Count on us when it comes to dealing with ICBC My wife and I were recently clients of Perminder Tung in our ICBC claim case. Perminder was very professional, friendly, and upfront with us. He kept us in the loop with his negotiations with ICBC and assured us that he will do the best he can to make sure we get what we deserve. In the end, Perminder was able to settle for an amount that was beyond what we thought we would get. My wife and I are very satisfied with Perminder's work and highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a great and honest lawyer.”

Beyond the festivities, the theme also revolves around exceptional individuals who are inspiring others and making the South Asian community proud. Inside, you will find glimpses of the event along with entertaining tidbits and images of the night that was. The Awards would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of our well-wishers, readers and the South Asian community. This issue we put the spotlight on youth passionate about sports – BC Tigers Hurricanes and Jasneet Nijjar. Surrey BC Tigers Hurricanes team recently won the 2018 Canada Soccer Toyota National Championships Challenge Trophy, awarded to the best premier soccer team in the country. Read the article to meet this talented team and know all about the championship win. Sprinter Jasneet Nijjar is a highly accomplished and driven young athlete who is Canadian Junior national champion at the 200m. At the 2018 BC high school track and field championships in June, Jasneet won the girls 100m, 200m and 400m sprints for a rare triple crown. DARPAN’S 1 Did you expect victory in the 2018

municipal elections?

I was certainly optimistic of our chances of success throughout the campaign. Our Achieving for Delta slate put forward an ambitious plan for the future of Delta and we were honoured by the amazing show of support we received from the community. Along with winning the mayoral race, we had four of our six Council candidates elected and three of our four school board trustee candidates elected. I was truly humbled by the faith the people of Delta placed in me, our team, and our vision for this community. I look forward to delivering on those promises over the next four years.

7 Housing affordability is also a concern in Delta. How will you tackle the issue?

2 What is the top priority on your agenda for the City of Delta right now?

Without question, my number one priority for the City of Delta is to advocate for the muchneeded replacement of the aging and seismically unsafe George Massey Tunnel. The traffic bottleneck at the Massey Tunnel is the worst in all of BC – and the safety concerns are also top of mind for me. Delta residents deserve a safe and reliable commute to work. Since my election as Mayor, I have spoken with the Transportation Minister as well as Premier Horgan. I look forward to working with the provincial government to deliver a safe and reliable new bridge for Delta residents, fully equipped with dedicated HOV lanes, bike lanes, and the capacity for future light rail expansion.

GEORGE V. HARVIE MAYOR, CITY OF DELTA

My number one priority for the City of Delta is to advocate for the muchneeded replacement of the aging and seismically unsafe George Massey Tunnel. The traffic bottleneck at the Massey Tunnel is the worst in all of

3 What is your plan for fixing the George Massey tunnel?

We must develop a strong working relationship with our provincial representatives and impress upon them the importance of moving forward with this project. Further, we need to earn the buy-in of other Mayors and Councillors South of the Fraser. I think our entire South of the Fraser region has been underserved by transportation infrastructure in recent years. We need to work together to achieve better transportation services for commuters across Delta, Surrey, White Rock and Langley. I look forward to working with our Mayors’ Council to get this done. 4 What will be your biggest challenge?

One of the greatest challenges in our community is ensuring that residents across South and North Delta feel like they are being treated fairly. For too long, residents in North Delta have felt a sense of alienation from their neighbours in South Delta. A lot of this has to do with distance. Whenever citizens living in North Delta need to access City Hall, they have to drive all the way down to Ladner, sometimes in poor weather, to receive city services. As Mayor, I have committed to holding every other Delta Council Meeting in North Delta – so that if you have an issue or a concern, you can bring it to Council in North Delta. This is a common sense move that I am proud of. It is about fairness and respect for over half of Delta’s population. I am pleased that our

By continuing to grow our Delta tax-base by attracting new businesses to our city centres and industrial areas, we can ensure that Delta has the funding it needs to keep taxes low and our budget in surplus. There is nothing more detrimental to the long-term growth and sustainability of our city than deficits and debt financing. Our young families want to know that their tax dollars are going towards city programs and infrastructure improvements, not debt payments.

BC – and the safety concerns are also top of mind for me.”

first regular meeting of 2018 was held in North Delta and I look forward to keeping my promise to alternate between our two communities for every regular meeting of Council over the next four years. 5 How will your approach be different from that of former Delta Mayor?

I have a lot of respect for Councillor Jackson. Under her leadership as Mayor, we eliminated Delta’s debt and were rated the fourth best city in BC to live and raise a family. I am honoured to have her on our Council, now as a Councillor again, to provide her wisdom and experience, as an asset to our newer Council members. I plan on protecting and expanding on her legacy by keeping Delta debt free and our taxes low, but also by modernizing certain aspects of our municipal government. I look forward to working with staff and Council to increase child care spaces and implement much needed programs for young families across our community. I also want Delta to provide more support to families suffering with mental health and addiction. We can’t let anyone in Delta feel like they are alone. We need to help our neighbours. 6 You have promised to keep taxes low and Delta debt-free. How will you make it happen?

DARPAN

TM

One of my biggest challenges will be to work with Council to deliver on our commitment to keep young families and seniors in Delta. You know, many young people throughout our community can’t afford to live here anymore. They are being priced out to areas like Langley, Abbotsford, or even further, because there aren’t enough housing options for them here. Same goes for our seniors – we need more housing options so that seniors have the option to downsize and stay in our community rather than move away. I have committed to reworking our permit application process in order to make it easier to create those housing options, without sacrificing the character of our communities or our open agricultural land. We don’t have to choose between protecting our Delta farmland and creating housing options for our young people and our seniors – we can do both and we must do both. 8 What can Delta residents expect in the 2019 budget?

In our 2019 budget, I expect Council to support funding for new infrastructure projects, including our plan to spearhead and fund a new track facility at North Delta Secondary School. Our Delta athletes deserve quality playing surfaces, and so do members of the public. I look forward to working with our School Board counterparts to make this a reality. 9 What will the Delta Families First policy include?

Putting Delta families first means that Delta families get the priority when it comes to registration for Delta Parks and Recreation programs. Right now, Delta families have a short three-day window to sign up for recreation programs before families from outside of our community are allowed to register. In our busy daily lives, three days is simply not enough, and many families are expressing frustration that coveted spots in their favorite programs are being filled up before they get a chance to register. I am pursuing a policy that will give families two full weeks to register for programs exclusively before those that live outside of the community are invited to fill those spots. I also believe that Delta families should be paying less for these programs, since they are already heavily subsidized through tax contributions to the City. 10

What is your message to the Delta residents?

As the Mayor of Delta, I will strive to build a stronger society that is founded on the values of peace, community and prosperity for all Delta residents.

the team as well. Soolsma finished second in Vancouver Metro Soccer League (VMSL) league, scoring in each of the past two seasons, and he carried this elite finishing ability to the provincials and the nationals. He scored a hat trick for the Hurricanes to win the provincials final and another four goals to win the national championship. Soolsma recalls how the team “started the season with nine straight wins. We were just clicking which led to believing we can win the league and that really sharpened our focus throughout the year.” The talented coach and player won the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals at the nationals with eight tallies – the most goals scored by a player in this tournament in 18 years. The game itself started out excellently for the Hurricanes as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half. From there it was smooth sailing as the Hurricanes kept the pressure on to win by an astounding 7-3 margin with four goals by Soolsma, two by Ryan Dhillon and one by Pavi Dhillon. All the players made note of how their preparation was crucial to this success. Prior to the big game, the team watched and studied the games played by the Ontario team in order to plan their attack. “Watching the games made a big difference. We saw how none of the other teams were pressuring Ontario, so our game plan was to attack early. We took an early lead, shocked them and never looked back,” adds Soolsma. Jason Gill has been Hurricanes’ captain for last three years. He commends on the team for “training twice as much, putting our heads down and getting to work. All the little things added up to help us get that national championship.” A major factor in the team’s success was their physio team. “The team’s fitness improved throughout the year, they were a lot fresher and this set the tone for their play,” says Indy Khaira, a member of the physio team. Another accomplishment for BC Tigers Hurricanes was winning the Fair Play Award at the national tournament, which was given to the team that displayed the best sportsmanship and professionalism on and off the field. BC Tigers Hurricanes team, comprising mostly on Indo-Canadian players, is a testament to the strength and will of this community, and they proved it on a national stage.

Jasneet Nijjar with coach Jessie Dosanjh

Her coach Jessie Dosanjh mentioned that “she is always used to winning here but going to the Games she was able to see the tougher competitions. Now she sees the challenge ahead of her and can set her sights on improving her craft.” Aside from her performance on the track, Jasneet revels in her experience just being a part of this major competition. “The Olympic Games were a great experience. I would walk through the dining hall and see people from all over the world, it was a cool experience,” she recalls. The young sprinter also thoroughly enjoyed taking in the other events of the games. Nijjar notes that “being able to watch all the different competitions going on was great too. All my local competitions only involved track and field but here we could see other sports like diving or gymnastics.” Jasneet joined the Universal Athletics Club 10 years ago in the Rascals division and has been with the organization ever since. The Universal Athletics Club has some of the province’s fastest male and female track athletes. The running champion is also serving a mentorship role as a coach for the club. She conducts weekly training sessions with the Rascals group as a way to give back

to the community and the organization. “I love coaching, it has been a lot of fun and I really enjoy this opportunity to help these kids develop their talents,” says Jasneet. This past June, Jasneet’s intensive training paid off as she pulled off a historic feat of winning the 100m, 200m and 400m women’s sprints. She describes how she “was so close to winning the 100m, it really pushed me to go for all three races this year. I was not going to end this year without winning those three medals.”

TM

In her athletic history, Jasneet has also won many hurdles and jumps competitions on top of her sprinting accomplishments. The next plan for her on the field is to train for the heptathlon. Given her prior success in more than just sprinting, this could be an excellent route for her to pursue. She certainly has all the physical and mental tools to be successful. Dosanjh is confident that Jasneet can easily continue her dominance at the provincial level. “Her dedication to the sport and commitment she makes towards training and getting better can’t be beat. The sky is the limit for her and we know she will do big things on an international level.” When asked about her future, Jasneet is optimistic and knows she has options. She understands that “there are more opportunities in the United States, they also have more funding and support for their athletes. But for now, I am just focusing on my studies this year.” The bright student is also the president of her student council at Queen Elizabeth Secondary and aspires to study kinesiology ahead. Jasneet is one of Canada’s most auspicious young athletes with the potential to make waves felt around the world. She is another youth in the South Asian community who has shown the value of hard work and commitment. She is an inspiration for Indo-Canadians, especially for Indo-Canadian women who may feel like they will not be appreciated in sport. Jasneet’s success and passion is proof that sports is for both men and women and for people of all ethnic backgrounds. Her future is bright, and nothing can stop her from being the best.

He was quickly recognized as a reasonably priced, honest, and very talented doctor. Other veterinarians in the vicinity of Dr. Bhullar’s clinics were unhappy with his presence. In an effort to curtail further licensing of immigrating Indian veterinarians from Punjab, the scheme of an English Proficiency Exam was implemented in May 2004. This was

intentionally made difiicult to pass so as to stop the “pipeline” of veterinarians from Punjab. In 2004, a huge public rally under Dr. Bhullar’s leadership at the office of the BCVMA ensued gaining media uproar. After a Human Rights complaint was filed, there were numerous threats against Dr. Bhullar to stop the HR proceedings; his license was also revoked. But after over 10 years of legal fight which cost millions of dollars and took a personal toll, Dr. Bhullar finally got justice in this case against systemic racism.

he debate on environmental activism may have gained a tumultuous momentum in recent years but the struggle to bring justice for all the harm and damage done to the environment has been a long one. From writers, leaders and politicians to students, educators and average citizens, the journey to bring environmental reforms has recorded excruciating accounts of protests, punishment and purge of environment-dependent communities. From India’s Chipko movement that started in the 1970s to resist the destruction of forests, to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in the United States that demonstrated against threat to the region’s clean water and ancient burial grounds, there have been several movements to preserve an undisrupted harmony with

the environment. One of these movements has been the Save Animals Initiative (SAI) Sanctuary. Located in the Southern region of India, the Sanctuary has grown leaps and bounds to own up to it’s name. SAI Sanctuary mentions on their website that “the Sanctuary’s rich variety of flora includes hundreds of different indigenous trees and plants – many of medicinal value – as well as numerous rare and threatened species of animal.” More than 300 different kinds of birds frequent the forest canopy, according to SAI Sanctuary. In 1991, Dr. Anil Malhotra and Pamela Malhotra established the SAI Sanctuary, which is probably India’s first private wildlife sanctuary. The couple has dedicated more than two decades to the forest and cause, however, the landscape was very different when they first arrived with the mission to transform this depleted piece of land into a sanctuary. “When I came here with a friend

The owner wanted to sell [it] because he couldn’t grow coffee or anything else,” Anil said while speaking to The Times of India in an interview and added, “For me and Pamela, this was what we were looking for all our life.” The couple met in the US where Anil was running a restaurant business and Pamela was a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company. Their love for nature and the environment motivated them to first settle in Hawaii. They bought land and began their long envisioned conservation efforts. Anil and Pamela ventured into organic farming on a small portion of land, intended for personal consumption. Excess produce was donated to a local women’s shelter. For a brief period of time, everything seemed to be functioning fine but they soon realized that invasion of construction projects were wreaking havoc on the ecosystem of the island. Other factors such as extravagant tourism and import of supplies from the mainland at 40 per cent higher value, further dampened their conservation efforts. Due to Anil’s father’s severe illness at this point, the couple was forced to fly to India. This was also an opportunity for them to introspect their work and future on the island. Despite a few hiccups, their trip to India became the advent of a series of events eventually leading to the establishment of what is now the SAI Sanctuary. After exploring their options for establishing a sanctuary in North India, Anil and Pamela, mesmerized by the beauty and lured by

The Centre for Child Development, located in Surrey, has provided services to children across the Fraser Valley for over 65 years. With the help of an extraordinary team of over 100 staff, the Centre offers therapeutic services to over 2,700 children each year. Their services include physiotherapy, communication therapy, and developmental medicine. The Centre is successful in fulfilling its reputable mission statement of helping children with special needs reach their full potential. n the time of digital age, where we are burdened by an information-overload, expectations sometimes surpass capabilities. Starting from school where we are encouraged to volunteer and take part in extra-curricular activities to going above and beyond at the workplace, there is constant pressure to do more – to be more. Inspirational quotes and motivational posters flood our social media feeds as enablers of encouragement to keep moving forward. However, what if we were told that it’s okay to give up? What if giving up could actually be something beautiful?

DARPAN

TM

What a radical thought! Achieving success can seem like a race, in which we try to have it all. As we hustle through the path of greatness, we can be losing more than we think. ‘Giving up’, in this context, does not mean slacking off or letting go of meaningful initiatives, but rather strategically choosing to pursue only what truly matters – be it health, family or a passion. When it comes to implementation, the aforementioned may involve declining one’s involvement in a particular activity or opportunity. Sometimes, it encompasses backing out of something we have already committed to. That said, our personality may simply make it too difficult for us to say “no,” and lead us to take on more than we can effectively handle. We may believe that opting out will reflect negatively on our reputation and might create more work for FROM the other party. However, it is often in our head. Other people tend to generally understand when we explain situations and genuinely list out the reasons behind our actions. Living in a ‘yes’ culture can make it seem as though we must always be go-getters, but it’s okay to pause. Through a short-sighted lens, we sometimes find ways to convince ourselves that a commitment is only temporary or will be over soon.

DARPAN REFLECTION Consider this: we think so much before investing our money, but why not before investing our time, which can never be earned back? Hence, it is vital that we take a bird’s eye perspective and think whether or not the channels through which we spend our time will add value in the grand scheme of things. This may look like making a running list of pros and cons for a decision or perhaps a simple conversation with yourself surrounding requiring trade-offs. If you are reducing focus on the gym, or family get-togethers to partake in an activity or work more, is the sacrifice worth it? There is no objectively right answer; the stance varies case by case. The point is to engage in this exercise and question the ultimate purpose of every decision. In light of purpose, we do have goals that we strive to achieve. Holding those goals constant, we center all our actions around an objective. We tell ourselves that the reason behind everything is the fruit at the end of the path. While this is a positive way to grow outside one’s comfort zone and achieve what was previously not thought possible, an important callout needs to be made: it’s okay to not change yourself, but change your goals instead. Moreover, sometimes, the targets we want to hit are not made by us, but are either a direct output of others’ expectations of us or a reflection of what we think they expect. Regardless, life is an evolving, dynamic journey. Goals are not set in stone, but should be periodically revisited to see if they make sense given changing circumstances and priorities. Next time you make a decision about investing your time, let your instinct guide the way and listen to your often-right gut. Be it a project, volunteer opportunity, work engagement or another activity, ask yourself:

1

How will this benefit me? Will I be happier? Develop more skills? Make more connections?

2

What will this take away time from? Will I have time for self-care? Will I see my family less?

3

Is the trade-off between the above two questions a healthy balance?

Overall, no decision is perfect, and every challenge can be navigated with a positive mindset. That said, understanding that ‘giving up’ does not necessarily contain a negative connotation can be life-changing. When it comes to time, giving up in one area brings along the beauty of gaining in another to holistically enhance your quality life.

Only legal adults are allowed to buy, use or possess cannabis

The Cannabis Act:

6

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Canadians are legally allowed to grow, buy and use cannabis – provided they abide by certain regulations. BY TARANA RANA

O

n October 17, 2018, the Cannabis Act came into effect across Canada, which legalized the use of recreational marijuana. This means adults are legally allowed to grow, buy and use cannabis – provided they abide by certain regulations. Here are the six most important things you need to know about Canada’s new laws.

You must be of legal age (as defined by your province or territory) to buy, use or possess cannabis. In British Columbia, the legal age is 19. According to the Government of Canada’s website, legal adults are able to do the following:

ü

Possess up to 30 grams of legal cannabis, dried or equivalent in non-dried form in public

ü ü

Share up to 30 grams with other adults Purchase cannabis products from a provincial or territorial retailer

You are required to store cannabis away from children, youth and pets.

You can grow up to four cannabis plants for personal use Under the Cannabis Act, adults are allowed to grow cannabis at home for personal use and must not be visible from public spaces off the property. “Each residence can cultivate up to four cannabis plants,” explains Cpl. Elenore Sturko, media relations officer at the Surrey RCMP. “Anyone who contravenes this regulation may be subject to fines.” In addition, in B.C., home cultivation will be banned in certain dwellings such as daycares. Landlords and strata councils will also be given the authority to restrict or prohibit home cultivation.

Legal cannabis will have an excise stamp To ensure you are purchasing legal cannabis, always look out for the excise stamp on the packaging. “The excise stamp is placed on the product package by the federally Licensed Producer, not by the retailer,” says Hope Latham, public affairs officer for B.C.’s Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. These are stamps that appear in different colours, depending on your province or territory. According to Latham, future stores holding a non-medical cannabis retail license will also have to post their license in a visible place within the store. “There are currently no provincially licensed private non-medical cannabis storefronts in Surrey, BC,” shares Latham. She clarifies that there is only one government non-medical cannabis retail store in B.C., which is located in Kamloops. To purchase legally, adults 19 and over can visit www.bccannabisstores.com to view the products available online as well as find information on how to use non-medical cannabis safely and responsibly and the risks involved.

In British Columbia, adults are able to use nonmedical cannabis in public spaces where tobacco smoking and vaping are permitted. However, it is forbidden in any places frequented by children.

There are restrictions on where you are allowed to consume cannabis In British Columbia, adults are able to use non-medical cannabis in public spaces where tobacco smoking and vaping are permitted. However, it is forbidden in any places frequented by children. “Cannabis consumption (in all forms) is banned on K-12 school properties, as well as any adjacent sidewalks or boulevards,” says Cpl. Sturko from Surrey RCMP.

It’s also illegal for both driver and passenger to consume cannabis in a car. “Cannabis consumption is generally not allowed in vehicles whether they are parked or moving, but it can be used in motorhomes or other motor vehicles, or campers, or trailers if it’s being used as a private residence and is parked off a public road or forest service road where camping is allowed.” Cpl. Sturko also notes that “local and Indigenous governments can set additional restrictions on public use of cannabis under existing powers to establish bylaws.” In addition, landlords and strata councils are able to restrict or prohibit non-medical cannabis smoking at tenanted and strata properties.

It is illegal to cross the border with cannabis Despite the fact that cannabis is now legal and regulated for adults in Canada, it remains illegal to transport cannabis across the Canadian border. You could be subject to criminal charges, even if cannabis is legal in the place you are travelling to. If you are entering Canada with cannabis in any form, you must declare it to the Canadian Border Services Agency and failure to do so could result in arrest or prosecution. It is also important to keep in mind when you’re travelling within Canada that cannabis laws are different between provinces and territories. “The legal age to purchase, possess and consume cannabis and restrictions around where cannabis can be used in public are [some of the] rules that vary across the country,” says Latham. “Specific information on cannabis laws can be found on individual provincial and territorial websites, like under the Travel section of B.C’s website: www. GetCannbisClarity.ca.”

Drug impaired driving remains illegal in B.C. You cannot consume cannabis and drive. Despite cannabis legalization, “drug-impaired driving is, and remains illegal in Canada,” says Cpl. Sturko. “Currently the Surrey RCMP has officers trained to detect, deter, and enforce drug-impaired driving using roadside Standard Field Sobriety Testing and Drug Recognition Expert evaluations.” Beside being illegal for a driver or a passenger to consume cannabis in a car, there are also laws around the transportation of cannabis. For example, cannabis can be transported in a car only if “it is in its orginal, unopened packaging or is inaccessible to the driver and occupants, for example, in the trunk,” says Cpl. Sturko. As we enter into a new era of legalized recreational cannabis, it is important to be aware of the laws and regulations. If you’re planning to use cannabis, it is also advisable to know the health effects. “Surrey RCMP would like to remind the public to be responsible in their use of cannabis, please to not drive while under the influence of cannabis, and please do not smoke or vape in areas where it is prohibited,” says Cpl. Sturko.

water. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit it to not more than two drinks per party and definitely not more than 14 drinks a week. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or other health condition, the above alcohol limit should be lowered further. Make sure to eat food while drinking. You can divide into 10 minute intervals each time, three times during the day. Healthy eating during holidays doesn’t have to be an obstacle or stressor. Plan ahead. Make grocery shopping lists and when shopping, never go on an empty stomach. If you are hungry while shopping, you will be thinking about fast food and are more likely to grab unhealthy snacks. 1

Know what mental health is

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as a state of wellbeing. The lack of a visible disease or sickness does not necessarily equate to a person who is emotionally, psychologically, and socially well-off. Registered psychologist Dr. Kamaljit Sidhu, Ph.D., explains that mental health can be depicted on a continuum, where a person must meet certain criteria to be declared clinically ill; short periods of stresses are normal, but persisted symptoms should not be overlooked. Common examples of mental illnesses include major depression, anxiety and ADHD. Mental health can also be looked upon as the strength of one’s relationship with the self through which you (a) recognize what makes you truly happy and (b) accept yourself wholeheartedly the way you are.

TM

2

Understand the ‘why’

3

Talk about it

The way we think, feel and behave dictates our actions, involvement in the community and ability to deal with life’s stresses. Award-winning professional, Dr. Shimi Kang MD, FRCPC, puts into perspective that mental health conditions affect one in four people regardless of culture, education and background. Moreover, mental health is not a choice; it is a part of every individual, impacting not only the self, but others around us.

Undoubtedly, there has been increased community involvement and media coverage in the past few years, but there is still opportunity for growth. Family and friends should showcase empathy (understanding), not sympathy (feeling sorry for): a. Proactively ask a loved one what is going on if changes in behaviour are noticed b. Listen attentively and genuinely rather than brushing off or minimizing a point c. Ask how you can help Bottling up feelings and thoughts can act as obstacles towards the light at the end of the tunnel. Shreya Patel, documentary film maker and actress, shares, “I personally feel that sharing my story with my family was the best thing I did. I, for the first time, felt heard and cared for and realized that I wasn’t alone, which was highly comforting and really helped me recover.”

Evaluate your lifestyle

In today’s fast-paced world, we usually only pay attention to our bodies when problems arise. It is wiser to take preventative measures that help us live fulfilling lives by sleeping well, routinely exercising, building positive social connections, following passions, practicing regular self-care, and avoiding substance abuse. Registered clinical social worker, Alex Sangha, adds that work also plays a role by providing routine and structure and boosts self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-identity. Recognizing the arguably obvious nature of these suggestions, Dr. Kang eloquently says, “Simple is not easy. Knowing is not doing, but doing leads to being healthy in our mind and body.” Dr. Kang further outlines the challenge of technology in maintaining our mental health and creatively recommends that we view technology in similar light as we see food: a. Healthy technology would be a support group on social media or video calling a loved one in another country to lift our spirits. b. Junk technology encompasses video games and social media apps that are okay once in a while, but can be detrimental if not limited. c. Toxic technology includes cyberbullying, pornography and social media comparisons that negatively impact the self and can create long-lasting problems.

DARPAN FEATURE

5

Explore your options

After recognizing the potential existence of an issue, the key lies in doing something about it. Dr. Sidhu brings attention to the countless misconceptions surrounding treatment, with many people still believing Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and hospitalization to be the only way out. Educate yourself with what your alternatives are. RESEARCH HAS FIRMLY ESTABLISHED THAT EXERCISE CAN BE A POWERFUL TOOL WHEN IT COMES TO COMBATTING ISSUES LIKE DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND STRESS.

FITNESS

WITH

you’re like many people, the first few weeks of winter bring a welcome seasonal change. But as the cold, rain, and dark set in, so can a case of the winter blues. As you might have heard, research has firmly established that exercise can be a powerful tool when it comes to combatting issues like depression, anxiety and stress. So how can you use fitness to make your winter brighter? Here are a few suggestions.

1

Don’t wait until the winter blues creep in to start working out. Establish a consistent workout routine ahead of time to help stave off depression before it starts. Choose days and times for your workout, and stick to your schedule. If you find that you have trouble keeping on track, consider enlisting a workout partner to help with motivation.

3 Get your cardio

While resistance training has been shown to combat depression, most studies assert that cardio is the surest form of exercise to stave off the blues. This is because it releases a range of feel-good endorphins and other brain chemicals. To get the most out of your cardio routine, be sure to get at least 30-45 minutes of heart-raising exercise three to five times a week.

Find your space

When the weather is nice, it’s easy to head outside and get in some physical activity. Once winter arrives, however, you need to find a way to bring your workout indoors. Find your indoor workout space. That might mean joining a gym, or it might mean clearing out some room in your home. Whatever the case, find a place where you have the room and tools necessary for a good workout.

4Think high-intensity

Research has shown that the more you get your heart rate up, the stronger the anti-depressant effects will be. That means increasing the intensity of your exercise. This can be accomplished in a number of ways – by moving faster, increasing the difficulty with elevation or weights, or by using a HIIT routine. But if increasing the intensity of your workout isn’t an option, don’t let it dissuade you. Low-intensity exercise is still better than none at all.

is better 5 Some than none

To get the maximum effect out of your routine, you’ll ideally work out consistently, meaning three to five times a week. But studies have shown that even inconsistent exercise is better than no exercise at all. So if maintaining a regular regimen is impossible, do your best to get in the sporadic burst of exercise as often as possible. That could mean a quick visit to the gym, inserting sets between activities at home, or even taking the stairs rather than the elevator.

your efforts 6 Support with proper nutrition

A healthy diet is an essential aspect of any fitness routine. In fact, if you’re working out extensively without eating enough to accommodate the efforts, you could actually be doing more harm than good due to the added stress put on your body. Be sure to get a balance of protein and healthy carbs from whole, unprocessed foods. There are even healthy foods that have been shown to combat depression, like salmon, sweet potatoes, avocados, broccoli, and leafy greens.

We all wish that exercise would deliver its effects instantly as if by magic, but that’s not how it works. Just like it takes time to burn off fat and gain muscle, you won’t see the full anti-depressant effects for around two weeks. In other words, don’t give up.

8

Get plenty of sleep

Regular, deep sleep not only helps to stave off depression, but is an essential part of recovering from a workout. At the same time, working out helps to promote quality sleep. So be sure to get the recommended seven to eight hours every night.

RULE BOOK BY SHWETA KULKARNI

inter is certainly pleasant if you are just sitting by the fireplace, tucked in your warm and cosy corner, reading your favourite book or watching your favourite show, while sipping on a hot cup of favourite beverage. However, the cold weather becomes quite a bother the minute you decide to step out, especially because of the fashion limitations the winter season sets in. You often tend to slip into the dark zone with heavy sweaters and thick layered clothing. But winter certainly doesn’t mean you set your fashion sense on hibernation mode. There are several ways to keep up with the fashionista in you and at the same time stay warm. Here is list of do’s and don’ts to beat the winter blues in style.

Do The Mix & Match Mix and match work splendidly well during winters. And yes, you can still wear your spring and summer clothes, but, of course, with a few tweaks here and there. Wear your favourite summer dress with a nice furry warm coat, throw a woollen scarf around it, wear warm tights and round up the look with high boots and woollen cap. Voila, you are all set to slay with your style quotient. You don’t need to pack away your shorts either. You can wear them with warm bright tights and boots to put your best foot forward this winter. Smart layering also comes in handy when it comes to mixing and matching your winter and summer clothes. Just remember, don’t override too much and try to put everything together. Cleaner the style, more modern the outlook.

Don’t let the cold chills dampen your style game, check out our fashion guide and effortlessly make heads turn every time you step out. Don’t Just Bid Adieu To The Old School Formula No matter how much you love your mules and sandals, waterproof boots are a win-win deal during winters. Normal or best preferred high ankle boots will match up your winter wear and will help you navigate through the snowy fields. It will also help to keep your feet dry and comfortable. You can also club them up with accessories to get an edgy military look. And yes, there are plenty of fashionable styles available in the market, so don’t think boots are blah!

DARPAN Style Do Accessorize Accessories make everything better, they are the essential vitamins to fashion. Apart from matching your shoes and bags with your outfits the mainstream way this winter, try something unconventional as well. Pick up some warm hats and pair them up with scarves to give your winter attire a fresh look. Colourplay with the gloves to add an edge. Statement jewellery is also great to add some pizzazz to your winter look. When winter can offer so much in your fashion cart, why stick to the ordinary pattern?

Don’t Shy Away From Colours When the cold vibes set in, it’s natural to reach out for darker shades, but the key to making a stunning style statement during winters is to not let the greys outside cloud over your sunshine. Dare to be bold and dress up in bright colours. The colours that are dominating this season are deep red, emerald green, yellow, and charcoal grey. Even the soothing pastels are turning out to be quite hot this cold season. You can also add a dash of colour to your outfit with a brightly coloured bag, tights or boots. But don’t go overboard with your colour fetish, the trick here is to smartly balance your ensemble.

Don’t Skip The Coat! Do The Whites Who said whites can’t be worn in winters! White definitely is trending this season and it needs to be added to your winter wardrobe. You can go for a complete white look by pairing a white coat with matching trousers and tops or mix shades of white and cream in different textures and weights. Just make sure to occasionally add them to your ensemble to create a chic and elegant winter look.

Throwing over a coat while stepping out doesn’t mean restricting your oomph quotient. When it gets too cold to handle, a coat undeniably is your best buddy. But that doesn’t mean you need to bundle yourself into some boring dark coats. Get something fancy for yourself in vibrant hues, if you may please. Something that is beautifully tailored and helps define your shape. Accessorize the smart way to make the best of your winter coats. This will not only keep you warm but will also help you make a style statement. The 70s style velvet and chequered coats with ample lapels are quite hot on the fashion circuit this year, so are tweed and candy-hued coats. Long coats with voluminous fur sleeves are also something to consider while buying outerwear this season.

F

ashion is individual! It could be what makes one comfortable. Indian fashion has never been about trends. People should be themselves and feel beautiful, by choosing what makes them feel spectacular. Styling shouldn’t be too overbearing, it should reflect the woman’s personal style. If you truly believe in your emancipation, you should want to look like yourself. That is the true spirit of being modern. I think in a country like ours, which is bi-lingual, which has so many different economic strata and cultural strata; there is never any one trend.

Q

What is the inspiration behind the couture collection?

A

fter everything I’ve seen, witnessed and heard in this past year, the point of departure was lightness - the unbearable lightness of being, a spirit of freeing and clothes that reflect the emancipation and lightness of women rather than decorative bondage. To me that’s a strong metaphor. To be true to our commitment, to be a new voice of tradition – to reinvent time tested techniques and many with our new continuation. To emancipate fashion – to redefine ourselves, in many facets, to blend weaves, embroidery, age old technique with a state of the art fashion as defined by the best studios in Europe. All that we were, and more and more and more!

Q

I

What is the fashion forecast for 2019?

n my opinion, the biggest bridal trends for this and the upcoming wedding season are elegance, elegance and more elegance as opposed to being over the top. Lightness, movement, pastel colours, looking like yourself and the contemporization of being bridal.

Its groundbreaking convertible design compresses line array speakers into a rechargeable, 120-watt, all-in-one karaoke and PA system. It features a four-to-six hour rechargeable battery, so the unit can be placed anywhere either with or without electrical outlet. It also has a multi-color LED light with on/ off switch that dances to the beat of music. Users can enjoy hours of music entertainment from the unit’s built-in USB MP3 player, FM and line inputs, while Bluetooth allows users to access thousands of karaoke songs on YouTube via any smartphone or tablet. Drifting away from the norm, this stellar piece of audio equipment will soon drift its way into your favourite place of entertainment.

Bienvenue à

Montréal

Montréal is not only a historic Canadian city, but it is one of the most electrifying, cultured cities in the world. BY RENU SINGH-JOSEPH

A

fter 25 years, Montréal was whispering for me to come back and visit. I couldn’t resist the call, so I boarded a plane and headed east to one of the most electrifying, cultured cities in the world. Founded in 1642, Montréal is a historic Canadian city bordered by two rivers – St. Lawrence to its south and Rivière des Prairies to its north. A fun fact, Montréal is completely surrounded by water and therefore is an island – this is a great geographical feature for tourists, who will witness beautiful water views from different areas throughout the city. Montréal is a destination, where there is always something going on from its renowned festivals and seasonally-themed events to experiencing all the best sights, cuisine and nightlife that the city has to offer.

Here are a few of my favourite things to do, places to see and experiences to be had in this vibrant, gorgeous city!

Old Montréal Spend a day exploring the beauty and charm of Old Montréal. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to 17th century Europe – the cobblestone streets and shops are bustling; there are festive plazas to sit and people-watch; or pick from one of the many restaurants, cafes and bars to relax in while you enjoy this elegant neighbourhood.

Old Port located along the St. Lawrence River, this historic port is home to the Montréal Science Centre and the classic Clock Tower and its picturesque beach. The iconic Montréal Observation Wheel offers panoramic views – 60 meters high when you’re at the top – of the river, city and more. The best part – the cabins are air-conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter. At night, the Observation Wheel lights up and is a magical sight to behold!

Mount Royal

IMAGES: ISTOCK, COURTESY OF RENU SINGH-JOSEPH, MUZIQUE

Notre Dame Basilica is the “first church of the Gothic Revival style in Canada” and its stunning exterior is reminiscent of the infamous Notre-Dame in Paris. Walking into the basilica is a breathtaking experience, from the altarpiece and celebration altar to the pulpit and great Casavant organs, the interior is truly magnificent featuring brilliant hues of blue, rich shades of gold, and intricate decorative designs. The vivid stained glass windows add to the majestic feel of the interior. Since 2017, Notre Dame presents ‘AURA’ five evenings a week – a “unique luminous experience” that allows individuals to appreciate and rediscover the “architectural wonders of the Basilica.” Close to 1 million people visit Notre-Dame annually and it’s worth the visit – add this to your to-do list for Montréal. After spending some time at Notre-Dame, take a short walk to Le Saint-Sulpice Hotel. This luxury hotel with friendly staff is the perfect place to stop in for a coffee or cocktail at its Sinclair Restaurant and Bar. During the warmer months, you’ll want to sit on the Sinclair Terrace for alfresco dining among the hotel’s gardens.

A trip to Montréal would be incomplete without visiting its “small mountain at the heart of the city.” Mount Royal, with an elevation of 233 metres (764 feet), is home to a beautiful park and attractions; summit and lookout points offering differing city viewpoints; and is a destination for nature enthusiasts with diverse paths and trails – walking, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. During the winter months, you can continue to walk/hike Mount Royal, in addition to indulging in winter activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and snow tubing.

Mount Royal Cross – this cross, 30 metres in height, has become a Montréal iconic landmark since it was erected in 1924.

Mount Royal Chalet and Kondiaronk Belvedere – a popular attraction for Montrealers and tourists alike, the Kondiaronk Belvedere lookout offers unparalled, panoramic views of downtown Montréal, the St. Lawrence River and Monteregian Hills in the distance. Once you’re done admiring the views, check out Mount Royal Chalet. Built in the Great Depression, the grandiose chalet features vaulted ceilings with chandeliers and wooden/metal beams, large-scale paintings illustrating Montréal history on its walls and a grand fireplace all adding to the chalet’s rustic decor. The chalet is home to a gift shop, restaurant and information kiosk for tourists.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal – a Roman Catholic basilica and national shrine visited by thousands each year, and at the foot of the Oratory, 99 wooden steps are reserved for pilgrims wishing to climb on their knees and pray. Its Votive Chapel is home to “10,000 votive lamps and candles,” while its Basilica features an “impressive dome topped with a cross and is the highest point in Montréal at 293 metres in height.”

Nightlife Known as the nightlife capital of Canada, Montréal offers an eclectic mix of everything from rooftop bars, microbreweries and jazz and supper clubs to live music venues, clubs and afterhours. A few of my favourites include:

Muzique Montréal A Montréal hot spot since 2009, Muzique is known for its fabulous parties; opulent, sultry decor and style; and for showcasing live music with artists performing and DJ’s spinning. On top of that, Muzique is a regular hangout for celebrity guests from Drake, Jamie Foxx, Lil Jon and Vin Diesel to Guns n Roses, Tiesto and the late Avicii and legendary late Prince. What can people expect when they visit Muzique? “A sold out party, great music and a story to tell the next day,” says Jason Tull, public relations for Muzique. Tull goes on to say that Muzique offers themed rooms – the main room focuses on House and Top 40 music, while the second room plays Hip Hop and R&B and lastly, there is an awesome “rooftop patio bar. Whatever you’re looking for, we have it!” The night we visited Muzique, we had the opportunity to see DJ, MC and record producer Walshy Fire of Major Lazer spin for the crowd and it was definitely a night to remember! At Muzique, it’s all about building relationships and taking care of Montrealers, out-of-towners and celebrity guests alike – it’s important for their team to cultivate a seamless evening and create an unforgettable experience!

NEW NAME, SAME WELCOME EXPERIENCE

LINCOLN NAUTILUS BY BENJAMIN YONG

Like every Lincoln, the Nautilus is all about providing a welcoming experience to drivers.

T

o the casual observer, it may appear Lincoln has deep sixed most of its old lineup. In a way this is true – the company is tying in the introduction of redesigned models with fresh nomenclature revolving around nautical and aeronautical themes. A perfect example of this is the new Nautilus, formerly known as the MKX. Teased at last year’s LA Auto show, it was only appropriate that the fall media drive DARPAN attended took place in sunny Santa Barbara. No, there isn’t much resemblance here to the outgoing luxury mid-size crossover. The old face of the brand, the split wing grille, is out, and the mesh repeating star grille is in, as seen on the Continental, Navigator and others.

The huge infotainment display however is a nice touch and is fully connected with SYNC 3 and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. Even my personal favourite navigation app Waze is integrated, something not commonly seen in cars yet. staying composed in various driving environments and keeping most of the road noise out. Equipped with Lincoln CoPilot360, a suite of cameras and radar-based safety and semi automonous technologies, the system can detect oncoming vehicles entering blind spots and approaching from behind when backing up; apply automatic emergency braking; and evasively steer around an obstacle to avoid a potential collision. We tested the adaptive cruise control a fair bit, which

In a straight line the feature worked great – the only time my co-driver and I found it questionable is when the Nautilus went a little jerky after we took an off-ramp and the markings on the pavement abruptly disappeared. The 2019 Lincoln Nautilus is built at Ford’s Oakville plant in Ontario, and is available in Select ($50,450) and Reserve ($55,350) grades.

Most people have seen the beautiful lines of the F-TYPE, available in both coupe and convertible form – although you’ll want the latter for reasons I will touch on in a moment, and the grade-topping SVR enhances the design even further. The intakes flanking the grille, for instance, are much larger singular units as opposed to split up as on the lower trim levels. The roof is covered in carbon fiber. Around the back, a complementary active carbon fiber race wing sits on the trunk, and the rear bumper diffuser is far more aggressive for increased aerodynamics, wrapped around quad exhaust tips rather than the standard centre exit duals. “The purity of the F-TYPE’s form is something truly special, but in designing the new F-TYPE SVR we had the opportunity to create something even more dramatic. Operation is nice and smooth as its name suggests, however if you’re not used to driving a manual transmission sports car the clutch will feel much stiffer than those found in run-of-the-mill passenger vehicles. Speaking of the transmission, the six-speed manual features a SynchroRev Match system that during downshifts automatically syncs engine speed for a smooth transition. Picture a perfect heel-and-toe gear change every time. For drivers who prefer manual operation of the procedure, a button next to the shifter deactivates the function.

suspension dampening, you can whip the car around corners with little thought or effort. Huge bright red four-piston front, two-piston rear brakes ensure quick stops as well. Although the 370Z is getting on in years, as it was introduced nearly a decade ago, this factory-modified variant keeps things fresh. Hits of red on the front chin spoiler, side skirts and rear diffuser are eye-catching, especially against the Pearl White paint option, and so is the larger flared out duckbill wing integrated into the trunk lid. Huge black-coloured 19-inch RAYS wheels finish off the package. In addition, the chunky aluminum vertical door handles present on all trim levels make a great design statement. Getting inside, passengers slide into body hugging Recaro bucket seats adorned with Alcantara, the suede material also found on the sporty steering wheel. Elsewhere in the cabin, however, is where the vehicle’s age truly shows. Don’t get me wrong – I love the three-pod oil temperature, voltmeter and clock gauges and presence of actual physical buttons to control infotainment settings, but the centre stack layout and plastic-heavy construction look dated and out of place on such a model. A Bose six-speaker stereo and a couple of subwoofers sufficiently take care of audio needs. Advanced Active Noise Cancellation and Active Sound Enhancement remove unwanted road and engine noise, leaving only a pleasant exhaust note.

seats. In the wet and damp conditions I had during testing it was very welcome, keeping the dampness out of body. This being a coupe, back seat room is adequate for adults and probably great for children. Let’s face it, coupe buyers don’t buy their cars for backseat room. That said, getting back there was easy enough as the seats easily flipped up for access. Going right along with the seats is the interior. I will be the first to admit that this Lexus was very easy to find everything. All the controls and switches were easy to discover and operate. Even the sound system and other controls that were seen through the dash screen worked flawlessly as you would expect. A touch pad in the center console allowed you to move about the screen easily. After a little playing and getting used to the speed in which it moves, I found it easy to navigate. The sound system has a volume control and tuner that are knobs that make life simple if you chose to do things manually and by feel, so you can keep your eyes on the road. On the practical side of things I was surprised at the size of the truck. I had to pick up a couple of bulky things for my wife and I found that the trunk was surprisingly roomy with 295-litre capacity. Back seats will also fold down in a 60/40 configuration which I would expect one could easily get golf or any other bulky sports equipment in. I liked my time in the RC and found it to be a comfortable car for day to day driving. Having not driven in a coupe in a while, the wider rear pillars around the back window did block my rear vision, but only a little bit of an inconvenience, although the lane departure warning devices helped my confidence when changing lanes. If a coupe is what you want, the RC 300 is well worth a look. At a base price of around $51,000 it is a pretty good value in the luxury coupe category.

Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, the film also marks the much-awaited debut of Saif Ali Khan’s daughter – Sara Ali Khan. Speaking about the film, director Abhishek Kapoor said, “Politics and others issues are constantly dividing us but at the core, we are one community that has always lived in harmony. Differences between Hindus and the Muslims only started around 40-50 years ago. It wasn’t there during the time of our elders. The film grew out of this realization. I needed somebody as strong as him to come onboard because you need to be a very self-assured actor to play this role. To let go those two feet is not easy. IT’S AWARDS SEASON AGAIN

BRACE

YOURSELF FOR THE

OSCARS BY JORGE IGNACIO CASTILLO

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY November 2 Few movies as troubled as this one have succeeded on reaching the screen. The original choice to play Freddie Mercury – Sacha Baron Cohen – quit following the realization that this would be a ‘light’ take on Queen’s lead singer. Once in production, the director (Bryan Singer) was fired midway through and the replacement (Dexter Fletcher) didn’t even get a credit for his efforts. Still, it’s the biopic on an iconic music figure, the most award-friendly of movies (see Ray, Walk the Line, Coal Miner’s Daughter). Oscar odds: Rami Malek as Mercury has a shot at Best Actor, but given the troubles the movie faced (let alone Fincher’s reputation), it’s unlikely we’ll see it anywhere else.

An unusually strong year for movies comes to an end with a veritable cavalcade of quality films. These are the ones you can’t miss.

BOY ERASED November 2 The second film about conversion therapy this year, Boy Erased beats The Miseducation of Cameron Post in about every level. The story of the son of a Baptist preacher sent to one of these re-education centers to “pray away the gay” is predictable but harrowing. The film goes beyond denouncing the so-called therapy – which can be boiled down to teaching self-hatred– to tackle the family dynamics behind the decision of sending a suggestible kid to one of these camps.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS December 19 54 years after the original, a sequel to the Disney classic looms (a dicey proposition if there was ever one). Emily Blunt takes over Julie Andrews as the magical nanny. Even though the character hasn’t aged, the kids from the original have become troubled, annoying adults, with children of their own. Nonsense ensues. Worth mentioning, LinManuel Miranda (of Hamilton fame) takes over Dick Van Dyke as the male lead, even though everyone’s favourite chimney sweep is at hand for a cameo.

Oscar odds: The acting is top notch across the board. Possible noms for Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman as the parents, and Lucas Hedges as the teen at the center of the ordeal.

THE FRONT RUNNER November 7 Hugh Jackman’s transition from action star to serious actor couldn’t possibly have been more seamless. The man once known as Wolverine takes on a real life politician, American senator Gary Hart, whose presidential ambitions were dashed when an extramarital affair was revealed (once upon a time, that behaviour was frowned upon). In the past, director Jason Reitman has turned difficult subjects into compelling human dramas (Thank You for Smoking, Up in the Air), so at least he is the right man for the job. Oscar odds: Because of timeliness, The Front Runner could sneak into the Best Picture, Director, Script and Lead Actor categories.

GREEN BOOK November 21 The winner of this year’s People’s Choice Awards at the Toronto Film Festival, Green Book is the definition of the crowd-pleaser. A perfectly balanced dramedy set in the Sixties, the film follows a sophisticated African-American pianist (Mahershala Ali) and his coarse, easygoing driver (Viggo Mortensen) as they make their way through the Deep South. While not as poignant as other films dealing with racial divide, it’s such a good-natured film, it gets the point across with extreme ease.

THE MULE December 14 There is no stopping Clint Eastwood, not even the fact he already directed a movie this year, the godawful The 15:17 to Paris. At least The Mule has a more straightforward narrative. Eastwood himself stars as a 90-year-old WWII veteran who, to make ends meet, starts transporting cocaine across the board. For such a conservative figure, it’s rather strange to see Eastwood at odds with the system. Oscar odds: Never mind his politics, Eastwood is a beloved figure in Hollywood. The one Academy Award he hasn’t won: Best Actor.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK November 30 Two years ago, Moonlight was the little movie that could. Now director Barry Jenkins couldn’t fly below the radar even if he wanted to. Jenkins’ follow-up film is an adaptation of James Baldwin’s seminal novel: A young African-American couple must navigate poverty, a fraught relationship with their families, and institutionalized racism in order to be together. One of those obstacles will be impossible to overcome. Oscar odds: It has a shot at Adapted Screenplay. Alas, since the subject is extremely topical, it may be acknowledged in other categories, even though Beale is not as audience-friendly as Moonlight.

The broadcast journalist recently won the prestigious America Mid-America Regional Emmy Award for her investigation on prescription medications errors.

P

rabjot (PJ) Kaur Randhawa, NBC’s investigative reporter in Missouri recently won the prestigious America Mid-America Regional Emmy Award in the ‘Health and Science’ category for her investigation on prescription medications errors. Randhawa is the first Sikh-Canadian broadcast journalist to be honoured with this Award. “The Mid-American Emmy Awards represent excellence in the broadcast and television industry. Thousands of people submit their work every year. I’d been nominated three times in 2017 but did not win. This year, I only received one nomination and by the grace of God, I won,” shares the elated award winner. Randhawa’s investigation into pharmacy medication errors revealed how many large chain pharmacies are putting profit over safety by requiring pharmacists to fill more prescriptions per hour. “The end

result is that a surprising number of people go home with the wrong medication – which can be fatal,” the young reporter points out, “I was able to question the head of the Missouri Pharmacy Board and discover they aren’t taking any action to monitor these corporate pressures, or ensure the safety of the public.” Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Randhawa received her bachelor’s degree in Mass Media and Film from Northeastern Illinois University. She graduated with a Masters degree in Journalism from DePaul University, Chicago. She has worked with various media organizations including KOTA TV,

PBS, WGN, The Chicago Tribune, FOX News, among others. Since 2015, she has been an investigative reporter at KSDK NBC in St. Louis, Missouri. A career as a journalist was never Randhawa’s first choice. Growing up shy, she studied film and wanted to stay behind the camera as a TV or film producer. She discovered her passion for reporting while pursing a graduate degree in Journalism. “Reporting is really just storytelling. Eventually I discovered such a passion for the stories and topics I was covering, I couldn’t think of anyone better to present them. I felt armed with skill, purpose and knowledge, and I finally thought “Why not me?”” recalls Randhawa. She was drawn to investigative journalism because of the good it can do. “Every day I come into contact with people who have been disenfranchised, broken, silenced or ignored. As an investigative reporter, I make it my mission to give people a voice. It’s a unique position because it

Q&A

What is your message for youth and those who wish to follow your path?

Work on being a good listener. Be polite. Treat the people you meet in your daily life with respect and dignity; it’s a good thing to be known for. Also, you don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to be heard. Indians around the world have made significant contributions to their immigrated countries, what do you think of this accomplishment?

I think it’s wonderful. I’m proud to be the daughter of Indian immigrants. I wish there was more recognition for the struggle and strength of character it takes to be successful as an immigrant.

allows you to hold the powerful accountable, expose wrongdoing, and most importantly – be an advocate for your community,” she states. Besides the America Mid-America Regional Emmy Award, Randhawa has received the Excellence in Journalism award from DePaul University; the 2013 World Sikh Award for her political reporting; and the 2014 School Bell Award for her educational reporting. Winning the World Sikh Award in South Carolina was a huge milestone for the passionate journalist. “I had just come out of an anchoring job in South Dakota where I made very little money. I had many doubts about whether I’d made the right decision for my career. That’s when I started receiving amazing support from Sikh and Indian communities around the globe. It eventually led me to London where I won the Sikh Award.” With the changing media industry, Randhawa thinks the industry has to work harder than ever to gain the public’s trust. “This means we have to be more transparent in our reporting. Gone are the days when people blindly trusted what their television news anchor was reading to them. In investigative reporting, that means showing our research and findings in a compelling, transparent way and reporting accurate, clear information,” she concludes. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) NOVEMBER: You are industrious this month! You’re setting yourself high standards because you want to be healthier plus efficient and productive at work. This is fortunate because everything begins with a motivation. And what better motivation than to be the best that you can be? Grab every chance to travel if it comes your way.

DECEMBER: You will need more sleep this month even though you are ambitious, and giving everything your best shot. Colleagues at work are supportive, which is fortunate because delays, silly errors and misplaced paperwork are maddening. Fortunately, a good friend is by your side. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) NOVEMBER: It’s your turn to play, flirt and entertain! Make sure you have something fun and exciting to wear this month. Socialize extensively. Venus at the top of your chart promotes relations with bosses, parents, VIPs and even the police. A flirtation with someone in authority is likely. Caution about hemorrhaging money. Go easy.

DECEMBER: Your focus on home and family is strong.

DECEMBER: Two opposing energies are at play this month.

Nevertheless, be patient with a partner who might be annoying. Patience is the antidote to anger. Look around you so you can appreciate the beauty of your daily surroundings. Take time to reflect on how much love there is in your world.

One invites you to take a backseat and work behind the scenes. You want to be low-key and ponder what your new year (birthday to birthday) will bring. The opposing energy makes you strident, forthright and aggressive when talking to others. You will say what you mean and mean what you say! (Oh my.)

However, your primary thrust this month is that you want to enlighten someone. You have something to say and you intend to say it! LUCKY DAYS: NOVEMBER 4, 5 DECEMBER 1, 2, 3, 29, 30

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) NOVEMBER: Did you know that Scorpio rules magnets? This is why you are so charismatic, you can magnetize people and situations to you! (Especially this month.) Be patient with financial delays because cheques in the mail will be late. Home is frenzied and chaotic. Many of you are quietly enjoying a secret love affair. You know who you are.

Grab every chance to travel for pleasure because this will please you. You can also pursue opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine and the law. Enjoy old friends who are back in your world.

DECEMBER: This is a lovely month for you because you’re popular with friends and successful with groups and clubs to which you belong. Meanwhile, romance is affectionate and memorable!

DECEMBER: In some ways, this is the most powerful month of the year for you because you are burning with energy and drive and this quality (which is an advantage) coincides with the fact that your reputation is shining in the eyes of bosses, parents and VIPs. You are the golden child! This is why you can travel for pleasure. Everyone is convinced you deserve it. And you do. LUCKY DAYS: NOVEMBER 16, 17 DECEMBER 13, 14, 15

CANADIAN SHARE THEIR IMMIGRANTS STORIES

Meet the

Purewal FAmily

BY PETRINA D'SOUZA Divinder Singh Purewal & Usha Purewal work at a large Canadian corporation

D

ivinder moved with his wife Usha and kids to British Columbia, Canada, from the United Kingdom in 2005. Having family and relatives based in Canada, Divinder first visited Canada in 1991 and fell in love with the lifestyle, the scenery and the fact that people are so much more relaxed in Canada than they are in the UK. “I wanted a better life for myself and my kids and be in a place where most people who live there are from somewhere else so we are more equal,” shares Divinder. On arrival, Divinder and his family lived at his younger brother’s house. “My brother and sister-in-law were very gracious and hospitable and looked after us very well.” They lived there for about four months before buying their own place. Having close family and a place to reside in after the major move was beneficial as it allowed the new immigrant family “to settle into life very slowly and with the support and encouragement of family.”

“Do your homework before you apply to emigrate. Look at what skills and experience you can offer and see if they relate to what Canada needs and if not, retrain before you arrive. As work will take up most of your day so you need to think about that and enjoy what you do for a living.” With a lot of family support in place and previous visits to Canada, the Purewals didn’t take long to adjust to their new life. Divinder states that they were settled within the first six months. “We were lucky as our kids were only 8 1/2 and 5 1/2 when we came here so they made friends quickly and we were able to make a circle of friends from their friends’ parents fairly soon, which helped us to settle in to our new life,” he adds. The transition was smooth but during the initial days Divinder would

miss the life he lived in his old country. “Although we only moved 5,000 miles away and to a country where we spoke their language, and had relatives in place, you still miss family and friends even TV shows that were familiar and you only remember the good times!” he says. Getting a job in Canada was a lot tougher than Divinder anticipated. Holding a graduate degree with 12 years of experience in human resources as a recruiter, he assumed that his UK experience along with academics, personality and language skills would be directly relevant in Canada. “But it became increasingly frustrating as I was told I didn’t have the much needed “Canadian experience.” When I did get a job it was at least two levels behind where I’ve been in England,” recalls the recruiter who currently works for a large corporation. The Purewal family loves the fact that Canada is open to newcomers and allows everyone to retain their cultural values whilst defining what being Canadian means to oneself. “If you have drive, ambition and enthusiasm then you can have a great life in Canada. One of my proudest days was when we received our citizenship for Canada” expresses Divinder who considers himself lucky to have a great home life, a very supportive wife and immediate family, secure employment and a job he loves. “I feel the future is very bright. Both my kids are in further education and I feel they have more opportunities in Canada than they would in many other countries.” Divinder has documented his adventurous ride to Canada in his debut book titled, “Oh Canada?” “When we came to Canada I started to write a book about our journey moving from England. After 12 years I finished the book and I’m proud to say that it was published in February 2018 and has received many great reviews on Amazon,” says the cheerful author.

BIGGEST OBSTACLE FACED SO FAR IN CANADA: I think the biggest obstacle to anyone making Canada their adopted country is appreciating that your experience, be it academic or work-related from the “old country,” may not correspond with a similar career in Canada. I also feel that if you stay within the confines of your own ‘cultural comfort zone’ and don’t make an attempt to integrate into the wider fabric of Canadian life then you won’t fully appreciate all that this great country has to offer.

RESOLUTIONS MADE FOR YOURSELF OR FAMILY: Never give up in the pursuit of what makes you and your family happy. Try to always appreciate that as an immigrant, even 13 years on, you have to make the effort to create friendships as you’re the new guy!

ADVICE FOR IMMIGRANTS: Do your homework before you apply to emigrate. Look at what skills and experience you can offer and see if they relate to what Canada needs and if not, retrain before you arrive. I say that as work will take up most of your day so you need to think about that and enjoy what you do for a living.

MEMORIES OF YOUR HOMELAND: I remember summer lasting about five days but having much better candy and cookies in England, especially the chocolate!
