EVERYONE IS READING

from the Editor

W

e are living in an age of unprecedented technological wizardry and this year is going to be the year when artificial intelligence or AI really comes of age. The experts are confident that robots will soon replace people in many areas of commerce and industry which will lead to all sorts of challenges – the fourth industrial revolution is upon us.

Intelligence, artificial or otherwise, seems to be in short supply when it comes to addressing the plethora of problems we face as a species on our beleaguered planet and we can only hope that the age of AI will bring with it solutions to some of the more pressing issues facing us. On the subject of technology, I am really enjoying the convenience of online shopping. I have over the past year or so, found a host of lovely things on the World Wide Web and have generally been amazed at the service. My wife, Sue has been equally active online and her latest acquisition arrived on Friday. It came in a relatively small cardboard box and it took two guys to deliver it to our door in Ballito... it was heavy! It was, in fact, one of those ubiquitous flat-packs that have been

responsible for the global increase in marriage guidance counselling and conflict mediation. If ever you want to test the resilience of your relationship, I suggest you buy one of these – a lovely chest of drawers that comes complete with a huge packet of assorted fixtures and a flimsy set of instructions without any words apart from an overview and safety warning. Everything else is pictorial and alphanumerically cryptic. As a kid I was a wiz at building model aircraft and vehicles and I love jigsaw puzzles too so I was not unduly daunted at the prospect of assembling this furniture kit. One thing they did spell out in the instruction pamphlet was that this kit required two men to assemble it and would take about forty minutes. They omitted to say what tools might be required and they did supply a small Allen key. There were about a million pieces in the box that filled the room when spread out and the fixtures covered an entire small table top. My two man team consisted of Sue and me so strictly speaking I had already disregarded their first instruction. And that pretty much set the tone for what followed. I won’t bore you with the details. Suffice it to say that three hours later we were still trying to work out the kinks. Pieces were assembled backwards

CY

and screw holes were misaligned requiring some creative adjustment, but eventually the finished product stood complete for all to admire. I suppose there was a sense of achievement at the end of the exercise and we hadn’t really fallen out over the odd lost screw or cranky interpretation of the incomplete instructions, but I will say this. If you are ever tempted to shop online for an item of furniture like a chest of drawers, make sure it comes fully assembled - or pay to have it assembled on site. It will be worth the money, whatever it costs! As for artificial Intelligence, perhaps the flat packers could employ some to design their instruction leaflets…it’s just a thought… Welcome to the first edition of Life & Style for 2017 - and here’s to a superintelligent year for all of us! . IRSTLY a hearty welcome back to our Ashton Families, especially all our new families. We often talk about one stop schooling – how very convenient to have all your children on one campus. There are many families with more than one child at Ashton, but to have a child in every phase of the school is quite unique. We cater for students from Grade 00-00 to Grade 12 and still manage to unlock the potential of each individual.

Our College philosophy is ‘To ensure you surround yourself

• Expanding - additional Grade 2, Grad 6 classes

• Grade 0000 - Grade 12 with people on the same mission as you.’ When I reflect on the end of the 2016 Academic Year, this is very evident. You are surrounded by parents, teachers and students who after a seriously challenging year, are sharing in the celebration of another successful year. Our College mission of having ‘Two Worlds in One’ is indicative in the results attained for 2016. 100% pass rate for Matric Independent Examinations Board (IEB) finals, Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) Matric AS and A level, Gr 11 AS Level, Gr 10 IGCSE and Gr 6

Our philosophy is ‘To make a difference in the lives of our students.’ Schools are often judged on the number of A symbols achieved, and this certainly plays an important role in choices, however, I would like to mention those who achieved exceptionally well in the lower end of the academic scale. In 2016 we had 8 students who improved their marks in their finals by 2 symbols. These were students who were struggling, and passed with Bachelor Degree passes. True grit and Ashton H.S.C.C. A SURPRISE VISIT BY THE PRESIDENT on a Charm Offensive

P

RESIDENT JACOB ZUMA paid an unexpected visit to KwaDukuza last Sunday to attend the ANC’s 105th birthday anniversary celebrations much to the delight of many in attendance.

Speaking to the excited crowd of party supporters at the KwaDukuza Recreation Grounds, Zuma committed to ending the issues

that were behind some of the violent election protests last year. He also vowed to remove councillors who are not wanted by their communities, those who had resorted to gate keeping, manipulation, intimidation and nepotism to hang on to power and influence in the region. He made a strong case for unity in the ANC going forward.

TRASH TO TREASURE BEING CREATIVE, WHILE STAYING ‘GREEN’ CONSCIOUS

W

e have all heard the term ‘GO-GREEN’, but how many of us realise how important it is to take that term, and turn it into a reality? In South Africa, we use way over 42 million cubic metres of waste every year, roughly 54,425 tonnes per day. Which makes us the 15th highest rate in the world. Never mind the 5 million cubic metres of hazardous waste that we produce every year, too. A frightening statistic released by the World Bank, is that only 1% of the globes waste gets recycled. TO BREAK IT DOWN: 46% of the world’s solid waste is organic material, with 17% being paper, 10% plastic, 5% glass and 4% metal. This means that 59% ends up in landfills and the rest is dumped.

When these items are dumped, the estimated decomposition rate for some is: • Foamed plastic cups: 50 years • Plastic beverage holder: 400 years • Disposable diapers: 450 year • Plastic bottle: 450 years • Fishing line: 600 years. • Glass bottle 1 million years • Aluminium can: 80-200 years

So, everything you throw in the trash, besides the organic materials, will take longer to decompose, than the years you have to live. Pretty scary fact. On the bright side, you can take the trash you would normally throw away, and repurpose them into works of art, that have a new function. HERE ARE SOME EASY DIY EXAMPLES: 1. Cardboard boxes can easily be transformed into something new. Why not make a toilet roll holder for your bathroom? All you need is some thick yarn, glue and some fabric that can be found at a haberdashery. Why not take it one step further, and use an old shirt for material? 2. What about those old garden brooms? Surely you cannot turn them into anything useful? Think again! You can turn them into amazing little desk organisers. All you need is some scrap wood to make a little box, and the ends of the garden broom glued to the inside of that box. The bristles become pen and pencil holders!

3. Have some old wooden boxes? Or pallets that you could convert into said wooden boxes? Guess what, they make really awesome, and eclectic shelves! Add them to a feature wall! 4. Fan of Tic Tacs? Keep losing your hair clips? Well, instead of throwing away the Tic Tac container, why not give it a makeover, and keep your clips in there? 5. Imagine if everyone had to keep throwing away old or rusted colanders! Now, you can save the environment, as well as provide a bed for flora to grow! You can turn your old colander into a hanging plant! 6. We all know coffee addicts! Again, with your old coffee tins, you can create really cute pot plant containers. Peel off the label, give it a coat of paint, and HEY PRESTO! Or, you can use them as herb planters that you can hang off of a piece of wood outside. 7. We all use tins. The tins that house your tomato and onion mix for your bolognaise, can also be used as really beautiful patio lanterns! They just need the label taken off, a decorative paint detail, some holes for the light to escape through, and a t-light. 8. That Coca-Cola can you just drank out of, can be converted into beautiful wall art! All you need is a sharp blade to cut shapes out, and then you can assemble them onto canvas. 9. Last but not least, why not take your old CD’s and turn them into stunning mosaic tiles! All you need is a spark of creativity, and the possibilities become endless. Let’s make this year, a year of being ‘consciously’ green!

INDOOR GARDENING TIPS Indoor gardens are going to be popular in 2017. If you are interested in creating your own natural plant atrium at home here are some tips: 1. Position your plants carefully. This involves a little trial and error. Always look for the best possible spots in the house for each plant. This may take some time after trying different locations but you will know when you have found the best spot. 2. Recreate a forest floor: This may seem like an inappropriate place for an indoor plant but due to the fact that most indoor plants originate in tropical and subtropical regions (including equatorial forests) you will find that they actually thrive in dim environments. Hint Light filtering through a net curtain works wonders for indoor plants. 3. North facing sun- loving plants: Certain indoor plants thrive off of natural sunlight. For these plants it is best to place them on a windowsill facing north or north-east. It is important to ensure that you check the soil moisture levels as well as the leaves- to ensure they are not getting burned. Hint: At the slightest sign of withering, move the plant towards the center of the room. 4. Bathroom plants: Vaporous rooms like bathrooms are amazing places for ferns and other plants that thrive off of moisture. The bathroom is ideal due to the regular doses of mist! 5. Water bottom up: Watering plants from the bottom up means that you need to stand them in a dish and fill the dish with water. This will ensure that you are not flooding the plant by directly pouring straight onto the plant. This also ensures that the plant’s roots are reached. Note: The delicate plants (such as

Fuchsias) are known to thrive on this method. Hint: All pots need to have holes in the bottom for the water to be absorbed. 6. Stay away from draughts: Apart from the heat and cold, another element that needs to be avoided is wind! In addition to this, it is important to avoid placing your plants in areas that are close to heat or air-conditioned outlets. 7. Overwatering: Do not do it! It is important to only water your plants when the soil mix feels dry to the touch. Feeding the plant too much water often causes the plant to die. Hint: Check the moisture by pushing your finger into the soil. If it comes out without a trace of soil on it- start watering. Note: Summertime often begs for slightly more watering. 8. Misting: Almost all indoor plants benefit from the occasional misting of water. Note: Water mist be at room temperature and with the use of a spray bottle (or atomizer). Misting can be extremely beneficial if your room is centrally heated or air-conditioned as this causes plants to dry out. 9. Feeding with fertilizer: Your plants love to be fed with small amounts of fertilizer. Hint: Use liquid fertilizer every two to four weeks. Check the label for dosage and never exceed. 10. Ice cubes: An efficient way of watering your plants directly and at a steady rate is using ice cubes. Place a couple on top of the soil and simply leave them to melt.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT BENEFITS OF SHUTTERS

HOMEGROWN

Research has revealed that shutters are the most energy efficient window coverings. So as we continue to help the environment, think about updating your home with shutters. 'One of the most energy efficient window coverings on the market, shutters will not only protect you from excessive heat and glare in the summer but they'll also help save energy, keeping a property warmer in the winter months, whilst helping to reduce expensive heating bills,' say the experts.

COMBINATIONS OF NATURAL MATERIALS TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING

Well, first – keep in mind that 2017 is going to be marked by the return to the organic to the natural and the unalterable search of new and functional. So when it comes to a bathroom design the direction will be: super clean colors, seamless lines and practical and simple arrangement of spaces but with the dash of organic coziness and elegance. So let your imagination and creativity flow and turn the functionality of the bathroom into a play of art – a contemporary creation of style.

Last year we undertook a project to show how an aging Ballito home can be transformed with some simple renovation and a lot of creativity. To do this we engaged the services of Chapman Building to assemble what they considered the dream team for this project.

OF THE YEAR FOR 2017 A piece of furniture is a great option in an on trend colour. In this room it's the focal point and it works because the walls are plain and painted in a deep gunmetal grey which adds the perfect backdrop. A bright geometric rug introduces new colours to the space with the odd Greenery shade in some of the shapes to keep the look cohesive. Pick out accessories like vases and botanical plants to carry the look through the rest of the scheme.

a bright refreshing colour that needs delicate handling. Too much and it will overpower everything, so the key word is balance and using it with other accent colours to create a successful and cheerful look.

Street Food Honest, Home-grown Taste and Flavour

ONLINE

JANUARY 2017

People who enjoy good food are enjoying the growing street food trend that is fast becoming popular in our community. It’s no secret that food inflation is taking its toll on the traditional restaurant scene which is fuelling a trend towards street food takeaways. We went in search of some of the most successful street food outlets. Read on to discover some of the most interesting street food options on the North Coast.

Morgan’s Bar & Grill ■ Where are you located? We are situated alongside the M4 between Umhlanga and Ballito in a cozy little suburb called Desainagar. ■ How long have you been operating? This goes back to our very first restaurant,The Cellar, which my family operated for over 10 years. In August 2016, I decided to open doors to the property of my late grandfather, Morgan Maistry, who was the inspiration behind the name of the restaurant. ■ Who are the main people in your store? Our team consists of a Mom, Dad and Son Trio ( Beena Maistry, Cris Maistry, Dean-Henry Maistry respectively), not forgetting the Manageress Jene Botha and Graphic Designer/Photographer Simone Maistry. ■ What inspires your style of cooking? The creation of good food originates straight from the heart and this would be impossible without the power of my Mom, who is the most warm and caring individual and can handle the heat in the kitchen like no other I’ve seen. The meals are prepared fresh and our produce is delivered daily as it is harvested from the farm. The success behind our popular pizzas is the secret homemade recipes - from the pizza base to the pizza sauce! ■ What are your signature dishes? That would have to be the pizzas and curries. The famous bar snack would be the Snack Attack (crumbed

chicken, crumbed calamari and samoosas, served with lemon and tar-tar sauce) and the Spicy Chicken Livers (served with a toasted bun). ■ Price range of your store? We cater to everybody’s pockets and the size of our portions never disappoints! ■ What is your food philosophy? Our philosophy is all about cooking with the utmost love and warmth to provide the greatest food for the soul. If you have great food, everything will fall into place. ■ What is your vision for 2017? To continue to build great relationships with our customers and strive to deliver supreme quality. In February, we will be launching our brand new Slush Cocktails. We will also be hosting Prawn Shack Sundays (eat as many prawns as you want) and our very first Waffle Sundays which will consist of big house brekkies on savory waffles. The year ahead will include many fun events like Milkshake Mondays, Tikka Tuesdays, Wicked Wednesdays, Thai-styled Thursdays and Frieddays!

■ Anything further you would like to add? Join us every Friday for that “Deep House on Deck” feeling and every Saturday for “Karaoke Night”. Follow us on Facebook: Morgan’s Bar and Grill. 12 Park Avenue Desainagar. Call us on: 060 765 7765 or 074 817 9910. Hope to see you there!

N aked Bones food truck

■ Where are you located? We are local Ballito based, but we travel around doing all the events. ■ How long have you been operating? We have been trading for two years now. ■ What inspires your style of cooking? There’s nothing like eating fresh, flamed grilled chicken – our core ingredients are the heroes in our simple fare. ■ What are your signature dishes? For those who know our chicken, the Peri Peri chicken on the bone is the best. ■ Price range of your store? On the food truck we serve any meal from R40 (On the Fly) to R195 (Full Monty). We also sell our raw products online www.nakedbones.co.za. ■ Most popular dish? The Bare Breasts (Chicken strips and chips), I don’t

know if it’s the name or the food that makes it the top seller. ■ What is your food philosophy? U se the best ingredients, loads of variety, and the odd indulgence every now and then. Quote from the Godfather of cooking “Use the best ingredients with minimum fuss for maximum flavour.’’ ■ What is your vision for 2017? T o grow our brand locally by investing in a fixed location in Ballito. To grow our Bone Broth business. ■ Anything further you would like to add? W e have a website through which you can order our products or book us for an event at www.nakedbones. co.za. We have also started to manufacture “Old school” Bone Broth available in Beef and Chicken as well as a Red pepper tomato pasta sauce. 083 5778833 www.nakedbones.co.za

Thula’s Fast Food

■ Where are you located? We are at the Ballito Taxi Rank next to the Sangweni Tourist Information Centre. ■ How long have you been operating? We have been here for three years ■ What inspires your style of cooking? I cook the traditional dishes that my customers love. If my customers are happy, I am happy because good food is like love…it makes the world feel better. ■ What are your signature dishes? We serve traditional Zulu-style curry (beef or bean) which is less spicy than Indian curry and more like a traditional stew. This is served with rice or phuthu (maize meal) fresh

tomato and chilli and coleslaw. We also serve traditionally roasted beef and jeqe. Usu is another popular traditional dish similar to tripe. It is delicious but takes a lot of preparation to perfect it. ■ Price range of your store? Our large curry is R30 and it’s a generous portion with rice or puthu ■ Most popular dish? People love our curries and roasted beef with jeqe ■ What is your vision for the future? I really want to open a restaurant that serves traditional food because there is a huge gap in the market. It’s not only for those who know and love this sort of cooking but people of all cultures

are coming to Thula’s because they say it’s not only delicious food, but it’s also the best value in Ballito! ■ Anything further you would like to add? I am not a formally trained chef but my mother taught me to cook and she emphasized how important it is to do things right. We understand how important food hygiene is, particularly in the street-food environment. I am very strict when it comes to quality, service and hygiene. We use disposable gloves and hair nets and our cooking and service environment is kept spotlessly clean. We keep our prices low but never compromise on food quality.

The New Lexus LS

T

HE new LS is true to Lexus’s more dynamic direction. Each previous generation of the model marked advances in luxury, craftsmanship, performance and safety in their own way, with the most recent version adding much more emotional design and engaging performance to the mix.

To create the new LS, Lexus started afresh, reimagining what a flagship saloon should be, as if it were launching its brand all over again. The goal was not to improve on what has been done before, but to exceed the expectations of luxury customers worldwide. Vehicle Dynamics More than ever before, luxury saloon drivers demand greater handling agility and performance feel, without sacrificing comfort. It’s one of the hardest balances to achieve in a vehicle, yet Lexus’s new GA-L platform meets the challenge. The platform made its debut in the LC coupe and now, with a longer wheelbase, underpins the new LS. Maximising the benefits of a low centre of gravity and weight distribution, the new LS has a wide and low design and is only offered in long wheelbase form. Twin-Turbo V6 and 10-Speed Transmission An all-new 3.5-litre V6 engine has been designed specifically for the new LS, giving both high power and excellent fuel efficiency. Progressive Comfort with Traditional Inspiration New seat designs, including 28way power front seats with heating, cooling and massage functions, exemplify this approach. While making the new LS more of a driver’s

car, Lexus also lavished attention on the rear seats, producing a design that provides seamless continuity between the trim and seatbacks. There are heating, cooling and massage options for rear seat occupants, while powercontrolled rear and front passenger seats are available with a Shiatsu massage function and a raised ottoman leg rest as part of an extensive rear seat luxury package that offers more legroom than in any previous LS. With this optional package, the seat behind the front passenger can be reclined up to 48 degrees, and raised up to 24 degrees to make it easier to exit the vehicle. Because the new LS is lower than previous models, Lexus has equipped the optional air suspension with an access function. Activated when unlocking the car with the smart key, access mode automatically raises the vehicle and opens the seat bolsters to welcome the driver behind the wheel. The Sound Of Silence, Or Great Music Lexus has tuned the LS’s exhaust to convey a more authoritative tone, yet has also designed the cabin for utterly quiet cruising. New sound suppression methods further hush the environment compared to previous LS models. Active Noise Control quiets the cabin by detecting the sound of the engine coming into the vehicle and cancelling certain frequencies, using anti-phase sound from the audio speakers. The serenity of the cabin provides an ideal stage for the standard premium audio system, or the 3D surround-sound Mark Levinson system, featuring in-ceiling array speakers

FATTIES on the North Coast

R

IDING a bicycle is one of the best ways to enjoy scenery and landscapes - what better way to enjoy the beach, coastal forests and lagoons of the pristine North Coast than by bicycle? Julian Bryant, a resident of Prince’s Grant Golf Estate, has started a fat biking operation called Pedal Africa, operating from the Welcome Centre at Prince’s Grant, 30 km North of Salt Rock. The bicycle of choice for these adventures are special bicycles with big tyres for beach and sandy jeep track riding in the local indigenous forests. These bikes are also known as ‘fatties’. The beach between Blythedale and Zinkwazi is amazing to ride upon at low tide - stunning

bays, firm sand, beautiful rock formations and dune vegetation There is a full setup of 12 bikes, apparel for hire & sale, and even some nutritional products to ensure that you have sufficient energy to tackle the approximate 2 hour (15-

18km) route. There are various routes depending on rider skill and experience - although each route features a substantial amount of riding on the beach, which is the main attraction.

The forest sections of the route traverse Elan’s Blythedale Coastal Resort property which features spectacular lookouts over the Umhlotaan lagoon and the Indian Ocean. Permission has been obtained from the local sugar cane farmer adjacent to Prince’s Grant as well as Elan, to cycle on their respective properties. Elan

has also invested cutting trails for fatties and mountain bikes - this includes a wonderful forest single track adjacent to the lagoon and the odd bridge or two as well. Many people enjoyed the experience of riding these fun bicycles in the December holidays and this is an activity for the whole family to enjoy (provided all have a fair level of fitness). Julian guides the tours and ensures that everyone gets as much enjoyment out of the bikes and the route as possible. Riding on the beach at low tide is an experience that will bring a smile to your face. If you are lucky, you will even spot dolphins, whales (during season of course) and the abundant birdlife of the area. After an exhilarating ride on the fat bikes, you can enjoy

fantastic hospitality at the Prince’s Grant Lodge where one can enjoy a good meal & ice cold beverages whilst overlooking the beautiful views across the estate towards the Indian Ocean WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

- Bike rental starts at R350 for 2 hours - The trail fee is R25 per rider - Helmet rental is R25 - Wear trainers and a pair of chamois cycling shorts (if you don’t have, the Pedal Africa Basecamp does sell these) - Bring a bottle for water. Can be provided if you don’t have - Wear sunscreen - Bring your camera phone pedalafrica@gmail.com 0824190578 Facebook: Pedal Africa www.pedalafrica.com
