ow much do you love the idea of change? I ask the question in all sincerity because it has become patently obvious to me of late that things are changing here faster than most of us can begin to comprehend. We are not wild about the concept of change – apparently we like things as they are and frequently profess to preferring things as they were. But as sure as night follows day, everything changes and whether we fight the notion of change in our lives or embrace it, it happens! Forgive me now if I take you on a stroll down Intellectual Avenue for a moment – I know this is not that sort of read, but there is some good stuff here. British philosopher and writer Alan Watts who died in 1973, left us with the argument that the root of our human frustration and daily anxiety is our tendency to live for the future, which is an abstraction. If to enjoy even an enjoyable present we must have the assurance of a happy future, we are “crying for the moon”, he said. We have no such assurance. The best predictions are still matters of probability rather than certainty, and to the best of our knowledge every one of us is going to suffer and die. If, then, we cannot live happily without an assured future, we are certainly not adapted to living in a finite world where, despite the best
plans, accidents will happen, and where death comes at the end. What keeps us from happiness, Watts argues, is our inability to fully inhabit the present. To understand music, you must listen to it. But so long as you are thinking, “I am listening to this music,” you are not listening. Okay, let’s get back onto Ballito Boulevard now. According to the media there is plenty to worry about right now – the world is in a mess. There’s trouble at every turn and South Africa is no exception. Again, people are looking to emigrate, looking for greener pastures. And why not? If that’s what you want to do, have a go. If you are uncomfortable here, it is natural to look for comfort elsewhere. But unless you find it within, you probably won’t be happy. The music here continues to play and if you listen to it I think you’ll find it rather charming. Because despite all of the political meddling, greed, corruption and everything else that fans the flames of human unhappiness, there is so much more to cherish and enjoy while we are able to. There are miracles happening all around us. When last did you do something simple that you really enjoy? When last did you stop and marvel at something beautiful? When last did you

tell someone how special they are to you? When last did you do something kind? When last did you feel the power of love? Remember, what keeps us from happiness, is our inability to fully inhabit the present. To understand music, you must listen to it. But so long as you are thinking, “I am listening to this music,” you are not listening. Stop for a moment and listen to the music…it’s amazing!

T is an age-old dilemma, whether to live in the suburbs or in a gated Estate. Ballito is no exception with a huge choice of Estates to choose from.
Closed communities or Estates are a fairly new concept in South Africa becoming popular in the 2000. These Estates offer benefits to their owner that has become more and more in high demand. Currently there are 6.2 million residential properties in South Africa of which gated Estates makes up 5.1%. (About 3 162 000 estate homes)
So, why the big fuss between owning a house in gated estate or a regular suburban house? SAFETY: Most gated Estates offer heightened security by employing the services of Security Companies and guards. Access control and patrolling of the estate will form part of the lifestyle of all of these Estates. Cost for security is normally built into the monthly levies Urban households must take care of their own security. Usually this will be much cheaper than the fees included in estate levies. LIFE STYLE: Most estates offer a quality of life that can no longer be found in suburbia. Eco estates, golf and equestrian estates not only lessens the carbon footprint of households, but allows the residents to enjoy the freedom to pursue their pastimes unhindered. Estates are governed by Management and the Home Owner’s. Comprehensive rules and regulations are well monitored and implemented, securing a sought after lifestyle Urban households often offers larger plot of land than the more expensive smaller stands in estates and here residents may enjoy the same quality of life in their own backyard without stringent rules and regulations. PETS: One of the biggest emotive issues amongst residents living in estates is the restriction on keeping pets. In some estates where pets are allowed they have to abide by strict rules or face hefty fines. Urban homeowners are only controlled by their municipal regulations. ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: In recent times residential estates have prescribed architectural design requirements presenting a pleasing cohesive community development. These architectural designed houses are normally modern, well designed and therefore more desirable. Urban properties in good areas may also offer the opportunity to live in modern architect designed houses. In Ballito there are beautiful properties often offers stunning views of the ocean which in many cases estate properties don’t have.
"HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART IS" VALUE: Lightstone analytics director: PaulRoux de Kock, stated in a recent article that the average property price in South Africa is currently R700.00, whereas the average price of a property in a gated estate is R2 -million, nearly three times the national average. The ten most expensive estates in the country can mostly be found in Johannesburg. Villa Santini in Sandhurst is topping the list with an average house price of R17.4 million.. I was surprised not to find our local Zimbali Coastal Resort amongst the top 10 most expensive estates in RSA. The top 10 estates in size has Simbithi estate coming in at number 10 for the most number of properties in the estate with 625 properties, compared to Midlands Estate with 1201 properties Although properties inside Estates seem to achieve a higher value than an urban property, some of the most valuable properties can be found outside the estates. “Although luxury-market buyers are under pressure, the estatehousing market in general doesn’t dip as low or peak as high as the rest of the luxury property market, expecting it to outperform the luxury market.”- says De Kock of Lightstone. COST OF ESTATE LIVING: Levies are the one un- controllable aspect of estate living. Determined by the Home Owners Association at the annual AGM meetings, all home owners are obliged by law to pay the levies as determined. Living in these desirable lifestyle estates comes at a price not everyone is willing to pay, nor to abide by some of the onerous estate’s rules and regulations. The urban home owner is freed of levies for amenities and services he doesn’t want or need, making it more cost effective to live outside an estate. Estate vs Urban living? As in everything in life there will always be trade-offs. The debate between investing in an Estate or Urban property will continue and there will never be a correct answer, but at Harcourts Dolphin Coast we wish to keep our buyers and sellers informed to help them make an informed choice that suite their needs. We are accredited in all the estates in Ballito and offer buyers and sellers our full and professional service, following the Harcourts values of putting: PEOPLE FIRST. THE PANAMA PAPERS – ARE YOUR ASSETS OKAY?
T
HE Panama papers have dominated world news in which 11,5 million documents were leaked exposing some 214,000 offshore companies and entities. World leaders, business tycoons and political figureheads have been “named and shamed” with the potential of more to come.
This lends immense impetus to National Treasury’s Special Voluntary Disclosure Programme (SVDP). This program aims to draw taxpayers with undisclosed assets and/or income abroad to come forward or face the full might of the law. Although unclear, it is expected that the potential value of investments will run into the billions (2003 amnesty attracted R48-billion).
Notwithstanding the potential “Panama Paper” type leak in our digital (read hackable) age, the pressure is on for those who still have undisclosed assets abroad as a new global standard for the automatic exchange of information between tax authorities becomes operational from 2017. This will provide the South African Revenue Services (Sars) with information previously inaccessible from institutions globally. With the amnesty period scheduled from October 2016 to March 2017, the “slap on the wrist” type penalty (yes, it still hurts) is an attractive proposition. So what to do? Well, first step is to come forward to your Financial Planner, Lawyer or Tax Practitioner and start getting your ducks in a row.

‘IT’S IN OUR DNA’
2016/03/16 12:10 PM
Flick Holmes -
Head Ashton Junior College
I
N the nucleus of every cell there are metres of DNA, which when unravelled and examined, reveal the true nature of the blueprints for things to grow and live. DNA is a molecule that carries most of the genetic instructions used in the development, functioning and reproduction of all known living organisms. This term we have been looking closely at Ashton’s DNA and exploring what it is that sets us apart, and makes us proud to be the school that we are today.
Just one of our strands is the strand of inclusivity which allows us to embrace different styles of learning and those who learn differently, particularly in our Grace Wing. The idea was born, almost two years ago, to build a facility within the Ashlings’ Early Learning Centre, to cater for children on the Autism spectrum. The CEO of Ashton College, Andre Buys and his wife, Germare, whose hearts to help their precious younger son extended beyond their own desires as they embarked on a project which would also serve those families in our community and beyond, needing schooling for their children on the spectrum. And so, in faith, we began the journey! Grace Wing at the Ashlings’ Early Learning Centre was named the Germare and Reinie’s Autism Centre of Excellence and at the start of last year, we opened our doors to our first class of Gracelings, with the intent of preparing
these children to one day, enter mainstream schooling. There are a vast number of ways which a person can manifest their autism and as a result, this condition is now more often referred to as “Autism Spectrum Disorders” known as ASD. At the Grace Wing we accept children on the spectrum between the ages of 3 and 6 years. Our Gracelings ‘carousel’ into the Ashlings’ classrooms as they are able to, and our neurotypical children have a growing acceptance of their special friends who may talk, behave or play differently to the way they do. We are blessed to have full time Speech and Occupational therapists who work alongside the Grace Wing staff, on individual educational and developmental plans. Andre and Germare Buys, in their quest to offer our students the best possible educational programme, visited reputable Autism centres in Australia last year, to undergo some training and to form networking opportunities, and at the start of this year, acquired the professional services of a Behaviourial therapist from America, whilst she was in South Africa, to further train our Grace Wing staff. What an exciting journey on which to be, as we develop Ashton’s DNA!
THE WIZ WAS A HIT – Bravo Ashton!

T
HE Ashton College production of that classic show, The Wizard of Oz was yet again confirmation that the school takes culture as seriously as it takes its sport.
The play is based on an American children's novel written by author L. Frank Baum , originally published by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1900. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the title of the 1902 Broadway musical adaptation that was so successful, it continues to be performed throughout the world today. The story chronicles the adventures of a young farm girl named Dorothy in the magical Land of Oz, after she is swept away from her Kansas home by
a cyclone. It’s of the best-known tel: 032 946 2096 | fax: stories in American literature and has been widely translated. email: admissions@ashto The Ashton College production web: www.ashto of the show was a triumph in every respect and a tribute to all who worked so hard to bring it to fruition. The hours of extra mural dedication from both staff and students paid dividends as praise for the production has come in from every quarter. While every performer gave performances they can be proud of, Sabrina Loubser’s portrayal of Dorothy was truly outstanding. Her performance was, in every respect, a tour de force that took the production to another level. If this is an indication of the calibre of productions Ashton College aspires to, the future for those who love culture and performance at the school, is looking fabulous!

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR CHILDHOOD SICKNESSES STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
B
EFORE we get started, let me put your mind at ease. If it seems like your child is ALWAYS sick, please don't despair. This is totally normal. In fact, kids are DESIGNED to get sick! It's how the immune system grows and develops.
It is also necessary to mention that the goal of natural remedies is not to stop the symptoms. But rather to reduce their severity (so the child can cope), whilst supporting and facilitating the immune system to do its job properly i.e. fight the illness and restore health! Just have a little patience, allow the healing process to run its course and enjoy the special bond that develops between parent and child when they're feeling weak and vulnerable. NOW ON TO THE NATURAL REMEDIES... EAR INFECTIONS Childhood ear infections are intimately connected to diet. Start by eliminating dairy (often the main culprit), gluten, sugar and processed foods from your child's diet (and your diet too if you are still breastfeeding) and focus on REAL whole foods such as plenty of vegetables, a little bit of fruit (not fruit juice), broths, fermented foods, raw nuts and seeds, organic meats, eggs and wild caught fish. Supplement with age appropriate doses of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, probiotics and A.Vogel Echinaforce as well as Homeopathic remedies for infection, pain and immunity. Ear candling can provide enormous relief (if your child will agree to it!) as the warm smoke dries out any trapped moisture. Drops of warm oil (coconut oil or olive oil) in the ear also helps as well as gargling with raw apple cider vinegar (again, only if your child will agree to this!). Another useful remedy is to apply an onion compress to the infected ear for a few hours or overnight if possible. Simply cut a round slice of fresh onion, wrap in gauze or cheesecloth and secure to the child's head with a headband or bandage. FEVERS If your child has a fever, please do not panic. A fever is the body's way of destroying the virus or bacteria causing your child's distress. If you try to bring it down unnecessarily you will only prolong the illness, depress the immune system and open your child up to a secondary infection... A domino effect that often ends with antibiotic use. Bottom line: If you want to avoid antibiotics, don't bring down the fever! Only if your child's fever goes over 40 degrees should you intervene. Note that food will naturally drop a fever within 20 minutes or so for an hour or two at a time however, only feed a child if they are willing to eat (and even then just a few bites of scrambled egg or sips of broth is all that's needed). Fevers naturally deplete Vitamin A so dose with a couple of drops of good quality Cod Liver Oil. Sometimes a fever can last 3 days and will go up and down. It usually peaks between 4-6pm in the afternoon so until you've passed a late afternoon with no fever, rather keep your child at home. Finally all your child will want
is you when they're feverish, so simply holding them as long as possible offers huge comfort! COUGHS & COLDS The first step is to support their immune system with the supplements mentioned for ear infections in age appropriate doses (Vit C, Vit D, Echinaforce, probiotics and specific homeopathic remedies). Don't worry about food if they've lost their appetite but make sure to keep up their fluid intake with breast milk (if they're still nursing), mineral water, broth, homemade soups, coconut water, kombucha and black herbal teas with lemon and raw honey (do not give raw honey to children under 12 months). Next, position your child's face over a herbal steam bath allowing them to inhale the steam. Add anti-bacterial, decongestant and expectorant essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, rosemary, tea tree or eucalyptus. You can do this several times a day. For a stuffy nose the best natural treatment is Kids X-Clear – a xylitol based nasal spray for children. A natural chest rub also works wonders for congestion particularly if it contains peppermint or eucalyptus. Nursing moms can even rub a small amount onto the breast (well away from where it could get into baby's eyes or mouth, or onto their hands) to ease breathing during feeding time. Maintain the moisture in the house with a humidifier and again don’t underestimate the healing power of touch! If your child is home sick, drop what you're doing and simply hold them, rub their back, rock them, read to them, sing to them, and lie down and take a nap with them. SORE STOMACH Slippery elm tincture is one of the best natural remedies for tummy trouble. Simply give a few drops in a little water to ease a stomach ache, bloating or gas. A change in diet is also highly recommended. In particular, avoid all forms of sugar, sugar alternatives (besides erythritol or stevia) and especially fructose! Fructose intolerance is common in children of all ages with recurrent (and often unexplained) abdominal pain. Herbal teas such as ginger, peppermint, fennel or chamomile can ease tummy trouble as well as apple cider vinegar (a few drops taken in water) or aloe vera juice. DIARRHOEA Home-made bone broth does wonders for diarrhoea as the gelatin binds up the liquid in the colon and provides bulk. Only give a few tablespoons at a time but do so frequently throughout the day. Make sure to keep your child well hydrated with sips of liquid such as water (add a pinch of Himalayan salt for the electrolytes), coconut water, herbal teas sweetened with honey or breastmilk if the child is still nursing. Consult your doctor if there is blood in the stool or if your child becomes dehydrated. Homeopathic remedies for diarrhoea may also be beneficial. HEADACHES Once again diet plays a big role if your child suffers with headaches. Avoid sugar and MSG – both will cause headaches. Low blood sugar could also be the cause so make sure
they're getting 3 balanced meals a day with adequate protein and plenty of healthy fats. Dehydration could be another cause. Coconut water or kombucha is the best way to rehydrate, even more so than plain water. However, if your child will only drink water, let them have ½ a glass every half hour to avoid putting strain on the kidneys. Again, homeopathic remedies for headaches offer huge relief, as well as aromatherapy oils. Mix two drops of rosemary oil with two drops of peppermint oil and one teaspoon of coconut oil, and rub it into the temples, forehead and back of neck to relieve headache pain. THRUSH Is an over-growth of a yeast-like fungus called Candida albicans. It presents as white “cottage cheeselike” lumps on the inside of the lips, cheeks and/or on the tongue. Although less common, vaginal thrush in little girls can also be present if proper hygiene care is not practised. Probiotics are essential to regulate and control Candida in the body. If breastfeeding, mothers should eliminate all sugar, carbs, grains and gluten from the diet, supplement with a high dose, high quality probiotics and eat plenty of probiotic rich foods such as sauerkraut, kefir and yoghurt. Toddlers and older children should do the same. Coconut oil, rich in caprylic
acid, is a potent anti-fungal food that is also highly recommended for the breastfeeding mother or affected child to consume. It is even safe for babies (make sure it is pure, organic, extra virgin coconut oil). Apply to nipples, in the baby or child's mouth or to the vagina (once it has been cleaned and dried thoroughly). IN SUMMARY... When your child gets sick, don't panic. If their diet is typically healthy and their immunity is strong you have nothing to worry about. Allow your kids to fight the illness and recover naturally without unnecessary medical intervention. Natural remedies together with plenty of love will help them weather the challenge and set them up for success, due to the fact that their immune systems will end up infinitely stronger as adults! BEST OF LUCK for the COMRADES MARATHON…
COMRADES CALLING... It’s Comrades season again and the big race day is almost upon us! In the lead up to this year’s Comrades Marathon, Life & Style chatted to running fundi Dave Flood (owner of the SportsZone Running Co in Ballito and SportsZone Durban North) for his take on the iconic race…
BALLITO LIFESTYLE CENTRE, TOPS & SUPERSPAR wish all those running the Comrades Marathon the very best of luck and we hope you have a wonderful race.
Dave & Candice Flood Life & Style: Dave, as a veteran runner with 17 Comrades Marathons under your belt, can you explain just what makes this such an iconic and important race? Dave Flood: The Comrades Marathon really is special. It’s the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon and it’s not for everyone. It’s called “The Ultimate Human Race” for a reason - just to make it to the starting line on Comrades day is a huge achievement and represents a mindboggling amount of dedication and discipline: from early mornings out on the road to the family and social events missed because of training… L&S: How much training does the average Comrades runner put in to make it to race day? DF: Most will have put in 850km to 1000km of training since January. The top runners will have covered close to 2000km in the 5 months leading up to Comrades. L&S: Do you think the new Comrades Marathon motto Izokuthoba [It Will Humble You] accurately describes the race? DF: It WILL humble you… After the 65km mark, it takes a special breed of runner to keep moving. L&S: This year the race is a Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. How does it compare to the reverse Up Run in your opinion? DF: “Down” always sounds easier. It’s not really the case physically, but I actually prefer the Down Run. The second half of the race is really where the big down-hills come in, and although they’re harder on the body, I find that mentally it helps to think that you’re heading down-hill to the finish.
L&S: Can you describe the atmosphere on the road as a runner on race day? DF: It’s hugely emotional… To run as one of those 20 000 people, you really feel part of something bigger than yourself and rely on the spirit of the race – the Comradery of the runners around you – to pull you through. During the first half of the race, people are sharing stories and jokes to keep spirits high, and during the second half there is solidarity in their silence. L&S: Your daughter, Candice, is running her first Comrades Marathon this year. How has her training compared to the way you trained for your first Comrades? DF: I’ve been very proud of the discipline my daughter has put in to her training this year. Discipline has always been an essential part of Comrades training. Nowadays, the focus is largely on being disciplined in covering enough distance each week, but when I did my first Comrades in 1978, the focus was very much on improving your time. Speed-work and time trials were very important. And we drank more beer… It was practically our recovery drink back then! L&S: Do you have any words of wisdom for first-time Comrades runners this year? DF: Go out there and enjoy it. If you’ve put in the training, try to push any worries or anxieties aside on race day. Soak up every moment of the experience and don’t push too hard in the first half of the race: if you’re feeling strong in the second half, then you can really go for it. You’ll never have another “first Comrades”, so make the best of it. You’ll remember it for life.

LEARNING TO LOVE YOUR HAIR BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY
W
someone with straighter, wavier or curlier hair wishing they could have hair like yours. Celebrate your natural hair texture and play to its strengths. If you have wavy hair, learn to love the fact that you can wake up and have the beachy, festival hair that some spend ages trying to recreate. With straight hair you can go for edgier cuts, like shags or bobs that no one with curly hair could ever attempt. And when those with natural curls shun the hard products, hot tools and bondage techniques – ultimately sucking the moisture and nutrients from their hair – they are left with a mane that has the fun, drama and volume that those with poker-straight hair can only dream of.
HEN you look in the mirror at your hair do you only see flaws? Do you ever wish your natural hair type and texture was different? Let’s be honest, you’ve probably said – or thought – at least once before: “If only my boring [insert natural hair type here] hair was [insert opposite hair type here]!”
Again and again I see clients struggling to embrace their natural hair texture – developing a grass-is-always-greener complex about their locks. People with fine hair wishing their hair had more volume, while those with thick hair are convinced their lives would be easier with less. Same goes for naturally straight versus naturally curly. As a result I see clients spending fortunes trying to alter their natural hair type with hot tools, extensions, chemicals and products – often leaving them with hair that’s a pain to maintain or, when not used properly, severely damaged. It’s about time you learn to love the hair you have: step away from the blow-dryer, flat iron or curling wand and embrace your hair in all its natural glory! I’m going to deal with two of the most common complaints:
Texture
Thickness
Here again it’s a case of clients wanting what they can’t have and overlooking the benefits of their natural hair. Ladies with fine hair seem to view it as being limp or lifeless. They look at those with thick hair and try to recreate that volume by adding curls or waves – that are often gone in couple of hours – and after a while this will only damage their already thin strands. The ladies with thick hair see those will silky, fine hair as incredibly lucky and dream of a day when blow drying their hair will only take few minutes.
I hear this all the time – clients with straight hair dream of wavy or curly tresses while those with waves wish for dead straight locks. Take this to heart: whatever your hair texture, there is always
The trick to making the most out of your hair type comes down to having the right cut. Those with finer hair can get away with shorter styles, and lobs and bobs are great cuts for building fullness into the hair. While those with thicker
hair can enjoy longer cuts without worrying about a lack of volume, and their hairdresser can use techniques, like layers, undercutting and texturising, to sculpt their hair into their desired style. Learning to love your hair and making the most of what you have is the real route to hair happiness.

Married in Style
Rebekah and Allan Clark got engaged in Ballito six months ago and are planning to emigrate soon to Canada. They wanted a totally different wedding, and because they loved their engagement pics so much, they flew Photographer Barry Bowditch and his team from Ballito to Pretoria to capture a turn of the century feel magical wedding in an historic chapel there. We think they did a super job and the happy couple will take some lovely memories of home with them as they start a new life in Canada. We wish them happiness and love, always.

REN’T you fascinated with your dreams? I have a Native American Dream Catcher, a spider’s web of woven chamois leather and feathers suspended above my bed. The Sioux Indians used it to capture the good dreams of life. In spite of it I seem to have some pretty brutal dreams.
My life is calm and problem free and I’m sure those dreams are sent to remind me not to be complacent – the yoga theory of the Yin and the Yang, the process of change and how it can be affected by time. Dreams reflect how we behave towards others, our environment, our state of mind, and our personalities. The knock at the door tells the character of the visitor! Inquiry into dreams and sleep and our experiences during or around these states can help to clarify some of our problems. How refreshing it is after a good nights sleep! How disturbing a bad dream can be! Thank goodness for that time when our fragmented thinking finally quiets down. We are so desperate to control or compartmentalise everything! Our minds in a perpetual state of restlessness. Sleep is the time when we move away from the selfish little “I”, what a relief if we could do it a bit in wakeful life. Dreams show us there is much going on that we cannot control – just slip into the acceptance of it is what it is. Our minds are distracted by the continual desire not to be at fault in any way – so what if you are, apologise if necessary, get clear and move on. If someone cannot forgive and forget
some small indiscretion, don’t bother with them – not one of us is perfect. The enormous concentration required to do a good yoga class has the added benefit of taking you away from all the petty little irritations. Adding breath to the experience requires even more concentration. If you are doing a cutesy yoga hour of one posture followed by another with very little thought involved and thinking about all sorts of other things at the same time – it’s not yoga. STOP – train your mind to be still – it will be the start of a totally different more rewarding practice. Regularity will establish the understanding of what you are trying to do, bring you good sleep and the breadth of thinking to help you better understand about what you dream and why you do what you do. Yoga is the most scientific and intelligent path to the improvement of human life and health. Accelerate the progress instead of wasting life in the bye-lanes of sense-pleasure heading toward pain, death and disappointment. Is there a dream in there that’s heading you towards this wonderful method of improving your existence and the great gift of time you have been allotted to spend on this exquisite planet? Start by straightening your back and feel the years roll away. You’re either on the slippery slope downhill or on your way to the peace that passes all understanding. “Yoga welcomes you to test it’s doctrines in your own inner laboratory and taste the delicious fruits if offers”. Indra Devi. Namaste. 072 885 6376
DO UNTO OTHERS… ROD BRIGGS
I
T is a common flaw of humanity that we fail to realise that we are not alone on our journey through life; due to our entrainment as children and our societal norms we predominantly see ourselves as individuals.
Although we all profess the Christian principles of Brotherhood and Universal Love we don’t really mean it, in fact we often don’t mean it at all! Think for a moment (don’t worry we don’t have to let anyone else see our dark side) of how often we actually act as if we are all one. Very few of us actually “love our neighbour as ourselves” which, technically means that there are very few, if any, Christians out there. It’s easy to excuse ourselves by arguing that this ideal is aspirational but how many of us even aspire to treating everyone the same as ourselves? Philosophical questions aside there are other negative spin offs of this aspect of our psyches that are much closer to home. How many of us, I wonder, have ever asked ourselves the following question, and honestly answered it: “How does my behaviour impact on the health of those around me?” Nagging wives, churlish husbands, bullying teachers, sycophantic salesmen or pressuring peers, we are all hugely affected by those around us. When we think of this simple truth in relation to our lives it gives us a hint as to the impact that we have on others as well. Before your next human interface pause and ask yourself “how would I like to be treated in this situation?” and adjust your interaction accordingly. Afterwards you will notice that the event felt different to prior to the exercise. Once you have done it once, repeat it, again and again until it becomes a habit. You will have dropped a pebble in the pond of life whose ripples will spread further than your imagination. Namaste

Harry loves the "amazing" song Sia has written for Blondie's new album. The band are currently working on their new as yet untitled record, the follow-up to 2014 release Ghosts of Download. And as she spoke to Blondie cofounder Chris Stein on her Beats 1 show The Candy Shop, which broadcasts on Friday night (06May16), singer Charli XCX revealed some long awaited details about the record. On top of her own hugely successful music career, Sia has been responsible for writing some of the pop music's biggest hits in recent years, such as Rihanna's Diamonds and Beyonce's Pretty Hurts. Debbie also had another wish for the record, as Chris said she would "love to have Ludacris" feature on the album. But it seems she might have to wait for the group's next offering because the songs on this one are finished.
romance centre stage on Monday night as they performed Go Ahead and Break My Heart. The couple admitted they had been feeling nervous about debuting the song on The Voice - the U.S. talent show where they met and fell in love late last year. But there was no sign of any nerves as the pair took to the stage for the emotional rendition, with just their love for one another shining through. Blake, who looked smart and stylish in a black and white suit, kicked things off as he started singing by himself, before Gwen emerged from the wings in a stunning sheer dress with floral embroidery. As they belted out the lyrics to the song, Gwen and Blake were seen gazing deep into each other's eyes, clearly feeling the emotion of the moment. When the song drew to a close, the couple got a standing ovation from the audience and their fellow judges on the panel, and were seen embracing as they celebrated a successful performance.
•The Rolling Stones have
asked presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to stop playing their songs at his campaign events. In a statement on Wednesday, the rock band said they have not given permission to the Trump campaign to use their songs and "have requested that they cease all use immediately". Adele and Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler both asked the candidate to stop using their recorded songs to fire up crowds. Neil Young also objected when the real estate mogul used Rockin' in the Free World during his campaign kickoff announcement last year. In those cases, the Trump campaign stopped using the songs.
•Ozzy And Sharon Osbourne Have
Reportedly Split After 33 Years Of Marriage The heavy metal couple is calling it quits. After more than 33 years of marriage, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have reportedly split. The 67-year-old Black Sabbath rocker and the 63-year-old television host mutually agreed to call it quits, according to E! News. Ozzy has moved out of the family’s
home temporarily, E! News first reported. Apparently, their decision to split had nothing to do with the singer’s heavily reported addiction issues, TMZ later confirmed. n Sharon, Ozzy and their children, except the eldest, Aimee, appeared on the popular MTV reality show “The Osbournes” from 2002 to 2005. Throughout their marriage, Ozzy struggled to cope with a decadeslong drug and alcohol addiction. Divorce rumors swirled in 2013, after he admitted to relapsing, leading the rocker to pen a heartfelt apology to “the people I love most, my family.” Sharon stood by his side through it all, telling Vanity Fair in 2011 that “we’ve always been in it for the long haul.”

PEUGEOT 208 – VALUE AND STYLE
P
EUGEOT SOUTH AFRICA recently launched a thoroughly updated version of its popular 208 subcompact hatchback.
The new line-up consists of three derivatives, three engine choices, two transmissions and two trim levels.
MORE THAN JUST A FACELIFT Peugeot Citroen South Africa managing director Francis Harnie said: “The 208 has been a stalwart performer in the Peugeot stable, both here and abroad. However, with demand for more compact, but also more sophisticated cars continuing to grow, it was time to update the current model. "All 208 models are now powered by Euro6compliant engines featuring our award-winning PureTech technology, which deliver ample zip and impressive economy. "The advanced auto gearbox offered in the new GT Line model sets new benchmarks for efficiency and shift speed. The exterior and interior updates add lustre to an already popular package.” STANDARD KIT While the GT Line is the flagship of the new 208 range, all four variants benefit from a comprehensive
standard execution. ENTRY-LEVEL MODEL: halogen headlights with daytime running lights and a follow-me-home function, LED three-claw tail lights, and 15" wheels with full wheel covers. Inside, the i-Cockpit is equipped with an MP3compatible CD receiver with multiple speakers, trip computer, electric power steering, aircon, electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, and a refrigerated glove compartment. 208 ACTIVE: Alloy wheels, colour-coded door handles and mirrors. Halogen headlights are exchanged for two-tone halogen headlights with an elliptic mode and LED daytime running lights, while front fog lights are included. The GT LINE has the full house of trim with added cornering function for the fog lights. The interior gets half-leather upholstery and a leathertrimmed steering wheel.
Also standard on the GT Line are an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, auto-activating headlights and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. Manual aircon makes way for an automatic bi-zone climate control system. Vehicles come standard with a three-year or 100 000km warranty. Active and GT Line models also benefit from a five-year or 60 000km Premium Plan (Full Maintenance Plan).
BEYRICK WINS WSL VANS SURF PRO CLASSIC IN EPIC WAVES AT LAMBERTS BAY
B
EYRICK DE VRIES (uMhlanga) clinched the men’s titles at the Vans Surf Pro Classic which was completed in epic 1.0 to 1.3 metre waves and ideal conditions at YoYo’s in Lamberts Bay on Sunday.
The first World Surf league (WSL) event to be run north of Cape Town on the West coast of South Arica, the Vans Surf Pro Classic showcased the country’s best men and junior surfers as they chased a total prize-purse of R50 000 and invaluable points on the Qualifying Series and WSL Africa regional rankings. The Final of the QS1,000 rated men’s event saw Beyrick De Vries (uMhlanga) and Michael February (Kommetjie) go head to head in a spectacular high-flying air show. With a light crosswind blowing perfectly into the rights, both surfers punted manoeuvres above the lip on virtually every ride and each ended up counting a pair of eight-point scores. It was de Vries’ rides that impressed the judges more though, and he earned his first QS event title along with R12 000 in prize-money and 1,000 points
when his 8.67 and 8.47 left him a slim 0.40 of a point ahead of February’s 8.23 and 8.07. Beyrick’s points haul moved him into the top 100 on the International QS ranking, and to first place in the Africa QS ranking after just two events this year. “Thanks to the locals for letting us use their waves and especially to Vans for bringing a QS event to a spot where the waves are so good,” said de Vries on the podium before going on to thank his sponsors and family for their fantastic support. ”Thank you to everyone who came, you looked left or right and everybody was smiling. Big ups!” The Vans Surf Pro Classic has set the bar for performance surfing in South Africa and YoYo’s has established an instant reputation as one of the best contest sites in the country, being likened to the famous Lower Trestles in California by many of the competitors Results, images and video footage of the Vans Surf Pro Classic can be found on www.worldsurfleague.com.

Many people find the work-fromhome opportunity the perfect fit for their lifestyle. But working from home is hard work, especially with kids in the picture. Whether you're contemplating a work-from-home opportunity or already heading to your in-house office each day, here are some tips to help make the business adventure a success. 1. Get everyone in the house on board Without family support, your at-home business won't survive. 2. Create an office or work space Even if you can do your job sitting on the couch with laptop in hand, creating work space is important. 3. Establish a schedule — but work when you can Establish a base schedule: A set chunk of hours, certain days of the week, etc. where you perform the bulk of your duties. This is especially important if you have clients working traditional business hours at an office. 4. Take breaks Just because you're already home doesn't mean you don't deserve a break. Take a mid-morning and mid-afternoon break, long enough to stretch your muscles, do some breathing exercises, or make a quick personal call. 5. Don't do laundry during office hours It's so tempting to fold those clothes
or unload that dishwasher, but you couldn't do any of that if you were at an office building. 6. Utilise pre-school, child care, or sitters Ah, the joys of taking business calls with a tired toddler at your feet! Don't confuse working from home with being at home. If your budget permits, consider preschool, child care, or other options during daytime hours. 7. Establish connections within the profession Join a professional association, attend conferences and seminars, and participate in online forum discussions. Networking and staying in tune with current topics within your industry are critical for your professional development. 8. Get out of the office Remember the idea of taking a break that was mentioned earlier? Make one break long enough to allow you time out of the house. Meet a friend for lunch, go to the gym, walk the dog. Yes, it's your office, but it's also your home. You'll burn out and go stir crazy if you don't find a change of scenery. Working from home is a great alternative for many women wanting to balance their personal and professional life, as long as family support and the right mindset and tools are in place.
