KZN’S FAVOURITE READ
from the editor
T
he protracted drought on the North Coast seems to have been broken at last with the first good rains coming down steadily over the weekend and you can almost hear the countryside sighing with relief as life giving moisture seeps into the parched earth again.
We have been walking our dogs in the green belt adjacent to Zimbali and Seaward Estate for a good few years and I have never seen the flora looking so bleak. Undergrowth that is usually lush and dense, has thinned out considerably and I have become increasingly concerned about the fate of the creatures that inhabit this fragile environment. A quick study of the tracks in the sand on this walk reveal the presence of an astonishing array of small animals, birds and reptiles that have managed to hang on here despite the ever encroaching human settlement all around them. But the detritus of human settlement is now beginning to erode this last refuge. Last weekend we discovered piles of building rubble and household refuse illegally dumped in the heart of this sensitive environment. As there were personal papers among the litter, it wasn’t hard to identify where it had come from and a little detective work soon put me electronically in touch with the former owner of this refuse. As it transpired she is a wellknown estate agent in the area whose brother in law has been doing some renovations on her property so I did a little more scratching and came up with a contact number that put me in
telephonic contact with the brother in law. I hoped that he could shed some light on how this collection of building rubble, paint cans, books, letters, documents, compact discs, broken glass, old tyres and other paraphernalia came to be where it obviously didn’t belong. To his credit, he sounded genuinely perplexed and explained that some scrap hunters had happened by and agreed to remove the rubble in return for some scrap metal that he was also keen to get rid of. It would appear that these fine upstanding citizens had dumped the load illegally in the green belt where it remains as I write this missive. I have no reason to doubt him – there have been odd characters roaming the suburbs looking for scrap metal of late and they may still be around. My advice would be to send them on their way… with extreme prejudice…in case details of your personal life end up scattered about for all to see. Changing the subject, I was interested to read a local headline recently that boldly stated that crime was on the wane here. That’s great news, but obviously the fellows who dropped by in the dead of night to clear out our offices recently hadn’t got the message yet. Nor had the guys that broke into the houses around us. The police officers who responded so promptly to our matter, also hadn’t got the message nor had the CID staff who came to dust for fingerprints because they had been put on high alert to react to the alarming increase in housebreaking here of late…orders from the top, they said!
Still, if it’s in print, it must be true, hey! It’s even truer if you heard it on the radio. On 5FM we used to take bets to see who could start the biggest urban legend and it was amazing to see how quickly rumours of giant barble in Hartebeespoort Dam or Boer War gold hidden beneath the Piet Meyer Gebou (SABC H.Q. back in the day) spread among the gullible populace. Soon Ballito will have a radio station of its own when Radio Life & Style 88.0FM takes to the airwaves in December and, no, this is not another urban legend. The studio has been brilliantly designed by Mabette Vermaak, a local architect with a passion for style and creativity and you will be amazed at what will soon be arriving at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito. Another piece of exciting news is that the former Music Manager of 5FM, Loryn Cornick, will be joining us at Studio Manager and we have some interesting talent lined up to host the shows, but more about that closer to the launch. We are still looking for interns on the production side and there are still opportunities for those with a desire to host shows so if you are interested, please send your details to editor@lifeandstyle.org.za. If you have already made contact, some of our info disappeared when the thieves came calling, so it’s a good idea to mail me again to make sure we still have you on the radar. Welcome to another issue of Life & Style bringing the best of the North Coast exclusively to you, because we love you!

A Double Win for the de Charmoys AWESOME – that’s how you feel when your son wins the same St Charles College U/15 athletics champion trophy you won 38 years ago, says former music chart topper, Pierre de Charmoy. Pierre recently relived the joy of his childhood passion for athletics when he watched his son Philip compete in an athletics competition on the same school campus that he had been at many years previously. Philip had stiff opposition, including a Natal Schools athlete in his
age group. But he won the shot put, came second in the high jump, third in the long jump, third in the 100m and won the 4x100 relay. When Pierre was at St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg from 1972-1978, athletics was his favourite sport. He was Natal Schools runner up in the high jump and won most of the field events in his final year. You can imaging his joy when the trophy came home for a second time!

ver-and-above the fancy billboards, glossy magazine advertisements and massive television campaigns that are all battling it out for a piece of the consumer’s mind, there is now a new player... Google. Just witness the spectacular growth of Google’s share price as an example of customer’s eyes shifting away from traditional marketing delivery channels towards more targeted approaches.
Key components of a differentiation strategy are: • The quality of the service you provide • The degree to which it solves people’s problems by taking away pain in their life or giving them pleasure • How you make people who deal with you feel about themselves • The credibility, integrity and passion with which you deliver yourself into people’s lives, homes or businesses
There is a revolution under way in the branding wars and as a business owner you would be wise to stay abreast of the trend. More competition in the marketplace means a wider range of customer perceptions, combined with a narrowed attention span. In the face of thousands of messages being churned out daily for consumption by a saturated marketplace, we are constantly being bombarded by “wannabe” product suppliers.
It will be these aspects of your previous service delivery that will help you secure and deploy quality testimonials from your clients. Get these blended together in the right recipe and you’re off to a running start in the personal marketing war. Think about Disneyland. Water at its mountainous source is worth 5c per litre. Bottled, chilled and delivered at an arm’s length on a 30 degree summers day at the theme park, it is purchased for up to R50 or more per quart. What’s the difference? At source, water is a commodity. At Disneyland, it enhances the experience by making the enjoyment more pleasurable. The perceived value is exponentially higher!
Most companies compete on product features, pricing or a combination of both. Consider whether what you sell is available freely by your prospects or at a similar price chances are it is.
Stunning range of Traditional and Contemporary Garden Pots, Feature Pots and Water Features
A documented recommendation of your fine service and the experience that accompanies it may be the last form of commercial opportunism available in today’s hypercompliant world. Privacy regulations, “do not call lists” and increased consumerism have reduced the ability for businesses to source new clients. When connecting with prospects, we have to make sure that our first impression is memorable and credible. Written testimonials from clients who have experienced our products and service are powerful marketing tools to gain immediate respect.

he ever-growing legions of devotees who attend Diemersfontein’s ‘POT Parties’(dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure and playtime, augmented by volumes of the nowlegendary Coffee-Chocolate Pinotage) know that these festivals are the ultimate jols on the South African social calendar, so it may come as no surprise to fans that Pinotage-on-Tap was officially rated ‘Best Wine Event in the World’, at the 2014 Drinks International Tourism Awards in London.

This accolade – supplemented by Diemersfontein’s Carpe Diem Pinotage 2012’s recent win of the Novare SA Terroir Award for Best Pinotage – represents yet another notch in the belt for delighted owner of the Wellingtonbased wine estate, David Sonnenberg, who fondly describes his two flagship Pinotage brands as gifted sisters with different personalities; Carpé Diem being “a demure, classically-trained musician”, while the CoffeeChocolate is a “vivacious, rebellious rock star”. Created 14 years ago, this more unorthodox ‘sibling’ is the only South African wine to boast its own dedicated events (the first of which was a modest affair held at Diemersfontein in 2004). Since then, the enormously popular POT Parties have acquired cult status, luring lovers of the original CoffeeChocolate Pinotage to massive festivals in Cape Town, Jo’burg and Durban (with an inaugural bash held in the UK, in 2012). “Pinotage-on-Tap turns 10 this year, and to celebrate, we’re pulling out all the stops, making this year’s events bigger, better and more fun than ever before,” says Diemersfontein PRO and Events Manager, Rene Reece. The lovely KZN venue – The Litchi Orchard, now enlarged, with a permanent stage – will once again wow
guests with authentic Durban curries, along with some ‘exciting surprises’. “As always, folks can expect an endless flow of delicious Coffee Chocolate Pinotage (literally ‘on tap’), as well as an abundance of delectable food – with the arrival goodie bag, snacks, lunch and desserts all included in the ticket price. Then, naturally there will be fantastic live music from some of SA’s most awesome acts, exciting entertainment and games, and an allround cool social vibe. Plus, to coincide with POT’s 10th Birthday, there’s the additional fun and cachet of partying at the best wine event in the world!” With D-day approaching, social networks are apparently buzzing, while Computicket has reported lively ticket sales since bookings for Pinotage-onTap opened. “A word of caution,” adds Rene: “POT Fests are always sold out, and Diemersfontein is even contemplating a counselling hotline for those who miss out … so best drop what you’re doing right now and make sure you’re at the birthday bash of the year!” When: October 4th Where: The Litchi Orchard, Salt Rock

wo of the most prominent Ballito families came together with friends and family to celebrate the marriage of their children recently. Tasmin Love and Dustin Stevens were married on May 17th in the Umhlali Methodist church in what can only be described as a fairytale wedding. They have been soul mates for the past eight years and now they are husband and wife. The reception at a new wedding venue in Umhlali called Maroupi was a gorgeous affair with top notch catering by Jacqui Rey and her expert Foodmatters team and the wedding cake by Kerry Hedges of Yellow Canary. The beautiful dresses for the bride and her mother were created by the talented Trish Ollive and floral arrangements were a joint effort by Ballito Country Flowers and award winning arranger, Jane Matkovich. They were absolutely lovely. But nothing could outshine the bridal couple on their special day. ...we wish them a lifetime of joy and happiness!

Your Budget Really, Really Well.
not spend a cent or book a single e until the two of you have thoroughly d out your budget. This is where
a couple can go wrong early in the game and never recover. They fall in love with a venue and book it right away, then find they have to skimp on everything else, including necessities.
Don't Cut The Wrong Corners.
Sure, Uncle Harry would love to take your wedding photos, but will you be happy with them? Probably not. Always hire professional vendors. You will save yourself a lot of stress by hiring well-qualified people, whose work you can count on.
Don't Be A Superwoman.
Brides often get this idea that they can do everything but it takes over 240 hours to plan a wedding, so get plenty of help from family, friends or a wedding planner.
Take Steps To Be Comfortable.
Break in your wedding shoes! This may sound trivial, but it's the most important
piece of advice for brides, moms and attendants. Why do women think they can be on their feet for six to eight hours in a pair of shoes they've never worn and not end up with painful blisters? It not only makes you uncomfortable, but it detracts from any formal affair when everyone is barefoot as soon as the first dances are over.
Orchestrate.
Seven to 10 days before the wedding, call your vendors to confirm details. Give everyone a timeline of the day. The biggest mistake is leaving any of this to chance.
Have A Blast!
Far too many brides wish they'd spent less time worrying and more time having fun. The day goes by so quickly, and you really want to be there, emotionally. Enjoy the people who are there to celebrate your day with you. Remember: Guests are only as comfortable and as happy as their hosts.

Stephanie Wills - Lifestyle Health
inter is the season of colds & flu and spring, the season of allergies. Antibiotics and antihistamines; the medications of choice, may improve the respective symptoms but unfortunately also impair the digestive system. It is essential post-illness to restore gut health! A healthy gut not only ensures proper food absorption and nutrient assimilation but also provides the body's first line of defence against future infection.
The following are
3
easy ways to help heal your digestive system:
1. Give Your Gut a REST
In order to heal, you need to give your digestive system a break! Quit the processed junk food, soy-based products, fizzy drinks, sugar, refined carbohydrates, grains, legumes, alcohol, coffee, gluten and dairy: All of which are hard to digest and add unnecessary strain on an already struggling system. Eat simply and cleanly. This means lots of salads, vegetables, sprouts, green superfood powders (wheatgrass, barley grass etc.), soaked nuts and seeds, fish, eggs and healthy fats together with small amounts of fruit and meat from grass-fed, hormonefree animals. Only drink pure water, coconut water, kombucha, green juices and herbal teas. Make sure you eat slowly and mindfully and that you chew your food properly. It may also be beneficial to take a full spectrum digestive enzyme supplement to take some of the pressure off of the gut. Another way to give your gut a rest is to reduce stress. Conditions such as IBS, constipation, bloating, flatulence and acid reflux often afflict those who work extremely hard, are constantly too busy, have family problems, are under financial pressure or have experienced a traumatic event: External stressors that cause internal problems. If that's you, now is a good time to take a mini vacation, sign up for a Pilates or yoga class, practice deep breathing exercises, spend time in nature, sleep more, have a 'technology-detox'... or whatever it is that will help you relax and de-stress!
2. RESTORE with
Targeted Foods and Supplements Once you've given your gut a well-deserved rest, it's time to restore what was damaged with targeted foods and supplements: Starting with bone broth! Yes, I know it sounds like a food from the
stone-ages, but bone broth is simply home-made stock. It is so easy to make once you know how (see the recipe section on our website) and is packed FULL of nutrients. In particular, the protein gelatine, which helps heal and repair the gut lining, prevents harmful bacteria from adhering to the gut walls and inhibits infection. We recommend you drink a cup of bone broth a day to reap the most benefit. Next, is to include a teaspoon of Siberian pine nut oil on an empty stomach before meals. It contains pinolenic acid; an active fatty acid that helps heal the gastrointestinal lining, optimize digestion and improve nutrient absorption and assimilation. In the supplement department the following 3 nutrients are all potent digestive healers:
•L-Glutamine, the most abundant amino acid in the
human body, aids in tissue maintenance and repair, especially for the cells of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
•
Aloe Vera provides soothing support for the digestive system. It can help relieve constipation and promotes internal, natural healing and regulation of the GI tract. Deglycyrrhizinated • Licorice helps soothe
and restore the gut by increasing the production of gastrointestinal mucosal cells. It also helps cleanse the colon, ease constipation and treat GI disorders such as colitis and diverticulosis.
3. REINOCULATE with
Good Bacteria In the diet department, this means include plenty of fermented and cultured foods such as sauerkraut, coconut yoghurt (see our website for recipe), kimchee, lacto-fermented pickles, certain cheeses (do your homework here), fermented
beets (beet kvaas) and miso. Fermented foods are packed full of beneficial bacteria that help recolonise the gut. And not only are they delicious and can be eaten with any meal, they are also easy to digest, enhance nutrient bioavailability and even help get rid of anti-nutrients such as phytic acid (grains, beans, nuts and seeds). In terms of supplements, a good quality high-dose probiotic should be taken for a few weeks or until you feel your gut health has been restored. It is also advisable to up the amount of 'pre-biotic' foods in your daily diet. These are literally foods that feed the beneficial bacteria in your GI tract and help them proliferate on their own. Foods that contain lots of natural prebiotics include; asparagus, carrots, garlic, artichoke, leeks, onion, radishes, tomatoes, turmeric and cinnamon. Hate those foods!? Pre-biotics are also available in supplement form. And That's It! When your digestive system is functioning at its optimum, you glow with health. Take the necessary steps to help heal your gut and your weight, mood, mental clarity, and overall health will improve significantly.

J
oseph Pilates was born in 1884 and died in 1967 at the age of 83. As a child he battled a series of ailments including asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever which led to a lifelong quest for health and fitness. Mr Pilates designed most of his equipment like the Reformer and the Cadillac, from hospital beds. The Pilates Wunda chair was designed for those who needed assistance to sit or stand and the springs of all of his equipment assist those who need assistance, eventually teaching us about resistance. Mr Pilates was way ahead of his time in my opinion and was obviously a man with compassion and the determination to help people who needed it.
Mr Iyengar who I mentioned in my first article was also frail as a child. By doing Yoga was he able to become both physically and mentally stronger. In his 70 or more years of teaching and experience he brought in the use of props to assist those who wanted to experience the benefits of yoga. If we cannot do it by ourselves then why not use a wooden block or a belt etc. This does not mean that the props become a crutch, by no means, but our bodies need to imprint what is correct and if the props can help us to achieve this, we avoid “samskara” which is bad imprinting. Mr Joseph Pilates and Mr BKS Iyengar spent their entire lives committed to their practice. Both of these amazing men mention similar principles in their books. Maybe they used different words or different analogies but they shared
similar principles! They dedicated their life experiences to the benefit of other people. I am passionate about both disciplines, and although they are different in so many ways, they have much in common - the breath, alignment, stretch, strength, stability, mobility, mental and physical concentration, movement, flow and precision. Both disciplines include: •Utilising the breath correctly. •lengthening muscles which creates strength that enables us to hold our own body weight which is sufficient weight, through planks, handstands, downward dogs etc. (length brings strength) •Flexibility and mobility to all joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons etc. •Contracting muscle to bone prevents osteoporosis and atrophy (loss of muscle mass as we age). •Articulation of the spine. •Abdominal strength / spinal strength. •Awareness, of posture, alignment, balance, imbalance, stability, concentration. •Cardio -once we progress, both of these disciplines have a “cardio” heart raising aspect to them which is a challenge most are not aware of. The list goes on and both disciplines can be maintained for life because even though we may be unaware, we do Yoga & Pilates everyday of our lives. I am an Advanced Teacher and Teacher Trainer of Classical Pilates. While I am not a BKS Iyengar teacher yet, I am a qualified Yoga teacher with the Young Yoga Institute of South Africa (YYI). The work of an Iyengar teacher

never ends and to become a Senior Iyengar teacher can take up to 12 years so it will be a life long journey. The reason I mentioned the above is that the YYI was founded by Winnie Young from Durban. At the young age of 54 Winnie started Yoga and travelled in 1969 to Mauritius to attend Mr Iyengar’s workshop and continued to study under him for many years travelling to Poone in India. Winnie Young died in 2008 at the age of 96. She wrote a number of books including Yoga for Christians. A quote from Winnie Young “Adapt and Accommodate”. I received a number of calls after my first article in the Life & Style and I realised that there are a lot of “unconditioned” bodies/people out there who don’t know where to start. Elderly, young and unfit, inflexible, complete beginner, overweight, certain medical problems, etc. Most feel intimidated to attend a general class where they know they will not be able to cope. I am therefore trying out two classes for the “unconditioned body” - Pilates on a Tues at 9am-10am and Yoga on a Thursday 9am – 10am. If you would like to try either of these rather than a general class, please contact me. The first class for each will be free of charge to establish their viability but there is limited space so book quickly for Tues 7th October and Thurs 9th October. For any information regarding this article please call me. Namaste,
believe that grand old dame of Umhlanga Hotels the Beverley Hills turned 50 recently? Brainchild of Sol Kerzner, the hospitality genius and named after his daughter, she’s been hostess to an impressive list of glitterati over the years. It was a bubbly affair – pun intended. The dress code of white with sparkle, elegance and panache gave scope for great glam and people didn’t disappoint. I was reminded yet again how just having the discipline to get onto the yoga mat with regularity makes it possible to enjoy life to the full.
Dom Perignon, the monk who first played around with Methode Cap Classique to get bubbles to rise out of the glorious liquid, yelled “come” to his
compatriots “I am drinking stars!” It must have been a night of great merriment in the monastery! No doubt vespers began a little late the following morning. Our tipple of the day was Moet
& Chandon and it flowed! Thankfully and typically food was children’s portions arranged on the plate by an interior decorator so overeating wasn’t an issue. The wind which seemed to have been gusting for weeks just settled down as though on one of the hotels chaises for a foot rub and went to sleep. We had a perfect day. Man rose to the occasion with aplomb but Mother Nature was the star of the show. Thank you God for our beautiful planet and for putting us in such a special corner of it. So there we were on a sunny Spring Sunday afternoon, a crazy unlikely multi-coloured group of people gathered together on an impossibly green and manicured piece of lawn at the edge of the land on a champagne induced haze of love and companionship. It just worked and why the hell shouldn’t it? Have a party, invite some strangers. Don’t put out any nasties from packets to spoil the taste of your champagne – you don’t need to eat that junk. Keep food nutritious and to a minimum. You’ll be surprised how little you need, the Beverly Hills discovered that trick years ago. That’s why it’s still a viable concern. Oh, and first get seriously into yoga to make sure your body can take it and to heighten your senses. Dress up and remind yourself how beautiful you are. Have fun – it’s good for you! Carpe diem! Dogs Are As Intelligent As Five-Month-Old Babies,
D
Claims Study
ogs possess skills similar to those of a five-month-old baby, researchers have revealed.
As a baby's brain develops they learn to notice the actions of people. Until now, this had been thought to be a trait exclusive to humans and nonhuman primates. The results are important because they show that dogs, like children, can recognise goal-directed behaviour. This means they know where to look and how to respond to people when it seems like something important might happen - which is also what infants learn to do. In the Milan University study the authors tried a test used on five monthold babies on dogs, and found the animals could perform it as well as children. In the test 50 pet dogs were placed in a room with a researcher and their response to an experiment was recorded. In the experiment the domestic dogs were shown a human interacting with two objects, a globe and watering can. First, the dogs watched as the person interacted with the globe. Then, when the position of the globe and watering can were switched, the dogs again watched the person and the globe in the new location. When the person
then switched to interacting with the watering can, however, the dogs’ attention also shifted to the watering can. Like children, the dogs spent more time watching the human to whom they were used to watching in the experiment, rather than watching the spot they were watching at first. When an inanimate object was used with the two objects, the same response was noted. And in a third experiment, dogs looked longer at the person interacting with the new object in the familiar location rather than the familiar object in a new location. ‘Results provide the first evidence that a non-primate species can perceive another individual’s actions as goaldirected,’ the researchers write in their paper.
“As a man thinketh, so is he…” Proverbs 23:7

W
e live in a
world composed of impossibilities; no logic could account for the wonder, diversity or power of life in both its seen and unseen forms. There is more going on, it seems, than meets the eye. The power to create and expand this amazing adventure we call life is ours, it is quite literally our birthright. Our thoughts allow us entry into a world of creation which can only be accurately described as Magick – in the full arcane meaning of the word, that is: “the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will...” Over the last twentyish years I have been teaching this as part of a larger curriculum of work dealing with all aspects of the mind sciences and have had amazing results with a broad cross section of humanity, on four different continents and all walks of life; I have taught Olympians and world champions, business leaders, special forces operators and school groups. Everyone can achieve peak performance and live the life of their dreams. The common denominator is their brains – we all have a reality creating machine of the first magnitude, all it needs is a user manual.
All belief systems incorporate an understanding of these principles to some degree, as illustrated by the opening quote from Proverbs; to the religious it is Prayer, the ancient systems call it Spell casting and to the Metaphysician it is the use of Thoughtforms. The simple bottom line of this is that what we continually think about is what our lives become. It sounds very simple and yet, as much as new age gurus
would have you believe it, it is anything but simple. The thoughts that are involved in this process are not the ones you carefully groom in a kind of “What you can dream you can achieve” way but embrace all of our thought including our subconscious programming. Many of us repeat negative or damaging patterns from our early years, without ever being aware of them; feelings of insecurity, unworthiness or low selfesteem erode our ability to achieve our true potential. We all carry negative baggage to some degree and the unbundling of this is the first step to growth, so ask yourself, completely honestly, what are you worth - not just materially but in all areas of your life – and in what areas do you settle for less than you want? Once this life audit is in hand set your sights on your dreams and keep them in mind with a laser like intensity. After that sit back and watch the Magick unfold. For those who would like to master this the Foundation will be running a local course in Ballito in November, we can be contacted on the e mail address below. He has taught government departments, universities, Olympians and peak achievers in the corporate and private sectors from all over the world. KZN Race Features New Drakensberg Drop-Off
P
articipants in next month’s Berg & Bush mountain bike stage race can look forward to a spectacular new drop off the Drakensberg escarpment, organisers have announced.
Known as the Drakensberg Drop, the new section will take riders on a long and scenic descent via ancient cattle paths from the Free State border into KwaZulu-Natal. Race organiser Gary Green said his route building teams had been working hard to prepare the changes in time for the event, which rolls out from the new Border Post start venue at the top of Oliviershoek Pass on October 10. “The Drop makes a far better descent off the mountain as it winds its way down through the hills and valleys and along a river bank, where the riders can really enjoy the amazing scenery.” Day one alone would now feature over 2
200m of descending with 1 500m of climbing, said Green. He said participants in the two three-day options – the Descent and Great Trek – could anticipate further changes on day two, with the traditional boat crossing of Spioenkop Dam abandoned in favour of uninterrupted riding. “We now approach Spioenkop Mountain from another direction, using the old Fairview road, which was the original wagon track between Ladysmith and Bergville.” Coming down off the gruelling Spioenkop ascent, he said riders would also encounter a new section of berms and jumps, named the Bell Run in honour of section sponsor Bell Equipment. “The Bell Run has also been included on the original two-day event, so our more social riders won’t be left out of the fun.” Green said many additional sections of fastflowing singletrack were being included, as his team continued to uncover welltrodden cattle and game paths. “At the moment, we have three teams of four people who go out every day to ensure that the route is race ready. But most of the additional route preparation is done by the local people living in those areas.”

The newest superfood?
WALKING - and experts say it's far better for you than intense bursts of exercise Evidence suggests a mixture of physical activity and inactivity may be more important for chronic disease risk than just physical activity Fitness experts have revealed the latest 'superfood' - and it'll cost you a lot less than chia seeds or goji berries. They say walking is the 'superfood of fitness' and that it may be far better for you than bursts of intense exercise. Scientist Katy Bowman has explained in her book, 'Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement', that the body requires movement nutrients - just like dietary nutrients. 'Walking is a superfood. It's the defining movement of a human,' said Bowman, a biomechanist based in Ventura, California. 'It's a lot easier to get movement than it is to get exercise.' Researchers say emerging evidence suggests that combined physical activity and inactivity may be more important for chronic disease risk than physical activity alone. Dr. Carol Ewing Garber, president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), notes that fitness-walking guidelines of 10,000 steps per day may be too much for many. 'About 7,500 steps may be more accurate,' she said, adding that current ACSM recommendations call for at least 150 minutes of activity each week. Garber, a professor of movement sciences at Columbia University in New York, said research suggests that even one bout of exercise causes beneficial physiological effects. But she concedes that walking does not do everything. It is less beneficial for bones than running, and for strength, it is better to lift weights. 'Still,' she said, 'If you're going to pick one thing, research says it should be walking.'

The firm is expected to reveal them alongside a new version of its Mac software called Yosemite, and news iPads next month. The new iPads are set to use a thinner design similar to the iPhone 6 and include a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. 'A new line of iMacs with ultra high-resolution Retina Displays is in late testing stages within Apple, according to our sources who have used the future desktop computer,' said 9to5 Mac. 'While the machine will sport a thin profile similar to that of the current design, which was introduced in 2012, it will be packed with new internals such as faster processors and improved WiFi antennas,' it says. The iPad is expected to have a 9.7 inch screen, while the new version of the iPad mini will have a 7.9 inch screen, Bloomberg earlier reported,
citing people familiar with the matter. The iPads are expected to have a thinner, curved design similar to the new iPhone 6, and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Apple is also believed to be working on a larger 'iPad Plus' for release next year with a 12.9inch screen. The firm will also launch a new version of its Mac software called Yosemite. The Yosemite software will allow users to make and receive calls and notifications from their Mac - even if their iPhone is in another room. The software has also been overhauled with a new 'flat' look, and can search the web without having to open a browser. The software is the first to be overseen by Apple's Sir Jonathan Ive, who was recently given responsibility for the design of both hardware and software at Apple.

O
n Friday the 26th September 2014, Brettenwood Coastal Estate successully launched the third phase of their hugely popular retirement development, Forest Village on Brettenwood Coastal Estate. With only 35 homes in this phase, the emphasis is on privacy, security and luxury, with the freedom to dream and most importantly, the freedom to enjoy life’s rewards.
This new phase includes five upmarket design options, ranging in size from 171sqm to 264sqm. Choose either a two or three bedroom home with superior finishes including SMEG appliances and Grohe fittings, casear stone counter and vanity tops, professionally designed kitchens with carefully thoughtout layout and luxurious flooring. Cladded exterior feature walls with indigenious landscaped gardens blend into the idyllic, tranquil location.
“With more than half the development having sold out in one day, it appears that Forest Village is setting the benchmark in luxury homes for retirees”, said Peter Cameron, Principal Agent on Brettenwood Coastal Estate.
Offering a spectacular location, with each home having sea or forest views and a few having complete privacy with the natural coastal forest behind, this development is sure to sell out exceptionally quick. If you would like to find out more about this exclusive retirement village, please contact one of our on-site sales advisors.
