ello DARPAN readers, we hope you are enjoying the beautiful sunny weather. We are so excited to present our May-June issue featuring some delightful articles — making it a perfect companion for summer reading. One the cover is the stunning Global BC broadcaster, Neetu Garcha. The beauty-with-brains recently started her new role as anchor of the weekend Global News Hour at 6pm. From reporting every day for nearly three weeks straight on the 2017 BC wildfires where she witnessed firsthand the way communities come together in times of crisis, and covering the BC Green and BC NDP election-night headquarters in 2017 and 2020 respectively, to investigating into some Subway restaurants in the Lower Mainland that led to employees receiving compensation they were owed by their employer, travelling to Greece where she was on the front lines of Europe’s refugee crisis, and producing a series she filmed in Haiti at a school built by volunteers and its connection to an elementary school classroom in BC — Neetu’s passion and curiosity
is limitless — and it is beautifully reflected through her stories that demand change and answers. The Global BC Reporter/Anchor has covered everything from crime and politics to breaking news and international crises. Read her story as she talks about her journey, challenges and some of her most memorable stories. Another interesting news is that the University of Calgary is soon slated to launch the nation’s first-of-its-kind Sikh Studies program, spearheaded by a dynamic duo - Dr. Harjeet Grewal, Professor at the University of Calgary and Jay Dhillon, law student from Thompson Rivers University. The issue also includes an exclusive interview with the new Consul General of India in Vancouver, Mr. Manish. He talks about his role, his goals for the consulate, and shares how India is dealing with the Covid-19 crisis. For a bit of entertainment, we have an interesting article on six Indian web series featuring popular Bollywood celebs to look forward to in the coming month. More and more Bollywood stars are embracing the platform and marking their OTT debuts. From thriller to cop drama, to dark comedy to women-centric stories — there is indeed some promising content lined up for OTT release in the coming year. So get the popcorn ready and start watching. We hope you enjoy this issue and continue to support us in our work. Share your feedback and suggestions with us by leaving a line or two on our social media sites. Hope you have a pleasant and safe summer season!

DARPAN Canada. For the Indian Diaspora it has great historical significance as the first immigrants from India arrived here in 1904 and established themselves in British Columbia. So, Vancouver has a very old connection with India and today the Greater Vancouver area has one of the most thriving population of Indian descent in Canada. The city has it own charm and it grows on you with passage of time. I am also very impressed with the enterprising spirit of the people of Greater Vancouver. Although the Covid-19 restrictions have prevented regular contacts, but I have been able to meet in person or virtually some of the most interesting people here from all walks of life. I look forward to explore the place and meet new people in the near future when life returns to normal.

CONSUL GENERAL OF INDIA IN VANCOUVER “People here have to understand two things – no government that is democratically elected works against its own people to whom it has to go back to seek re-election every five years; and that India is going through a process of necessary reforms in many sectors, including in the agriculture sector.”

1 Prior to becoming the Consul General of India in Vancouver, where were you posted and what was your role?
Before assuming the duties of Consul General of India, I was posted at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi. In Delhi, I worked briefly in the Sushma Swaraj Foreign Service Institute. I also served as Joint Secretary managing India’s bilateral relationship with ASEAN countries, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island Countries, and later in the Overseas Indian Affairs Division. In terms of my overseas assignment, I got the opportunity to serve in Moscow, Tashkent, Prague, Colombo and Jakarta. In between my overseas assignment I also served in MEA in various roles looking after bilateral and multilateral affairs. 2 What were you looking forward
to the most as the Consul General of India in Vancouver

I was very excited at the thought of bringing my contribution to further our relationship between India and the five important provinces in Western Canada, namely British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and Northwest Territories. I looked forward to building on the existing trade relations between India and these provinces. Since three of these five provinces also have a large number of people of Indian descent, I was particularly excited that as India’s Consul General in Vancouver I am getting an opportunity to connect with them and bring them the Consular services that they need and expect from their Consulate. Western Canada is very important in overall India-Canada relationship, and since it was my first assignment in this part of the world, I looked forward to my assignment. 3 How has your experience in Vancouver been so far?
Vancouver is not only a beautiful city but it is also a trade gateway to Western
DARPAN

4 What are some of the challenges you would have to overcome in your current role of Consul General?
Every diplomat aspires to leave a legacy of better relations between the host country and his own. Building even more closer ties between India and the respective provinces under my jurisdiction and enhancing two-way trade and investments are the two main focus areas for me. However, to achieve these objectives we need support of the other side. British Columbia remains our largest trading partner in Western Canada and I believe that much more can be done together. I am very happy to state that Saskatchewan and Alberta have emerged as very key provinces where we have a clear mutual understanding that trade and investments are a growing part of our relationship. In fact, Saskatchewan has recently opened a trade office in New Delhi. Our trade relations with Yukon and Northwest Territories are currently very small. 5 With the farmer’s protest and with lots of families living in Vancouver being impacted by it, what role can your office play to ensure a peaceful resolution to this conflict?
People here have to understand two things – no government that is democratically elected works against its own people to whom it has to go back to seek re-election every five years; and that India is going through a process of necessary reforms in many sectors, including in the agriculture sector, which employs 60% population that contributes 18% to our GDP. The Government of India, with a view to bring greater productivity and prosperity to the agricultural sector in India, has introduced legislation to reform India’s agricultural markets. While these reforms have been appreciated by farmers in several
Indian provinces, some farmers’ unions have also registered their protest. These internal developments in India’s vibrant democracy have also had an echo in Canada, with some organizations mobilizing opinion and protests in keeping with their provincial affinities in India. Canadian media has also devoted significant attention to these developments although most coverage has not been very objective and lacking in understanding of the farm bills. The enactment of these laws is part of the government’s promise to the people of India to double the income of India’s farmers – a segment that has long remained among the most poor and vulnerable in the country. It is part of our ongoing efforts to modernize India’s economy and it is only natural that entrenched and established interests, which are often very powerful and well-funded, would seek to oppose such changes. The envisaged reforms in the agricultural sector in India are of a transformational nature and would create conditions for prosperity and empowerment of the largest segment of India’s population. The ultimate beneficiaries of these reforms are the small and marginal farmers of India who have been shackled by a traditional system that does not remunerate innovation and enterprise. The new laws have been enacted by the Parliament of India after due process and debate. This was preceded by much debate and discussion, including in a series of committees and commissions established over the past two decades that repeatedly suggested such reforms. The quest to improve the life of its poor farmers, the legislative process by which those goals are sought to be achieved, the peaceful protests that are natural with such change and the process to find a consensus are all Indian. The Indian Constitution provides sufficient avenues in the executive, legislative and judicial domains for resolution of such matters in a peaceful manner. The people of India look to their overseas friends for support and understanding as they go through this process. 6 What’s your take of current India-Canada relations? What can be done further to strengthen the ties between the two nations?
India-Canada bilateral ties are underpinned by shared values of democracy, pluralism, expanding economic engagement, regular high-level interactions and long-standing people-to-people ties. India attaches great importance in taking forward its strategic partnership with Canada. We have very good economic linkages, but more needs to be done to further deepen the economic relations. economic progress and economic reforms provide ample opportunities. Canadian Pension funds remains a strong partner for India’s infrastructure development. Canada is an important destination of higher education for Indian students. Today, there are more than 2, 30,000 Indian students in Canada. We need to promote and facilitate the movement of skilled professionals. This will benefit both our countries and make the economy of Canada more competitive. Our technology partnership has huge possibilities. Our scientists and researchers have been discovering new technologies and systems which will have a positive impact on both India and Canada. Our governments have also agreed to strengthen our cooperation in the field of information and communication technology. Canada has been an energy super power and it can meet our growing energy requirements. We have expanded our energy dialogue and working on to expand the future of our energy partnership. The strength of our cooperation in the field of atomic energy is being reflected in the unhindered supply of uranium. We have added nuclear science, technology and innovation to our cooperation. We are partnering to strengthen our security cooperation. Terrorism and militancy are a threat to democratic and pluralistic societies like India and Canada. It is important that we come together in order to counter these forces. There should be no place for those who use community for political purposes and who create division. Those who challenge the sovereignty, unity and integrity of our countries cannot be tolerated too. People-to-people contact is the concrete base for our strategic partnership. India is proud of the achievements of Indian community in Canada. We are committed to building friendship and harmony with
the Indian community in Canada and we want their active participation in India’s progress and development. From business and investment to energy, from science and innovation to education and skill development, from oceans to space, India and Canada can work together in every sector. India and Canada are natural partners with shared values. I hope for a stronger partnership between the two countries and hope for a bright future for both the countries due to this. I believe that this relationship can be taken to the next level as both countries can work together in several areas in a post pandemic era where economic and trade relations will assume more importance. 7 The general perception is that the consulate services can be made smoother. Do you feel the same? Is there more being done to offer better services?
I feel that our services are quite smooth and time bound. In any public service delivery platform, there is always room for improvement. That has been our collective endeavor at the High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulates in Vancouver and Toronto. It is also a fact that one does not hear a word of praise from 20 satisfied clients but the complaint from one unsatisfied person resonates the loudest. We have been working through out the pandemic and the restrictions that were imposed by local health authorities to ensure that Visa and Consular services are not hampered. Indian Missions in Canada did not suspend Consular services during the pandemic. As a result, people from here have continued to travel to India to meet their loved ones and to visit them during these trying times. Last year in May and beyond when most people were staying home due to the pandemic the Consulate personnel were at the YVR airport to facilitate evacuation
through Vande Bharat Mission flights of Indian visitors and students stranded in Canada due to sudden lockdowns and suspension of air travel. We have also managed to provide Life Certificates to thousands of Indo-Canadians who draw their pension from India. We also provide consular services after office hours or on holidays in emergency cases. Due to COVID-19 pandemic we have to adopt to different working methods and a large number of applications are received by post. The challenge for us is that a huge percentage of applications are either incomplete, have mistakes or without correct documents. This leads to unnecessary delays in processing. I would, therefore, request everyone to file the application correctly, with proper documentation. The details of requirements are on our website www.cgivancouver.in. 8 What plans do you have
for Indo-Canadians living in Vancouver? We would be celebrating the 75th anniversary of India’s independence on 15 August, 2022. To mark this momentous occasion, the Government of India has decided to celebrate the entire period from March 2021 to August 2023 as a period to celebrate the 75th Independence Day under the title ‘India@75’. The ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ was launched by Prime Minister Modi from Sabarmati Ashram on 12 March, 2021, to celebrate India@75. The celebrations will be dedicated to the people of India. During this period there are plans to showcase India’s rich heritage, culture and achievements through broad themes like Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bhara; Har Rajya, Har Bhasha, Bharat ka Gauravshali Itihaas, Vishwa Guru Bharat, Atmanirbhar Bharat, Vaishwik or Global Outreach etc. A Shatabdi Sankalp will be taken to serve as a guiding light or vision for the next 25 years because year 2047 will mark the 100 years of India’s independence. Consulate has already started the celebrations in partnership with Indian diaspora. I am reaching out to our diaspora through community leaders and IndoCanadian Associations inviting them to bring their ideas and activities so that we can jointly organize India@75 celebrations. 9 What vision do you have for the growth of the consulate in Vancouver?
The Consulate is here to act as a bridge between the host government and its own, and between the people of its host country and its own. It becomes stronger and meaningful with the support that it receives from its host government and its Diaspora. It’s a two-way relationship. I am certain that
DARPAN
the host governments in our jurisdiction will be able to set its priorities on that relationship and we will be able to grow our engagement with all the five provinces in political, commercial and economic, trade and investment, culture and education, and science and technology. We would also like to strive and enhance better delivery of consular services to Indian diaspora, including NRIs, PIOs, OCI and Canadian citizens. There is huge untapped potential in promoting bilateral trade, technology and investments, and identifying opportunities for attracting FDI into India and we will work in this area. 10 With the Covid-19 crisis in India what would you like to say to the people here and how can they get involved to help people back home?
I will use the oft-used phrase “we are all in this together”. The COVID 19 pandemic is testing the limits of healthcare and human endurance everywhere. India managed to escape the first wave that wreaked havoc in the US and Europe, but now with the second wave we saw a huge surge in cases in India. The surge was sudden and so big that it overwhelmed the healthcare and preparedness. The Government of India and State Governments were prepared but no one anticipated a tsunami-like situation. Indians are resilient and fighters and rise to the challenges. Our frontline warriors, doctors, health workers in coordination with Central and State Governments are managing the crisis. The Government is ramping up supplies of critical supplies and augmenting health infrastructure. Vaccination drive is also going on at a rapid pace and over 170 million doses have been given. We are a huge country with over 1.3 billion people. India has more people than Europe and North America put together. So, in absolute numbers the cases in India will obviously be higher. But in terms of cases and deaths per million population, India stands at 110th place in the world or so. The oxygen supply situation has stabilized and we are seeing steady recovery and stabilization of the situation. We are hopeful that in the coming weeks the situation will become much better. We are grateful that the world is coming together to provide support to India by way of oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators that are most needed at this time. Canada has also responded with help. India stood with the rest of the world and provided medicines and vaccine when others needed it and it is good that the others are now standing with us. We should all pray and hope that we see a global reduction in pandemic in the coming months.

anada is home to the largest population of Sikhs in the Sikh diaspora. With over 700,000 Sikhs in the country, it is no surprise that the time has come to reflect and represent Sikhism in the education system. Hoping to accomplish just this, the University of Calgary is soon slated to launch the nation’s first-of-its-kind

Sikh Studies program, spearheaded by a dynamic duo. Jay Dhillon, currently pursuing a Degree in Law from Thompson Rivers University’s Faculty of Law, took an introductory Sikh studies course with Dr. Harjeet Grewal in 2017. For him, the class was very engaging and interesting, laying out Sikh philosophies and principles, alongside its evolution over time in the world and in Canada. Further conversations led Dhillon and Dr. Grewal to realize that there is no real Sikh Studies program in Canada. Some universities do offer courses about the Punjabi language, but no programs exist focused exclusively on Sikhism. The student and professor decided to take matter into their own hands. While Dhillon’s interest in the creation of the program bloomed after taking the course,

“We frame this as a multicultural approach, in which anyone can partake. With this breadth, there is both Sikh history applicability and community building. Students interact with Sikhs in their daily lives and want to learn more about Sikhism,” says Dr. Harjeet Grewal. Dr. Grewal has practically grown up with a keen interest in Sikhism. Born in British Columbia, Dr. Grewal moved to Edmonton in the 1980s and was raised in Alberta. As an undergrad, Dr. Grewal specialized in Molecular Genetics at the University of Alberta for four years. However, he was personally attached to Sikhism and wanted to know more about it. This led him to attending the University of British Columbia for Asian Studies, where he became especially interested in the intellectual components of Sikh traditions and often found himself

questioning why they had not been highlighted enough. Throughout his Masters, he was quite engaged in the philosophical and literary aspects of Sikh literature and began to further his interest by pursuing at the PhD level at the University of Michigan. In his works, he studied the structure of the literature what is embedded in it in terms of ideas. Recognizing the valuable stories, literature, and poetry such a program could bring to the table, Dr. Grewal and Dhillon started the journey towards creating a legacy through the establishment of a Sikh Studies program at the University of Calgary. Alongside his active involvement, Dr. Grewal describes the initiative to be one that is student-led. Benefitting from the currently-offered course content and Dr. Grewal’s teaching style, students began connecting with alumni, other students, and community members to kickstart a Sikh studies program. “One of the main impacts this program will bring is self-confidence. Many students sometimes feel under-confident and don’t feel up to par when it comes to their Sikh heritage. When you learn more, you have more to be proud of,” says Dhillon. While a positive aspect of the program will entail a learning opportunity to become better Sikhs, the courses will not just be limited to Sikh Students. For non-Sikh students, such courses encourage acknowledgement of Sikhs, and a better understanding of their Sikh classmates and co-workers. Dr. Grewal describes, “We frame this as a multicultural approach, in which anyone can partake. With this breadth, there is both Sikh history applicability and community building.

Dr. Harjeet Grewal
Professor at the University of Calgary Students interact with Sikhs in their daily lives and want to learn more about Sikhism. Even in current courses, we have had students from every background you can imagine.” Dr. Grewal’s stance is that we are still coming into grips with where we are within our country. The gap right now is a knowledge gap. Allowing people who want to learn more to see who Sikhs are and how those teaching can be applied to one’s daily life enables closure of that gap. Dhillon shares that he still takes learnings from the course he took and applies it in his life, “While attending law school, I constantly ask myself how I can be an advocate for voices that are not really spoken for. The values of autonomy, liberty, and justice are always at the back of my mind and I am striving to integrate my Sikh values into becoming a better law student. The courses can be applied into becoming a better teacher, doctor, engineer, worker, and human.” As of now, University of Calgary does offer an Introduction to Sikhism course, which explores the components of key Sikh concepts, central texts, and main practices. Dr. Grewal details that the second course offering will be a course surrounding Sikh diaspora and what it means to be a community that is living in a hostile atmosphere laced with racism and antagonism. Further, a course on Sikh philosophy will touch on themes of
social justice, Sikh ethics, and what it means to be human. Sikh literature courses will dive into a range of early texts, colonial writing, and the transition to modern writing. “The intention is to extend these courses so that students can exhaust the option to minor in Sikh Studies,” explains Grewal. The program will maintain focus on language and literature. Course related to culture and higher-level courses to do with themes on religion will be offered. Sikhs in modernity, democracy in Sikhism, multiculturalism in Sikhism, and contemporary issues are expected to branch out from the program. The long-term vision, however, is to create a Chair for the Sikh Studies program. This would be the first in Canada, allowing for a research component that could become the catalyst towards a more multidisciplinary approach. “Simply put, there is not a lot of research out there about Sikh Studies. Having a chair allows for research, a dedicated focus and a voice that has the program’s best interests at heart,” Dhillon articulates. When it comes to the University of Calgary, the university has been on board since the very beginning. As per Dr. Grewal, they have risen beyond expectations and have gone to great lengths to understand the Sikh community’s history. For the university, this is one of their top projects and the team is getting the most support from the Arts side. Dr. Grewal shows utmost appreciation for the encouragement, “It is just so beautiful that we can come together. Right from the beginning, I felt the kirpa (grace) – all these things came together in a beautiful way. You couldn’t ask for more genuine engagement.” Outside the university, the larger community has also been onboard. Thus far, funds raised to support the program are just shy of $500,000 and the community continues to give. The team is eager to continue reaching out to the community and chat with anyone that wants to collaborate. Dr. Grewal encourages people all over the country to keep a watch, via social media platforms and in the community, on how they can get involved and provide feedback. Ultimately, the Sikh Studies program is an initiative that every Canadian – especially Sikh Canadians – should be immensely proud of. As the program continues to grow, the impact is beyond powerful. For future generations, this initiative creates an accessible space for having important conversations through actively engaging with knowledge and connecting with each other.

Alongside stunning art created from recyclables, Tavisha’s most recent hand-made effort includes hundreds of face masks that she made to raise funds for charitable organizations. Given that her organization’s key pillar is saving the environment, Tavisha mentions that one of the drivers behind making the masks was to deter people from using disposable masks, which leads to substantial waste that does not break down. Additionally, affordability was at top of mind for Tavisha, “I noticed that handmade

When it comes to deciding which charity or cause to focus on, Tavisha’s decision is solely dependent on need. When she just started out, Tavisha chose BC Children’s hospital after seeing her best friend donated hair for children with cancer. Upon researching deeper, she discovered a significant need of resources for those with disabilities and won the hearts of many by fundraising for a facility designed for the activities

of physically disabled children. Tavisha further learned of MakeA-Wish at school, through her teacher’s fundraising efforts. The BC Cancer Foundation spoke out to her due to compelling statistics she saw on social media. Finally, highly pressing issues such as last year’s Australian wildfire outbreak connected her to Red Cross. Her next big project will surround raising funds to help with the COVID-19 situation in India. Amidst leading such a noble organization and being a student, Tavisha admits that it does get hectic at times. Aside from her community involvement, she also prides herself on excelling as a competitive swimmer, “Sometimes, I’m up at 4:00am for practice and go through an entire day of school, followed
by another practice.” When she gets a chance, Tavisha enjoys winding down by catching up on some muchneeded sleep, playing with her dog, Teddy, and indulging in cooking some delicious stir-fry. However, despite such a busy schedule, Tavisha still manages to carve out time on the weekend for homework and house chores to help her parents. “Nothing would be possible without my parents; this is all just because of their support. I have always been very family-oriented, and my parents are my biggest inspiration,” emphasizes Tavisha. Evidently, Tavisha’s commitment and passion has not gone unnoticed. She has received an abundance of recognition from the community for her efforts, including appreciation from various charities, political leaders, and her school. a growing list of accomplishments. Tavisha’s heart is full of gratitude for the community’s support, which has been overwhelming. For her peers who would like to get involved, Tavisha points out that community involvement does not mean donating money or starting something from the ground up. It can also just equate to donating time by volunteering at the food bank, for example. Helping others does not always entail going too far. There are many nonprofit organizations locally – close to home – that are looking for volunteers. In terms of her future plans, Tavisha hopes to attend medical school and step foot in the field of gynecology or optometry. Throughout her journey, she will continue to work towards serving the community, with the main motive to save the environment. “The statistics on water quality, ocean quality, and air pollution are concerning. Since the surge in production and manufacturing, our climate has been going downhill. It is our responsibility to preserve what we have and make it better for future generations.” Undoubtedly, Tavisha is a testament to the wonders of sheer hard work, dedication, and, simply put, an undying love to do good and help others. Her ability to balance academics, a competitive swimming career and impactful community work is exemplary. Tavisha’s community involvement and accomplishments are a beacon of hope that the world is in caring hands, Tavisha’s Helping Hands.

“There is the idea of giving kids a mirror, but we also need to provide them with windows of other worlds they don’t know about. As Canadians, we share so much in common. One community’s struggle is everyone’s struggle and our freedoms are interconnected,” says teacher Harman Pandher.
T
hey say that teaching is the profession that teaches all other professions. Surrey school teacher, Harman Pandher, does just that and much more in his classroom. The Burnaby resident was recently recognized for his efforts in the 2021 B.C. Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Awards for building bridges between communities. Pandher was born in Vancouver and attended the University of British Columbia to become a teacher. With 20 years of experience under his belt, he now not only teaches all subjects to his Grade 5 class at Beaver Creek Elementary,
but also teaches Punjabi at his school. Alongside academics, Pandher’s mission is to promote diversity and multiculturalism to youth. He served on the Board of Directors of the Burnaby Multicultural Society, which, for many years, was the flagship organization for multicultural issues and the creation of cultural awareness. In addition, Pandher went on to co-found two organizations. Through SONG (Seeking Oneness for the Next Generation), a creative mentorship association, Pandher mentors youth by fostering their involvement in the arts. “At its core, SONG
HARMAN PANDHER TELLING UNTOLD STORIES By Mrinalini Sundar is about bringing youth together from diverse backgrounds and using their talent in the community for good causes,” says Pandher. Pandher then went on to launch SACH (South Asian Community Hub), which is a non-profit community organization providing integrated one-stop services for those impacted by alcohol and substance use, and mental health issues. Promoting the well-being of diverse communities in Surrey and around the province, the organization strives to fight systematic racism by breaking barriers around accessing services for underserved communities with racial barriers. Pandher further explains, “This is not just limited to the South Asian community. We are seeing this model achieve success for First Nations and other cultural communities as well. We just need to be culturally sensitive and speak to people in their language.” Outside of his work with various organizations, Pandher also writes – but not without cause. His latest project is a children’s picture book, Gurpreet Goes to Gurdwara: Understanding the Sikh Place of Worship, which portrays the story of a young boy who learns

more about his religion by a visit to the Gurdwara. Available in elementary schools around the Lower Mainland, Amazon and Chapters Indigo, the book serves as an anti-racist tool by filling the gap of readily available educational resources about minority communities. Pandher’s goal is more than just a good read, “The book is a great medium to reach children. While it covers my experience as a Sikh Canadian, it really is an introduction to Sikh traditions and the Gurdwara. Most importantly, it is a launching pad to conversations.” Stepping into teacher Pandher’s classroom, such conversations create the essence of his learning environment. Intending to broaden his students’ horizons, Pandher makes a conscious effort to bring in resources that are representative of the students he teaches, so that they get a sense of their identities in the books or videos they watch. “There is the idea of giving kids a mirror, but we also need to provide them with windows of other worlds they don’t know about. As Canadians, we share so much in common. One community’s struggle is everyone’s struggle and our freedoms are interconnected,” Pandher puts eloquently. Undoubtedly, teachers are not the only influencers in children’s lives; parents have an important role at home. Pressing on the importance of looking at our own biases, Pandher urges parents to question what they share at home with their children, “Little things like discouraging kids from playing with those outside their race are adding to the problem. It doesn’t have to be about racism – that’s just one form of discrimination. Maybe the problem lies in discriminating between boys and girls, known as sexism. We also talk about bullying, which may have homophobic roots, or may be based on class and caste. There is discrimination within the Sikh community, too. Sometimes, we are the victims, but sometimes, we are doing the discriminating.” No community is off the hook and the very basic level, we can help by not being bystanders. Advocacy and activism are powerful stepping stones towards the solution. In fact, youth are very passionate about becoming part of the solution and partaking in social causes. Pandher mentions that the younger generation are not afraid to speak out on whatever is available as a social platform – be it a volunteer organization or social media. Youth have been at the forefront of supporting the Farmer’s Protest in Punjab. Before that, youth in the South Asian Community supported the Black Lives Matter movement. They’ve even taken to streets to demonstrate things like climate change. “They’re involved and they’re really inspiring and motivating the older generation to also support causes outside

of our Gurdwaras. Gurdwaras are now at these demonstrations and fighting Asian hate, Black racism, and racism against First Nations people. It’s great to see Gurdwaras going beyond the walls of Gurdwaras and bringing langar to Downtown Vancouver. After all, Sikh religion is about social justice and fighting for equality,” elaborates Pandher. According to Pandher, we can take a reactive approach, where we hear about something and then react. However, the harder part is to find out what the root causes are, given that no one is born a racist. Rather, these seeds are planted at some point in one’s life. This is where the need arises to address issues like economic inequalities, resentment, and scapegoating different communities unfairly due to one’s own hardships. Pandher talks about combatting people’s desperation when they face a lack of opportunity, “Governments need to invest in more mental

health support, more social service report and education to help people in all communities. Our community is facing a homeless problem, which is not as widely discussed. These are universal problems that governments need to put funding forward for.” Pandher points out that the education system is also an integral focus and needs to have curriculums that are even more representative to foster cultural inclusion and acceptance. This is essential because the attitudes that children develop in elementary school stay with them. The key lies in being mindful at all times and not just during oneoff multicultural celebrations. Pandher shares an interesting perspective, “It’s great to have a Sikh Heritage Month, Asian Heritage Month or Black Awareness Month, but why are we doing it? It’s because we are playing catch up. We have been considered the other – outside the mainstream – when Canada is really one

We are all part of the Canadian story. Vaisakhi is just as much a Canadian celebration.” Factually speaking, Punjabi is the fifth-most common language in Canada and second-most common language in British Columbia. It is the most frequently reported immigrant language in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Evidently, there is a need to shift our thinking. The good news is that with teachers like Harman Pandher at the forefront, we are right on track towards that mind shift. Pandher’s community involvement is exemplary, and he is a role-model for the educators and even policymakers of our country. Building a more diverse, inclusive world starts right in our homes and classrooms. Pandher’s next book, slated for later this year, will be a children’s picture book about the Golden Temple. With each effort and with every new book, Pandher continues to turn a fresh, new page for our children, our youth.

My four-part series for Global News included a first-hand look at the migrant crisis with insight from Canadian volunteers on-theground in Lesvos [Greece], the stories of some of the refugees I spoke to and the so-called ‘life jacket graveyard’ in contrast with a real graveyard with the bodies of those who didn’t survive the crossing. Journalistically the experience was second-to-none.”

Different, when it’s safe to travel again after the pandemic is over. The young journalist believes that one of the most challenging parts of the job is access. “We always have questions for specific people in particular positions of power, the decision makers who can really answer to certain problems the public deserves accountability in relation to, but we are often unable to direct those questions to those individuals. During the COVID-19 crisis this access has been further limited because of the need to keep our colleagues and communities safe, less reporters are physically present at news conferences, many briefings are virtual and each

reporter who manages to get through to ask a question by phone is usually given one question and a follow up,” she explains. On the other hand, she claims that one of the most satisfying parts of the job is when our journalism effects change. “Whether it is money being raised for a grieving family in need of support or a charity championing an important cause as well as legislative changes to for example preventing and investigating money laundering in Canada and employees who were denied fair pay receiving the compensation they’re owed.” Last year, despite the challenges faced due to the COVID-19 crisis, Neetu states the pandemic taught her a lot about the importance of patience and being present. “Especially when the future is this uncertain, those tools are like a superpower. What I ‘hope’ the pandemic has highlighted is that we are all human, regardless of skin colour, ethnicity, class, religion, cultural background or identity, we are part of the same human race and a global community.”
The Global News reporter recently did an interesting piece on navigating name diversity and announced on-air her decision to say her name as per the authentic Punjabi pronunciation. Like many others, Neetu used the anglicized version since her childhood to fit it. But it created a lot of inner conflict within her until she decided it was time for her and people around to say her name the right way. The response to her decision has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. “It seems to have struck a chord with a number of people from a range of backgrounds and ethnicities. I’ve heard from educators all over the world who reached out to tell me they showed the video to their students and have been asking how their students want to be addressed,” she shares. Her colleagues and friends have been very encouraging and have taken the time to learn how to say her name correctly in their day-today personal interactions and on-air. “I have never felt more authentically myself in every facet of my life,” says Neetu, immensely proud of leading this change. Her advice to anyone going through the same internal conflict is “own your name, identity, heritage and story. Everyone’s situation and comfort level is unique but if this is something you truly are grappling with like I was and want to do, take the leap! I have never felt more in line with who I am as a person. I hope the level of support for this change and the number of people who have put in the effort to learn how to say my name correctly, is encouraging.” Talking about her heritage, Pentiction-raised Neetu was incredibly fortunate to grow up in a loving home and remain

She is incredibly inspired by her parents who immigrated to Canada from India, leaving behind their families, friends, education and home, to build new ones and start a family. “The sacrifices they’ve made for my siblings and I and the opportunities this has provided us, inspires me to work hard like I always saw them doing throughout my life.” She is motivated by the support and guidance she received throughout her life from her late grandmother, who she calls Bibi. “She was the strongest, most selfless, giving, kind and warm person. Even when I was a child, I recall thinking to myself how I knew I was living out the best days of my life at that time because Bibi was in them. I know I have a very special angel watching over me now,” expresses Neetu. Before concluding, Neetu shares her message to youth or those interested in following her path is: “Be unapologetic about your goals by being an undeniable fit for the newsroom/organization you want to work for and advocate for yourself and what you think is right. Mentors and role models are important but know your path is unique and own it. Lastly, know your “why”. What is at the core of why you want to go into this career path? What motivates and drives you? rom Canada to India - Brampton to Mumbai - Jonita Gandhi has come a long way. The 31-year-old singer started her career with Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express and since has crooned in eight regional Indian languages. She has worked with some of the top music composers in the country- AR Rahman to Meet Bros to name a few. The singer was recently in Canada when we caught up with her about her music, giving acting a shot, and social media. .
Q:
Looking at how it started to where you are now, how does it
feel when you go on a nostalgic route?
A:
It can be overwhelming! Although I know I have a lot further to go, it’s humbling to revisit the memories of the experiences I’ve had to get here. Whenever I come home to visit, visiting places I used to perform at regularly often makes me think of what life used to be like and what life could have possibly been if I hadn’t pursued music in India. I am so grateful and consider myself very lucky to be living my dreams.
Q:
Please tell us your experience working with some of the top
A:
composers in India. Who is your favourite? I can’t pick any one favourite because it’s a unique experience to work with each one. They all have their own workflow and each of their studios has its own vibe. I have learned something different about myself and about my singing while working with different music directors and I really appreciate that opportunity because it helps me to grow as an artist.

Coming from Canada, how did you think of heading to Bollywood?

It all happened so quickly and soon I was touring North America with Sonu Nigam and his band. That experience made me think seriously about giving a professional career as a singer a shot. With two degrees in hand and a solid backup plan to fall back on, I thought why not. Thankfully, I toured with Sonuji for the first few years while I was in India and simultaneously worked on making a name for myself.

Who do you aspire to work with when it comes to composers? Your
dream collaboration.
A:
There are so many people I would love to collaborate with, from music composers to singer-songwriters. It would be a dream come true to collaborate with artists like Jacob Collier, Timbaland, Charlie Puth, Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars, etc… they’re all so talented and the list really goes on and on!!!
Q:
A:
Of all the songs you have crooned, which is your favourite?
Kahaan Hoon Main. It was my first solo song in Bollywood and the process of recording that song taught me so much.
Q:
What are some of the challenges you faced when you started in
Bollywood?
A:
Most people would hear me speak before they heard me sing and assume that I couldn’t pronounce lyrics correctly because of my Canadian accent. This was a barrier for me at first.
Working with Rahman sir on stage and in the studio has taught me so much about myself as a singer, and about my voice. I’ve learned how to be less rigid about the rules when it comes to conforming to the genre of the song when delivering vocals in the studio. I get to experiment with different styles of singing within the same song, which I never thought was something I should do. I’ve learned that I could sing things that I didn’t think I could sing. I’ve been put on the spot many times and found out that I’m able to do things I didn’t know I could do.

Q:
Tell us a little about your music teachers who have guided you
throughout your life?
A:
Q:
You have sung in different languages, do you find
Q:
it hard to switch from one to another?
A:
Since I don’t speak any of the regional languages I sing in, I approach them all phonetically. Over time, of course, some words become familiar so it does get easier, but I’ve also developed a sort of legend that I use to help me know how to pronounce the sounds correctly when I’m learning new lyrics in any language.
Q:
Who is your inspiration when
it comes to music?
A:
Some of my first teachers were Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, without them knowing of course! Like most singers, I first started learning songs by listening to them. I’ve taken western classical vocal classes with the Ontario Conservatory of music, and again in University, but I never really formally trained in Indian classical vocals or had the guidance of a teacher along the way. I’ve learned something new from every artist and composer I’ve worked with along the way. That being said, I do consider Salim Merchant and AR Rahman to be mentors who have guided me through much of my musical career.
I draw inspiration from hard work and talent, so the answer changes almost daily as I hear new music and discover new talent. There are so many artists who inspire me, especially the ones who push boundaries and are versatile in their craft.
People have multiple times commented on social media that
you should start acting, have you thought
A:
about it? When I was a kid, I used to think I was going to be an actress, before I realized that being a singer was a thing I could do. (Haha). Given that my singing career is so jampacked, although I’ve considered the idea many times, I never took a step in that direction until an opportunity came my way. I’ve recently shot for an English-language film by a Tamil production house that’s scheduled to release on Netflix later this year. It was a very different experience, and an opportunity to learn something new.
Q:
A:
How important is social media for artists these days?
Social media is such a great tool for artists to reach audiences around the world. Building relationships with audiences has become a key strategy for artists not just for music consumption but also for brand collaborations, sponsorships, and endorsements which are also areas of an artist’s career that add value to their profiling. It’s a great way to share new music releases and other work as well.

‘S
tay Safe’ has become the norm in colloquial conversations with our loved ones. However, staying safe these days may not just in reference to the pandemic, but also general social safety in our cities. As the news of local shootings become increasingly prevalent, the average citizen cannot help, but wonder: When will these shootings come to an end? Member of Parliament Sukh Dhaliwal’s recent conversations with law enforcement officials suggest that it is very hard to determine when this wave of shootings will come to an end. “There is no single solution that is going to fix this massive problem, and there is no single level of government or individual community organization that can tackle the problem alone. Success can only be achieved through close and ongoing collaboration,” says Dhaliwal. Evidently, the responsibility falls upon all members of our communities – be it on an organizational or individual level. Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, acknowledges that Lower Mainland residents are concerned and fearful about the frequent shootings in public areas.
However, he maintains that multiple police agencies are coordinating their efforts and working full out on these investigations, “Our strategy to ending gun violence involves sustained and strategic prevention, intervention and enforcement efforts over several years, in order to enhance the safety of our neighbourhoods.”

Considering the facts, as per Sergeant Elenore Sturko, Surrey RCMP’s action plan to address regional gang activity targets individuals who pose the highest risk to public safety because of their action, affiliations, and involvement with gangs and drug trafficking in the province. “The Surrey RCMP Drug Unit works to cut off drug and cash supplies while the Police Mental Health Outreach Team provides referrals to appropriate support services for community members suffering from addictions,” comments Sturko.

Delta’s first South Asian Deputy Police Chief In fact, in March, the Firearm Violence Prevention Act was passed, addressing the enforcement gaps in existing federal provincial legislation, such as regulating imitation firearms that are currently unregulated. More recently, the opening of the new BC Provincial Forensic Firearms Laboratory was also announced, to help increase police capacity to analyze firearms used for criminal activity. While these policy changes and investments may help speed up the timeline of improvements, it is also essential to understand that guns alone are not the sole problem. Recent shootings are connected to organized crime connected to established gangs, most of which are primarily funded by dealing drugs.

CFSEU-BC provides province-wide coordination for organized crime, gang prevention and disruption and conducts operations in many jurisdictions that have a positive impact on the Lower Mainland gang problem. Since 2018, CFSEU-BC has interdicted 900 firearms and over 6,000 kg in illicit drugs seized and chemical precursors seized. past few years. “It seems as though the way to move up in these organizations is through these kinds of deadly acts that have little regard for innocent bystanders,” reveals Dhaliwal. From a policing perspective, Superintendent Sidhu emphasizes the importance of starting awareness young and showing our youth what the end results of gang lifestyles can look like. He adds that gangs now target vulnerable children in Grades 5-7, meaning that high school may be too late for education and awareness. As for parents, simply staying on top of where their children are and being in the loop on who they are with can go a long way. Sidhu details, “We see signs,

but we are not persistent enough or too scared to ask. Youth are more exposed to the world of social media. In such an interconnected world, it is becoming harder for parents to keep them protected.” Sergeant Sturko urges that this is not a problem that will be solved by police alone. If anyone from the community has information that can help or if suspicious activity is seen, citizens should call their local police. Often, evidence is the missing piece in charging a criminal, as no one is willing to come forward, which can be quite frustrating. Given the complexity of the gang problem, the shootings we hear of are not just something which we should talk about from the comfort of our homes. Asking the question of when this will be over is not enough. Being part of the answer is what matters. Criminal activities take place in our cities,

Anyone’s father, mother, friend or spouse is at risk when our parking lots are targeted as shooting sites. young girl was crying for help as her mother had to be admitted in a hospital, for, her oxygen levels dropped drastically. In the video, which was circulated all over Twitter, she mentioned that she had aged grandparents at home and no father to support. She would have been all of 18, but running around hospitals didn’t help. Eventually, she cried out for support on social media. Sivakumar Sridhar spent nearly seven hours to find a hospital for his 75-year-old uncle, whose oxygen levels dropped to 85. He had to pull some strings and eventually found a bed in a government hospital, as private hospitals wouldn’t admit him as they already have patients in queue. Such heart-breaking stories have now become common in India, as the second wave of coronavirus is wreaking havoc. Though all of us, including the country’s health minister Harsh Vardhan, declared that India was ‘in the endgame’ of the COVID pandemic, as vaccination had already begun in January, the second wave beat everyone to it, with the country announcing fresh lockdowns from April. Averaging three lakhs cases a day, the situation doesn’t seem to get any better. With vaccine shortage on the rise, drugs being sold in the black market, and people dying without oxygen supply, the devastating second wave of coronavirus in India caught the world’s attention for its health emergency.
The game of thrones ft. Modi One of the primary reasons for the spike in cases began when the country’s election commission announced elections in five states early this year. With election rallies and campaigning seeing thousands of people with no masks or no social distancing, the elections were a recipe for disaster. With cases and deaths rising day-afterday, a large section of the population is blaming Narendra Modi, or well, the Modi government, who did nothing about it. If this wasn’t all, the government also gave a nod to conduct a religious congregation like the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar, which again saw lakhs of people, following no safety protocol. With fresh news coming in that most people who attended the congregation testing positive for the virus, the situation seems to be getting worse. A lot of people who’ve actually suffered a loss in the families, too, have noted that their loved ones would have survived if they got oxygen or bed on time. Sources add that there were several projects that involved installing oxygen, which were still pending from the government. Just as dead bodies are piling up in crematoriums, situations in which the Modiled government failed, are also adding up. Even global media have criticized Modi for his lack of controlling a pandemic. Was he really prepared for the second wave? Did he work towards fixing up the gaps in the health care system when the country momentarily enjoyed a vacation early this year when the cases were low? While he has not addressed any of these allegations, we hear, the government is now speeding up things to make the situation better. And the first step to that was getting the vaccination drive, up-and-going for everyone above the age group of 18, from May 1.
Will people take responsibility? But would you blame it all on Modi for the second wave? Isn’t the pandemic affecting the entire world? Our tragedy is overwhelming because of the sheer size of the population, too. India is a country with the second largest population. How does one effectively manage

Despite announcing lockdowns, streets in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which clocks an average of 40,000 cases every day, are crowded with people. Respective state governments introduced paying a fine for not wearing a mask in public places. Though some people adhere to the rules strictly, there are few others, who still wear their mask below their nose. Just when the cases were coming down, cricket matches saw crowds gathering in the

stadium. Despite repeated announcements of sitting in between two chairs apart, people were grouped together and cheering for the country. Even as the cinema halls were opened, families who came to the theatres refused to sit apart. If people in the city are acting like this, villages across the country are flouting rules like nobody’s business. Most recently, the fishing festival held near Tirupatur, near Madurai, in Tamil Nadu, turned up in huge numbers for a traditional festival. Even though officials say that they have banned such events owing to the rising COVID cases, men and women across nearby villages came in troops, not adhering to any of the pandemic norms. No matter how celebrities or the government come forward to do a video on the importance of masking, or urge people to follow social distancing, people, here, live in their own world… a world in which they believe that coronavirus is a mere scam. waiting outside the hospitals for oxygen, and a constant reminder to wear a mask, should put some sense into them. A wisecrack once said that if you want to blame everyone; see yourself in the mirror first. And that holds true for many, here, in India.
Social media a boon or ban in this pandemic? “My uncle desperately needs oxygen. Pls help us to arrange oxygen cylinder,” read one Tweet. “Urgently need Remdasivir injection,” reads another. To some social media is a godsend - where they get an opportunity to crowdsource beds, oxygen, medicines, plasma, and ventilators. Messages on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram spread like wildfire which has indeed helped people during these desperate times. As someone rightly said, the beautiful part about social media is that you trust strangers. On the other hand, social media has become a place for trolls and spreading false news. Recently, it
The curve is slowly flattening in the state of Maharashtra, which saw maximum cases during the second wave. Is it good news, yet? No. Cases are steadily rising in other parts of the country. Perhaps another lockdown? While the privileged in us would want another nation-wide lockdown, those below poverty line cannot handle another shut down as they lose their daily wages. Countries worldwide are sending their supplies for India, and the government, too, is ramping things up. With the vaccination drive going in full swing and the majority of the population getting their first dose of vaccine, health experts suggest there will be a decline at least by the end of June. But this story can be valid only if we report actual numbers. Scientists, astrologers and godmen can always say a date for the pandemic to end, but those privileged citizens always have a way to stay at home and work and the rest can follow all standard operating procedure norms. The government, too, could rebuild and amp up things so that we don’t lose any more lives. We all thought 2020 was the worst, well, it seemed like that was just a trailer for the worst to happen, this year. Like always, we need to stay positive, stay safe and maskup.

hotos of vaccinated community members flood our social media feeds as people share their excitement on what seems to be a step closer towards a pre-pandemic world. As governments put a stop to social activities we previously took for granted, the question of finally returning back to the delicacies of ‘normal’ life lingers. Looking at our neighbors in the United States of America, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said that fully vaccinated

hospitalizations and deaths are expected to significantly drop as vaccinations increase, making it more likely that public health guidelines loosen and allow for larger gatherings. However, it is only after the second round of vaccinations that notable changes on restrictions for gatherings and travel will come about – more to the likeness of a pre-pandemic Canada. Until 80% of the eligible population gets both doses, masks and social distancing will be the norm. Also associated with the South Asian COVID Task Force, Dr. Madhu Jawanda details that as the vaccine roll-out accelerates and more people are getting vaccinated, along with the warmer weather, more outdoor activities will become sanctioned. Until we reach community immunity and are all safe, stadium sports and concerts are just not realistic. “I wish I had individuals are able to hold outdoor gatherings without the use of masks. However, Canada still stands on the cusp of just the first round of expectations. As such, can we really expect activities such as sports, playgrounds, concerts, and weddings to reopen, per say? Dr. Navdeep Grewal of the South Asian COVID Task Force suggests that we refrain from getting too eager, “After the first round of vaccinations, things won’t really change that much in terms of public health mandates because we are still not fully protected until 3-4 weeks after we’ve received our second dose. We will still have to wear masks indoors, in public places and continue to physically distance.” That said, she advises that the number of

a crystal ball and could predict when we can get together for large indoor/outdoor activities, but only time will tell,” says Jawanda. In fact, Dr. Grewal explains that even after everyone has been immunized with the second dose, there still remains the concern of decreased vaccine effectiveness against variants. As a result, it is possible that the CDC changes their guidelines and eventually requires booster doses, especially if hospitalization numbers start to increase again. For now, we know that all government-approved vaccines do prevent serious illness and death, even in variant cases. Dr. Jawanda emphasizes the importance of ensuring that we minimize the community spread of the virus to prevent creating a situation which will lead to further illnesses, closures and COVID variants. This begs the question, then, if the new normal is here to stay and what the timeline

As per Global leader in market research, Ipsos, only 1 in 4 Canadians believe that life will return to normal this year. Dr. Grewal’s opinion on the matter is that the pre-pandemic normal will occur only once this virus spread is finally under control – once it becomes more like a common cold, and less like the currently unpredictably serious illness it can be. This may take several months to another year to occur. Dr. Jawanda outlines an interesting perspective, “The new normal is here to stay until we have control of the virus. Right now, the virus has control of us to a certain extent. I think we will see normalcy in early 2022 in Canada.” After we have the virus under control, good habits will hopefully come out of our experience with the pandemic, namely wearing masks in public when feeling unwell, or

staying home when sick, and washing hands before eating food or touching the eyes. Dr. Jawanda urges the public to also consider the fact that this is a global concern, not just a local or national one. Although we may be relatively normal, the rest of the world needs to be vaccinated in order to prevent creation of variants and ongoing spread. This virus knows no borders, boundaries, race or religion. We need to mobilize collectively in a humanitarian effort to combat COVID. Despite any positive advances we make, we are far from becoming completely carefree when it comes to COVID-19. Dr. Grewal shares an important message, “We are inching closer to the end of the pandemic and our ability to live, work and travel as we please. However, we should remain

vigilant as future pandemics could occur, but at least we will have learned what worked and didn’t work.” Hopefully, if such a situation arises, we can use our knowledge to globally work together, share technology and vaccines, and provide equitable help all around the world. To help us all get vaccinated faster, Dr. Jawanda suggests that communities help elders, friends, and family with the process. Canadians can help each other by registering themselves for the COVID vaccine through the government website or the phone line provided by the government. As per the BC Centre for Disease Control, vaccines save lives by protecting the people that get vaccinated and those around them. The more people in a community who are vaccinated and therefore protected from COVID-19, the harder it is for it to spread, taking us one step closer to a normal life as we know it to be before the pandemic.

It was not an easy life,” remembers Randy. What kept him going were the values passed down by his parents. “The core values are - to work hard, be honest, put in long hours, and make a living for yourself. Speak the mother tongue at home
Speaking your mother tongue at home is the easiest and most effective way to get your children started on their language journey. Children tend to pick up words and vocabulary, and the younger they are, the easier it is for them. Start with simple instructions and action words such as “eat your food”, “wear your clothes” or “turn on the lights.” Slowly, they will be able to transition into more advanced conversational phrases and sentences.

eaching your children their mother language is something every parent aspires to achieve, a feat easier said than done. As parents, it can oftentimes be challenging to maintain a home language when English is so dominant in our lives today, especially while living in a foreign country, such as Canada or the USA. However, at the same time, being bilingual has countless intellectual and social benefits for children, other than just the enhanced communication aspect. According to research, knowing

more than one language boosts a child’s critical thinking and problem solving skills, along with increasing their creativity, memory, and concentration. To help your child learn their mother language, and profit from all the benefits that come along with being bilingual, here are a few tips for parents:
DARPAN
TM
Make a routine to teach the language
It can be tough to get young children to concentrate for long periods of time. Therefore, make a simple routine when it comes to teaching the language. For example, incorporate “10 minutes of writing the alphabet” once your children are finished with their homework, or before they go to bed. Learning tools, such as flashcards or simple games, are also very effective when it comes to teaching the basics of any language.
3
Read them stories
Stories are the best way to capture any child’s interest and attention. So, get some books in your mother language and read them to your child daily. Test their comprehension by asking them questions about the story, or what certain words/phrases mean. If they are comfortable with reading, encourage them to practice that skill as well.
4
Teach them rhymes and poems
5
Watch movies and shows

Find simple rhymes and poems in your mother language, and teach them to your child. It’s a great way to get them to memorize words. You could also discuss what the rhyme or poem means.
Watching TV shows and movies is a great way to build fluency in a language. Watching a movie or a show in your mother language with your child is a great way to spend some quality time together, while presenting them with a valuable learning experience. Once the show or movie is over, ask them how much of it they could understand.
When teaching your child any language, whether that is English or your mother tongue, the most important thing to remember is to be patient. All children are different, and learn at different paces, so do not rush them. Make language learning fun and something they look forward to, rather than dread. Just take it one step at a time, and before you know it, your child will be having fluent conversations with you!

Hello, Living Room Choose a colour scheme that will be perfect for the living room. Our go-to colours are always blue and white - from blue cushions, rugs curtains, vases, and cutlery. Add some green to your room too - leafy plants and succulents will lift the mood of the house.
Flowy curtains
Keep up the beachy vibes
Be it outdoor living or just uplifting the feel of your house - hanging flowy curtains can certainly give the house an airy and more relaxed feeling. A lot of it also depends on the kind of curtains you choose for the house - we like the plain white ones which has self motif patterns. If you are looking for something more colourful, choose kalamkari patterns and designs. You can also choose colourful cotton curtains that can make the house light and breezy.
Choose any corner in the house and give it a beachy twist with a jute rug, grey painted walls, woven wall hangings, and a comfortable beachy seating - this will be that perfect spot in the house with summer vibes. You can also add to this corner some cane magic with lamps and light fixtures which will add a lot of summery vibes.

Animal prints are the best For all those who want to give the room a whacky and cool look, try adding more animal prints - zebra stripes, leopard prints, and tiger stripes add a lot of zing to the room. Dainty and luxury pieces with a mix of animal prints can bring a lot of fresh perspectives to your otherwise dull room.

oing into the warmer seasons, the days become longer and brighter. With warmer temperatures, we tend to lighten up on everything from the types of foods we eat to the clothes we wear to our bedlinens and even room décor. So, it makes sense that our beauty routines should also adjust to the change in seasons—specifically how much foundation we wear. Or whether we should wear it at all.

“Adapting to seasonal weather changes may make us evaluate how much foundation to wear, or how to wear it. We may decide to wear less or wear it differently,” says Melanie Hutchinson National Education Manager, IT Cosmetics Canada. For Janice James, Field Executive Training Manager for Estée Lauder, she personally stays with her foundation routine but ramps up the sun protection. TM
“Adapting to seasonal weather changes may make us evaluate how much foundation to wear, or how to wear it. We may decide to wear less or wear it differently,” says Melanie Hutchinson, National Education Manager, IT Cosmetics Canada. “I’m definitely someone who wears foundation in the summer and I’m also really big on the SPF thing as well. I feel like foundation is that extra layer of protection in addition to the SPF,” she says. But for those who really would rather lighten up on the makeup look and feel for summer, Maddox Lu, Benefit Cosmetics’ Senior National Education Manager and National Trend Artist, says that concealer is the “secret weapon” for achieving a polished result. “Truly why you wear complexion products is to hide those booboos that you don’t want people to see but that’s not necessarily all over the skin,” Lu explains. “It could be redness around the nose. It’s hereditary dark circles around the eyes, scars and marks. That’s why concealer is a great way to go because you only apply it where you need it. You still show real skin.” David Vincent, national makeup artist for Lise Watier, says that often skin issues brought on by colder winter weather disappear in the warmer months and skin often appears healthier, making people more confident with less coverage.

“For summer it’s all about the texture,” Vincent states. “You want something comfortable. You want something that will give you a feel that is light, and your skin can breathe.” To create a lighter texture with your foundation, Hutchison suggests mixing foundation with face moisturizer for sheer coverage. You can decide how sheer by how much moisturizer you add into the mix. Or use a damp beauty sponge or makeup brush with half the amount of foundation normally worn to create a thinner texture to make the skin appear more natural. Another option Hutchison say is to “transition to a powder foundation and customize for a sheer-full coverage with a beauty sponge, or makeup brush.” James says for those committed to wearing foundation in the summer, Estée Lauder’s Doublewear is formulated to take on hot weather conditions as it is oil free, oil absorbing, oil controlling, sweat proof,

humidity proof and provides 24-hour-wear. “This one literally doesn’t come off until you take it off,” James states. “If you’re worried about your makeup melting into your skin, this is a really good choice.” For those who find that a concealer isn’t enough, or foundation is too much, a CC Cream may be a good option. It provides coverage for imperfections that you want to minimize or conceal and blends out well with the rest of the skin. Vincent says the Lise Watier CC Cream is his go-to because of the broad range of colours. A multipurpose formulation, it has an SPF 25 and Vincent says, even when used sparingly over the face, the pigment will adapt to the person’s own skin tone to ensure the overall look of the skin appears even. IT Cosmetics’s Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream, which performs much like a foundation, provides medium coverage with
high protection of SPF 50. Whether one opts for minimal coverage or full foundation, the experts agree that skin should be prepped with a moisturizer and SPF. Even if other products like CCs have SPF, James insists that those products aren’t applied as thoroughly as you would a sunscreen cream. And it’s important to use one specially formulated for the face, like Estée Lauder’s Protectionist Pro SPF, to facilitate the application of other products. For those wanting to eliminate a step, Estée Lauder’s Original DayWear with SPF 25 provides both protection and hydration. “SPF should go on first [before makeup],” advises Lu. “You want to put it everywhere, on every inch of skin that is exposed to the sun.” James agrees but says that you can also dab on sunscreen throughout the day where you feel the sun is most affecting your skin. Primer is another important step before makeup application, and for many brands, it’s been created to be a multi-benefit product. Benefit’s new Pore Professional Hydrate Primer is a skin smoothing, pore and line minimizing balm with hyaluronic acid, says Lu. Lise Watier’s Oh My Grip primer is a four-in-one product that extends your makeup for up to 16 hours, says Vincent. Formulated with hyaluronic acid, it hydrates and smooths skin. Vincent adds that it provides a lift or tightening effect when applied. The key is to let everything set on the skin before moving onto the next step. So when you put on your moisturizer, wait a couple of minutes and to let it soak in, says James. Then follow with the SPF, allowing it also to set into the skin before applying your makeup. As the beauty industry

www.darpanmagazine.com continues to bring innovative products to the marketplace, it also upgrades existing products increasing their efficacy and injecting new benefits into formulations. Going into this summer season sees setting sprays, which extend your makeup wear through heat, humidity and perspiration, reflect that trend. Benefit created the Pore Professional Super Setter which Lu says also blurs skin texture. Something he believes is unheard of to date for a setting spray. Lu says people are also using the setting spray to set their skin care “because once you spray it on it creates a protective barrier. So external environment stressors and things like that won’t come in contact with all the benefits that you’re soaking up from your skin care.” Vincent adds that a setting spray can be used under the makeup like a primer. “Sometimes I spray my brushes or sponges with Magnifix setting spray. It mixes with the formula of the foundation or the [CC] cream and adds some binder to the formula to make it even more long lasting,” he says. Hutchison says that setting sprays when formulated with beneficial ingredients like hyaluronic acid and coconut water in IT’s Your Skin But Better Setting Spray can be a great onthe-go refresher for throughout the day. Bronzers and powders, lightly applied, can help with combating the effects of oiliness and sweat. “You can go with a mattifying powder at least for the T-zone or a little bit under the eyes or around the nose,” suggests Vincent. The approach to bronzer has changed, says Lu. Rather than the tanned, or heavily contour look, it’s all about a healthy glow. “Bronzers just equal looking healthy. So, when your skin is a little bit sun kissed, your dark spots look a little less visible. Your dark circles are a little less visible. Discolouration is evened out. It’s that feel good, look good, natural beauty approach to makeup,” Lu observes. A natural approach to beauty is a good fit for the summer season when warm weather signals relaxation for many of us. Perhaps taking a relaxed approach to one’s makeup will be what will make us most comfortable. Remember you wear the makeup. Don’t let it wear you.

CAN WE IMPROVE OUR HEALTH BY DOING LESS? BY ASMA KASSAM

s It possible, we would experience more success in our health by adopting a season where we do less. Hear me out. I’ve put down a few reasons to help create logic in proposing how I think we could benefit from less doing. Firstly, in order to use the term less, you need your own frame of reference. Your frame of reference is unique to you. You are the best judge for what you need in your life, and sometimes we get to do things that

FITNESS
are a little out of our comfort zone to make small shifts that lead to small wins. Before we get into the juice, let’s preface with, these proposals may not resonate for you. I do hope there is one small takeaway that will help you, on your health journey. Here goes! We are a society of do-ers. While this drives our society forward, we want to remember that our body has a limited energetic capacity. Visualize a pot or a tank. This pot or tank is yours, and it holds all the energy your body has.Visualize your name on this tank “_____ (your name)’s energetic capacity.” Your body has one energy tank. This tank is used for physical, mental, and emotional functions. Under the umbrella of physical demands is also physiological processes - like digestion, fat-burning, hormone production, detoxification, skin repair, etc. Mental and emotional functions of the body are more self-explanatory The tank of energy is not bottomless, and it can be emptied out if not refuelled. Now keeping this energy tank in your mind, let’s talk about doing less, and how it could potentially help us with our health. Also, while reading, keep in mind, health is wealth. Health is energy. Health is vitality. Health is freedom of movement. Now let’s move forward. One of our human gifts is our ability to focus. Focus is a process that requires the brain to process and direct attention to a particular task. Many hours of focus, means our brain is constantly stimulated to process information. This mental focus is mileage and will consume energy from the tank. What if we were to adopt some measures that saved some energy? Would this leave us with some extra mental capacity? Perhaps that
Visit the Website:
mental capacity can be directed toward clearer communication, which would in turn prevent stress and frustration that we potentially experience from miscommunication. All our relationships require energy. Can you think of a time when you didn’t have mental capacity for a certain situation? Did it lead to stress? For myself, the answer is Yes and Yes. Furthermore, the feelings of stress and frustration lead to chemical and hormonal releases, which we will talk about next. The next way I feel we could benefit by doing less is perhaps incorporating variety in our exercise intensity. Hear me out. Exercise is a form of stress on the body. I’m not suggesting to not exercise, but I am proposing creating perhaps space to experiment with less exercise intensity and perhaps a longer duration stretch. This is like winning a little energy jackpot. 500 points please! Not only are we reducing the oxidative stress on the body, we are also filling energy back into the vessel via stretching, breathwork, or other nourishing, therapeutic practices. Stretching and breathwork are great for opening any blocked energy pathways in our body as they allow the nervous system to down regulate. This offers the body - space for healing and regeneration. So, most likely by now you have recognized that my proposal of doing less, is based around the concept of creating space in the mind and body. Positioning it as “less” actually needs to be revisited because we are actually being more conscious about our health from a birds eye view, which may be slightly different than what we have been taught. I hope this has inspired you in some way to approach your health in a way that feels better for this season of your life. Thank you for indulging with me on this topic!

t Indian weddings, the bridal attire is undoubtedly associated with glamour and flamboyance; the sole objective of this dreamy outfit is to make every head turn towards the bride as she enters the room. However, it often becomes an arduous task for the bride to actually enjoy her big day decked up in the usually heavy ensemble. Keeping this in mind, JADE by Monica & Karishma — a renowned fashion brand that over the years has redefined the bridal couture in India with its avant-garde and ethereal designs, has come up with their latest bridal collection — A Summer Memoir. With masterfully hand-crafted gorgeous pieces that primarily pay attention to comfort, functionality and ease of movement, without compromising on the glamour quotient – A Summer Memoir is indeed a perfect wardrobe for the millennial bride. “For bridal-wear, it’s quite light, breezy and unconventional in terms of silhouettes and colours. But at the same time, the glam quotient is maintained to suit Indian wedding sensibilities. We have used one of a kind handcrafted technique to create intricately detailed organza pieces. I think the fact that these pieces are versatile and a fresh break from the usual, is what makes the collection stand out,” says couturier Monica Shah of the label JADE by Monica & Karishma. Comprising of a series of mesmerizing lehengas, gowns, dresses and more — the collection explores the bond the bride shares with her near and dear ones. For the designer duo — Monica Shah and Karishma Swali, the intricate detailing on the outfits represents the complex emotions the bride holds in her heart. Commenting about the idea behind the collection, Monica says, “In many ways, our own experiences from witnessing and being a part of our favourite cousin’s or a best friend’s wedding have shaped this collection. Through these handcrafted ensembles, we explore the emotions, the precious little moments and the bonds the bride shares with her closest ones.” She further adds, “For us, bridal ensembles are not just garments, but companions and storytellers. They carry memories of perhaps the most special time in our lives. And we hope that these pieces do the same for bridal and bridal parties everywhere.”

“With every creation, Karishma and I seek to celebrate not just India’s artisanal excellence, but also the beauty and spirit of femininity. Every JADE ensemble is the celebration of a woman’s individuality. Their feminist spirit is at the heart of all that we do,” says co-designer Monica Shah. Inspired by and crafted for intimate weddings, the surreal collection beautifully celebrates the many emotions and facets of a bride. “We wanted to create these light, ethereal pieces that not only suited the occasion but also put the bride at ease, and allowed her to completely revel in the moments without being held back by ensembles that feels heavy and restrictive,” explains the co-designer. A beautiful confluence of traditional and contemporary, A Summer Memoir also stands out because of its refreshing and unique colour palette. “We have used very summery, spring garden-inspired colours such as Aegean Blue, Moss Green, Ivory White, Fuchsia Pink, Dusty Rose, Soft Beige. The palette is unique and takes a break from what we see traditionally. Because these are unique times, and the brides of today are very unique and individualistic. So, a diverse palette offers something for every personality, every feeling and every occasion,” says Monica. Ever since its inception in 2008, the label JADE by Monica & Karishma has strived to give its brides an experience like never before. JADE is the fruit of Monica and Karishma’s creative expressions, their passion for craft and their love for design. Combining their global expertise with their traditional roots, the designer duo has given a unique identity to the brand. “JADE is believed to be not just a custodian of Indian culture, but also a connoisseur of Indian crafts and craftsmanship. series in a consistent, meaningful way.” I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: utility vehicles shouldn’t be called coupes. I mean sure: the GLE does have the extremely short overhangs, the huge 22-inch wheels, the raked roof. However, there are also the five doors, oversized proportions and offroad pretensions. Perhaps it’s time the industry came up with a new descriptor? But I digress.
DARPAN

AMG-specific design elements include the polished verticallyslatted grille, massive jet-engineinspired front bumper air intakes, black lower body cladding all around and a significant rear diffuser wrapped around quad rectangular tailpipes. Inside, occupants will find a unique three spoke nappa leather steering wheel and aluminum paddles, matching upholstered seating and exclusive badging throughout the space. At night, highly customizable ambient lighting bathes the cabin in a soft-coloured glow. The MercedesBenz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system is standard, and is programmed here to display performance data like g-forces, lap times and engine fluid temperature.
The 63 S’ powertrain is a special one. A monstrous hand-built 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 propels the near 2,500-kilogram vehicle, pushing 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Mounted between the two is the aforementioned EQ Boost, a small electric motor responsible for a variety of functions like running the air conditioner compressor, allowing limited zero-emissions coasting, smoothing out the auto stop-start functionality and providing an additional 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque under high-throttle scenarios. Needless to say the SUV is no slouch. The official 0 to 100 km/h figure is 3.8 seconds and top speed is rated at 280 km/h. The 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is rear-biased, and possesses variable torque distribution to imperceptibly support a slipping wheel in inclement weather or loose surfaces. Further assisting in gaining traction quickly is an electronically-controlled locking differential at the rear axle. Due to a feature called ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilization, the GLE isn’t too bad at negotiating turns, either. Powered by EQ Boost and comprised of two independent electromechanical actuators mounted on each of the axles, they counteract dreaded body roll even at high speeds, capable of responding to driving inputs and the current environment within milliseconds. When travelling in a straight line, the tech can balance out one-sided bumps.

slick roadway with some loose gravel, the computer can detect which wheels are unloaded and cause them to brake, thus sending torque to the ones that are gripping the ground. As all contemporary Mazdas do, the CX-30 Turbo has G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC+) equipped. Though not something the average driver would notice, it means this technology designed to be subtle is doing its job. Basically, whenever entering a turn GCV adjusts power output slightly to cause a shift of weight to the front axle to make
cornering feel more natural. The + throws in light braking to the outer wheels coming out of the turn for increased stability. Since the optional engine upgrade is the focal point for the 2021 offering, exterior enhancements are kept to a minimum. And that’s just fine as the CX-30 is already quite the looker boasting a 3-D black mesh grille with metallic surround, low slung silhouette and black underbody cladding adding a touch of ruggedness. The Turbo’d variants include larger diameter tailpipes, 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels and door mirror caps, and special badging on the tailgate. The interior is a classy affair as well – occupants enjoy leather seating, 10-way adjustable driver seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, frameless rearview mirror, Bose 12-speaker stereo and 8.8-inch central display. There’s not really anything bad to say other than the single rotary Commander Knob remains slightly annoying when changing radio stations, and though it’s technically classified as an SUV, cargo volume is only rated at 572 and 1,280 behind the second and first rows, respectively. Still, as a daily driver and even acting as a sole vehicle in the household, the 2021 CX-30 Turbo would be a great choice for most.

Gone is the signature tiger nose grille, replaced by what the manufacturer calls the tiger face, which, somewhat confusingly, is a sharkskin-inspired mesh grill extending well beyond the anterior edge of the headlamp housings. The aggressive update complements the GT car’s long and lean fastback profile — the 4,905 millimetres overall length is in excess of 50 millimetres more than the outgoing Optima. front fender. Optional 19-inch alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P-Zero rubber, divided light bar connecting the LED tail lamps and a coat of Wolf Grey paint finish off the unique exterior look on our GT-Line loaner. The interior has no shortage of interesting design choices as well. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a T-handle shift knob, especially in this segment. Kia’s positioning as a value brand is made evident via the analogue vs. digital gauges, simulated wood dash trim and absence of steering wheel paddle shifters. Not so much a complaint but rather an observation, as the instrument panel and cabin in
general look great. There’s nothing budget about the tech, however. The available 10.25-inch infotainment monitor has a split-screen function to display two apps side-byside, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now allow cordless operation. Feeling stressed out from sitting in traffic? Users can turn on “Sounds of Nature,” providing soothing background noise like waves crashing on a beach or gentle rain falling. A benefit of having such a lengthy body is increased cargo capacity. After folding down the 60/40 rear seats, I was able to slide an entire crib inside. Were it not for the frame of the trunk intruding into the space, even larger items would no doubt fit. The K5 offers the choice between two turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains: a 2.5-litre (exclusive to the GT) or the 1.6-litre we tested sending 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft torque to all four wheels, and mated to an eightspeed automatic transmission. I was actually a little surprised that I’d be able to hear any sort of feedback from the small displacement motor, but engineers have included an Active Sound Design feature —love it or hate it — producing artificially enhanced noise through the Bose stereo speakers. The output is smooth and linear and the vehicle is just really pleasant to drive. The 2021 Kia K5 is built in West Point, Georgia and starts at $29.595.

On the subject of hauling, a factory-fitted Class IV weight distribution hitch, seven-pin wiring harness and Trailer Sway Control Technology iare standard. The Tacoma is rated to tow up to nearly 3,000 kilograms. Styling-wise the exterior may not be as fresh as it once was, however the vehicle doesn’t look too dated compared to other market competitors thanks to the ahead-of-its-time design. For example, the smoothly sculpted body panels and bumpers, protruding grille, flared wheel arches and available LED head and foglamps. Loading and unloading the pickup couldn’t be easier. The Easy Lower & Lift Tailgate can open and close using just finger pressure (no more slamming!) and the composite bed is made out of a fibrereinforced, sheet-moulded material that Toyota says is dent and corrosion resistant, and has a greater impact strength than steel. Indeed, I loaded some bicycles and outdoor gear for an afternoon of fun and not a scratch was seen afterwards. The interior is quite nicely equipped for the segment: a seven-inch (upgradable to eight-inch) Display Audio infotainment touchscreen sits in the middle of the dashboard, and is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible via plugging in a USB cable. The front seats are heated, and a sliding rear window is a blessing for getting some air circulation especially in the summer months. Our vehicle’s particular configuration, which was the four-door Double Cab new-for-2021 Nightshade edition with a short five-foot cargo bed (two-door Access Cab and a six-foot bed is also offered on different grades) had some extra goodies including blacked out details, premium JBL stereo, 360-degree camera and leather seating. While a fourth-generation Tacoma isn’t likely to be announced for another year or two, the 2021 version continues to deliver the goods, whether you intend to use it on the job, out on the trails, or preferably, both.

The film, executive produced by fourtime Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, is a drama set in the world of Indian classical music. people take notice.” Cuarón also provided feedback at the scripting and editing stages and recommended the cinematographer Michal Sobocinski to Chaitanya. Based on his success in the festival circuit and in Netflix, one could argue Chaitanya has made the most of his time during the pandemic, but working on something new has been challenging: “You can’t do research, you can’t go out, you can’t absorb the world, which is my source of raw material. I’ve found myself losing motivation up because of the carnage unfolding in India right now. So much
Do you see any parallels between Sharad’s path and your own career as a filmmaker? Absolutely. This film comes from a very personal space. The nightmare of not being good enough haunts me because I’ve made certain choices in my life. I’ve made sacrifices, while not anywhere close to the rigor and discipline of Sharad. Telling yourself a story only to find out that story doesn’t have much ground is a scary thought for me.
The film has a climatic flashback that pits a disparaging music critic against an unwavering Sharad. Which character’s worldview is closer to yours? It’s a mix of both. An artist has to be a romantic and an optimist and has to indulge in the excesses of the art form to be able to create. At the same time, you can’t be delusional, you’ve to be objective and strive for the truth. I should say Sharad has a bit of the critic in him and viceversa. People are nuanced, not binary.
What do you think Westerners get wrong about classical Indian music? Music is a language and there are people that are apathetic or resistant to the idea of being exposed to a new language or art form. Also, certain Western audiences have an idea of India in their mind and the story of an Indian musician wrestling with self-actualization feels an alien concept. By large, those who are more open, curious and tolerant have found themselves immerse in a whole new universe of stories, nuances, contradictions and complexities that are very specific to the Indian milieu, and have found great value in drawing parallels and comparison with their own musical tradition and their society in general.

Directed by: Reema Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi Staring: Sonakshi Sinha, Vijay Varma, Gulshan Devaiah Cop based drama is the trending flavour of the season in the OTT world and joining the bandwagon is — Fallen, which also happens to be versatile actress Sonakshi Sinha’s digital debut. What makes this series exciting is the fact that it will be showcasing the Dabangg actress in a neverseen-before avatar and is supposedly based on a real story. According to the sources, the story is based on the real-life story of a south Indian man, involved in wedding fraud, where he conned several young widows into matrimony and swindled their money and gold. Sonakshi will be playing the role of a fierce cop name Anjali Bhaati alongside Gulshan Devaiah, who is also playing a policeman in the show. Talking about the series, Gulshan said, “It’s a crime thriller surrounding a bunch of cops from interior Rajasthan. I finally fulfil my childhood fantasy of playing an onscreen cop.” Director Reema Kagti said in a statement, “Sonakshi is an actor with the ability to seamlessly fit into every character she plays. She plays a tough cop in the series, and it is a delight to see her sink her teeth into the skin of the character. I’m excited to collaborate with Amazon Prime Video once again and truly looking forward to bringing this show to audiences across the world.” Bingewatch alert for this one as well.
Rudra – The Edge Of Darkness Directed by: Rajesh Mapuskar Staring: Ajay Devgn Another big-screen star making his OTT debut is none other than the action king — Ajay Devgn and naturally, we are quite excited. Directed by National Film Award winner — Rajesh Mapuskar, Rudra- The Edge of Darkness is the Hindi remake of the hit British series Luther and features Ajay Devgn in the lead. Commenting about the series, Ajay said in a statement, “My attempt has always been to tell unique stories and work with good talent. The idea is to raise the bar of entertainment in India. The digital world excites me, and I am looking forward to working with Applause and BBC to bring this series to life on Disney+ Hotstar VIP. Rudra - The Edge of Darkness is a compelling and highly intriguing story and I can’t wait to begin this new journey. Playing a cop on screen is not new to me, but this time the character is more intense, complex and dark. What drew me most to his persona, is that he is possibly the greyest character you may come across in recent times.” Now that does sound intriguing. Can’t wait for Rudra to take over our home screen!

Another challenge was converting or getting recognition for our education as per Canadian credentials. It took a few months to get the Canadian equivalent license to be eligible for the required job and before applying for the same. Till then, we were exhausting our savings.
How long did it take to get used to the people, weather or surrounding? Having the experience of travelling to other countries and seeing different cultures, it wasn’t difficult for us to adjust or get used to the weather, surrounding or people.
How was your experience getting a job here? Harpreet: Once I got the equivalent Canadian license in engineering and my wife did a dental receptionist course, it was not very difficult finding a job.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada?
Why did you decide to migrate to Canada? We wanted to have a stable life. Both of us being in travelling professions, it was difficult to give enough time to our children. With our qualification and experience, Canada was a good option to give our kids a good life and future.
Which year did you migrate? We came to Canada in 2015 with our PR but went back to wind up a

We rented a basement in Surrey with the help of a relative before we came to BC. We didn’t want to be dependent on anyone though they offered us to stay with them.
What challenges did you face when you and your family moved here? Commuting with kids was the first hurdle we faced whenever we had to go somewhere like to a park, library or even a grocery store.

and makes them more accepting. There are many institutions, like schools, DIVERSEcity and libraries, which provide free knowledge and guide you through many difficulties a newcomer might face. My wife being a Library Champion got to know and spread the knowledge about the other services and resources a library can provide such as free skill-improving certified online courses, ESL course, English classes and conversation groups, and resume writing course. These can be of real help when immigrants are building a life in a new country. Dislike: The Canadian education system doesn’t accept foreign education/qualification, thus getting a job here is a very long and tiring process.
The biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada? Besides finding a job, we had to think about who is going to look after the kids if both of us wanted to work as we both are ambitious. We looked for daycares but they were expensive. With two kids it was sensible for one of us to stay at home and grow gradually. Also, when you are new with no credit history, you have to defer buying necessary items through the banks.
Any advice for future immigrants?
