ver the past two weeks, the real boss of the L&S team, Sue, and ten companions, set out to climb the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro. As I am in complete awe of their achievement, I thought I would abdicate from the column in this issue in favour of local artist, chef, published author and raconteur, Natasha Barnes who describes the adventure excellently.

Everything was weighed and recorded and then, off we set, ambling upwards through a magnificent forest. Before long, the sun had set and we were in the dark, making our way towards the first night’s camp by torchlight and the sliver of a moon peeping through the forest canopy. Black Colobus monkeys rustled in the trees and we saw a little civet dart across the path in front of us. The mood was upbeat and the promise of a warm sleeping bag and hot meal spurred us on. and were now starting to make their way down. People were crying from pain and relief, others were being dragged off the mountain, disorientated, exhausted, some with broken limbs, some bleeding from the mouth. Guides and porters have their hands full trying to steady the ship and get everyone down as soon as possible. But ahead of us was yet another challenge. Stella point is only the top of the mountain, not the highest point, and we set off on one of the longest journeys of my life for the final victory. This was where you separate the men from the boys. Those last 200meters is what Kilimanjaro is made of. Finally, after what seemed like hours of torture, we reached Uhuru. It is here you break down and cry, from relief and gratitude and the realisation that you are one of the very few people on this earth who will ever have the privilege of stepping up to such greatness. I don’t think this escaped any of us and to say we all made it… together… has brought a new bond to remarkable friends now bound by the journey forever.

Property is our business. People our passion. IDA DU PLOOY - HARCOURTS DOLPHIN COAST
“No wind is of service to him that is not bound for a particular port” French Proverb.
THERE IS MORE TO PRICE THAN OPINION
T
ODAY’S buyers become price knowledgeable very quickly as they research and compare properties in the market. A typical buyer’s journey in purchasing a new property starts long before anyone has made contact with him. It starts with his personal research of properties and prices making use of property website portals 24/7 using laptops, mobiles and tablets. STEP 1: They then refine their budget, the location and property types, before making their viewing list. STEP 2: When viewing the selected choice the buyers continue to compare properties for value. During this phase they may change their budget criteria before they fine tune their search. STEP 3: This is the period where they focus on the one or two top choices before making an offer on their first choice. STEP 4: When the negotiations start and if unsuccessful, they will offer on their second choice or start the process from the start. During every phase of their journey, PRICE is crucial in their decision making. CAN YOU VALUE YOUR OWN PROPERTY OBJECTIVELY? As any experienced Estate Agent will tell you, the correct pricing of a property can only be determined by “an able and willing buyer’s offer being accepted by a willing seller”. So often sellers take the stand that they “want or need a fixed amount determined by themselves and that they will not contemplate anything below their perceived price”. Understanding the local market and dealing in property as a career, good agents are in tune with market trends and buyer requirements. Here is a BREAKDOWN of the age groups
of recent buyers in BALLITO, excluding Zimbali, from August 2015 to August 2016: 42.3% buyers between 36-49 years old were the highest percentage group who bought properties. 32.1% were 50-64 years old. This group were mostly interested in retirement accommodation with no or few stairs, security and lock-u-and-go convenience, down-sizing 15.8% were younger than 35 years old. “Fewer foreign buyers are investing in homes in South Africa, and while this has little noticeable impact domestically, it underlines the tough conditions confronting the property market.” – Richard Grey, CEO Harcourts South Africa. Foreign buyers are mostly prominent in Cape Town (8% of the total buyers) and have little impact on the local Ballito market. Obviously different things appeal to different age groups, it is therefore imperative to know who to target when listing your property to sell. For the “Generation X” group (born between 1980 – 2000) the condition of the property is important as they lack the time for a ‘fix-me-up’ house. They will pay particular attention to the state of fixtures and the condition of the property. Many of them are young professionals needing space to work from home. They will also be the ones interested in technology and good internet reception will be an important factor when buying. Generation X is less likely to negotiate on their offering price once they have made up their minds. As almost every second buyer falls into this category, the question to ask yourself is: how is your property competing out there? Should you not call the property professionals of Harcourts Dolphin Coast to work in partnership with you in the multifaceted selling process in achieving the BEST PRICE possible for your property? Let us prepare a researched and comprehensive market appraisal for your property: free of charge. Call on us to find you the buyer for your home as this is not a ‘Do it yourself” project to take on in this slowing down property market. Everyone has an opinion which must be substantiated by facts - we at Harcourts Dolphin Coast can offer you this unique service. THE LITCHI ORCHARD NIGHT MARKET
PRICE IS WHAT YOU PAY, VALUE IS WHAT YOU GET
W
ONLINE
Shaun Latter
ARREN BUFFETT once said, “Price is what you pay, value is what you get”. Until now the value
placed on the discipline of Financial Planning has largely been intangible, with strap lines such as “peace of mind” or “creating financial wellbeing” being marketed. These are all very warm and fuzzy, but in the current economic environment with the general lack of faith most have in what is still a sales driven industry, paying a fee to someone to help you arrange and manage your financial life seems unjustified. However, recent independent
studies by Morningstar into the value of Financial Planning exposed some interesting results.
This study unveiled that a good financial planner could enhance your retirement income by as much as 23 percent. This is also in line with recent findings by Vanguard (US Asset Manager) with regards to the value of sound planning and advice. This extra return has become known as “advice gamma” – derived from the other Greek letters used in investment management which are beta (the basic market return) and alpha (the returns above the market). Morningstar has concluded that you can enhance your investment returns by at least 1.5 percent a year (after fees). This may not sound like much, however, after just three years, this could result in a 23 percent increase in income for retirement. As an example, being able to increase your income drawdown from 5% of the capital balance to 6.5% of the capital balance can make a significant difference in your ultimate lifestyle. If you are still 5-10 years from retirement, you have an even greater advantage. This can be achieved by implementing just five financial planning-derived practices: * Ensuring that your earning capacity and your investments are aligned; * Finding the optimal way to withdraw
an income from your investments; * Reducing risk by making sure that your investments (such as your pension) are matched to your liabilities; * Allocating your retirement savings to the appropriate annuity; and * Ensuring that asset allocation and withdrawals are tax-efficient. So what’s the catch? Well, for one, it assumes a “good Financial Planner” which can be hard to come by. As a general guideline, this should equate to an appropriate tertiary qualification with adequate experience. They should also have a robust financial modelling and analysis tool (not a sales calculator) at their disposal – something that is still surprisingly rare. This is where the Financial Planning Institute (FPI) comes into its own. This professional body is the custodian of the CFP® designation which is globally recognized as the quality assurance stamp for sound ethical planning and advice. Secondly, many advisers focus the majority of their attention on marketing the “best” fund manager with the “best” investment houses. Besides being a dubious exercise (remember there are in excess of 1000 funds in circulation where only past performance is certain), doing this robs the investor of much needed returns. Considering that less than 10% of managers will outperform the market over the long term, Alpha will essentially be only a slim possibility (so much for that “peace of mind” and “wellbeing”). In contrast, the advice gamma introduced by Morningstar is a certain consequence of the planning principles. The bottom line is, find someone who holds the CFP® designation and incorporates the above principles in the planning process and advice philosophy. Without being dramatic, it could mean the difference between success or failure in retirement. “Peace of mind” should just be the cherry on the top.

HE Litchi Orchard Night Market is a truly unique and magical event - a vibrant blend of great food, drink and music. The Night Market is held on the last Friday each month, from 5pm to 10pm and the popularity of the event continues to attract both locals and visitors alike. The international search for the plane, which vanished on 8 March 2014, focused on the southern Indian Ocean, but investigators seem no closer to solving one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history. No wreckage has been discovered in the area. Instead, five pieces of debris were found on the coasts of Reunion Island, Mozambique, Mauritius

The bag shows scorch marks and evidence that it had been on the ocean floor for many months. Sadly he left the bag where he found it and on his return, it had disappeared with whatever evidence it contained that may have linked it to flight MH370. THE 5 RULES FOR DRINKING CHAMPAGNE ON ICE
M
OËT & CHANDON, one of the most prestigious champagne brands since 1743, want you to commit an act of sacrilege -- they want you to put ice in their wine. While Dionysus clutches his pearls somewhere, let us explain. Moët Ice Imperial is the first champagne specifically designed to be sipped over cubes. Because this means that everything we thought we knew about drinking champagne is probably a lie, we asked Moët for some ground rules. First off, here’s a little background on the good stuff Champagne is pretty much made from a balanced combo of three grapes: reds pinot noir & pinot meunier, and white chardonnay. But Moët Ice Imperial consists of about 90% of the red blends -- for good reason. This gives the wine a rich flavour that can stand up to a bit of ice dilution, with just enough acidity from the chardonnay to keep it refreshing. The pinot noir lends fruity flavours, meunier gives it a rich mouthfeel, and the chardonnay brings acidity to the glass. Perfect harmony. HERE’S HOW YOU SHOULD BE DRINKING IT RULE 1: Stick it in a large glass Because taste is like, 75% smell (we’re not scientists/mathematicians), the layers of aromatic flavours that make up Moët Ice Imperial deserve to be smelled properly. Which means go ahead and put away that champagne flute. Those skinny little things were designed to give drinkers a visual of champagne’s bubbly nature, but you’ll get a better whiff of your wine by using a large, wide brimmed glass. Also, obviously, flutes are pretty lousy at holding ice, so trade up and thank us later. RULE 2: Use three ice cubes Just because you can pour this wine over ice doesn’t mean you should fill your glass to the brim to create a murky champagne slushy. Three large cubes is the ideal amount to get the right ratio of water to wine. Your first sip will be fruity and intense, but you’ll get a more
balanced flavour as the ice begins to melt (slowly enough to avoid immediately flushing your glass with excess water -- a little sacrilege is fine, but criminality is not). RULE 3: Go ahead and garnish Moët Ice Imperial naturally has notes of fruit that can be enhanced further by the flavours released through garnishes like mint leaves or lemon peels, while other champagnes might be overwhelmed. Throw in some raspberries, strawberries, or a slice of lemon and those flavours will make for some seriously aromatic summertime freshness. RULE 4: Mix it in a cocktail In most classic cocktails, champagne is really just used to add a bit of effervescence. But with a champagne like Moët Ice Imperial, where the flavours are strong enough to withstand a bit of dilution, the wine takes on a more central role. For example, if you’re drinking a French 75, the spirit and acidity will usually overpower the champagne -- but Moët Ice Imperial is bold enough to elegantly push back. And cocktails at brunch only get better too, now that they have the ability to withstand dilution from a few ice cubes. Finally, you won’t have to worry about your drink getting warm/gross when you opt to sit outside. RULE 5: Don’t be afraid of the sun We probably have you on the ice thing -- you’re a convert. But maybe you’re still a little tentative about taking that iced champagne out of the shade and directly under the sun? Here’s the thing, though: this champagne was designed with hazy, scorching days in mind. It was actually inspired by the misguided attempts of St. Tropez vacationers to cool brut-champagne with ice and succeeding in only watering it down. It’s at its bubbly-best with the clink of ice and the condensation fogging up the glass. So the next time you’re squeezing in one last beach day, braai, or outdoor brunch, don’t be afraid to pop a bottle.

URBAN’S favourite Pinotage festival - Pinotage-on-Tap (POT) - is fast approaching, with very few days left until the event. This year the Durban leg will take place on 24 September 2016 – the same day that we celebrate National Heritage Day in South Africa. Dawn Arendse, organiser of the POT festivals, says that as Pinotage wine is a proudly South African varietal, hosting the event on such a momentous day was the perfect fit. “At this year’s festival Pinotage lovers will once again be treated to an abundance of Diemersfontein’s Original Coffee-Chocolate Pinotage, flowing straight from the barrel, coupled with delectable food, live local entertainment and a goodie bag on arrival. We are also excited to announce that the headlining act for the Durban event will be the dynamic jazz-electro-hip-pop songstress, Toya Delazy, supported by Edisontide.” In preparation for Heritage Day, Diemersfontein is equipping South Africans with a traditional Chicken Butter Curry recipe which can be paired with a glass of Pinotage wine. “We believe that these two uniquely South African treats are perfectly paired as the Pinotage emphasises the full-bodied flavours of the Curry. Festival goers can look forward to a variety of dishes on the day which pair perfectly with Diemersfontein’s Original Coffee-Chocolate Pinotage.

SAMSON DIAMOND, SHARON DE KOCK, GUY BUTTERY, JEANNE-LOUISE MOOLAMN, ANMARI VAN DER WESTHUIZEN.
S
INCE 2011, renowned South African guitar player Guy Buttery has been working on a project that combines his virtuosic solo guitar playing and distinctly African musical voice with contemporary compositional techniques and arrangements.
Based in Bloemfontein, The Odeion String Quartet is the ultimate “miniorchestra”. Creating a myriad musical layers and colours, this collaboration stretches the possibilities of its known format and instrumentation. Performing a “best-of” of his collective works from the last 15 years along with brand new
compositions unique to this project, Buttery relooks at the guitar and string quartet presentation and catapults it to new heights. The Odeion String Quartet is Guy Buttery on acoustic guitar and mbira; Samson Diamon on first violin; Sharon de Kock on second violin; Jeanne Louise Moolman on viola; and Anmari van der Westhuisen on cello. After sold out performances at this year’s National Arts Festival, Buttery teams up with The Odeion String Quartet for one night of magic at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at UKZN campus on Monday 3 October at 19.30.

stages of the renovation and this is where things become agonising…so near and yet…so far. One can now get a very good idea of how effective the overall transformation is going to be, but the finishing always takes longer than imagined.
In the previous issue I lamented the fact that the kitchen units had been installed sooner than I thought was prudent because of the amount of work that was still to be done in the kitchen area. I regret to say that this caused a degree of unhappiness from Johan and his team at cupboard value because he saw this as a criticism, so I need to set the record straight. I have only the highest praise for the Cupboard Value team. Their work is exemplary and I have been impressed with their professionalism in every aspect of the project. I also understand that because they are top of their game, they are extremely

The unforeseen delay in progress on the interior of the building was one of those variables that happens… I have every confidence that when the kitchen is finally commissioned, it will be awesome. One aspect of the renovation that I have been particularly impressed with has been the remodelling of the main entrance to the house with the addition of a wider pivot door. This door incorporated two glass panels that allow for more light in the entrance way. It creates an altogether grander statement at the entrance to the home and is really striking.
TOP TIP:
Replacing an ordinary front door with a wider pivot door is a relatively simple exercise and adds a real “wow” factor to your home. There is a range of pivot doors currently on display at Mica in the Lifestyle Centre. Tracy from Refreshed Designs has been spot on with finishing details and the extra wide skirting and architraves that are currently being installed are absolutely gorgeous. And the colour palette selected works extraordinarily well. The idea is to create a neutral canvass in

This week Atom Gas will be in to install the gas hob and Ohms Electrical will install the other kitchen units and the lights – a fabulous selection from Global Light Fittings and Allied supplies. I have been blown away by the service we have received from these guys. It’s so important to select what not only looks good but what works well in the extreme humidity that we experience seasonally on the coast. Jacques Wright and his team certainly know their stuff and I recommend them to anyone tackling a similar project.

WAYS TO USE COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY IN YOUR HOME
C
olour is a powerful tool that can be used to inspire emotions, create space illusions or simply set the mood and atmosphere for any particular room. Especially when used with interior and exterior painting, colour psychology is a great way to create a healthy and beautiful home. Here are some ways to use colour psychology in your home. • Create the illusion of space with bright colours: If you want your home to look larger than it really is – especially when it is about to go on the market – you can use bright and vibrant colours like yellows and eggshells to add space to your home exterior. As a warning, avoid the common colour white. Although it can add space, it is nowhere near as effective as tinted colours. • Use foyer blends to naturally combine interior and exterior paint: One of the best ways to wow your guests as
WHY HIDE YOUR CABLES AND CORDS, WHEN YOU CAN TURN THEM INTO BEAUTIFUL WALL ART?
they enter your home is to use a blend of your interior and exterior colours in your entrance. You can also use your exterior paint colour on parts of your interior to achieve the same general effect. • Use relaxing colours in relaxing rooms: In your bedroom and bathroom, cool colours can form a relaxing atmosphere with paint. Consider shades of blue, green or even lavender to calm yourself in your escape rooms. When using this technique, remember that the darker the shade of colour you choose, the more apparent the effect. • Concentrate in your home office with green: Green inspires concentration in a home office setting. And, after all, the faster you get your work done, the more time you will have to spend with your family. In addition to a green plant, try painting the room with a light green. However, don’t turn your home office into a jungle. Over doing it can be distracting.
•
Inspire optimism with yellow: As you might expect, yellow is a perfect colour for a sunroom. However, a great way to use yellow inside your home is in an entryway or enclosed front porch. As you leave for the day to go to work or school, the yellow paint in this area will give you one last boost of optimism before the daily grind. • Don’t be fooled by purple: Although purple signifies wealth and romanticism, it is very rare in the natural world and can be very artificial within your home decor. If you really want some purple in your home, try blending it with more natural colors like subtle yellows or greens. • Black isn’t just for a teenager’s room: Black can be a tough nut to crack if used to paint your walls. The problem with black is that it gives the illusion of tight space. If you would like to satisfy your teenager’s cries for a black room, consider a black ceiling with a few stars.
If you want to go all out, you can decorate with a night-time landscape theme across the room. • There’s a reason bathroom fixtures are usually white: White not only symbolizes fertility and cleanliness, but it also makes cleaning easier in the bathroom. You don’t want stains to be hidden so they go without being cleaned. Knowing that the bathroom is clean and fresh with lovely white paint can put your mind at ease and inspire relaxation. • When all else fails, look to nature: When using colour psychology in your home, choose paints that remind you of nature. Colours that appear in nature will blend perfectly in your home interior. However, with the exterior of your home, bright colours are, more often than not, the best choice for a more welcoming living space.

SANTA SHOEBOX PROJECT CELEBRATES ITS 10TH BIRTHDAY!
W
HEN the Santa Shoebox Project founders began collecting shoeboxes filled with gifts for underprivileged children in 2006, they never imagined that the project would soon become one of South Africa’s most popular annual festive season charity projects. This year the project celebrates its 10th birthday. To date, it has distributed more than 550 000 personalised shoeboxes to socially disadvantaged children across South Africa and Namibia. The Ballito satellite is now in its fourth year with the children ranging in age from 2 to 18. Last year, Santa Shoebox BALLITO distributed close to 1000 Santa Shoeboxes to needy children at 5 local facilities. The target for 2016 is 1000 boxes.
SO, HOW DOES IT WORK? Donors register online at www.santashoebox.co.za and then select a child by name, age and gender as well as their preferred drop off point. Pledging opened on 1 September 2016. Donors decorate and fill their shoebox according to the guidelines provided on the Santa Shoebox website, and boxes must include eight practical necessities – toothpaste and a toothbrush, facecloth and soap as well as sweets, educational supplies, a toy and a clothing outfit. All items must be new and age-appropriate. “This worthy initiative encourages the whole family to become involved and adopt it as a family project providing an opportunity for children to learn from an early age, the gift of giving,” says local co-ordinators Natalie Smith and Kirsten Abery. “Donors are encouraged to involve their own children in the process of personally selecting the name of a child and putting together his or her personal Santa Shoebox gift. Uniquely, this means each participant knows the first name, age and gender of the child.” The box is then dropped off at the donors’ local registered dropoff point on the appointed days and is then distributed by Santa Shoebox volunteers to the respective children in November. BALLITO dropoff is 4 and 5 November 2016 at Christ Church North Coast, 1 Old Main Road, Umhlali. For more details on pledging a box or volunteering at dropoff, please visit www. santashoebox.co.za or contact Kirsten Abery on 083 326 3968 or Natalie Smith on 082 372 0500.

JORNO PORTABLE BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD
F
OR some reason, the world just wants to put more and more into your pocket. Check out the Jorno, which fits a tablet/smartphone dock AND complete QWERTY keyboard into a palm, and consequently pocket-sized device. I’ve always loved the touch of a tactile keyboard, and with the Jorno, I can have the joy of the clackety-clack of keys beneath my fingertips. The keyboard unfolds into a full sized layout that allows your fingers to comfortably dance from left to right. The rest of the Jorno transforms into a dock for your smart-device. All you have to do is pair the Jorno to your device and you can say goodbye to those disgusting on-screen touch-sensitive keyboards. Ugh! The Jorno is so small, it barely occupies as much space as a secondary phone or a power-bank. Its battery gives you a whopping 85 hours of continuous typing time, and a MicroUSB port allows you to charge your Jorno. No matter how big your phone or tablet is, or how crisp its screen is, nothing beats the tactile experience of a physical keyboard, and with the Jorno, you can literally carry one in your pocket!

MORE TO KEEP RAV'ING ABOUT
TOYOTA RAV4 MODELS SPECIFICATION TWEAKED
T
HE Toyota RAV4 remains one of South Africa’s favourite Sport Utility Vehicles, racking up over 400 units on a monthly basis; it has established itself as one of the segment leaders in this competitive marketplace.
For 2016, the range receives some enhancements with the top-of-the-range VX model enjoying most of the action.
The VX grade receives a boost in safety specification (which will also appease the tech-heads) with the addition of Lane Change Assist. This system also incorporates Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with a convenient indicator housed within the exterior mirrors. Making shopping mall parking manoeuvres less stressful is the Cross Traffic Alert function, which warns the driver of approaching vehicles when ‘alley docking’. This electronic suite of features, join the already comprehensive safety specification list, which includes;
• • • • • •
9 Airbags incl. driver knee ABS + EBD + BA Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) Hill Assist Control (HAC) Trailer Sway Control (TSC) Downhill Assist Control (DAC) on 4WD models • ISOFIX The ‘specification tailoring’ continues with the inclusion of stylish foot-well lighting, bolstering both aesthetics and convenience, and deletion of the sunroof. The model line-up continues as before with three engines (two petrol and one diesel) and both 2WD and AWD derivatives on offer. Pricing ranges from R367 000 to R513 000 The complete RAV4 range is backed by a 5 year/90 000 km service plan and 3 year/100 000 km warranty.
