P

EOPLE often ask me why we don’t extend our radio signal further because 88.0FM is now a really popular station. The answer is that our ICASA issued broadcast licences only allow local reach on FM. But our digital signal is carried worldwide and our listenership is constantly growing as more and more people visiting our region discover the awesome mix of music and local info that is The Voice of Ballito.

Statistically most radio listeners worldwide are now streaming their favourite stations on their cell phones, tablets and computers via apps like Tunein or, as in our case, dedicated apps like Life&Style FM available free on the Play Store or App Store. These apps use a miniscule amount of data due to their sophisticated algorithms and the companionship of your favourite radio station and personalities is always available to you whether you are connected to a Wi-Fi network or using mobile data. This makes a breeze of dull, repetitive chores or exercise routines or any other pursuit that would otherwise be rather lonely. It also makes for great background entertainment in a social gathering. And for those who love listening

to 88.0FM in their vehicles while they are out and about, it’s never been easier to link your phone to your in-car entertainment system via USB cable or direct via Bluetooth - so you need never lose our signal on the long haul again. If you need help in this regard, please call us on any of the numbers listed below, and we will quickly get you set up to receive the best music on the planet along with all of the local news, views and interviews that you love. And there is a growing mountain of evidence pointing to the fact that advertising on Radio Life & Style is the most effective local medium available – by far! Radio advertising has always been a winner but until recently, it has been way too expensive for local business. Now, with the advent of Ballito’s first local commercial radio station, that has changed. Local businesses taking advantage of the affordable advertising packages available to them combining the power of radio with the immediacy of print and internet under the Life & Style banner, have delivered impressive results. We’ll be happy to share this with you if you would like to investigate how we can do the same for your business too. Mayor Ricardo Mthembu explained on air last week, there is serious intent now from both local and central government to develope this region into an economic powerhouse for the province. This means that there are exciting times ahead and we are here to help you to navigate and explore what’s coming. I can assure you that the power of the Life & Style media brand will play a hugely important role in our march towards City status…oh, yes… that’s definitely on the cards according to the Mayor. And while some may lament the passing of the sleepy little village, the reality is that the emerging local economy is attracting new and exciting opportunities that will hopefully add great value to Brand Ballito to the benefit of all of us. EXCITING GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT & APPOINTMENTS AT ASHTON

I

T is with great excitement that we share the latest news of growth, development and new appointments at Ashton International College.

In 2009 Mr André Buys purchased Seaforth College and slowly the wheels started turning as the Ashton brand made its way into our community. In January 2010 the official opening was celebrated and since then our Ashton family has grown in leaps and bounds. We have welcomed new staff members, students and parents to the Ballito Campus and our numbers have increased from 456 to 1250 students with the numbers even a little higher for 2017. Ashton is a growing independent school and we will always uphold our founding ethos and principles. Mr Buys’ passion for education has seen the construction of 58 new classrooms, the beautiful state of the art Grace Hall, the unique Grace Wing for students on the autism spectrum, and the development of the new sports campus. A total of 12 000 square metres has been constructed and equipped in this very short space of time. The new Junior College Intersen Phase block is nearing completion, and this will see yet another of his visions coming to fruition. His desire to make learning an exciting prospect for all students, irrespective of where their strength lies, sees the introduction of the Reggio Amelia concept of learning.

This entails new ways of enriching the curriculum and make learning relevant in the fast changing world. With this continuous growth, it gives us great pleasure to announce the promotion of Mr Joe Erasmus as Managing Director of the Ashton International Colleges Group, comprising the Ballito and Benoni Campuses. Mrs Jenny van Buuren has been appointed as Head of the Senior College, whilst Mr Mark Charlesworth will take up the position of Senior College Head of Academics. As Chairman of the Ashton Group, Mr André Buys will be focussing on the future development of the Ashton Ballito campus. The long awaited construction of the Astra turf will begin in 2017 as well as new tennis courts. The second phase of the Intersen buildings which include a new multi-

Mr Mark Charlesworth, Mr Joe Erasmus, Mr André Buys & Mrs Jenny van Buuren purpose hall and the construction of additional classrooms in the Foundation Phase will also commence. We will also be welcoming a number of new teaching staff to both the Senior and Junior Colleges in 2017 to enhance the learning experience at Ashton, which includes the introduction of Engineering Graphic Design (EGD) on the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) Curriculum and Music on

the CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) Curriculum in the SeniorCollege. The matric students of 2016 commenced their final examinations – to our own matrics and all the other students we would like to share our Ashton Motto – HSCC (Heart, Spirit, Character and Courage)

HE CRAWFORD COLLEGE NORTH COAST art community shared this event with a passionate celebration of the visual arts, which in turn included some rocking musical performances in the adjoining amphitheatre.

VISUAL ART EXPO 2016 Specialist Visual Arts teacher Mrs Tilly de Gabriele praised the students’ exhibition of conceptual art as only a beginning of their artistic journeys. The theme of movement and migration ran as a common thread through many of the art students’ themes as they investigated, created and composed dynamic art-works for this their final IEB practical assessment. O

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and since we are made up of a team of women at Lifestyle Health, this is a topic that concerns us and we wanted to highlight nutrients that may help towards preventing this very serious disease.

The five nutrients listed below comprise a foundational supplement plan for just about every woman who wants to reduce her odds of getting breast cancer. Each of the five supplements helps reduce cancer risk through five key pathways…

1.Boosting immune system function. 2.Reducing inflammation. 3.Improving insulin sensitivity. 4.Supporting digestion and detoxification. 5.Reducing stress-induced hormone imbalances. These top five breast cancer fighters include…

1. Omega-3 Fish Oils positively

influence all five of the key pathways mentioned above. However, they are especially important for reducing chronic inflammation, which is one of the precursors of cancer.

2. Probiotics. Beneficial bacteria in the

intestinal tract help metabolize nutrients, bind waste products for removal in stool and regulate immunity. When beneficial bacteria are depleted, the digestive tract is overrun with harmful bacteria and a condition called dysbiosis develops. This negatively impacts all five of the body’s key pathways, contributing to an increased risk for breast cancer. You can get some probiotics from eating yogurt and fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir. However, to fully support beneficial digestive bacteria, Lifestyle Health recommends a supplement

get their rainbow hues from the naturally occurring plant compounds called polyphenols (also referred to as flavonoids). The four polyphenols that are particularly important in the fight against breast cancer are: - Green tea catechins, which may lower the risk for cancers of the digestive tract, breast, bladder, lung, blood and prostate. - Curcumin, the bright yellow flavonoid found in turmeric root, which appears to inhibit cancer formation in a variety of ways, helping protect against the majority of cancer types. - Resveratrol, which gives colour to red grapes, has shown promise against breast, colorectal and liver cancers by activating tumor suppressor genes and increasing the rate of apoptosis (normal programmed cell death). - Indole-3-Carbinol found in all cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, also triggers cancer cells to commit programmed death or cellular suicide (apoptosis). You could take a combination supplement that contains all of these polyphenols, or you may take each one separately.

4. Antioxidants bind to oxidative

toxins so they can be eliminated. They also stimulate cellular repair and normal apoptosis. A plant-based diet provides adequate antioxidants, but in order to prevent breast cancer it is advisable to get additional support by taking; - Glutathione, the body’s “master antioxidant,” which is critical for the elimination of environmental toxins. - Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which is associated with decreased risk for breast cancer.

5. Vitamin D3. Numerous studies have

shown the cancer-preventing potential of this vitamin, which promotes proper cell maturation and regulates inflammation, among other activities. Without adequate levels of vitamin D, it’s hard for our bodies to maintain good blood sugar control or reduce inflammation. And although it’s often called the sunshine vitamin, the vast majority of South Africans do not get enough. Ask your doctor to measure your blood level of vitamin D to determine the right dosage for you.

5

Conclusion Taking these breast cancer prevention supplements is a huge step in the right direction. However, a comprehensive breast cancer prevention program involves many areas in which action steps can be taken. These include diet, lifestyle, mental well-being, stress levels etc. Chat to your trusted health care practitioner to advise you on the best holistic breast cancer prevention program for you.

THE ART OF SHAVING BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY

I

T always takes a spark to ignite a fire and true to form it all began with the return of the disconnected men’s haircut. What do I mean by this? Of course the funky pattern and shape shavings executed on the sides of the head, that we are seeing more and more of. Gents are realizing that they can enhance their looks with careful shaping of both beards and hair. A well-groomed beard can be extremely flattering and can strengthen features and give the illusion of a chiselled jawline. Not only have well-groomed beards made a comeback, but funky lines and shapes in the hair are extremely popular and more

acceptable in the mainstream. Men are being adventurous in their choices while young boys’ are having fun with haircuts that resemble Superheros. I can’t help feeling that experimenting with haircuts are a good way of youngsters expressing their individuality and sense of fashion. Clipper art must be done by a skilled person who has the correct equipment. Don’t try this at home as it takes a lot of practise and the final result is dependent on precision and clean lines. As this genre has progressed with time, I have witnessed the most amazing designs lately, from sharp parallel stripes, soccer balls to birds’ wings. So, why not express your creative side with a funky shave or a daring undercut. Happy styling!

PAWPAW JUICE

We love pawpaw (papaya) in a fruit salad, but try a freshly squeezed glass of pawpaw in the morning and you will want more. Not only high in energy, pawpaw is rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals such as provitamin A, vitamin B and C, magnesium, as well as dietary fibre. Pawpaw is high in potassium and is said to reduce the risk of hypertension and possibly stroke. All these nutrients promote cardiovascular health and provide protection against colon cancer.

E are in the final stages of the renovation now and, as I write this piece, there are three teams of workmen working on separate aspects of the completion. There is a team from D & D Gutters crafting seamless aluminium gutters and downpipes to deal with the rain that has blessed us in Ballito recently. Hopefully, the rain will continue to fall this season but unless you have a good system of guttering to lead the rainwater to where you want it, it can be detrimental to the structural integrity of the building.

The advantage of working with a company like D & D Gutters is that they give expert advice about how to go about saving and utilising the rainwater - something that we all should be doing. I have been very impressed with the speed and efficiency of the entire operation and would recommend D & D to anyone looking for help with gutters or rainwater harvesting. The painters - Mandla Pro Painters – subcontracted to Chapman Building, have been doing a great job on the project and now that they are doing the final touch ups, we have learnt something that you need to be aware of if you

THE RISE OF ARTISAN ENTREPRENEURS IN SOUTH AFRICA – AND WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED

BY STEVEN COHEN HEAD OF SAGE ONE INTERNATIONAL (AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, MIDDLE EAST AND ASIA)

A

many of the small scale producers we work with do not have great business systems in place. This makes reliably sourcing goods and receiving them at an expected time difficult,” he adds. For Kyle Dods from My Place Gourmet Group, the big challenge is switching to paying VAT: “We're now in a position where we have to add VAT, which in some cases adds an additional R10 to our product. These price increases in turn affects our customers.” It is mandatory for a person to register for VAT if the taxable supplies made or to be made is, in excess of R1 million in any consecutive twelve-month period. The artisan entrepreneurship space is challenging and having a passion for good food isn’t enough – you also need to be ready for long, hard hours spent pursuing your dream. The most successful artisan businesses succeed by finding a niche, creating a personality for the business and building great customer relationships. They have a well thought out strategy about how to grow and scale a business that is based on the values of handcrafted care and the personal touch.

ROUND THE WORLD – from the trendy east of London to the hipster capital of Montreal’s Mile End – the so-called ‘flat white economy’ continues to rise. It comprises the thousands upon thousands of artisan entrepreneurs selling craft beers, ethically sourced coffee and organic, gourmet foods to consumers who crave healthy, sustainable and authentic eating experiences.

Artisan entrepreneurs started their rise after the 2008 recession. Just consider the fact that nearly one in five beers consumed in the US today is a craft brand, or that specialist coffee shops sales in the US have tripled to nearly $50 billion since 2002. And the trend has been picked up in South Africa, with more and more Small & Medium Businesses across the country serving customers with locally sourced ‘farm to table’ food and handcrafted products. When we were evaluating the 702/CapeTalk Small Business Awards with Sage One this year, it was interesting to see how many artisan entrepreneurs there were among the nominees. Like their counterparts in North America and Europe, they are creating enormous economic opportunities for themselves while supporting local producers and giving consumers alternatives to big producers and retailers. SO HOW IS THIS DONE? Just think about how The Neighbourgoods market has revitalised its surrounding area in Braamfontein. This is one reason why we should support the rise of such businesses: they position themselves at the heart of the community. They support other small businesses and are effective job creators because of their focus on making high-quality goods with human care and love rather than mass producing products with machines. The 702 winner this year, The Munching Mongoose, is a great example. This company scours South Africa to find the best local produce from small scale farmers and producers. Having secured high-quality produce, it delivers farm fresh milk, eggs, cheese, bread and an

assortment of fruit and vegetables directly to its customers. Other artisans nominated include Baseline, whose owners believe that bad coffee should not happen to good people and Las Paletas artisan lollies, which are made in small batches with fresh fruit, herbs, nuts and real dairy. What these businesses have in common is that they are founded by people with a passion for good food, environmental sustainability and healthy living. WILL YOU FACE CHALLENGES? The Munching Mongoose has thrived, thanks to a receptive market, its exceptional customer service and the reach of the Internet. However, Brad Meiring, cofounder says that it hasn’t always been plain sailing. “Logistics has been a big challenge for us as we operate a delivery service and

HEALTHY MARGINS What’s more, it’s important to look at how you will earn a healthy margin off goods that will be more expensive to make or source than the mass-produced alternatives. How do you balance quality and price to ensure profitability? How do you keep people coming back, even if you’re not the cheapest supplier on the block? Traditional business disciplines such as tight inventory management, market research, hard-hitting sales and good customer relationship management are all key to success. Artisan entrepreneurs are thriving and delivering great service to their customers, but clearly, we could be doing more to help them grow. Like most small businesses, they would benefit from less tax and regulatory red tape, better access to finance and more support from bigger businesses. That said, advances such as online software and services, cheaper transportation and growing interest in locally produced goods all bode well for the future of South Africa’s artisan entrepreneurs. At Sage we started small and have grown beyond what seemed imaginable and take pride in our customers being able to do the same. South Africa’s artisan businesses are on the same trajectory – far beyond simply selling goods in neighbourhood shops and flea markets - they are small business heroes who are helping to grow our country’s economy.

trawberries are packed full of phenols. Anthocyanin, a particular phenol abundantly found in strawberries, lends the rich red colour to the fruit. Though anthocyanin is known to have antioxidant properties within the fruit, it is debated as to whether the antioxidant agents in anthocyaninrich foods can be absorbed into the body once digested. Fortunately, however, it is known that when anthocyanin-rich foods are consumed, the body’s uric acid levels increase, which serves as an antioxidant agent.

Natural Anti-Inflammatory

By inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) in the same way that the drugs aspirin and ibuprofen do, the

phenols in strawberries also fight against many inflammatory disorders, such as osteoarthritis, asthma and atherosclerosis - without the unwanted side effects like stomach and intestinal bleeding.

Anti-Cancer

Thanks to the vitamin C, folate, and the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol that are found in this fruit, strawberries are a delicious defence against potentially cancerous cells.

Healthy Eyes

Recent studies in ophthalmology show that three or more

servings of strawberries - as well as other fruits and berries - per day can decrease the onset of age-related macular degeneration by over one-third.

Assist with cardiovascular diseases

Strawberries also contain manganese, an essential nutrient that acts as a powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory agent. By increasing the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), the enzyme responsible for protecting mitochondria exposed to oxygen, manganese not only helps to fight the battle against free radicals and oxidative stress, but also lessens cellular inflammation - another cause of numerous cardiovascular diseases.

Bone Health

Manganese is also great for the bones, helping in bone building and maintaining proper bone structure. The potassium, vitamin K, and magnesium in strawberries are also important for bone health.

ADD THIS BRAIN WARM-UP TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE MIKE CERNOVICH

C

OUNT BACKWARDS FROM 100.

Speed is key. Don’t stop if you skip a number. Find a noun that fits each letter of the alphabet. Don’t just think of an object. Imagine the colors and shapes and sizes of the noun. This will activate your right brain (colors, images, shapes, sizes) and left brain (verbal, think of a word) simultaneously. This “brain crosstalk” will improve your overall cognitive performance. • a – apple • b – boy • c – cronut • d – etc. Create a numbered list of female names, 1-10. • 1 – Lisa • 2 – Tina • 3 – Sherry • 4 – etc. Create a numbered list of male names, 1-10. • 1 – Edward • 2 – Tom • 3 – Bob • 4 – etc.

•Close your eyes and take 10 deep meditative breaths. •As you breath deeply, focus on oxygenating your brain. You should feel the blood vessels and capillaries surrounding your brain start to expand. •Open your eyes and start your day. •Why does this brain warm-up work? •The brain warm-up creates neurological connections in your brain by getting all hemispheres of your brain “talking” to one another. •It improves your working memory because you have to keep track of where you are in any given exercise. “Okay, I said d-door, so that means I need a word for e.” •It teaches you to think fast. •It stretches your vocabulary. •You learn how to get inside your head. To perform this brain warm-up, you are talking to yourself (finding words) and watching a movie (visualizing the objects). •It teaches you how to focus, as you can’t play with your smart phone while performing this exercise.

MEET THE PREMIUM PICK-UP TRUCK

Mercedes-Benz Reveals Its X-Class Designed to Take Workhorse 4x4s Upmarket

W

hen you think of a Mercedes you probably imagine the kind of luxurious, comfortable saloons with back-massaging seats driven by company execs.

But the German brand is planning on building a utilitarian bruiser for more burly blokes when it releases a pick-up truck next year. Called the X-Class, Mercedes claims it to be the first truly premium pick-up you can buy, and this concept version points at what it will eventually look like when it hits the market in 2017. Mercedes revealed not one but two Concept X-Class previews at an event in Stockholm, Sweden, last week. The new flat-bed 4X4 will be based on the Nissan Navara platform - one of the most accomplished trucks on sale today - as part of the Mercedes and Renault-Nissan tie-up that has also seen the brands work together on other projects, including the recent Smart range and Renault Twingo. It seems Mercedes will stick to a twincab approach, meaning the truck will also be capable of carting the family around when it’s not on work duties. Of the two preview cars showcased, the gold Concept X-Class Powerful Adventurer (yes, we’re not sure about the name either) is the one that stands out for sheer brutishness. The high-riding suspension, knobbly tyres, front and rear winches and interiorcradled fire extinguisher are about as far from the stereotypical Mercedes you can get.

The silver Concept X-Class Stylish Explorer is more akin to what to expect from the vehicle that makes production. This concept is designed to showcase the premium refinement that will stand the X-Class apart from its more agricultural rivals currently being deployed on farms, building sites and for other labour purposes. While Mercedes may be best known for its luxury cars, it also has a big-selling range of vans, so is no stranger to the world of work vehicles. While Mercedes has promised something inbetween the two concepts, both share features that could slip through to the production line. For instance, the thin LED headlights, oversized grille with huge three-pointed star and mild bonnet bulge are realistic styling cues that could make the cut. The enormous air intakes below the grille are unlikely to be signed off for production, or the tailgate-wrapping rear light structure. The on-sale version of the X-Class isn’t likely to be as luxuriously appointed as the concepts either, but Mercedes is expected to lift the dashboards and interior materials from Mercedes’ passenger car range to place it firmly in the premium bracket. Engine and transmission details are a little fluffy at the moment, but all models will feature a six-cylinder powerplant and an updated version of the German carmakers’ 4Matic permanent four-wheel drive system to cope with off-road excursions.

name X-ADV.

ONDA has released some teasing photos of its upcoming adventurescooter. The scooter is expected to launch as a 2017 model under the

The X-ADV is the market-ready version of a concept Honda dubbed the “City Adventure,” which debuted at the 2015 EICMA show in Italy. Photos of that bike show an angular, futuristic scooter with more ground clearance and presumably more suspension travel than the Integra scooter it shares an engine with. With its wire-spoke wheels, protected underbelly and dual sport tires, the X-ADV looks ready for dirt roads, and a low centre of gravity will probably make it easy to put your feet down and paddle through difficult off-road sections.

FEATURES:

▪ Based on the 745 cc parallel-twin, liquidcooled engine with eight-valves and a single overhead-cam used in Honda’s current model NC750 series and Integra scooter. ▪ 54 hp and 68 Nm torque fed into a DCT gearbox. ▪ The X-ADV appears to feature stepthrough styling. ▪ Dual-purpose patterned tyres that make it somewhat resemble the CRF1000L Africa Twin. ▪ This imagery is helped by the up-swept exhaust. ▪ Tall windscreen ▪ Hand-guards. ▪ Spoked wheels. ▪ Long-travel suspension.

Newness was all around when Life & Style attended the launch of the revamped Weylandts store on the Umhlanga Ridge, showcasing a breathtaking array of locally made and internationally sourced products alongside refined existing ranges from the home outfitters. Radio Life & Style’s Mike Charles rubbed shoulders with Weylandts founder Chris Weylandt who formally kicked things off following the biggest revamp in the history of the iconic brand. Lian Louw and her team from Weylandts Umhlanga ensured a seamless event and Ballito’s very own Jackie Ray provided the prefect touch, with her elegant Food Matters catering complimenting the phenomenal Maison Estate wines. For a breath of interior inspiration, pay a visit to the reimagined store at 9 Tetford Circle, Umhlanga Ridge or visit www.weylandts.co.za - you’ll be glad you did.
