adio Life & Style will celebrate its second anniversary in December. I remember the launch party with mixed emotions because while an excited crowd of some of Ballito’s most influential people was gathering around the fabulous spread created for the occasion by Zara's Café and the Liquid Chefs plied their trade with enthusiasm and gusto, I was in hiding and plotting a rapid departure for destination unknown.

This was the culmination of several days of intense activity in and around the newly installed container-crafted radio studio that had been partially assembled at a factory on the East Rand. It was then to be loaded onto a flatbed and trucked down to the coast for final assembly. Well that was the idea, but it hadn’t worked out quite as planned. For starters, the large glass windows and doors that had been preinstalled at the factory, parted way with the containers en-route causing a considerable delay to the proceedings. The two man team that had been sent ahead to ensure final delivery and assembly assured us that all would be well, despite the fact that they had lost contact with the truck somewhere in the Freestate and had no idea where it was or when it was expected to arrive. They were a decidedly odd couple, vaguely reminiscent of the cast of The Most Amazing Show – one of the most bizarrely funny TV series ever made in South Africa. The truck finally did arrive a full twenty four hours later, having been rerouted to Durban for some temporary repairs to the container structures. These were painstakingly offloaded and manoeuvred on wheeled dollies through the Lifestyle Centre to their final destination by an expert team of local riggers. Then our comedy team took over… and, just like any episode of The Most Amazing Show, chaos ensued. In fairness, they tried very hard, but the task they were attempting was way

beyond them. The original design by architect Mabette Vermaak was exceptional – a brilliantly creative use of space and an inspired combination of form and function. Now it was being reinterpreted by Corne and Twakkie – Benoni style! Vertical decking timbers were laid horizontally and painted a kind of dayglo orange, a decorative steel superstructure was held in place by rope and abandoned, airconditioning units were installed and run without gas – with predictable results and the electrical wiring was hopelessly confused. They were also running way behind schedule. Into the confusion came our technical team from Joburg to tackle the mammoth job of wiring and installing the broadcast and studio equipment in time for the grand switch on scheduled for 8pm on Wednesday 10th December. I will never forget the heat in those metal and glass boxes without functional air conditioning while sweating technicians ran miles of cable through trunking to various points in preparation for the installation on microphones, headphones, amplifiers, monitors, computers and a huge array of ancillary broadcast equipment. This was the day before the scheduled launch of the station and the magical 8pm switch on. I could see the panic in the eyes of the technical crew who were racing against the clock to have everything installed in time for the big moment. By the morning of the 10th, it looked promising. Most of the

equipment was on site and slotting into place. Soundproofing panels had been installed and there was just a little work to be done on the electrical distribution board before everything could be powered up and tested. And that’s when the full extent of Corne and Twakkie’s handiwork became evident – nothing was working! Circuits had been totally incorrectly wired and they couldn’t work out how to sort out the mess. In desperation we called in Paul Herbst, a local electrician with the patience of Job. There was now a huge crowd outside the studio and the party was in full swing…the countdown to 8pm had begun completely oblivious to the pandemonium in the studio. Tempers frayed and the clock kept ticking. We now had less than twenty minutes to go and my mind was racing, cooking up crazy escape plans to avoid the humiliation of the biggest nonevent in local history. And then Paul flicked a switch and the equipment lit up…we had power! A quick check confirmed that the transmitter was broadcasting on 88.0FM and at 8pm on Wednesday 10th December 2014, Ballito’s first commercial radio station was launched with the phrase “You’re listening to Radio Life & Style coming to you live from the heart of Ballito on 88.0fm”. It’s been a busy two years and the station continues to grow. It is already much bigger than we thought it would be and we look forward to many more years…coming to you from out of the blue…on air, online and in print.

THE DREAM BECOMES A REALITY

T

he Renovation Dream Team celebrated the end of a successful transformation of the Life & Style HQ in Stella Rd, Ballito recently. It was a chance to inspect the finished product and reflect on what it took to get there. Everyone was suitably impresses with both the build and the finishes and the overall impression was that the Dream Team knocked this one out of the park!

Particular reference was made to the input of team manager Ivan Kisten and his foreman, Vusi, who went the extra mile in every respect to ensure a superb result. Many glasses were raised to all concerned and the catering did justice to the marvellous result. Liquor City Ballito kept the drinks flowing, Rocket Catering did a superb lamb on the spit and Food Matters supplied the dessert from heaven! It was so good, we thought that we might do it all again… next year!

As with so many other things that sadly seem to decline with age, so does collagen. This decline is exacerbated by diets high in sugar, smoking and excessive sun exposure.

So just how healthy is collagen for you? Let’s look at 5 ways collagen can improve your health • IMPROVES SKIN QUALITY: As we age, collagen

production declines. This contributes to sagging skin, wrinkles and decreased elasticity. While spending money on expensive creams can help your skin externally, your diet has the biggest influence on your skin health, i.e. beauty starts from the inside out. Increasing collagen levels can help your skin look firmer, increase smoothness.

• FIGHTS JOINT PAIN: Bones as well as joint carti-

lage are largely comprised of collagen, which with age deteriorates leading to all of our aches and pains and even disorders such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Supplementing with high quality collagen may help slow down or even prevent this decline helping your joints to move more easily, reduce joint pain and even reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

• SUPPORTS GUT HEALTH: It is a lesser-known fact that our gut is responsible for a huge proportion of our body’s immune system. This makes sense seeing as it is the first barrier to all the potentially harmful bugs that we ingest daily, and to the bacteria which happily call our digestive tract home. That being said, it is important to support our guts health to prevent the passage of these toxins and potential invaders. Collagen is packed full of the amino acid glutamine, which feed the cells of the gut lining keeping this barrier healthy and ready for any pesky trouble-makers. • SUPPORTS WEIGHT LOSS: How can eating collagen help you lose weight? It sounds ridiculous but eating collagen naturally inhibits the hunger hormones secreted in your gut keeping you satiated for longer (thus preventing you from picking up that extra pork-pie in between meals). Adding collagen to your mid-morning or mid-afternoon tea/coffee can be a great strategy to curb these troublesome cravings. Supplementing with collagen can also increase your metabolism. Glycine, found in collagen, helps pump sugar into your body’s

tissue to increase energy levels, while amino acids help muscle development. This in turn boosts your metabolism and fat burning potential.

vitamin C, or make sure that your supplement includes these activating nutrients to ensure absorption and usefulness to your body.

• IMPROVES SLEEP QUALITY & STRESS LEVELS: Col-

Collagen provides a plethora of health benefits; from improved skin and sleep to joint and digestive support. Incorporate more collagen into your diet and feel the difference for yourself.

lagen can help to support deep sleep because it’s loaded with the amino acid glycine. Glycine helps your body relax and unwind, thus decreasing stress levels and promoting quality deep sleep. While it is not a sedative, glycine helps set the foundation for quality sleep so you can keep your energy levels high, fight off colds and flu, and thrive at work and play.

So its really simple, collagen is good for you, but how does one get enough of this superfood and keep ourselves younger, healthier and fitter than all our work colleagues?

increase collagen intake. It’s a healthy, delicious way to use the bones that we would normally throw away and therefore will save you money for your Christmas shopping or your next spoil. There are many recipes available especially when looking online.

•Collagen supplements are an-

other easy way to increase your collagen intake. Make sure that you get your powder from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows (with no antibiotics or chemicals). Alternatively hydrolyzed marine collagen powder is another fantastic product to supplement with. Collagen can be mixed into smoothies, soups or even into baked goods to provide collagen’s healthy benefits without adding any taste to your favourite meals.

foods such as eggs, poultry, fish and milk. It is important to note that Collagen also requires vitamin C, manganese, copper, proline and foods high in Anthocyanidins (such as blueberries and cherries) in order to be activated in the body. Therefore you always want to take your supplements with a source of amino acids and

6 Ways to Win the Weight-Loss JEN MUELLER Battle

M

any dieters tend to make similar mistakes when trying to lose weight. But being aware of these mistakes—and making small physical and mental changes—will help you lose the weight and keep it off for good. Here’s how:

Slower is Better

The first mistake dieters make is having unrealistic weight loss expectations. Studies show that individuals who rapidly lose weight are more likely to gain it back.

Everyone is Different

While some people lose a lot of weight in the first few weeks, others might not lose any weight for a few weeks. Although this can be frustrating when you’re doing everything right, it’s not a reason to give up. Sometimes it just takes a little while longer to see the results of your hard work reflected on the scale. Remember, eating right and exercising regularly have positive impacts on your health in many other ways, such as more energy, less stress, better sleep, and reduced risk of many diseases. You’ll receive those benefits—regardless of the number on the scale.

Weight Loss is Rarely Constant from Week to Week

Many people lose a lot in the first few weeks, and then their weight loss slows down considerably. It’s totally normal to have weeks when you lose more than expected, and weeks when your weight

remains the same despite your consistent efforts. Measuring your weight loss on a monthly basis can be a more accurate gauge of how well you are doing.

Weight Loss is Not Immediate

Cutting calories today (through diet and exercise) will not necessarily show up on the scale at the end of the day or even by tomorrow. Your weight can fluctuate from day-to-day for reasons that have nothing to do with your diet and exercise program. Much of this fluctuation is due to water and food intake. While your scale may show changes throughout the day, fluctuations that could be due to food & water alone are not permanent weight losses or gains.

Setbacks Are Normal

No one is perfect. You can expect to hit some bumps in the road, no matter how hard you’re trying. The important thing is not to let those bumps get you totally off track, but to learn from them and move forward.

Eating Less Isn’t Always Better

A lot of people assume that the less you eat, the faster you will lose. One of the biggest mistakes dieters make is not eating enough. If your body is not getting enough nutrients and calories, your metabolism will slow down. That’s why it’s so important to eat within your calorie range. If you aren’t, you could be doing more harm than good. Hopefully these tips will help you deal with the ups and downs of weight loss more easily. Hang in there! It’s not always easy, but you can do it!

ummer is on its way and with it the humidity that wreaks havoc with your hair, turning your silky-smooth tresses into a tangled, tousled mop and a reliable straightening and anti-frizz product into your new BFF. But which product should you choose from the wide variety of chemical and non-chemical treatments, all of which promise to solve your hair-hassles with one easy application?

Understanding the composition of these products is a good start to finding the right solution to keep you looking sleek this summer. Chemical, or permanent, straighteners work like a reverse perm and can be effective in straightening, de-frizzing and controlling the volume of curly or wavy hair. Relaxers, on the other hand, are generally more effective on ethnic hair, straightening the hair by breaking down and restructuring the hair's internal composition. The active ingredients in chemical straightening and relaxing products are usually sodium hydroxide (lye), which is used on coarse curly hair or ammonium thioglycolate, which is most effective on fine curly or wavy hair. However, if your hair has already been chemically treated in any way, you would do well to proceed with caution even if your hair is in reasonable condition, as chemicals do weaken the hair. Regular conditioning

treatments are a must for chemicallystraightened hair, particularly if you plan to heat-style it. A relatively new and popular alternative to chemical straighteners, which offers both frizz control and improved hair condition, is keratin treatment. Certain of the early keratin treatments did contain chemicals that released formaldehyde, a potentially harmful gas, when heat was applied but most of the new, advanced keratin products are formaldehyde free. It is worth checking which product your stylist uses. The newest nanotech keratin treatments are gently ironed into the hair and can last for up to six months. Don’t be dismayed if there is an unusual aroma when it is applied - this is attributable to the exotic organic ingredients that are added to boost your hair condition and won’t last. Special care must be taken in maintaining your keratin-treated hair to ensure the best results and this means avoiding products that contain salt, or sodium chloride, rather than sulphate-free treatments, as has been suggested. With all the technological advances in hair care it is perfectly possible to enjoy a frizz-free Summer!

Happy Styling!

T

atiana and Renier Basson were married on the 4th November 2016 at Palm Dunes in Blythedale. The couple met in Russia and after a whirlwind romance they decided to get married on the beach in South Africa. Tatiana's Grandmother flew out from Russia to walk her Granddaughter down the aisle and she made a speech in Russian which the bride translated into English for all the family and friends who were present at the celebration. It was a super weddind and Barry Bowditch took some really lovely pics that we are delighted to share with you. We wish the happy couple a wonderful life together!

A recent study found that antioxidants in cocoa prevented laboratory mice from gaining excess weight and actually lowered their blood sugar levels. And another study at Louisiana State University found that gut microbes in our stomach ferment chocolate into hearthealthy, anti-inflammatory compounds that shut down genes linked to insulin resistance and inflammation. To enhance the effects, try pairing your chocolate with some apple slices: The fruit speeds up the fermentation process, leading to an even greater reduction in inflammation and weight.

Avocado High in fiber and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, guacamole. A half cup of guac—assuming you didn’t go and blow it by mixing in sour cream or something else that doesn’t belong—gives you more than 7 grams of fiber. For a super quick recipe, mix 1 ripe avocado, the juice of one lime, 2 Tbs chopped fresh cilantro and a pinch or two of sea salt.

Tea White tea works in three distinct ways to help strip away fat from your body. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism showed that white tea can simultaneously boost lipolysis (the breakdown of fat) and block adipogenesis (the formation of fat cells). Another group of researchers found that the tea is also a rich source of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from the cells and help speed the liver’s ability to turn fat into energy. Who needs Spanx when you can just sip on this powerful brew? If there’s such a thing as a muffin-top-melting tea, this is it.

HILUX SRX HITS THE GYM

C

T

HE return of Maserati to South Africa has created enormous excitement in South African motoring circles and the recent news that a dealership will be opening in Umhlanga in 2017 has been met with huge enthusiasm. Ballito’s Anton von Alleman has been working hard behind the scenes for several months to bring this dream to fruition and it’s all paying off now. He and a partner have secured the Maserati dealership for this part of the world and it couldn’t be in better hands.

Anton has been intimately involved in every aspect of the motoring world, following a love for bikes and cars instilled in him as a kid. His dad, Doug, was passionate about motorsport and closely involved in some truly ground-breaking automotive developments that helped create legends like the Ford XR8. The von Allemans established the Ballito Car Service Centre which enjoys a reputation for

excellent service and over the years they have delighted customers with innovative solutions to many automotive conundrums. But the Maserati deal has been a complete game changer for Anton and we are delighted for him. We will bring you a more in depth look at the operation closer to the opening of the new dealership in Umhlanga Rocks early next year. But Maserati excitement has already ignited the immagination of the corporate world and the Suncoast Casino is offering a Maserati Ghibli as a prize to be drawn soon and we were invited to the launch of this campaign on the weekend. This was an opportunity to display a fleet of new Maseratis to the media as a sneak preview and they certainly didn’t disappoint. We wish Anton and his team huge success and look forward to the growth of Maserati in the region.

TOYOTA HILUX SRX MODELS RECEIVE AN UPGRADE

he Toyota Hilux range remains one of SA’s favourite vehicles, with the new model having racked up over 30 000 units since introduction in February this year. Topping sales charts on a consistent basis, the monthly sales figures are testament to South African’s love, respect and trust for the ‘bakkie’.

The most significant change comes in the form of the change from the previous ‘narrow- body’ design to the new ‘wide-body’ construction. Metaphorically speaking, the Hilux SRX has been subjected to a rigorous gym exercise programme, with the result that it now stands wider, taller and more prominent. The change to the wide-configuration, brings along with it bold, integrated overfenders (as seen on existing Raider models) paired with a wider, front bumper design. This re-profiled exterior adds 55mm to the width of Single-cab and Double-cab SRX derivatives (up to 1855mm). Xtra-cab models already boast the ‘widebody’ construction, and as such all three body shapes now share the same exterior width dimension. The exterior mirrors inherit turn signal lamps, whilst retaining the durable matte black treatment and electric adjustment.

The latest round of upgrades to the Hilux SRX, positions it to occupy a unique space in the LCV market. Whilst retaining its go-anywhere, doanything utility credentials, the SRX derivatives now incorporate enhanced exterior styling – which are sure to appeal to the leisure buyer as well. The new SRX package perfectly complements the sublimely capable 110kW, 400Nm 2.4 litre GD-6 engine (or 2.7 litre petrol VVTi powerplant) and delivers a bakkie that will work hard in the week, whilst allowing its owners to play just as hard over weekends too – and look good doing it.
