ave you checked your insurance lately? You may be in for a surprise if your experience is anything like mine. Nobody likes paying for insurance – it’s money down the drain unless you happen to have a mishap and then you pray that there is no small print clause to derail your claim. People in the know have revealed that, with some insurers, their first response to a claim is “How can we repudiate?” rather than “How can we pay?” Insurance companies do all sorts of interesting things – like impose 30% rejection targets, and offer their staff bonuses for rejected claims. One trick that’s apparently popular in vehicle insurance is to reject claims where, at the time of the accident, the vehicle was being driven by someone other than the designated “regular” driver – somehow concluding that the client must have lied about who the regular driver would be when they took out the insurance. But I digress. After paying a hefty annual premium of R11961.41 to Outsurance for building cover recently, I decided to shop around and to my amazement discovered that I could get the identical cover from First for Women for R4 692. This prompted a call to Outsurance to query the difference. They didn’t appear at all nonplussed that I could get the identical cover for a fraction of what they were charging, but they did offer

A Day in the Life of an
Estate Agent. Ida Du Plooy Harcourts Dolphin Coast

n recent times the Real Estate industry has dramatically changed its image from: ‘fly-bynight’ operators to career orientated real estate practitioners; all due to the Estate Agency Affairs Board clamping down on the whole industry. It is now compulsory to have a post matric qualification level NQF4 to be an agent. Since its implementation of compulsory agents qualifications, the local real estate industry has drastically reduced in agent numbers and has been dramatically cleaned up. Today a career as a realtor offers favourable

options as a long term business opportunity for young and old with a passion for people and property. As this is a multi-discipline industry the estate agent of today needs to acquire multiple skills and knowledge in disciplines such as legal, financial, marketing and technology. Apart from all of these required skills and knowledge, the modern day agent will find him/ herself in the midst of an ever changing competitive environment. This is a daunting and complex industry where financial rewards only happen on the successful completion of a property sale, but with unlimited income potential. Let me take you on a journey in the day of an Estate Agent …… 1. Canvassing for new listings. Every agent knows that a correctly priced listing is crucial. To secure the next mandate the agent will have to present a marketing plan to the prospective seller which normally also include a free valuation of his property. A comparative market analysis comparing recently sold and current competition, will assist the agent and the seller to arrive at a fair marketing price. 2. When successfully securing a new listing, the agent will proceed to list the property. This normally entails taking photos and finding out all the relevant details of the property and the seller. The property will then be included in the current stock listing of the business. 3. Once the property has been captured the actual marketing of the property begins. In almost all instances the internet will be used. Show house days, flyers and other marketing media may also form part of the marketing which the agent will have to create. 4. Potential buyers will be introduced to the property which will hopefully lead to … 5. An offer to purchase, after which ……. 6. commission payment. During all of this the agent should remain professional and compassionate never relaxing in their efforts to secure the next listing. So there you have it ….. a day in an estate agent’s life. Daunting, if you are on your own, but with the international and reputable franchise of Harcourts’ support, the rewards are great. We are looking to increase the size of our winning and successful team. We are recruiting new and existing agents. As an intern agent, no real estate experience is required. Marketing in Education Jeannie Habig –
Jeannie Habig - Marketing Manager Ashton College

arketing a school can be a daunting task in an extremely competitive environment. The most excellent marketing initiative is worthless if the school fails to measure up to the expectations created in the marketplace. At Ashton College Ballito, we have seen phenomenal growth from 456 students in 2010 to 1017 students in 2014 which indicates that we are indeed delivering on our promise to produce educated, confident, balanced and happy students who are ready to go on to achieve whatever they want to in life. In the competitive nature of independent education, it has become important to create a product that exceeds expectations because satisfied customers are your best source of referral. At Ashton we have managed to put together a winning recipe with a
successful sports package and a variety of cultural activities. Scores speak for themselves and here it has been word of mouth that has played the biggest role in creating the awareness due to the success of the activities. The main ingredient on top of the list, however, is always Academics. The academic hat trick achieved this year recording 100% pass rate in the challenging IEB (Independent Education Board) and CIE (Cambridge International Examination) as well as the Junior College Primary Checkpoint examinations, is testimony to the fact that we continually strive to define our school as an institution of academic excellence. In our five year advertising/marketing plan we have incorporated and shared our successes and we have kept our logo and message consistent. We have introduced social media elements, attractive websites and brochures to share our recipe, to ensure that we
put out a fair and accurate impression of our school. Needless to say, many of these have been copied, but we are proud to be leading the way and that Ashton has a winning recipe for success. Our ingredients include old-fashioned values and discipline, a Christian ethos, affordable school fees, a variety of sport and cultural activities, mixed with love, a no bully policy, and two of the choice of following either the challenging Independent Education Board Examinations or the Cambridge International Examinations. As our 2014 matric student and IGCSE and A level students prepare to write their trial examinations in three weeks’ time, we are confident that they now have what it takes to make us proud – and that is the best marketing a school can produce.

Sri Lankan Vegetable Curry Powder
Beetroot Curry
This was the first Beetroot Curry I tasted in Sri Lanka during my visit in the early 90’s. A memorable dish, served with Devilled Beef, rice and sambals. Our driver stopped for us to have lunch at a road side shack - literally some corrugated iron sheets nailed together on the edge of a rice paddy field. It must have been 40 C inside that shack. I remember sitting around a small table, with the proverbial plastic tablecloth, eating curry with our hands, Sri Lankan style. I love this dish so much I always have a large container of the curry in my fridge. It tastes amazing as a cold salad and will last well, covered for up to two weeks. Double up if you need to. It is worth noting, that you can curry almost any vegetable using the same recipe. Other suggestions, include, breadfruit, Jackfruit, sweet potato, Snake beans, Green Beans, Okra, pumpkin, Carrot and Green beans, try them all. Tip: Take note, some recipes call for coconut cream and others for coconut milk. Do not substitute. Ingredients 25ml oil 1 Large red onion, diced 4 cloves of Garlic, crushed 20 curry leaves 3ml Turmeric 2 Large fresh Green chillies, sliced into thin strips 3ml black pepper 15ml Vegetable curry Powder (see recipe) 2ml salt 5ml mustard seeds, crushed or grinded 5ml crushed dried chilli 6 raw medium Beetroot, cut into julienne strips 250ml coconut cream, not coconut milk
In Sri Lanka they curry almost everything, I have sampled some amazing Curries made from Fruits and vegetables one would never even consider combining with curry. Try this curry powder recipe with Pineapple, Tomato, Okra, Snake Beans, Green Beans, Egg-Plant, Mango, Plantation, Yams, Cucumber or anything else that takes your fancy. Serve it with fluffy white rice and chilli coconut sambal and a poppadum. This Vegetable curry powder, otherwise known as un-roasted curry powder, has the distinctive addition of turmeric to the mixture, it is mainly used for Vegetables and eggs, whereas they use a darker roasted curry powder for meat. Stir in the Pepper, curry powder salt, mustard seeds, crushed chilli and Beetroot. Cook for 5 minutes or until the spices have cooked and coated the beetroot. Stir in the coconut cream. Growing up on a farm and having a mom who instilled good eating habits into us at a young age, I developed an interest in this field and have a passion to see people restored to health through good food, regular exercise and emotional and spiritual well-being. How do you deal with fear, uncertainty and doubt?
What would you like to happen in SA in the next 5 years?
As clichéd as it sounds, "a country free of poverty, crime and corruption". We have such an awesome country, but it could be even better!

I’m content to live in South Africa, I love Ballito especially but I would definitely travel more if there were unlimited funds!
What are your goals for the next five years?
My goal in my business has always been to bring hope to people and to help restore them to better health. What values would you like your children to embrace?
To treat people with respect and to uphold the values of integrity and honesty in all they do.
6. How do you deal with fear, uncertainty and doubt?
My faith helps to anchor me in those circumstances
Do you have a faith or religious belief?
Yes, I am a Christian.
Do you support any charity?
Yes, we support Hearts That Hope, an NGO which focuses on reaching those in Ballito and surrounding areas who are impoverished, sick and those who cannot help themselves. Through our church we are also part of a missions and justice program which supports Christian organisations locally and globally and which tries to use every resource available to alleviate suffering and address the injustice of poverty. What do you think of local politics and politicians?
I do believe there is huge room for improvement and would love to see them
Honestly. I would not change a thing in my life. I am living my dream and I thank God daily for His abundant blessings. Lying in bed, looking out over a lush golf course, dense forest and glistening ocean is what I wake up to everyday...it doesn't get any better than that! What are your goals for the next five years?
Wow, a tough one as I have so many things I would love to accomplish. I have to say that my priority would be to fine-tune my spiritual life, next would be to take my business ambitions to a new level so... watch this space! My 14 year old daughter, who shares her dad's wonderful nature, and I have been mulling over several ideas to start our own charity focusing on disadvantaged schools in the area. We've looked at frightening statistics which prove that almost 60% of these children go to school on an empty tummy. We have to do our bit within this year, not five. What would you like to see happen is South Africa over the next five Years?
Education, education, education! It is the ONLY way to resolve the scourge of crime, poverty, lack of employment and moral decay which is debilitating our beautiful country. A springclean of South Africa's leadership would fasttrack that, without a doubt. What values would you like your children to embrace?
I want my children to embrace humility. I have witnessed, sadly, that affluence and arrogance almost go hand in hand with many youngsters
today. We try to instill a sound Christian value system in our 14 year old daughter and 21 year old son. I run a conservative home and am glad to see that our children have learnt that our possessions and lifestyle never define our character. How do you deal with fear, uncertainty and doubt?
Easy! I go to my handbook on how to do life my Bible. Do you have a faith or religious belief?
...I guess you've figured this one out already - I am a girl after Christ's own heart! 8.Do you support any charity?
We support several at the moment. We have also assisted Kwamama, LIV Village and Siyazama. In actual fact, my husband has been a supporter of the World Food Programme for almost 25 years.

Pam Jacob – Driefontein Garden Centre
Arthur and I have lived on the Dolphin Coast since 1st January, 1971, when Arthur took a position with the late Willie Hulett on Redwoods Estate where we lived for 25 years. My interest in gardening started when I was married, 49 years ago and has not waned since. This led to a passion for propagating plants. The Nursery was first registered in 1979 and has gone from strength to strength, ever since. We are blessed with wonderful staff members who share my passion, which has also been passed on to my son, Bradley, who owns Driefontein Landscaping. My daughter, Mandy, assists Bradley and I have co-opted my other son, Russell, into helping me with bookwork, so the whole family is involved in the plant business, one way or another. I can’t imagine life not being surrounded with beautiful plants, which can be found in abundance at Driefontein Garden Centre.

Judy Nieuwenhuizen Zenju day spa - Prestige Baby & Kidz Academy I have a wonderful husband Bennie and two amazing children Bradley (7yrs) and Kylie (6yrs) who are my everything. The children and I live in Ballito and due to business my husband commutes to Johannesburg. I am hard working, independent and very ambitious. I love the challenges and all aspects of business and love coming up with new ideas, having creative and positive people around me and seeing the rewards growth and success of something that you have worked so hard on. I believe in always following your dreams and finding out what makes you passionate and happy in life and following this. I started the first branch of Prestige Baby & Kidz Academy in 2009 when I found a lack of good exclusive quality nursery schools available and have since filled a niche in the market place. I have worked on setting up a franchise business model to grow
and expand the Prestige brand and now have 4 branches with more opening in 2015. I founded and started Zenju Day Spa in 2011when I was up for another business venture and challenge and together with my business experience, having a good business model and plan in place and having a great team of managers and therapists, we have grown significantly over the last three years.
Despite being a ‘motivational book junkie’ I mostly get my inspiration from normal everyday people in all sectors who somehow, through the hardship and many difficulties life throws at them, rise above their challenges and manage to keep their lives together, and achieve so much. My mother has also always been an inspiration to me!
Great strong minded and independent women, who are passionate about life and want to live it to the fullest, know what they want, have good business sense but who are also loving and caring and put the needs of their children and family first. If money was no object, where would you live and what would you do?
What would you like to see happen is South Africa over the next five Years?
List is very long but to put it in a short version: Corruption in Government to stop at all levels, police to clamp down on our high crime rate and put stronger more stringent policing policies in

place, for council and government departments to employ qualified and experienced staff, to focus on education, to focus on opening up more projects that create job opportunities in SA and for the public to stop using apartheid as an excuse for everything – it is over 10 years now so move on and work together as we all live in a great country. What values would you like your children to embrace?
Most importantly I try teach them that everyone is equal and special, to have respect love and compassion for all, to be honest, that nothing comes free in life and only hard work and dedication will get you were you want to be, to always try your best and to never give up, to not worry what people say about you as “Sticks and stones can break your bones but words can never harm you”. Do you have a faith or religious belief?
We are Christians and belong to the OAC in Ballito. I believe that everyone needs a deeper power and faith to hold on to. I believe that no matter what ones belief or religion is that we as humans need to live life in a way that brings love honour and respect to all and that we all have a duty to see how we can help and support one another. Do you support any charity?
Our Prestige schools all follow a “WINGS PROJECT” which means that each branch has to take an underprivileged crèche or orphanage under their wings to help support and uplift it in any way they can. Who Inspires You?
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page” – I love this quote by early Christian theologian and philosopher, St Augustine.

My interest in personal health and working with people lead me to pursue my studies in 'Health and Skincare' where my passion for 'hands on therapy and healing' began. Through skincare therapy and numerous types of massage therapy, my passion for people and their self-worth, health and wellbeing was sparked. Following the completion of my ‘Holistic and Natural Healing Diploma’ my skill for creating a peaceful, quiet and relaxing ‘escape’ for my clients was also realised and grew. That however stirred more interest in me to pursue further true and total holistic self-care which lead me to the start of my kinesiology journey. In a nut shell I believe that having a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition, exercise, ‘quiet me time’ (or meditation), balance between work and play, thinking positively and doing what makes your soul dance helps achieve ‘true self-care.’ Who Inspires You?

oooh so many choices – but at the end of the day I would properly still choose to live in Ballito to be close to my wonderful family and friends. Besides the burning of sugarcane playing havoc with my sinuses, we have great weather, beautiful beaches and it feels like home.

Well I think the North Coast must rate amongst the top places in the world to live. Where else can you enjoy such beautiful weather throughout the year. If money was not an object, I would spend a month in a ski resort in the Italian/French alps and then for another month in the summer, travel and explore a different place every year. What are your goals for the next five years?

I would like to expand my existing knowledge base into several specific fields and would like to look at following other related fields to enable me to better provide the help and service I am passionate about. What would you like to see happen is South Africa over the next five Years?
I would like to see a reduction in selfishness and ignorance throughout the people of this country regardless of race or creed. I feel that this alone would fix a lot of our problems and would restore the country on its path to realising its great potential. What values would you like your children to embrace?
I have not yet been blessed with children, but when the time comes I would like to instil in them a drive for life, a drive for accomplishment, compassion for others and our environment and a thirst for knowledge. How do you deal with fear, uncertainty and doubt?
I stop, breath and I try to remove myself from the situation so I can look at it from the outside or from a third party perspective. This allows me to assess all aspects of the situation and to deal with the real issues at hand, and what really

lies behind the fear, uncertainty and doubt. I also find that this often helps me eliminate many unimportant variables that only seemed important when they were coupled with the main issue at hand.
Do you have a faith or religious belief?
I have faith in a higher power which guides me and helps me make the right decisions while being humble, forgiving and kind. Do you support any charity?
I have no direct support for a specific charity however I give where I am able to to people who present themselves to me who are in need. I also sponsor some treatments for charity fund raising event.

Symone Mackay – Awesym Skin & Body Symone worked in Umhlanga for almost 7 years and was involved with 3 different salons gaining experience and insight. She opened her own salon Awesym Skin and Body in July 2011 and today is happier than ever. It has been a very busy 3 years, during this time they moved to Ballito, had a happy baby girl Skyla and married the man of my dreams, Gary, in June last year. They are now expecting their baby and are truly grateful for all their blessings. Her business is very family orientated with her mum, Moira, a highly experienced and compassionate slender wonder medical weight-loss consultant and her dad, Orlando, taking care of IT and general maintenance. They have also created a nursery at the salon so Skyla can be with them every day and looked after by their loving caregiver Noni. The salon is growing at an awesome rate and our team is absolutely amazing! “Thank you to all our friends, families and loyal clients for all your support, we are very blessed to have you in our lives.” Who Inspires You?
I would have to say the people inspire me are those who never give up no matter what , they keep focused on their dreams and goals. And of course my parents, that always show true and unconditional love towards each other. If money was no object, where would you live and what would you do?
I would probably live where I do – and open a franchise of my salon and a training school for therapists. I would make sure our families are looked after and happy and donate to those who need it most. What are your goals for the next five years?
My goals are to keep growing in my salon, and growing it into a wellness centre that offers many types of different therapies that all complement each other. I would like to study to be a dermatologist as well as that will really help create a higher level for our salon.

I support animal charities as animals are so innocent and need as much help as we can give because at the end of the day all they want and we want is to be loved. Where do you live and why
We live in Ballito now. We lived in Durban before, but love Ballito now - we find it is a wonderful community that helps each other and always gets involved with things in the community. There is such an exciting buzz in Ballito with so much growth and potential.
What do you think of local politics and politicians?
Sometimes it’s best not to get involved, it can sometimes get you down, so I rather focus on the positive and concentrate my energies and thoughts on positive things in life.
Forget about the fast lane. If you really want to fly, just harness your power to your passion . -Oprah.

Nicole Roostee Toptots
I moved to Ballito about 2 years ago with my husband Mathew. After our son, Kent, was born I developed a strong need to do whatever I could do to care for children. I believe every child needs to be loved and protected. I started attending Toptots classes with Kent when he was just over 3 months old. I loved it and so did Kent! So when Natalie Smith, the previous owner of Toptots Ballito announced she was selling her business I jumped at the opportunity! I start the new chapter of Toptots Ballito in Term 3 which commences on the 21st July and runs for 9 weeks. We had our Open Day on Saturday the 12th which was a great success and I hope to make term 3 and the following terms just as exciting.
23 july - 5 aug 2014 What values would you like your children to embrace? Honesty, truth, caring, understanding, tolerance, politeness, and open mind and an open heart. How do you deal with fear, uncertainty and doubt? My husband gives me great strength when I am fearful and uncertain. He is my rock and my safe place. I also see a psychologist (Dr. Kirsten Van Heerden) when times are tough and she helps to put things into perspective. Where do you live and why? I live in Ballito Dolphin Coast. I live here because the climate is wonderful, the town (I no longer think it’s small enough anymore to be classified as a village) is beautiful ,warm and has a great vibe about it and it is full of young families with young children. I love to see children everywhere I go, it warms my heart and I just feel so good inside when I see them smiling and happy. What do you think of local politics and politicians? I have to be honest, I don’t think much! As in, I intentionally don’t spend much time at all thinking about politics or even reading/ listening to the news. I know wearing eyeblinds is a naïve way to live but ever since I have had my baby I just cant hear anything violent about children and sadly there is always something so cruel on the news! And if I have anything to say about politicians they should do something about that!

Who Inspires You?
My late dad inspires me as he always supported me to go beyond my achievements and to reach for the stars and in so doing to always be grateful for what I had and to always reach out to those in need.
If money was no object, where would you live and what would you do?
I would be living on the property we own in the bush running our lodge and contributing to the conservation and rehabilitation of the wildlife there as well as contributing to the well-being of the local villages and its people.
We decided to establish the Clinic out of pure frustration at the experiences of my own 2 daughters and their friends. I started the Clinic to help those with a busy schedule, to take some pressure off of them when looking for an effective fast solution to lice and nit infestation. We are partnered with most schools who welcome the service that we offer, as we do free screenings to help prevent the infestations from getting out of hand and to curb absenteeism from this common problem. Once a treatment has been complete we issue patients with a certificate to say that they are lice and nit free and can return to school. Our treatments are one of a kind as they are chemical, shampoo and lotion free, therefore not harmful to you. own a business, and Zambia where

What do you think of local politics and politicians?
I support the concept of our local politicians so long as they do what they have been elected to do and deliver on their promises.
What would you like to see happen is South Africa over the next five Years?
Equal opportunities for all South Africans so that our children can build their own legacies to hand down to generations below them. And to curb the corruption in general from the top in the next 5 years before its too late.
Who Inspires You? Caroline! When I started going to Toptots with Kent when he was just over 3 months old Caroline was our teacher. She made me feel so brave and that as a mother I was doing a fine job. She gave me the courage to continue to go to classes and to get out and about with my new baby in general. What are your goals for the next five years? From a business perspective I would like to pay off my business and grow a reputable reputation and run a sucssesful workshop that appeals to the Mums and the kids love! On a personal note I would love to establish a balanced life style so that I can run my business successfully but also be at home with my family. What would you like to see happen is South Africa over the next five Years? More and better education to the public, better health care and less cold and starving and sick children!
What values would you like your children to embrace?
Integrity, humbleness, success and a willingness to give back to all that have helped them achieve successfully and always help others. How do you deal with fear, uncertainty and doubt?

My mom. She comes from a financial background and was very strict on me when i first started out a few years ago she taught me to never give up and showed me there is no such thing as failure it's hard work, many sacrifices and never giving up. And as much as fashion is a creative industry and that's my passion she has taught me the the business of fashion which is just as important. If money was no object, where would you live and what would you do?
I think by chasing money you will never be happy I love my job i wouldn't be anywhere else I love Durban my family pets and
Dr Ally Dr Sham Ally qualified as a doctor at Wits in 1999. While Dr Ally continues to work as an Emergency Room Physician, she runs her own aesthetics clinic in Ballito. She has two children. trade for anything else. For the moment at least, I can honestly say that I am content and blessed with where life is taking me. With a few more free hours, I’m sure I could get a lot more involved in voluntary work but all the money in the world could not move me from where I am right now. I count my blessings every day, and pray (every day) that I always remain in God Almighty’s favour. What are your goals…
Who Inspires You?
Human beings have immeasurable potential. The privilege of engaging with little people, big people, sad people, funny people, and all kinds of people in between when they are at their most vulnerable, inspires me to keep doing what I do. No two days are ever alike for me, and more often than I expect it, somebody somewhere moves me. If money was no object,….
If money were no object ( i.e. in another lifetime maybe??), why would I choose to live anywhere but in sunny South Africa, the land of milk and honey , quarter mutton bunny and Bombay Crush? On a serious note though, having lived abroad for a decade (in so-called “First World” countries) I can honestly testify to the adage that “There’s no place like home”. I was born and raised in “Durban”, which is now a metropolis with its own identity, its own distinctiveness, eccentricities and idiosyncrasies. It has an unmatched flavour and spiciness that rubs off on its inhabitants so that wherever you go in the world, you will instantly recognize a “Durbanite” if you see (or hear) one! As for what I would do if money were no object, that’s easy! I would just continue doing what I do now, and just not charge for it. Enhancing each patient’s beauty at my aesthetics clinic has such far-reaching effects and is so rewarding for me personally that I can’t see myself switching to any other field of medicine. Of course, my regular emergency medicine shifts at the local hospitals brings another kind of satisfaction – also one that I wouldn’t
1.Escalate up the ranks to ALPHA status at Bob’s Bootcamp. 2.Become an active member of the School Governing Body at my daughter’s school. 3.Go for Hajj. 4.Add one more qualification to my current repertoire – become board certified with the American Academy of Aesthetics. 5.Decrease the number of annual speeding tickets. How do you deal with fear,….
Being raised as a Muslim has been a blessing with many many disguises! Sometimes it is just blind faith that pulls me through the tough times. I have indeed felt the power of God Almighty in my life, so for me it is not too difficult to revert to my unflinching trust in Him to guide me through. A positive mindset goes a long way too, as does the “voice of reason”. Yet another blessing that I count day in and day out is my husband and life partner – he is my voice of reason, my “go-to” person, my pillar of strength. Whereas I may become overly emotional about an issue, he has the fortitude of objectivity. Thank God for Mahomed Limbada! Do you have a faith…
Yes, you’ve guessed it! I believe that there is just one Supreme Being, God Almighty, who is worthy of worship. Throughout the ages, mankind has been blessed with His Message, and I just happen to be one human being amongst millions of others who has imbibed those teachings. Islam is a way of life, and I conduct my life in a way that feels right to me and resonates well with all those I come in contact with. Do you support any charity?
I donate monetarily, and in kind, throughout the year to various organizations and individuals. It just depends on the need, and of course, the depth of my pockets at the time. Sometimes it’s one or other charitable drive at school, or a crisis somewhere in the world (tsunami, earthquakes, etc), or the SPCA or Girls’ and Boys’ Town, or just sponsoring a Debutant at a school prom. Being charitable is an innate part of being Muslim. See, I told you Islam is a way of life! Where do you live and why?
The decision to leave all of the luxuries and security of Canada we enjoyed and move back to South Africa 3 years ago was not an easy one. But having made the decision nevertheless, my husband and I did lots of homework before deciding where to settle. Ballito was an easy choice for us. We knew we wanted to live close to Durban (that’s where most of our family reside), we knew we wanted a temperate climate (ND for sure), we knew we wanted to be close to the sea, and we certainly wanted to be part of a dynamic economic environment. We watched Ballito’s growth from abroad, and had an inkling as to its further potential, and decided to give it a go. Three years later we’re still here. The community is diverse, the amenities are great (international airport at our doorstep nogal!) and security is at least better than in most other parts of the country. What do you think of local politics…
For this issue I resorted to good ole “Google” to at least help me with the definition of “politics” and “politician”. What I came up with was the fll.. “ POLITICIAN – 1. A person who practices politics.
friends.
What are your goals for the next five years?
In five years from now I hope to have a family and have my business up and running that it doesn't rely on me as much as it does right now.
What would you like to see happen in South Africa over the next five Years?
People to become more aware of supporting local this will help our textile industry and create more jobs. And also for proudly South African designers to support one another. We are such a small industry and would be really nice to have a great comradery which our industry unfortunately lacks. What values would you like your children to embrace?
Without a doubt to have Integrity be humble and hard working Do you support any charity?
I am a proud ambassador for the sunflower fund and am very involved in LIV village
“Politics” is derived from the words “poly” meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “blood-sucking parasites”. 2. One who has perfected the art of lying. 3. A highly paid yes-man. Yet another search for a definition revealed : “ – a seeker or holder of public office, who is more concerned about winning favour or retaining power than about
maintaining principles. - A person who acts in a manipulative or devious way, typically to gain advancement within an organistion.” Well there you have it. That’s what’s trending on Twitter and other social media these days….

Quiz:
The 'All or
What’s Your Fitness IQ?
Nothing
Syndrome Johan Dorfling - Personal Trainer
Marcelle Bendixen Pilates by Design
T
oday most folks are aware of the fact that being physically fit is a critical component to maintaining overall health and increasing longevity. Yet many of us are not all that familiar with the basics of fitness. Physical fitness can be defined as overall bodily health, and includes body composition (percentage of body fat), cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and muscle stamina. To boost your fitness IQ, check out this true or false quiz: Q1: It’s best not to strength train the same muscle groups consecutive days in a row. True If you're training the same muscle group every day, your body won't have a chance to recover, which puts you more at risk for injury or tears. Strength-training exercise includes weight lifting, working with rubber resistance bands, and push-ups or sit-ups, etc. Q2: When you lift weights, you should exhale as you’re lifting. True Always remember, “Exhale as you exert.” Inhaling as you’re lifting can actually make the exercise more difficult. Plus, holding your breath in can be dangerous since it can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure or even fainting. Q3: Cardio burns more calories than strength training. False If you're training the same muscle group every day, your body won't have a chance to recover, which puts you more at risk for injury or tears. Strength-training exercise includes weight lifting, working with rubber resistance bands, and push-ups or sit-ups, etc. Q4: You should drink water before, during and after exercise. True If you don’t hydrate before and during exercise, you can experience dizziness, tiredness or cramping. As a rule of thumb, drink 15-20 ounces of water 1 to 2 hours before your workout, drink 8-10 ounces 15 minutes before you begin, and drink another 8 ounces every 15 minutes during your workout. Q5: Men and women can lose about an average of 5% of their muscle mass every 10 years after age 35. True Muscle mass decline starts to occur even more rapidly in your 40s and at an even faster rate in your 50s. Recent studies show that at 40, women lose muscle mass twice a fast as men, particularly in areas like the core and thigh muscles. But here’s some good news: You can counteract age-related muscle loss by practicing regular resistance training 2- 3 times a week. Q6 You can achieve physical fitness goals with short spurts just as easily as you can with long continuous workouts. True Don’t blow off exercising for the day if you find you can’t fit in your usual 30 minutes on the elliptical machine. Studies show that spreading out your exercise routine over the course of the day – such as a 10-minute walk in the morning and 10 minutes of light strength training at lunchtime – can be just as effective for improving cardiovascular activity, burning calories and also cutting your risk for deadly diseases. Q7: The ideal fitness regimen combines 5 components: aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, stretching, core exercise and balance training. True The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends that adults get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) or 1 hour and 15 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (cycling, running) – preferably spread out throughout the week. Q8 The more you sweat, the more calories you burn. False You sweat when your body starts to store heat so you can experience cooling via evaporation. Sweating has nothing to do with the amount of energy – or calories – being burned. In terms of burning calories to lose weight, physical activity such as exercise is important since it causes your body to use more calories; when you burn more calories than you consume, you lose weight. For more hands on fitness knowledge or advice come and do a complimentary trial session with one of our qualified Pilates Instructors.

T
his is more my personal
observation than a clinical diagnosis.
I see it all the time and it is probably the biggest stumbling block in your quest for achieving that ultimate dream body or their fitness aspirations. I think we have all been there; one day you decide that you are just not happy with your shape anymore and you are going to do something about it. There is just one problem, there is something happening on the weekend, so you'll start after that - on Monday! On Monday you are going to start exercising every day, you are going to eat salads and carrot sticks and you are never going to cheat again. Seriously? Let's be realistic! Believe it or not, exercise is a stress on your body! So on Monday you are going to deprive your body of all the energy that it's use to and you are going to load this extra new stress on your body??? Not to mention all the cravings and urges you are going to be fighting. This is a recipe for disaster and yet people try it over and over again. Normally this lasts about a week until you decide it's too unbearable and you are going to go back to your undisciplined ways or you get sick. You have just hammered your body with exercise; given it just about no fuel to recover on and you expect it to get stronger and leaner? Be realistic! Exercise does not have to be hell. You should be able to finish your first few sessions feeling like you could have done more. Do this for at least 2 to 3 weeks to help you through the 'Alarm Stage'. During this initial alarm stage your fitness actually declines and your immune system weakens because of the new stressors. It's only once you are through this initial period that you actually start improving your fitness. Your fitness is a long term investment and you will go backwards every time you try and take a short cut. What if you started a year ago and just did two sessions a week? That would be over a

your fitness capabilities.
7. Make sure your plan is easily
sustainable. There is no use starting a
'6 day a week for 12 weeks' plan when
you know it's not possible! 8. Not all exercise is equal. Make sure that the exercise that you are doing is 100% specific to your goals. 9. Be consistent.
You can start your new routine any day of the week; it doesn't have to be on Monday! It's not a magic formula that needs to be adhered to 100%. So when you do fall off the wagon, don't wait for Monday to get back on. Johan - 072 340 1213

What are semi- Permanent Eyelash Extensions?
S
emi-Permanent Eyelash extensions are the newest revolutionary eyelash treatment giving you longer, thicker, curlier natural looking lashes. Not to be confused with the traditional false eyelashes which are made with a strip or with multiple lashes knotted together and applied directly onto the eyelid, our lash extensions are applied with strong lash glue to the lash only. Neither the extension lash nor glue touches the eyelid. The bond is designed to last until the natural lash has finished its cycle and both the natural lash and extensions will fall out together. Although if one uses oil based products on the lashes or rubs their eyes regularly the extensions may fall out faster. Make Up Your Mind at Burnedale applies one extension to one natural lash. I
f you want the flowing locks of Jessica Simpson, the blonde tresses of Brittany Spears and the abundance of swirl in Beyoncé’s crowning glory, you will have to follow what most of the stars, and others, are doing right now.
It’s all about “clip on” extensions. Clip on extensions come in both human hair and synthetic options; I would recommend the human hair option as they last longer and look better. Some of the most frequently asked questions are how long they will last, how to attach them, how to maintain them and what colour, shape and length to purchase? With regular use, the human hair option should last up to a year before appearing a little tired. To achieve maximum duration of life span from your pieces it is suggested that you do not sleep with them in your hair, that you wash them with a salon grade shampoo and conditioner, use salon grade protective spray when styling and make sure that washing only occurs between and after every ten to twenty times of use. Choose a colour that is almost identical to your own to ensure that re-colouring does not have to occur as this will compromise the integrity of the
pieces and, if it is necessary to re colour, this must be carried out by a professional. Extensions come in lengths of about fifteen to twenty inches, can be cut to fit (I again suggest by a professional) and will range from curly to straight to match your own hair type. You may not have to choose your exact hair type as styling can alter the shape of both your hair and the extensions. Placing the extensions into the hair must start from the bottom up and across the back of the head from ear to ear this is the best point to start. Step two is to open all the sturdy little clips and attach them to the root of the hair starting with the middle of the three clips. The longer wefts or strings of hair come with three to four clips. Be sure to balance the clip-on's evenly around the head from there on up for uniformity. Establish the clips snugly against the scalp to ensure they are secure, however, and for obvious reasons, do not try to slide them out without unclipping first. As a parting tip and as an alternative to frequent washing that will compromise the structure of the weft, leaving your extensions out to air will apparently also extend their usable life. Happy styling!

SIX HOT TIPS
TO BUILDING A BRAND
Branding is the process of creating a clear, consistent message about your business, product or service. Crafting a unique and effective brand has become an essential element of business success in today’s market. Here are six “must do’s” for building an effective brand for your business:
Sean Dercksen

1. Be the face of your business
rod briggs
am currently travelling the back roads of South Africa, the roads less travelled if you will, far removed from cellphone and internet connections. It is an education; from the Wild Coast to the mystical Amatole mountains, the variations of climate, social environ and geography are counterpointed by the unity of the thinking of the locals. They’re not, for the most part, apprehensive about national strikes, corrupt politicians or government hand outs as the greater proportion of the urban masses seem to be. They are concerned more directly with what they must do to better their lives. They have realised that if they want something to change in their lives, they must be the catalyst; no one, neither local municipalities, regional leaders or central government, is likely to come to their aid. In Coffee Bay I found people earning a living in the most unique of ways; in the mist shrouded forests of Hogsback I heard a woman, who opened her magnificent garden to the public say “Hogsback makes you get creative” and in the ghost town of Thomas River I saw an entire village brought back to life. Realising that the power to create, to start an enterprise, to uplift yourself, to achieve greater potential is yours, and yours alone, is the beginning of regaining your power. The media would have us believe that we have “rights” when in actual fact our rights must be balanced by our responsibilities. This controlling of the masses is reminiscent of something written by Ayn Rand fifty years ago: “ When you see that
23 july - 5 aug 2014
When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing. When you see money flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favours, when you see that men get richer by graft and pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you. When you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a selfsacrifice you may know that our society is doomed.” Stop being part of the problem; start your journey to personal power by taking responsibility, not just appealing for your rights. To paraphrase JFK stop asking what your country can do for you and start questioning what you can do for yourself. Namaste Rod Briggs is an International Lecturer in the Mind Sciences. If you want to build an effective brand, you've got to give your business a face. A buyer doesn't identify with a product or service itself, but rather with a person who creates, sells, or uses that product or service. As the owner of a small business, it's your responsibility to be that person.
2. Choose the right logo
Choosing the right logo to represent your business is critical, and the sheer number of studies about visual brand recognition are overwhelming. Many businesses try to convey multiple layers of meaning in their logos, and to use them as sort of subconscious attractors, but the most essential elements of a good logo are simplicity, attractiveness, and cohesion with your business.
3. Strive for superior customer service Once you've launched and established your brand, constantly keep it in a good light by accepting nothing less than top customer service. It's a lost art in many businesses, but good customer care can turn a once-off buyer into lifelong supporter. If you ingrain this philosophy into your culture, customer service can in effect become your brand - and that's a powerful tool.
4. Promote what sets you apart
When creating your brand, it's important to understand and emphasize what it is that sets you apart from your competition. It can be as basic as specific services you may provide, or your pledge to offer lower prices than your competitors. In an economic environment like this one, branding yourself as unique in your market can help your business break away from the pack.
5. Make sure your staff fully understands your brand
If your staff are not united in understanding the image you're trying to portray, all your efforts could be lost. Constantly reinforce the importance of your branding message in staff meetings and in every task you assign. A company that lives and breathes its brand identity is a cohesive unit, and
World's Most Expensive Surfboard Yours for Just R13 Million…
C
arved from rare wood with a 23-carat gold lion motif, the world's most expensive surfboard is priced at $1.3 million. The beautiful board named The Rampant was created by New Zealand-based surfboard designer Roy Stuart - who has more than 20 years of experience behind him (and an obviously inflated opinion of his worth). At 3.2m long, the board is made with timber from Paulownia - a tree native to Asia - and has a gold lion painted on with a red resin outline. The bottom of the board has a unique tunnel fin crafted from kahikatea wood - a tree native to New Zealand. Combined with the tunnel fin is a polycarbonate fin, which gives the board rapid acceleration, and a single concave shape from nose to tail vastly improves balance. Stuart said the expensive price tag reflected his years of experience as a surfboard designer and
the quality product one would receive at the end. 'High price is a consequence of the ultimate design and performance of a lifetime. 'Life is short, get the best if you can - price is just a number but the experience is forever.' Oh, cool…why not take two then…one for him and one for her!
when every part functions to serve the machine, there's no stopping you.
6. Be consistent with your message
Once you establish the tone and message of your brand, never stray from it. Whether it's your social media posts or your email marketing strategy, being consistent is key. A business with an unclear or muddled brand is going struggle. Final thoughts If you're having trouble crafting an effective and unique brand for your business, don't be afraid to ask for help from the professionals. Also consider asking your friends and family how they perceive your business. Sometimes it takes that perspective from a trusted person examining you from outside your bubble to help you really identify what it is that makes you so unique. Putting time, research, and effort into developing and projecting your brand is one of the early steps to creating a thriving business. BEE Hits the Comics
Now Captain America will be Black
M
arvel Comics has announced the new Captain America will be African-American for the first time in the comic franchise's history. Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon, a crimefighting partner of the original 'Cap' Steve Rogers, will be taking over the reins in the 'All-New Captain America' which is due to be released in November. Wilson is stepping in for Rogers after the original superhero lost his special powers and youth last month. The news comes in the same week comic book fans were rocked by an unexpected move by Marvel, when it revealed that Thor is now a woman. Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort said Wilson's move to become Captain America 'shouldn't be seen as revolutionary.' 'It's about time. In 2014, this should be a thing that we shrug off,
Marvel makes laest announcement just one day a fter revealing

it shouldn't be seen as revolutionary, but it still feels exciting,' the New York Daily News quoted him as saying. The change however will only be made on the page at the moment, with actor Chris Evans due to continue portraying the superhero on the big screen. Writer Rick Remander told Marvel.com: 'I think that it’s important with these stories to do things that are natural and make sense and have an inherent logic to the universe, but are also constantly shifting and exciting, keeping the drama high. 'In order to do that it really comes down to creating new dynamics.' Last Tuesday it was reported that Marvel was experimenting with bringing in a new audience after revealing hammer-wielding superhero Thor is now a woman. Reaction to the proposed change was mixed, with fans taking to Marvel's Facebook page to rail against changes to their childhood heroes. Many questioned how the plot line will allow for this mysterious woman to take over the hammer of Thor, speculating on whether she is a long-lost relative.

A common mistake of new cyclists is inefficient use of their gears. When moving from one gradient to another, it’s crucial to shift gears swiftly so as not to lose momentum and precious energy. A good way of thinking about gears is that they are the means of keeping your cadence (pedalling rate) steady at 8090rpm over a long period of time and a variety of gradients. Too high a cadence will lessen force and elevate heart rate, whilst laborious, lower pedal frequency will increase power per revolution and burn through fuel stores more swiftly. Switching gears nice and early will keep your pedalling more consistent, making your ride smooth and fluid. Most bike set ups these days come equipped with what is known as a compact chain set as standard: A 50-tooth outer front chainring and a 32-tooth inner front chainring coupled with a rear cassette ranging from 11 up to 32 tooth sprockets in varying ranges (12/23, 12/27, 11/28 etc). Try to avoid using the opposing extremes on your chain and cassette. You don’t want to be in the big chainring on the front and the big sprocket on the back or the small chainring on the front and small sprocket at the back. This will result in a less than optimal chain line that will increase stress and rate of wear on your chain, front chainrings and rear cassette. Most chain drops result from changing up and down from the small chainring to the large chainring on the front whilst under continued load. It’s best to ease off pressure for a split second to allow for the change to occur more freely, similarly to the way you engage the clutch in a car before changing gears. Start by moving the chain towards the centre of the rear cassette a couple of clicks,
CompuGeeks computer sales & repairs
and then move the front chainrings up or down. This will lessen the chance of dropping or jamming the chain. The key to efficient gear use is anticipation. If you know what’s ahead, whether it’s a climb, a descent, a wet surface or an obstacle, you can have your gearing prepared. If you’re on a descent you can see a climb approaching, for example, change down on the rear cassette so that the chain is towards the middle of the block as you approach the climb. Then, as soon as you hit the climb you can change down easily on the front chainring. If you change under load (ie. once the gradient has increased) you will have lost all your momentum, forcing you to work harder as you crunch through the gears. In the next issue we’ll be looking at descending.
