KZN’S FAVOURITE READ
letter to the editor
You claim in Lifeandstyle paper to have reached over a million listeners over the festive season. The largest community radio station in the country Jozi FM has a listenership of something like 500 000 and Radio Kwezi in KZN has a fifth of that after years of operation. These are RAMS measures. The Dolphin Coast had at most 100 000 visitors from the peak of December 15 to January 5. Your claim of a million listeners in the first month of operation is laughable. Or are you counting by the number of shoppers in Spar per hour at 12 x 20 days? Your claim is as false as your BBC accent, Boksburg boytjie. You can fool all of the people some of the time . . . Yours in radio Manga Thobane
Hi Manga Thanks for the e mail. I had a good chuckle at some of the content
– particularly the BBC accent…that’s just so cool! Anyway, I need to clarify a few points that seem to have ruffled your feathers. Firstly the over a million listeners claim. You are probably not aware that we are streamed live through the biggest shopping centre in Ballito. Their visitor footfall count exceeds the one million mark over the December festive season so technically the claim is understated when you take into consideration the listenership in rest of our footprint on air and online. I would hasten to point out that all statistics are based on estimates and, as a former broadcast media professional from the real world, I could debate this with you for ages – but that would just be a silly waste of time. RAMS, AMPS, ABC’s, VFD’s are all subject to interpretation and you can believe whatever you choose. Obviously you are going

as a radio man with some experience but you’ll have to forgive my ignorance as I have never heard of you. As for me and my team, we are available to debate the efficacy of our radio station and publications with anyone who cares to engage with us on a serious level as we are serious about our media proposition and have built a respected media brand on solid results-based content which advertisers have benefited from for over a decade. I welcome constructive engagement and thank you for your input – although I fail to understand where you are coming from and what your real argument is. Still, if it makes you happy, this old boytjie from Boksburg with the BBC accent is delighted to have been of service.

Our on-air team continues to grow with new voices joining the establishment to learn the ropes and the more experienced presenters settling in to what is becoming a comfortably familiar routine. It is interesting to see how quickly the word is spreading and when celebrities come to Ballito, it is becoming almost mandatory to pop in to our studio at the Lifestyle Centre. The popular charismatic preacher, Angus Buchan, came to Ballito last week to lead the faithful in a prayer for rain after which he visited the studio to spread the word a little wider. It was good to see how many listeners responded to this via our social media network and website at www.lifeandstyle.fm and we are confident that the drought
this extraordinary achievement. I loved my grandfather and I find it rather comforting that the microphone used by him and so many of the radio legends from those halcyon days to create so much of what is now South African radio history, watches over us in Ballito as we continue to keep the music alive. If you haven’t joined us on Radio Life & Style yet, or if you are out of range of our frequency on 88.0FM, you can listen to us live on your smartphone, tablet or computer via the popular TuneIn app or the live streaming button on our website www.lifeandstyle.fm

will be broken soon. If you missed the live interview, you’ll find it as a podcast on our website along with other highlights from the past few weeks. But you can’t please everyone as is obvious from the letter to the editor printed below. While the writer is obviously a little misguided, he did strike a chord with his reference to the BBC. Prominently displayed on a shelf in our radio studio is an original BBC Lozenge ribbon mic that was in service for many years in the main studio of the SABC in Commissioner St in Johannesburg. When the SABC went live with its inaugural radio broadcast in 1924, my late grandfather, Billy Matthews, was the first voice to be heard on the airwaves in this country. He continued broadcasting on the English Service for the next fifty years and when he retired from broadcasting in 1974, his colleagues presented him with that very same microphone, mounted on a wooden base on which they secured a plaque commemorating

Looking Backwards at History to see the Future? New wave of optimism in the property market.

ow true for all the residents of Ballito. We are all aware that the water we always took for granted is slowly running dry……
But Looking ahead: We are optimistic that good rains will come again, the dams will be replenished and the water will be plentiful again. Looking Back: According to Lightstone Property Info: the property market in the Ballito area only ( excluding all other areas such as Salt Rock etc. ) has seen a steady increase in value in 2014 year on year, although the number of units sold came down. recovery since the market collapsed in 2008. BUT – (there is always a BUT) – the impact of Eskom’s power supply, the rapid fall of the Rand in recent months and political uncertainty in other parts of the world, the lower than expected economic growth and labour unrest, it is more than likely that all of this optimism could dissipate like the water drying up in the Hazelmere dam. Selling your Property: The property market rejects ‘overpriced” properties from the outset. Most buyers out there can detect such a property almost immediately and will not even want to inspect them. As a seller one must expect that nowadays all buyers are well informed and not prepared to pay the higher price for

Looking Forward: The Business Report of 14 January 2015 announced that the future outlook (“High Hopes for Property, Finance and Retail”) for the property market is like a wave of positive energy spreading across the country and especially on the Dolphin Coast. Talking to local estate agents, most of them are very positive and optimistic for growth in the market in 2015. With the petrol prices going down, the airport nearby and the Dolphin Coast recognised as one of the “hot-spots” for growth in the country, I believe that we will see more growth and ongoing
your needs and wants. They will only offer what they believe the property is worth. My advice to you is to call in an experienced, qualified and certified realtor who knows the current market well enough to re-value your house to get the price as close as possible to market value. That way you can sell and move on without waiting for the market to catch up with your expectations. Most agents will concur that haggling with a seller to accept a market-related offer for his over-priced house is not a win situation. The market is active with lots of purchasers out there, if you are a serious seller, now is the time to price it right, prepare your property to attract the best price and make it easy for viewers to access your house. That way you will be sure to benefit from the newfound spurt of activity. Looking at the stats above, you will notice that the number of sales went down last year. Although the market was more active, you may lose

LEARNING AND LIVING THE ASHTON WAy Some highlights of the 2015 start to the Ashton Academic Year Joe Erasmus –
Executive Head, Ashton International College
O
ne can hardly believe that this year Ashton celebrates its fifth birthday. The promise by André Buys to build a school for the future, and make a difference to education on the Dolphin Coast, has certainly been fulfilled. This year Ashton opened International College welcomed 1112 students to the campus – a phenomenal growth from the 459 students in 2010.
It is with much joy that we officially opened the Grace Wing – a unique concept in South Africa catering for students with autism. It started with one small class of eight children started on Wednesday in the new branch of the Ashlings Early Learning Centre. These students have four staff members, with fully qualified Occupational and Speech Therapists who are on campus full time. “There is an urgent need in this area for students on the autism spectrum and we believe that every child deserves to reach their highest potential. With the continuous growth at Ashton, fifteen new classrooms are under

On the Academic front, Ashton recorded three 100% pass rates in the short space of three weeks. Evangelist Angus Buchan Leads a Prayer for Rain
P
opular Famer/Evangelist, Angus Buchan came to the North Coast last week to lead people in prayer asking for relief from the protracted drought in the region. With dam levels dangerously low and the agricultural sector in distress, the only relief in the short term will come from above which is exactly what Angus came to invoke. His message was simple – every drought is broken by rain and with prayer, the rains will come.
Over a thousand people gathered at Ashton College in Ballito to join him as he prayed for the rain that will bring relief to the region and with good rainfall forecast over the next few days, we remain hopeful. From the Ashton Campus, Angus paid a visit to the Radio Life & Style studio where he extended the prayer via the airwaves and online to listeners throughout the region. We were blessed by his visit – we hope that you were to!
“The Cambridge International Examinations are marked in the UK, and were written by the students in October and November 2014,” said Mr Erasmus, Executive Head. The Cambridge IGCSE Certificate is an internationally recognised qualification equivalent to the UK GCSE which is equivalent to a UK matric. “The results also show the depth of Excellence achieved by the candidates as 87% of students achieved aggregates of 70% and above,” he added. “An outstanding achievement by our students and it was most encouraging that every single subject that was written, was rewarded with a least one A+ symbol (90% and above),” said Mrs Jenny van Buuren, who was also the examining officer. The Cambridge IGCSE examination is the most popular international qualification for 14 – 16 year olds, offered at just over 160 schools across the globe. Students who wrote the AS level examinations, were rewarded with a 100% pass, with the top student being Tenille Webster who achieved 2 distinctions in her nominated 3 subjects. “These students completed their O levels (IGCSE) in 2013, and they will now continue on the CIE Examination system towards their final goal of achieving their A Level qualifications.

It's The Bat-Piano!
Hungarian musician reveals futuristic re-design of piano that looks more suited for super hero's Gotham Cave than the Royal Albert Hall
I
t is one of the most recognisable and popular of all instruments, and yet its design has remained almost unchanged for 100 years.

But now Hungarian musician Gergely Boganyi claims to have reinvented the grand piano after spending 8,000 hours and almost ÂŁ1million building his own in a workshop in Budapest. With its edgy design, finished entirely in glossy black paint, music fans have dubbed the creation the Batpiano - for its resemblance to the Batmobile. It is certainly futuristic, doing away with most of the wood traditionally used in grand pianos such as the Steinway, and replacing it with cutting-edge carbon fibre. Almost every single one of the instrument's 18,000 components has been redesigned. Rather than the traditional three legs, the Boganyi has only two, and both of them have been carefully shaped to help project the sound into the auditorium. He had also reinvented the key mechanism, meaning it applies only the slightest pressure to the soundboard - the anchor of the piano to which everything else is fixed. The board itself, instead of being made from the traditional wood, is made from more than 20 carbon composite layers woven one on top of the other. Boganyi, 41, a feted concert pianist who has spent more than a decade building the instrument in a workshop above a disused communist-era factory, is optimistic about the results. He said: 'What we created will enrich piano history. It is said that old pianos sound friendly, velvety, while new ones are stronger and more powerful. I was hoping for both.' The piano traces its history back to the
dulcimer, an instrument made of strings stretched across a board played with hand-held hammers, which was invented in Iran shortly after the birth of Christ. However, the first modern piano was created by Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori in Florence, Italy, in 1709 and was called gravicembalo col piano e forte - which roughly translates as 'harpsichord with soft and loud'. It was designed to improve upon the harpsichord, the favoured instrument of Bach and Handel, which produced notes by plucking at strings, rather than striking them. The plucking action meant that the harpsichord was only capable of producing one flat tone, while the piano's hammer action meant the tone varied depending on how hard the key was struck. During the late 18th century, around the time Beethoven was playing, craftsmen added more keys to the instrument, as well as the first pedals to dampen or sustain notes. The suit the new styles of playing, the hammers were made heavier, and the strings stronger, producing a powerful new sound. Makers also experimented with upright versions, with the strings stretched vertically in front of the player, and square grand pianos. The last great period of invention came in the mid to late 1800s, when Steinway & Sons developed their grand piano, and added a third pedal underneath. But now Boganyi, who won his first music prize aged six and performs as a soloist in acclaimed orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, is hoping to add to that history with his latest version. He says the new instrument is based on innovations dreamed up, but not widely used, by 19th-century Hungarian piano makers. And it seems that it could have been worth the wait as expert piano players agreed that the sound it produces is entirely new. Karoly Reisinger, CEO of New York piano repair shop Klavierhaus, was 'mesmerized at the sound he said brought lyrical qualities back to the piano after a century of power-focused development. He said: 'In this design you will be able to hear the 1850-1860 era qualities, lyrical, bell-like, precise – and also the modern instrument that our time is used to, which is clarity.' Four-time Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Gerald Clayton said he felt he had played a slick new type of
instrument. He added: 'The sound almost feels as if you're in a bubble, it's so clear. It feels like you are in a spaceship, like you are hovering above gravity. 'When you play a lot of notes, or you play a chord, the sensation is different. It's super-clear.' Following a premiere in the Grand Concert Hall in Budapest earlier this month, the piano will go on sale later this year. Boganyi does not know how much each one will cost yet, but he says 'with these materials it will not be cheap.'

Coming Together to Build Brand Ballito There is plenty that is wrong with the world. You don’t have to be a genius to find disturbing issues to discuss around the dinner table. People have been doing it for years. But there is an interesting new trend emerging from those who understand that you actually can make a difference by finding solutions to the problems that beset us and that by pursuing this, we become happier. Take for example a recent lead story in the North Coast Courier, a Ballito based community newspaper that focused attention on a graphic tale of human faeces and filthy toilets on the beachfront over the festive season. Not a pleasant subject, but it probably got your attention if you cared to read it. The impression created was that as a result of this travesty, Ballito as a holiday destination was in decline and that holidaymakers would probably look elsewhere for their seasonal vacation going forward. There was, however, another side to service delivery in Ballito over the
festive season which put the matter in perspective. So we invited representatives from the KwaDukuza municipality, the ward councillor responsible for the affected beachfront, the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association and the North Coast Courier to the Radio Life & Style studio for a live interview to discuss the story and service delivery issues in general in the greater Ballito area. While the North Coast Courier declined the invitation, Sifiso Zulu from the KwaDukuza Municipality, Councillor Colin Marsh from Ward 6 in Ballito and DOCRRA representative, Barbara Shingler, came together last Friday to address the matter in a studio discussion hosted by Radio Life & Style’s Dave Charles. It was a lively interview with an excellent outcome and, if you missed it, you can listen to it now as a podcast on our website at www.lifeandstyle.fm

Loryn Cornick Studio Manager
happening at the studio these past few weeks... our website www.lifeandstyle.fm
After the prayer for rain at Ashton International College this morning, we were fortunate enough to have Angus Buchan join us in studio to deliver an on-air prayer for the well being of the North Coast in this time of drought.
We had the pleasure of talking to the lovely Kim Martin during this morning’s edition of THE POWER HOUR. Kim gave us the low down on all things dietetics and how we can make a change towards a healthier lifestyle. Catch her article in this issue of Life & Style!
Our Studio Manager is no stranger to the world of commercial radio. Loryn Cornick has recently relocated to the North Coast from the Big Smoke where she spent many years managing the music for 5FM. There she was responsible for, among other things, selecting new tracks to update the playlist at a time when 5FM still featured music that you could listen to (okay, so that last bit was added by Dave Charles, former Radio 5 Deejay now editor of Life & Style…) Loryn is now running the studio, scheduling commercials, interviews, live reads and new music. She is the friendly face behind the reception desk in the studio and the gatekeeper to the airwaves…so be nice!
Mike Charles Station Manager UCT honours graduate in Media and former Crawford North Coast alumnus, Mike Charles is the Station Manager at Radio Life & Style. He is young and energetic and no stranger to the airwaves having worked as a media professional in Cape Town before returning to the North Coast to assist in the establishment of Radio Life & Style. Mike has been responsible for the selection and training of talent on the station as well as for the creation of our production studio where the commercials, idents, stings and bumpers for the station are recorded. He also presents our breakfast show with the rest of the breakfast team Mondays to Fridays from 7 – 9 and keeps a tight rein on the station to ensure a thoroughly professional approach from all concerned.
International saxophonist, Andrew Young paid us a visit too.
Danielle Fisher - midday mix Danielle is a professional entertainer who has embraced the challenge to become a radio presenter on Radio Life & Style and has joined the team. Danielle has been part of the midday mix team with former 5FM Deejay, Dave Charles and fellow trainee, Patricia Malemia. Her technical skills are being developed through our training programme and soon she will be hosting her own show. Danielle has grown up in a showbiz family and has an extensive musical knowledge which, together with her effervescent humour and personality make for a dynamic radio personality. Watch this space!

How to Start at the Beginning Kim Martin
A
t the back end of our favourite time of year – the festive season – it is easy to feel that the only way to get our health (and waistlines) back into shape is to slave away at the gym or even worse, just not eat…ever. The New Year has arrived, and there is little room left for excuses of “when December ends…on Monday I will start…I just need (insert obscure relative here) to leave before I can start eating healthy again”. The time is now!
One of the most toxic things I have encountered when it comes to clients managing their diet and “staying on track” is guilt. When we feel guilty about what we just ate, we can do one of three things: 1.Cry about it 2.Decide that the day is lost so we might as well continue with our indulgent ways 3.Pick ourselves up out of that icecream tub and just move on. Personally, I promote that we stick to option number 3. If “just move on” seems to oversimplify a complicated endeavor, I suggest giving the following tips a quick read through:
• Adjust your expectations
There may come a time in your life when the universe conspires to help you on your health and fitness journey…you happen to be wearing your favourite workout shirt…plus those comfortable takkies…your “getpumped” song comes on your iPod… you’ve had those magical 8 hours of sleep and are a bundle of energy…the gym happens to be basically empty and you have free reign of any machine you desire…and you workout like you have your own cheer squad rooting for you! However, it is more likely that maybe one…or none…of the above may arise. Do not expect magic moments, make them! We tend to imagine that it will be easier to start at any other time than the present (like tomorrow, the next day or never), and what a brilliant deceit! It is vitally important to recognize that there really is no perfect time. There never will be the “right” time to start a new health plan, but bite the bullet and just do it anyway.
• Make time
Whether you have 5 minutes or 50 minutes, there is always something you can do to work towards your health goals. In 5 minutes you can plan healthy meals for the next few days or write a shopping list. In 50 minutes you can go for a run, brisk walk or hit the gym. The timing may never seem
perfect, and when it comes to time nobody can give you more. You need to just make it! The smallest possible step (be it the shopping list) is still a step in the right direction. Without even realizing it, you’ve started! Starting means finally taking action. It means committing to a choice. This is how you know it is a true start.
• Do something, absolutely anything
Taking action is like a “vote” in favour of a healthier life. Vote early and as often as needed to keep yourself fit, strong and healthy. In the beginning, your vote may simply mean taking the stairs and not the escalator but with practice your vote can be committing to that half marathon you’ve always wanted to complete. Set yourself some realistic goals, and be specific about them. Start small, but dream big! Your first goal could be to hit the gym three times in the next week. It will feel fantastic once you start ticking those initial goals off and making some new ones!
• Expect resistance Resistance to change is completely normal. Just push through it! If you’re resistant it doesn’t mean that this new endeavor wont work, it just means that you have started. Remind yourself that you are making new habits and a change for the better. Your old habits never got you to where you want to be, so be careful not to fall back into them. It may help to do a bit of forward thinking to anticipate where you may have potential pitfalls. For example if you know you have a friend’s party coming up, plan to be that person who brings the healthy snacks. If you’ve already anticipated that there will be salty, chip-faced challenges ahead, your exit strategy will be in place!
• Get support
Accountability works wonders when it comes to commitment! Find a friend or family member, a
gym buddy, a dietician or coach, and get them to motivate you when your own dedication wavers. We all need someone to call us out on our procrastination at times. Putting the first foot in front of the second foot might require some help in the beginning. Which is OK! Find the right person to help you until you can help yourself. If you happen to follow even just one of the above tips then, without even knowing it, you have started! Let 2015 be the year where you get what you want for your health. For more information on any of these products and expert advice, please visit Lifestyle Health, Shop 24A, Lifestyle Shopping Centre, Ballito 032 946 0441.
• Start that “when the time is right...” diet
Take ten minutes, go into your fridge and really look at what is in there. If it is rather empty – great! Make a list of healthy foods to fill it with. If it is rather full, make sure the majority of the contents are going to help you on your health journey. Either way, commit yourself to having a new fridge where there are lots of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, and foods that are as natural as possible!
NOW AVAILABLE AT LIFESTYLE HEALTH
• Consider supplements
We could all use a little help with getting our liver, kidneys and colon back on track after a festive holiday. The diet will work absolute wonders in this regard, but a few supplements may give you the extra edge. Take a look at Milk Thistle and Dandelion complex to target your liver and kidneys. With regards to the colon, think fibre and probiotics! Fibre again you will get from those fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds but you can add some Psyllium Husk (with drinking more water) if your digestion is stilted. With regards to probiotics, do not accept a sub-par product because there are many out there that will basically do nothing for you. Your gut has about 30 to 40 different strains of bacteria in it, so for daily maintenance choose a probiotic with multiple strains – the more the merrier! If you have a specific problem such as IBS or Diarrhoea then make sure the probiotic you purchase contains the bacterial strain that you specifically need!

Put Your Fitness To The Test. Johan Dorfling - Personal Trainer
S
o how fit are you? Can you put a number to it? Are you measuring your fitness by the number of times you go to gym per week or the amount of work that you actually do when you are there? Quality vs quantity people!
There is huge debate around who the fittest athletes in the world really are. Who is fitter? A springbok rugby player, a Tour de France rider, an ironman athlete or a power lifter? How do you even compare these athletes to each other, how would you measure and what would you measure? Unfortunately you can't compare them against each other because there are so many different elements to fitness. But you can test different fitness elements to identify a baseline for each. Fitness testing can help you identify strengths and weaknesses to help you prescribe and modify training plans to improve performance and achieve specific goals. Any worthwhile fitness program should start with fitness testing. Sounds too complicated? It's actually not. Even Jumping on a scale is considered part of a fitness test, in fact, a lot of tests require your weight as a base input to the test, for example, a BMI test. Fitness testing is super important to know exactly where you are in you program, if you are improving and what you should be aiming for. It helps you set achievable goals and keeps you on track. There are lots of different fitness tests. Do fitness testing that are specific to your sport and goals. For example, if you are a cyclist, there is not much point in seeing how much you can bench press, but it is worthwhile to know how many watts you can generate per kilogram of bodyweight. Before doing a fitness test, complete a PAR Q, if you have any
risk factors, check in with your doctor. Some tests are pretty hectic and can put untrained individuals at risk. When you have the "all clear", here are a few fitness tests that you can do at home. Weight Uhm, jump on a scale. You can do this one weekly! Height Believe it or not, but this one can change! If you are losing height, it can indicate sign of deteriorating posture. BMI For the mathemagicians, weight divided by height square. This is not the same as body fat percentage taken with skinfold callipers, but it will tell you more or less what you should be weighing. Girth Measurements Take a tape measure, measure your arms, legs, waist, hips etc. Make sure you measure at the same site every time for accuracy. You can do this every 4 to 6 weeks. Push up test Do push ups at a tempo of 1 second up, 1 second down. When you can't keep the tempo anymore, the test is done and that's your score. 3 min step test One of the best and basic cardiovascular fitness tests out. This one checks how well your heart and lungs work to supply you with ongoing energy. Step up and down a 30 cm step for 3 minutes at a tempo of 24 steps per minute, count how many times your heart beat in the minute following the test. That's your score. Crunch Test A bit safer than a sit-up test, this one tests how well those six pack muscles work. Works the same as the push up test. Single leg balance test How long can you balance on one leg without falling over and dancing around? 1 minute Burpie challenge. Check how many Burpies you can
do in a minute. This one checks how hard core you are. For me personally, the hardest but most rewarding test is the 20 min lactate threshold test on the wattbike. Requirements: 1x wattbike, 1 cement pill and a bucket. Also a good idea to post a selfie immediately after your test. It's a good idea to test yourself regularly to track your performance. You can even incorporate some of the tests into your workout. Happy testing!
memory. Work on your powers of concentration – challenge yourself to learn something new and interesting. Don’t allow responsibility to weigh you down. Yes, kids must be fetched from school but the world would actually go on without you. Let your kids watch TV for an hour while you come to yoga then switch off when you get back and make them talk to you – they might discover you’re quite nice. Arrange things to do that bring you pleasure – life is not just a grind. Appreciate water, sound, silence, movement, freedom and imagination. Don’t tell fibs – large or small – it becomes a habit. I wish you a glorious year of good health and happiness but really it’s entirely up to you. Namaste 072 885 6376

Honda Unveiled Long Awaited New NSX Supercar at Detroit Motor Show
H
onda is a popular marque among vehicle lovers on the North Coast and their latest offering is positively thrilling.
Unveiled this week at the Detroit Motor Show, the long awaited new Honda NSX supercar will blow away a few cobwebs. And it's a petrol electric sport hybrid that is green as well as bright red. With its aerodynamic, low slung features, the NSX looks more McLaren than Honda but certainly does have all that Jazz. A combination of the 550bhp
twin-turbo V6 engine at the rear and two of its three electric motors fixed on the axle towards the front gives independent drive to each wheel, via a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The third electric motor, between the engine and the gearbox, aids smooth acceleration, braking and gear changes. In Britain and mainland Europe it will be sold as a Honda. But in the U.S. it will carry the badge of Acura, Honda's upmarket luxury arm, which is to the Japanese company what Lexus is to Toyota, and Infiniti to Nissan. It features a space-frame construction using ultra high strength steel and aluminium, with a carbonfibre floor and ultra-thin pillars. A Honda executive, who really should get out
sport, sport-plus and track, for those days when you might fancy an all-out burn-up around a racing track, rather than risking your licence. To help haul its 19-in front and 20-in rear alloy wheels to a halt, it has powerful carbon ceramic brakes. A cluster of four exhaust pipes adds a flourish to the rear. Though a Japanese icon, the computer sales & repairs NSX will be built at the Performance Manufacturing Centre (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, from imported and home-sourced parts. It is the second generation of the NSX and is launched exactly 25 years after the original made its debut at the Chicago Motor Show in 1989.

Measuring just 3,6 metres long and 1,6 metres wide, the new Celerio is unmistakably a member of the mini hatchback clan, making it the perfect choice for zipping through city traffic or squeezing into tight parking spaces. However, the impression of space when stepping into the cockpit of the Celerio is quite at odds with its compact footprint. One of the reasons is a height of 1,53 metres, which ensures an unusual level of headroom. And thanks to an extended wheelbase, short overhangs and space-saving suspension, interior space is maximised – as is the luggage compartment. A further hallmark of the new Celerio is its K10B three-cylinder engine. The 1,0-litre unit combines ample urge with high efficiency, ensuring zippy performance and excellent fuel consumption. Rated maximum power is 50 kW at 6 000 r/min, combined with a torque peak of 90 Nm at a relatively low 3 500 r/min.
Depending on model, the combined cycle fuel consumption figure of the Celerio is as low as 4,6 litres/100 km. That translates into an impressive operating range of more than 750 km from a single 35 litre tank. The Celerio is the first Suzuki model to be fitted with the marque’s new automated manual gearbox, which allows clutchless operation of a manual gearbox without the energy losses usually associated with conventional torque converter-based automatic transmissions. Instead, it uses an electro-hydraulic actuator to change gears without the need for a clutch pedal. The system offers both full auto and manual shift modes, and ensures a smooth shift action by synchronising clutch control, gearshift action and engine speed. A creep function allow smooth operation in stop-start city traffic, too. Benefits of the automated manual gearbox include reduced weight, greater fuel efficiency, affordability and a fun driving experience. It also ensures that the Celerio becomes the most fuelefficient automatic transmission car in South Africa.
