Today’s journalist is expected to be a reporter, photographer, and videographer, as well as an editor and producer of stories…they have to be masters of technology as well as skillful story tellers who must continually update and repurpose their content for platform agnostic delivery on social media, broadcast and print.

While there have been many, I would say the work we did on exposing the social scourge of abandoned brides, who have become victims of cultural fraud in India would fit this bill [of most memorable work]. Our comprehensive work in Canada and India that led to

BY PETRINA D’SOUZA 1 You are the first Asian-Canadian to be awarded the Jack Webster Foundation’s 2019 Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award. What does this honour mean to you?

I am honoured to receive this award. It is a special privilege for me to be the first Canadian of Asian descent to get it. I hope it will serve to further illustrate the immigrant experience and as an inspiration for new Canadians in journalism.

2 What is the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award and who is it usually given to?

international coverage and accolades has led to changes in the law that is beginning to see some impact.” 4 Your reporting on the murder of Jaswinder (Jassi) Sidhu has been greatly followed. What are your thoughts on the result your coverage has led to?

7 Is there anything that today’s media industry lacks?

Two things come to mind here, one is isolation and the other is leadership. Without brick and mortar newsroom settings where journalists can bounce ideas and rub off each other constantly, many tend to work remotely and alone. This has led to fewer investigative features where teams work together. I am a big believer that an editor is as good as his or her reporter and vice-versa. Many a time newsroom conflicts arise from editors not knowing what it takes to get, do and deliver story packages, because they have not done it themselves. In many cases, senior editors in larger operations are not digital natives and do not have experience in what we refer to as backpackjournalism. In other cases, newer online news portals tend to have managers who are primarily digital natives and who are more interested in likes or shares on social media channels rather than the depth of the content.

8 It is unfortunate that the rise of online media has led to the fall of print media. As a long-time I never met this young woman who was so full of love and journalist, do you ever feel that print media will murdered because of it. But today, after 10 trips to India, make a comeback in the future?

I have pursued this story for over 18 years and I hope one day soon there will be Justice for Jassi. 5 What projects are you working on at the moment?

One of the bigger projects now is a potential Netflix series on the Jassi murder case and my other work in India including dowry-related contract killings and the plight of abandoned brides. I also continue to consult with international companies on media issues. 6 How do you see present journalism and media industry as compared to your past experience?

This is one industry that has seen tremendous changes over the last generation. When I started, your principal tools were

It recognizes the careers of senior reporters and editors who have received distinction in their communities for work of long-lasting significance, clarity, fairness and innovation. Recipients of this award are chosen by the Jack Webster Foundation Board of Directors. The outstanding career of Bruce Hutchison from 1918 to 1992, is a primary guide in reviewing potential candidates for the award.

When TV arrived, they said it is the death of radio. When the Internet took hold, they said it was the death of the newspaper. But there is a resurgence in print now as people want to cut through the digital noise and constant flow of ads and information. The resurgence of print will also appeal to people who increasingly want a tactility…to hold and feel what they are reading. I believe there will be a comeback especially in niche publications. Traditional newspapers and magazines created online editions to increase their reach. Now many online-only media operations are printing weekly or monthly editions to enhance their credibility quotient and show not everyone should be a publisher. 9 There are more and more South Asians in the media industry today, what do you have to say about this growing change and representation?

This is a good thing and not just only for South Asians but for all minority groups. The increasing presence of South Asian personalities in mainstream media helps influence the public image of minorities. It helps dispel stereotyping and promotes views which are not adequately reflected in public discourse. Immigration is a defining feature of Canada and new Canadians, mostly from Asia, currently represent one in five people in Canada. My hope is one day that statistic is reflected in our newsroom diversity counts.

3 Can you talk about your most memorable

work till date as a journalist?

Journalism is not about colour. It’s about courage. It’s not about where you come from, it’s where you are going. Use your ethnicity for context not conflict. Ultimately good journalism is not just about reflecting what is going on around you, it’s about using journalism as a vehicle for social change.

aneet Bains is one of the best and brightest young distance runners in the country. After winning three gold medals at the 2018 Fraser Valley Track and Field championships, she competed for Canada at the 2019 Pan-American U20

Championships. Bains started running competitively in grade seven. From there she joined the Universal Athletics club before shifting to Coastal Track in grade 10 to focus on distance running. It was at Coastal that she was introduced to steeplechase by her coach Scott Kent. Her interest in steeplechase grew but her toughest obstacle was getting over the water pit jump. After a lot of hard work and mental effort, Bains was able to grow her confidence and land over the pit. This led to her making the national team in grade 11. Bains ran in the 2,000 metres steeplechase at provincials, and then went on to compete in the 3,000 metres at the

U20 Pan-Am games in Costa Rica. It was an under-20 team, so she was one of the youngest people there. The older athletes were very kind and influential, not just with the games but also giving sage advice for school as well. Bains recalls how “the entire trip was amazing, I will never forget it. My family came too so it was pretty awesome to have that support.” This experience had Bains feeling a great deal of pride and excitement for the Championships. She also came out of this event with a strengthened commitment to the sport as she progressed in her career. Talking about her passion for athletics, Bains mentions that following her sister and trying to keep up with the older sibling helped build her stamina. She also recognized her role in other sports, especially soccer, contributing to her athletic ability. Additionally, her parents were very influential and encouraged their daughters to participate in sports. Bains is very grateful for all that her family has done to encourage her on.

Baneet with her father Sarbjit Bains The gold-medalist received a scholarship to the University of San Francisco where she competes in crosscountry and track. She has a great deal of respect for her coaches. The city of San Francisco itself has also had a profound effect on Bains. She describes it as a great place to explore with a lot of fun trails and runs for her to do as well. Sharing some insight on her training, Bains explains “it definitely makes a difference to combine the learning I received earlier in my career and what I am getting now to really add to my game.” This scholarship also means entering the world of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The international season in summer delayed her preparation for NCAA so Bains will be redshirting the cross-country season this year. The NCAA is highly competitive and requires rigorous training regiments for athletes. Bains has already seen the big step up from high school to collegiate competition and is ready for the road ahead. As a student, Bains is pursuing a major in psychology and minor in sociology. Her dream for now is to obtain a master’s degree in counselling and become a high school counsellor. However, this earlier in her degree, she knows anything can happen and is prepared to take on any challenges on her way to completing her education. This season, the young athlete’s goal is to cut down her steeplechase time by working on technique and endurance. She also wants to make the World Juniors this year and place in the top two for all of Canada in 3,000 metres steeplechase. Right now, Bains knows she has to “take it one week at a time and build up to these major goals. I have a lot of faith in my coaches and myself to go out there and continuously get better.” She wants to instill these values of hard work and accomplishments in sport in the South Asian community. Bains can be a major influence and role model for South Asian girls in sports as someone to look up to and believe that they can achieve great things in the world of sports. “I want to give them passion and confidence that they can accomplish anything in sport if they put their work into it.” Bains is an elite athlete with a sharp mind; she is definitely one to watch as she makes waves in the world of sport.

AN EXCEPTIONAL ARTIST BY JASKIRAT SAHNI

haranjeet Singh Mand, a 26-year-old artist and one of CBC’s Top 30 Under 30 Hottest Classical Musicians of 2019, has made many historic records with his exceptional gift of playing the sitar. He was the first Indian classical musician in history to give a solo performance at the Juno Awards in 2018, and also performed for the Prime Ministers of India and Canada in 2015 in Vancouver, during PM Narendra Modi’s visit. It all started as a challenge to prove himself of being capable of pursuing music, but soon Mand found himself delving deeper and deeper into the art of playing sitar, to the point where he “knew that

this was what [he] was looking for, and that the sitar is what made life complete.” Music was not part of Mand’s childhood; in fact he was more of a studious child growing up. Belonging to a military family, he spent the first 15 years of his life as a student interested in studying science. However, upon taking music as an elective and being told that music was not meant for him, Mand stepped into the musical world in 2008 and found that it was his calling. He recalls, “Only since I started pursuing music did I experience real depth in life. In our daily lives, we have tasks we need to do, but there is always a quest for a deeper purpose in life, where you will find lasting

contentment. I found this through music.” Mand’s first performance was at the age of 16 at the Mother Teresa Homage Concert in New Delhi, India.

The sitar has been around for centuries, and is known to be a very versatile instrument, as it has many forms in which it can be played. Mand plays a form called Vilayatkhani, and has been a pupil of well-known sitar maestro Pandit Harvinder Sharma for 10 years. In this form, the sitar is played as though the music is being sung, and thus is meant to be mimicking the human voice. Through the sitar, Mand has gained a greater understanding of Indian folk traditions, spiritual and devotional music, and many other genres of music. Growing up, the sitar player recalls having a “peculiar taste in music, including opera and western classical music which was mostly unheard of in India at the time.” Mand’s curiosity and love for all forms of music has lead him to be the first ever sitarist to play Aria Opera ‘Ave Maria’ on sitar. Currently, Mand lives in Surrey, BC, and has been teaching music,

delivering lectures for various institutions such as the University of British Columbia and the University of Fraser Valley, travelling internationally to perform, and composing his own music. “Life has been adventurous with music and has given me a unique perspective on existence. Mand has started an organization called Gurukul Canada, to give people a platform to learn and grow their passion for music. STEERING THROUGH OBSTACLES

Shaan is the first person in Canada to drive using the state-of-the-art electronic Swiss driving system, which allows people with minimal muscle strength to control a vehicle with a single joystick.

rom as long as he can remember, 22-year old UBC Sauder School of Business student, Shaan Lail, has had a fascination with cars. Seeing his cousins’ classic Mustangs and parents’ Mercedes, he often longed for the day that he would be able to take on the steering wheel. Unlike others who share a similar passion for automobiles, Lail’s journey to the road came with many twists, turns and challenges to overcome.

At age six, Lail was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a neuromuscular condition that results in progressive weakening and breakdown of muscles over time. DMD affects about one in 3,500 boys. The disease is present from birth, but its effects manifest later and gradually. Despite Lail’s parents’ best efforts – his mom is a medical doctor – and seeking treatments and participating in clinical trials at various universities all over the world, Lail’s disease

progressed slowly over the years. He could walk and do all daily activities, but at the age of 17, his muscles had weakened to the point where he transitioned from walking to being in a power wheelchair. Despite the disease, he still excelled at everything he did. Lail was the top academic student in his high school graduation class and very active in school events. He was accepted into UBC, his parents’ alma mater; his mother

graduated in Medicine and father in Engineering. With this change of being in a wheelchair, Lail noticed a shift in people’s perception and reluctance to interact normally, “Some people aren’t used to having someone different around them. I intentionally made an effort to make myself approachable.” Lail still wanted to pursue his passion for cars, but given the available options, the prospect of driving looked bleak. He was left wondering if he would ever be able to drive. With determination and optimism, Lail did not give up. He researched and got in touch with rehabilitation driving specialist Dean Robertson, who worked with Lail and followed with a new development called Joysteer, a new Swiss electronic driving system for those with physical disabilities. This development could potentially allow Lail to fulfill his dream of driving. He persevered and there was no looking back, as Lail then went on to become the first person in Canada to drive using the state-of-theart electronic Swiss driving system, which allows people with minimal muscle strength to control a vehicle with a single joystick!

For Lail, the main attraction point of Joysteer is its suitability for people with various disabilities; it is easily adjusted as abilities change. From start to finish, it took more than two years for the system installation and software testing. The project was an international effort: the vehicle was purchased in Canada, the ramp system was installed in the US, the Joysteer system is from Switzerland, software was developed and supported from Israel, and finally, the system installation was completed in Canada by Alliance Mobility. Living a dream come true with being able to drive, Lail has gained greater independence, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like being independent with driving as it expands the possibilities of what I can do in life. I am no longer relying on my family for rides. At a certain age, you do not want your parents to be waiting while you go out with friends or having to pick you up from school and back home. Driving gives me more flexibility â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and I love driving for others too!â&#x20AC;? That said, while he values the independence, Lail adds that strong unwavering support from his family was key in shaping him into the individual he is today. Lail also appreciates the support that he has gotten from the health care system, but adds that existing regulations and facilities do not fully consider individuals driving from their wheelchair. Because driving is considered not â&#x20AC;&#x153;medically necessary,â&#x20AC;? there is not enough awareness and support for people with physical disabilities who do want to drive. With little monetary support available from governmental and health care sources, Lail is thankful that his family could afford to pay a total of almost $200,000 out-of-pocket to enable him to drive his own specialized vehicle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The healthcare system and social support system did not fail; it just isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t prepared,â&#x20AC;? adds Lail. Regardless, this is just the beginning for Lail. Currently on the cusp of graduation from UBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sauder School of Business, Lail doubles as a fourth-year student and Teaching Assistant for a Business Communication course, through which he assists other students in learning how to be better communicators. After receiving his Bachelor of Commerce degree, his plan is to work for a year and then go to Law School with an interest in Corporate Law. Lailâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story serves as an inspiration to not only take on lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenges with determination and positivity, but also to drive through with full speed in utilizing them to become strengths rather than setbacks. Shining light on his message to other disabled individuals and youth, Lail shares, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would say give everything a chance and never give up on your dreams. Gautam has been a runner-up in the Bobbie Steen Legacy Award from the Canadian Association of Women in Sport and Physical Activity. She has won an Excellence in Clinical Award from the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association and Athletic Therapy BC.

As the very first woman support staff of an IPL team, Gautam is breaking down barriers and making her mark in the sports world with her outstanding talent and work ethic.

my work and making this experience memorable for me. The entire tournament was amazing, I am very grateful!” In 2012, Gautam started a charity called “Hoops for India” which gives under-privileged kids a chance to play basketball. It started out in local villages in Punjab with two locations in Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur. After visiting India several times in her youth, Gautam saw how the physical education programs in India weren’t good enough. She hoped to make some change and encourage fitness programs through the week. Another goal was to promote sports for girls as well as boys and encourage the sporting lifestyle for all genders. The young founder shares that her dream for the program is “to build a sports school that involves all sports for under-privileged children and develop a Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD) model for young kids.” It hasn’t been easy for Gautam at all during her journey. When she first went to India she explained how “it was challenging for me to sell myself for what I do as an athletic therapist. But through patience and persistence, I was able to make it through.” She was a guest speaker at the 2019 Indian Association of Sports Medicine Conference where she presented the topic of athletic therapists and what they do. All this could not have happened without the love and support of Gautam’s family, friends and teachers. She has many to thank for her move to Bangalore, and many who have helped her adjust in her first year overseas. Gautam is playing a prominent role in sports medicine and her work will speak for itself as she progresses in her field.

Madhavji and Sasan’s energy and witty sense of humour kept the guests engaged and entertained. Many known figures and celebrities from within the community and British Columbia graced the occasion with their presence. Spotted at the event were BC Minister of Citizens’ Services Jinny Sims; MPs Randeep Sarai and Sukh Dhaliwal; MLAs Stephanie Cadieux, Bruce Ralston and Marvin Hunt, among others; Surrey Councillors Mandeep Nagra, Brenda Locke and Jack Singh Hundial; and Surrey RCMP Superintendent Maxine Schwartz. The entertainment segment was something new and different and the guests were in for a treat. With lights all dim, glow-in-the-dark dancers kicked off the closing entertainment segment with a high-energy bhangra performance. Glow sticks were distributed among the attendees and they enthusiastically used it to welcome the main entertainer Sharry Maan on stage. Maan’s popular tracks got everyone dancing through the night. The singer made the young and the old come on the dance floor. With his infectious energy and foot tapping songs, he entertained and got guests dancing at DARPAN Awards.

Dr. Sakena Yacoobi is the founder and executive director of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), the Professor Sakena Yacoobi Private Hospital in Herat, the Professor Sakena Yacoobi Private High Schools in Kabul and Herat, and the radio station Meraj in Herat Province, Afghanistan. She is also the co-founder and Vice-President of Creating Hope International, a Michigan-based non-profit organization. Dr. Yacoobi founded AIL in 1995 to provide teacher training to Afghan women, to support education for boys

and girls, and to provide health education to women and children. The organization empowers women and communities to find ways to bring education and health services to rural and urban poor girls, women and other disenfranchised and poor Afghans. Dr. Yacoobi has received international recognition for AIL and its achievements. Dr. Yacoobi was among the 1,000 women jointly nominated to receive the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. She has received the Democracy Award from the National Endowment for Democracy; the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship; the Americans for UNFPA Board of Advocates Award for the Health and Dignity of Women; and Afghan National Peace Award, among many others.

In Honour of Your Extraordinary Contribution as a South Asian Visual Artist Sandeep Johal is a Canadian visual artist. Her colourful geometric forms and intricate black-and-white line work is aesthetically and conceptually inspired by her South Asian heritage. Johal believes in the power of art to create awareness around issues related to cultural identity, gender equality, and human rights. Her art practice is an expression of her social and cultural concerns, particularly gender justice. Her most recent series, She Left Only To Come Back (2019) is an exploration of femininity, motherhood, inter-generational

trauma and loss set against a backdrop of familial obligation and self-sacrifice. Johal has completed a number of public projects, most recently, a community mural project with Vancouver Mural Festival that involved the denaming of a federal building, and murals commissioned by the Vancouver Art Gallery in conjunction with Moving Still: Performative Photography In India. Her work has been featured in CBC Arts, Vancouver’s CTV Morning Live, the Vancouver Sun, The Georgia Straight, Gray Magazine and other print and online publications.

Joban Bal is a first year medical student at UBC and the President and Founder of One Blood For Life Foundation, a blood and stem cell donation organization. The team of One Blood Foundation is a group of youth, along with advisors that include the top executives at Canadian Blood Services, researchers at UBC, doctors and nurses at many of the hospitals in the region, and the community of Canadians that he started the organization to help strengthen. The Foundation currently has over 400 active volunteers across BC, primarily in the Lower Mainland region. The team has recruited over 1,550 new stem cell donors to the Canadian Stem cell registry and over 3,400 blood donation, mostly youth. Bal was awarded the Top 25 Under 25 in 2017, and was awarded a national service award at the Honouring Our Lifeblood event in Ottawa the same year. Bal has been awarded numerous academic and leadership awards at UBC such as the trek excellence scholarship; Dean of Science scholarship; and BC Children’s Hospital Research Award for his research contributions with the BC Children’s Hospital. Bal is a Wesbrook Scholar at UBC, an HSBC Emerging Leader Premier Award Recipient, a medical researcher at St. Paul’s Hospital, and UBC MD Candidate for 2023.

Steve Rai is the Deputy Chief Constable at Vancouver Police Department (VPD). He has been a member of the VPD since 1990. Deputy Rai started his career by garnering extensive operational experience, including eight years as a patrol constable in District Three, where his patrol duties encompassed field training and mentoring new police officers. He completed a second operational tour in District One, including managing the Davie Street Community Policing Office, where he collaborated with local community leaders, business owners and volunteers to address neighbourhood crime and order issues, and other major assignments and duties. In July 2015, he was promoted to Deputy Chief Constable of Support Services. Deputy Rai is a Board member and Director-at-Large of the Vancouver Police Historical Society and Centennial Museum. He is the recipient of a Chief Constable’s Commendation for “courage and professionalism,” and two Chief Constable Unit Citations. In 2013, he was the recipient of the Khalsa Diwan Society Exemplary Community Service Award.

India’s World Cup victory in 2011 inspired him to take up cricket. Since 2018, he has been playing for the U-19 Canadian National Cricket Team and for the Newton Surrey Elite team. In June 2019, the Newton Surrey Elite team won the champion’s title and $20,000 in Big Bash – a premium cricket competition in western Canada. Walia was the Most Valuable Player for the tournament. In July, his U-19 Canadian team won the qualifiers for playing in the U-19 Cricket World Cup scheduled for January 2020 in South Africa. Walia wants to see Canada recognized as one of the best cricket playing nations in the world.

Dave Mann is the President and Founder of Isle of Mann Property Group. Mann founded the Mannkind Charitable Society (MCS), in 2009, to promote the welfare of orphaned children, provide free food to the needy both locally and abroad, and to foster green initiatives. Mannkind works in partnership with other registered charities to advance music and arts education, help the poor and increase environmental awareness by expanding green spaces in cities. MCS is involved in many philanthropic projects; some of which include providing free surgical procedures to children with physical disabilities or deformities in India, helping the environment by planting

trees in developing nations and in BC parks, helping orphans within impoverished parts of developing nations and providing free food to the homeless residents of Vancouverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Downtown Eastside. The organization works in conjunction with Costco and every weekend MCS provides about $2,000 worth of grocery to various homeless shelters. Through Kidscan, Mannkind operates a 14-bed paediatric palliative care center in New Delhi, India, which supports children with cancer who cannot afford a regular hospital for palliative care. The Kidscan palliative center provides grief counselling to families, and entertainment and activities for the children. MCS has funded and operates orphanage facilities within the Balagurukulam Orphanage located in Chennai, India.

The Shan-E-Punjab Arts Club was founded in 2008 by a group of passionate bhangra and giddha devotees, all of whom have countless years of practice and knowledge under their belt. The joint passion of culture, heritage and musical art came together to create this flourishing academy. Shan-E-Punjab is one of the top bhangra and giddha academies in North America. They have performed at competitions in Los Angeles, Boston, Detroit, Calgary, Edmonton, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

The Club is a space where the students receive technical and energetic instruction, positive reinforcement, personal attention and quality mentorship. The academy helps its students build confidence, learn key life skills and nurture lifelong friendships. The academy seeks to preserve and promote the folk dances of Punjab in North America through performance, education and community outreach. They are committed to encouraging and nurturing an appreciation and love for dances in every folk dance enthusiast.

Dr. Naranjan Dhallaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, Romel, receives the Industry Marvel award from Gurvinder Hundal and Ramneek Dhillon of DARPAN Magazine Dr. Naranjan Dhalla is a distinguished Professor at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He served for 19 years as Founding Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg. He has been working in the field of experimental cardiology with a focus on pathophysiology and pharmacology of cardiac dysfunction. He was one of the first investigators to identify membrane defects during the development of heart disease. He has published 819 full-length papers, which have been cited more than 26,000 times, in addition to editing 56 books. He has been the Executive Director of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences, which he founded in 1996 for promoting cardiovascular education and prevention of heart disease. Dr. Dhalla has received 197 honours and awards, including six honorary doctorate degrees and four Honoris Causa Professorships from different Institutions. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Member of the Order of Canada, Member of the Order of Manitoba, and Inductee into the Winnipeg Citizens Hall of Fame. He has been named for induction into the 2019 Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

he world as we know it today is a place that is ever so diverse in the life forms that it sustains and is ever changing, because in nature nothing really ever stays the same. Humans, who are the most intelligent species on earth are contributing the most to changes in the earth’s environment, especially since the onset of the Industrial Revolution. As humans, the world around us is changing so fast that some of us find it difficult to keep up, because our life is all based on technology and scientific advancements.

Together, all of these developments are taking a toll on Mother Nature, and that is happening because of a lack of public policy on how much pollution we all can put into our environment. But fear not, because today’s young people can change all of this. People that are now in their early to late 20s and 30s will experience global warming like no generation before them, but subsequently we will also have to come up with the best

solutions to stop it and reverse its effects. Many might see this as an uphill battle, due to presumed maturity levels of young people and the time constrain that we have for dealing with this issue. As a planet, we only have a few more years left to deal with climate change and the only way we can do this is by demanding our politicians to create public policy that effectively protects our environment and keeps our planet healthy and habitable for future generations. Young people must communicate with our local politicians (including Members of Legislative Assembly and Members of Parliament) by writing letters and emails to them that show how deeply concerned we are about this, and that we stand with the politicians that will take strong action against climate change. Not only that, but we must also attend political events and public gatherings to show support for political action on climate change and talk about this in the public realm. Past generations have effectively done this before to shape our political and social climate to what it is today, but today’s young people must go beyond that, for if we do not act today, we may not have a habitable planet we can call home tomorrow.

ew things have changed as much in recent decades as post-secondary education for women. When I graduated from medical school in the 1970s, I was an outlier. Women were a minority in university, and rare in the professions. Yet 33 per cent more women than men graduated from American colleges in 2012, and that figure is expected to increase to 47 per cent by 2023. The trends in Canada are comparable. The implications of this shift are profound, and affect women not only in their professional lives but, inevitably, in the personal sphere, as well. I was curious to learn what attitudes, beliefs and expectations todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well-educated, high-achieving young women took into their relationships and family

lives. Presumably they wanted to feel wanted and loved, like everyone else, but where did they go looking to find prospective partners and what did they value in those prospects? I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know, so I asked. My informal survey of 10 women found that nine considered family gatherings to be the preferred opportunity for seeking partners, followed at some distance by work and internet dating sites. Dates arranged by parents and blind dates were at the bottom of the list. That these young women trust family and work environments suggests that they are looking for partners with similar experiences and values to their own without their being too familiar (arranged matches) or too random (blind dates). As for the attributes young women seek in a mate, the following words came up again and again: empathetic, kind, compassionate, respectful and loyal. These were followed by secondary attributes such as ambition, work ethic, and motivation. A good job, good looks and fitness

The women want to be treated as equals in their relationships, with an equal distribution of domestic tasks. They spoke of an expectation that their mates be available both emotionally and physically. were in the ‘nice to have’ rather than the ‘must have’ columns. At the same time, there were clear attributes that high-achieving young women did not want in a mate. Controlling and aggressive behaviours were huge turn offs, followed by narcissism, self-absorption, and arrogance. When these women spoke of their expectations of a partner, they thought he should be true to himself, respectful of himself, his family and his ethnic roots. The women want to be treated as equals in their relationships, with an equal distribution of domestic tasks. They spoke of an expectation that their mates be available both emotionally and physically, and that they make the effort to be open and communicative. It wasn’t all seriousness. The women also expected that their partners have a sense of humour and a sense of adventure. Those do not seem like impossible expectations but they are more difficult than they might appear. Men have expectations of

relationships, too. As more women have been succeeding in university, men have been struggling and losing their dominance in the workplace. This can lead to their need to feel dominant at home, which might engender the controlling and aggressive behaviours women consider a huge turn off. A New York Times report showed that millennial men were more likely than the previous generation to want a stay-at-home wife. Also, a number of surveys have shown that the relative earning-power and career success of high-achieving women can lead to unhappiness at home. A University of Chicago report found that in marriages where a wife earned more than her husband, divorce rates increased. Another study found that a man who was financially dependent on his partner was more likely to cheat. I take it as a positive that the young women I interviewed are searching for mates in family settings. Cross-cultural marriages are increasingly common today, and many of them work, but they can also lead to clashes. In fact, culture and ethnic upbringing seem to be one of the factors that confer vulnerability for domestic abuse. The women I spoke with seem to appreciate the need for shared values and experiences. There is no turning back the clock on women advancing in education, job status, and financial achievements, and their expectations of relationships are entirely legitimate. We hope that they find happiness but, at the same time, all of us have both an opportunity and a responsibility to make young women aware of how to navigate the minefields of their new social realities.

As the community expanded, Rostom propelled on her mission to build representation of hijabi women in non-conventional spaces such as sports gear. In an interview with The Student Newspaper, Rostom mentions, “So, my

I was bullied by a society that was making me feel uncomfortable because of my personal choices to exercise faith by covering up.” Later in 2018, Rostom won the Facebook Community Leadership Award and won $50,000 USD to enhance the activities of her group and lead her Facebook community efficiently through the required resources. “The first time I stood on stage I was so emotional I cried. I honestly don’t know how I did it, but I received a standing ovation from the 5,000 people in the audience. I was so honoured to be there amongst people who didn’t necessarily know anything about me or my religion, yet still really got behind me,” Rostom told Harper’s Bazaar Arabia. A major milestone for this trailblazer was the climb to Everest Base Camp this year. She invited members from Surviving Hijab to join her in this expedition and the response was phenomenal. Women of different age-groups from all over the world joined Rostom in the two-week adventure. “People don’t get it, they don’t understand. I want to change the false perceptions that assume hijabi women are boring and uneducated, women who don’t play sport or travel. I am hoping by reaching base camp of the highest mountain

It is quite apparent that a more plant-based diet would decrease the number of animals being killed, but the indirect benefits of this might not be as obvious. There is a reduction in greenhouse emissions, since some animals release methane gas which helps with greenhouse gases, and it also takes less energy to transport and preserve plants than meat. There is also a reduction in fossil fuel for the same reasons (less transport and preservation). Lastly, by choosing more plants over meat in diets, water use is decreased, since animals kept in captivity for processing would normally be taking more water. For most people, switching over from a meat-heavy platter to a plantbased one can have an adjustment period. Plant-based diet can vary from person to person, but mostly they focus on minimized processed foods, limiting animal products, and increasing intake of plant sources foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, seeds and nuts. This means a reduction in fast food, desserts, refined grains, packaged food, and processed meat. There are many tips and tricks to transitioning into this lifestyle. For instance, instead of eliminating certain foods, it might be more worthwhile to find the plantbased substitutes instead. If you must have take-out or fast food, choose the ‘veggie’ alternatives to many meat dishes. Another hack is tofu. According to Joe, tofu from soybeans, is not only “one of the best sources for plant-based protein as it contains all the essential amino acids [needed] for health,” but it is also “naturally low in saturated fats, [and] cholesterol.” All in all, for all these reasons, and many more, it might be worthwhile to switch to a more ethical, healthy way of eating.

Preparation

• ¼ cup Greek yogurt • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste • 1 tsp red chilli powder • ¼ tsp ground turmeric • ½ tsp garam masala • Juice of 1 lemon • Salt to taste • 12 medium shrimp, cleaned • 2 tbsps butter (melted) • 1 tsp mustard oil • ½ tsp red pepper flakes • Chaat masala spice mix • 2 tsps chopped cilantro leaves (for garnish)

• In a large bowl, combine the first six ingredients, add salt to taste. Add shrimp, toss to coat. Refrigerate for about three hours.

• Preheat the oven to 350˚C on a baking sheet, toss the marinated shrimp with the melted butter, mustard oil, red pepper flakes, and a generous pinch of chaat masala.

• Bake until cooked, for five minutes or so. If you prefer not to use the oven, you can sear the shrimp on a hot pan.

• Garnish with cilantro and freshly squeezed lime, serve hot.

While the above can assist in immediate help, the fix is temporary. Undoubtedly, stigma is the biggest problem for someone dealing with anxiety. Acceptance begins from the self. If anxiety persists as an ongoing issue that interferes with your ability to perform daily tasks, it is time to evaluate yourself. Reflect on your lifestyle to see if you are getting enough sleep, consuming moderate levels of caffeine, connecting with loved ones and exercising regularly. Once you complete the internal checklist, seek help from external sources – and they do not necessarily implicate medication. Walia describes a common approach used by professionals known as cognitive-behaviour therapy which equips one with tools that can empower an individual to become better versions of themselves (i.e. apps). The behavioural element involves tackling specific behaviours to identify toxic thinking patterns and irrational beliefs. Just as with any other condition, prevention is key and early detection is the best way to help yourself. As you set foot into the end of the year, take time to understand your feelings. You’ve probably seen them in their colourful tins and bags boasting exciting names like “Turbobooster” or “MuscleMachine,” or an array of seemingly nonsensical letters. And you might have seen other people at the gym mixing these strange powders into their water before, during, or after their workouts. So now you’re wondering — what do these fitness supplements do? And do they really work?

Let’s take a look at a few of the primary supplements and see what benefits they do or don’t have to offer.

Pre-workout aka Caffeine Fitness enthusiasts who are looking to get the most out of every workout session will often take some sort of pre-workout drink about 30 minutes before hitting the weights. Pre-workouts are intended to give you more energy as well as greater focus and endurance.

The primary ingredient in any pre-workout is good old-fashioned caffeine, which is leveraged to give you an extra boost of energy. If you’re working out hard, your body needs plenty of protein to repair and build muscle. But it can be difficult to consume enough protein via your typical diet. This is where whey protein comes in. There are a variety of different protein supplements out there, but studies have shown that whey-based protein products are the easiest for your body to utilize. It’s best to take it within an hour of working out, and if you’ve been lifting really heavy, you can maximize your muscle gain by taking a scoop before bed or right after waking up.

BCAAs Few supplements are as controversial as BranchedChain Amino Acids, otherwise known as BCAAs. Supposedly they help create the ideal conditions in your body for burning fat and building muscle, and many athletes swear by them when it comes to muscle recovery and easing soreness. That being said, there isn’t much science to support their effectiveness. Research has shown that while people who exercise do benefit from BCAAs, the reality is that the vast majority of people already get plenty of them in their diet. Chicken, beef, eggs, milk, nuts, brown rice, and a range of vegetables are all rich with BCAAs, so a lot of experts say supplements are unnecessary. That being said, there are plenty of trainers and athletes who are diehard BCAA proponents. So this might be a case where it’s worth giving it a try and seeing if it’s right for your body.

Keep in Mind… It’s important to understand that fitness supplements will not make you fit! They are there to supplement a healthy diet and promote a more effective workout routine. You can’t simply eat a ton of whey protein and build muscle. If you’re not working out enough to use all that protein, then not only will the muscles never grow, but you’ll actually gain fat due to the added calories. So eat a healthy diet, build a solid workout routine, and use supplements like these to gain an extra edge. They’re not magical — merely supplemental. he topic of body hair has been a hotly debated feminist issue for more than four decades and remains one. There’s a movement, especially among millennials, of thumbing their noses, or rather their underarm and leg hair, at a society that they insist pressures women to remove all traces of body hair — to the point of shaming women when they don’t. Even celebs have jumped on board. Madonna was one of the first back in the ‘80s, then came Julia Roberts on a red-carpet reveal, and most recently, Miley Cyrus flashed

furry pits for the press. Then there’s the flip side: Those who simply don’t find it attractive and want to be rid of it. Period. And it’s still a highly popular choice. The wide array of hair removal options are a testament to that view. But that brings us to a different conundrum. How does one choose the most effective hair removal method? There are the temporary options of depilatory creams, shaving, waxing — which offers the longestlasting results of the temporary methods — and electrolysis which is supposed to be permanent but produces mixed results. For true permanent hair removal, laser treatment is the only effective solution available and not to be confused with Intense Pulse Light (IPL). “There are a lot of spas and salons who have been marketing themselves as doing laser hair removal, except they were actually using an IPL technology,” explains

Dr. Amanda Lau, co-founder and medical director of Skinfolio in West Vancouver’s Park Royal. Dr. Lau says that IPL is actually a photo facial that removes brown spots and is helpful for rosacea. “It is good technology but it isn’t a true laser technology.” Melody Leskun, clinic manager for Ideal Image MedSpa in South Surrey, describes IPL as light therapy. “It will remove the hair temporarily, but it will come back,” she says. The laser is “going down to the blood supply and removing the hair follicle completely,” Leskun explains, which is why the hair removal is permanent. The IPL process is not only temporary but is limited to people with very fair skin and ultra-dark hair. True laser technology such as Nd:YAG laser which Skinfolio uses, while Ideal Image uses both the Nd:YAG and [dio]laze lasers, can treat a wider range of skin tones and hair shades. “With that laser we’re able to hit a very specific target which is the hair follicle at a particular phase [of growth]. Only when the hairs are growing, are they receptive to the damage,” says Dr. Lau. Leskun adds

In addition to laser hair removal being permanent, are there any other advantages? In her family medical practice, Dr. Lau has seen many patients with ingrown hairs from waxing and shaving. Both methods can also pose risk of infection. “Yes it [laser hair removal] costs more up front but you’re going to run into less risk over time. Every time you shave, every time you wax, you’ve opened up that follicle to the outside world. You’ve introduced abrasion and there’s potential for that to get infected.” With safety not an issue, it is the cost that deters many people from getting laser treatments. Both Ideal Image and Skinfolio have different payment options that can make the cost more manageable for an average budget. For an area like a bikini line, each treatment can range from $100 to $150. Ideal Image often offers special promotions too and also has a guarantee on the services. Dr. Lau acknowledges it can seem expensive but offers that a lifetime of shaving and waxing isn’t cheap either and laser hair removal doesn’t have the consequences as other methods. How do you define fashion in your own words? Fashion to me is one of the greatest forms of expression, the freedom to portray exactly who you are without ever having to use your words. There are really no boundaries or rules when it comes to fashion and I think it’s one of the most beautifully liberating ways to express yourself.

What is the inspiration behind Reign? Reign is inspired by the powerful women in the Game of Thrones. An ode to one of my favourite TV shows of all time, this collection is fierce, bold and intricately handembroidered. From beaded birds and capes, to power shoulders and dramatic silhouettes – the pieces depict flight, freedom and power. It’s all about the rise of powerful women to the top!

What has been your most memorable moment or collection till date? There have been so many exciting moments in my career so far but the biggest one would have to be my first show at Paris Fashion Week (PFW). It was an overwhelming and gratifying feeling to showcase my pieces on such a massive platform and to also receive recognition for it. I returned to PFW for the second time this September.

What is the fashion forecast for 2020? I think 2020 will be all about exaggeration. Dramatic, statement aspects of outfits like power shoulders, bows and capes will continue to take over the runway.

Vancouver is the West Coast’s premier design show. We just wrapped our 15th year, and as always, the show was full of exciting new makers, art installations, and of course, design inspiration for every taste and every budget. HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE EMERGING TRENDS:

Solid furniture with soft, curved edges rather than sharp corners is something I’ve enjoyed seeing offered more and more as of late. Stained dark black or smoky walnut are popular with solid wood furniture as are two very opposite, very light woods; white oak or ash. It’s not just curved – edged furniture with softer lines have been appealing to us all these days, archways are still delighting us and were prevalent at last year’s IDS Vancouver. This year designers have taken the trend farther. The entrance of our VIP Lounge designed by Vancouver-based firm LIV Studios had a beautiful arch as did Union Wood Co.

Natural, local materials and simple unfussy forms are a nod to the region’s natural resources. This was evident under the archway in the tunnel of Union Wood Co. with their beautiful, long table, stump stools and wood shavings. Barter’s collection of homewares was a delight. Also, Portlandbased Hew have a beautiful offering of handmade spoons and serving vessels.

Marset Follow Me lamp With real estate prices being what they are, less people are owning their homes and are in turn investing in structural upgrades. Opting for more portable lighting options that you can take with you from home to home rather than hardwiring in pendants and show-stopping chandeliers, companies with beautiful lighting solutions have launched versions of well-loved classics to better suit the growing rental market. Floor lamps and compact, powerful lighting solutions are good looking and can move with you. I adore my versatile Menu Carrie LED light that we are able to easily charge at our off the grid cabin as it uses just a USB charger. To further make my point, when we sold our home, we showed it with a Tom Dixon pendant in the dining room. Rather than write into our sale agreement that the pendant was not included in the sale of the house, we were advised to just let it go. I miss that light!. Okay, but colour and texture are a good thing too. A standout collection was by Paolo Lenti in collaboration with the popular Vancouver Showroom, Livingspace. A feast for the eyes, Paolo Lenti’s bright, bold outdoor furniture and the screen of beautifully textured, garland-like, strung fabric that housed it was show-stopping. Designing and making their own materials including the fabrics, ropes and fibres the furniture is made with, the brand did a lot of research to find the proper fibre, and then modified it for their outdoor furniture. Paola Lenti furniture, both outdoor and indoor, is known for its bright, vibrant colours. One can find pops of colour in the most delightful places and objects these days including in works by artist Dina Gonzalez Mascaro. Her vessels are organic in shape and surprisingly bold in colour..

Q: How did you meet? Shalu: We technically first met on a cruise eight years ago that both of our families were on. Though our families would never believe it, we didn’t speak much on that cruise and it wasn’t until a few years later where we started talking after Gagan came to my birthday party in Gastown. I’ve said yes! The first time was in March of 2018 when Gagan and his family came to my house and together asked for my hand in marriage, it was very sentimental and sweet. The second time was a few months later in September when we were doing our ‘Save the Date’ photoshoot, he took me completely by surprise. The third (and final) time was in India when we were wedding shopping. We all headed to Udaipur for a couple of days where Gagan had set up a “family photoshoot” at the Oberoi Udaivillas. Gagan proposed with both our families there and it was a moment I’ll never forget.

I’m sure most couples have said in the past how things go by so fast on your wedding day, but both of us did a great job on checking in on each other throughout the day to make sure we were appreciating the moment. Shalu: Both of us are very cognisant of the fact that we are very early on in our marriage so it wouldn’t be appropriate to identify what our strengths are at the moment. That being said, after being together for so long we are definitely going to integrate some principles from when we were dating to make sure our relationship brings out the best of both of us. Q: If you could provide any advice to other married couples, what would it be? Shalu: At this point, we should be the ones receiving the advice! That being said, I do think the one piece of advice we can offer to young couples is that every relationship is unique in its own way and has it’s own special circumstances with its own natural course. Gagan and I dated for six years before we were able to finally get married and live together – though it was frustrating at times spending so much time apart, we wouldn’t change it at all because it offered both of us an opportunity to grow as individuals while not having to deal with the pressures and expectations of a married couple.

o trip through Southern Spain is complete without stopping in Granada. While most travellers arrive here just to see the Alhambra, this compelling city is a destination in its own right. Seeping with centuries of history, Granada melds elaborate Islamic architecture and Arab-infused street life with monumental churches, bohemian bars, and a thriving tapas scene. Once deemed one of the greatest Islamic cities in the medieval world, Granada was the last bastion of the Moors in Spain when the Catholic monarchs captured the city in 1491. Today, this translates into a breathtaking blend of architecture and styles, most spectacularly seen in the Alhambra. If you’re planning a trip to this gritty and mystical Spanish city, prepare to leave thoroughly enchanted.

Explore the Alhambra Without a doubt, the Alhambra is one of the most visited attractions in Spain – and for good reason. Set against the Sierra Nevada mountains, this alluring palace complex dates back to the 12th century. With its Islamic décor, elegantly landscaped gardens, and spectacular 360 views of Granada, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one you shouldn’t skip. Plan ahead and book tickets well in advance as they sell out. It’s recommended to book your tickets at least two months prior to your visit, if you are travelling in high season (June–September). The complex has three main parts, which will occupy most of your day once you arrive. There’s the fortress Alcazaba, where you can see the site’s original 13th century citadel. Then there’s the Nasrid Palaces, the centerpiece of the entire complex, with its stunning facades of glazed tiles, stucco and intricately-carved wood. Finally, there are the Generalife gardens, with its sultry courtyards and pools. It’s recommended to either book a tour or rent an audio guide to make sense of this sprawling attraction, as signage is limited.

cathedral. Known for being the last resting place of Spain’s Catholic Monarchs, Isabel I de Castilla and Fernando II de Aragón, the chapel has their monumental marble tombs on display. The sacristy also hosts a small museum inside, with some impressive pieces and an art collection, which contains a masterpiece by Botticelli.

Wander around the Albayzín and Sacromonte Visit the Cathedral de Granada and Capilla Real The next day, stroll down to the heart of the city to visit the Cathedral of Granada. Built on top of a former mosque after the conquest of Granada by the Catholics, the cathedral is considered a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance style. It is surprisingly large inside, with impressive facades, a grand altar and several exquisite chapels. Audio guides are included in the price of admission (5€/adult) and direct you to some of the more important works in the building. Granada has two distinct historical neighbourhoods you should definitely add to your list. The Albayzín is Granada’s Moorish district, full of winding cobblestone streets and steep hills, where you’ll catch glimpses of whitewashed caremenes (mansions with walled gardens). It’s an ideal place to spend a relaxed afternoon; just wander around, soak in the distinct

atmosphere or stop at a teashop. You’ll also find a lot of medina-style stalls here if you’re looking to pick up a souvenir or two. For some Instagramworthy views of the Alhambra, you can walk up to Mirador de San Nicolas. This labyrinthine area is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another unique neighbourhood you must explore is Sacromonte. Nestled in the hills above Granada, this is home to the city’s thriving Roma (Gypsy) community and is famous for their whitewashed cave homes. An interesting stop is the Cave Museum of Sacromonte. It’s an open-air museum where caves have been recreated as they were 100 years ago, so visitors can learn about the living conditions and trades of its inhabitants. Both these historical neighbourhoods are accessible by foot. You also have the option of booking a walking tour if you’d like more of a guided experience.

Granada also has some of the oldest baths in Spain and this is another quintessential experience to enjoy while you’re there. There are several to choose from in Granada where you will be able to enjoy traditional hammam.

Experience a Flamenco Show and a Turkish Bath Round off your experience in Granada with a flamenco show. This Andalusian art form consists of tragic yet beautiful singing, guitar playing and passionate dancing which all culminates into one unforgettable experience. A popular venue for authentic flamenco is La Casa del Arte Flamenco, located in the city centre. You can also head up to Sacromonte to experience a show in a cave. Granada also has some of the oldest baths in Spain and this is another quintessential experience to enjoy while you’re there. There are several to choose from in Granada where you will be able to enjoy traditional hammam: hot and cold water baths, steam rooms, massages, and mint tea. Enjoy Granada’s Tapas Scene As my tour guide informed us, if you had to pay for your tapas, you’re not eating tapas. You’re just having Spanish food. Granada may be one of the few places left in Spain that honours the time-old tradition of tapas – whenever you order an alcoholic drink, you’ll get a scrumptious snack on the house and each successive drink secures an even more elaborate tapa. In Granada, the free tapas ranged from hefty servings of croquetas de jamon (breaded and fried bechamel fritters with Spanish cured ham), fried shrimp and fish fritters, sherrysoaked clams, and even paella. A great place to experience this is Los Diamantes. This tiny tiled café may look unimpressive but is always packed with locals and tourists alike. Their drinks are reasonable at 2€-3€; be sure to arrive early if you want a spot to sit. For a traditional bar, head to Bodega Castañeda, known for its floor to ceiling barrels of wine. It’s mostly standing room only but it’s well worth it. For tapas with a twist, visit Om Khalsum, which serves up Arabic tapas. Enjoy bite-sized versions of falafel, shawarma and various other classics in beautiful Moorish surroundings – complete with tiles, carved arches and cushioned benches. Finally, don’t leave town without having churros and chocolate for a sinfully delicious breakfast. oth cars have two doors, feature M Performance tuning and are all new for this year. Yet, at the same time couldn’t be more different, residing on different ends of the spectrum but with one common goal: to put a smile on drivers’ faces. We’re talking, of course, about the 2020 BMW Z4 and 2019 8 Series, the latter making a return after a 20-year absence from the line-up. At a recent two-day BMW Drive Experience event on Vancouver Island we attended, the pair of cars were among a handful of other redesigned or newly introduced models such as the flagship X7 SUV and seventhgeneration 3 Series. On day one,

drivers piloted the impressive machines around a 200-pluskilometre route starting, and ending, at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit (VIMC) located in the scenic Cowichan Valley. At the crack of dawn the following morning, guests gathered at the 2.3-kilometre circuit — opened in 2016 and sitting on a 19-hectare plot of land — boasting 19 tight corners and significant elevation changes. Following a couple of lead-follow laps with instructors, the track was made available for open testing. Ahead is more information on two of our favourite participating vehicles. Both vehicles are on sale now.

ast seen in the late 90s, the return of the 8 series badge is quite a different story this time around. Still a grand tourer, the sleek coupe remains faithful to the concept first shown at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2017 in Italy with its low-slung stance, wide track, barely there carbon fibre roof and the slimmest LaserLight LED headlamps the brand has ever crafted. Matching LED headlights reside at the back above a blacked-out diffuser and quad-exit exhaust pipes. Luxury appointments abound in the cabin. Proving the large displacement engine is far from dead, a massive 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 lurks under the hood churning out 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox with steering wheel paddle shifters. While not as nimble as say the Z4 in the twisties, xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and Integral Active Steering (rear axle steering) allow the large car to recover quickly from any over-enthusiastic manoeuvres.

A FUN CAR TO DRIVE I should have expected this kind of performance from Porsche. The Macan is the smaller SUV of the Porsche line, with the Cayenne being the larger, and at a quick glance they do look somewhat similar in shape. But in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s congested roads, the Macan is just about perfect to get in and around and easily park in all lots. The Macan I was given to test was the base model unit

horsepower giving this SUV a 0 to 100 kph time of 6.7 seconds which isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bad for an all-wheeldrive vehicle weighing in at 1,859 kg. Putting all that power to the road is a seven-speed automatic that shifted flawlessly as you might expect from a Porsche. For those hills around North Vancouver, the Macan is also equipped with a hill holder feature which is nice when the vehicle behind you is too close. Overall, I found handling better than the average high-end SUV but a firmer ride than most. But one does not buy a Porsche for a luxury ride anyway.

I found them more than adequate for everyday driving and the odd bit of spirited driving. If you desire to tow, the base Macan will handle up to 2,000 lbs. One other nice feature if you have people and gear in the Macan are the self-adjusting/levelling headlights. The powerful LED headlights level themselves when the vehicle is loaded. Personally I could live with the basics when it comes to this Macan. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need all the bells and whistles to enjoy this fine SUV. If it is within your budget, the base Macan is a good place to start. At $56,100 base, the Macan gets you a fine handling SUV that can keep up with many cars worth a lot more. I like to think of the Macan as a practical vehicle that is fun to drive.

ike with Ford during the introduction of the EcoBoost Mustang, naysayers had a field day when Chevrolet originally announced a turbocharged four-cylinder version of the sixth generation Camaro. Now three years old, it just got a facelift and we took the boosted model out to see if the term muscle car is still appropriate.

So what’s new for 2019? The front end of our 1LT is definitely meaner looking. The mesh grille, housing slimmer LED dual element headights, extends much deeper into the bumper than before, and the lower central intake connects to the ones in the corners. Our Riverside Blue Metallic tester had the optional 1LE Track

The bundle also adds a blacked-out front splitter, hood wrap, subtle trunk spoiler and wide 20-inch alloy wheels, among a whole host of interior and performance upgrades. The cabin has a good blend of raciness and usability, featuring a suedewrapped flat bottomed steering wheel and shift knob, and a seven-inch touch display — running the latest Chevrolet Infotainment 3 software — which is curiously angled downwards, presumably to mitigate glare on a sunny day. Another unique design choice is the placement of the hazard light toggle directly ahead of the shifter. More than once I turned them on whether via an

Finally, unlike pretty much any other vehicle I’ve been in, changing the temperature and fan settings involves twisting the ring around the central two circular air vents. Definitely interesting. The fabric seats provide great support. A high-definition backup camera is standard, and really comes in handy given the sliver of a rear window and the blind spot created by the girthy C pillar. Surprisingly, trying to crack the window end up is a bit of a chore due to oversensitive switches. Pressing down even a little too hard results in triggering the auto-down feature. Circling back to engine, yes — this Camaro is powered by a forced-induction four-banger. Would one know it by driving it? Maybe. Rated at 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, the output is certainly there. As with most turbo applications, a tad of lag upon acceleration is discernable. Things pick up in a hurry, though and the 1LT can move. If only the compact motor generated the same sound the V8 in the SS grade makes. In addition, thanks to the aforementioned track pack, the spec DARPAN drove possessed Brembo brakes, limited slip differential, uprated suspension (larger diameter front and rear stabilizer bars, stiffer dampers and more) and a better cooling system. The car also benefited from a precise-feeling six-speed manual transmission, although some sort of lockout mechanism would be nice to prevent an unintentional shift into reverse instead of first gear. On the road, the Camaro behaves as expected. Cool and composed when driven conservatively, but turn the wheel and quickly push the gas pedal down at the same time and the rear will try to come out and say hello. That said though, even over several days of consecutive rain there were no sketchy moments behind the wheel. Planning on handing the keys to a youngster? DARPAN AutoREVIEW need additional seats, and it'll fit somebody probably up to 5’8” comfortably.” The 2.0-litre four banger puts out 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.0-litre inline six outputs 362 horses and 369 lb-ft. Both utilize turbocharging, a ninespeed automatic transmission and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive (AWD). However the AWD system on the latter engine permanently distributes torque evenly at a 50:50 split, and the latter is electronically controlled and variable between 1 to 100 per cent front to rear, depending on road conditions and vehicle settings. Getting a chance to drive each variant, the 350 is disarmingly smooth and responsive without too much — but a little — noticeable lag at take-off. The 450 unsurprisingly gives more immediate oomph upon application of the throttle, thanks in part to mild hybrid tech. Called EQ Boost, an onboard 48-volt Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) unit is capable of supplying a burst of enhanced performance, in the form of 21 horsepower and a whopping 184 lb-ft of torque, which helps bridge the acceleration gap as the turbocharger is spooling up. It also enables “gliding” under low load where the engine is actually automatically switched off and electric propulsion kicks in. Kinetic energy is recuperated and sent back to the battery during deceleration. Yet another quirky feature of the ISG is to supply power to the optional AIRMATIC Air Suspension (+$2,450).

The springs and dampeners can be individually adjusted at each wheel allowing for a handful of neat functions. For example when activated, CURVE leans the GLE into the direction of a turn to counteract body roll and minimize occupant discomfort. When off-roading, a rocking mode causes the entire mid-size crossover to bounce up and down to reduce the ground pressure of the tires and improve traction. Not only does this create the potential for escape from being stuck in sand, snow or dirt, but looks absolutely hilarious. We haven’t yet touched on appearance, and I’m happy to report the vehicle is gorgeous. The aforementioned long wheelbase, short overhangs, large upright twin-louvered grille and accoutrements like chunky wheel arches and roof rails combine to provide a luxurious yet outdooradventure-approved aesthetic. The interiors of our test pilots were all class boasting plenty of leather, untreated wood and satin-finish aluminum. Dual 12.3-inch widescreen displays serve the role of visual centerpiece as well command centre for the instruments and the intelligent Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 and 450 are in dealerships now. Interested in some more kick under the hood? The movie-coaster kickstarts with Ayushmann Khurrana’s socially relevant and extremely thoughtful satire – Bala, which is followed by a quirky wedding

comedy starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Athiya Shetty. Close on the heels is another film promising a good dose of laughter – the remake of Sanjeev Kumar’s classic hit – Pati Patni Aur Woh. And then comes the hotly-awaited film of the year, Dabangg 3, starring the Bhaijaan of Bollywood, Salman Khan. Finally ending the year on a good note is Akshay Kumar’s Good Newwz. Now isn’t it a delectable spread?

he third instalment to the popular Dabangg franchise is undoubtedly the most-awaited film of the year and the excitement around it is palpable. After all, it brings back the most beloved screen cop ever – Chulbul Pandey, played by none other than the massy hero – Salman Khan. While the makers are tight-lipped about the film, it is learnt that the film will show Chulbul Pandey’s back story and will be high on action and drama. Speaking about the film, director Prabhu Deva said, “It is a typical Salman Khan film. Doing a Dabangg film was a challenge to me. I was new to the Dabangg universe. Everyone else (in the unit) had worked in the first and second parts of the series. Of course, I had seen both the earlier films. So, I made an effort to get into the groove. Luckily for me I didn’t fall flat.”

Speaking about his character in the film, Nawaz said, “When I read this script, the oddly, straight faced and unintentionally funny Pushpinder, really stood out. His desperation to get married drives him a little crazy forcing him down some insane alleys of life. I had a great time playing a character like him for the first time and working with Athiya Shetty was a delight.” Nawaz has never disappointed on screen and Motichoor Chaknachoor definitely seems to be worthy of our time and money.

Commenting about the concept of the film, Ayushmann said, “In an era of great content, Bala will stand out and will hopefully entertain everyone in the country. It’s one of my best films.” He added, “The film has everything for good cinema lovers and I can guarantee that they will find it a total paisa vasool entertainer that is socially relevant and extremely thoughtful at the same time.”

uch to the chagrin of chain movie theatres, purists and Steven Spielberg, Netflix is positioned to do very well in the upcoming awards season. The streaming service’s end-of-year roster features the film to beat – The Irishman – and strong contenders in acting categories. Except for

one movie, all Netflix titles will hit specialty movie houses a couple of weeks before becoming available to subscribers (Vancity Theatre in the Greater Vancouver Area). Here are the must-watch titles to be on top of the upcoming gold statues cavalcade.

JOJO RABBIT November 1 in theatres Now that Disney purchased Fox, the House of Mouse finds itself in the strange position of having to release a comedy featuring Adolf Hitler. Not to worry. Jojo Rabbit is as sweet as a fable set in the waning days of WWII go, starring a kid who starts as a true believer and slowly becomes aware of the hate Nazism has imbued in him. Oscar odds: As terrific as Jojo Rabbit is, to reward a film that casts Hitler as someone’s imaginary friend is a bridge too far for the Academy.

THE KING November 1 in theatres and Netflix Timothée Chalamet has opted to pursue quality projects instead of cashing in on his heartthrob status. His latest, The King, is loosely based on Shakespeare’s Henry V, with more up-to-date references and a less romantic approach to war. In a brilliant bit of casting, former Twilight poster-boy Robert Pattinson is the villain of the piece as the Dauphin of France. Oscar odds: Not fantastic. Normally historical dramas fare well at the Oscar, but this year the competition is formidable.

The plot – the rise and fall of the assassin perhaps responsible for the murder of Jimmy Hoffa – is fascinating in its own right, but the main attraction is to watch these heavyweights interact one more time. Oscar odds: De Niro and Pacino have starred in a number of clunkers in the last decade (I see your Dirty Grandpa and raise you Jack and Jill), but early word is that they’re in top form. TM

FORD V FERRARI November 15 in theatres Two of the strongest Gen-X actors star in a movie engineered to hit the Academy soft spots: A car designer (Matt Damon) and a daredevil driver (Christian Bale) put behind beefs and personal demons to build a vehicle fast enough to beat the über powerful Ferrari machine at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. James Mangold (Logan) directs. Oscar odds: Reception at the Toronto Film Festival was lukewarm at best, but given the talent involved it is worth paying attention.

Career high for Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Oscar odds: Both leads should be on the running, same as script. As a whole, the scope is too narrow next to the likes of Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood and The Irishman.

RICHARD JEWELL December 13 in theatres The conservative alternative this award season, it tells the story of a security guard first hailed as a hero for discovering a bomb that could have killed dozens, but was later vilified by the press when doubts about his innocence emerged. Eighty nine-year-old Clint Eastwood came up with this.

Oscar odds: Greta Gerwig is the real deal and the time is right to reappraise Louisa May Alcott’s magnum opus. Could be this year’s dark horse.

meek Singh and Manveen Kaur migrated to Canada with their two kids, Ramit and Tejal, in August 2017 seeking better quality of life and future for the family. They planned the move well in advance and rented a basement suite at an independent house in South Vancouver before their arrival, and went straight to this house after landing at Vancouver airport. Their first impressions: “It’s a country with vast natural beauty, fresh air and clean water. Canadians are polite, helpful and proud of their multicultural society,” says Ameek.

There were a few adjustments the family had to make to accept the Canadian way of living. “Drinking directly from tap water was surprising,” mentions Manveen. Additionally, adjusting to the long cold season in Canada took a while as they came from India where it usually is a hot and tropical climate. “As we came from a metropolitan city, Delhi NCR, adjusting to the general social environment has been an easy ride,” adds Ameek. Like most immigrant families, Ameek and Manveen’s biggest challenge was to find a suitable job as per their experience and skillset in their respective fields. “It took us a while for both of us to ‘get the first foot into the door’ – a cliché for job market here,” recalls Ameek. With both having educational qualification in computer engineering, back in India, Ameek worked for HSBC at Gurgaon, and Manveen worked as an Assistant Professor in Galgotias University at Noida. Yet, the job hunt here was difficult. “It was not easy to get the job role and profile of choice, but our perseverance and focus paid off in the long run. Today, we both are working in the

fields of our choice,” says Ameek. Ramit and Tejal had their share of challenges adjusting into their new school environment. “It has been a total cultural and mindset shift for them to adjust into Canadian society. But they overcame this struggle with their strong will, good guidance and help from their school teachers,” explains Manveen. The family is happy to call Canada their home. “We like the people, the quality of life and clean environment (minus pollution) here. There is dignity of labour and respect for law,” says Manveen, adding that the only think they dislike is the long winters and rainy season. Ameek believes their journey so far has been great. “We had a bumpy ride in the beginning but everything worked out well in the long run. We see a good life ahead for ourselves and a bright future for our children.”

BIGGEST OBSTACLE FACED SO FAR IN CANADA: 1. Not having previous Canadian experience has been the biggest hurdle in respective fields for both me and my wife. 2. Vancouver being a very costly city for new immigrants.

RESOLUTIONS MADE FOR YOURSELF OR FAMILY: 1. Being successful while leading a good quality life. 2. Providing the best education to our kids, and guiding them to choose the best career for their future. 3. Giving back to Canadian society either through our service, charity or being involved in social causes.

ADVICE FOR IMMIGRANTS: 1. Come with an open mind, stay strong and don’t lose hope. 2. Be well-informed before coming here. Gather through friends, social circle and search over the Internet to gear up for the Canadian way of life. This will help to face all challenges (whether personal and professional) and obstacles in a better way, during the initial days of settling down in Canada.

MEMORIES OF YOUR HOMELAND: We do miss our families, friends and the social circle we built during all those years spent in our homeland. But simultaneously, we look forward to building good memories in Canada while adding new chapters in our lives.
