Two green reporters and rivals working for the Washington Post, Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman), research the botched 1972 burglary of the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex.
They believe beautiful lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) may be connected with the case, and Beaumont finds himself becoming drawn into her dark, twisted world, where he encounters sexually depraved psychopath Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper).
With the help of a mysterious source, code-named Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), the two reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Despite dire warnings about their safety, the duo follows the money all the way to the top.
Blending psychological horror with film noir, Blue Velvet is widely regarded as one of Lynch’s major works and one of the greatest films of the 1980s: in 2008 it was chosen by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest American mystery films ever made.

Wed 9 Aug 7pm
Conducted by Robin Ticciati and directed by Claus Guth, Mozart’s opera delivers all of the sublime musical beauty and heart-tugging humanity we expect of him.
The decay of Rome reaches violent depths in Shakespeare’s most bloody play.
Loosely based on the life of the Roman Emperor Titus, La Clemenza di Tito distills the suspense of Don Giovanni, the warmth of The Marriage of Figaro, and the nobility of The Magic Flute into one powerful parable of love and friendship, vengeance and mercy. Australian tenor Steve Davislim makes his Glyndebourne debut as Tito, with Alice Coote as Vitellia and Kate Lindsey as Sesto. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
Titus is a ruler exhausted by war and loss, who relinquishes power but leaves Rome in disorder. Rape, cannibalism and severed body parts fill the moral void at the heart of this corrupt society. Shakespeare’s gory revenge tragedy presents us with murder as entertainment, and, as the body count piles up, poses questions about the nature of sexuality, family, class and society. Blanche McIntyre returns to the RSC to direct Shakespeare’s brutal revenge tragedy after her debut directing The Two Noble Kinsmen (2016).

Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Great Britain) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress awardwinning role. A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone’s radical production of Lorca’s achingly powerful masterpiece. The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at the Young Vic and critics called it ‘an extraordinary theatrical triumph’ (The Times) and ‘stunning, searing, unmissable’. Set in contemporary London, Piper’s portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax.

On 14 September, experience Carmen like never before – recorded live on the floating stage during the Bregenz Festival. As with their previous spectacular productions, you can expect the staging of this classic tale to have an extravagantly original and innovative design, with the waters of the lake being used as an extension of the stage.
A full-throttle war play that revels in the sweat of the battlefield, Coriolanus transports us back to the emergence of the republic of Rome.
Performed on the breath-taking Lake Constance in Bregenz , Austria and captured live exclusively for cinemas, George Bizet’s Carmen is a story of passion, destiny and obsession. The French composer’s opera is most famous for its Spanish melodies, including the Flower Song, Habanera and the Toreador Song.
Caius Martius Coriolanus is a fearless soldier but a reluctant leader. His ambitious mother attempts to carve him a path to political power, but he struggles to change his nature and do what is required to achieve greatness. In this new city state struggling to find its feet, where the gap between rich and poor is widening every day, Coriolanus must decide who he really is and where his allegiances lie. Rome Season Director, Angus Jackson, completes the Royal Shakespeare Company’s collection of Shakespeare’s Roman plays with a visceral production which sees Sope Dirisu (One Night in Miami, Donmar Warehouse, 2016) take on the title role.

About the *F Rating In 2014 less that 7% of the top 250 highest grossing films in the US were directed by women. This statistic led the Bath Film Festival to introduce the *F rating to recognise women working in film as director, writer or acting in their own right and not as a sideshow for male characters.
We return to the picturesque coast of Sicily and the Teatro Antico di Taormina where, every summer, this romantic and dramatic setting welcomes opera lovers from all over the world. 2017 is no exception, with the staging of Puccini’s La Bohème - the tragic love story of a young poet and a seamstress. This retelling of the timeless classic will enchant audiences with its intense melodic lyrics, original and refined harmony, instrumental light feel and nuances which are all unmistakable and unique.

A brand new silent film - a city symphony - which offers a poetic journey through the city of London. London Symphony is an artistic snapshot of the city as it stands today, and a celebration of its culture and diversity.
The classic 1920 German silent film version of Hamlet with live music from Lillian Henley.
A unique animated movie about the life and mysterious death of Vincent Van Gogh, Loving Vincent is the world’s first fully painted feature film and brings the great artist’s films to life to tell his remarkable story.
London Symphony was nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017.
Adapted from Shakespeare’s play and starring Danish silent film actress Asta Nielsen, this radical reimagining was directed by Svend Gade and Heinz Schall. In this interpretation, inspired by Dr. Edward P. Vining’s book The Mystery of Hamlet, Hamlet is born female and disguised as a male by her scheming mother to preserve the lineage. Lillian Henley originally trained as a performer and now composes music for film, theatre and other commissioned projects. She has written for both contemporary and silent films, and she shares a passion for both.
Every single frame of the film is an individual oil painting, hand painted by 125 professional artists from all over the world who came together to work on this incredible project.
