November - 2020 TANZANIA IMPLEMENTS A WORLD BANKFUNDED TOURISM PROJECT
Best for domestic, rural and regional tourism in East and Southern Africa, the World Bankfunded Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth project is under implementation in Tanzania. Implementation of the six-year Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) involves the development of community-based tourism projects to empower local communities in taking part in tourism activities. The REGROW project is mostly targeting the development of tourism programs for local communities living neighbors to wildlife parks in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania where tourism and tourist businesses are far less developed. Taking advantage of rich tourist attractions, mostly wildlife and nature, REGROW project will attract Domestic Tourism for local Tanzanians, Regional Tourism for visitors from Southern African states, and international class tourists.
FRANCE BECOMES PREMIER INBOUND TRAVEL MARKET TO TANZANIA
France has been ranked as the leading inbound travel market to Tanzania, since the latter re-opened its skies for travel amidst the world’s COVID-19 pandemic. Tanzania reopened its airspace for international passenger flights on June 1, 2020, after a 3-month stint of COVID-19, becoming the pioneer country in East Africa to welcome tourists to sample its endowed attractions. Latest statistics from the state-run conservation and tourism agency show that France is leading in terms of number of tourist arrivals in Tanzania over the 3-month period covering July, August, and September 2020. Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) Assistant Conservation Commissioner in charge of the business portfolio, Ms. Beatrice Kessy, said that records indicate a total of 3,062 French tourists visited national parks in the period under review, raising the France flag high as the top international tourist market for Tanzania amidst the crisis and overtaking the USA with 2,327 holidaymakers. The third in the list of key Tanzania tourist source markets is Germany with 1,317 visitors, followed by the UK with 1,051 tourists in fourth position.

TANZANIA WORLD’S SAFEST TRAVEL DESTINATION
The World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC) has endorsed Tanzania as the “safest travel” destination globally. The nod by the forum for the Travel and Tourism Industry comes as more than five international flights resumed their flights to the country, amid the Covid-19 pandemic which continues to ravage different parts of the world. Natural Resources and Tourism Minister, Dr. Hamisi Kigwangalla noted that the endorsement was a compelling indication by the Government on how keen and determined it was in maintaining sound preventive measures to contain the deadly virus. Dr. Kigwangalla was optimistic that the certification by the WTTC will restore Tanzania’s confidence on the tourism front and lure more visitors to the country.

Mafia Island Tanzania’s secret Paradise
Mafia is an Indian Ocean island with gorgeous islets, beaches all to one’s self, World class diving and snorkeling close by historical sites and a natural untainted culture.”
22
Dar Life I NOVEMBER 2020
M
afiq is famous for deep sea fishing, scuba diving and whale sharks watching. Aquatic life is abundant and the coral gardens are pristine due to the protection of the Mafia
Island Marine Park. There are no crowded infrastructures in the place, towering skyscrapers and pollution. It is truly a natural experience.” Together with Pemba and Unguja, Mafia Island forms the Tanzanian Spice Islands, the largest of a small archipelago of islands and atolls and is truly a paradise in the Indian Ocean. It lies in Rufiji River’s mouth in South Tanzania and it is the southernmost of three islands (incl. Pemba & Zanzibar). It is located off the coast of Tanzania; 25kms from
the mainland and 130kms from Dar es Salaam scattered over the Indian Ocean 21 km off the Rufiji River Delta in central Tanzania. The largest of a score of islands, atolls and tidal sandbars, Mafia itself is approximately 50 km long by 15km across, and is surrounded by a barrier reef teeming with marine life. Almost half the coastline of Mafia, some 822 square kms has been gazetted as a marine park by the government.
HISTORY AND CULTURE
Mafia has had a prominent place in the history of the East Coast of Africa and retains a traditional culture and friendly people with a population of 35,000 who depend on fishing and agriculture. Mafia was part of the sultanate of Kilwa and prospered as a settlement during Kilwa’s rise as an economic power. The island lies across the trade routes from the Gulf and has seen Egyptian, Omani, GrecoRoman, Chinese, Portuguese, English and German occupation.
BEACH AND BAY
Mafia Island is located in the magnificent southern circuit of Tanzania and Zanzibar and is part of a fascinating array of parks, reserves and Indian Ocean islands. The coral reefs, bays, sand bars, lagoons and beaches of the Mafia Archipelago are now part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania’s first marine national park. Only a thousand visitors a year come here so it remains very much a traditional Swahili Coast destination and really can lay claim to the title of “unspoiled”. Mafia is the destination for those who truly wish to “get away from it all”. Even after two decades of a love affair with Mafia, we are still discovering new beaches, previously unrecorded birds, plants, fish and corals, new dive and snorkel sites and we continue developing new excursions to enjoy the “ISLAND LIFE”.
NOVEMBER 2020 I Dar Life
23
The Marine Park - over eight hundred square kilometres - ensures Mafia´s fragile biodiversity is preserved. Over four hundred and sixty species of fish and more than fifty genera of corals are here to be enjoyed by snorkeling and scuba diving. Excursions to coastal forests to walk and picnic, and excellent bird-watching in five different habitat types from the reef flats and shores to dry woodlands and coastal forests are part of our activities programme. Road safaris to other areas of Mafia complement the visitor’s experience and understanding of traditional village life. Kirongwe village is famous for its clay pots, Jimbo for its ukili mats, Mlola Forest, RasMbizi coconut plantation and Kitoni.
BIRD WATCHING
Bird watching in Mafia adds a very interesting dimension to a Tanzania wildlife safari, as the visitor will see many species of shorebird, including migrants such as the Crab Plover, and other species found in coastal thickets and mangroves that cannot be observed in the National Parks and Reserves. The visitor will see many spectacular rollers (Lilacbreasted) and bee-eaters (Whitecheeked) between Kilindoni and

Kinasi, and there are five species of sunbird in the Kinasi gardens. The black or white Dimorphic Heron is the common species at roosts in Chole Bay. The Kinasi Nature Trail has been designed with bird-watching very much in mind.
MAFIA ISLAND WILDLIFE
The sea around Mafia Island hosts an outstanding mosaic of tropical marine habitat including coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves, inter-tidal flats, reef flats, lagoons and coastal forest. These are nesting sites for Green and Hawksbill turtles while Leatherback, Olive Ridley and Loggerhead also occur in Mafia. Sharks, barracuda, grouper, needlefish, moray eels and triggerfish are also prominent in these waters. Also, Torpedoshaped and robust yellow-fin tuna, cobia manta rays and sting rays, swordfish, black marlins and wahoo are Mafia Island wildlife seen in the Marine Park. “Mafia Island is ideal for nature lovers as well and can be a real paradise for tourists, a wonderful destination to round off a wilderness safari or simply put your feet up and unwind! It is a unique and perfect destination as part of a safari package or simply a place to relax and get away from the daily, modern and busy world.”
ACTIVITIES
The main activities guests will be interested in while staying in Mafia Snorkeling, Scuba diving and swimming around the islets and beautiful coral shelves of Chole Bay Swim and snorkel with the amazing whale sharks (usually October-March) Turtle-hatching season from July to September Sailing on traditional jahazis or outrigger ngalawas with local sailors Guided excursions to villages on the islands to see traditional village community life and economic activity, such as boat building and farming
GETTING TO
There are quite a number of scheduled flights flying into and out of Mafia every day. Auric Air, Coastal Aviation, Flight link and Safari Airlink. The flight by plane takes only 45 minutes from Dar es Salaam and 1 hour from Zanzibar or the Selous.
WHEN TO GO
Generally, Mafia is accessible all year round. Mafia has very good weather throughout the year. Virtually straddling the equator means that the island never gets cold and so the only thing to avoid is the rain. The best time to visit is during the dry season: June-August. The wet season is November-March as well as December- February.

WORLD STROKE DAY 2020 JOIN THE MOVEMENT
Stroke; the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death globally is no doubt burgeoning in sub-Saharan Africa due to rising incidence of cardiovascular risks such as metabolic syndrome, hypertension and diabetes. The current trend is being driven by demographic, nutritional and epidemiological transition taking place across low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Stemming this rising trend with proven preventive measures is now mandatory. 9th October of every year is marked as the world stroke day. This year’s world stroke day was themed “Join the Movement” since being active greatly helps reduce the risk of developing a stroke. So, why join the movement? The theme is to raise awareness of stroke prevention through exercise, connection and fun. The health benefits of exercise are no doubt very huge. Exercise helps control weight, while reducing the risk of heart diseases. With regular exercises, the body is able to manage blood sugar and insulin levels. Exercise increases your mental health and mood. Do you often notice how your concentration improves after exercise? It is because exercise helps keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp! One more thing about the theme of this year world stroke day. The theme is aimed to also
54
Dar Life I NOVEMBER 2020
increase social connection and fun! Are we not social being? Yes, we are. Hence; it is good to build and maintain connections in our social circle. Those who survive a stroke face various lifelong challenges such as physical disability, communication difficulties and tend to have loss of interest in daily activity. We must be there for them while we also preach the message of prevention. Anyone can suffer a stroke anytime and anywhere. To date approximately 80 million people have suffered a stroke worldwide. One in 4 adults will have a stroke in their lifetime. The good news is that more than 90% of strokes can be prevented by modifying the risk factors. There is a need to raise awareness of stroke and the risk factors everywhere so that preventive measures can be cultivated. Knowledge of common stroke symptoms such as sudden
weakness of the face, arms and legs as well as sudden loss of sight and speech need to increase among the young and the old! We need to roll back the common risk factors such as overweight, obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes, smoking and alcohol overuse. Can we encourage our public facilities, bus stations, trains, markets, banks and shopping malls to raise this awareness? Oh, I forgot! Our social media influencers may join the movement too. Let us rid Tanzania and Africa of stroke. Yes, we can! Issued by; Dr Philip B. Adebayo, Consultant Neurologist & Dr. Nadeem Kassam, Medicine Resident Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam. SKIN DEEP I
The Benefits of Body Scrubs
s it really true that beauty is only skin deep? Actually, your skin says much more about your health and wellbeing than you think. Clean, radiantlooking skin is a sign of healthiness and a toxin-free body while shallow, dull skin might indicate harmful toxins polluting the body’s systems. In a perfect world we would breathe fresh, unpolluted air, the weather, temperature and humidity would be constant, and our lives would be stress free. The fact is that we live in an environment that is less than perfect...far less! On a daily basis our skin is exposed to pollution, contaminated water and air conditioning that robs our skin of its youthfulness and radiance. Body scrubs have various benefits that are not just
good for your skin but also beneficial for your overall health and well-being. Here are four very good reasons for you to hop over at the spa or grab that pot of sea salt!
Skin Glow
This is probably the biggest reason for you to have a body scrub once every two weeks. Sea salt in particular has many minerals and nutrients that help to re-mineralize your skin, feeding it from the outside.
Exfoliating
This is the most obvious reason, but every minute your skin sheds between 30,000 and 40,000 dead skin cells. They get replaced by new ones but the old ones need to go somewhere. Exfoliation helps to remove the dead skin cells and prevents your skin from looking dull and faded. With exfoliation, the skin’s pores are opened and cleaned out, helping to promote toxins and excess minerals being expelled from the body. Ensure that the scrub you use is smooth to the touch.
Increase Circulation
Body scrubs helps to promote blood flow to your skin and at the same time remove excess fluid through the lymphatic system. A professional therapist will be able to use techniques to push toxic fluids towards the lymph nodes and to increase circulation to the surface layers of the skin.
Improve Cellulite and Ageing
Yes! Regular body scrubs can reduce the dimples caused by cellulite and give your skin a smoother appearance. Regular body scrubs help to promote the formation of collagen in the skin which will leave your skin looking younger and visibly firmer. Try scrubs with coffee or green tea as the key ingredients. They are packed with antioxidants to prevent aging.
To ensure your skin stays radiant and free of toxins and pollutants, it is good to have a professional exfoliation every so often and at home at least once or twice a week. If you have more sensitive skin it would be advisable to scrub it up only once a week. 56

The Ngorongoro Crater, one of the eighth wonder of the world, is set in northern Tanzania, sharing part of the Serengeti plains to the north-west and with the towns of Arusha, Moshi and Mount Kilimanjaro, to the east, and forms part of the unique Serengeti ecosystem. A major ecological survey of the Serengeti Reserve (which at the time included the Ngorongoro) by Dr. Bernhard Grizmek and his

late son in the 1950’s resulted in the establishment of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in 1959. At the moment the conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It has also been believed to have been taller than the famous Kilimanjaro before its inactive volcano collapsed and formed an unbroken caldera crater, 610 meters deep, 13 mile (20km) wide about two million years ago. THE CRATER GAME VIEWING IS TRULY INCREDIBLE, THE LANDSCAPE AND VIEWS OF THE SURROUNDING CRATER HIGHLANDS ARE OUT OF THE WORLD.
The conservation area covers about 3185 sq miles (8250 sq km), the crater covers about 100 sq miles (260 sq km). It is also home to over 3000 different species including the endangered black rhinoceros; the crater has a forest and lake which support the ecosystem in the park. Ngorongoro crater has been listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site. The Ngorongoro conservation area is where the world-famous archaeological site of Oldupai George is allocated. The discoveries of fossil footprints on lava rock as well as ancestral humans which are believed to be 3.8 million years old can be seen at the museum. Two main geological rifts run through the Ngorongoro area. Nine volcanoes in the Ngorongoro highlands were formed during the past four million years. One of these, Oldonyo Lengai
(Mountain of God) is still active. Over millennia the ash and dust from each eruption has been carried by the winds to form the fertile soils of the Serengeti Plains. The earliest sign of mankind in the Ngorongoro is at Laetoli, where hominid footprints are preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years ago. Further north on the tourism circuit, Olduvai Gorge has yielded a wealth of hominid and animal remains. THE MAASAI COMMUNITY OF THE NGORONGORO CRATER For thousands of years, a succession of cattle herding people moved into the Ngorongoro area, lived there for some time and then moved on, sometimes forced out by other tribes. About 200 years ago, the Maasai arrived and have since colonized the area in substantial numbers with their traditional
way of life allowing them to live in harmony with the wildlife and the environment. The Maasai are allowed to take their animals into the Ngorongoro Crater for water and grazing but not to live or cultivate there. Elsewhere in the Ngorongoro, they have the right to roam freely. Visitors normally stop the Maasai cultural homestead, one on the road to the Serengeti National Park and another close to the Serengeti Sopa Lodge at the Irkeepusi Village. BIRDS WATCHING IN NGORONGORO CRATER The mixture of forest, canyons, grassland plains, lakes and marshes provide habitats for a wide range of birdlife. White storks, yellow wagtails and swallows mingle with the local inhabitants: stilts, saddle-bill storks, ibis, ruff and various species of ducks. Lesser Flamingos fly in to feed from
their breeding ground at Lake Natron. Distinctive grassland birds – ostrich, kori bustards and crowned cranes-abound. SAFARI AND WILD LIFE EXPERIENCE Ngorongoro Crater, a deep volcanic crater is the jewel in Ngorongoro crown. It is the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world. The Ngorongoro Crater is 19.2 kilometer in diameter, 610 meters in depth and 304 square kilometres in area. The rich pasture and permanent water of the Ngorongoro Crater floor supports a large resident population of wildlife of up to 25,000, predominantly grazing animals. These include wildebeest, Zebra, Gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest and warthog. The swamps and forest provide additional resources for hippos, elephants, waterbucks, reedbucks, and

THINGS TO BE SEEN AROUND NGORONGORO CRATER Things to be seen around Ngorongoro Crater are Laetoli and Olduvai Gorge, Lake Magadi, Lerai Forest, Gorigor Swamp, The Grassland, Oldonyo Lengai, Olmoti Crater and Embakaai Crate, Lake Natron, Gol Mountains (Oldonyo Gol Hills), Nasera Rock, Oldeani Mountain, Lake Eyasi and Serengeti Plains.
BEST TIME TO VISIT NGORONGORO CRATER Many people wonder when is the best time to go to the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater is a year-round destination as most of the animals remain in the crater year-round, ensuring great sightings no matter when you decide to visit the Ngorongoro Crater.
LAETOLI AND OLDUVAI GORGE At Laetoli, west of Ngorongoro Crater, hominid footprints were preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years ago and represent some of the earliest signs of mankind in the world. Three separate tracks of a smallbrained upright- walking early hominid, Australopithecus Afarensis, a creature about 1.2 to 1.4 meters high, were found. Imprints of these are displayed in the Olduvai museum. More advanced descendants of Laetoli’s hominids were found further north, buried in the layers of the I00 metres deep Olduvai Gorge. Excavations, mainly by the archaeologists, Louis and Mary Leakey, yielded four different kinds of hominid, showing a gradual increase in brain size and in the complexity of their stone tools. The first skull of Zinjanthropus commonly known as ‘Nutcracker Man’, who lived about 1.7 million years ago, were found here. The excavation sites have been preserved for the public viewing and word continues during the dry season, coordinated by the Tanzania government’s department of antiquities.

bushbucks, baboons and vervet monkeys. Bull elephants of the Ngorongoro Crater regularly descend to the Ngorongoro Crater floor. The large breeding herds wander throughout the forest rim where they find the most suitable food. The steep inner slopes provide a habitat for dikdik and the rare mountain reedbuck. Jackals thrive in the crater and bat eared foxes live in the short grass areas. Predatory animals in the Ngorongoro Crater like leopards, lions, cheetahs, several cats, live off the abundant wildlife; large packs of hyenas roam the Ngorongoro crater, making their own kills and scavenging from others. Lions in particular are abundant in the Ngorongoro Crater. Thanks to the anti-poaching patrols, the black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater are relatively safe and the numbers are increasing with time. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can be certain of seeing the rhino in its natural environment. Birdlife in the Ngorongoro Crater is superb. The mixture of forest, canyons, grassland plains, lakes and marshes provided habitats for a wide range of birdlife.

“You’ve finally landed the job. Is this a good time to settle in and take it easy for a while, or is this the worst time to take your foot off the “career gas pedal?” A lot of people in this situation might think, “Whew – now I can relax, cruise a while and rest on my laurels.” Actually, your work is just beginning – but so is your “glory!” a “success file” and track your accomplishments and contributions. Make note of the positive feedback you get from others in conversation and in writing – from clients, managers, clients, colleagues, vendors, etc.
. Begin building your own in-house contact network. Cultivate good relationships with everyone – including the employees above and below your level. Get to know people’s names. Reach out to the mail guy, the security guard, the IT guru, your manager’s executive assistant – everyone!

. Maintain a healthy balance between your work life and your private life. Make sure that you don’t “go overboard” with your enthusiasm for your new job. Family time, hobbies and “recharging your batteries” are all part of your long-term professional effectiveness and success. In summary, you must focus on garnering respect, visibility and credibility during your first 90 days on the job. The precedents you establish during this period will tend to last for your entire tenure at that organization. So this “thumbprint period” is critically important to your long-term success!

Experts such as Michael Watkins believe that you have 90 days in a new job to make your impact and create the permanent impression that people in the organization will have of you and your leadership capabilities. Having worked with thousands of executives who have successfully secured new positions, in my opinion, there are six priorities that you should focus on during the first 90 days: • -Assimilating into your new position • -Aligning with the company’s business priorities and culture • -Developing habits of “Perpetual Career Management”

ORAL HEALTH DURING PREGNANCY Intelligence & Care by Tasakhtaa Global Hospital
Is oral assessment important during pregnancy? It is recommended that oral and dental assessment be done during pregnancy. Poor oral health has a direct negative effect in pregnancy both to the mother and the fetus health. The mass has little concern that poor oral health during pregnancy can lead to complications like low birth weight, premature rupture of membrane and preterm delivery. There are certain myths like “you can’t have your tooth extracted until you give birth” which hinders most pregnant women to seek for dental consultation even during their emergency dental incidences not knowing the risk of dental and oral diseases in the future of their pregnancy. Others even went on neglecting basic oral health care like teeth brushing with fluoride toothpaste and mouth washing as a result ending having periodontal diseases which may lead to teeth mobility or even falling out, although some blames it not to themselves but to the pregnancy itself saying “You have to remove at least one tooth in every pregnancy” which is in true sense not necessarily once you

Dar Life I NOVEMBER 2020
take care of your oral and dental health as it is recommended. What brings dental diseases in pregnant women? Among the group of people who are at high risk of having dental and oral diseases are pregnant women. Vomiting during pregnancy can lead to erosion of teeth due to some acid coming out during vomiting nevertheless if it occurs frequently, pregnancy itself can worsen the present gingival disease due to reduced immunity and increased blood flow to the gums.
What is the best time for treatment? Whether the disease has developed during the pregnancy or it was there before the pregnancy it is highly recommended that all dental and oral problems be managed as soon as they are diagnosed so as to reduce the risks of interfering with the general health of both the mother and the child. The oral health management guidelines explain that if the dental management requires administering some medications or chemicals to the
mother during the procedure is its better be avoided in the irst 3 months so as to reduce the teratogenic effects of drugs to the fetus because this is the time of fetal development, also during the last trimester it is better to avoid elective dental treatment because the mother’s condition at that time may interfere with positioning during the treatment and might compromise her airway or blood circulation. The second trimester is considered to be the best time for dental management although as stated earlier emergency intervention should not wait for any trimester to come but it should be taken care accordingly. What should be done? It is the responsibility from doctors, nurses and the general public to encourage oral health assessment during pregnancy nevertheless including it in routine maternity visits so as to reduce the risks which might rise secondarily to negligence. For more information on oral health during pregnancy, please visit Tasakhtaa Global Hospital or call us at: +255 242 232341.

“Oral and dental health problems are of special importance in pregnant women. Hormonal changes in pregnancy, particularly estrogen changes and reduced immunity, can cause inflammation, bleeding, increased sensitivity to gingiva and increased risk of bacterial infection as a result, resulting in increased gum disease. However, it’s of no doubt only a small number of pregnant women consider oral health in their routine maternity visits, factors being low economy, lack of knowledge about its importance in pregnancy, not having dental problems which necessitates emergency dental intervention and never the least not giving importance.”

he waters of Tanzania are blessed with a variety of reefs plus tropical fish that can best be viewed by diving off the Tanzanian mainland. In addition you can enjoy diving trips to any of the islands of Tanzania such as Mafia, Zanzibar and Pemba which are located just off the country’s shoreline. If you are planning to visit Tanzania, Below are some of the best water adventures you can enjoy while in Tanzania.
KITESURFING
Kitesurfing has become the hottest and most popular upand-coming activity in Zanzibar. Kitesurfing centres are popping up all along the east coast of the island, providing adrenaline seeking visitors with the chance to undertake lessons and get out on the waves while on holiday.
CANOEING
Canoeing trips are available in the Arusha National Park and are a wonderful experience, drifting past herds of elephant, giraffe, hippo and buffalo as you cruise along the shores of the lake surrounded by countless flocks of birds. Canoes are also available for rental throughout Zanzibar, which provide a perfect opportunity to enjoy the rare birds of Zanzibar’s many mangrove forests.
BLUE SAFARIS
The soft chug of an outboard engine, or the whispering flap of a canvas sail; the so-called ‘blue safaris’ in Tanzania are a tranquil and relaxing way to watch wildlife, enjoy snorkelling, or simply admire the beautiful scenery of the water’s edge. This is one of the best ways to see
the Selous Game Reserve, up the huge muddy brown sweep of the Rufiji River, spotting hundreds of resident hippos and crocodiles. Sail into chimpanzee territory on a dhow, skimming over the fresh, crystal waters of Lake Tanganyika to Mahale Mountains National Park, or travel up the Wami River in Saadani, surrounded by amazing birdlife, hippos and crocodiles. Visit the Indian Ocean islands, sometimes several in a day, enjoying the coral reefs, marine life and birds of each island along the way.
