BIG GREEN WEEK IS CREATED BY

WELCOME TO

BIG GREEN WEEK 2016 Bristol’s annual festival of sustainability is back! Every year, Big Green Week celebrates Bristol’s social and environmental projects and the people who make them possible. In doing so, we help to build momentum towards a greener, better Bristol. We’ve a stellar lineup of events to inspire, involve, empower and educate, and we hope that you will join us. Our theme for 2016 is ‘smart living’, those small everyday decisions which make a positive impact, collectively adding up to make a big difference. Part of this is championing businesses that we think are doing their bit and in the process we’re making green easy. Read more about smart living on page 9 from BBC Radio 4’s Costing the Earth Producer Martin Poyntz-Roberts. From pop-ups to exhibitions to workshops, there really is something for everyone. SMAR With the help of our sponsors, Love the Future (Big Green Week’s parent company) led a group of cyclists to Paris in November 2015, to fly the flag for Bristol at the 21st Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP21). Big Green Week is all about having fun; celebrating the good stuff that Bristol’s green scene has to offer. It is all for a very serious purpose, however, one that is becoming ever more urgent. This March, the average temperature smashed through a 100-year global record. February was also above the long term average, and 2015 was the hottest year, but if temperatures continue then 2016 is going to surpass it. Of course, shortterm data has to be looked at in the context of long-term trends, but many scientists now agree that their research may have underestimated the combined effect of human impacts on global temperature. Thankfully, 2015 was also the year that global leaders finally seemed to recognise the clear and present danger, coming together in Paris to agree a process for limiting man-made climate change to less

than two degrees. They have their work cut out, as March’s temperature was 1.07 degrees higher, and the pace of change is accelerating rather than getting slower.

Closer to home, and as a direct result of the Paris climate talks, Bristol renewed its commitment as the UK’s leading green city by extending its carbon target from an 80% reduction to become a zero carbon city by 2050. It is a huge challenge, but one that Bristol is well on the way towards achieving, having already reduced its carbon footprint by over 15% in recent years. There is much more to do and we can all do our part. Our response to COP21 is to establish our smart living scheme to help make the right choices; choices that will come back to hug you. Over the next few pages you will find top tips, three for each of our nine themes, from an easy change that costs virtually nothing through to more significant changes that might need some investment of time and money. Bristol: A smart, liveable city for the future? A ‘smart city’ is a functioning, resilient, sustainable city for the future. It’s a city that gathers data and uses technology to improve the lives of those living there. Sounds like a nice dream? It could be closer than you think, says Martin Poyntz-Roberts. A multimillion-pound experiment is underway in Bristol to create a ‘smart city’, and so to find out more I spoke to Paul Wilson. He’s Managing Director of Bristol is Open, a joint venture between the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council. ‘Cities are where the economy happens, where people live, they are centres of culture, but they are also where pollution is created. We tend to identify strongly with the city in which we live, sometimes more than the nation,’ Paul told me. ‘As a result, we can manage problems more easily at city level.’ Around a million people live and work in and around Bristol. By 2050 its predicted that 70% of the world’s population will be living in cities. But as cities continue to grow so will their problems: congestion, pollution and overcrowding. A ‘smart city’ aims to reduce these problems. According to Paul, the key is to take a technological approach. Bristol is Open is all about creating a programmable city. Large amounts of data can be collected. Once visualised, that data can be used to programme technology to improve the way the city’s infrastructure functions.

Perhaps the number one complaint of Bristolians is congestion. I asked Paul how monitoring of data can fix this. ‘Of the 50,000 car journeys in Bristol each day, 85% are single-occupancy cars. With more connectivity we can streamline connected vehicles to ease the flow of traffic,’ he said. ‘It’s not that cars are bad; the idea that I have to own my own car is beginning to lose sway. Using a car pool is becoming more common, as is the idea that I might use electric vehicles or electric bikes.’ The concept of giving up vast swathes of personal data may sound scary, but many of us already do. ‘If giving up data on your journey helped to reduce congestion, would that be upsetting? I think everyone wants to sort out congestion.’ With reduced congestion, a smart city could also be a greener city. I asked Paul what the aim of the Bristol is Open project is over the coming decades. His answer was simple: ‘I think the goal is to make a liveable city, a sustainable city, a resilient city and a happy place.’

Could You Help Transform Your Community? Carmel McQuaid Head of Sustainable Business, Marks & Spencer

There’s one thing that every Big Green Week event has in common, year on year. Whether you’re watching a magical theatrical performance on the harbourside, or a lively debate at Hamilton House, there’s always a team of friendly volunteers, full of energy, who make the festival run like clockwork with a smile on their faces. From being part of Big Green Week in previous years, Marks & Spencer has always loved the buzz of the festival and the people who make it great. That’s why we’re so excited to be able to bring our nationwide programme, Spark Something Good, to events and projects all throughout Big Green Week. The initiative, which we started back in July 2015 in partnership with Neighbourly, celebrates communities all over the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It’s our way of doing something good in the communities that we live and work in, and bringing groups, individuals and organisations together to spark something good. With the introduction of Big Green Week’s smart living themes this year, it’s great to see how we can all get involved in the festival in lots of different ways. We love that one of these themes is community spirit, as this is exactly what Spark Something Good champions, and we’re pleased to be

able to enable Bristolians to engage more with community spirit across the city through Spark Something Good. Our volunteers transform the community projects and events they work on, and we can’t wait to bring this initiative to Bristol to contribute to the diverse, exciting and thought-provoking events that are in this year’s programme. We’ll be working with 24 community projects and events to make sure this festival is the best yet. So this year, why not join in and spark something good? To find out how you can get involved visit www.neighbourly.com/mandsvolunteer We look forward to seeing you!

Carmel McQuaid

June is set to be an action-packed month for beautiful Bristol! Big Green Week 2016 is teaming up with its ‘Community Champion’ Marks & Spencer for the Bristol leg of the M&S Spark Something Good campaign. Alongside Neighbourly – the social network for social good – residents will help transform 24 community projects over seven days of volunteering. To date, six UK cities have sparked something good, galvanising the support and enthusiasm of M&S employees, customers and individuals to transform 24 local projects. In London alone, 400 amazing volunteers delivered lasting benefits for over 5500 people across the city. We know that Spark Something Good Bristol will be extra-special – our city already has an abundance of fantastic community projects! This is a great opportunity for you, your friends and family to make a real difference, help your community and have fun, while raising awareness of the huge difference these projects make in our communities. Here are just a few of the events taking place throughout the week. To find out about all 24 projects and how to get involved, visit: www.neighbourly.com/mandsvolunteer

Join Making for Charity sewing Syringe Driver Bags With your help, we aim to make 100 syringe driver bags from M&S fabric décor which will be donated to local hospitals and hospices. The day is split into four, two hour slots where volunteers will be provided pre-cut kits that will be sewn into bags. Join The Marine Conservation Society at the Big Beach Clean In it, on it, under it – however you love the sea, you can support MCS by helping get rid of unwanted beach rubbish and work out how to stop it getting there in the first place. It’s great fun, so feel free to bring your family and friends along.

Help City to Sea raise awareness of plastic pollution

We’ll be clearing litter and collating data at our local rivers to reduce the amount of plastic litter flowing from Bristol into the Severn Estuary. Our goal is to challenge the way everyday folk use and dispose of single-use plastics. Spray your way to change with The Yellowfish Project

The Yellowfish Project involves spraying yellow fish symbols with non-toxic paint onto storm drains. This is to help educate people that our roadside storm drains directly enter our rivers and that any harmful substances have a direct impact on the health of our river environments.

Volunteers will help us create a blend of productive trees and shrubs that provide edible fruits and nuts as well as habitats for nature. You’ll be laying beds, installing irrigation and landscaping, enabling a wide diversity of Bristol to access the natural world. We always have lots of fun doing it!

Help Trinity Arts Project turn our garden into an outdoor kitchen

We’re renovating our outdoor kitchen space, enabling us to deliver our programme of gardening and cooking activities to local residents of all ages and backgrounds. At Trinity Community Arts we want everyone to have the opportunity to access and shape arts and culture in Bristol.

Calling M&S visual merchandisers to help Oxfam get creative

M&S visual merchandisers will work with the Oxfam Shop team to utilise the unique items that have been donated by the public and produce a visually attractive window display. Host a party to remember with The Royal Voluntary Service Come along and help us host a special tea party! You’ll help put on a party to remember, serving tea and cakes alongside

The Redcliffe Gardening Club began in 2015 to help local people to make positive changes to their environment. The aim is for members to spend more time outdoors gardening together with other local people. We’ll be transforming a neglected area on the estate into a nature garden for residents to enjoy.

Help the Conservation Volunteers change a local landscape

The day will be spent constructing a boardwalk and path in the Purdown area – you’ll be helping to open up the area and create a pathway to enable easier access for everyone to enjoy this beautiful area. This project aims to bring people and places together to create happy, healthy and connected communities for everyone. Saying no to waste. Period. Susie Hewson, founder of Natracare This year, Big Green Week is asking us to make small changes that will make a big difference to the planet. With nine smart living themes, there are plenty of ways to get involved and commit to behaviour change that will have a positive impact on the world around us. While there are the often cited ways to reduce your impact - turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth, unplug appliances if you’re not using them, recycle – sometimes we need to shake up our perceptions of what is wasteful, and how our behaviour can change. That’s what we do at Natracare – we question the way things are done, and pose alternatives to the way things always have been. Take plastic waste, for example. Most of us wouldn’t dream of using or throwing away plastic unnecessarily – especially with the 5p plastic bag tax. But traditional feminine hygiene products being made of 90% polyethylene (plastic!) means we do just that - with the average woman using 17,000 pads in her life-time, this adds up to the equivalent of 4,857 plastic carrier bags per woman. With Natracare you are saying no to plastic and yes to pads and panty liners that are made from only sustainably sourced, organic and natural plant derived materials that are totally plasticfree, fragrance free and chlorine free. When using Natracare pads and panty liners women can rest assured that the only thing touching their skin is certified organic 100% cotton.

to chlorine bleaching, a process which exposes women and the environment to toxic dioxin, and heavy metal residuals from the dyes used to colour the withdrawal cord. That’s why we create 100% natural and ethical feminine hygiene products, that look after the environment as well as the women who use them. It’s easy to not even think about the hidden waste in our everyday lives, but luckily events like Big Green Week open up these conversations and reveal the information needed to make informed decisions that are better for the environment, and better for us. Making the switch to environmentally friendly products is just one of the thousands of ways you can help reduce your impact. Could Big Green Week be the perfect excuse for you to make the change?
