IFE & STYLE was invited on a tour of the new Ballito Junction shopping centre last week. It is on track for the official opening in March and builders are working overtime to ensure that all is complete by then. There is no doubt that this new centre with all of the added attractions it brings, will lend enormous value to what we often refer to as Brand Ballito. Obviously this will initially draw some action from the Lifestyle Centre and there has been speculation that the impact will be significant.

The Life & Style Bizbook BOOK NOW FOR OUR
As our Radio Life & Style broadcast studio and reception area is based at the Lifestyle Centre many people have asked us whether we have considered moving across to the Junction. It is a proposition that we have considered and we were given a generous opportunity to do just that by the developers of the new centre but after careful consideration we have decided to stay where we are. We have been privy to plans for the Lifestyle Centre going forward and understand how the different propositions will complement each other. The Lifestyle Centre is set to be attractively redeveloped in part to offer a more “Fresh and Fabulous” shopping and entertaining experience that will attract those looking for authenticity and originality. This, together with the convenience of secure free parking and direct access to the major retail outlets like Woolworths, Superspar and Tops, will ensure an exciting future for the centre. While I can’t disclose details of what is planned, I can say that we are confident that what is to come will appeal to the market that Life & Style caters to and we are looking forward to the continued growth and prosperity of Ballito as a region. And Life & Style continues to grow to meet the demand from advertisers who have discovered how effective our combined media platform approach to advertising can be for their business propositions. Some of our major advertisers have had spectacular results from campaigns of late and, because nothing succeeds like success, they are regularly back for more. The Life & Style audio production department is expanding to accommodate this and we are pleased to welcome audio wizard Mvelo Zulu

KDM MUNICIPAL MANAGER APPOINTED KwaDukuza Municipal Council has re-appointment Mr. Nhlanhla Mdakane as Municipal Manager for a period of five years with immediate effect.
K
WADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu welcomed this saying that the appointment would contribute to continued stability and add strategic impetus to the long-term goals of service delivery.
“We firstly wish to congratulate Mr. Mdakane for being re-appointed to the post of Municipal Manager for KwaDukuza Municipality. We have to recognize his contribution towards the stability of our administration and service delivery for the past five years. We hope that he will take into consideration our resolve as Council. It will obviously be a good stride for Council if he agrees to what has been pronounced based on the results of the assessments of all candidates. This step would ensure a stable administration and contribute towards the long term strategic goal of Council in the implementation of key service delivery programmes and projects”, said Mthembu.

ABSA BANK BALLITO UNDER PRESSURE TO PAY BACK THE MONEY
Regional Chairman ANC Youth League, Mfanafuthi Ngcobo and treasurer Thami Mbonambi
W
HILE the circumstances surrounding the historic transfer of an enormous amount of our money to a commercial banking group are currently being investigated, there seems little doubt that some sectors of civil society are becoming increasingly impatient for the money to be returned to the state coffers. That familiar refrain to “pay back the money” is getting louder and last week it came to Ballito when members of the ANC Youth League picketed the Ballito branch of Absa Bank.
The Mail & Guardian Newspaper recently ran the following to illustrate the background to the story. Mega-bank Absa could be forced to pay R2.25 billion to the fiscus for an unlawful apartheidera bank bailout if a preliminary report by the public protector remains unchanged. In Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s suggested remedial action she
also proposes that the president should consider a commission of inquiry into apartheid-era looting of the state. The damning preliminary report, which the Mail & Guardian has seen, has been sent to Absa, the South African Reserve Bank, the treasury and the presidency, as the head of government, which is implicated in the report. Mkhwebane has provisionally found that the government breached the Constitution and the Public Finance Management Act. However, Mkhwebane told the M&G that the report was preliminary and that she was awaiting feedback from the implicated parties – “information which might change the final report drastically”. Absa, describing the preliminary report as containing “several factual and legal inaccuracies”, said it perpetuated an incorrect view that Absa benefited from the bank bailout
in question. In a statement responding to detailed questions, Absa said it was “regrettable” that the interim report had been leaked. The public protector has given implicated parties until Monday to make submissions as to why her report should not change but some have requested an extension, and now have until February 28 to respond. The Regional Chairman of the ANC Youth League, Mfanafuthi Ngcobo, was interviewed on Radio Life & Style following the Ballito picket, during which he expressed their commitment to continue to apply pressure on the bank for the money to be made available for education and other important areas of civil society. He said that the country could expect to see more mass action leading up to the February 28th deadline. He added that they have yet to decide whether Absa Bank Ballito would be targeted again, but he certainly didn’t rule it out. C

A NEW DEAL ON THE CARDS FOR DOCRRA
atepayers Associations in the region are collapsing at an alarming rate. The Durban North and the La Lucia / Umhlanga Ratepayers Associations have suspended operations due to general apathy and the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, DOCRRA, has been busy restructuring the organisation in a bid to prevent the same fate. Going forward, the Association will be more representative of the community is serves. The aim is create a partnership between the public and private sector here that will unlock benefits to all who live here.
There have been behind the scenes discussions with various managing agents and organisations that represent multiple residences to get buy in for support. There has been a great deal of confusion regarding the role of the Urban Improvement Precinct, an organisation funded by commercial property owners to clean, green and secure certain public spaces in the Ballito area. Some people are under the impression that this has taken over the role of the Ratepayers Association but Brian Wright, head of the local UIP, is adamant that this is not, and will never be, the
case. The UIP is keen to work with the Ratepayers Association in matters of common interest – a winning formula that has produced great results in other regions. There are many pressing issues that the Ratepayers Association will be key to resolving in the area this year if there is sufficient public support for the initiative to allow it to operate Back Row – Pam Mills, Angela McCall, Grant Selvan, Silindile Ngcobo, Deon effectively. The SAVE SOUTH AFRICA Campaign
The Save South Africa campaign has become an increasingly relevant voice on behalf of civil society organisations campaigning for better healthcare, better education, and a real commitment to social and economic justice. At the heart of if its campaign, since its formation three months ago, is a call for the removal of President Jacob Zuma. What follows is an edited version of what Save South Africa convenor, SIPHO PITYANA presented to a gathering of journalists in Johannesburg on January 31, 2017.
Loving is not just looking at each other, it's looking in the same direction.
MPAC MEETINGS TO REVIEW THE 2015/2016 ANNUAL REPORT. Notice is hereby given: THAT in terms of Section 129(1) of the Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act 56 of 2003, the Annual Report of KwaDukuza Municipality for the year 2015/2016 will be considered at a Council’s MPAC Committee meetings on each Thursday of the following dates:

P
eople often ask why the Save South Africa campaign has such a strong focus on removing President Jacob Zuma.
The answer is simple: Dislodging Zuma will drive a broad process of reflection and discussion about the quality of new leadership, and begin the real drive to restore integrity. It will be a catalyst for a new beginning. We do not believe that removing Zuma is the silver bullet that puts an end to the rot. But it is the beginning of unravelling the corruption, reversing state capture, restoring the integrity of the state and embarking on a new trajectory – where we have responsible and responsive leaders, and where the interests of the people are put first. And when that has been achieved – whether in December this year, or sooner – Save South Africa and other civil society formations will be there, with a checklist for ethical leadership in hand, to ensure that the post-Zuma era, and the postZuma leadership, contains none of the horror stories of the era we are in now. To ensure that is avoided, it is worth reflecting on exactly what Zuma represents. Clearly, Zuma has no respect for the Constitution – and in fact, is its most dismissive critic. He disregards the courts and institutions of democracy such as Parliament and Chapter 9 institutions. He is the commander-in-chief of state corruption and brazenly and daringly drives the agenda for state capture. He has neither honour nor integrity. And he has absolutely no sense of accountability – in fact, he is a champion of impunity. His leadership is a disaster for the country – he has violated the relationship of trust between the state and the people. And it is critical that we ensure he is
increasingly isolated from the ANC. We believe we have already made
a significant contribution to the isolation of Zuma, and that forces such as the ANC Stalwarts, the MK National Council and members of the ANC NEC, and the Alliance, have gathered strength from the support shown by civil society. We've created a legitimate and principled voice with moral authority – yet not oppositional. This programme of isolation will continue, and we will continue to mobilise civil society to force the ANC to realise that JZ is no longer Number One – he is the Number One Problem. We will also continue to highlight the damage that Zuma is causing to the ANC – not just to its reputation, but to its ability to meet its historical mission of bringing about social and economic justice. Ultimately, we are calling on all South Africans to claim their rights as citizens and stand against corruption, and to restore the integrity of the state. We are calling on citizens to find their voices again, to begin to craft the kind of South Africa we can be proud of, and to speak openly about the attributes we want in our leaders. And we are not resting until our job is done.

THE BEST WAY TO DETOX
STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
I
F you’re reading this article I can almost guarantee that one of your top 2017 resolutions was ‘do a detox.’ And I get it. You may have overindulged in the holidays, eaten or drunk things you shouldn’t have, lazed about and may even have gained a few kgs. So what better way to get back on track than a good ole detox, right?
And when I say detox, I’m taking about juicing, cleansing, fasting or whatever else is trending. The theory goes that if you cut the junk and drastically reduce calories you’ll ‘kickstart’ [shock] your body back into action, get rid of toxins and drop the excess weight quickly. Sounds great right?! Well... in reality, it doesn’t quite work like that. Unfortunately, what often happens is you get really hungry, tired, nauseous and dizzy, have crazy headaches, as well as feel deprived, moody and downright miserable... Then either you fall off the band wagon and binge, or you have amazing willpower, complete the cleanse, feel great but then find yourself right back at square one when you start eating normally again. So why does this happen? Well, for some reason most cleanses have you avoid protein. Which is crazy, because without amino acids your liver and other detox organs can’t do their job properly. No wonder you feel awful! Secondly, the drastic cut in calories tricks your body into thinking that it’s starving which slows down your metabolism. So yes, you lose weight but it’s mainly water loss, muscle loss and a drop in glycogen, your body’s carbohydrate store. Then when you start to eat normally again, any so-called weight loss that you’ve experienced, is going to come right back with possibly a bit extra! So how do I detox properly then? You’re not going to like this, but there is no such thing as a quick fix! For a detox to be effective, it should be holistic. The seven steps to follow are: Eat clean, supplement wisely, hydrate, exercise, sleep, relax and deal with your emotional health. There’s just no getting around it! In order for you to have optimal health, you need to have a healthy lifestyle. So to expand on these 7 steps: Eat clean. Your body detoxes all the time and is able to do so effectively when it receives the right nutrients from your diet. Food is for nourishment. So instead of begrudging healthy food, focus on how to make it delicious and exciting! Make it work for you and your family by trying new healthy recipes, plan and prepare meals, sign up for an organic box scheme, get the kids involved with choosing fruit & veg they like then have them cook with you, watch healthy
cooking shows or how-to YouTube clips. Or if you don’t have time, order your meals pre-made from a healthy food delivery company that does all the hard work for you! Another must is clean out your fridge, freezer and pantry. Make your home a no-junk zone. Rather fill your cupboards with fresh fruit & vegetables, coconut oil, avocado & olives, nuts and seeds, biltong, superfoods, raw food bars or banting-friendly snacks, organic full fat dairy (yoghurt, cheese etc) coconut & almond milk, hormone-free animal products & wild caught fish, organic eggs, fermented foods like sauerkraut, sprouts & fresh herbs and if you love bread then have either sourdough bread (if you can tolerate some gluten) or banting bread, seed biscuits or baked goods made with almond or coconut flour. Supplement wisely. Take liver cleansing and regenerating herbs such as milk thistle and dandelion, colon cleansing and toxin binding agents such as zeolite and psyllium husk and general health supportive nutrients such as magnesium, probiotics, alpha lipoic acid, vitamin C, omega 3 and targeted amino acids. Get some advice from your trusted natural care provider on which supplements are right for you! Hydrate. Drink the purest water you can find. Other beneficial beverages include coconut water, kombucha, kefir, herbal teas, green juices, bone broth & aloe juice. Coffee is best avoided on a detox however, it is a perfectly healthy beverage when incorporated into a clean diet. Just make sure it is organic or very high quality and drunk without sugar! Exercise. Move your body in a way that you love and can sustain. You should not hate exercise, it should be fun and enjoyable and most importantly it should work for you! Think out the box (window shopping, surfing, pole dancing, swimming in the sea, running with your dog, rock climbing, aerial yoga, hiking, dancing in the living room, playing outside with your kids, trampolining, gardening etc. etc. all count!) otherwise seek professional advice from a movement specialist if you aren’t sure what to do! Sleep. It is not a waste of time. It is the key to optimal health so make it a priority. Firstly your bed should be the most comfortable place in your house. Spend money on it and love it! Secondly have a sleep ritual or ‘winding-down’ period to prepare your body for rest e.g. drink a cup of chamomile tea, run a warm lavender bath, read a book, journal, practice yoga or do some gentle stretching. Thirdly (and only if necessary) supplement with calming nutrients and herbs such as magnesium, valerian, cherry extract, glycine, l-theanine, melatonin, Californian poppy etc. Relax. It’s unfortunate that life is now fast-paced, busy & stressful and we’re expected to just keep up without
burning out. The secret then is to find pockets of rest throughout your day where you stop, breathe and calm your nervous system. Yoga & Pilates are also excellent de-stressors if you have the time, however, simply meditating or breathing deep for 5-15mins is all it takes to restore calm in your body. If you find you still are not coping then supplementing with adaptogens is highly recommended e.g. Rhodiola, ashwaghanda, medicinal mushrooms etc. Emotional/mental health. We often neglect what’s going on in our hearts or minds, choosing to bury bad thoughts or feelings instead of dealing with them. However, negative emotions can be just as toxic to the body as artificial chemicals. Therefore, as painful as it is, find ways to deal with this area of your life to experience
true health and freedom. Seek therapy, go to counselling, pray, journal or join a support group. Final Points: Just to clarify, I am actually big fan of juice cleansing and fasting however, I believe these should only be done for short periods of time and only if; A) You know what you’re doing or are under professional supervision B) You live a healthy lifestyle already & have your hormones and stress levels under control C) You are able to properly rest & relax while cleansing Detoxing should be gentle, holistic and work with your body rather than against it! That way, the benefits will be deep seated, long lasting and achieve the results you want.

TOP FASHION TRENDS 201 7 Pink Will Reign Supreme While pink has certainly made its presence known among our favorite beauty products and accessories this year, we're willing to bet that the bubblegum shade will continue to reign supreme in 2017.
Activist Chic Inspired from the Women's March in D.C. Slogan tops with empowering messages are all the rage on the spring 2017 runway. The message is loud and clear: Let your shirt do all the talking this year
Stripes Galore Who doesn't love stripes? Fashion's favorite print is timeless and totally wearable. This year, get ready to see stripes in all sizes and colors on everything from chunky sweaters to knit dresses and oversize shirts. "It" Cases Are the Next "It" Bags Why lug around a heavy tote when you can just carry your handy dandy cell phone? This year, we're all for streamlining our daily essentials—and it seems, so are designers. For spring 2017, Louis Vuitton's Nicolas Ghesquière introduced an iPhone case version of the brand's signature leather bags, while Chloé, Valentino, and Dior sent down mini purses just big enough to hold your beloved device.
Statement Earrings Why mess with success? Statement earrings have been a favorite of the fashion set and partygoers last year, and it seems the trend will continue to dominate in 2017
SHADES OF YELLOW Refreshing and bold, different shades of yellow were seen in the month long carousel catwalk, at the fashion shows. From fizzy sorbet yellow to muted mustard and pastel lime, this colour made a statement across clothing, jewellery and handbags.
Reach for New Heights Don't get us wrong, we love the comfort of slops, but it's time for a new footwear style to take over our shoe closet. For 2017, designers are proposing sky-high platforms, like Proenza Schouler's spotted sandals and Gucci's lofty loafers embellished with studs.
Strong Shoulders This year, get ready to cover up in voluminous sleeves and architectural shoulder pads reminiscent of the '80s. Marking the end of last year's much beloved (and overdone) off-theshoulder silhouette.
3 HAIR TRENDS YOU'LL SEE EVERYWHERE
1
Super Sleek
Break out your flat iron—straight, shiny, and center-parted hair is one of the biggest trends for 2017. But this style only works if your hair looks healthy—not fried. Be sure to mist a heat protectant through your hair before touching it with a straightener.
2 The High Pony
Slick your hair up. All the way up. Done in rumpled texture or stick-straight, the high ponytail adds both an elegance and ease to every ensemble. Bonus: the tighter you secure it, the more lifted your face looks (but maybe pop an Advil or two first).

EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE
S
ince 2012 KwaDukuza Municipality has delivered over 1200 school full uniforms to underprivileged learners from rural schools.
“This is an indication that we have not lost sight of our commitments as government in placing education within our line of work as a local authority responsible for mainly basic service delivery”, said KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu who was speaking at a special uniform hand-over ceremony recently. He used the platform to underline the need to improve the schooling system and described why council is taking action to improve primary education. After taking into consideration the amount of challenges that are facing rural schools and learners in
particular; five years ago, council in its view made the necessary changes in a bid to improve on the standard and quality of education for underprivileged schools. The biggest spirit killer is to see a learner taking to school without shoes. It is in this sense that we see it fitting to assist those who are unable to provide for basic necessities within our local schools. We adopted the programme in 2012, clearly as one of our flagship projects that is making a significant impact on challenges facing youth and vulnerable children. This year alone we are rolling out the programme, targeting 18 schools and 350 learners”, said Mthembu.

LANDMARK 1-2-3 GLORY FOR PEUGEOT
IN THE 2017 DAKAR RALLY
T
HIRTY years after its initial Dakar Rally success in 1987, Peugeot provided another demonstration of its knowhow with an assertive one-two-three finish on this year’s event in South America. Peterhansel/Cottret, the most successful crew in the event’s history,
flew the French tricolour high and proud as they steered their PEUGEOT 3008DKR over this year’s challenging route which included high-altitude running, tougher navigation and appalling weather. The 2017 rally turned out to be a close, dramapacked affair with numerous leader changes and exceptionally small gaps at the order’s sharp end from start to finish.
A NEW RECORD FOR STÉPHANE ‘MONSIEUR DAKAR’ PETERHANSEL
They say 13 is unlucky for some, but Stéphane Peterhansel is unlikely to subscribe to that theory now that he has beaten his own record and taken his personal tally of Dakar Rally wins to 13 in total (six on two wheels, seven on four wheels). Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret produced a near-perfect run this time round to clock up their
seventh success together, allowing the latter to register a new record for co-driver victories.
FAST-LEARNING WORLD CHAMPIONS
Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena demonstrated impressive progress on only their second Dakar Rally outing. In addition to emerging as the fastest crew of the fortnight, they combined shrewd pace management with strong navigational skills. Their chances of victory took a blow on Day 4, however, when an engine issue cost them 26 minutes, proving cruelly decisive in the final reckoning. The Franco-Monegasque pair ended up second overall for the second year running and posted the highest number of fastest stage times (five from 10).
FIRST PODIUM HONOURS ON FOUR WHEELS
After coming seventh overall in 2016, Cyril Despres and David Castera shared the Dakar Rally’s podium celebrations for the first time on four wheels after previously securing five and three bike victories respectively. The crew of the N°307 PEUGEOT 3008DKR also recorded their first fastest time in the car category and even appeared at the top of the provisional leader board on the evening of Day 4 after one of the 2017 event’s most selective stages, hinting that there’s still plenty more to come from the French pair.
A SOLID GOLD DAKAR RECORD
Team Peugeot Total’s one-two-three finish on the 2017 event is the latest in a long list of Dakar Rally successes for the brand. It is PEUGEOT’s sixth overall victory and its second podium lockout from seven participations.
