Meet Tricia Grame

Curating a Beautiful and Creative Life

the advisory committee for the Village Theater Gallery, and has curated several exhibitions, “Open Studio” events as well as her favorite, student educational shows.

Tricia also has been teaching in the SRVUSD for many years beginning with San Ramon Valley High School, Monte Vista High School, and presently Pine Valley Middle School. She works for two exceptional administrators, Principal, Sandy Kontilis and Vice Principal, Steven Anderson, an “exceptional” experience. Tricia explains, “They both support and encourage my curriculum and understand how essential art and creativity is for self development. It is the classroom where students share ideas, sing, explore and experiment.” Her students paint the classroom doors, walls, garbage pails, chairs, tables, even projector screens (that don’t roll up anymore}... “their creativity is limitless.” Including art history and providing historical context of art in the world today is also an important part of Tricia’s teaching methodology. Her “desire is for each student to be able to have a conversation about art, history, release their own creativity and make personal decisions. Some students need a different approach to learning and this is where artistic experience works. The energy, production and diversity of art in my classroom is beyond exciting.” Having the experience of teaching in both public, private, youth and adult arenas, Tricia has a vast and unique ability to enlighten the lives of all ages.

Originally from New York City, Tricia and her husband, Richard, moved across the country to Palo Alto, CA. Eventually they ended up settling across the bay in Danville. Tricia exclaims “How could we resist? A beautiful, intimate town…a view of Mt. Diablo, having land, a space for an art studio, a wonderful community, and a perfect place to raise our son.” Even today, their son and his wife (Michael and Ritu) along with their grandchildren, Serena and Sean, live only “two stoplights away.” What a blessing! Although her family plays the central role in her life, Tricia is also a well renowned artist, writer, and educator that has enriched our Danville community with her expertise, talents and gifts for many years. Over the course of her career, she studied at a variety of institutions, including California College of the Arts, UC Berkeley, CSU East Bay and Dominquez. Tricia is currently an adjunct professor for the California Institute of Integral Studies, Ph.D., Women’s Program and MFA in Writing, Consciousness and Creative Inquiry Department. She has also taught for New College in San Francisco. When teaching adults, Tricia’s approach is quite unique. “My focus is about self discovery, traveling back in one’s life with dreams and memories. My student’s write as much as they make art. We explore the meaning of symbols and images as a means of creating individual and collective artwork.” Having curated many exhibitions for the Women’s Spirituality Program at California Institute of Integral Studies and Stanford University, Tricia also had the opportunity to curate dozens of exhibitions and lectures globally…from NYC, to Malta, Italy and California, to name a few. Locally, Tricia has been an art commissioner and on

Combining her love for travel, art and teaching, has given Tricia the opportunity to lead education tours to Europe with Jet Vacations. For the past 8 years, Tricia has led art tours in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy. This June, Tricia is thrilled to be leading a trip to Greece where Cycladic ancient female symbols were discovered in 2500 BC. If you are looking to travel this November, Tricia will be leading a tour to Italy with a reception for her very own exhibition at the Nous Gallery in Tuscany. One of her more memorable endeavors was when she did her doctorate research and organized group exhibitions in Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean between Africa and Sicily. Tricia noted that “Malta consists of hundreds of female sculptures and megalithic limestone temples, etched by the sun for thousands of years.” The US Ambassador, Kathryn Profitt, the Parliamentary Secretary for Women’s Rights, Helen Dalli, and the Minister of Education, Louis Gali, attended the reception at the Westin Dragonara Resort. She was included in both a live TV and radio show in Malta, “What a Eureka moment!”

More recently Tricia has been delivering lectures on the “Evolving Image of the Female in Art History, Self-Identity and Culture.” Her favorite organization, American Association of University Women invited her to speak on this subject. She explains, “today I am most concerned about advertising, social media and the negative effects it has on young girls, in particular”. “How they define beauty, how they are supposed to look and who they are supposed to look like. The female face and body have become an instrument that has turned her into an artificial, living art object that is voice-less, which can diminish one’s self esteem. There is always a correlation between society’s values, directions, motives and the art it produces.” Tricia’s teaching mission is focused on “nurturing the creative process and that every human is born with a creative gene.” Her intent is to provide students with a voice, self confidence and passion through creating and discussing art, history and human connection.

The splendor of Tricia’s artistic curiosity and brilliance is not all that she brings to enrich our little town of Danville. Tricia and her husband have cultivated a vineyard with 300 cabernet plants on their property in the west side hills. Richard, a pharmacist, took a different direction in the flavor and fragrance industry. This explains his unique sense of smell and taste and is enjoying learning about the art of wine making. Monty Paulson, of the Paulson Winery in Livermore is currently making and bottling the Grame’s wine, Gramegna. As someone who also has an interest in the arts, he was thrilled to suggest to Tricia to design the wine label herself…featuring a variety of ancient female sculptures true to Tricia’s artistic signature style. What is even more thrilling for our community is that Filipo Silvestri, owner of Locanda Ravello, and a wine expert, has decided to showcase the wine at the iconic Danville Italian restaurant…be sure to ask for a bottle the next time you visit! Tricia has one final thought to share with her Danville Living neighbors “I am so fortunate to live in Danville with my family, in a town that has inspired my creative process and gives me the opportunity to share my passion and the arts with others.”

Bound for Books

The Town of Danville is pleased to present Bound for Books, an artful book bench project for the 2023 summertime public art project. Ten talented artists will be transforming benches in the shape of books into unique and artistic seating for residents and visitors to downtown Danville. The artists drew their inspiration from a variety of books ranging from classics to children’s stories and even a cookbook!

This project intends to encourage reading, provide a place for people to rest, and to instill in the community an understanding and appreciation for public art.

The ten Book Benches will be on display at various downtown Danville locations, including the Town Green by the Library and Community Center and at the Village Theatre Art Gallery to name just a couple, for the duration of the summer of 2023.

Bound for Books will be on view beginning June 9 through the first week in October. There will be an Opening Reception at the Village Theatre Art Gallery on Friday, June 9 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. where five of the Book Benches will be on display on the patio before they are distributed and installed at their summer locations in downtown Danville. There will be family friendly activities scheduled earlier on the same day from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Town Green by the Library, where the other five Book Benches will be on display. At the end

of the exhibition period, all Book Benches will be moved back to the patio of the Village Theatre & Art Gallery for a closing reception on September 28 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and the Book Benches will remain there for viewing until they are sold at an online auction which will open on September 29 and close on October 2. The funds will go toward future public art projects in the Town of Danville.

Cosmetic Procedures for Men

Overthe last decade, it has become common for men to seek assistance in the quest to look and feel younger. In my private practice as a dermatologist for over twenty-five years, I have seen this trend increase among men of various groups. Some men are just committed to slowing the aging process in all aspects of their lives — they are physically fit, eat healthfully, and generally take good care of their bodies. Keeping themselves looking young is part of an ongoing way of life. Another group are those aged 50 and above who are still actively employed who wish to look younger as a way of staying competitive in fields dominated by a younger generation. Divorced men actively dating want to make themselves feel and look more desirable. The list goes on, but what we know is that men are engaging more and more in endeavors to create a more youthful version of themselves.

From the physician’s perspective, the critical aspect of treating men is keeping the results of any of these undertakings as natural looking as possible. Men have the distinct disadvantage of having no easy way to conceal — as women do with make-up — any procedural work. Although this may be a double standard, there is cultural acceptance of women engaging in cosmetic or invasive work that

makes them look younger and more beautiful. There can be a stigma for those men who have cosmetically altered their appearance — consider your reaction to male celebrities who’ve had too extreme a facelift.

Fortunately for men, many small procedures can be rejuvenating without being obvious. Find yourself a doctor who understands the differences of the male esthetic and embraces the approach of restoring the appearance rather than altering it. You will be duly impressed as will those around you who will only think you’ve slept well or are just taking great care of yourself. When you see a less aged and more vibrant version of yourself, it goes a long way towards empowering you both at work and in your personal life.

Patients should seek out reputable, board-certified plastic surgeons who prioritize patient safety and adhere to the highest standards of care. Often, those offering cheaper procedures are not board-certified plastic surgeons, and may not have the necessary training and expertise to perform complex surgeries safely. Additionally, cheap plastic surgery often involves the use of subpar materials and equipment. For example, some clinics may use cheaper, counterfeit versions of well-known brands of implants, pain medications, healing agents, and dermal fillers. Itis June! Congratulations on another school year completed. If you are like most parents, you are working on navigating your child’s future. Summertime is a fabulous time of year to take the opportunity to build your child’s portfolio with extracurricular activities that are meaningful and fully develop your child’s passions.

Being in California, if your child wishes to take advantage of the competitive public school institutions that your taxes have been paying for, the University of California system and the California State University system, you are more than likely aware that testing is no longer part of the application process. What this means is that your child’s grade point average, their choice of rigor in classes, and their extracurriculars become very important aspects of the application process. The extracurricular activities not only build your child’s portfolio to demonstrate the commitment to a well rounded résumé, but also the depth they want to experience and achieve in what they are interested in doing.

Sure, I can sit; sometimes I’ll lay down BUT ASK ME TO SPIN – (sometimes you don’t even have to ask) – and SPIN I WILL. Sometimes I’ll add a quick little howl when I spin because I know it cracks up my human friends. They say I’m 10 years old – but I sure don’t feel it one bit. And my friends keep saying that I’m such a spry boy. I even like doing agility in the Shelter Yard. I love going on walks and I am quite well behaved when I take my friends for a walk. I don’t pull them at all. I am a husky mix with very soft fur, already neutered - and I know if you meet me, you’ll fall in love. Do You Want to be a Landlord?

Mostof us grew up playing Monopoly and learned at an early age that the way to win the game was to own the most and/or the best properties. Those who didn’t and had to pay rent, lost. It’s a simple concept that easily translates into real life. That said, real life is a bit more complicated.

If you’re considering purchasing rental/income property, it’s best to know what your priorities are and to make a plan. Do you plan to “manage” your rental yourself (collect rents, take care of maintenance, communicate directly with your tenant, etc.)? If so, you will probably want to find a property that is fairly close to home and you should make sure that you are familiar with the rental laws in your area, along with federal Fair Housing Laws. If this sounds overwhelming, you may want to consider hiring a property manager to handle your rental property and allow a budget for this expense. You’ll also want to know your “numbers.” You will need to compare your projected income to both your fixed and unexpected expenses, and make sure that you have the financial strength to cover expenses should you end up with an extended vacancy or a tenant who stops paying rent.

If that last part has you thinking twice, remember the goal. Historically, real estate has been a phenomenal investment. If you are purchasing a property and expect to hold it for a long time, odds are excellent that the value of the property and the rents, will go up over time - ideally while someone else is paying rent that covers the majority of your holding expense. It’s a great way to use leverage and time, to your advantage.

Are you already a landlord, and wishing that you were not? Sometimes, as years and decades go by, a property owner finds themselves wishing that they did not have to deal with their rental property any longer. Having made a great investment long ago, the fear of capital gains taxes prevents them from making a change. If

you find yourself in this category, I highly recommend consulting with an excellent 1031 Exchange accommodator. These professionals can guide you through your legal options to sell your rental and transfer into different real estate investment options where you can transfer your equity and defer the payment of capital gains taxes. You may be surprised by the many options available. The timing is especially good right now, given the extension on tax deadlines this year in many California counties, which is providing additional time for identifying and closing on your replacement property. Please consult with your CPA and/or 1031 Exchange specialist to confirm that you qualify for this extension.

Chicken Curry in a Hurry

It’ssummertime! That means everyone is moving towards cold salads for dinner and staying away from the heat of the oven. This is a great recipe for anyone that has leftover chicken sitting in the refrigerator and you’re just asking yourself, ‘What am I going to do with this?’ This chicken curry salad is also great for a weeknight meal when you don’t have a lot of time on your hands. It’s creamy, but not heavy and has a sweet heat kick. This can be served over a bed of lettuce or wrapped in a tortilla (my personal favorite). It’s fancy enough to serve at a party and casual enough to take on a camping trip. I personally have done both. Stay cool out there this summer, my friends.

Quick Chicken Curry Salad

Serves 4-6

Time- 15-20 min

You will need:

• 2 large fully cooked skinless chicken breast,

• Or 4 cups of cooked diced chicken breast

• 2 TBS of mild curry powder (I use Japanese curry powder)

• 1/2 C. Mayonnaise

• 1 C. Plain whole milk Greek yogurt

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1/2 teaspoon of jalapeño, finally, minced (optional)

• Juice from half of a large juice

• 2 TBS Honey

• 3/4 C. Red cabbage, shredded

• 1/2 C. Craisins, chopped

• 3 Green onion, sliced

• Salt and pepper to taste

• Garnish with Almonds, cashews or pistachios, finally chopped

Putting it together:

In a medium size bowl, combine all your ingredients, except the chicken, and whisk together until thoroughly blended. Continuously taste and adjust your dressing until it is to your liking. If you’d like a stronger curry taste, add more curry powder. If you’d like it sweeter, add more honey. Dice the chicken into small cubes and add it to the dressing. Mix thoroughly. Cover and chill for at least one hour. Top with chopped nuts before serving.

Empowering Girls Through Rugby: A Season of Triumph, Growth, and Friendship

In the heart of our community, a group of young girls has been making their mark on the rugby pitch. The recently concluded season for the Danville Oaks Middle School Girls Rugby team has been nothing short of extraordinary. These talented athletes, aged between 11 and 14, have left an indelible mark, demonstrating incredible skill, resilience, and camaraderie. Most of the girls this season have never played rugby before. The perceived physicality of the sport can cause hesitation in most athletes (parents). With the support of the Danville Oaks, the girls created an environment of support, encouragement, and empowerment, enabling each player to thrive and reach new heights.

Through adversity and challenges that most “first seasons” bring, the girls ended their season strong. They won their last two matches with brilliant teamwork. Including a match against Motherlode Rugby from Shingle Springs, CA. Motherlode was the victor in the last three contests earlier in the season. The Danville Oaks girls really showcased how much they have grown throughout this season by securing the last win.

Beyond the scoreboard, this season has been transformative for each player involved. Rugby has served as a catalyst for personal growth, pushing these girls beyond their perceived limits and teaching them valuable life lessons. The sport has instilled in them a sense of resilience, self-confidence, and mental toughness that will undoubtedly benefit them both on and off the field. Through rugby, they have learned to face adversity head-on, embrace challenges, and emerge stronger, proving that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

The girls this season have created lifelong friendships, and a strong foundation for girls/women’s rugby in our area. As they look to grow rugby in the upcoming seasons they welcome all “newbies” to join them on their journey, and in their community. Wolves Spring Sports came to WIN

Ifyou have been following SRVHS sports, well, you have not been disappointed. It’s been a busy follow for sure. SRV’s baseball team clinched the EBAL championship with a 3-2 win in the 9th in extra innings with a walk-off win vs. Granada. SRV’s women’s lacrosse won EBAL/NCS champions, as well. They ended their season with a record of 24-0 and beat Oak Ridge 14-7; an amazing job indeed.

I was able to attend SRV Softball vs. Amador for the EBAL championship game at Amador Valley High School. Another clutch performance by SRV. It never felt like SRV was going to lose. They led the entire game coming into the 7th, until some timely hits by Amador were able to get a run in to make it 2-1. But SRV’s pitching by Paige McLeod and the defense were just too much for Amador. Don’t get me wrong, it came down to the last out with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but ended with a strikeout by Paige McLeod to seal the EBAL championship. From everything I’m hearing, it may be their first ever.... I guess I should fact check this! But given the fact I have followed this team for the last couple years, I wouldn’t doubt they’re the first. They always had a positive vibe and were tough as nails!

Great job SRVHS sports!

Samm was a 4 year varsity athlete and captain her junior and senior year. Her favorite memory is winning the EBAL championship. Off of the field she loves to spend time with her family and friends. Samm will be continuing her education at UCLA in the fall.

Paige was a 4 year varsity athlete and captain her senior year. Her favorite memory from softball is winning the softball national championship on her travel team. Off the field, she loves to listen

When not on the baseball field, he enjoys working out, hanging out with friends and fishing. Next year he plans to play baseball at UCSB and study communications.

Jordan’s favorite baseball memory is this year, when he threw a complete game in the Fresno Tournament. When he isn’t on the baseball field he enjoys lifting at 24 Hour Fitness. His favorite quote is “I see no greater life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and impossible” (Nietzche). He plans to play baseball at Ohlone College in the fall and study either kinesiology or philosophy.

Kam’s favorite baseball memory was on his birthday in little league all stars where he hit a walk off grand slam. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with his friends. His favorite quote is “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6). In the future, he plans on studying aerospace engineering and astrophysics. He has not committed to a school yet.

Nic’s favorite baseball memory was when he lived in Australia, where he played in the Australian Little League National Championships. When not playing baseball, he enjoys working out, watching sports and spending time with his friends and family. His favorite quote is “I’ve failed over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed” (Michael Jordan). Next year he is attending University of Arizona and studying exploratory studies.

Bryce’s favorite baseball memory is beating De La Salle. When he isn’t on the field, he enjoys hanging out with friends. His favorite quote is “Stay Hard” (David Goggins). In the fall he plans to study business at Arizona State.

Mason’s favorite baseball memory is hitting his first homerun on his birthday. When not on the baseball field, he enjoys hanging out with friends, lifting, and playing other sports. His favorite quote is “If you’re afraid to fail, then you’re probably going to fail” (Kobe Bryant). Next year he plans to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to study communication studies.

Robbie’s favorite baseball memory was when he was 12, when he traveled to Cooperstown and hung out with his team. When not on the field, he enjoys hanging out with friends. His favorite quote is “I don’t understand why people would want to get rid of pigeons. They don’t bother no one.” (Mike Tyson). In the fall he plans to attend DVC for two years, then transfer to a UC; and his area of study is undecided.
