Free family fun! Have a great day out without breaking the bank With gorgeous green spaces, historic buildings, fantastic museums and galleries, city farms and a packed calendar of festivals and events, you’re never stuck for something to do in or around Bristol & Bath. Many of the area’s best events are free, so even if you’re on a tight budget there’s still plenty to enjoy. Every year homes, businesses, and artists studios in Bath and Bristol open their doors to visitors as part of their local Art Trail. Bristol has seven Trails, which take place over weekends between May and November. Bath has four, all of which happen around May. The Festival of Nature,The UK’s biggest free celebration of the natural world, takes over Bristol’s Millennium Square and Harbourside for a weekend each June. More recently the Festival has also been holding a Family Free Funday, also in June, in Bath. www.bnhc.org.uk/festival-of-nature Bristol has a reputation for world-class graffiti and street art, and the city becomes a riot of colour when Upfest, Europe’s largest urban art festival, takes place. Upfest usually happens

around the end of July and attracts more than 25,000 visitors from all over the world. www.upfest.co.uk One of the biggest free events in the country is Bristol’s annual Harbour Festival (www. bristolharbourfestival.co.uk), a weekend-long celebration of ships and the sea, held near the end of July. The city’s Harbourside welcomes around 250,000 visitors over the weekend, with food markets around Queen Square, live bands in the Amphitheatre and plenty of visiting boats and ships. Bristol Balloon Fiesta takes place in early August, four days of free, family-friendly fun that includes nightglows, firework displays, live music and mass balloon launches (weather permitting!). Held on Ashton Court Estate, it’s a must-see. www.bristolballoonfiesta.co.uk The Bristol International Kite Festival, one of Europe’s largest kite events is due to return in 2018 with giant 3-D creatures, action-packed aerial battles, breathtaking stunt routines and more. See Facebook for details. Both cities host weekend-long Open Doors events during September, a chance to look behind closed doors and discover hidden treasures. You can explore fascinating buildings, join guided tours and enjoy a range of events and activities, all free! Bath Children’s Literature Festival – Europe’s largest dedicated children’s literature festival – takes place every year in late September and early October. With authors, illustrators, celebrities and storytellers, most events are ticketed but many are at familyfriendly prices. www.bathfestivals.org.uk/childrens-literature

Eat all about it! What’s been happening on the local food scene? Everything changes, as the song goes and, for the local food scene, never has that been more true than of late. We’re used to seeing restaurants come and go - and to seeing some big names crash and burn - but over the last 12 months or so it has become almost impossible to keep up with the number of eateries that have closed, and the even larger number that have opened. Thankfully for those of us concerned with the ethics of eating we now have a wider choice than ever. Cargo, Bristol Harbourside’s burgeoning foodie hub made of converted shipping containers, has attracted a mix of big names and exciting new startups. The Better Food Company established their third store here, and as well as cafés, restaurants and artisan food shops Cargo is also providing a home for some top chefs including Larkin Cen, of BBCTV’s Masterchef, and Josh Eggleton of the Michelin-starred Pony & Trap. Over in Stokes Croft we’re about to see the launch of the Jamaica Street Stores, from a team that includes chefs Charlie James, former head chef at the River

Cottage Café, and Billy Trigg, previously head chef at The Ethicurean. Their joint mission is to serve modern, innovative food and drink that promotes local produce and sustainable farming. In Bath Framptons Café Bar and Kitchen recently opened in the historic Empire Hotel, opposite Pulteney Weir. Working closely with local artisan suppliers to find the highest quality fresh and seasonal ingredients, Framptons is open all day every day, and is a great spot for breakfast, for a quick coffee or for that special occasion. New steakhouse Bar and Block is also due to open its doors in the city this autumn. The great news for vegetarians and vegans (or those simply trying to cut down on the amount of meat that they eat) is that, after some tense negotiations, VegFest may well be returning to Bristol in 2018. It looked like the event had gone for good because of a massive increase in site rents and other fees, but Bristol City Council has reconsidered its position. Organisers VegfestUK had not made a definitive statement as this issue of The Green Guide to Bristol and Bath went to press, so keep an eye on their website for updates: www.bristol.vegfest.co.uk

CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS in BRISTOL How does a café or restaurant make it in to our listings? They have to do one or more of the following: use local, seasonal ingredients, buy from local suppliers, provide veggie, vegan and/or gluten-free options, use organic and/or free range meat, eggs and dairy and recycle and reuse as much as they possibly can. If they are licensed then they should sell products from local breweries and vineyards, and staff must not have to rely on tips to top up their earnings. Whilst we don’t claim to be infallable, we believe that each of the cafés, restaurants and takeaways we’ve included is doing theIR best to meet these standards. Food as fresh as it gets! The majority of fresh food sold in supermarkets comes from abroad. Those green beans in your basket are more likely to have been flown in from Kenya than have been grown in Keynsham. Fresh, locally grown food can be better for you and better for the planet. Isn’t it time you gave up that same old supermarket fare more often? Local food production helps to strengthen local economies by supporting small businesses, local jobs, and people around where you live.Your local farmer, fisherman, maker or baker, could not exist without you. Supporting local producers makes sound economic sense but brings a more diverse range of delicious fresh foods into your life. Try it and see for yourself how it can make you feel. Bare in mind, we may well rely a bit more on these local producers post-Brexit! Discover a whole new world of food - with all of these and many more producers on Bristol and Bath’s own online food store – fresh-range.com

The Severn Project delivers the freshest hand picked salad leaves and herbs from bases in Whitchurch and Holt, near Bath. Steve Glover and his team have blazed a trail with some of the finest restaurants in the area serving Severn Project leaves. The social enterprise is not only committed to producing outstanding food, it also gives people the chance to adopt a new more positive role - growing food. www.thesevernproject.org

Greg Pilley brews a range of organic and vegan beers from his micro-brewery just outside Stroud. Many of the ingredients used in Greg’s ales come from local organic farms, including Cotswold-grown barley. Stuart Perkins takes a passionate, sustainable and traditional approach to rearing poultry at Castlemead in Radstock. The birds eat locally milled cereals, home grown barley and whatever they can forage whilst roaming the Somerset hills: no additives, growth hormones or anything that alters growth - or taste. With many of the top restaurants in the area serving Stuart’s poultry, it’s no surprise that Castlemead is a multi-award winner. www.castlemeadpoultry.co.uk

Save heat and save money! Our top tips for saving energy around the home The cost of heating your home rises every year, and the first step towards reducing your heating bills - and potentially savaing a significant amount of money - is understanding how much energy you use to heat your home. Unfortunately, there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ formula to determine your annual bill: it takes around 13,000 kWh a year to heat the average UK home, but very few homes are actually that average! A small flat with two people living in it will probably spend around £800 a year; a larger house with five people will easily spend double that.

1: Fit radiator enhancers, inexpensive heat-reflective panels that stop heat going into walls and instead reflect it into the room. They could give you an estimated 7% saving.

Working out your annual useage takes time and may involve a fair bit of headscratching. Thankfully most energy suppliers have online calculators that may be able to help you get at least a rough idea - although you could just as simply look at what you’ve had to pay out to the utilities companies over the last 12 months.

4: Top up your loft insulation. If your home is currently without loft insulation, you could see a saving of £180 per year on your energy bills by installing 270mm deep mineral wool insulation. At a cost of less than £300 the insulation will pay for itself within two years.

But the cost of heating your home also depends on the efficiency of a property. No matter how switched on you are when it comes to energy, if your home lacks good insulation, double glazing, draught proofing, etc, then there’s a more than fair chance that you could be paying for more energy than is necessary. Luckily there are a few simple things that we can all do which are guaranteed to significantly reduce the cost of your annual fuel bill.

2: Fit thermal lining to your curtains. These will reduce the heat lost through your windows by as much as half. 3: Draught-proof your doors and windows. 30% of household heat is lost this way. Make sure you don’t seal up vital ventialtion though!

5: Fit double or secondary glazing. The best way possible to cut down on waste: secondary glazing can save up to 70% of the heat lost through windows. 6: Change your boiler. Not a cheap option, but replacing an old, inefficient gas boiler could save you £300 a year on your energy bill.

A trip along Gloucester Road discover the independent spirit of Bristol’s most unique shopping destination Bristol’s bustling Gloucester Road, known as the longest street of independent shops in Europe, is a wonderfully vibrant high street. Cafés, restaurants, and music venues sit alongside shops offering everything from fruit and veg to vintage clothing, with a smattering of gastro pubs and charity shops in between. It’s a place to spend the whole day or evening. Although most people are aware of the lower part of the Gloucester Road the central part, at the top of Pigsty Hill, is gaining a reputation as a go-to destination. Known as Glos Rd Central, gift shops and galleries nestle between butchers, bakers and bike shops, along with some well known Bristol restaurants and cafés. Each of the galleries has their own style and feature different collections of Bristol artists; with so much creativity in the city there’s enough to go round! Room 212 stands at the hub. Brimming with artwork, jewellery and gifts

by local artists, this treasure trove of a gallery has monthly themes to reflect the seasons or Bristol’s festivals. Room 212 is the driving force behind events at Glos Rd Central and the 212 Eco House, round the back, is a venue for Bristol Doors Open Day and the North Bristol Art Trail. As part of the My Wild City campaign, the Avon Wildlife Trust helped businesses install planters out on the wide pavements that spill over with greenery and flowers all year round.Traders make great use of the outside space, hosting free community events such as Glos Rd Central Mayfest, with art and craft activities, plant stalls, locally made food, live music and the arrival of the traditional Jack in the Green and his band of dancers.Their Christmas Street Party on the 1st Thurs of December is a twinkly, festive affair with food and Christmas carols and a perfect opportunity for a spot of late night shopping. Gloucester Road is at the centre of the North Bristol Art Trail, which takes place during the last weekend of November. The art trail is a great time to visit artists in their homes and studios, discuss their work and perhaps buy a piece to take home. Shops such as Room 212, Artemis and Fig play host to artists during the NBA weekend and continue to show the artists’ work all year round. Window Wanderland orginated in the upper Gloucester Road area, with the aim to transform everyday streets into magical, outdoor galleries, and its success has inspired other communities to create their own versions. The area becomes alive over a gloomy February weekend as

everyone wanders the streets looking at the creative window displays of shops and homes in the area. Luckily the brand new Bishopston Library has opened up on Gloucester Road, offering a space to be creative for projects such as these. The latest creative venture is the Gloucester Road Art Banner project, sponsored by Gloucester Road traders and North Bristol Artists. Artists were asked to create artwork to inspire and entice people to the high street; their vibrant banners, attached to lampposts up Gloucester Road, are a celebration of shopping locally and hopefully encourage everyone to leave their cars behind to wander up the high street. You really can get everything you need on Gloucester Road - and have a great time while you’re doing it!

Shopping with style Bath is a shopaholic’s dream Although it may be the Roman and Georgian past that attracts the many tourists who flock to Bath daily, the city is one of the UK’s top locations for a spot of retail therapy, with a mix of well-known high street brands, highend boutique stores and independent shops. Bath can boast quirky gift shops, imaginative homeware stores, delicious delis, fabulous galleries, jewellers, antiques emporiums, arts and craft shops and independent bookshops – and it’s also home to Jolly’s, the oldest department store in the country (now part of the House of Fraser) which opened all the way back in 1823. As much of the city centre is pedestrianised, shopping in Bath can be a dream and, with most shops in easy walking distance of each other, the city’s retailers are easily explored on foot. Walcot Street, Bath’s bohemian arts quarter, offers vintage and retro clothing, interiors shops, great food and is home to the city’s famous co-operatively owned pub, The Bell. At the other end of the city SouthGate hosts more than 40 big name shops and around 20 familyfriendly cafés and restaurants.

Oldfield Park has it’s own distinct character, and is well worth the two minute train journey, with grocers, butchers, cafés and a great independent book shop. 20 years ago Bath held the UK’s first regular Farmer’s Market, and it still takes place each Saturday in Green Park Station. The Station is also home to a number of different small businesses and regular markets, with fresh local food, secondhand goods and all sorts of ephemera available throughout the week. The historic Guildhall Market - the oldest shopping venue in the city – has traditional stalls selling just about everything you could need, from cheese and meat to bags and books. And don’t forget Bath’s Christmas Market, which each year transforms the area around the Abbey into a magical winter wonderland with over 150 retailers in their distinctive, Swiss-style chalets offering handmade gifts and local produce. If all this shopping has worn you out, why not try and mix sightseeing with a spot of relaxation, with a dip in Thermae Bath Spa’s iconic rooftop pool, or maybe dinner and a cocktail on the roof terrace of Hall and Woodhouse?

revised, expanded and updated, and packed with places to eat & drink, local food shops, family days out, ethical shopping and much, much more!

For the third year running the cover of the Green Guide to Bristol and Bath features one of Jenny Urquhart’s distinctive images of Bristol.

Jenny’s wonderful paintings often reflect her love of the South West coastline and the British countryside. She adores her hometown of Bristol and her instantly recognisable cityscapes, featuring hot air balloons and the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, are a familiar sight locally. In 2015 Jenny painted two Shaun the Sheep statues, Lambmark Larry and Baa-loon, as part of the Shaun in the City campaign to raise money for charity. You can still buy copies of her print ‘Sheep in London Town’, which she produced for the Shaun in the City Trail, and every penny helps The Grand Appeal to support sick children in Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Jenny has a growing range of limited edition prints, cards, soft furnishings and also undertakes commissions. There’s even a Bristol colouring book with more than 20 of her best-loved images – fun for all ages! You can buy Jenny’s work in galleries and shops around Bristol or direct from her own website - www.jennysgallery.co.uk

Fill up for free! Stay hydrated and save the planet with Refill Bristol Bottled water is expensive, wasteful and, with the amount of plastic ending up in landfill or in our oceans, it is also runious for the planet. Refill Bristol is a practical campaign to make Bristol a refillable city, offering more than 200 refill stations where you can fill up your reusable water bottle for free. The aim is to reduce the amount of plastic bottles and bottle tops ending up in our oceans, whilst keeping you healthy, hydrated and saving you money at the same time. It’s a beautifully simple idea: participating cafés, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and other businesses display a sticker in their window like the one here, inviting thirsty passers-by to come on in and fill up their bottle. The brainchild of City to Sea, a Bristolbased Community Interest Company dedicated to reducing the quantity of plastic that ends up in our oceans, Refill Bristol is one of the legacy campaigns that grew out of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital in 2015. There are now over 200 Refill stations across the city and the aim is simple: to get Bristolians and visitors to Bristol on board with a change in the way we use singleuse plastics – in this instance, bottled water. bottles. To find a complete list of the more than 200 venues where you can refill your water bottle for free, check out www.refillbristol.org.uk and join the more than 10,000 people who have

already signed up to the Refill pledge. Working in partnership with Bristol Water, Refill stations have also popped up at festivals including Bristol Pride, the Festival of Nature and the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. The scheme has proved to be a huge success, and this year will see the launch of Refill Bath, with Refill Bradford-on-Avon not far behind. Refill has spread to other cities in the UK and Europe too - this brilliantly simple idea has sister schemes in Hamburg, Bonn and other German cities. Refill Bath is spearheaded by a local group of volunteers, with support from Bath and North East Somerset Council, and could not be more apt for a city that has been celebrated for centuries for the healing properties of its’ water.

Let the children play

Time out with the kids without breaking the bank At a loose end during the school holidays? There are plenty of places that you and the kids can go to enjoy some hands-on creative play. Children’s Scrapstore in St Werburghs, Bristol (www.childrensscrapstore.co.uk) is a charity that provides a centre for creative and sustainable play. They believe that play is the most important component of a child’s development and promote this by using recycled scrap from local businesses. Their warehouse stocks just about everything that you could need for creative play: paper and card, foam, plastic pots, tubes, tubs, netting, fabric, books, CDs and all manner of offcuts and leftovers. You never know what strange things you’ll find! Bath City Farm is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and entry is free. The farm has a café, farm shop, performance space and The Fort, a play space for toddlers that includes a sandpit area, fort, climbing wall, slide and interactive water cascade. (www. bathcityfarm.org.uk) Bristol has a number of city farms, including St Werburgh’s (close to the Scrapstore), Windmill Hill in Bedminster, Hartcliffe Community Farm and the Lawrence Weston Community Farm: all are free to visit and offer your kids a great chance to learn about food and growing. Oh, and each of them also has some fantastically friendly and furry farm animals too!

Many of the public parks in Bath and Bristol have free children’s play areas, with everything from special toddler zones to climbing walls and skate parks. Worth mentioning are the larger play areas in Bath’s Victoria Park (with picnic tables and crazy golf), Bristol’s St George’s Park (great skate park and free parking) and Canford Park in Westbury-on-Trym, which has football pitches, tennis courts and a bowling green. If your children enjoy exploring the outdoors then why not take them for a trip around Ashton Court Estate or Blaise Estate in Bristol, or the gorgeous Sydney Gardens in Bath for a spot of wildlife spotting? There are many wonderful and unspolit nature reserves around the area too, twelve in Bristol alone, or if you want to get out of the city for the day then what about Folly Farm, the Avon Wildlife Trust’s 250-acre nature reserve located in the beautiful Chew Valley, with views of the Mendip Hills and Chew Valley Lake? If you’re still in need of inspiration then the Days Out With The Kids website (www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk) is a fantastic resource, listing over 6,000 attractions across the UK, many of them free.

Ethical supply chains. What are they? How the Community Farm is working towards positive change It’s fashionable for retailers, restaurants, and cafés to talk-up their local supply chains these days. Many promote seasonal eating, and espouse the importance of supporting their local economies. The Community Farm, in Chew Magna, just south of Bristol, see themselves as pioneers of ethical fruit and vegetable supply - so this messaging is music to their ears. However, beyond the slick slogans, the reality is we’re living in a society that still doesn’t really understand the complexities of how local supply chains work, or how vulnerable our farmers are in our broken food system. That’s why businesses have a responsibility not just to pay lip service to the importance of a healthy, local food chain, but to ensure this ethos is genuinely represented throughout their organisation. Supermarkets have had a markedly negative effect on our wholesalers.Their sheer dominance and tactics of using vegetables as loss leaders has devalued good produce, and forced many farms out of business. Wholesalers are left with little option but to squeeze farmers or use cheaper, imported produce just to compete. This impacts dramatically on the flow of vegetables & their provenance into a local area, and it will be interesting to see the effect Brexit has on this.

The team at The Community Farm work hard at getting their ethical supply chain right, liaising with local, organic producers who share the same agro-ecological farming principles of looking after the environment while trying to secure the future of farming. They strive to pay above the market price to farmers for their produce and make it accessible directly to customers at a cost that’s affordable. They don’t go all-out for maximum profit, aiming instead for fairness for those on both sides of the supply chain. The Farm’s wholesale partners understand this, and working with organisations such as Better Food,Yeo Valley and The Ethicurean is key to the success of this relationship. Importantly, these partners all take the opportunity to get their employees on the land, to plant, pick and harvest with the rest of the team and connect with their ethos. These shared values transfer through their staff and businesses, which in turn, has a positive effect on their customers. They know they are getting quality produce, at the correct price, and that their money is going towards helping people, improving the environment and is providing a future for local producers. That’s a truly ethical supply chain! www.thecommunityfarm.co.uk
