Recovering the right path

T

he definitive split (?) between Nautica Italiana and UCINA Confindustria nautical is not the best way to move towards the summer and the distinguishing events to come. Beginning with the Ucina branded Genoa Boat Show or that of Versilia (the debut) desired by the neo association President Lamberto Tacoli. The first two groupings in months, however, were seeking an agreement with the Gentiloni Governmenta to offer a split, through the Secretary Ivan Scalfarotto. Currently, it is irreconcilable. The last act was the double letter of the President of Nautica Italiana sent to the exponent of the Government and the President of UCINA, Carla Demaria. Letters where Tacoli says to surrender, and thus go to the two nautical events without being able to make use of state funds, which would only come when an agreement between the two associations. A lecture not shared by the same Demaria, claiming the funds. To underline which of the two is right or not would be a futile exercise, and difficult to do well. We limit ourselves instead in saying that this is not the right path to recovery and the repositioning of Italian boating.

Interview with BARBARA ARGIOLAS

“The revival of tourism comes through planning” The new regional councilor wants a new governance that is able to offer alternatives to the sea: “Sardinia has to accommodate visitors from March to November ... And I agree with Vissani” by Gianluigi Basilietti

B

arbara Argiolas is the new lady of tourism for the region of Sardinia. Where, by region, it means not only geographically speaking, but also the island's highest government institution. The president Francesco Pigliaru wanted her by his side by inserting her in the big reshuffle, taking the post that had been of Francesco Morandi, to guide the Coun-

cilor of tourism. Argiolas also has powers within the realms of trade and craft. For those in tourism it is not a lot that is expected, but almost everything, especially if you get to play the role in a land like this. In short, a challenge to be faced head on and race, making 48 hours of the days ,as they say, for which finding half an hour for an interview was quite a feat. So in the end you did it Councilor Argiolas. It has been only a few weeks since you became part of the county council, what are the guidelines it has set to follow in these two and a half years of work ahead? “Being in a framework of regional strategies, there will be a continuity with the past, but the policies that are particularly at the heart are those relating to the governance model that is to be adopted, focus to structural policies for change and the vertical integration and infrastructure of some segments of tourism that go beyond what is pure seaside activities, involving our island 50 days per year, but that is not enough as it has now been established. In this sense, the key for tourism in Sardinia for me is related to the environment, the landscape and the world of sport, whether at sea or not; then comes sailing, or any other inherent activity of each geographical area, always respecting the environment. This is the central theme to the entire design, which must have longevity and quality of life as a beacon, because as the goal is rea-

ched we will need a more structured plan that goes through what I call community projects, involving citizens, businesses and government entities”. It seems to me that your intention is clear; if not a real cultural revolution, at least a willingness to move towards a profoundly different approach to the interpretation of the role. “Regional tourism cannot still be perceived only as a delegate to the promotion, but to become a driving force of integrated policies and give an example: in many, almost all, they speak of food and wine tourism, as in my department which has the task of structuring this branch as well as a sailing event. That is the work of the sports councilor, but the value of the event is up to tourism. But to return to your original question, I tell you that I'd like to leave a trace of my work by creating a new governance model that brings together the Region, municipalities and companies, and resulting in the interest of citizens”. Extending the tourist season is one of the issues at the heart of the debate. What is the minimum target to be achieved in terms of months and what is there to do to attract tourists and visitors on the island at times outside of the sea “zone”? “Thanks to our climate and the geopolitical conditions enjoyed by Sardinia, along with the security that our region offers, I have no doubt that we can work without problems from March until at least mid-November, already nine months out of twelve. To do this we need to give a motive to a conventional structure organized for beach tourism, to remain open until the autumn, and thus to assure coverage through other kind of tourist offers that may be complementary or alternative to bathing. So it is clear that the definition of a calendar of activities becomes an important attractor and all this must be accompanied by a targeted communication campaign. That must always be less general and more vertically integrated through targets, desires, needs and typology. On this aspect we have to work fast, compelling the situation we are living in, just think, we are at Easter (the interview was conducted on April 12, editor's note) and 50% of hotels on the coast are not yet open, which means that we certainly have some difficulty”. In a calendar of events would there be room for a great nautical event, at an international level, that becomes a regular event? “It would be desirable, hopefully relevant to the world of sailing as that is definitely in line with our vision of sustainable development of the island. And then bring in Sardinia, also a high spending target”. That never hurts, even the commissioner does not say so, but su-

A nautical event of International breadth is desirable, it would be in line with our idea of sustainable development of the island. Structuring the offer of tourism must be integrated with policies regarding ports and airports

rely must have thought it. The Master of the Italian kitchen, Gianfranco Vissani, in an interview with Tendenze Nautiche said: “Sardinia can no longer live with only vips”. Do you think so, too? “I do not like the expression vips, but as I said, tourism is a community project, and so I very much agree with the Master Vissani. We

have a real capacity of welcoming and really show our identity which is unique and this is not part of an exclusive area, but part of a way of life and perception of the nature on offer. The issue is not to work on a more or less exclusive tourism, but work on a diversity and capacity the we must develop, with offers of different holidays, perhaps alternatives or even competitors. We must find the right mix, but starting from the preservation of our environment and of our landscape. To this we must add our know-how, such as in agriculture, food and wine, crafts and not only in the artistic sense, but I also think of this in the artisan workmanship that knows how to be innovative in design”. Another problem to solve is the one that refers to air and sea connections that have always threatened to penalize the island in terms of visitors. “There is no doubt that the structure of tourist offers and seasonal adjustment policies must be integrated

with the airport and port policies, which in turn must be aimed at improving connections to and from Sardinia”. For years we feel the sensation that Sardinia is there, one step away from becoming one of the world's leading tourist destinations. But then there is always something blocking takeoff. Is this just a misperception, or is there some truth in this? “This type of analysis is never simple. I should mention that Sardinia excels in some areas such as technology, research and innovation, while it is known that in other fields, such as tourism, we pioneered in a new way of considering the sea, I think of Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo. For the rest I think right now we have a great awareness, that of an increasingly globalized market that requires us to accept challenges and requires the need to work together, and if we are good at it, this could most certainly bring about that competitive jump that is asked of us”.

special issue of Tendenze Nautiche this April. The reason is simple: we are pleased to introduce two new web platforms that project the future of the magazine and the editors at Bc-Marinasarda. Two modern and functional websites that mark, in some way, a new beginning; showing growth in the desire to expand together. On www.marinasarda.it find all the boats available for dream trips and

itineraries to spend days of total relaxation at sea. And be sure to follow the Facebook profile of Marinasarda. On www.tendenzenautiche.net you will find, however, daily boating news, sea and coastal tourism. In addition to all issues of the magazine, many topics of curiosity, such as recipes, water sports and the marine environment. Moreover, our social profiles: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Tendenze Nautiche will still be available on www.issuu.com.

Genoa Boat Show still here after 57 Meanwhile it is still stormy between Nautica Italiana and Ucina Tacoli writes to the Government: “Nothing agreed, we give up on public funds”, Demaria replied: “Agreement still possible, the money awaits”

“A

fter two years of recovery in the sector, a third positive year is confirmed, which means a great show but also a great future for the Italian shipbuilding industry, as we are one of the regions that are home to the largest number of excellence in this sector”, was the comment of the President of Regione Liguria, Giovanni Toti, during the presentation of the 57th Genoa international boat show, scheduled on the 21st to 26th of the coming September: “looking at the numbers it should be an edition that will bring great satisfaction”. added the governor. And the numbers are those of a show that is confirmed as the main event within the industry: 4000 square meters more than in 2016, 50% more berths in the dock for boats over 15 meters, with 82% of 2016 exhibitors who have already joined the event, half of them increasing spaces and boats on display. “I think it is the responsibility of our institutions to provide continuity

and certainty to this show, integrating more and more of the fair activities with the production of the region and also with those to promote the area. To fulfil this we are working profitably, with Ucina, all the subjects, and the Port Authority, and this will continue to work”, continued Toti. “The road taken and the numbers taken from the edition in 2016 show us once again the positive confirmation of our way: focus on quality production, tourism, integration of all the worlds linked to the boat show; this is the road to the development and success of this Regio”, said the president, dismissing the issue of a show away from Genoa: “Let’s stop with the chatter of where the Nautico will be, from 57 years ago in Genoa, it is reasonable to think that this show will go on in Genoa for another 57 years”. Meanwhile, a few kilometers from the Ligurian capital there will be another industry event. This will be that organized by Nautica Italiana in Versilia. And the war between the neo Association President Tacoli and Ucina becomes increasingly fierce. The last act

arewell Engineer, and good sea in your last trip to the horizon”. With this the Cantieri Riva and Ferretti Group have announced the death of the engineer Carlo Riva, who died in his Sarnico at the age of 95. “In four letters are condensed the story, the myth, the technique and the charm of the yachts made in Italy. The story of a family and an extraordinary man, the myth of an entire era that launched the Italian design to the world, since the “Dolce Vita” to this day”. “He left us the greatest of all. The world lost a brilliant creator of boats, a master of style, a giant of industrial and entrepreneurial history of our Italy. I, personally, lose a teacher, an example of ingenuity, commitment and love for the job”, said the lawyer Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group.

Giovanni Toti The President of the Liguria Region unveiled the next Genoa Boat Show

of the clash between the two groups came about on the eve of the presentation of the Genoa Boat Show. The president of Nautica Italiana, Lamberto Tacoli, as reported by the website “The Meditelegraph” (and taken up by Ansa Mare), wrote to the Secretary Ivan Scalfarotto to inform him that “an agreement between the Ministry of Economy, Ucina and Nautica Italiana, to act to support the two events of Viareggio and Genoa in 2017, is no longer possible because of repeated delays in replies by

Ucina to our proposals advanced from time to time”. A second letter was addressed to Ucina president Carla Demaria, to inform her of the first and to point out that: “We must free up public resources in a civil and responsible manner, at least for the current year, in favor of other priorities for the country”. But Demaria does not think it is so; on one hand she says she is still convinced that she can reach an agreement with the government, “because for me the dialogue continues, and I do not lose hope”, on the other, she highlights that the Genoa Motor Show, according to her, has the right to obtain state funds: “the Stability Pact of 2015 had targeted them in providing an show of national and international importance that represent the industry, there is no reason not to have them today”. Remember that the funds for the two sailing events had been promised by the Government on the condition that one of the associations had found an agreement. An agreement has not been made, but the feeling is that it does not end here.

And so the important maneuvers have begun.”The outer islands have objective structural disadvantages, immediately evaluable. To mitigate them we need targeted policies, starting with recognition itself, from Europe, of the specific character of remoteness associated with insularity. It is a matter of equal opportunities, a right of citizenship for our peoples, to guarantee us a better

perspective of wellbeing and strengthen ourselves in the international dialogue”, said the Head of General Affairs, Filippo Spanu, who spoke at the Palace of Congresses, in Ajaccio, at the seminar organized by the Committee of the Regions of the European Union. The meeting, led by Stanisław Szwabski, member of the CoR and President of the European Alliance Group, opened with the intervention of the President of the Executive Council of Corsica Gilles Simeoni who stressed the strategic value of the alliance between his island, Sardinia and the Balearics. “With one voice

we bring more strength to our concerns, bringing them to the attention of national governments and European institutions. The prospect is that of a unified and coordinated vision of the major problems that affect our development in the framework of the Mediterranean”, said Simeoni. Spanu focused on concepts that are part of the executive policy agenda led by Pigliaru and which are the subject of ongoing dialogue at European level in the Committee of Regions. explained that “you need a team effort to find trends in the postponed need for targeted interventions and lasting benefits of permanently disadvantaged regions, in order to bring them closer to the more developed areas of the European Union. he fun in Sardinia does not come only from the sea. An example is the ‘Kartodromo Is Arenadas’ which you find in Birdesi-Girasole, on the side of Tortolì, a real alternative to all engines and speed to the relaxation that a day at the beach has to offer. “Since 2005 we have been entertaining adults and children, thanks to our karts and our fantastic track that stretches for more than 1,200 meters”, says the owner, Jhonny Meloni. The kart track is open all year, but the busiest months are during the summer and in any case related to the beautiful seasons, when the circuit remains open until late evening, even after midnight. "Whoever engages in the track - says Meloni - gets a print of their times." For those who want to try and take a ride with the kart can contact the hotel directly through their website www.kartodromoisarenadas.it or visit the Facebook profile Kartodromo Isarenadas.

This fiftieth year of activity will be marked by various initiatives. The first was there in March with a cruise, for members only, in the British Virgin Islands, aboard the historic ship Sea Cloud. Subsequently, on May 12th, exactly 50 years after the date on which the current President, His Highness the Aga Khan, along with the three founders AndrÊ Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti, gave life to the YCCS, a photo exhibition will be inaugurated in Piazza Azzurra Porto Cervo. The exhibition will display the images of the boats that have shaped the history of the Club, reported in the book of fifty years, presented by Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo. The culmination of the social celebrations will take place on August 5th, with a great show to be held in Porto Cervo.

he official summer holidays are still far from arriving, it's time to get in line, plan, organize, manage, work, but also dream a little. Dreaming up a romantic getaway far from everyone and everything, in the middle of nowhere, in those paradisiacal islands where you are completely alone, kissed by the sun and sea salt. Continuing on this path, the dream brings us to 115 fantastic islands of the Seychelles, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. A few inhabited islands, and many more to be discovered only by private plane or with our preferred medium. The boat. Upon landing in Victoria, the capital, you breathe in the humid air, windy and fragrant. This first breath, reminds us that we are finally on vacation. The island of MahĂŠ is fascinating as ever, with its smells, its multiethnic and joyful people. The Seychelles are also producers of the famous or infamous black pearl farming, a fine jewel, but also, according to some, a troublesome jewel that does not always open the way for good fortune. From the very first moment you notice the variety of beaches, granite rocks and vegetation without limits. And although this bodes very well, the real paradise is yet to come.It starts with the catamaran from Victoria Harbor to discover the famous Inner Islands of granite formation.

Giant tortoises and colorful fish, the Seychelles are also this. Here nature finds its highest glories

Navigating onwards leads us to admire Praslin, also known as the Island of Seduction due to a unique type of coconut: the Coco de Mer. One of a kind, this coconut has the shape of the female pelvis and only grows in the Vallee de Mai, the Unesco World heritage site. It is a dense jungle where unique trees grow in the world up to heights of 40 meters. It is perhaps most popular island, chosen for its postcard scenery, with enchanting beaches, where you can get lost in the blue sky and sea. The great thing about traveling by boat comes from from organizing your day according to the natural rhythms of nature: Waking up early, landing on the islands, sea-watching adventures with masks and fins, in the company of giant turtles and colorful fish, bathing in the sun and the sea. It is the captain to decide for us and they do so depending on how the

wind turns. There are also many opportunities to explore the unspoilt nature within the islands. On the island of Curieuse you can visit the conservation center for tortoises, where the now famous George and Georgina, 2 giant and very old (about 150 years) tortoises, chase after people at their own pace to be caressed. La Digue is located in front of one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world. We are in Anse Sourse d'Argent beach and it is so beautiful that it doesn’t seem real. It is not hard to see why many advertisements and films have been shot here. It is a delight to the eyes, the harmony that exists between the granite eroded by the wind, the palm trees and the crystal clear waters. Simply perfect. Intoxicated by such beauty, we turn our dream to the return journey and the awakening can only do one thing: set off seriously this time.

The Faraglione ship passing in front of the mythical Faraglioni

I

n the Gulf of Naples, there is an almost century-old ship that plows the sea. This is the Faraglione ship, a stunning 54-meter Lindenau, launched in 1928 in Germany, reported today at its highest luster as both ancient and regal. The story that it brings is important as it sailed the Baltic Sea as a restaurant ship hosting key personalities from politics, and seeing in major border treaties between emperors and chancellors. After the war, the Faraglione was instead employed as the transport of thou-

sands of Prussian refugees towards the Adriatic. Today, due to advances in technology, ships like these are having a short life. Their uneconomic function, is leading to their progressive demolition. The Faraglione ship appears to be one of the few still left in the world to witness a past full of sequins, pain, destruction, hope and the good life. But the project goes ahead. In 2016, the ship was acquired by Neapolitan ship owners, who have undergone a major restyling, respecting its beautiful plu-

mage, bringing to light the ancient brass, the prized mahogany doors and dedicating it to a new service for day boat restaurant cruises, exclusive hire, events and meetings. One cannot fail to notice this "Old Madam" passing through the shadows of Vesuvius, or before the mythical Faraglioni rocks of Capri, remembering moments of the Dolce Vita, where icons graced their presence, like Brigitte Bardot, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren and many others. eing near water is good for the brain. So says the writer Wallace J. Nichols in his book "Blue Mind: The surprising science that shows how being near, in, on, or under water can make you happier, healthier, more connected and better at what you do”. The book deals with a theory based on neuroscientific evidence, a passage through medical research and brain processes that are triggered when you come into connection with sea water, oceans, rivers and lakes. Drawing on neuroscience, Wallace J. Nichols shows that the proximity to water is critical in improving performance in many areas, increasing tranquility and decreasing anxiety, expanding creativity, increasing personal success, improving health and enhancing connections with the natural world.

The new journey of the Amerigo Vespucci: after 16 years it returns to America

T

he Amerigo Vespucci, a symbolic ship of the Navy, will sail on April 19th from La Spezia in order to return to the US after 16 years. A multimedia diary on board the ship is to recount its journey in the ocean. The Amerigo Vespucci is a ship that counts many years of service in the Navy. Built in the shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia and laun-

ched February 22nd 1931, the hull has three main bridges, continued from bow to stern (cover, battery and corridor) and two main superstructures, the forecastle and quarterdeck, which rise up to the upper deck. The vessel will return to La Spezia on 23rd September, after having moored in Portugal, Bermuda, Canada, the United States and Spain.

he Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Norway and Belgium are developing a project that involves the construction of one or more artificial islands in the middle of the North Sea that will be a hub in which to connect ten thousand wind turbines, thus providing large-scale renewable energy. The wind farms of the so-called Power Link Islands will be able to produce from 70 thousand to 100 thousand mw. On the islands there will be staff and members of the laboratories to optimize and simplify complex offshore logistics. The project was brought about through international cooperation between TenneT TSO BV (Netherlands), Energinet.dk (Denmark) and TenneT TSO GmbH (Germany).

Costa Concordia, after three years concludes the demolition work

O

n January 13th, 2012, the Costa Concordia was wrecked on the island of Giglio. The tragedy claimed the lives of 32 people and injured 110, and the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, was sentenced on appeal to 16 years; the hearing of which is set on April 20th in the Supreme Court. The ship arrived in Genoa in July 2014 to be demolished, and the completion of the demolition took place a few days ago. This work of dismantling was divided into four phases and lasted almost three years, it is the largest and most complex project of shipbreaking ever carried out in Italy.
