concluded the undersecretary, “by continuing to work together continuously alongside Ucina as in the past two years. The ability to trust and look to the future will be our weapons. "

The Mayor of Arzachena: the beauty of places is no longer sufficient to be attractive, it should be a real revolution and focus on art, archeology and quality of life in our villages

he Smeralda Costa is the refrain of a combination of sea and unbreakable tourism. But for some years now it is no longer enough to ensure that Sardinia, and in particular the northern tract, can play a leading role in the international landscape of tourist holidays. And so we need to push the boundaries, not geographic, but cultural. A new vision is needed, the same that allowed Alberto Ragnedda to win the title of Mayor of Arzachena four years ago.Ragnadda is a brilliant man. At the age of forty with English studies, he is the producer of one of the best wines of Sardinia, and is above all the man who has decided to give a face and a new direction to this wonderful territory. Alberto Ragnedda what does it mean to be Mayor of Smeralda Coast? "It means being challenged to manage a unique and magnificent territory. But at the same time the Smeralda Coast can either suffer or you can rule by managing certain dynamics. We have embarked on this second path." What do you mean?

“We noticed that the beauty of the place is no longer sufficient to determine our tourist seasons and give full significance to everything on offer, and so it is necessary to offer more. A new vision of the area is needed, and that of what it can offer to tourists. From here there are a number of related initiatives, above all in the world of culture and quality of life". So, Sardinia isn’t just sea... "No, there is also archeology, for example. The Arzachena archaeological park with its Tombs of the Giants is something on which to focus and on which to extend the tourist season in these areas. Our goal is to bring from 210 thousand to 500 thousand annual visitors. But there's more: we want to ensure that culture, entertainment and sport bring Arzachena and its location to life at least from Easter to New Year. If in July and August our sea makes us unique and attractive, targeted action is needed in the other months." Which initiatives have been put into action so far under your administration? "This is not simply about initiatives, but a real revolution, at least in these areas: we want to remove the

Alberto Ragnedda The Mayor of Arzachena

car from the towns and villages, we want to raise the quality of life of those who live here and the tourists coming to visit. And where we have already placed the redevelopment we have already received expressions of interest from those who have spent their holidays with us for years, asking to eventually buy real estate in these areas; thanks to our work we are experiencing a new springtime. I refer in particular to the Canniggione area. We want to bring people back to us by the sea throughout the year. Exclusive tourism is prosperous here, with so-called celebrities, but if we do not give way to families and citizens to fully enjoy these places we are destined to decline. Instead we are aiming for a new development and we want to do so with an increased sensitivity to beauty, culture and appreciation of our heritage". Do your colleagues, both mayors and leaders of the region, follow your view? "Yes, and above all the citizens follow us too, because I always want to share the application processes with them. Processes that they can imagine will bring a different and better future to Arzachena.

THE MARINASARDA “ORO NERO IS THE PERFECT COMBINATION OF DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE

T

di Barbara Ferrari

he Motor Yacht "Oro Nero" is the most recent acquisition of Marinasarda. A perfect combination of design, performance, sea efficiency and interior ergonomics, luxury and comfort. An expression of Italian style designed for maximum comfort on board. The yacht offers three cabins for 6 guests organized with a crew of two or three people. On the lower deck there is a lounge adjacent to the kitchen equipped with TV / DVD / stereo LCD with large area to eat and relax. Soft lighting and classy atmosphere are merged with the cherry wood essence that makes the environment pleasant also to the sight. The mix of warm, sunny colors, but also light, creates space and offers the pleasure of fun days and relaxing nights at sea. The kitchen is fully equipped to satisfy even the most refined palates. The crew are professional sea experts and are accomplished in bringing on-board ease. The electric hotplates, refrigerator with dispenser, ice maker, the gas oven and the microwave, and the dishwasher can be handled by the kitchen staff as in the best restaurants, offering tasty appetizers and special dinners, even at anchor. The yacht is in fact also equipped for night harboring without necessarily the

need to dock in ports. The cabin is well insulated from outside noise, has large portholes that allow air circulation, further guaranteed by air conditioning. En suite with shower, TV, large closets and large chests for clothing all add to the cabin space leaving nothing to envy from a hotel suite on the mainland, on the contrary, here in addition you find the charm of the sea wake. The bed is queen-sized, designed to bring the best nights rest as well as the space you need within the cabin, allows you to exploit the remaining space for the practicality of living. The other cabins, for guests, are equipped with TV, air conditioning and stereo. The VIP cabin also offers an en suite, such as showering facilities. The guest cabin has two twin beds. The crew area is separate, with separate access. The exterior of the yacht offers large sunbathing areas at both bow and stern. The main deck features a spacious lounge covered with a hard top, perfect for enjoying lunch and dinner. The wide plank platform provides easy access to the sea and to the garage, where dinghies and marine toys are kept. A holiday, therefore, in the sea, guaranteeing the same quality of those on ground. With one big difference, however, that the sea-view is guaranteed.

his year has marked the end of the campaign of the archaeological project "The garden of the Sirens" of the foundation Restoring Stabiae (RAS) of Castellammare di Stabia, counting an important discovery. Or rather two. Two wrecks, including one Junker, the famous threeengine of the German air force from the Second World War. The second is an ancient Roman shipwreck, containing a significant amount of wine amphorae, many of

di Tatiana Scarinci them still sealed. The latter discovery, will bring to light interesting avenues of research on trade, transit routes, and will extend the horizon of knowledge of wine from the Roman period. The finds have taken place in the heart of the Gulf of Naples, between Capri and Sorrento. A team of archaeologists and divers from the international agency Raid conducted four days of diving to depths of between 80 and 105 meters, finding the two wrecks and acquiring pictures and video footage of the discovery. We are told by the foundation Ras that divers conducted the first inspection on the wrecks, which are in good condition. In the Junker, the structure is still visible and the cart,

the remains of the fuselage and the cockpit all remain almost intact. The project "The sirens garden" consists of the first geophysical research in archaeological purposes conducted in a systematic way in a depth range of between 50 and 200 meters, in the area between Capri and Sorrento, and has been realized in partnership with a number of individuals and organizations. With the Superintendent of archaeological goods in the region of Campania; the underwater archeology department of the foundation Ras; the archaeologist Timmy Gambin (University of Malta); the Department of earth science; the University Federico II of Naples; the logistic support of the maritime compartment of Castellammare di Stabia; and the coast Guard and the crew of the Cormorant 5.

Cruises, a boom year

A steadily growing sector, Pierfrancesco Vago of Clia Europe: "We have an economic impact of 40.2 billion euro." Civitavecchia leader

he cruise ship industry is expanding in the Mediterranean. According to figures from Clia Europe, this has been a good year for the sector, and forecasts are growing. This is confirmed by Pierfrancesco Vago, chairman of Clia Europe. "Our economic impact precisely - has reached 40.2 billion euro, with 6.4 million European cruise passengers, almost 350 thousand jobs in Eu-

rope and shipyards that will produce 29 of 31 ocean cruise ships by 2018. Speaking of Italy, he added: "Five of the top ten ports in the Mediterranean for Italian traffic generated are: Civitavecchia, Venice, Naples, Savona and Genoa. Ten million cruise passengers are handled by our ports". Civitavecchia turns out to be the cornerstone for cruises in Italy, coming in first place for the presence of ships in its port. Currently undergoing an

extension, it is set to open the shipyard dedicated to smaller ships in 2017. In the last two years Venice went against the trend, decreasing the presence of passengers by 8.7%. This is attributed to stalled infrastructure, according to Valli, who suggests: "An alternative passage in Laguna bypassing the Giudecca Canal."He adds: "If no action is taken quickly, Venice risks losing its importance as a cruise port, together with the entire Adriatic Sea."

Whale watching between Caprera and the Strait of Bonifacio, where it possible to witness the sights of large cetaceans without being a professional diver di Barbara Ferrari THE TRIANGLE OF CETACEANS Here's a shot taken during an excursion organized by Orso Diving of Poltu Quatu who specialize specifically in going in search of the great whales that pass in the north of Sardinia. W

hale watching is definitely better known abroad than in Italy. But in reality there are places and Italian locations where no one would think to find, and sight, the most curious cetaceans in the world. Such as whales. One of these places, mainly known to divers on the inside and professional fishermen, is located north of Porto Cervo. And precisely in Caprera, where there is a sea canyon that reaches a thousand meters deep and it starts to get deep right near Caprera, then onward twenty miles after the Strait of Bonifacio, heading south. Here the seabed is rich in marine life and is therefore visited by many divers and lovers of the marine environment, and of course by professional fishermen. The "triangle

of cetaceans", as this marine area is called, is known for the oceanographic environment that, along with the currents of the Strait of Bonifacio, makes for the proliferation of krill, famously the favorite and principal food of whales. It is not difficult, therefore, to "bump" into finback whales, sperm whales and other marine species usually seen in many different locations around the world. In these areas of the sea you can also go deep sea snorkeling, with the sea depth at around one thousand meters, though those who choose to swim at the surface can still spot some fish or whales that are not found in other places in the middle of the sea. But yes, of course this kind of sighting can only happen in the middle of the sea. Both navigation and sightings "happen" in the waters out from the coast. You don’t necessarily

need to be a professional of the sea, a diver, a free diver or fisherman, but you must be a lover of the sea and its remoteness from the coast. The best known passage of whales worldwide, however, can be seen in the vicinity of Baja California, a narrow strip of land that extends from San Diego, starting from Tijuana and arriving in Cabo San Lucas. Territorially it would appear to be a territory belonging to the United States because it is a peninsula that stretches right from California, but in reality it belongs to Mexico. So, to also have a marine area such as this in Italian territory, that is famous also for the culture, the architecture, and the landscape in general, makes it even more fascinating to travel to the area Porto CervoCaprera. An experience to be included in anybody’s Italian "to do list".

Sardinian Seafaring, Development Plan Nautical tourism is an important weapon for the industry of holidays in Sardinia. This was the strongest message sent by the regional Primo Forum of the industry which was held on June 27 on Isola Bianca in Olbia, organized by the regional department of Tourism in collaboration with the Union of Chambers of Sardinian Commerce. The ultimate goal is to create a real nautical tourism District. The proposals will become immediately operational and will be the basis of a sector development plan with a minimum three-year program.

Vanguard for Nemo's Garden It was already at the forefront, but now Nemo's Garden has new frontiers; this is the experiment conducted in Noli, Liguria, where some scientists grow plants on the seabed: Today, underwater botanical gardens have become a modern laboratory with sensors, accelerometers, generated water collection, and the involvement of entities such as pharmaceuticals, from the University and from agriculture. The experiment of Nemo's Garden was created four years ago from the idea of Sergio Gamberini and started with the cultivation of basil 10 meters deep and no more than 100 meters from the coastline, to then open to other plant species.

ement, coastal erosion, bad sewage and garbage on the beaches. The present and the future of coastal areas in Italy have been illustrated in the Italian Environment Report 2016 by Legambiente, the volume presented in Rome on June 28. Disturbing figures have emerged from the Report: 51% of Italian coasts have been transformed into houses of which in recent decades have been built at the rate of eight kilometers per year; a third of the beaches are affected by erosion; 14542 offenses were detected in 2014 among which were crimes related to the sea and the coast (up from 2013); the marine habitat is increasingly polluted, with 25% of city wastes still not cleaned and only 19% of the coast is under the protection constraints. "The coasts are an extraordinary heritage of our country” - said Edward Zanchini, vice president of Legambiente and curator along with Sebastiano Venneri and Giorgio Zampetti volume – “which we must liberate from the pressures of concrete and pollution. The Environment Report presents a snapshot of these impacts with disturbing data and studies demonstrating that it is possible to reverse this situation only through a change of policy."

Feeling part of a crew makes you stronger and increases self-esteem. Thus was born the third edition of the project "At full sail against cancer", addressed to young patients of the pediatric hospital Bambin Gesù with oncological diseases. These children were hosted for four days on the Nave Italia, which the Foundation Tender of the non-profit organization Nave Italia Onlus dedicates to the recovery of people with mental and physical discomfort. In this edition there will be 3 "boardings." The other two will be held July 12 to 16 with "Epilepsy out of the shadows 2016" and from 4 to 8 October with "Kids onboard", with the participation of healthy siblings of children suffering from metabolic diseases.

As of the end of September the "Portopia" project, promoted by the European Commission will be up and realized with the participation of the European Sea Ports Organisation. The project is to create a great online platform that contains economic and statistical data of European ports and increases the communication and dissemination of results and knowledge gained through the EPO (European Ports Observatory).
