Sardinia, Boating and Major Events
T
he boating world has always been one of the strategic assets of the Italian Economy, even if it has suffered more than most from the great economic crisis in recent years. Signs of recovery have been felt for months and even the same associations will reap the effects. Now is the moment to take the leap to decide how to re-launch this sector. Nautica Italiana, of President Lamberto Tacoli, proposes to create a series of events in principal locations of the Italian sea and this, without a shadow of a doubt, will be fundamental. In this sense Sardinia, and in particular the Costa Smeralda, should most certainly be nominated to host at least one event. And this not only due to the fact that Sardinia holds one of the most beautiful seas on the planet and it is natural to imagine it framing such a nautical event, but mainly because this island is now ready to make the quantum leap that is set to project onto the high flying regions of Italy. The signals sent by the regional administration and the islander business community are very encouraging. Now we need the courage to dare. Which in other terms means opening the door to a new phase of enterprise policy, which is not to diversify the offer of tourism and, perhaps, to extend this blessed season that is still too tightly anchored to the summer. The challenge is on.

f you say Sardinia, say Porto Cervo. And then Sardinia Resorts of Smeralda Holding group of Tamin bin Hamad Al-Thani, ruler of the richest country in the world, Qatar. For four years the fund of the ruling family is the master of tourism in Sardinia and in particular the Smeralda Coast with its 4 hotels, among the most luxurious in the world, including the famous Cala di Volpe. The heritage also consists of the marina of Porto Cervo and the renowned greens of Pevero Golf Club, as well as 2,300 hectares of still immaculate land bordering the sea. After a period of settling in the rulers of Qatar have identified the right man who stear the helm of this crazy heritage who goes by the name of Mario Ferraro. After an initial period as director general, last May he was appointed chief administrator of the group.Ferraro is the new face of Sardinia, has extensive experience having held prestigious assignments from luxury hotel managers, including the revival of the Molino Stucky of Venice, and the reopening of the Hilton after a dramatic fire. However, where the real spotlight fell was in the Emirates, with the opening of a Conrad in Dubai. It was here that the sovereign family realized that he in the right man to give a new direction and a new face at that treasure called Smeralda Coast. Ferraro now recounts this amazing story Tendenze Nautiche, doing so in this interview by tracking budgets, but especially by offering a vision of what will be or should
be the future of Sardinia and the Smeralda Coast. Dr. Ferraro, to begin with, the summer season 2016 has just been sent to the archives, what can we trace from the books from your vantage point? “Surely an extraordinary season for a number of factors, in fact, ranging from geopolitics - which has seriously affected many countries in Europe, primarily France, and in the world - to glamor and lifestyle trends of the moment - which brought high spending guests to choose Italy for the holidays - in the summer months, the coastline and the town Belpaese have returned as destinations that host a large number of Italian and international tourists. Specifically, the Smeralda Coast has closed a very positive season, with a + 18% and + 12% expected for 2017, and Sardinia in general that - as stated by the Tourism Department of the region - has increased the inflows by about 20% in the last two years and this year has also increased the spending power per capita on the island”. Beginning with the Mayor of Arzachena, Ragnedda, followed by the Councillor for Tourism Region of Sardinia, Morandi and to end with what was said by the Minister Franceschini, the central theme of the debate on the island’s tourism seems to be to

figure out how to extend the tourist season. According to you, Sardinia has the potential because due it its tourism 365 days a year? And if so, what should be dono to make it attractive in the 12 months? “I believe that Sardinia, as well as the Smeralda Coast, have great potential to build, over time, an offer that points to involve tourists in the space of 12 months. As for stretching the season, I think it necessary to create a diversification to attract new sectors and customers in other seasons: I think of centres concerned with well-being or spas, to hotels suitable for conferences, golf and more, all elements that contribute to seasonally adjusting the flow of tourists. Closely related and equally important is the improvement of infrastructure and services: from the beaches, the roads and car parks. To expand the numbers you need to study new forms of accessibility, with the creation of new routes and an increase of the existing ones, national and European, not only in the high season, but most importantly mid-season: in that sense I think that the arrival of the new partner for the main carrier in Sardinia can bring new scenarios of network development, with Italian and European connections. Finally we have to think and create a full calendar of events, with different offers and aimed at multiple targets. But we cannot expect it to be a straightforward process, it is clearly to be implemented in stages and degrees, proceeding almost month after month. Several times she said that Sardinia Resorts and more generally Qatar Holding are ready to play their role because the Smeralda Coast and Porto Cervo can have a further opportunity for growth, what are the projects and initiatives included in your five-year plan? “Our business plan proceeds exactly in the direction of product diversification and innova-

Sardinia has a great potential that can allow tourists during all 12 months of the year. To extend the season the offer still needs to be diversified. A boating event in Porto Cervo? It would be desirable

tion: for the medium term and in the coming years we aim to enrich the offer of our four hotels, creating a spa, cooking school and other facilities, renewing the proposed food and beverage and enhancing the existing facilities; Also we aim to engage an audience and a younger market, through targeted partnerships, the creation and organization of far reaching multidisciplinary events (music, art, sports) in low season. Differentiation and innovation become key words also in the food & beverage industry, introducing in Smeralda Coast great brands of the international restaurant, such as the Novikov, which opened this year at the Cala Di Volpe. Among our projects there will be the improvement and diversification of the Cervo
Tennis Club facility, which as a simple tennis club will be proposed as a key component in its own right, in Smeralda Coast, as a center for sporting activities and events, in which you find spaces, innovative, dedicated to catering. Some of these strategic choices are obviously concerned with the challenge to lengthen our tourist season.” Crucially for Porto Cervo, in the last edition of Tendenze Nautiche, the president of Nautica Italiana, Lamberto Tacoli, said that the Smeralda Coast could be one of the possible locations to create a new major boating event. What do you think? “The Smeralda Coast is one of the most exclusive destinations in the world, which already hosts major sporting events related to the sea: I believe there is room to create and promote, at international level, an event as proposed by President Tacoli. In general, I believe that any initiative - shared with local authorities and administrations and institutions - a step in the direction of enhancing this wonderful area without
9
distorting it, will be welcome”. In terms of real estate investments you have always said to wait for the new planning law of the Sardinian Region. What do you expect and what aspects would be necessary within this law so as to paint the island's urban future? “We are not waiting for anything, in the sense that it only affects the certainty of the rules, in order to define – subsequently and accordingly - the shareholder interventions in our business plan. Our company is interested in investing in long-term plans for development and enhancement of the Costa Smeralda, on the basis of three fundamental principles: respect for the law, the environment and local identity. Investments in Smeralda Coast want - and will have to give - a contribution to local economic growth and create opportunities, business and professional, as a priority for the municipalities of the Smeralda Coast and the Sardinian territory in general”. Whilst waiting for the new law to become reality, what are the investments you have made in the field up until now? “We have focused heavily on hotels, representing the supporting structures of the Smeralda Coast: a revival of this destination should also come from the enhancement and expansion of the existing tourism on offer. Upgrading and modernization of real estate - in full harmony and with maximum respect for the land, the traditions and the Sardinian population, who with great care and attention always preserves the beauty and natural heritage of the Smeralda Coast - and in line with the highest standards of environmental sustainability, featuring worldwide investments of the sovereign fund of Qatar“. With the fusion of Starwood-Marriot will anything change in the management and strategy of the four hotels of Sardinia Resorts? If so, what? “We have the opportunity for the owner and for brand diversification. Property and management, as always, work synergistically to maximize potential of both the resort and destination, and together seek new growth opportunities for our business. The numbers in recent years - with revenues growing steadily - confirm that we are moving in the right direction”.

hareholders' meeting for Nautica Italiana. It will take place on December 2nd in La Spezia, in the Lotti port show. There will be 80 members from the different sectors of production ranging from large yacht construction, the construction of motor boats, through to the construction of sailing boats, refit & repair, accessories, services and ports. Bc-Marinasarda of Porto Cervo will also take part in the meeting, a new addition to Nautica Italiana. Meanwhile the peace signals continue between big Italian boating and the trade organization Confindustria, Ucina: they create "together", "or at least that's the intention," a common plan for boat shows. He said to the vice president of the Azimut-Benetti Group, Giovanna Vitelli, on the sidelines of an initiative in Artissima of Turin. realities, in Ogliastra there is huge potential but businesses must be empowered to be competitive. Today it is not so, because of chronic structural problems with which companies are forced to live with over a long time. And I think of the long-awaited infrastructure, the port of Arbatax, the situation of the industrial area of TortolÏ, and the serious logistical difficulties that penalize businesses. For some time our association has presented a package of specific proposals for the nautical sector where the revitalization project was even inserted for the Ogliastra of which expect the signature shortly. Interventions in infrastructure are a priority, from the port to traffic, to the industrial area. Above all the priority is to solve the problem of the crane and the travel lift, basic equipment for handling quay and whose absence undermines the prospects for development of the ogliastrina boating. On these issues, Mr Sabatini has made a commitment to organize a meeting soon in Cagliari with the president of the Pigliaru Region"."To the Honourable Ettore Rosato - explained Bornioli - we then represented the newly arisen problems for the naval base Navy Stars that performs storage of the hulls of Unicredit Leasing in Arbatax. For us it is crucial that the activities remain in Ogliastra, otherwise the consequences for the ogliastrina port would be very serious for the satellite companies connected to it and a chain effect for some of the network companies and other service companies, assistance, storage and maintenance. In recent years, it has developed an important cause that - direct and indirect - has over 160 workers and involves a number of local companies from different sectors.

by Tatiana Scarinci been viewed as an adventure of a lifetime. Taking us back to the corners of our imagination when we dreamed of being a pirate; or we had nightmares of the test of endurance of loneliness and fear of

with total security. Many are also the skipper and agencies that organize ad hoc trips, making it a real business to satisfy the curious and those eager to live the existence of a "scout" or "pirate". November is the month when the trade winds blow, the winds of the Northeast, which help sailors complete their journey across the Atlantic in less time. Despite the technological facilities, preparing for this journey is a serious matter. The classic route requires leaving the Strait of Gibraltar, at times in the Canary Islands or Cape Verde. From here, the journey continues in solitude for over 2700 miles with no sign of land. This state of loneliness lasts for about 2-3 weeks. Be prepared for the sea, consume a minimum of food supplies, water and electricity. There are times when the camaraderie and calm are essential in order to survive in harmony with fellow travelers. Internet and telephones do not exist. It seems trivial, but the feeling of being isolated from the world today brings real fear. An experience like this can give and take away so much. In the end, everyone draws their own conclusions, but perhaps it is one of the few moments where there is enough time to come to terms with ourselves. All in all, it could be an opportunity. Of adventure, but above all of life.

Beyond the sea there is a Sardinia to discover at the table

Journey in search of ancient flavors and recipes of traditional island life Fish, meat, cheese and Cannonau wine: the triumph of a unique land by Tatiana Scarinci
ovember. Now the sea and beautiful beaches are behind us, but Sardinia never ceases to amaze even out of season. And since this is the month of excellence when it comes to fairs and festivals, why not be enticed with the fabulous flavors, traditions, aromas and treats?Almost all the coastal cities of Sardinia have a rich traditional cuisine of the sea, with which you meet, often in imaginative unions, in the inland kitchens. Our journey starts from Gallura, where the kitchen serves traditional soups for the poor, such as the Gallura soup, a kind of "lasagna" made with layers of
carasau bread, broth, fresh cheese and seasoned breadcrumbs and passed through the oven, or "li ciusoni" , homemade pasta the size of a thumb, to be seasoned with tomato and meat sauce. Fish and shellfish are the trademark of many coastal cities. Olbia for example is famous for its mussels and clams, while Alghero excels at lobster, prepared with orange or the "Catalan", by virtue of its strong influence with the Hispanic culture. The fish is cooked mostly in the oven and sprinkled with a delicious Vermentino, a fresh and fruity taste. As we continue inland, near the lake Coghinas and Tempio, here we find the fantastic "panadas", pasta baskets filled with meat, and the unfailing tradition of pecorino cheese, which is trea-

A un-missable lunch with the shepherds, at which time you will have the pleasure of tasting culurgiones (pasta filled with cheese, potatoes and mint), and il porcetto (suckling pig), served on a bed of myrtle leaves. To conclude the feast, we suggest a selection of sweets, such as Aranzada and nougat from Tonara. Do not miss out, finally, the best macarrones de busa on the island, handmade pastry with the help of knitting needles, and the distinctive digestive-aid ‘filu e ferru’ (wires and iron), whose fascinating history tells of a time when this was hidden under the ground and found on the surface through metal detection.Coming down on the west side you get to Oristano. Here are must-visits to a traditional fish pond in the village of Cabras. The offer proposes a complete lunch of gray mullet and botargo, accompanied by excellent local Vernaccia and Malvasia. We continue south, crossing the mining area of Sulcis, home of the Carignano vine until arriving in San Gavino Monreale where an excellent quality saffron grows. This is the area of goat farms in all its forms, from cheeses, cold meats and the house specialty: grilled slices of goat, for true connoisseurs. The Cagliari deserves special mention, as the Arab influence has given an exquisite intertwining of tastes, such as cous cous carlofortino, which is called CascĂ , or "Fregula", wheat balls seasoned with dog or fish, accompanied by award-winning Turriga wine. For reasons of space we cannot mention other delicacies of the territory, but instead leave surprises to those who will decide, in part thanks to this our suggestion, to experience firsthand the myriad flavors of the Shardana land (ancient name of Sardinia).

St Vincent and the Grenadines The trip to the Caribbean is top
P
A little known destination to spend a few relaxing days at seaduring the holiday season: to visit and discover as many as 32 islands
lanning the Christmas holidays by the sea is a tall order. Leaving the Mediterranean, the world offers us so much as to feel lost. We propose a trip to the classic Caribbean, but in a place that is recognised very little as classical. We do not like very inflated places from mass tourism and we always know our passion: The sea and nature. And so what comes to mind is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. They are an ideal destination for those who love the Caribbean, and what is more they are considered a paradise for sailing. The archipelago consists of 32 small islands, atolls, coral reefs,
protected marine areas and of course a sea of dreams. Surfing the waves is a pleasure, driven by the sweet breath of the trade winds from a myriad of different all islands from one another, ranging from green and volcanic St Lucia and St Vincent, through to the unforgettable lagoon of Tobago Cays, to the postcard beaches of the southern islands of the archipelago (Pam Island, Petit St. Vincent). Mustique, however, deserves a special mention, because of the similarity with the history of Porto Cervo. The island came to life in the sixties thanks to the long term renting situation created by the Mustique company, a company created by the British lord Colin Tennant, who
fell in love with the small island, and built more than 90 luxurious villas in an area of 6 square kilometers. The luxury and isolation has made the winter destination a place for jet setters, a great place to accommodate winter friends. The archipelago, on the other hand, is suitable for audiences of all types and budgets, and offers a combination of ecological adventures in the rainforest, scuba diving, classic Caribbean white sand beaches, luxurious accommodations and adventures in yacht or sailboat. You get to Saint Vincent flying from Paris, and from there, you find the most beautiful sea in the world to sail. T. S.

Canada, a mysterious sound from the depths In Canada a mysterious sound from the depths of the sea makes the animals flee. The sound is recorded in the Strait of Fury and Hecla, in the northeast of the state, where the population has asked the army to discover its origin. To date, three assumptions have been made: the sound is originated from surveys carried out by mining companies with sonar; that the instrument has been installed by Greenpeace to remove marine mammals (thus saving them from hunters); this secret installation was created for espionage. All curious explanations. Still no definite answer.
ECOALF: WASTE FROM THE SEA ON THE CATWALK
W
“The water will rise: Mose barrier is useless” If the current trend of rising seawaters will continue to be confirmed in the coming years, the Mose barrier will be totally useless to Venice and the lagoon. The warning was launched by the engineer Jorg Imberger, the marine environment expert, at a conference at the Telecom Future Centre. The great work, still in progress, returns to the forefront of conversation. The same position was supported a year ago by the environmentalist association Ambiente Venice, who in October 2015 stated: “In the event of rising sea levels, the Mose will not be able to defend Venice and the lagoon”.
aste that become fashionable. This is the case of Ecoalf: the Spanish company, in fact, brings the plastic collection from the sea onto the catwalk. The project, called Upcycling the Oceans, transforms the plastic recovered from the sea into suits, jackets and top quality bags. Today Ecoalf collaborates with two hundred vessels, eleven ports and includes about one ton of waste per day from the Mediterranean Sea. The company, founded by Javier Goyeneche, is based in Madrid, but it is present in about 430 multi-brand stores in the world, 310 of which reside in Europe. The process begins in the sea with the recovery of waste, which are then transferred in some centers where they are reduced into pellets and micro granules which, after certain weaving operations, are transformed into the yarns used for the realization of the garments. Among the materials recovered from Ecoalf we mainly find plastic, but also old tires, cotton and coffee. Since September 2015 about 65 tons of garbage has already been removed from the Mediterranean.

The extraordinary properties of seaweed
Seaweed, perhaps unknown to many, has extraordinary properties. First and foremost it provides us with some of the important nutrients for health: it is used in particular in Asia, and is particularly known due to its use in the preparation of sushi. But seaweed can also be used for aesthetic treatments or for cellulite treatment, osteoarthritis, bronchitis, osteoporosis, ulcers, joint pain, constipation, gastritis and to combat cholesterol ("Seaweed therapy"). Not to forget the use create "energy": in fact, it is capable of producing energy by using the polluting substances present in the atmosphere; hence the use of this "sea vegetable" in numerous lights.
Studying for the high school graduation exam in the sea, crossing the Atlantic Ocean aboard an ancient ship: we are preparing well with ‘Class Afloat West Island College International’. The teens spend a full year (September to May) in the sea, including lessons with course books, sailing courses, shifts for cleaning the ship and work in the kitchen. Applications for the school year 2016-17 are still open, as well as those for the 2017-2018 school year. To learn more about the particular Canadian college take a look at the website www.classafloat.com.
