T

here has recently been a revival of interest in the status of our local ratepayers’ association following two setbacks in quick succession regarding operational limitations of the Urban Improvement Precinct.

For those unfamiliar with local politics, let me explain. The Urban Improvement Precinct concept arrived in Ballito following the success of similar ventures in Durban and Umhlanga where commercial property owners had agreed to financially support it. Essentially the UIP is a privately funded and directed initiative responsible for the cleaning, greening and securing of areas where commercial property owners have exposure. The municipality levies an additional amount from each commercial property and these funds are then used to pay for the services of the UIP to do essentially what the municipality should be doing but isn’t. The UIP has done an excellent job in Ballito, cleaning and securing the beachfront promenade the main access route through Ballito to the beach and the commercial business hub. But their recent request for the municipality to allow after-hours access control in the business park precinct where armed robbers shot and killed a security guard recently, was turned down flat, as was a request to be allowed to regulate the beachfront car guard activities. It is

widely postulated that the illicit drugs trade in the town is closely associated with these activities and tighter regulation would go some way toward combatting the scourge.

the year the ratepayers’ association will be relaunched with an exciting new image and structure that will be truly representative of the interests of its members.

Sadly, the UIP has no statutory power to engage at this level…but the ratepayers association does, which is why it makes sense to bring all of the various civic, charity, religious, security and service bodies in the region into the fold to create a united front that will engage with the municipality to facilitate the will of the people it serves.

Our intention is to create an organisation strong enough to ensure that best practice becomes the order of the day here and that Brand Ballito becomes an icon of what a united social democracy can achieve. I hope you’ll join us!

In a recent radio interview on 88.0fm, the Voice of Ballito, Mayor Ricardo Mthembu reiterated the municipality’s intention to engage more meaningfully with the ratepayers’ association to achieve these things, to the benefit of all concerned. This marks a welcome departure from the municipality’s previous position and is a development that should be embraced in the building of Brand Ballito. As Chairman of the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, I have experienced the frustration of keeping the association going with many people believing that they would be better served by their various homeowners associations, bodies corporate and UIP. But a new committee has been busy redesigning the look and feel of the association and has for a while been engaging with stakeholders behind the scenes, to canvass input and commitment going forward. This process continues.

REGGIO INSPIRED THINKING AT ASHTON JUNIOR COLLEGE FLICK HOLMES - HEAD - JUNIOR COLLEGE

A

S schools, we all protect and uphold our founding ethos and principles. We also continually strive for academic excellence, find ways to enrich the curriculum and make learning relevant in our fast changing world. Learning how to think creatively is a basic skill which all our students are going to need but globally, is in danger of being side-lined and replaced with more assessment tasks and paper–based learning. In the Junior College at Ashton this year, we have been exploring ways to ensure creativity is not lost in the classroom.

connection between art and pedagogy. It starts with the premise that all children are able to learn through the development of thinking, questioning, planning and collaborating. As citizens of the future, it is encumbent on teachers and parents to recognize the unique-ness of children, to understand they do not all learn the same way and different timing should be respected. We also recognize all children have different learning styles and we are excited at

the prospect of our students having the opportunity to be supported as persistent, inquisitive beings. We are working tirelessly to encourage ‘grit’ in our children where we prepare the child for the path, rather than prepare the path for the child. With this in mind, the new Intersen block for Grade 4-7 has been beautifully designed and constructed to incorporate an adjoining creative space onto each classroom. It is our vision that these spaces will be where our students will enjoy project-based, active learning as the ‘researcher’ and given the opportunity to construct his/her own knowledge. Our creative studios will also allow children to recognise that that there are many paths that lead to understanding. It is our long-term goal to have a teacher assistant in every studio to support this philosophy.

A number of staff and I have been travelling to Johannesburg during the course of the year, to attend workshops and lectures on the Reggio Emelia approach to learning. The Reggio approach is an educational philosophy focused on pre-school and primary education. It was developed by an Italian teacher, Louis Malaguzzi who believed children expressed themselves through ‘a hundred languages’ which includes the arts, music and drama. He saw the role of the teacher to provide students with various avenues for constructing, navigating and developing their thinking, resulting in developmentally appropriate collaboration. This approach also allows children to view mistakes as an opportunity to learn.

Physicist and clergyman William Pollard said it best: ‘Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change, will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable.’

In the Reggio approach there is a strong

Not All Supplements Are Created Equal STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

N

utritional supplements are not regulated in the same way as pharmaceuticals.

Therefore transparency and education is key, allow me to explain why I say this. You want to be sure that you are getting what you pay for, and that you trust your brand of choice, especially in light of the fact that we buy nutritional supplements to experience better health! Here are some basic guidelines to help you make a wise decision:

Full Label Disclosure

The supplement’s label should tell you everything you need to know, including: - The product ingredients - The product potency (eg mcgs, mgs, iu’s etc) - The source of the nutrient what form it is in). - Directions for use: how much to take to

get the label potency? - A listing of the fillers, binders, and excipients or any other potential allergic substances. - A code date. - Any warnings or cautions. - Manufactured by or manufactured for.

Tablet Processing

Are the fillers, binders, excipients and coatings natural? Many companies use cheap ingredients that may affect how the tablet will break down. Natural vs. Synthetic: The word natural can be misleading. A good example of this is with vitamin E. A manufacturer can use a blend of 10% natural E and 90% synthetic E and still be able to label the product as natural vitamin E. It is important for manufacturers to list the chemical name. Natural vitamin E is listed as d-alpha tocopherol, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate or d-alpha tocopheryl succinate. All synthetic E products are listed with dl before the alpha.

Cost

If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. The same goes for the way a product looks. Unfortunately, the vast majority of nutraceutical manufacturers put more effort into marketing and fancy labels, than creating a product of quality.

- 5-HTP is better than

L-tryptophan if you wish to produce more serotonin in the brain. - Calcium citrate is better absorbed than calcium carbonate. - Omega 3 fats from fish oil are absorbed in a superior manner to those from a seaweed or flaxseed source. - Folic acid should always be taken with B12 since they work together in stimulating neurological pathways and homocystine detoxification. Also folic acid supplementation can hide the symptoms of B12 deficiency. Methylcobalamin is a more bio-available form of vitamin B12 than cyanocobalamin.

COLLIN MBONGWA Former professional rugby player, Collin Mbongwa took his love for sports, passion for giving back and helping people and turned it into a career. General personal training Team sport specific training Nutritional advice

The list goes on, but speak to your trusted healthcare provider for clarification on other nutrients you may be taking.

Conclusion

Nutritional supplements can be a wonderful way to optimise one’s health, however, we need to get smart about what we are buying. Perhaps we need to start being more discerning when it comes to selecting nutrients based on what is being advertised as the latest and greatest.

Bio-availability

Another essential way to assess the quality of your supplements is to check if the vitamins and minerals are in the most biologically active and absorbable forms. For example:

CHANGE IN THE WEATHER BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY

W

INTER is on the wane and with the welcome change to the weather comes a seasonal shift in style.

Top international stylists are forecasting a move away from the Avant-garde colours of the past months to a more subtle statement.

The frosty grey-blondes and whimsical pastels that reflected the winter world in shades of glacier grey, toasted almond and cool aquamarine are tipped to melt away with the winter snow. And the vibrant sunset hues of orange and yellow, together with the energising splashes of hot pink and Kelly green, that brightened up the dreary winter days are expected to be replaced by warm, earthy hues that echo the natural palette of spring and summer. The popular dramatic ‘ombre’ is being elbowed aside for the less obvious colour gradation of the ‘sombre’ look. But while hair colours and shapes may be set to provide a more muted background, there will still be plenty of opportunity to make your mark on the style scene. There is a

renewed focus on hair texture, so if you have a strong curl, now is the time to embrace and enhance it with the help of a diffuser. If you don’t have a natural curl, curling rods offer an easy way to achieve a great look. Something a little different that is predicted to be all the rage this season is mermaid waves, which are created by sleeping overnight in braided hair. If you can’t wait that long, you can speed up the process by spritzing your braids with hairspray before drying them off with a hair dryer. For those who still favour long, straight tresses, sweeping your hair off your face in a sleek pony tail will ensure you are comfortable while still in vogue. For those who still want to make a strong individual statement, a neat, straight side or middle parting adds a sharp edge and character to hair of any length. And finally, there will be a whole new world of accessorising fun to explore with new ranges of hair ornaments to add that final touch of class or bring a bit of spunky pizzazz to your style. Chunky, bright, gold and bold, the only limit will be your imagination! Spring and summer are the playful seasons of the year; this year, dare to be playful with your hair!

Happy styling!

WILLOW STREAM SPA REJUVINATES AND RELAXES AT FAIRMONT ZIMBALI RESORT - One of a kind spa experience inspired by unspoiled tropical beauty, indigenous ingredients and traditions of natural healers. The Fairmont Zimbali Resort, home to Willow Stream Spa, is situated in one of three coastal forest estates in the world, a 700-hectare protected tropical paradise. Each Willow Stream Spa is designed to reflect the beauty and ambiance of its location. At the Fairmont Zimbali Resort, for example, the beauty of South Africa is brought inside with palettes of rich dark wood, soft gold, and energizing shades of orange – reminiscent of the spectacular dawn sunrise. Locally produced artwork graces the walls, stools offer casual seating, tiled stone with sienna and earth tone hues represent the rich soil and colourful countryside, and water features give a nod to the ocean-side location. Soft aromatherapy fills the air and senses. The spa offers a haven to re-energize, relax and rejuvenate. A self-contained nail salon not only provides manicures and pedicures but also serves as an ideal social gathering place. For treatments, guests are directed to roomy change rooms where they can unwind, enjoy a Vichy shower or steam, and relax in a private lounge. The men’s area is similar to a den with masculine colours and reading material, whilst the women’s lounge, sunny and serene, has cosy chairs and magazines. Always available in the lounges are muffins or sweet breads, fresh fruit, and antioxidant “cocktails” that are full of vitamins and nutrients. Drinks like garden mint, grated ginger and freshly squeezed lemon juice, or fresh carrot juice with lime, add to the sense of pampering and overall feeling of wellness and help keep guests hydrated. The nine spacious treatment rooms feature a soothing décor of sandstone, soft cream, and copper.

Traditional Zulu baskets, hand carved wooden trays, and local art provide a sense of location. Crisp white linens with fluffy oversized duvets wrap the beds, while essential oils soothe the senses. Beautiful orange and yellow butterflies, hand-beaded and benefiting the local Zulu village charities, lay as if they have gently landed on the bed. Three of the treatment areas are oversized suites, completely self-contained with a marble steam shower for two, jetted bath to share, and private washroom. Ideal for couples, the suites can be used for massages, or treatments can be mixed and matched. Another treatment area provides a wet room for solo spa goers with a large private shower and spacious jetted soaker for mineral baths, and there is also a specialty suite where bridal or pampering parties can have their makeup, hair and manicures done together. After a treatment, guests can extend their spa experience and relax in the Great Room. An airy oasis, it has a double-vaulted ceiling with sheer drapes that cascade and circle each chair to provide a dreamy cocoon of privacy.

ARE YOU READY FOR NICKY ALMEIDA Glowing skin, great hair, healthy, toned bodies with near perfect proportions… We all want them. It’s a sign of health, self-respect, confidence and positive self-esteem. The kinds of things that add to your “appeal factor”.

S

ummer is fast approaching and it has become the topic of many discussions again. It’s all about being health and fitness conscious and working on improving our health and physique. Skin products, beauty and aesthetic treatments, the next weight loss diet or device, organic foods, health oils, vitamins, supplements, energy boosters… The choices are endless. It can become quite confusing and daunting to figure out which products would actually be beneficial to you.

Who needs confusion as an added stress in our modern day lifestyle? No thank you. That’s why we would like to give you our top 5 tips for taking care of yourself this summer…. And actually – all year round. The key is to keep things simple. To know your body and how it reacts. And not to put your mind and body through too much stress.

1.Feed your body

• Eat three to five moderately sized, balanced

meals per day… Breakfast, lunch and dinner, with healthy snacks in between. Maybe you think you don’t need it, but the scientific truth is that you do. It’s not only about providing your body with the nutrients it needs, but if you’re not eating 3-5 healthy meals per day you are at risk of slowing down your body’s metabolism. That leads to weight gain. • Eat healthy snacks in-between meals. Include organic greens, fruits and vegetables. Cut down on the sugars. • Top up with vitamins and supplements. • Hydrate – regularly with at least 2L of water a day. • Keep your metabolism going.

Our recommendation: Visit a dietician and get

a Nutritional Assessment and Personalised Meal Plan. Megan Carlsson, the Dietician at the I Move Fitness High Performance Centre, is a good choice. You can also help you earn some points towards your Discovery Vitality Status. Quality nutritional Supplements are also available at the IMF Gym Supplement Store at Warne House in Ballito.

2.Protect your skin

• You only have one skin, and your skin is a

reflection of your body’s inner health. Taking good care of your skin is something you will thank yourself for later in life. Wear broad spectrum sunscreens and be conscious of the amount of sun you expose your skin to. If you haven’t been in the sun for a while, ease your skin into getting used to the sun again. 15mins at a time is plenty.

SUMMER?

• Feed your skin. Just like having a healthy diet

will improve the condition of your skin after time, you can also feed your skin with nutrients found in certain skincare products. • Ingredients to look out for: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Plant Extract Anti-oxidants, Caffeine and Peptides. Natural occurring acids such as Glycolic Acid, Lactobionic Acid, Salicilic Acid and Kojic Acid are good too, as are Vitamin A (and the derivative Retinol), but you need to be careful with these. They should be used under medical supervision. • Looking to reverse the signs of sun damage , we recommend the light Glycolic Acid Chemical Peel • For fine lines and wrinkles we recommend Botox • Skin tightening and firming with the Thermage non-surgical facelift is a brilliant option to reverse signs of aging.

Our recommendation: Heliocare broad

spectrum sunscreen or Obagi broad spectrum sunscreen containing Vitamin C. Combine that with a good Hydrating face cream such as NeoStrata® Ultra Daytime Smoothing Cream or an Intense Anti-aging day face cream such as NeoStrata® Matrix Support SPF30 says Dr Ian Gardner & Pierre Spies, owner of Face & Body Ballito.

Body Sculpting:

Sculpt your body and kick-start your weight loss by freezing those resistant fat deposits with Cool Sculpting. Commonly referred to as ‘Fat Freezing’, this process is called Cryolipolysis. As fat cells are more susceptible to extreme cold they can be selectively and permanently destroyed. Each selected area takes approximately 20 minutes and as this procedure is noninvasive, patients can return to normal activities immediately, the perfect treatment for a lunchbreak and definitely an option for patients who don’t want to go the liposuction route, its safe an effective for targeted fat areas. @ Face & Body Ballito.

two Biokineticists to choose from, Dwain Sweigers and Nic Acampora, as well as one of Durban’s top Physiotherapists, Sumeshen Moodley, and various Personal Trainers to ensure that achieving your goals will be injury free.

4.Rest

• Sleep. Recover. Relax. Repeat • It’s simple… Sleep at least 7 – 8 hours per night. • Give your body time to recover from high intensity training or sports events. • Take time off for yourself. Don’t wear your body down. This can be difficult, but strive towards it as much as realistically possible. The mind, body and soul all need rest.

Our recommendation:

Besides the obvious stated above, why not book a massage with Stacey Whitehead, Sports Massage Therapist, at the IMF Gym High Performance Centre?

5.Balance that is the key to everything!

3.Keep a general fitness

• Exercise at least 3 times

Richmond Plumbing are superb. Ecopure water filters have supplied an under counter unit for the kitchen that incorporates active ceramic spheres to kill bacteria and effectively remove contaminants – a must for every home. Alfie from Top Granite did a super white Ceasarstone top and splashback on the bathroom vanity which the basins are mounted on and Sugar Plum interiors are custom fitting a frameless glass shower wall that will finish off the bathroom beautifully. Hopefully we will be able to feature the completed work in our next issue. We have experimented with the finishes on two feature walls that took a bit of trial and error before the desired effect was achieved – in one case it was a textured finish and in another it was a distressed tongue and groove wooden

character feature that took a lot of sanding and application. Both now look really good. Ohms Electrical are still installing the lighting, much of which is powered by wiring concealed in custombuilt powder coated trunking suspended beneath the exposed rafters. The final effect should be awesome. The use of LED lighting throughout will significantly decrease electricity usage going forward and this is a change we recommend to any homeowner. The price of electricity is set to increase significantly in the years to come. Chat to Jacques at Global Light Fittings in Ballito for some innovative ideas in this regard. Next week – the grand reveal… watch this space!

THE CUPCAKE ANGELS

RED SOCK FRIDAY

W

earing red socks and warm smiles, every Friday morning at 5am a group of Ballito runners and walkers from various running clubs gathers at the Clark Bay boardwalk in front of Hops on the Ballito beachfront united by a common goal (and a mutual love of the postrun coffee and muffins that are a regular fixture).

This is the Ballito chapter of Red Sock Friday: an international movement dedicated to making a difference, inspiring others and being inspired, staying passionate and positive, remembering friends and expressing yourself! Welcoming runners and walkers of all abilities and affiliations, the Ballito offshoot is organised by Dave and Candice Flood of the SportsZone Running Co: stockists of the official “ShoOops” Red Socks with all proceeds going towards charity. The last Friday of every month is reserved for a different local cause, and on Friday 30 September the group got together to support a charity drive for the children of Moses Makhoba - the Enforce security officer and single-father who was shot and killed in Ballito a few weeks ago. Inspired by the compassion of Crawford North

Coast pupils Courtney Fitchat and Deryn Burns who set up a fundraising initiative for Moses’s children, Ballito’s Red Sock runners banded together. Every runner brought a packet of nonCandice Flood of the perishable food items to SportsZone Running Co & the drop-off point at Hops Courtney Fitchat & Deryn Burns and a huge pile of food awaited Courtney and Deryn when they arrived to collect it. What a fantastic way to kick off a Friday! Join the movement, keep active, and help make a difference... For more info on Red Sock Friday Ballito, call the SportsZone Running Co. on 032 586 0246, pop in to their shop at the Ballito Junction, or meet the group on Fridays at 5am outside Hops.

CAID PONTUS- LIFE & STYLE

S

leep is an extremely important facet to any humans’ life. It plays a crucial role in your physical health, and overall wellbeing.

Did you know that sleep is involved in the healing repair of your heart and blood vessels? Your mind is actually very busy when you are sleeping. Did you know that you strengthen memories or skills that you learned while you were awake? A good sleep routine is the key to alleviating most health issues. A good routine after waking up is also just as beneficial! You know that clichéd scene where a person wakes up from a deep sleep, and has a good stretch? I wonder if most of you know just how important it is to do this. I have a challenge for you, I want you to cancel your snooze button, and use those extra minutes to stretch before getting ready for the day at hand. Give yourself ten minutes if you can. FIRSTLY, try the upward stretch. Sit on the floor, preferably on a carpet or yoga mat, and raise your hands towards the sky. This is a great way of getting the blood flowing. Remember to elongate your spine and feel the stretch in your rib cage. SECONDLY, it’s the neck and shoulders turn. This really helps alleviate any tension you may have built up whilst sleeping. To stretch the right side of your neck, turn your left ear over your left shoulder, and hold it there for roughly 20 seconds. Once you have done this on both sides, give your shoulders a good roll backwards and then forwards. THIRDLY, if you suffer from lower back pain, a spinal twist may just be what you have been looking for. Lie on your back, turn your knees to the right side of your body, and have your head face towards the left, with arms outstretched. Don’t force your body to twist if it doesn’t want to. Take it slow. FOURTH, we have quad stretches. These we do by lying on our side, and pulling our legs behind us by our foot. Try squeezing your butt while in this position to maximize the stretch of your quad. Hardly anybody ever stretches these muscles, and it is so important! LASTLY, we have our hamstrings. Lying on your back, raise your left leg towards the ceiling, perpendicular to your body. Remember to point your toes outwards (towards you). Most importantly, keep your hips centred and flat against the carpet or met. After stretching, drink a big glass of water, eat food that contains tyrosine (eggs, yoghurt, almonds) and conquer the day!

HYUNDAI REVEALS HIGHPERFORMANCE N CONCEPT AT PARIS MOTOR SHOW

H

yundai Motor has unleashed its latest high-performance N concept car with the world premiere of the RN30 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show on 29 September.

A performance i30N model that will benefit from technologies introduced in the RN30 concept, will become available to the public next year, making Hyundai’s passion for high-performance driving accessible to everyone.

Specialized technologies for thrilling performance The RN30 features specialized high-performance technologies to increase excitement for drivers and enable them to tame the most challenging of race tracks. Revmatching encourages spirited driving by quickly and accurately revising the engine’s speed whenever the driver shifts gear in sport mode. The Electronic Variable Exhaust system provides a surge of aural pleasure by emitting a strong exhaust sound consistent with the visceral sensations produced by the rapid acceleration. Other technologies are aimed at enhancing safety and control. The electronic limited-slip differential system (eLSD) measures the driving force of the tyres to ensure that each wheel receives sufficient torque. This helps to prevent skidding and ensures fast, precise cornering when navigating high-speed curves.

Interior optimized for performance driving During the interior design process, RN30 designers and racing experts from Hyundai Motorsport (HMSG) worked together closely to ensure drivers can focus attention exclusively on the car and the road. A bucket seat, which perfectly fits the driver’s body and an integrated roll cage, which increases the vehicle body strength, support and protect the driver in all situations. RN30 is the latest in a succession of highperformance sports concepts that point towards the future of N production models, furthering the ‘N’ model characteristics first seen in the Hyundai N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo, RM15 and RM16 concepts. All N models are developed by passionate experts at Namyang, the heart of Hyundai Motor’s global R&D network, and then pushed to their limits during testing at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife, regarded as the world’s most challenging race track. The N logo represents the chicane of a race track – where the balance of cars is proven rigorously.

Merc Goes Electric

M

ercedes-Benz will soon unveil its new product brand for electric mobility at the Paris Motor Show: EQ. The name EQ stands for “Electric Intelligence” and is derived from the Mercedes-Benz brand values of “Emotion and Intelligence”.

The new brand encompasses all key aspects for customer-focused electric mobility and extends beyond the vehicle itself. The first series-produced EQ model will be launched in the SUV segment before the end of this decade. Mercedes-Benz already offers a suitable charging infrastructure for electric cars, including a wallbox as a fast-charging station for the home, the free app “Charge&Pay” for convenient recharging at public charging stations as well as – for home-owners and businesses – stationary energy storage units for the power generated by photovoltaic or solar systems. All these products and services will in future be bundled under EQ. In this way, Mercedes Benz is creating a consistent and clear image for sustainable products and services with the star. Generation EQ – new vehicle generation and distinct design language With the “Generation EQ” to be unveiled in Paris, Mercedes Benz is demonstrating that attractive and high-performing electric cars will soon dominate the streetscape. With the looks of a sporty SUV coupé, the “Generation EQ” is the trailblazer of a completely new generation of vehicles with battery-electric drives.

Two electric motors on the front and rear axles produce a total output of up to 300 kW, depending on configuration. In combination with the intelligent operating strategy from Mercedes-Benz, the “Generation EQ” has a range of up to 500 kilometres. Featuring a completely new design, the battery-electric models will have their own distinctive “electro-aesthetic” styling. This will include a new shape of radiator grille together with a new light signature. The interior, too, comes with the new “electro-aesthetic”. The all-new control and display concept for “Generation EQ” dispenses with traditional switches, except for the electric seat adjustment typical of Mercedes. In the driver-oriented cockpit, the focus is on simple, touch-based control. The digital user experience differentiates the “Generation EQ” from the familiar control logic of today’s vehicles, while giving a peek into the future of user interaction at Mercedes Benz.
