WAS – although one never knows…old habits die hard, or so I have been led to invited believe! to the media This media launch made a big launch of an interesting development impression on me – but for all the last week. There is a dire shortage of wrong reasons. It was during the accommodation for the elderly in this presentation by Glen Hesse, the man behind the very successful Dunkirk region and a growing awareness that this Estate in Salt Rock, that I was suddenly could be a hugely lucrative market. Now, for those with healthy bank accounts, the good news is that there will soon be another option available to you, this one on the boundary of Zimbali, overlooking the M4. Hey, the plans for wheelchair access, assisted living and all sorts of other excellent ideas pioneered by places like the Happy Autumn Retirement Home in the Big Smoke nearly had me reaching for the chequebook. but the life in your years! Don’t get me wrong – I think this will be a smashing development and a good investment. You can read all about it in this edition of Life & Style. I, however, will not be embracing the “Active over Fifties” mantra just yet because I still have some inappropriately boisterous living to do and until they take my Harley Davidson away from me, I intend to grow old as disgracefully as I can! Now, on a somewhat different tack, listen carefully, guys – Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and if you play your cards right, you could score some serious points. But if you allow the occasion to pass unnoticed, you will probably be in for a rough year. So, do the right thing and scan the pages of this publication for some excellent Valentine’s Day ideas that will help you make this Valentine’s Day a memorable one. HE drought in our area is severe and many families are now desperate for clean drinking water as their local sources have run dry.
Please help us to make a difference by supporting the LIFESTYLE CENTRE AND THE GIFT OF THE GIVERS WATER DRIVE for the month of February.

HE sports fields for Ashton International College on the newly acquired land adjacent to the existing Cambridge Field, have taken shape at a remarkable speed since the start of the 2016 school year. “The fields are being constructed as a matter of urgency, with hundreds of tons of soil already being dumped and levelled,” said Mr Erasmus, Executive Head.
Two full size rugby fields, a full sized cricket oval and parking for approximately 100 cars is part of Phase 1 of the development of the 7, 35 hectares of land acquired by Ashton in late 2015. The existing culvert will be developed as access to the main school grounds, and this will have an enormous impact on relieving the traffic at the current main entrance to the College. “Obviously with the drought, the process is slow, but in addition to the channelling of all the
storm water from the business parks into a small dam which will be used to irrigate the fields, a borehole will be sunk. This is essential, as Phase 2 includes the construction of a waterbased Astroturf and the maintenance of the sports fields.
A collection box has been located outside Lifestyle Superspar and we encourage you to drop off a donation of unopened bottled water at the Lifestyle Centre before the end of February. Your contribution is vital. Let’s work together to help those who have so little in our community by offering this love in action.

Concurrently with this development, foundations have been laid for 18 new classrooms for the Junior College, where the new Relio Amelio learning system will be introduced, another unique concept for Ballito. Completion of these new classrooms, also Phase 1 of the construction, is expected to be mid2016. The 2nd phase will include a new Junior College staffroom, a multipurpose indoor sports facility and offices. “This 5 year roll-out will see the construction of a Conference Venue and a Chapel on the land,” concluded Mr Erasmus.

GET YOUR HOUSE INSPECTED?
Inspect-a-home can assist you when buying a newly built or pre-owned home. PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION. When buying a previously owned house you accept that not everything is perfect. But you also don’t need any nasty surprises in the future that lead to unforeseen repair costs. The purpose of a home inspection report is to identify all the existing defects and understand their implications. This report is not a home inspection check-list or computer software generated report. Each report is written from scratch, specific to each property. Given that all houses require maintenance; the home inspection report reveals the more serious (potentially expensive) defects that may not have been disclosed by the seller. This new information can be used to have the repairs done before occupation.

When buying a newly built house, you normally assume that your builder has done everything correctly, hasn’t taken any short cuts and has used the correct building materials and methods. A recently inspected newly built house left the new owners in a serious situation as their new home is no longer in a liveable condition.
Bad building practices, incorrect building materials, scarce and unskilled tradesmen, as well as poor supervision and lack of attention to detail, lead to the new home buyer facing massive repair bills a few years down the line that would not have been necessary if things were done correctly in the first place. FRESH HOME AND DECOR IDEAS FOR FEBRUARY
“More is more. Less is never more—less is obviously less. Who wants less?” Interior Designer, Michelle Nussbaumer
LAZULI
A
SETS THE BENCHMARK FOR RETIREMENT LIVING ON THE NORTH COAST WORLDWIDE trend has seen baby boomers become a significant residential market.
South Africa specifically, has seen enormous growth in this segment, with people, post school children and in their early 50’s, heading from conventional residential neighbourhoods to secure retirement estates. In general, the market has only recently realised the demand for active living with facilities that suit both young and old retirees, and as a result current demand outstrips supply. In light of this, Glenn Hesse and the Cenprop team have conceptualised and created a retirement opportunity that effectively ‘ticks all the boxes’ for this market – a superb location, contemporary homes, and an unsurpassed lifestyle. Introducing Lazuli Coastal Lifestyle Estate, Glenn Hesse, Developer of Lazuli, says, “The North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, and more specifically Port Zimbali, has been identified as a true gem on our coastline. It really does present a unique way of life, especially for those entering or in their retirement years – with its pleasant climate, top golf courses, beautiful beaches, upmarket shopping centres, and nearby amenities it really does have it all.” Adding to the areas exclusive lifestyle, Lazuli is a 126-unit
estate offering sophisticated retirement living. Neighbouring the exclusive Zimbali Coastal Estate and boasting magnificent views of the ocean, lush sugar cane fields and golf course, the first phase, which launches on the 13th February 2016, will include 72 spacious 2, 3 and 4 bedroom luxury apartment. “The facilities at Lazuli are really what sets it apart from other estates in the area, ultimately setting the benchmark for gated retirement communities. The estate features a clubhouse with a heated lap pool, business suite, fitness centre, porter and shuttle services, restaurant and 24-hour security, to name but a few. Most significantly Lazuli will offer assisted living with 24-hour supervision. Our key objective for Lazuli is to create an estate where residents can live independent, healthy, happy and active lives; and we
are confident that we have achieved this” confirms Hesse. He continues, “A key differentiator for Lazuli is the fact that it caters for an active market, as well as those in the later stages of their retirement and looking for more specialised facilities”. Enhancing the upmarket, exclusive lifestyle that has been uniquely tailored for the active over50’s market, the apartments are characterised by a distinctive blend of modern design and traditional living. This is reflected in the generously spaced architecture, quality interiors and the flawless finishes. “In close proximity to King Shaka International Airport, the vibrant Umhlanga Village and Gateway Theatre Shopping, as well as the Big 5 Game Reserves to the North, the location truly is amazing and has ensured that the response prior to launch has already been extremely positive from potential buyers in KZN, Gauteng and even abroad. We are certain that Lazuli is poised to become the premium retirement estate for over 50’s market,” ends Hesse. In recent years, Cenprop has successfully developed a number of estates including Dunkirk Estate in Salt Rock, St. John’s Village in Howick, Mzingazi Golf Estate in Richards Bay, and Redlands Estate in Pietermaritzburg. FEBRUARY 2016
An old door & our story MARY FRASER We have been in our new house for over a year and up until now, our entry way wall has been a lonely, barren white wall. It’s the first thing you see when you step inside our house. So, I didn’t want to just put anything there – and so it sat – empty, empty, empty. I was just waiting to come across the perfect frame or spark of inspiration and I finally found it! It’s an old door. Each window serves as it’s very own frame and holds a photo that represents part of our story. The story of Mark and I – the story of our family. It’s an old door… or at least it used to be. The very first photo is an engagement picture and the last one is of our two precious babies. This door now serves as a constant reminder of where we started, how far we’ve come and how much further we get to go. Oh, and it’s a coat rack – bonus!! It’s an old door that’s bolted to our wall with four huge screws. Good thing I love the photos in there, because I’m pretty sure they won’t be changed all that often.
Here’s how I did it!
1
First things, first. You need an old door.
4
Next, you need tape. I highly recommend blue painters tape or masking tape – because it is forgiving and allows you to peel off and adjust it without destroying the photos.
Then, you need photos. Measure the size of the window openings – in most cases they will be an odd size. Mine were 9.5×13 – so I printed them on 11×14’s and trimmed them down to fit in the window.
5
2
Lastly, you need 4 huge screws, a handy man and a level. Put that baby on the wall! After it was on the wall we added the hooks, so it could be functional too! I am currently in love with this old door turned picture frame coat rack.
3
Once you trim the photos down to fit, number them and make an arrow pointing up so you know which way they go.

Spaces designed for Summer and Sun
Warm weather is here to stay, for a little while at least, and that means it’s vacation home season. Or rather, dream-of-vacation-home season for most of us. There are plenty of examples of cheesy summer home decoration – too many seashells, ocean-patterned furniture upholstery and an overabundance of wicker. Those things can be kind of fun, but here are four maxims of pleasureminded space building that can bolster relaxation, even if you own just the one home (or apartment).
Emphasize indoor-outdoor interconnectivity
The point is to enjoy your environment, not be shut off from it. A house that retains the feel of its external surrounds with ample windows, natural
light and corresponding colour theme will lend a sense of harmony and continuance.
Let location inform design
Natural history, regional culture, folk traditions and art, as well as local weather patterns, seasonality and light should all be considered. We need not surrender our individuality wholly to the dictates of our surroundings, but a sense of environmental belonging can really help ground a space. A high-quality rug or carpet is a good way to give a room design a foundation to build upon. Picking a contemporary carpet with a color scheme that references the natural environment can be a great building block for location-centric design.
Curl-up spaces
Indulging in idle time is vital for any worthwhile vacation. Hammocks, reading alcoves, window seats – a tucked-away space that invites people to stretch out and relax is a great way to promote relaxation.
Gather your group
It’s equally important to have spaces that fosters intimacy. A house that’s too big and disconnected lets people escape one another, and vacation time is also about solidifying family bonds. A space that’s too formal can come off as stiff. Better to have a variety of seating and to introduce a bit of whimsy to make folks feel invited. Consider not having furniture arranged around a TV.

The main clubhouse was substantially enlarged last year to cater for larger gatherings, significantly adding to the appeal of the facility. The expansion added an additional deck with more sunbeds for all to enjoy. Two new kiddies pools linked with a huge slide, and a lazy river were also added to the facility adding much excitement and fun for the younger residents! This new expansion of facilities was financed by the Home Owners Association and everyone on the estate is over the moon. Adding to the facilities available to residents and their visitors is the Mini Palm Clubhouse - a very attractive venue that includes a self-catering clubhouse, a highly acclaimed coffee shop operated by Allessandro Craparo, creator of the popular Science of Coffee brand. It also includes a kiddie’s swimming pool, a lap pool, an AstroTurf recreation area, and a really attractive jungle gym for the younger set to enjoy to their heart’s content. It’s little wonder why Palm Lakes continues to enjoy the popularity that it does and why, as an investment, it makes such good sense. FEBRUARY 2016
John Platter founded what is today Platter’s South African Wine Guide in 1979 and ran it until 1997. He’s back with a new wine book called My Kind of Wine (price: R375).
If the way to his heart is through his stomach, these Le Cruest pots may help...
ROMANCE IN A BOTTLE
From JOHN PLATTER’s new My Kind of Wine, available at all local bookstores.
Suitably charming, celebratory suggestions for Valentine’s Day toasts. And for out-of-the-ordinary (well, it is a special day, isn’t it?) breakfast, lunch and dinner companions. De Toren La Jeunesse Délicate - Yes, the consistently fine Stellenbosch Bordeaux-blend reds, Fusion V and De Toren Z produced by Emil den Dulk grab the headlines and international praise. But, a confession: our favourite in the range for its personality and deliciousness is this far less grand, lunch and summertime wine, served chilled. Not strictly speaking a pink, but not a fully paid-up red either. Four varieties, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon. Absolutely beautiful, fragrant and savoury at same time, just touch of oak to raise the profile. Superb with all sorts of food. Felicité Rosé - a Newton-Johnson Family and Stettyn collaboration: Worcester grapes. Unusual blend of Shiraz with about 20% Sauvignon Blanc for a crisp lift, with smattering Viognier. Dry, tasty, light. Fram Grenache Gris - Thinus Krüger’s deadpan humour has tasting audiences in stitches. Explaining how phenolic and sugar ripeness don’t always coincide, he’s says there’s a third “blerry” problem: trying to dovetail with “logistical ripeness – when the blerry truck breaks down over the weekend and can’t collect the grapes… So we winemakers make mistakes, but at least we’re not your doctors, and you won’t die. ..” Graham Beck Gorgeous - First released 2015. Complete cracker – and priced for “the rest of us”. Plus the alc. is only 11%... All the sassy tastes of juicy, discreet Chardonnay blended with red-berry Pinot Noir. A joy with light meals on a sunny day. Or warm evening. The most romantic of colours… Ken Forrester Grenache Rosé - From single vineyard, dedicated to making this style of wine (for specific early harvesting). Launched with a 2015 – should become another household KF label; crisp, light and racy, whispers of raspberry. We tasted it with a prawn curry: what a match! Delightful on its own, too.
Klein Constantia Rosé - From Constantia Cabernet Franc, with the grape’s appetising savoury edges, presented here in dry, gently-crisp, stimulating style.
And then, there are always BUBBLES! Graham Beck Blancs de Blanc All-Robertson Chardonnay vineyards, of Champagne vine clones. Delicate sweet nose and a whoosh of citrus and oranges on the palate in 2010. Racy lightness, vigorous bubbles. Graham Beck Cuvée Clive is the Wow-wine of the range. Only made in finest years. Aspirationally priced for smart occasions – but cheaper than Champagne…. Creamysmooth amid fireworks of long-repressed bubbles (5 years on lees). Chardonnay (70%) and Pinot Noir 2009. Some barrel-fermentation. Colmant There are five to choose from, including a pink. My favourite is the (NV – Non Vintage) Brut Chardonnay: light, racy, with a searing minerality. A beautiful, resonating, apple-fresh finish. It’s 70% home-grown, 30% Robertson grapes. Invariably sells out in six months. JeanPhilippe Colmant is a trailblazer in (speedy, free) door-todoor delivery. The NV Brut Reserve - about half-half PinotChardonnay - is weightier, with greater length, and includes Elgin grapes, too. The Sec Reserve shows trademark Colmant raciness but is rounder with a touch more sweet dosage, 21 gms/l. His food partner suggestions, apart from the usual suspects? Duck with a berry sauce. Blue cheese pizza. Karoo lamb chops. Fresh mussels. A hunk of Parmesan. Fresh fish, under-rather than over-cooked. Mussels (steamed in a splash of bubbly). And a curry with the Sec Reserve. Frans Malan of Simonsig pioneered the first Methode Champenoise bottle-fermented sparkling wine in South Africa in 1971. Kaapse Vonkel is still going strong… Decades later, they’ve had more practice than anyone in this business; their trio of sparklers exudes competence and confidence. For my taste, the pinnacle of piercing, feathery purity is delivered by the Simonisg Cuvée Royale Blanc de Blancs, 100% Chardonnay. Most recently tasted, the 2010… “A ballerina on her toes,” says Johan Malan. Silverthorn The Genie It wouldn’t be worth my while to leave this Non-Vintage, Methode Cap Classique rosé spakling wine off the check-out basket: it’s a new favourite of my 89-year-old mother-in-law, Rosemary Ladlau, gardener, author and past president of the World Association of Flower Arrangers. The unlikely grape is Shiraz, from the Robertson farm of Steenberg’s John Loubser and wife Karen. It’s plush, easy, charming. Good even without the queen mum’s say-so.
- From Thelema’s Elgin vineyards.
Silverthorn The Green Man Vintaged MCC, a classic, fine sparkle, really gripping elegance. Another piece of Steenberg MD John Loubser’s careful craftsmanship, from grapes off the family’s Robertson vineyards. A hit at our son’s wedding.
Tokara Siberia Grenache Rosé 2014 - Juicy, cheerful, cherry-
Steenberg makes a consistently fine 1882 Pinot Noir MCC. And most recently an irreverent, low-alcohol alternative, too, light and soft, festively-packaged, plausibly Prosecco-like: Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Sparkling. It’s flying.
Sutherland Grenache Rosé
Thoroughly fresh, dry, clean, silkily light-textured (the grape speaking) and light-tinted to match.
like, dry on palate. Light – 12,5% alc. Though fresh, crisp, not too bracing. Good all-round food match.
And two other family favourites: La Motte MCC and Villiera Cru Monro.

PAM MILLS CHECKS AND COMPARES PRICES – YOU CHOOSE WHERE TO SHOP
Pam’s shopping basket selection is made before entering any of the above stores, and totally without bias or prejudice. This means that a particular supplier might be fortunate enough to have more than one special in her selection at a given date, but another supplier could benefit from the next selection. As a rule it is always a good idea to compare prices of two small items against one large item – the result can be surprising. Also, it is always advisable to check your till slip as items on special are sometimes incorrectly charged at normal prices.

“You don’t find love, it finds you. It’s got a little bit to do with destiny, fate, and what’s written in the stars.” Anaïs Nin
THINGS YOU MUST IGNORE TO STAY HAPPY
H
APPINESS is a simple concept; yet, many people don’t realise it. We all want to be happy but we search for it in wrong places. Check out these 8 traps you should avoid if you want to be happy in life.
1. Gossip
Gossiping about others won’t do you any good and will only make you feel jealous and bitter. A person who gossips is the one whose personal life is not fulfilling enough and he/she wants to know what is happening in other people’s life.
2. Negative thinking
Thinking negatively is bound to affect your happiness since you are focusing on the grey areas of life, instead of positive emotions. Negative things keep you worried and disturbed all the time.
COSMETIC AND SKIN CARE MANUFACTURERS
3. What others think about you
Don’t wonder about what others might be thinking about you. You can never alter somebody’s opinion. But if you spend too much time on that and try to please all, you will eventually forget who you truly are.
4. Remembering troubles from the past
You must forget what happened in the past and how it impacted your life. Do not think too much about it as you cannot change what has already happened. Past troubles can affect a person badly if he/she refuses to move on. So forget the past, live in your present and focus on your future.
5. Holding onto resentment
We all do it and then feel too stressed to lead a happy life. Holding on to resentment will simply intensify your hard feelings and negative emotions, making you feel sad deep down. You must learn to let go and forgive the other person for his/her wrong behaviour. 6. Arguing to prove you are right All of us cling to our opinions, whether we are right or wrong. There is nothing wrong in presenting your point of view. But one must be rational and listen carefully to what others have to say.

Let go of undue expectations - they can undermine your happiness as you keep looking for life’s little rewards where there is none. Learn to accept people for who they really are and forget what they can do for you.
