HERE’S been a lot of smoke in the corridors of power this week. This is not unusual - smoke and mirrors is the stock in trade for those who frequent these hallowed halls but Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi wants none of it. He plans to cut out all smoking in South Africa. Will he succeed in his quest to save us all from pulmonary apocalypse? While I applaud his position, I just can’t see it being taken seriously by the rest of the gang. Here’s the story:

But the tobacco industry in South Africa is a huge contributor to the fiscus and employs a significant number of people. I87 farmers employ around 10 000 people to produce 15 million kg of tobacco which ultimately becomes 28.9billion cigarettes smoked with gusto by 7.7 million tobacco addicts and apprentice addicts in South Africa every year. And while everybody seems to agree that smoking will eventually kill you, it generates a massive R11.9 billion in excise and VAT revenue into the coffers controlled by Aaron’s colleagues. See where this is heading? And if smoking doesn’t kill you, there are other options according to another maverick with a smoking gun in the corridors of power (however tenuous that might be right now). National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega is keen to explain why despite reports of crime in South Africa being on the decline, people continue to die violently and horrifically. The 2014/15 crime stats showed an increase in contact crimes, including murder. In the year under review, 49 South Africans were killed daily. What was that? Yes, you read it correctly…49 South Africans are being murdered every day. That’s more than are being killed in the combat zone in Syria, to put it in perspective.

According to Riah, it’s a culture of entitlement that is contributing to the rising violent crime rate. Apparently she believes that communities are becoming inured to the occurrence of violence and the situation is exacerbated by the lack of balance between citizens’ rights and responsibilities. ‘A culture of entitlement has risen in the country that apparently justifies almost any action taken to address grievances and promote own interests. Communities have to take ownership of their own best interests including the creation of an environment free of crime and fear,’ Phiyega said. So it would appear that the National Police Commissioner has become the champion of DIY safety and security and just where the South African Police Services fit into the picture is a mystery….smoke and mirrors, I tell you. Still, the sun will come out tomorrow and life is for the living, so enjoy the experience. I have it on fairly good authority that it’s better than the alternative!

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi is planning to outlaw smoking areas, along with electronic cigarettes. ‘The whole thing must go. There mustn’t be a corner for smoking in SA,’ Motsoaledi is quoted as saying in a Weekend Argus report. ‘We want to re-examine the issue of having smoking areas. Can anyone tell me the wisdom of having a smoking area in a hospital? Is there any need to put a corner for smoking in any public space? No. Because there is no reason for anyone to smoke.’ The Minister also reiterated his commitment to outlawing the use of electronic cigarettes. This was in line with commitments made at the UN Sustainable

Development Goals Conference, where limitations on e-cigarettes to tackle non-communicable diseases was in the spotlight. ‘One way or another, we will bring the whole concept of e-cigarettes under control. We can’t exclude a total ban. They (the manufacturers) don’t have good intentions. Theirs is to frustrate the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control... All of these people are coming to us with cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, with all these ailments. So we better stop it before it happens.’

JOHN WEST ‘IS BREAKING HOME INSPECTIONS GREEN PLEDGE ON TUNA’ FOR BUYERS Brand accused of ignoring promises in ‘irresponsible’ hunt for cheap fish

AND SELLERS.

B

OHN WEST, one of the world’s biggest canned fish brands, has been accused of breaking promises and ‘trashing the oceans’ for cheap tuna.

A new study claims that 98per cent of the tuna sold under the famous name is caught using destructive fishing methods that cause damage and waste. The company promised in 2011 that 100per cent of its canned tuna would be caught using sustainable methods by 2016, however experts at Greenpeace say the current figure is just 2per cent. As a result, John West has been put at the bottom of a league of 11 brands and supermarkets in terms of the way it sources the fish in a study published this week. Greenpeace said that nearly all of John West’s tuna is caught in nets using so-called Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) which indiscriminately kill a variety of other marine life, including sharks and even endangered sea turtles. The FADS effectively attract a large number of species to a particular area and they are then hoovered up – alongside valuable tuna – by walls of nets. Oceans campaigner at Greenpeace UK, Ariana Densham, (correct) said: ‘In 2011 John West guaranteed consumers its tuna would be 100per cent sustainable by 2016 – but with little over a year to go, a pathetic two per cent of its tuna is caught in a way which minimises harm to other marine life. It’s clear John West has no intention of keeping its sustainability promise.’ She said: ‘John West continues to plumb the depths of irresponsibility – flooding our shelves with cheap tuna which comes at a huge cost: the indiscriminate killing of marine life. It’s also undermining the worldleading standard set by responsible supermarkets. ‘The tide is turning on companies which sell unsustainable tuna and unless John West keeps its promise to consumers to stop using destructive fishing methods, it will find itself cast adrift.’ John West said it has been unable to find enough tuna caught using the sustainable methods approved by Greenpeace.

Have you found the home you want to purchase? Are you worried about hidden defects that may end up costing you more than you bargained for? When viewing your dream home, you may see minor repairs, but it’s unlikely that you will climb into the roof or check for any underlying source, causing damage. This is why you need Inspect-A-Home. For peace of mind, home inspections are essential if you are selling or buying a home. The purpose of the home inspection is to uncover any existing faults and identify potential problems. A detailed report is drawn up that lists the findings, as well as suggested remedies. Home inspections are thorough, taking 2-3 hours to complete on a standard 3 bedroom house, and cover every aspect of the property from roof to boundary walls. Inspect-A-Home does not only report on apparent defects, but also offers preventative and maintenance advice. If the advice is followed, you will be spared unnecessary expense in the future. The cost of the inspection is dependent on the size of the property and the complexity of the dwelling eg double storey, multiple roof cavities, etc.

WIN IN BUSINESS BY CONNECTING VALUE SEAN DERCKSEN

WITH

I

N order to build upon the sales you are already making in business, one needs to connect the allimportant value we demonstrate with trust. Here are seven rules that are critical to help establish trust in business.

them with a series of safe, high-value offers that they can choose to accept or not. These offers help them understand and address their problems, and establish your credibility as an authority. The essential feature of a pulling strategy is that the prospect does not feel pressured, and so they feel safe examining what you offer.

1. USE “PULL,” NOT “PUSH.” Traditional business development efforts tend to push products / services upon a prospect, which can turn them off. The psychology of trust is about attracting your client towards you. You provide

2. TRUST INCREASES WITH FAMILIARITY. This rule states that the more a prospect sees you, hears you and has contact with you, the more familiar he or she becomes with you; and the more he or she trusts you. However, familiarity must be based on providing value. 3. TRUST WORKS LIKE A BANK ACCOUNT. In his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven Covey compares relationships to a bank account. Trust with prospects works the same way. You make “deposits” by doing things that bring value to the prospect. The more deposits you make, the bigger your account and the more trust and credibility you have. Conversely, you make “withdrawals” when you do something that hurts the relationship. 4. RESPECTED, OBJECTIVE THIRD PARTIES CAN HELP TO BUILD TRUST. People may not trust you (yet), but they will trust respected, objective third parties that speak favourably about you. Therefore, things like testimonials, referrals or even articles in newspapers about you all help to build credibility and trust in your market. 5. EMPATHY BUILDS TRUST. When people know that you can step in their shoes, understand their problem and its costs and suggest what you would do if you were them, they

7. THE TOTAL EXPERIENCE THE PROSPECT HAS OF YOU MUST BE TRUSTWORTHY. From your first interaction to the final deliverable, you must prove yourself to be worthy of the prospect’s trust. This means that you must continuously show that you understand their needs, can get results and that you watch out for their best interests. The economics of trust are extremely powerful. Trust creates a reinforcing, upwards spiral that builds on itself over time. - The more value you can show before a sale (especially with proof), the more likely the prospect will be to take a “leap of faith” and work with you. - Once a prospect sees your value in practice by working with you, trust increases. - The more a prospect knows you and likes you, the more likely they are to see value in what you do.

trust you more. This means that you should approach prospect interactions from their perspective. 6. BY BEING HUMAN YOU BUILD TRUST. People buy from people, not businesses. In other words, YOU represent the brand and ultimately control the sale. Be personable, because prospects buy from people that they like and that means being human.

The exhibition was opened with a lovely gathering of artists and art lovers enjoying the wine and canapes along with the emotions evoked by works from Julie Mayo, John Smith, Norma Wiles, Rob Domijan, Nicola Pletts, Penny Brown, Owen Llewellyn Davies, Makiwa Mutomba, Shirley Brandon and Kirsty Hall who interpreted the various facets and moods of Durban at its finest. ROFESSOR STEPHEN HAWKING has previously said artificial intelligence could control humans in 100 years.

Now, in his latest dire warning, the physicist claims that if AI doesn’t conquer humanity, an advanced alien civilisation may do so instead. ‘If aliens visit us, the outcome could be much like when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,’ Professor Hawking said in a recent interview. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach,’ Hawking said recently Hawking is currently heading up a major search for intelligent alien life using two of the world’s most powerful telescopes. The telescopes will scour one million of the closest stars to Earth for faint signals thrown out into space by intelligent life beyond our own world. Scientists taking part in the $100 million initiative will also scan the very centre of our galaxy along with 100 of the closest galaxies for low power radio transmissions. And the search is heating up. Last week, news that Mars may contain liquid water reignited the belief that alien life could soon be found. ‘To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,’ said Hawking. ‘The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.’ But Hawking says if aliens don’t kill off the human race, then climate change or AI could do so instead. ‘I think the survival of the human race will depend on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe, because there’s an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy Earth,’ he said. ‘Computers will overtake humans with AI at some point within the next 100 years. When that happens, we need to make sure the computers have goals aligned with ours.’

Last week, news that Mars may contain liquid water reignited the belief that alien life could soon be found. Pictured are marks on Mars, which lengthen and darken as the seasons change. Scientists say these are first evidence of their kind ever found on another planet and they’re the first step in confirming life can exist there.

In July, Professor Hawking and Tesla founder Elon Musk led 1,000 robotics experts in an open letter warning that ‘Autonomous weapons will become the Kalashnikovs of tomorrow’. The strongly-worded letter called for an outright ban on ‘offensive autonomous weapons beyond meaningful human control’ in an effort to prevent a global AI arms race. The experts point out that, unlike nuclear weapons, AI weapons require no costly or hard-to-obtain raw materials. This means they will become ubiquitous and cheap for all significant military powers to mass-produce. If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable,’ the letter states. The authors predict that it will only be a matter of time until smart weapons appear on the black market and in the hands of terrorists, dictators and warlords. They claim AI technology has reached a point where the deployment of such systems is now feasible within years, rather than decades. ‘Autonomous weapons are ideal for tasks such as assassinations, destabilising nations, subduing populations and selectively killing a particular ethnic group,’ the letter states. ‘We therefore believe that a military AI arms race would not be beneficial for humanity.’

HE Titanic’s last lunch menu, saved by a first-class passenger who climbed aboard a lifeboat whose crew was said to have been bribed to row away instead of rescue more people, has been sold at a US auction.

The online New York auctioneer Lion Heart Autographs offered the menu, which sold for £58,166 and two other previously unknown artefacts from Lifeboat 1. OFFEE is one of the most traded commodities in the world and has been enjoyed for centuries.

Coffee made from freshly roasted coffee beans is loved and drunk the world over and there is a wealth of ways of making and serving it. But with all the variety out there, what constitutes a GOOD cup of coffee and what is the best way to prepare the perfect cup?

Arabica verses Robusta

Arabica is a superior bean grown at higher altitudes and produces a superior cup of coffee. Robusta is cheaper to produce as it grows at a lower altitude but this adds a slight bitterness to the coffee. Robusta beans contain more caffeine than Arabica beans – almost double the amount, so when buying a bag of beans be sure to have a look at the Arabica versus Robusta parentage. The higher the Arabica percentage, the better the quality of your coffee.

Secondly, freshness

Just how fresh are your beans? Often beans sit on the shelves of supermarkets for months. For better results it is

preferable to buy your beans directly from boutique roasters.

Thirdly, the grind

Anyone who has ever savoured the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans will know, the flavour of the coffee is at its best immediately after the beans are ground. The proper grind is critical to extract an espresso “crema”. When grinding your beans, keep a few factors in mind. What are you trying to achieve from your cup of coffee and what equipment are you using to brew that perfect cup in? This is important to determine the right grind. The general rule of thumb is the finer the grind, the stronger the coffee, but keep your equipment in mind. A Plunger the cheapest and easiest option and one of my favourite home tools. It needs a course to medium grind, but don’t forget to let the coffee sit for a while. A filter machine needs a fine grind and, slightly coarser is preferable for a drip machine. An espresso machine likes a very fine almost powder grind. But remember nothing is set in stone, experiment a bit and have some fun...

HE Crawford North Coast community showcased their heritage with an evening of musical and dance performances at Sibaya’s iZulu Theatre on Tuesday, 22 September under the banner of Urban Pops. The LIV Village Choir joined with the KZN Wind Band and both the College and Prep schools choirs, filling the stage with magnificent sights and sounds which made for a truly remarkable event. The level of performance was taken to the next level with the musical collaboration provided by guest artist and musical superstar MAJOZI (a local Salt Rock lad who has made it on the big stage).

Highlights of the evenings amazing performances included Lethu Zulu’s rousing version of “Asimbonanga”; Robyn Gillespie and Jordan Steward’s heavenly transcendence of “Angels”; Jason Jeffery’s mesmerising version of “Muse”; Ofentse Mafoko and Mandy Mdlongwa’s powerful performance of the OSKIDO re-mix of “Diamonds are Forever”; “Fire” by Majozi and Dylan Fouché set the stage alight; while the full cast comforted the audience with “Heal the World”. Our thanks go to the enthusiastic and supportive audience that merged with these musical performances, student culture leaders Mbalenhle Zuma and Dylan Fouché, Des Govender and the LIV Choir, Rozanne Paragon and the CNC Prep Choir, Nina Watson and the CNC College Choir and performers. They used their creative talents to tap into our cultural heritage and their performances were magnified and transcending.

FEEL GOOD FILE Habits That Damage Your Kidneys AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

L

ETS be honest: No one really cares about kidney health until there’s a problem... In fact, all most of us tend to know about these organs is that they have something to do with urine production... right? ...ew! However, the reality is that our kidneys are SUPER important for our health. Some of their many (other) functions include; filtering our blood, producing hormones, absorbing minerals, eliminating toxins, and neutralizing acids. Bottom line; we need our kidneys! So how about we show them a little bit of love!? Just a minute... Before we go on, I just have to mention that kidney damage can often go unnoticed for years. Did you know that these amazing little organs can still do their job on as little as 20% of their capacity? Its no wonder then that kidney disease is often referred to as the “Silent Disease”... Even more reason to take care of them before it is too late! Not sure how to take care of your kidneys!? First up, here’s a list of 8 common habits that (you may not have realised) put enormous pressure on your kidneys: 1. NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER Your kidneys act like a filter. However, when you don’t drink enough water during the day, toxins and waste materials start to accumulate and can cause severe damage to your body. 2. DELAYING THE URGE We often ignore the call of nature because we’re too busy or want to avoid public bathrooms. The problem is though, that retaining urine on a regular basis increases urine pressure and can lead to kidney failure, kidney stones, and incontinence. Rather listen to your body and go when you need to go! 3. SAY NO TO SUGAR Sugar overconsumption increases urinary protein. And having excess protein in your urine is an early sign that your kidneys are not functioning correctly. 4. TOO MUCH DIETARY SALT Your body needs salt to work properly however, too much may raise blood pressure and put a lot of stress on the kidneys. To be safe, no more than 5 grams of salt should be eaten on a daily basis. 5. NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES Many vitamin and mineral deficiencies can increase the risk of kidney stones or kidney failure. In particular, Vitamin B6 and magnesium are super important to maintain kidney health. 6. TOO MUCH PROTEIN Regular over-consumption of protein

(common in body builders) dramatically increases the metabolic load on your kidneys. This means your kidneys have to work harder than normal which may lead to kidney damage or dysfunction over time. 7. COFFEE CRAZY While many scientific studies are highlighting the numerous health benefits of coffee, the fact remains that caffeine raises blood pressure which puts extra stress on your kidneys. Over time, excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages (such as coffee) can cause major damage to your kidneys. 8. ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION Don’t get me wrong, the occasional glass of wine or beer wont do you any harm however, many of us battle to stop after just one drink. Alcohol (in excess) is actually a toxin in the body that puts a lot of stress on our kidneys and liver.

crete unwanted oxalic acid. Deficiency increases the oxalic acid content of the urine which promotes alkalinity and leads to calcium oxalate stones. Vitamin B6 should always be taken with a B-complex. • Magnesium: A deficiency in magnesium is believed to be the main cause of kidney stones. This is because it leads to an alkaline urine that can result in the formation of calcium phosphate stones. Thus magnesium and B6 are essential nutrients to take if you have kidney problems. • Vitamin E: Assists the kidneys in clearing out cellular debris. • Potassium: Adequate potassium in your diet is as important as restricting sodium (salt) for good kidney health. This is because a potassium deficiency will also cause the urine to be too alkaline which leads to kidney stones.

• Water: I cannot overemphasize the importance of drinking water Sufficient pure water is necessary to help the kidneys filter out debris and toxins. Never ignore the feeling of thirst and satisfy it as soon as possible! Final Points I am adamant that ‘kidney problems’ will never become one of my health issues and it certainly never need become one of yours either. Simply cut the bad habits, eat clean, supplement smart and enjoy an abundant, healthy and kidney-problem free life.

NOW WHAT!?

Adjust any of the above habits you feel you need to. Then, eat a clean, whole food, nutrient-dense diet and take targeted supplements to maintain overall good health and optimal kidney function. Foods in particular that benefits kidney health include; – ASPARAGUS: rich in a substance called asparagin which acts as a gentle stimulant to improve kidney function. Aim to eat asparagus 3 times a week. – BEETROOT JUICE: Beets have a balanced iron and copper content that helps build good blood as well as cleanse the liver and kidneys. – WATERMELON. A wonderful kidney and bladder flusher. – LEMON: Fresh lemon juice in warm pure water, sweetened with a little raw honey, first thing in the morning will keep your liver and kidneys healthy. – PARSLEY: Raw parsley juice is helpful in most kidney and bladder problems. However, never drink alone. Rather mix fresh juiced parsley with some carrot, beet, or any other salad vegetables and drink three times a day. – PINE NUTS: Contain naphtha which has a cleansing effect on the kidneys. – CRANBERRIES: Unsweetened cranberry juice twice a day helps get the urine more acid and provides manganese. TARGETED NUTRIENTS • Herbs such as Golden Seal (blood purifier and kidney tonic), Horseradish (potent herbal diuretic that helps keep the kidneys healthy) Raspberry Leaves & Juniper Berries all promote kidney health. Best taken in combination. • Bitamin B6 (pyridoxine) works with magnesium to help the kidneys ex-

USE PAIN AS A STEPPING STONE NOT A CAMPSITE. LORNA BOWMAN

O

UR spiritual, emotional and physical lives are a continuous cycle of highs and lows. Oh, how we struggle to accept this! We constantly separate everything into pleasure and pain – pleasure good, pain bad and we won’t accept it all as the natural flow. Then it’s off to the doctor and the therapist – give me pleasure, I will pay you – I do not accept pain under any circumstances. Give it a label, give me medicine, tell me it is someone else’s fault, nothing can ever be my fault, I don’t do anything wrong! Oh dear oh dear. When you cannot accept the lows, you don’t truly enjoy the highs because that’s where you think you should be all the time so why should it be anything special? The constant return to the yoga mat reminds one of the possibilities of finding balance in everything. There

will be parts of the class you enjoy and parts you do not. You learn to hang in there with the things that create challenge. I live on the outskirts of Simbithi, golf balls fly over with regularity. The last one smashed my rear car window at 10 o’clock on a beautiful Saturday morning. The staff at Simbithi were noncommittal and took some pictures with the ever present faithful cell phone. Nothing happened and of course they have no intention of doing the decent thing and making sure I do not bear the cost. Sure, I’m as ticked off as all

hell, those golfers knew what had happened, but I’ve decided to get myself a new window and smile at the fact that life isn’t always fair. I’m going to try and squeeze something out of them, damn right, but I’m not going to spend one more second of my precious life being pissed off and full of my own innocence.

As my daughter works and kids are off to school, their loving exuberant little dog comes for daycare. She scratches them up with long nails so I thought I would do a home-style doggy manicure. Of

course she hopped just at the wrong moment and I gave her a brutal slice into the quick which bled profusely. The next morning she bounded in full of joy and greeted me no differently. Oh, how much we can learn from dogs! No grudge, no holding onto bad thoughts, just a joyful approach to another day of fresh experiences and memories and just constantly let it go. Yoga helps this release by opening up the body and the mind. Continual release of negativity makes it impossible for old age to gain a foothold. See afresh at any age, learn the lesson and move forward. Use pain as a stepping stone and not as a campsite. We all love to blame the circumstances but it’s all about how you choose to deal with them. Namaste. 072 885 6376

TUDIES continue to find that hitting the roads improves health and well-being. “The biggest benefits come from vigorous exercise like running,” says JoAnn Manson, M.D., chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Here are the latest reasons to lace up.

KEEP THE BEAT Runners who log a weekly run of 10 miles (or more) are 39 percent less likely to use high blood pressure meds and 34 percent less likely to need cholesterol meds compared with those who don’t go farther than 3 miles. FUNCTION WELL Men who burn at least 3,000 calories per week (equal to about five hours of running) are 83 percent less likely to have severe erectile dysfunction. BUILD BONE Running strengthens bones better than other aerobic activities, say University of Missouri researchers who compared the bone density of runners and cyclists. Sixty-three percent of the cyclists had low density in their spine or hips; only 19 percent of runners did. THINK FAST British workers were surveyed on a day they worked out and a day they didn’t. People said they made fewer mistakes, concentrated better, and were more productive on the day they were active. STAY SHARP A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reported that women

who were active as teenagers were less likely to develop dementia later in life. SLEEP TIGHT Insomniacs fell asleep in 17 minutes on days they ran, compared to 38 minutes on days they didn’t. They also slept for an extra hour on days they exercised. SNEEZE LESS People who exercise for an hour a day are 18 percent less likely to suffer upperrespiratory-tract infections than those who are inactive, according to a study from Sweden. Moderate activity boosts immunity. BREATHE EASY Researchers had asthmatics do two cardio workouts and one strength session a week. After three months, they reported less wheezing and shortness of breath. LIVE LONGER A review of 22 studies found that people who work out 2.5 hours a week are 19 percent less likely to die prematurely than those who don’t exercise. A separate study found that active people have a 50 percent lower risk of premature death.

Colour Me Beautiful BRENDAN BROEDELET -INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY

W

INTER is finally on the retreat along with the strong, sharp-edged colours that are characteristic of the season. Instead, designers are welcoming the fragrant return of spring with a move to the softer side of the colour spectrum, drawing inspiration from the gentle beauty of tropical landscapes and floral art and evoking a sense of well-being and harmony with the natural world. The 2015 Spring palette ranges from glacier grey and bevelled glass through the warmer hues of tangerine, toasted almond, Marsala and strawberry ice to clear, cool aquamarine and scuba blue, conjuring up the tantalising prospect of lazy summer days and creating a visual respite from the fast-paced hustle of our techno-driven lives.

This season’s hair colours complement this pastel parade with pearly, muted shades that seamlessly blend cool tones with their warmer counterparts, fading into each other in a subtle blend of whimsical spring romance and sensual summer spice. In order to create this look successfully, it is necessary to bleach the areas of hair that will receive the pastel toning light enough for the soft pastel tones to take effectively. This can, however, compromise the condition of the hair

so using a preparation such as the new generation cystaic acid prevention treatments is a must. One of the attractive benefits of this type of colouring is tonal swapping; these pastel colours are designed to gradually wash out over time, enabling one to experiment with several shades throughout the season. A word of warning, though: this fashion calls for a pearly, faded appearance so one must allow the colour to fade significantly before re-colouring as regular colour can become saturated. Spring is the season of rebirth so if you are looking for a fresh start, why not start with a fresh look and face the future with all the colours of the wind in your hair? Happy styling!

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPORTSTER – A MOTORCYCLE ICON

T

HE Sportster is America’s first superbike — full stop. Sports cars of the early ‘50s showcased how a lightweight, dynamic chassis could create effortless speed; Harley-Davidson did this for motorcycles with the original Sportster. It was conceived with racing in mind and designed to deliver results on the track as well as the street. That their original recipe has changed very little — and continues to grace showroom floors some 57 years later — is living proof of its importance in the automotive pantheon. In fact, the Harley-Davidson Sportster is the best-selling bike to bear Milwaukee’s celebrated Bar and Shield. How that came to be is an interesting story.

Thanks to its contribution to the allied forces in World War I, HarleyDavidson enjoyed a stranglehold on domestic motorcycle success in the 1920s. H-D’s only real home-grown rival, Indian Motorcycles, was chugging

to be sure, but at a much slower pace. Harley’s WL platform used in the front lines found favour with many a returning soldier and civilian alike, resulting in the rise of “biker” culture as we’ve come to know it today. But riders quickly wanted increasingly lighter, faster and more nimble machines. By the time the Second World War had ended, motorcycling had firmly rooted its presence in American culture — but Harley-Davidson was no longer leading the charge. At around the same time that John and Paul were learning their G chords, a British invasion of an entirely different sort was taking place on American streets. Lightweight, fast and manoeuvrable bikes from the likes of Triumph, Norton and BSA were cropping up everywhere, leaving the Bar and Shield’s current K-series offerings in the dust, literally. So popular were those British marques that 1953’s motorcycle movie classic

The Wild One featured its star, Marlon Brando, and his entire gang astride English twins — with their logos in full view for the first time in movie history. Harley took notice and quickly went to work to reclaim its middleweight crown. Debuting in 1957, the new Sportster XL combined the telescopic front-end and hydraulic rear swing arm suspension of its predecessor, with an all new overhead valve engine. Dubbed the Ironhead, HD’s new motor was freer breathing, higher revving and quicker than anything the company had produced before. The lessons learned in chassis technology from its predecessor meant the new bike could juke and jive, too. More importantly though, it meant that Harley-Davidson could again compete with, and beat, those plucky Brits. With almost sixty years under its chain and belt, one might expect a constant barrage of sweeping changes and innovations to maintain relevance. While the newest line of Sportsters do boast their fair share of technical advances including ABS, Harley’s staid approach to aging has most fostered the bike’s success and appeal. The 45-degree, 40-horsepower Ironhead motor that introduced Harley owners to high-performance overheadvalve V-Twin engines would remain a staple of the XL line-up for some 28 years. Designed using cast-iron cylinder heads to quell the leaking issues associated with the lighter, coolerrunning alloy heads in other engines, the 883cc and 1000cc power plants were a one-piece design, incorporating the transmission directly into the crank case casting. This unit was bolted directly to the frame to create the signature responsive trait of the Sportster. This method would continue until 2004, when Harley decided to soften the inherent vibrations associated with all twin cylinder motors by rubber mounting its power plants. The motor and transmission unit used in the Sportster changed in 1986 with the introduction of the Evolution line. Much like its bigtwin stable mates, the Evo-powered Sporty boasted lighter aluminum cylinders and heads and would eventually feature a 5-speed gearbox and the now-ubiquitous H-D beltdrive (1991). This design also showcases an entirely unique valve train configuration that employs one cam per overhead valve, resulting in four individual, singlelobe, gear-driven camshafts — an attractive engineering consequence of its continued unit construction. Fuel injection was introduced in 2007, after much experimentation to ensure that Harley’s patented signature sound would remain instantly recognizable. Similar to the engines that motivated it, the overall shape of the Sportster has also remained

constant despite countless variations on its theme. Much like the iconic Porsche 911, a Sportster of any ilk can be spotted from well beyond a twentyyard stare. Thanks to its prominent “peanut” gas tank, low-rider stance and outboard rear suspension, the Sportster continues to exude an overall aesthetic that conveys an authentic ride better than most of Milwaukee’s finest.

The Sportster has remained great in spite of some sufferings. A position at the entry level of the H-D catalogue has often earned it the label of a beginner bike, or worse yet, the title of “bitch” bike. That’s wrong. Sure, its low price point and ease of operation makes the Sportster a natural starting point, but it also means that its signature sound

and responsive ride can be had without any of the tortures of bigger bikes. Few motorcycles capture an audience as attentively as those of Harley-Davidson. The Sportster is the most distilled representation of Harley-Davidson’s original DNA, and that’s why it’s an Icon.
