/T2Movie

Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to the only place he can ever call home. They are waiting for him: Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle). Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO® Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the selfdescribed leading man of that ensemble - LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Will Arnet is back as the voice of the caped crusader and is joined by newcomers Michael Cera as Robin and Rosario Dawson as Supergirl.

THE CRYING GAME (18)

DIR. MICHAEL MANN I 2001 I US I 35mm

DIR. NEIL JORDAN I 1992 I UK

Will Smith and Jamie Foxx star in a film focussing on ten years in the life of boxer Muhammad Ali, featuring his capture of the heavyweight title from Sonny Liston, his conversion to Islam, criticism of the Vietnam War and banishment from boxing, his return to fight Joe Frazier in 1971, and his reclaiming the title in 1974’s Rumble in the Jungle. The film also touches on the social and political upheaval following the assassinations of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Crying Game explores themes of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality against the backdrop of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Smith and Jon Voight received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively.

The film is about the experiences of Fergus (Stephen Rea), a member of the IRA, his brief but meaningful encounter with Jody (Forest Whitaker) who is held prisoner by the group, and his unexpected romantic relationship with Jody’s girlfriend, Dil (Jaye Davidson) whom Fergus promised Jody he would protect. However, unexpected events force Fergus to decide what he wants for the future, and ultimately what his nature dictates he must do.

DREAMGIRLS

DIR. TAYLOR HACKFORD I 2004 I US I 35mm

DIR. BILL CONDON I 2006 I US I 35mm

The story of the life and career of the legendary rhythm and blues musician Ray Charles, from his humble beginnings in the South, where he went blind at age seven, to his meteoric rise to stardom during the 1950s and 1960s.

A trio of black female soul singers cross over to the pop charts in the early 1960s, facing their own personal struggles along the way.

Star Jamie Foxx received an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as well as the Golden Globe, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice awards, becoming the second actor to win all five major lead actor awards for the same performance.

(12)

Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name and starring BeyoncĂŠ Knowles and Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls takes inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and one of its star acts, The Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music through the eyes of a Detroit, Michigan girl group (the Dreams) and their manipulative record executive.

BRITAIN ON FILM

RAILWAYS Britain on Film Railways (U) It seems hard to imagine, but there was a time when railways in the UK were punctual, affordable, comfortable and even glamorous. The Curzon is taking you back to these halcyon days with Britain on Film: Railways, part of the ICO’s new archive tour in partnership with the BFI. This major new collection of rare, newly-digitised archive films charts the history of the UK’s railways and brings home the romance and heady freedoms offered by train travel as it expanded across the country in the early 20th century. The films document, not just the glories of the railway, but also the changing social, political and economic climates of the 20th century. Britain on Film: Railways includes John Betjeman’s lament on the very last British Railways steam service, hand-tinted colour views from the front of a train at Conway Castle in 1898, high-speed thrills with a driver’s eye view from London to Birmingham in just six minutes, famous trains from the pre-war Golden Age of Steam, a Victorian kiss, and more!

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars hits cinemas for one night only. Widely viewed as one of the greatest concert films ever made, D. A. Pennebaker’s 1973 film documents a now-infamous performance by David Bowie and his band at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1973. During the concert, Bowie shocked fans and media alike by announcing “it’s the last show we’ll ever do”. His declaration signalled the retirement of the Ziggy Stardust persona, and the end of a hugely influential chapter in Bowie’s own story. This digitally and audio remastered film is paired with an exclusive 30-minute documentary featuring insight from Spiders From Mars drummer Woody Woodmansey. Attendees will also receive an exclusive souvenir copy of MOJO magazine, including replica artwork from the original concert programme.

+ Live Accompaniment South West Silents presents: Shoes with live accompaniment from John Sweeney Dir. Lois Weber I 1916 I USA (60mins)

One of the most important film directors in the history of cinema and yet forgotten by many, prolific female director Lois Weber was a champion for women’s cinema in the pioneering years of film and her 1916 social drama Shoes is one of the era’s true masterpieces. Dime store clerk Eva Meyer (Mary MacLaren) supports her entire family with five dollars a week. With her funds drained feeding and clothing her father, mother and three brothers, Eva must look inwards to determine whether she can find the money to buy a badly-needed new pair of shoes, a decision which might lead her down a worrying path… Rarely seen, this forgotten classic has recently been beautifully restored by Eye Film Institute Netherlands and gives you a sense of the power of Weber’s talent behind the camera. A film and filmmaker not to be missed!

FIRE AT SEA (12A) FILM AND PANEL DISCUSSION Wed 22 Mar, 7.30pm

Gianfranco Rosi’s beautiful, mysterious and moving film is a documentary portrait of Lampedusa, the Sicilian island where desperate migrants from Africa and the Middle East arrive each year hoping for a new life in Europe: 400,000 in the last 20 years. Around its coast thousands are drowned, or dragged dead from their grotesquely unsafe inflatables, burned or poisoned by fumes from the diesel with which their craft have had to be refuelled from jerry cans mid-journey, in choppy seas. Lampedusa has quietly become the tragic epicentre of the migrant experience: part holding tank, part cemetery. The islanders of Lampedusa make a living from fishing. Generations have grown up and grown old with the fear of dying at sea. The endless tide of migrants has made that fear a horrible reality. Artwork by Syrian children living in refugee camps will be on display, and prints of the artwork will be available to buy. For more information visit: www.fromsyriawithlove.com

The screening will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion featuring: Baraa Ehssab Kouja, a Syrian refugee who came to the UK to study at Exeter university. He now curates and speaks at From Syria with Love events. Richard Annandale from Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol, who has been campaigning to bring unaccompanied refugee children to the UK, specifically Bristol, from Europe. Becky Condron from Refugees Welcome North Somerset, who has just returned from volunteering in a Calais Refugee Kitchen. The panel will be chaired by Paul Dunn. There will also be stalls from Refugees Welcome North Somerset, From Syria with Love, Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol, North Somerset Labour Party and North Somerset Green Party. With thanks once again to Helen Thornton.

What led Archibald Doran, Winifred Bates and Nathan Clarke to leave the West Country for Spain? Who was Potato Jones? What happened to the 4,000 Basque children who sailed into Southampton on La Habana in 1937? Resonant with contemporary parallels, the production features Flamenco dance and guitar, alongside Spanish and West Country folk songs. Winfried doesn’t see much of his daughter Ines. Paying her a surprise visit in Bucharest, the practical joker annoys Ines with corny pranks and jabs at her routine lifestyle. Father and daughter reach an impasse, and Winfried agrees to go home to Germany.

Hard-hitting and stylish, GoodFellas was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, while Joe Pesci won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of the mercurial Tommy DeVito.

Enter Toni Erdmann, Winfried’s flashy alter ego, who barges into Ines’ work circle. As Toni, Winfried doesn’t hold back, and Ines meets the challenge. DIR: BARRY JENKINS I 2016 I US

DIR: TARYN BRUMFITT I 2016 I AUSTRALIA

Sun 12 & Mon 13 Mar, 7.30pm

Wed 19 Apr, TBC

A timeless story of human connection and selfdiscovery, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

Embrace follows body image activist Taryn Brumfitt’s crusade as she explores the global issue of body loathing, inspiring us to change the way we feel about ourselves and think about our bodies.

At once a vital portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship, and love, Moonlight is a groundbreaking piece of cinema that reverberates with deep compassion and universal truths. Anchored by extraordinary performances from a tremendous ensemble cast, Jenkins’s staggering, singular vision is profoundly moving in its portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape our lives and make us who we are.

This life-changing documentary uncovers why poor body image has become a global epidemic and what women everywhere can do to have a brighter future. Funny, touching and at times gut wrenching, the heart of Embrace is Taryn’s story: how she went from a body hater to a body lover, from being devastated by her perceived ugliness to proudly posing nude for the whole world to see. **FOR US TO SCREEN THIS FILM THE DISTRIBUTOR INSISTS ON ADVANCE BOOKING BEFORE COMMITTING TO THE SCREENING. Torn between loyalty to his father and hope for his children, a man struggles to reassess his criminal life.

Michèle (Isabelle Huppert) seems indestructible. Head of a successful video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business.

Three generations of the Cutler family live as notorious outlaws in the British countryside. They spend their time hunting, raiding large estates and tormenting the police. In the midst of it all, Chad (Michael Fassbender) finds himself caught between respect for his father (Brendan Gleeson) and a desire for a better life for his children. The law is cracking down on his clan, and the decision might not be his to make. Featuring an original score by The Chemical Brothers.

Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle’s life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game - a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control. ‘Isabelle Huppert delivers a standout performance as a woman turning the tables on her attacker in the controversial director’s electrifying and provocative comeback.’ - Xan Brooks, The Guardian

DIR: DAVID LYNCH I 2001 I US

Based on the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest stars Jack Nicholson and features a supporting cast of Louise Fletcher, William Redfield, Will Sampson and Brad Dourif.

Recently hailed the best film of the 21st century, David Lynch’s quintessential neo-noir is now available in a newly-restored 4K digital transfer, supervised by Lynch himself.

Randle McMurphy is moved to a mental institution after serving a short sentence on a prison farm for statutory rape. Though not actually mentally ill, McMurphy hopes to avoid hard labour and serve the rest of his sentence in a relaxed environment, yet upon arrival he finds the ward run by the steely Nurse Ratched, who soon sees McMurphy’s presence as a threat to her authority.

Naomi Watts (Birdman, Funny Games) gives a career-making performance as aspiring actress Betty, who after arriving in Hollywood, befriends an amnesiac woman (Laura Harring) and tries to help her recover her memory. The film establishes these characters but then proceeds to subvert any certainty about them in a swirling atmosphere of increasing surrealism.

Considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, the picture was only the second to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in a Lead Role, Actress in a Lead Role, Director and Screenplay).

This beautiful, weird and entrancing film is as twisting and turning as the road it takes its name from, playing as if it arose as a series of images directly from Lynch’s subconscious.

Lucian Msamati (Luther, Game of Thrones, NT Live: The Comedy of Errors) plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, broadcast live from the National Theatre, and with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.

Joan: daughter, farm girl, visionary, patriot, kingwhisperer, soldier, leader, victor, icon, radical, witch, heretic, saint, martyr, woman.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Seized by obsessive jealousy, he begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately, with God.

From the torment of the Hundred Years’ War, the charismatic Joan of Arc carved a victory that defined France. Bernard Shaw’s classic play depicts a woman with all the instinct, zeal and transforming power of a revolutionary. Josie Rourke (Coriolanus, Les Liaisons Dangereuses) directs Gemma Arterton (Gemma Bovery, Nell Gwynn, Made in Dagenham) as Joan of Arc in this electrifying masterpiece.

About the *F Rating In 2014 less that 7% of the top 250 highest grossing films in the US were directed by women. This statistic led the Bath Film Festival to introduce the *F rating to recognise women working in film as director, writer or acting in their own right and not as a sideshow for male characters. Any film that meets one of these criteria receives the *F symbol. Cinemas, film festivals and now literature, music festivals and comedy events have adopted the *F rating.

Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to explore a new land. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love.

Just married. Bored already. Hedda longs to be free... Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. Trapped but determined, Hedda tries to control those around her, only to see her own world unravel. Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic Theatre) returns to National Theatre Live screens with a modern production of Ibsen’s masterpiece. Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Affair, Jane Eyre) plays the title role in a new version by Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal, Closer).

The nearby households of Olivia and Orsino are overrun with passion. Even Olivia’s upright housekeeper Malvolia is swept up in the madness. Where music is the food of love, and nobody is quite what they seem, anything proves possible. Simon Godwin (NT Live: Man and Superman, NT Live: The Beaux’ Stratagem) directs this joyous new production with Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner, Black Books, Episodes) as a transformed Malvolia.

RSC Live: Julius Caesar Wed 26 Apr, 7pm £10.50/8.50 Angus Jackson directs Shakespeare’s epic political tragedy, as the race to claim the empire spirals out of control. Caesar returns from war all-conquering, but mutiny is rumbling through the corridors of power. The Rome season in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre opens with the politics of spin and betrayal turning to violence. Following his sellout productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer (2014) and James Fenton’s adaptation of Don Quixote (2016), season director Angus Jackson steers the thrilling action.

GUIDED TOURS We are proud of the Curzon’s story and would like to share it with you on one of our guided tours. A tour of the building will take you behind the scenes of one of the oldest cinemas in the country. Revel in the sweep of the largest remaining example of Skelionite in the magnificent auditorium, relax in the Edwardian Tea Room, marvel at our extensive collection of 20th century film technology and glimpse the astonishing, although as yet unrestored, balcony. On the tour you will be able to contrast the equipment of the 1960’s Stanley Newton projection box with the cutting edge digital technology in the modern projection room. OUR EXPERT VOLUNTEER GUIDES: • • • •

Involve everyone – we want all our guests to have a great time! Discuss the history of the building in both a physical and social context Explain our future plans and how you can help Tailor your tour to suit your group’s ages and interests

The tours take around 1 hour. Be aware that the tour is over 3 floors, and there is no lift. However, the stairs can be tackled in short bursts, with a chance to rest at each level. If you have any special requirements then do get in touch in advance and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. Tours are arranged around our normal screenings.
