“I have always said that one lifetime is less to take all these inspirations and convert them into design because the minute you start travelling in India, design hits at you.”

Anita Dongre

T

he rich genealogy of India’s fashion evolution is a treasured heritage reflecting legacy of the royals and India’s widespread regional imprints. From the Mughal’s who came in through the plains of Afghanistan, to the British who

later influenced social values of this nation, fashion has been a loyal witness to the extensive journey. It’s no surprise that designers in India today are constantly turning back in time for inspiration and collaborating that voice with contemporary moods.

Photos: Anita Dongre

Anita Dongre, one of India’s celebrated fashion designers, has spectacularly conjugated this essence. With design aesthetics inspired by Rajasthan’s vibrant heritage, Anita Dongre label continues to dominate fashion statements of personalities in Bollywood and beyond. And although she has expanded widely to accommodate other brands, Dongre’s handcrafted bridal goatapatti lehengas and handwoven heritage Banarasi creations remain a distinguished identity altogether. Initiated more than two decades ago, the label has germinated into distinct brands including - Global Desi, a vibrant line of boho-chic ensembles; AND, contemporary western wear; Anita Dongre, bespoke bridal couture; and, Grassroot, the most recent in line celebrating India’s craft and weaves while adhering to organic and eco-friendly processes. How does her design evolve through these brands? “The essence and soul remains, but one tries to do better and better with every collection. My style has always been very simplistic, very feminine, so it stays the same, but you work on your craft, you

learn new techniques, your team gets bigger. You hone your skills I suppose.” Wedding Diaries is Dongre’s latest collection in her bridal edition. Inspired by the splendour of 1135 AD café sitting magnificently in Jaipur’s Amer fort, her colour palette integrates vintage tones of sparkling champagne, rich marsala, siege green and powder blue on raw silk, Banaras brocades and georgettes. Bride’s insignia flaunt deftlycurated Banarasi weaves, while the bespoke bridal couture embraces the unconventional bride in twirling lehengas, striking gowns, anarkalis and gorgeous bandgalas. Dongre’s newest collection Love Notes, narrates a beautiful story with Aditi Rao Hydari working her magic as the perfect muse. The flamboyant composition of handcrafted prints on cotton, georgette and Chanderi fabric showcase the essential stage of a bride-to-be’s life where she is ruminating on her emotions, independence and commitment. “Love Notes for me was a stage in the bride-to-be’s life where she is taking a break with herself. Nothing is so

important today for an independent woman, [than] to take a holiday with herself and my muse is on a vacation in Rajasthan with herself, wandering over committing to a marriage that is going to happen soon,” explains Dongre. Shot within the majestic courtyard of Bikaner’s Junagarh Palace, Love Notes almost perfectly synchronizes with the regal theme that this palace forges. Bright prints resting on cotton, georgette and Chanderi silks speak magnificence in the royal backdrop constituting a beautiful composition. The thrust of Dongre’s versatile campaigns, which is the grandeur of Rajasthan, remains intact, though we see unexpected variations. She reflects on this inspiration saying “I just feel blessed that I am born in India, it’s a unique land and every state inspires you. I have always said that one lifetime is less to take all these inspirations and convert them into design because the minute you start travelling in India, design hits

how you convert that into wearable fashion.” The brand signifies Dongre’s association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India campaign and she describes the launch as a milestone in her fashion designing career. In spirit of this milestone, Dongre had 22 artisans from the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) walk the runway in their traditional attire. In response, these weavers and handcrafters were applauded with a standing ovation, marking a memorable moment at Indian Textile Day at Lakme Fashion Week 2015. at you. I think what one does with every collection is that they try to make those dreams and designs that float in mind come alive.” Presently, the ace designer is focussed on her recently launched brand Grassroot, a tribute to the treasured handcrafted tradition surviving centuries of influence. The brand aims to provide wider exposure to the rural artisans while also extending livelihood opportunities by partnering with various NGOs. “We are working with crafts, especially crafts in rural areas, crafts that need sustaining, so that’s really taking up all my energy. It is challenging to work with remote villages, the distances and how you work with people who basically practice crafts from home [and]

Shahid Kapoor & Mira Rajput

30 Traditions By DARPAN

This Bollywood heartthrob raised many eyebrows when he decided to get hitched to the beautiful Mira Rajput in a private ceremony in July 2015. This adorable couple's families are followers of Radha Soami Satsang Beas, a philosophical organization based on spiritual teachings of all religions. Shahid and Mira are believed to have met during

Siddharth Roy Kapur & Vidya Balan UTV giant's head honcho Siddhartha Roy Kapur and Vidya's Balan's marriage in December 2012 didn't come as a surprise due to their previously dating rumours which they constantly rubbished. Nevertheless, the actress who is described as Bollywood's female Khan was drenched with congratulatory messages on social media from fans and Bollywood stars on her big day. Like most Bollywood weddings, this too was a hush-hush affair except that it was an elegant display of Vidya's simplistic persona. Two wedding ceremonies, Tamil and Punjabi were held to respect and celebrate cultural values of both families.

one of its gatherings with their families and what conspired later was evidently an affair to remember. Since their wedding last year, Shahid has maintained strict privacy around this milestone, but occasionally on social media, fans get to cherish their romantic moments of togetherness.

Abhishek Bachchan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as a globally acclaimed actress and

former Miss World, and Abhishek Bachchan as a noted actor with impeccable comic timing, have cemented their names in the Indian film fraternity individually and as an on-screen couple in movies such as Guru, Sarkar Raj, Dhoom 2, Yuva, Devdas and Taal. How and what conspired their romance remains obscure but we do know Abhishek proposed to Aishwarya in New York city and got married in a traditional ceremony inside the Bachchan's Mumbai residence, Prateeksha. In April 2016, the couple will mark their 10th anniversary with their four-year-old daughter Aaradhya Bachchan.

Saif Ali Khan & Kareena Kapoor Khan Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan officially came out as a couple following the release of Tashan in 2008. Though the movie failed to draw crowds into theatres, Saif and Kareena's on-screen and off-screen pairing successfully managed to

culminate buzz. With Saif's royal heritage and Kareena's celebratory lineage, the couple's wedding was bound to be an extravagant starstudded affair in 2012. Succumbing to the royal ritual, Kareena wore her mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore's wedding ensemble and looked stunning with the Nawab of Pataudi, Saif Ali Khan.

Shilpa Shetty Kundra & Raj Kundra Shilpa Shetty's marriage to London-based businessman Raj Kundra was an over-the-top majestic ceremony marked with elements of extravagance (evidently obvious with her uncut diamond ring gifted by Raj). They got married in 2009 and definitely splurged on all ceremonies. Shilpa adorned spectacular jewellery with designer Tarun Tahiliani ensembles, whereas Raj entrusted designer duo Shantanu & Nikhil with his attire.

Destination Proposal Do you want to bring it early on or towards the end of your trip? Will it be indoors or outdoors? How would you bring it up? 36 Traditions By DARPAN

S

o you’re ready to pop the big question, but getting anxious on making it extraordinary, romantic and memorable? Even the simplest of proposals can seem challenging for the passionate romantic so ease out a bit, this is not as pressurizing as it is made to feel, but yes, you definitely need to have some organization in place before the celebrations start rolling (if it’s a yes). Destination proposal – a recent trend amongst couples – might be your answer for an unforgettable

proposal. Whether it’s an adventurous spot in an other hemisphere or a quite getaway to a nearby village, destination proposals have unmatched perks. Here are some tips to make that upcoming destination proposal absolutely worth it!

When, Where and How Do you want to bring it early on or towards the end of your trip? Will it be indoors or outdoors? How would you bring it up? Write down answers to these questions and consider half of your planning done. Consider weather conditions before deciding indoor/ outdoor options and have a backup plan, just in case. Depending on your partner’s style decide the mood you would create before the proposal. What may be utterly romantic to one person, might seem cheesy to another.

Photo: Apoteo Surprise

37

Whether your up for a destination proposal or not, a photographer is a must. If you are planning to pop the question at the resort, the staff might give you great suggestions on the spot, food, and also photographer.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Help

Photograph Everything

A guest service agent or a concierge can be of tremendous help. There might be a local festival or he/she might suggest a not-so-known romantic spot. If there is a special local festival happening around this time, it might just make your proposal effortlessly unforgettable. Several resorts and hotels have an engagement concierge who specialize in this field.

Whether your up for a destination proposal or not, a photographer is a must. If you are planning to pop the question at the resort, the staff might give you great suggestions on the spot, food, and also photographer. A lot of resorts offer this as a complimentary service. Make sure to research and notify the resort/hotel about the proposal in advance, or right when you reach there.

The Ring As exciting it as it may sound, a destination proposal can be slightly tricky for various reasons. One of the most important factors in this regard will be carrying the ring through security and customs without your partner getting a wind of it. Keep the ring packed inside the box it originally came in, this will keep it safe and secure. It is advisable to stick a note on the box, “Proposal ring inside, kindly be discreet. This will hopefully prevent any obvious confrontations from security, in case any issues arise. Once transported safely to the destination, keep it secure (maybe inside a sock or an ugly sweater).

Melwyn & Stephenie We will always be with, for and by each other at all times, because that's what keeps us going and will always be the driving force for our marriage. How Our Paths Crossed Stephenie: We met online through Facebook. We chatted with each other online for a few months and then Melwyn suggested that we meet in person. Melwyn: The first meet was absolutely out of the box. I was doing night shift at my work place and had just got done from work. I asked one of my friends to drop me at her place so that I could meet her and talk to her

first thing in the morning. He drove me there, and there I was in front of her door at 7:30 a.m., while she was still in her sleep. Words cannot express the look she had on her face and I was stunned to having finally met her that morning.

The Proposal Stephenie: Like every couple we had our share of ups and downs, breakups and makeups which went on for a long time. During our dating period, we realised

that no matter how far we go we always come back to each other. With the passing years, we have seen each other grow in the relation, and with three years of dating, we mutually decided to tie the knot. Melywn: We knew that we were destined to be together one day.

The Wedding Melwyn: Wedding day as everyone calls it "D-Day" was something we both had treasured

Spending time together alone is our top most priority as a couple. within our hearts for a very long time as every individual does in his/her lifetime. The day was in our opinion one of the weddings of the season. We don’t say this because it’s our wedding but if I go by experience at other weddings, we never thought we would dance so much until we dropped. We enjoyed it so much that we would want to marry again and again. Favourite moment from the wedding day would be when I held her in my arms and sang

the song, ‘This I Promise You’. Stephenie: My favourite too was when he sang the song. I remembered our first meeting as he had sung the same song to me on the day we first met.

The Reception Stephenie: It was a fun wedding. Our theme was yellow and white, so the decorator did an amazing job with regards to the

backdrop, entrance, centerpiece and the entire venue. We also had a bubble machine on the dance floor. Our first dance was on the song ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and Melwyn and I waltzed to it. We did not leave the dance floor at all until the end. It was amazing to see so much crowd on the dance floor having a great time. Melwyn: It was amazing, breath-taking, hitched in memory forever.

The Honeymoon Melwyn: We had our honeymoon at one of the world's favourite destinations - Thailand. We enjoyed it so much that spending time together alone in an exotic location is our top most priority as a couple.

What I Love About You Melwyn: I love her smile and her beauty. These two attributes were, are and will always be treasured by me till I breathe my last. We will always be with, for and by each other at all times, because that's what keeps us going and will always be the driving force for our marriage. Stephenie: Out first meeting wasn’t so impressive, but getting to know him slowly made me fall in love with him. The thing I love most about him is the respect he gives me.

Hars & Aman The most important goal would be to have a long lasting and healthy marriage to look back upon when we are older and cherish those memories. How Our Paths Crossed Hars: We met a year and half ago through Aman's brother Karm who thought I would be a good match for his sister. Karm was a good friend of mine from many years ago and once Aman and I exchanged numbers we would talk for hours. We met for coffee a few times and instantly connected, we both knew from that moment it was meant to be and we were soulmates.

48 Traditions By DARPAN

The Wedding Hars: Our wedding day was truly a fairytale, it was a dream come true for both of us. Everything that we had planned from outfits, to vehicles and decorations went according to plan. Not only was it special to share this day with family and friends but their support and help made each moment meaningful and unforgettable. Also we lucked out with our photographer and videographer, had an amazing experience with Nav Images Photography and Studio 101.

One of the many favourite moments of the wedding was when both of us walked around the Guru Granth Sahib during the laavan ceremony as we took blessings to start a new chapter in our life. The laavan was a special moment and we felt a very deep spiritual and emotional connection because we were going to be spending the rest of our lives together.

The Reception Hars: Our reception was

Our wedding day was truly a fairytale, it was a dream come true for both of us. Everything that we had planned from outfits, to vehicles and decorations went according to plan. Not only was it special to share this day with family and friends but their support and help made each moment meaningful and unforgettable. spectacular, we went with a winter wonderland theme and each detail was exactly how we planned. We wanted to make our guests feel and experience something unique right when they walked. We had a special mocktail menu which was named after us: The Amazing Aman, Harstellar and lastly The Happily Ever After, the dessert menu was specially made with cookies and milk shots which were a huge hit with the guests as they wanted more.

The entertainment was off the hook, our DJs made our night with their upbeat mixes, great genres of music and having both new and old school tunes. The highlight of the night was the dance off, our DJ had both of us do a dance off and let the crowd decide the winner.

The Honeymoon Hars: We went to Mexico for our honeymoon to a private all inclusive

resort. It was such a nice trip as we both got to get away from this weather and enjoy some sunshine. It also allowed us to try out new adventures such as ziplining, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Our Goals Hars: To help one another be the best we can and always support each other through both the ups and downs. To enjoy life by traveling the world and experiencing new things. The most important goal would be to have a long lasting and healthy marriage to look back upon when we are older and cherish those memories. Ultimately to follow the blueprints our parents laid out for us on how to create a long term relationship.

What I Love About You Aman: What we love the most about each other is that we push each other to be better every single day. I love Hars for his great personality, his sense of humour and how he's caring and responsible. Hars: What I love about Aman is that she helps me become more patient, guides me to a more spiritual path, and is always there when I need her advice.

Words of Advice Hars: The best advice we can give is try to be organized and plan your details ahead of time. More importantly enjoy the process and try to make the best of the situation, but checking in with each other and communicating will make things easier. As the wedding time gets stressful and hectic the couples should take time out to relax before the big day and enjoy every moment because it goes by really fast. Also we would highly recommend they get a wedding planner; with our busy schedules it was difficult to get everything planned out and know which vendor to use therefore luckily for us we had someone that helped us through the way.

Ankit & Deepika We chartered a helicopter and saw Cape Town from it. On the way back to the ground a massive banner lay asking the question “Dee will you marry me?” All she did after that was cry! I still have not gotten a yes from her! How Our Paths Crossed Deepika: We first met each other in our GMAT class in 2010. We hardly spoke to each other but found each other cute. That was the beginning. After a year through a common friend we connected again and things started rolling from there. We started chatting with each other on blackberry messenger and soon could not stop talking to each other all day! Chats turned into meetings and we continued to get closer and rest is history. Fast forward five years, both of us are doing our MBA and happily married.

The Proposal Deepika: We were scheduled to get engaged so I was sure that I was not going to have any fairytale-like proposal that I had always wished for. So me and my family went on a vacation to South Africa to see my fiancé in April and that’s where he surprised and vowed me Bollywood-style. Horse riding on white sandy beach followed by a helicopter ride and as we landed a huge banner saying ‘Dee will you marry me?” I kept crying for the next half an hour. Ankit: Since I knew Deepika always wanted a grand proposal I

planned a surprise for her. After asking her parents permission I took her horse riding on a secluded beach in Cape Town, South Africa. It was stunning and serene. Post the horse riding we sat on the mountain side over looking the Pacific Ocean on Chapman’s Peak (one of the most beautiful drives in the world). We popped a champagne here and then I took her out for an aerial tour of Cape Town. We chartered a helicopter and saw Cape Town from it. On the way back to the ground a massive banner lay asking the question “Dee will you marry me?” All she did after that was cry! I still have not gotten a yes from her!

Deepika: Our wedding day was as epic as our relationship is! We had a destination wedding at Taj Jai Mahal, Jaipur. The wedding arrangement was done beautifully with every intricate detailing looked by my parents. Ten minutes after the pheras were over, we sat on the stage and suddenly we were hit by a huge sandstorm with thunderstorm which blew everything away. Well

it’s said that rain on the wedding day is considered auspicious! Ankit: Wedding day was totally crazy. First my friends would not let the baraat move forward! Having a slip disc problem, I was willing to jump of the horse and walk to the wedding. Somehow I made it to the wedding. The pheras were beautiful and the setting was just magical. It felt like the wedding was right out of the movies. It was timed to perfection

and beautifully done. We were so exhausted by the reception! This was the soberest out of all the functions. What we thankfully missed at the wedding (pictures clicked with ABCD…...XYZ people because of the storm) we had to get it done here. Ankit: I was just happy to wear a suit after all the Indian wear! On a serious note it was amazing. Introducing Deepika as Mrs. Dhawan was special. Despite the tiredness it was sad that it was the last function because on each function Deepika and I also had a great time. We were sad that we had to fly out after the reception.

The Honeymoon Deepika: Ankit could not miss many days of his MBA school so we came to Ithaca (A little village where he studies) in New York post marriage! But we later went to Ocho Rios, Jamaica for a week.

Ramneet & Mandeep To never stop dating each other while keeping the spark and passion that we have for our love to grow every step of the way. How Our Paths Crossed Ramneet: Growing up and thinking about the man of my dreams, never did I imagine that a social media website would be the path that would lead me to the happiest moments of my life. Facebook united our ways and soon after we began messaging each other on MSN messenger. I still remember the butterflies that I would get in my stomach as I saw the notifications of him signing online. Eventually after his several tries of asking me out for lunch or coffee, I finally decided to agree. It was the first

time we were meeting each other in person, yet it felt like I had known him forever. One thing led to another and soon within the month we were meeting each other’s parents. To look back and realize how everything ran so smoothly truly makes me feel blessed.

The Proposal Ramneet: We had our roka, a.k.a pre-engagement, done with our families in December 2013 and at that moment we finalized the wedding date for August 08, 2015. As I was just starting my Dental Hygiene program, we

thought that it would be perfect to have the wedding during the summer after my graduation. Exactly one year before our wedding on August 08, 2014, we decided to celebrate with what I thought was just a dinner. Little did I know what he had planned for me. He officially proposed to me at a beautiful scenic park in North Vancouver with a picnic area set up right by the water. The view and ambiance was amazing, and everything felt so peaceful and perfect. I also had no idea that he had asked our close friends to hide and take pictures to capture the moment forever.

The Wedding

Ramneet: I remember waking up in the morning with this feeling that words cannot explain, realizing that today is the big day. We were expecting rain the full day during our August wedding, however we were lucky to have sunshine shining through the windows as we were getting ready. The entire day felt like a true blessing, surrounded by our family and friends as we swore to be together through thick and thin. Throughout every single wedding planning, event, or discussion there was always something that felt incomplete, and that was my dad’s presence. For every daughter having her father by her side during her wedding is a blessing, and it always hurt that I could not have my dad give me away or walk me down the aisle. However, during the morning of my wedding my bouquet arrived at home and right when I saw his picture in my bouquet I felt a strong sense of his presence

around me, and that is a moment that I will never forget. Also, one of my favourite moments during the wedding ceremony was when we were officially married and he turned towards his left looking at me in the eyes with this huge smile saying, “We’re married”. Mandeep: My favourite moment was looking back as she was walking down the aisle in the Gurdwara, and I remember telling myself, “it’s finally that time, the moment we both have been waiting for.”

The Reception Ramneet: Our reception turned out to be bigger than we expected with close to 900 people present. For decorations of the venue we were lucky to have the girls from Universal Décor, who set our stage and walkway with beautiful flowers, chandeliers and candles. I had messages from my friends before we had entered the venue saying how elegant the décor looked. As huge Bollywood fans, we decided to enter our reception on a rickshaw with the remixed Hindi song “Banno Tera Swagger” playing in the background. Our guests were cheering us on as Mandeep rode the rickshaw in and I danced sitting on the backseat. It was the perfect way to start the night and let our guests know that we are ready to party.

WEDDING STORY

The Honeymoon Ramneet: The week after our wedding we had a quick trip to Vernon and stayed at Sparkling Hill Resort. It was the best place to go right after the wedding to just relax and sit in saunas, or by the pools. But for our official honeymoon we decided to be touristy and went to Paris, Rome and Naples. It was an amazing experience in a country with a foreign language, and definitely brought out our adventurous side.

What I Love About You Ramneet: I love that he brings out the best in me. He always motivates me to do more in life, and when I’m feeling down he lifts me up. I still remember the crazy breakdown I had during the first week of dental hygiene school due to all the overwhelming pressure of dates and deadlines, however after talking to him he made me feel like I

could achieve anything. Mandeep: I love that from day one I could be myself around her. Also, I love the fact that I can call her my best friend, sharing anything and everything with her while knowing that she will hold no judgments against me.

Words of Advice Do not stress over the small details because in the end everything always works out. Have open communication about everything. Remember it is not just about the wedding, but the lifetime commitment of marriage.

Vriti & Kapil Though (as usual) the baraat got late but it was the most perfect setting aside the river, amidst the mountains and our loved ones around us as we exchanged vows under the gorgeous moonlight. How Our Paths Crossed Vriti: Kapil and I met at our respective childhood best friend’s engagement in July 2013. We were formally introduced after that, became friends during their wedding in November 2013, during all the dance practices and wedding madness, and that’s where cupid struck.

The Proposal Vriti: The proposal was simple and special at the most sacred and pure place - Gurudwara Bangla

Sahib where we had gone to seek blessings. Little did I know he would pop the question while we were taking the round of the sarovar. The words were pure, honest and perfect and I did not even take a second to say, “Yes of course!”

The Wedding Vriti: The wedding took place at Riverview Retreat Resort at Jim Corbett Park. Kapil always wanted a destination wedding before he even met me. He wanted to get married at a beautiful offbeat place, and he made me realise how perfect this would be. We both did

not want a full blown commercial Delhi wedding. Instead we wanted to get married at a beautiful location outside of Delhi, with a limited guest list of close family and friends. Kapil and I had been involved at every step of planning the wedding so it was quite a journey to the D-Day. Though (as usual) the baraat got late but it was the most perfect setting aside the river, amidst the mountains and our loved ones around us as we exchanged vows under the gorgeous moonlight. There was not too much hustle bustle, no drama, just a sweet and pretty

affair, a Punjabi wedding with all its flair yet calmer to enjoy the beauty of the setting that we were in. We did not want a stage and stand there like puppets, instead we enjoyed and mingled with the crowd and let the festivities soak in. Kapil: Some of my favourite moments from the wedding - the baraat time with the elephant ride which felt like royalty, the impromptu song I sang when the host asked me to propose to Vriti, and pheras by the river.

The Reception Vriti: We just totally let our hair down at the wedding reception that followed and it was pure madness in terms of fun, dance and laughter. A fabulous celebration where one and all danced the night away!

The Honeymoon

Vriti: Our honeymoon was a month long trip to two places - US and UK. We both love to travel to new places and explore new things. We started off with a cruise from Miami to Bahamas, followed by Miami, Las Vegas, LA, New York and last stop was London.

What I Love About You Vriti: I love his honest, pure and big heart. He's the perfect gentleman who has admirable morals and values. He is very intelligent, logical, caring, understanding and fun loving. A very responsible, patient and strong headed person whom one can always learn from. He believes in living life king size and makes sure I get to live like his queen.

Kapil: What I love most about her is that she’s intelligent, creative, has strong business sense, is empathetic, has a gorgeous singing voice, cares about being good to other people, and is beautiful. A cherry on top is her laugh. It is the most genuine laugh that I have ever heard. It's straight from the heart, unfiltered, and one that always makes me laugh myself. It's contagious, heartfelt, unique and raw.

Our Goals Vriti: To build and maintain a relationship that grows and blossoms with every passing day and let this be the bond which makes you a better person, through thick and thin. To

complete each other’s strengths and weaknesses in the perfect compatible way. To enjoy and live up every bit of the relationship, and look forward to living each day of our entire life with love, compassion, honesty, fun and loyalty.

Words of Advice Vriti: Enjoy every bit of this magical time, do what makes you both happy, live it up and just don't do anything because the societal norms say so. When you personally get involved in the process, the end result is perfection. And its something you create and build from scratch, just like your relationship. It's the birth of a new bond, a new life all together

where you step into a new world and where everything is according to we and you and not ‘I’ anymore. Don't run after perfection for your wedding day, do it with all heart and everything will be beautiful.

Either spouse can choose to adopt their partner's surname. According to the Province of British Columbia's Marriage Act, “After marriage, you can choose to continue using your own surname (last name), or you can start using your spouse's surname. Assuming your spouse's surname does not constitute or require a legal change of name under the Name Act.” Surnames cannot be hyphenated or combined without a legal name change but you can return to your previous name at any point.

B

ecoming a Mr. And Mrs. comes with many exciting changes, one of which may be a new last name. What historically began as a way to ease the legalities of matrimony, adopting a married name is now a very personal but highly popular decision joining couples by a shared family name. Either spouse can choose to adopt their partner's surname. According to the Province of British Columbia's Marriage Act, “After marriage, you can choose to continue using your own surname (last name), or you can start using your spouse's surname. surname does not constitute or require a legal change of name under the Name Act.” Surnames cannot be hyphenated or combined without a legal name change but you can return to your previous name at any point. While not legally required according to BC laws, you'll likely want to update several methods of identification if you choose to take on the surname of your spouse so the name you use matches the name on your ID. The list of documents to change is quite long: driver's license, car insurance, health card, passport, social insurance number, bank accounts,

and credit cards along with any other accounts or memberships linked to your ID or credit cards. You will also need to inform Revenue Canada as well as your employer. Updating your passport will require a new passport application, not just a renewal. If your honeymoon is yet to happen, you may want to hold off changing your passport until any previously booked travel has been completed. Changes to most forms of identification will require your marriage license so don't forget to bring it with you to any in-person appointments or send it along with any applications. Making several copies as soon as you receive it can save you from scrambling as you complete your checklist. Another form of identification will also be required so updating your driver's license first may ease the process for all other updates. Once all the important documents have been updated, you'll want to advise certain people and places you only visit on occasion about your new name. This may include your doctor, dentist and hairdresser as well as updating your library, gym and online memberships. And don't forget about your online presence – your Facebook friends will be anxious to see your new name! The process for each change will vary in time but be prepared for at least several months of transitioning between names. Don't despair if your maiden name pops up from time to time for a year or more after you've tied the knot – there's always an old friend or unsolicited mail that may have missed your exciting news. While the process may seem tedious, the excitement and sentiment of being called by your new name for the first time will make it all worth the work. Don't let some additional planning deter your decision; with a detailed checklist, some organized files and a little bit of patience you'll move from Miss to Mrs. long before your first anniversary

Drama The Desi Wedding

Surviving Your Wedding in the Midst of Drama As the cliché goes, desi weddings bring two families together. But the fact of the matter is, whenever a large number of people are involved in anything, conflicts are bound to arise.

76 Traditions By DARPAN

D

rama is the first word that comes to mind when you think of desi weddings. From the news of the matter getting finalized up until the two are well settled into their new home, some form of drama always makes its way into the lives of these couples. It’s never easy though. A lot of people console the girl and give her advice but the reality is that the groom cannot escape it either. This drama is here to stay in his life too and the onus of maintaining a good balance will more often than not fall on him. As the cliché goes, desi weddings bring two families together. But the fact of the matter is, whenever a large number of people are involved in anything, conflicts are bound to arise. A lot of stakeholders have to be kept satisfied and amidst this it’s also important to remember the two people who brought everyone together in the first place. It can start from something as trivial as clothes. Since we are walking along the blurred lines between tradition and modernity, things can nowadays be more confusing than they were in the past. So for instance back in the day it was set in stone - who would buy the dress and for which day.

But today as matters of economy have changed too, some traditions are not always followed in such a stringent manner. The best way out is to communicate as politely as possible. If it’s a new family, you as a bride or groom are probably not sure of their ways. Go ahead and ask politely. You can never go wrong there. Assuming things and planning them accordingly could be the recipe for a disaster. So even if you’re shy and anxious, try breaking the ice and taking the plunge, after all that’s what marriage is and what better point to start at? Temperatures start rising when the relatives start pouring in. The showdown is near and everyone is over to be a part of the festivity. However, this means more and more decision making. Managing accommodation, food, transport etc. takes a lot of planning and work. Some families or friends may be flying in from another city or country and it is imperative to make them feel welcome and comfortable. As the bride and her family become a pair of nerves and as the big day gets closer, chances are some of the relatives can feel neglected. It could be the tiniest thing, like they don’t eat vegetables and there’s only one meat dish for dinner (Yes! The food situation can make or break your life). Make sure to always sound polite in response. It’s not possible for you to make everything perfect and people can very well be unreasonable but remember this is your wedding and you want everything to go smoothly so put that extra effort in there and be sure to say that you will make it up to them, even if you know it’s not humanly possible. Words and body language are more important than you think (Bring out that smile). Once the wedding is over, you may assume that life is back to normal once again, but sadly it is not over just yet. If you’re the bride, you are going to be living at a new place with a bunch of new people; if you’re lucky, with just one new person. For most couples nowadays, the journey to understand each other begins quite earlier than the actual wedding. But even if it doesn’t, don’t waste more time. Get on to asking him or her what they like and what they do not. It will give you a sense of the bigger picture - such as understanding the family. So even if your in-laws live across the country, let’s face it, families are important to both of you and your happiness depends on them as much as it depends on you as a couple. Finally, for the ladies, the MIL (No that’s not an intelligence agency, it’s the Mother-in-Law). For many girls, this word brings anxiety before and sometimes after marriage. But let’s admit it, a lot of it is due to pop culture and antiquated traditional ideas about an overpowering figure who wants you to be a doormat. Don’t get me wrong, conflicts can and will arise. Your job is to avoid confrontation and angst. So make sure to put yourself in the other’s shoes and try to understand their point of view and then explain yours. If it’s hard, try to reach a compromise, a middle point. Always remember politeness and patience go a long way in determining happiness not just as a married person but also as a single person!

It’s All in the

{DIY} Details Do-it-yourself inspiration to personalize your special day

S

aying ‘I do’ is an essential part of your wedding day but three other letters are just as necessary when it comes to making the details of your day all about you: DIY. From dessert buffets to blooming bouquets, you can do it yourself when it comes to just about any wedding detail. With an eye for design or a knack for calligraphy, it's easy to take care of all your own stationery needs. Make your own magnets or send your guests stickers for their calendar so they’re sure not to miss your big day.

78 Traditions By DARPAN

Invitations may seem like a daunting task for the inexperienced but with hundreds of downloads available and endless paper options, you’ll find a style that suits your taste and skill level. Escort cards are an especially fun way for the bride and groom to get creative with their day. From personalized macarons to painted rocks and small succulents to vintage keys, let your wedding theme or shared interests guide your guests to their seats. Similarly, guest books are growing

in popularity as a fun DIY project that shows off a couple’s style. Have your friends leave their well wishes on a painted globe or a canvas of your own artwork. Create a puzzle with your favourite photo and give each guest a piece to sign on the back. You and your guy may be the centre of attention but your tables need some love, too. Personalize some prominent décor by getting creative with your centrepieces. Consider painting candle holders and vases in different colours and various styles for a visually stunning table scape.

Make it more personal by using your own photographs transferred on to large wooden numbers so guests can spot their seat. Easily create a photo booth backdrop by draping different fabrics or various lengths of ribbon from the ceiling. Include some fun props by cutting out shapes like hearts, lips and silly glasses, tape them to wooden dowels and watch your guests show off their smiles. Send your guests home happy with a wedding favour you had a hand in creating, like a candle or a small potted plant. Maybe you're famous for making jam or have a family cookie recipe you know your guests would love. You don’t have to be too creative to make your mark – stick a pre-designed printable onto a minibottle of wine or attach a hand-written note to a cellophane baggie filled with candy. If some projects seem too big to tackle or above your skill level, start small with simple details that won’t necessarily take centre stage. Prepare a bridesmaid proposal box with a few accessories and a crafty note or add some sparkle to the bottom of your shoes for a easy DIY upgrade. Don’t let an overwhelming amount of options stop you from seeing your dream day come to life or settling for something you’re not smitten with. Make your day special by making it yourself.

A Toast To The

Bride & Groom How to pen the perfect prose for the happy couple

F

rom awkward to awesome, loved and loathed, the wedding speech is an oft anticipated part of a couple's special day. Whether it's warm words from a dad to his daughter, the groom serenading his new wife or a childhood friend with tales of trouble, writing a memorable wedding speech can be daunting but it's an incredible gift to give to a new bride and groom. If you've been asked to speak at a wedding, you likely have a close relationship to the couple you're celebrating. This means you can bring up personal details, like cute stories about their courtship or how you met each other, that provide guests with intimate insight they might not know otherwise. Begin with an introduction so guests know why you've been chosen to speak and then highlight something sweet or funny about the couple that only you may know. Getting personal creates a connection that will bring people closer to the bride and groom, making the celebration of their love that much more special. The day is ultimately about celebrating the love

between the newly married couple – so make your speech about the same thing. Speaking from the heart will undoubtedly mean the most. Being sincere in your sentiment (without boring guests with an overabundance of sappy words!) will show just how much you care about the couple and their commitment to each other. If you're not afraid to tell a joke, including some humour in your speech is a good way to keep your audience engaged. Speeches that include clever and witty content are often the most memorable but don't go overboard thinking it's amateur hour at a comedy club. Keep the meaning of the day in mind while bringing up a funny story with a cheeky end line to have your guests hoping to hear more. Keep any inappropriate comments for the bachelor party. The guest list is often varied and not all guests will appreciate a drunken tale or off-side humour. Similarly, it's important to respect the wishes of the newlyweds. If they've asked you not to tell a certain story or to keep it within a limited timeframe, chances are they're asking for a reason. It may be your speech but it's

their special day. A speech is your chance to show your gratitude to all those who made the day possible as well as supported and contributed to the couple's happiness. Depending on your role in the wedding, your time in front of the mic should include words of thanks to parents, the bridal party, wedding coordinators or friends and family who have travelled great distances or always lent a helping hand. No need to run down a list but instead stick to heartfelt words that show just how appreciative you or the newlyweds truly are. While you obviously won't be writing any 'ums' and 'uhs' into your speech, keeping them to a minimum when it comes time to speaking will allow your words and their sweet sentiments to shine through. It's easy to let your nerves get the best of you if you're not used to public speaking but it's important to prepare for and practice your delivery. The length of your speech will greatly impact how well it's received. A brief speech will be more memorable than one that is long, drawn out and has people hoping the end is near. Chances are there will be several speeches – the newlyweds, their parents, the maid of honour and best man – so a short speech will allow for everyone's words to be enjoyed and appreciated by all those in attendance. Closing comments, just like your opening, will need to pack a punch to have the most impact. Propose a toast to the couple or offer your best wishes for a happy marriage when wrapping up your speech. Consider signing off with a funny joke, quote about love or traditional blessing. You want your speech to be memorable for all the right reasons. Speak from the heart, hope for a few laughs and always keep the couple at the centre of your speech.

Stewed Pear with Winter Berry Coulis, Fennel & Ginger Ice Cream This delicious stewed pear recipe packs a serious punch, both in terms of flavour and visual appeal. Make sure you leave plenty of time to allow the ice cream to freeze.

Ingredients -

2 tbsp of fennel seeds 500ml of double cream 50g of caster sugar 1 tbsp of candied stem ginger 3 egg yolks 200g of pear purée 4 cinnamon sticks 2 tbsp of rose syrup 4 pears 250g of frozen mixed berries 50g of caster sugar 10 sprigs of mint

Method 1. For the fennel and ginger ice cream, toast the fennel seeds in a dry frying pan. Bring the double cream, toasted fennel and sugar to a boil. Remove from the heat and leave aside for 10 minutes. 2. Whisk the egg yolks until smooth, then add to the warm double cream, whisking constantly. Pass through a fine sieve, transfer to a freezer container and freeze overnight. 3. Sprinkle half the chopped candied ginger on top of the frozen ice

cream. Reserve the rest as garnish. 4. For the stewed pears, put the peeled pears, pear purée, rose syrup and cinnamon in a pan and bring to a simmer. 5. Poach the pears for 20 minutes or until soft. Remove the pears from the liquid and add the frozen mixed berries and sugar. 6. Bring back to a simmer and reduce the cooking liquid until slightly thickened. Cut the bottom off the pears to allow them to stand upright. 7. To plate, place a pear on the plate, spoon the berry coulis over the pear and serve warm with a scoop of fennel and ginger ice cream, a sprinkling of chopped candied ginger and a sprig of mint.

Tandoori Ananas Grilled pineapple with ground spices and honey served with rose ice cream is the perfect way to end a meal. This recipe is perfect for a summertime dinner party. Star anise and fennel seeds are widely available, while chaat masala can be bought from Indian grocery stores and online. This dessert requires overnight freezing so make sure you start it in plenty of time.

Ingredients -

500ml of double cream 50g of caster sugar 3 egg yolks 1 tbsp of rose syrup ½ pineapple, cut into 2 inch chunks 1 star anise, broken into smaller pieces ¼ tsp fennel seeds 1 tbsp of honey 1 pinch of chilli powder ¼ tsp chaat masala

104 Traditions By DARPAN

Method 1. To make the rose ice cream, put the double cream and sugar into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Remove from the flame and set aside for 10 minutes.

5. Gently toast the fennel seeds under a grill, crush coarsely and leave to cool. 6. In a bowl, mix together the honey, red chilli powder, crushed fennel and chaat masala.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks until smooth, and add to the warm double cream, whisking constantly.

7. Coat the pineapple chunks with the spiced honey glaze and cook under a grill until gently browned on the edges.

3. Pass the mixture through a fine sieve, and add the rose syrup. Mix well, then transfer to a freezer container and freeze overnight.

8. Remove the bits of star anise from the pineapple and slice. Brush with the spiced honey glaze again and serve hot with a scoop of rose ice cream.

4. Pierce the pineapple flesh with segments of the star anise and set aside.

Girls Night Out! BY ASHLEY STEPHENS

Make the last fling before the ring, a night to remember

W

edding season is just around the corner and while the bride-to-be is busy planning for her big day, the bridal party has some planning of their own to do. Bachelorette parties are becoming extravagant events to suit all kinds of interests.

If you're looking for a night out that involves more than just drinks and dancing, the endless options to get your girlfriends together in honour of the bride-to-be will let you create the perfect personalized party.

122 Traditions By DARPAN

123

Paint & Party Are your friends the creative type? Painting parties are popping up all over and it's the perfect way to gather some girlfriends and let your creative juices – as well as some beverages – flow. Sign up for a Paint Nite at a local restaurant or set up your own crafting stations at home. If you're looking for something a little more risqué, check out companies like Drawn to Men who bring art lessons along with a male model straight to your home for a studio session your girls won't want to miss.

If you're looking for a night out that involves more than just drinks and dancing, the endless options to get your girlfriends together in honour of the bride-tobe will let you create the perfect personalized party.

Get Out of Town It's said that travel can bring people closer together so why not plan a girls getaway? Pack the car, stock up on snacks and crank up some classic tunes as you cruise into a new town. Travelling offers tons of time to catch up and reconnect while perhaps doing some sightseeing, getting adventurous, or kicking back before the big day. Whether it's camping in Tofino, a cabin across the border or an all-inclusive resort in Mexico, time away from the dayto-day worries will let you focus on fun with your good friends.

Plan a Photo Shoot What's more fun than getting glammed up with your closest girls? Begin your day with a little pampering, pull out your best Blue Steel and let the cameras capture it all. Hiring a photographer for a fun photo shoot can be liberating and confidence-boosting – especially when done in a group! Plan to recreate old pin-up photos of the past with some vintage clothes and a cheeky pose. Or maybe Glamour Shots is more your style and a throwback to teased hair and satin gloves will get some great snaps along with a lot of laughter.

Planning

Try Something New Never tried axe throwing? Been to a comedy show? Made your own sushi? Time to step outside your comfort zone and try something you and your crew have never done before. If it's going to be your first time, no better way than with a bunch of your closest friends! Not only will you bond over the shared experience of unfamiliar territory but the support and encouragement that comes along with going as a group may calm your nerves and have you and your besties jumping at the chance to sit front row or be first in line.

Take a Wine Tour Not only are wineries a unique place to learn something new and treat your tastebuds, it's also a great way to sip and socialize with your closest friends without the crowds or loud music of a club. Local wineries offer tours and tastings alongside carefully constructed menus making it a relaxing and satisfying way to spend a day celebrating the connoisseur in your life. Turn it into a weekend of fun by visiting several of the over 130 vineyards in the Okanagan or, if your budget allows, fill your cup in Napa Valley, only a short flight away in California.

Be Active Dancing in a club isn't the only way to get your group out and moving. With so many mountains near by, grab your hiking gear and climb your way to the top of Grouse for some incredible views. With activities like ziplining and stand up paddle boarding so close to home, you can enjoy a perfect day outdoors in the company of your closest friends. If indoor activities are more your thing, try signing up for a group dance lesson or put your girlfriends through an intense bootcamp or barre class. Friends that sweat together, stay together.

HENNA Meet Darcy Vasudev, Destination Wedding Henna Expert Photo Credit: Henna Lounge

128 Traditions By DARPAN

129

What inspired you to carve a career as a henna artist?

Your advice to prevent any mishaps?

When I first started doing henna, as a hobby, in the San Francisco Area there weren't a lot of other artists so there was a lot of demand and Henna Lounge was born. Now, there are easily 50 or more artists in my area, so four years ago I started working on destination weddings instead, where there is still a real need for skilled artists who use natural henna.

The stain will get darkest if water can be avoided for 24 hours, which is especially important for destination weddings where the swimming pool may look awfully tempting. Additionally, you should never wrap the hands in Cling-Wrap, as you can perspire, which can re-melt the henna resulting in an unfixable smeared mess. A professional henna artist mixes their paste fresh for each event, so a great stain is guaranteed without resorting to old, messy techniques.

How has the art of henna evolved over the years? Even 50 years ago, henna designs were still really simple, maybe just a circle and some dots, or painstakingly applied with a stick or wire. The ubiquity of plastics means that anyone can make a cone and this makes it so much faster and easier to apply a precise design. What was once viewed as something "folksy" is now viewed as high art.

What is the biggest mistake brides make and undermine their henna experience? A bride should trust the artist to create from the heart. A sophisticated bride wants a custom mehndi pattern, not something that has already gone viral on Pinterest.

What are some tips you can give to brides so they can have the most out of their henna experience? If you can, schedule your bridal mehndi for the morning, or even the day prior to your mehndi party. It's very important for the bride to sit perfectly still in order for the artist to do their best work. Then on the day of your party, you can dance and socialize without worrying about messing up your henna. That quiet time you spend with the mehndi artist, may be the only relaxing part of your whole wedding week. Enjoy it! Visit HennaLounge.com to learn more about Darcy Vasudev.

Are You ‘Fit’ For

Marriage? By Taslim Jaffer

O

nce the magical date has been set, there is a huge pile of decisions to be made before you can officially tie the knot! With the benefits of fitness being decreased stress and increased happiness and energy, there are important reasons to make it a priority during this exciting

time of preparation. We’ve curated some simple ideas you can implement to make it happen! Overall, the idea is to make healthy choices throughout the day. Whether your goal is a particular dress size or confidence in meeting the challenge of planning your perfect wedding, keep these 5 tips in mind:

1

There’s no better time to start a healthy lifestyle with your future spouse than now. Develop habits of regular exercise as a couple that will take you far into your new life together. This could be as simple as brisk walks around local parks, or neighbourhoods. You have to discuss wedding plans anyway, right? Instead of doing it over dessert and coffee, put on your running shoes and get outside. Exercise sparks creativity and boosts those feel-good hormones – it could help you work out some of those tricky wedding details! Or join a gym together and make one of your date nights a workout session. Add some fun to the challenge! Set a target number of exercise hours in a week; whoever makes their target gets to enjoy a meal made by the other person!

132 Traditions By DARPAN

2

Grab fruits, veggies and nuts as snacks, instead of sugar-laden granola bars. The convenience of something that is ready to consume out of a wrapper can often sway our choices. Be one step ahead of the game by pre-cutting veggies and keeping them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Do the same with fruits. An apple is much more inviting to eat when you can pull slices out of a container rather than trying to manage a whole one in between meetings. Buy nuts without shells that are easy to pop into your mouth and give you a protein boost to stave off the mid-day hunger pangs.

3

Stay hydrated throughout the day. Develop a system of opting for water (rather than other dehydrating beverages or sugary sodas) that works for you. A pitcher on your desk at work could be just the reminder you need to drink up when you are unable to rip yourself away from the task at hand. Keeping a stainless steel or glass water bottle in your car could also help (avoid plastic bottles as those contain chemicals that leach into your water, especially in a hot car.) This habit takes time to develop, so start now! Every cell in your body will thank you – and your skin will look radiant when you walk down the aisle.

4

Eating out can do a number on your waistline and your overall energy level. Often the foods we order in restaurants are heavy on sodium and fat; the portions can also be greater than we need to consume. This being the case, get creative in the kitchen! Do this solo or as a couple, or even start a group among your friends. Take turns trying and serving new recipes. Compile a binder of favourites; by the time you are married, you will have a huge repertoire of dishes to cook for each other.

5

Last, but certainly not least, keep in mind that wellness is a mental thing, too. Eating well, keeping hydrated and staying active are pieces of a larger puzzle. Included in that is a calm, positive outlook. To facilitate some zen during one of the most stressful times you have encountered, set aside quiet time doing whatever it is that makes you happy from the inside out. What are your hobbies? What do you do purely for fun? Those activities shouldn’t stop when you get engaged, even if it doesn’t include your significant other. In fact, maintaining your individuality does as much for the health of your marriage as it does for you, personally. So, in the busy-ness of it all, don’t forget to stake a claim on your own time and space. This will help bring your best ‘you’ to your marriage.

Humayun Alamgir H

umayun Alamgir has been developing his own signature mix of royal moods for the sophisticated groom while also designing modern portraits for contemporary Pakistani men to take on.

Traditions 139 By DARPAN

Bridal Couture Week Hum Sitaray in Pakistan showcased Humayun Alamgir's latest sherwani collection with tones of black and gold on velvet pieces.

140

Designer

How has fashion evolved in Pakistan? We have witnessed a phenomenal shift in fashion's paradigm. The proof is that the general public has started taking keen interest in today's fashion trends. We are now taking fashion as a need or luxury in our daily life. People in Pakistan have become very particular about looking fashionable in the smallest of events.

What are you fascinated by at the moment? What really fascinates me today is the fact that the grooms of today have realized that the wedding is not just about the bride looking good. The same pressure is on the groom too. Men have started to become receptive towards the idea of heavy sherwanis. The increasing trust in the local market is commendable and is a promising sign.

How would you define the Humayun Alamgir man? Our tailored man would be a person easily recognizable, trendy and bold. I feel that time is the most precious commodity today and a man only has enough time to get dressed once for the entire day, that being said he should be adequately equipped for a meeting/lunch/get together or even a spontaneous dinner plan. It's all about being ready to face anything any time!

Best advice you’ve received? "History repeats itself and fashion is no different, create your own edge". This was an advice given to me by a very close friend of mine and I could not agree more with this analysis. I don't say what we offer is not available anywhere else, we just try to do it better! Enjoy it!

The runway was transformed into an elegant garden to showcase the exquisite collection only to be cherished by art and fashion aficionadas. Bal has described this collection as a tribute to the beauty of wildlife, birds and flowers, and also the artisans and craftsmen of India. In a statement released about the collection, Bal mentions “All the art & fashion in the world isn’t enough. There should be more fashion

and less world, more ideas and less time. I see art in everything. Not just in squares of space hanging on walls or chiseled edges of stone or scrambled letters on pages of books. I see art in forms that might not be conventional or preconceived of what it’s meant to be. If you believe in the honesty of art, I believe you will find it anywhere and everywhere. In a thread or yarn on a canvas, on a street, on a sidewalk. Most importantly you will find it in your mind.”

Design Inspired by Innovation, Creativity & Belief

How has your work evolved since you launched your label? What can brides and grooms expect from 2016 in bridal fashion? Wedding is one of the most important moments for a couple. A bride and groom should look the best on this day. I feel a bride should be adorned with beauty, grace, elegance and sophistication on her wedding. A proper three piece lehenga is a must have for very Indian bride. A bride should go for a vibrant colour which brightens up the mood of the person and the occasions. While they look beautiful on their D-day it is equally important that the bride chooses the rest of her wedding trousseau with equal care and attention. Her trousseau should include heavy and light saris, beautiful salwar-kameez, anarkalis and chudhidars.

For me, innovation, creativity and belief are the three key elements that I have continued to focus on. Designs gets obsolete every season and today the audience/customer is very fashion conscious. It is vital you continue to be innovative and be creative with your work, otherwise you will not survive in the long run.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your designs? I am fascinated by flowers and pearls lately, and this is translated into intricate texturizing embroidery technique for my upcoming collection.

Choosing the right option for your wedding

Bow Tie Vs.

Neck Tie By Joseph A. Federico

Y

our wedding should be special, that is easy enough to comprehend. However, long gone are the days where formal wear is a unanimous “must,” and grooms meet their wives-to-be at their homes for a long procession. This is a new era – a time for the bride and GROOM, especially, to take on a life of their own and as a couple. And it all starts at the wedding reception. If you choose to sport a bow tie for your reception, be sure it is funky. And, remember, is has to be an 'actual' bow tie; none of this pre-made business. Bright colours, sexy patterns (of fire trucks, flowers, and mustaches) should adorn your neck. A bow tie says you are easy going, that you are in control and going places. You are chill. And the kind of man who sports a bow tie should also be sporting a welltailored suit from Wings+Horns. It will be a great match, trust us.

166

167

5

Plus, a bow tie is less casual. If you wear one, your wedding party can also sport them, or, if you would like to be the center of attention on your big day, they could wear matching neck ties. Which, matter of fact, brings us to our second option. Neck ties are more formal, which most men wear on their wedding

day. It is a tradition that is old as time; and if you sport one of these bad boys, you are nodding to that tradition, and classiness. You may also wear a thicker neck tie. The thicker ties are a nod to the 1960s and 1970s, where business men had to look their best at all times of the day. Truthfully, wear a neck tie that is a solid color: grey, pink, red, so on and so forth. You may match your blushing bride, but that may be too old school, don’t you think? Have your groomsmen wear neck ties, too, but different shades of your original color. Stick together, just differently. Feel us? Bow tie or neck tie, be the groom of her dreams by having your true style on your wedding day. You won’t regret either choice.

Getting there We surveyed a few sites and currently the best way to travel from Vancouver is by WestJet through Toronto or Calgary. Spend the night in Toronto and you’ll be refreshed and ready to feel the sunshine on your face, or go through Calgary and take a nap on the beachside. From there, a quick flight or boat ride will get you out to each island.

Nassau and Paradise Island Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas and is on a 21-mile long Island with its main harbor protected by Paradise Island. Over 200,000 people call the island home, many living right in Nassau. You will find plenty of duty-free shopping, casinos, night life and resorts in Nassau and Paradise Island has a plethora of activities awaiting you. You can choose just to do relatively nothing and relax at your resort while enjoying your new marital status. The beaches are perfect for a casual stroll, but if you prefer to get pampered instead, there are fantastic couple massages available.

Island. From casinos, golf courses and spas, to water-parks, nightclubs and fine dining, Atlantis has it all covered. The only disadvantage (if you consider it one) - it is rather family friendly, so depending on the time of year you’ll run into some young ones. For a more European feel, the popular adult-only Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island is considered one of the most elegant all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. Its amenities are top of the line and Sandals even has its own offshore island with two beaches- one for quiet sunbathing & snorkeling and one for water sports. Meals will mostly be covered since you’ll likely be at an all-inclusive, but for those looking for an ultimate fine dining experience in Nassau, One & Only Ocean Club’s Dune is a must. High above the white sand bluff looking out at the ocean, you’ll dine on a Bahamian-influenced cuisine created by Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

To Do Why not take up diving as a pre-wedding bonding project and then practice your new-found skills beneath the Bahamas waves; those less adventurous may want to snorkel. There are spectacular coral reefs, shipwrecks and all sorts of tropical fish and marine

animals to explore. Boat tours leave almost hourly; choose from a fishing adventure to a leisurely catamaran ride. Many of the other islands are less than an hour away, so you can head out for a day trip and easily experience another side of this country. Other than that, you have plenty of historic sites to visit, a brewery and rum distillery, eco tours, culinary tours and even horseback riding for you and your partner.

The Exumas A 40-minute flight from Nassau takes you to the vastly different Exumas. As opposed to Nassau, Georgetown, Great Exumas’ largest city, has a population of less than four figures. The Exumas include an archipelago of 365 cays and

islands, each offering a unique Bahamian experience.

Stay Grand Isle Resort & Spa is situated on a mile-long beach on Emerald Bay on Great Exumas. It’s a laid back property consisting of less

than 80 villas, but it’s highly rated and you’ll find one of the Bahamas’ most romantic restaurants on site as well as the regions top-rated spas and plenty of ocean activities just minutes away.

To Do One of the most interesting activities here involves swimming with a group of domesticated pigs, but there are plenty of native Bahamian creatures to gaze upon. Other ocean activities include kitesurfing and boating. For a truly unique nature experience, take a kayak tour of nearby Moriah Harbour and you’ll find mangroves and creeks; be sure to bring your binoculars for bird watching, both sea birds and raptors.
