Painting the Town Red Susie Ramsay is your guide to Bristol’s Arts Trails Bristol is fast becoming recognised nationally as a creative hub for artists and businesses. This reputation is built on a vibrant and diverse local scene of independent shops, galleries and public spaces showcasing artists’ work. Over one weekend each year an area of the city takes it’s turn to present the work of artists living and working in that community. From the South Bank Arts Trail (Bedminster, Southville and Ashton), to the Front Room Arts Trail (Totterdown) and the West Bristol Arts Trail (Clifton, Redland and Hotwells) the events bring together local artists to open their homes, studios or exhibit their work in public venues. During a Trail weekend you will be able to view the work of hundreds of artists, including fine artists, photographers, potters, ceramicists, printmakers & sculptors. Each venue will be completely different; you may be viewing finished paintings, works in progress or watching artists
give demonstrations about their creative process. The Trails offer the public a unique opportunity to meet the artists in their studios, talk to them about their work and buy one-off works of art directly from them. One of the main attractions of the Trail weekends is to explore new parts of the city at a relaxed pace. Each Trail produces a map for the event where visitors can plan their day interspersed with stops at local shops, cafés and public spaces which are also exhibiting works. The Trails are free mini community festivals, and visitors are encouraged to leave their car at home and get around by foot, bicycle or public transport. It’s a truly unique way to explore the city and discover new artists. Susie exhibits at the West Bristol Arts Trail. Eat all about it! What’s been happening on the local food scene? When it comes to eating out we are spoiled for choice in Bristol and Bath. There’s a huge range of great restaurants, cafés, sandwich shops, burger bars and takeaways to choose from, and as you’ll discover over the next few pages many use locally grown fruit and veg, organic and free-range meat, locally produced dairy and sustainably-sourced fish. There are plenty of veggie and vegan options too, and it should not surprise you that loads of eateries in the region are also doing their bit for the planet by recycling and reusing whatever they can. Local heroes the Bath Pub Company go from strength to strength, having recently added the excellent Locksbrook Inn to their portfolio, while Bristol’s new Wapping Wharf development is particularly exciting, with restaurants from chefs Josh Eggleton, Elliott Lidstone and Larkin Cen launching soon. The city’s Harbourside is a great place for foodies to spend a day: why not kick off with brunch at Pieminister – try the wonderful Hashed-Up Skillet (British salt beef hash with West Country Cheddar,
topped with a poached egg and a side of toast and homemade smoky baked beans) – before picking up some fresh bread and pastries at the excellent Harbourside Market and then hopping over to check out the shops at Wapping Wharf? Stop for a coffee at Mokoko (who have just opened here after launching in Bath in 2014) or Little Victories, the new café from the team at Small Street Espresso, before continuing your culinary stroll. People are flocking to the city’s new food quarter to enjoy the smart takeaways, bars, coffee shops and the third branch of Bristol’s fabulous Better Food Company. With other recent arrivals like the Wild Beer Company, Brigstow Bar & Kitchen no more than a stone’s throw away and established favourites including the Olive Shed, Bordeaux Quay, Under the Stars and the Watershed close by there are plenty of places to call in to should you fancy a beer or something more substantial to eat. Whatever the time of day, whatever your mood and whatever dietary restrictions you may need to satisfy, there’s quite literally something for everyone.

Think local: eat local! You might think that you’re supporting local farmers when you do your weekly shop, yet roughly three-quarters of all fresh food sold in supermarkets comes from abroad, meaning that those lovely green beans in your shopping basket are more likely to have been sourced in Kenya than Keynsham. We may be helping support African farmers by buying their beans, but at what cost to the environment when the food on your plate has travelled thousands of miles to get there? The answer is simple: buy locally grown and produced food. Fresh, locally grown food is better for you and better for the planet. Supporting local food production helps to strengthen local economies by protecting small farms, local jobs, and local shops. Your local butcher, baker, greengrocer or deli could not exist without you. Farmer’s Markets are everywhere, and are a great way of supporting local producers. The family-run Hobbs House Bakery has been baking bread since the 1920s. Situated just north of Bristol, in the medieval market town of Chipping Sodbury, the bakery is home to over 20 master bakers who specialise in a range of breads, pastry and patisserie. Hobbs House Bakery produce a range of organic loaves as well as their famous and award-winning sourdough (produced from culture that has matured over 50 years), and Channel 4 viewers will no doubt recognise the names of Tom and Henry Herbert, the “Fabulous Baker Brothers,” who, alongside dad Trevor and older brother George, maintain the high standards at Hobbs House. From Heron’s Green Farm, overlooking Chew Valley Lake in Somerset, Luke Hasell has won accolades with The Story Organic Meats. The BBC Food and Farming Awards’ Outstanding Farmer of the Year finalist and Soil Association Gold Award winner produces traditionally hung, 100% pasture fed organic meat that is tender with a delicious depth in flavour. ‘We have always believed in the mantra “Better for the Animals, Better for Us”,’ Luke explains. ‘All of our beef, chicken, lamb and pork are reared ethically and organically. Our cattle are fed only natural grass diets and are free to roam and graze the lush green pastures around Chew Magna. We aim to be as sustainable as possible, carefully managing our land to enhance the environment for future generations.’
Andy Jeffery took over Home Farm at Farrington Gurney in 1992 from his dad who had held the tenancy since the 1960’s. The Farm is surrounded by 400 acres of countryside growing wheat, maize and grass to feed the animals, and 60 acres of organic land on which they grow vegetables. Andy, his wife Tish and their family have a passion for doing the right thing in the way they run the farm. The growers, weeders and pickers are all given the highest work environment and conditions, the produce is certified as organic by the Soil Association, and the prices of the fresh produce are competitive with non-organic supermarket prices. The multi-award winning Farrington’s Farm Shop makes for a fantastic family day out and is less than half an hour from Bristol and Bath. There is a shopping village on site including a play barn, gift shop, specialist bakery, fishmongers and café that has virtually everything freshly made on site. Michael Wiper, chief brewer at Wiper & True, fell in love with brewing at home - learning his craft on a kitchen stove with pots, pans and raw ingredients scattered all around him. Whilst he pays respect to the traditional craft of beer making he makes no secret about his penchant for experimentation - playing with new ways of doing things. Whether that’s roasting his own malts, adding wild ingredients, or ageing beer on different kinds of wood the aim is to create something truly special. ‘Water, malt, yeast and hops. Four simple ingredients that give eternal possibilities. We explore, harness and celebrate them to create something extraordinary,’ Michael explains. ‘Whilst our apparatus may have become more sophisticated, our thirst for experimentation and enjoying our craft remains the driving force behind Wiper and True.’ Since 2014, over 2,000 Bristol and Bath residents have discovered fresh-range.com, the online store delivering direct from all of the above producers and dozens more. fresh-range specialise in freshly picked, high quality, lower priced local produce, and deliver across Bristol and Bath. ‘Customers love the direct supply-chain that fresh-range provides because it means fresher foods at lower prices,’ says founder Richard Osborn. By reducing food miles, cutting out middle-men and delivering food immediately, fresh-range keeps costs down, and you can be assured that the dairy farmer you are supporting receives a fair price for his (or her) milk. It’s simple, respectful and allows producers to sell to thousands of new customers around the region. Tel: 0117 332 2813 or order online at fresh-range.com

Retrofitting – A Hot Topic Top tips for home heating from energy saving expert Mukti Mitchell ‘In the UK, the price of heating fuels has risen by 10% a year for the last decade and it now costs over £1,500 a year to heat a typical home,’ home-energy expert Mukti Mitchell reveals. ‘We pump hot water into our radiators all winter while the heat floods out through the windows, walls and roofs.’ Retrofitting old homes with good insulation can massively reduce the cost of your annual fuel bill.
1: Fit radiator enhancers. These inexpensive heat-reflective panels that stop heat going into walls and instead reflect it into the room, are estimated to save 7% on heating.
Here are Mukti’s top tips for keeping your home warm this winter.
3: Fit thermal lining to your curtains. These will halve the heat lost through your windows.
2: Seal up the gaps in your floorboards and skirtings. DIY with flexible rubber seals from draughtex.co.uk or professionally fitted marine deck caulking.
4: Draught-proof your doors and windows. 30% of household heat is lost this way. Old properties need ventilation though, so only treat doors and windows with noticeable draughts. 5: Top up your loft insulation to 300mm/12” thick. Typically 10% of your home’s heat is lost through your loft. This is reduced to just 3% after a top-up. 6: Double or secondary glazing can save up to 70% of the heat lost through windows. The solutions above are the “low hanging fruit” of insulation and can cut heat loss by up to 50% in older properties. Savings in fuel bills can equate to a financial return of 10-20% per year, which is outstanding in todays economic climate.
And thorough insulation saves around 2 tonnes of CO2 per home per year so is fantastic for the planet. Other, more expensive, ways to improve your home’s thermal efficiency include Room-In-Roof insulation (fitting insulation boards on the inside of sloping ceilings), External Wall Insulation - ideal for rendered or slate hung walls; Internal Wall Insulation – an effective solution if you are unable to use EWI (for example, if your home is listed); and Floor Insulation, easiest if you have a cellar, although it can also be retrofitted below floorboards. Mukti Mitchell has won awards for eco-yacht design, carbon calculators and advanced secondary glazing systems, and is the director of CosyHome Company www.cosyhomecompany.co.uk

Did you kno w that Using a bowl to wash up rather th an a running ta p could save £ 30 a year on yo ur energy bill?
Community Action on Energy Energy is an important aspect of all our lives. We use energy, such as electricity and gas, to heat our homes and buildings, heat water, cook our food and much more. However, our current energy system does not work well for many people and is damaging our planet. Bristol Energy Network is an umbrella organisation for individuals and community groups with an interest in energy in Bristol and the surrounding area. BEN has over twenty member groups working towards a fair, sustainable energy system. They are involved in many different energy projects, including assisting people struggling to pay their energy bills, advising people on how to reduce their energy use, and raising money for and installing communityowned renewable energy projects (e.g. installing solar panels on community buildings). If your community has an interest in developing community energy projects or you would like to get involved, contact us on coordinator@bristolenergynetwork.org / 0787 179 1679 www.bristolenergynetwork.org www.twitter.com/BristolEnergyNw - www.facebook.com/BristolEnergyNetwork
Bristol Waste Company is your local recycling, waste collection and street cleansing company. We are committed to working in partnership with the people of Bristol to help all communities recycle more and throw away less. Our aim is for Bristol to be a cleaner and tidier city which is happier and healthier for all those who live, work and study here – and, of course, our many visitors.
We employ 450 people who make 17 million scheduled collections every year, operate 180 vehicles, collect 140,000 tonnes of waste and recycling per annum – of which we send 53,000 tonnes for composting or recycling. We clean 800 miles of streets and footpaths and deal with 180,000 ad hoc job requests and service queries annually. As a city, Bristol currently recycles 43% of its waste. That’s pretty good for a big city but we know we can do better. And by doing better we could save Bristol money – disposing of waste costs money but recycling can actually earn money because the familiar materials that package the things we buy every week are valuable. If you live in Bristol you can help us increase our recycling rate by separating out your bottles, cans, paper in to your recycling boxes - which we collect every week. Our crews can work more quickly if things are in the right boxes. As well as all your plastics and cardboard you might not know that we also take textiles, shoes, batteries and even old pairs of glasses. If you’re able to use your food waste caddy too we can turn your leftovers into fuel and fertiliser.

Independents for Bristol
Sarah Thorp goes shopping on Gloucester Road
Bristol citizens are a highly creative, independently minded & environmentally aware bunch and Gloucester Road is a fantastic reflection of this. Dubbed ‘The Last Great British High Street’ by The Independent, Gloucester Road offers a wealth of choice not seen on a standard British high street. Stretching from Stokes Croft to Horfield Common, you can get everything you need walking up this vibrant street. Art galleries and gift shops offer a huge range of work by Bristol artists. There are bike shops, furniture makers, florists, health and beauty salons, clothes shops, toyshops, charity shops and good oldfashioned hardware stores. Greengrocers, health food stores, butchers, bakers and fishmongers have everything you need to create a tasty meal at home, and a fantastic mix of independent cafés, restaurants, gastro pubs and bars offer
great locally sourced food from breakfast to late night. Choose from ice cream, fresh juices and cappuccinos to stone baked pizzas, vegetarian wraps, Indian, Chinese, Thai and lots more in between. Cafés and bars spill out on to wide pavements - a great excuse to sit and watch the world go by – while pubs and bars host live music most nights of the week. Not only is Gloucester Road a great place to shop, eat and drink, it looks great too. Independent traders love to be creative with their signs and window displays, while Bristol’s trademark street artists have added to the vibrant mix and plans are afoot to bring in more art with large street banners. Recently, the central part of Gloucester Road (known as Glos Rd Central) linked up with the Avon Wildlife Trust to install planters full of shrubs and flowers outside their shops. Not only have
[62]
the plants improved the ambiance on the street but the bees and butterflies enjoy them too. BBC Springwatch came to film the installation and talk to organisers: watch Episode 12 of Springwatch to learn more. Free annual events such as the Glos Rd Central Mayfest (1st Sat in May), Christmas Street Party (1st Thurs in Dec) and the North Bristol Art Trail (last weekend in Nov) add to the buzz. Gloucester Road is a vibrant example of how shopping can be more than a schlep to the supermarket; it can be a fun, social excursion. Supporting local traders means keeping our high streets alive, maintaining a friendly neighbourhood and a positive future for us all. So leave the car at home, get here by bike or bus and spend the day ambling up and down Gloucester Road!
Sarah Thorp is a member of the North Bristol Artists and owns Room 212, a shop & gallery of Bristol artists. She organised the planting at Glos Rd Central and is committed to promoting the BCR Neighbourhood Partnership Street Scene and shopping local. www.room212.co.uk The businesses in Glos Rd Central include Moodles, Fig, Odd Sox, Café Dream, Millards, Roll Quick, Joe’s Bakery, Artemis, Room 212, Paper Plane, Pawsons Fruit and Veg, Dave Giles Butcher, the Chimp House, Boston Tea Party, Pizzarova, Lona Grillhouse, Catch the Moment, Metro Café, Shoe Express, Osna Therapy, XPress Printing, Marialina, The Golden Lion, Lunar Optical, Bishopston Fish Bar, Fizz, Icon Beauty, Vets for Pets, Crawfords, Venus Bar, Bristol Buddhist Centre, La De Dah, Bristol Furniture Works, Bristol Tools, and the 212 Eco House.

Independents for Bath Take a look at what’s on offer from Bath’s independent stores Bath is one of the UK’s top locations for a spot of retail therapy, with tourists flocking to the historic city to enjoy the mix of well-known high street brands and high-end boutique stores that you will seldom see outside of London. Yet the city has always enjoyed a reputation for its independent shops, and Bath is also home to a number of quirky gift shops, imaginative homeware stores, delicious delis, fabulous galleries, jewellers, antiques emporiums, arts and craft shops as well as several wonderful independent bookshops. Unlike the bustling retail hubs we have all become used to, shopping in Bath can be a very pleasant experience: much of the city centre is pedestrianised and, with most shops in easy walking distance of each other, the city’s shops are easily explored on foot. As an added bonus, there are plenty of great cafés, pubs and restaurants should you need to take a break from all of that retail therapy - and there’s plenty of choice if you’re looking for a veggie, vegan or gluten-free snack to keep you going.
Walcot Street, Bath’s bohemian arts quarter, offers vintage and retro clothing, interiors shops, great food and is home to the city’s only co-operatively owned pub, The Bell. At the other end of the city SouthGate hosts more than 50 bigname shops, and round every corner you’ll find something to interest. Oldfiled Park has it’s own distinct character, and is well worth the two minute train journey, with grocers, butchers, cafés and the obligatory independent book shop. Bath is home to the UK’s first regular Farmer’s Market, which takes place each Saturday in Green Park Station, and a number of excellent delis as well as the thriving and historic Guildhall Market - the oldest shopping venue in the city - with traditional stalls selling just about everything you could need. Late in the year the city becomes a magical place for festive shopping, with the Bath Christmas Market offering over 150 retailers in their distinctive, Swiss-style chalets packed with handmade gifts and local produce.

Once again, the cover of this year’s Green Guide to Bristol and Bath is by talented local artist Jenny Urquhart.
Jenny’s paintings often reflect her love of the South West coastline and the British countryside. She adores her hometown of Bristol and her instantly recognisable cityscapes, featuring hot air balloons and the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, are a familiar sight locally. In 2015 Jenny painted two Shaun the Sheep statues, Lambmark Larry and Baa-loon, as part of the Shaun in the City campaign to raise money for charity. You can still buy copies of her print ‘Sheep in London Town’, which she produced for the Shaun in the City Trail, and every penny helps The Grand Appeal to support sick children in Bristol Children’s Hospital. Jenny has a growing range of limited edition prints, cards, soft furnishings and also undertakes commissions. You can find more than 20 of her best-loved images in her new Bristol colouring book – fun for all ages! You can buy Jenny’s work in galleries and shops around Bristol or direct from her own website - www.jennysgallery.co.uk

Fresh Food for Thought from
The Community Farm in Chew Magna is a community-owned social enterprise, growing and selling organic food through a box delivery service. More than 500 local people share ownership of the farm and have a say in how it is run. The aim of the farm is to help people develop a better understanding of where their food comes from, reconnect with the land on which their food is grown, and learn more about sustainable farming. Want to get your hands dirty? The Community Farm provides hands-on experience of organic farming through events, away days from work, school visits, workshops and volunteering. Volunteering is an integral part of The Community Farm. Through volunteering you can get first-hand experience of organic growing and take a fresh look at environmental sustainability. If you’d like to volunteer, you can join one of their Community Farmer Days
(one-day volunteer events) or come out to the fields on weekdays on a regular basis. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in the farm work, share knowledge and gain experience of organic growing. Children can be surprisingly picky about vegetables. Connecting kids with food growing encourages them to be more adventurous: let them dig and they will eat! Children learn best when they’re having fun. Through spending more time outdoors and interacting with the crops from germination through to harvest they learn to associate food with where it has come from and truly appreciate the journey that food takes to their plates. For more information about school visits, children’s activities, vegetable boxes or volunteering go to www.thecommunityfarm.co.uk
