HE weather on the weekend was lovely for the garden – and the swimming pool enjoyed a free top-up into the bargain, but I wasn’t too keen on taking the dogs out in the rain. Our dogs are what one might call problematic. We got them as adolescents and, as we subsequently discovered, this is not a good idea. By then they had already developed the kind of anti- f o social behaviour that proved impossible to shake despite our best attempts. Although they weren’t officially expelled from training school, there was much relief in those quarters when we eventually threw in the towel and resolved to manage the situation by keeping them away from oportunities that might trigger an adverse response.

MMM TASTY...
Having builders on site for the past few months has been interesting. The dogs cost us a small fortune and created a bit of a cottage industry among the labour force while it lasted. Touch wood, no one was seriously molested – at least nothing that a quick tetanus shot and a couple of hundred rand in compensation couldn’t fix, but the stress levels were uncomfortably high throughout the entire exercise as a result. Taking them for a walk is always a bit of a gamble – we go where there is little chance of encountering other walkers, human or animal, and that means a bit of a hike. It’s okay when the weather is good, but our usual route has been churned up by an irritating construction site that has created a mud flow that makes it difficult to reach our destination in inclement weather. Still, they love a walk and this weekend was no exception. To avoid the mud we took a slightly different route on Sunday and came across a real culinary bonanza as a result. Zulu folk call them amakhowe – here’s what the Slow Food Foundation for
Biodiversity says about them: This mushroom (Termitomyces umkowaani) is a large, finely fleshed beefsteak mushroom with a cap that can grow up to 30 cm in diameter. They have a sweet and mildly nutty flavour. In South Africa, d • f a s h i o n • h o m e • s e r v i c e amakhowe grow wild mainly in subtropical forest areas, predominantly northern KwaZuluNatal. This mushroom species belongs to a variety of mushrooms that depend on the activityTel: 032 946 8540 of termites for their www.ballitolifestylecentre.co.za “cultivation,” and grow in a symbiotic relationship with the insects inside their nests. Amakhowe are mainly collected for personal or family use, or by some small local restaurants, and can also occasionally be found sold by informal traders. Some South Africans consider them a local version of truffles found elsewhere in the world. And there they were – just waiting for us to find them! I was over the moon, but Sue was more circumspect, not having quite as much faith in my mushroom identification skills as the dogs who were delighted for me! I had recently read a recipe for a pasta dish that I had sampled at Brett Michelin’s Mozambik Restaurant and was quite keen to reproduce it. Sadly, we were out of cream, white wine, truffle oil and Grana Padano… and being quite late on a Sunday this was a deal breaker. So I opted for mushrooms on toast instead! What a treat…and, after watching me closely for signs of imminent death that failed to materialise, even Sue was tempted to try some. The verdict – let’s go and look there again next week! APOLEON HILL once said: “Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of others.”
The message at our Matric Valedictory was Trust and Faith. If you have both, remember you can move mountains. For the most, that seed is in its germinating phase, for some it might be lying dormant, still waiting for the right conditions. But, the fact is that individually, each one has been gifted with that seed. The seed within you is potential, it is growth, it’s possibility, it’s your destiny and it’s going to be your legacy. The seed is not time specific. It is a seed that grows within each one of us. It is something to be nurtured, to be respected and to be honoured. This seed will interpret who you are. I believe a lovely comparison would be our new sports fields on the Promised Land. From a distance it looks, lush and green and really quite spectacular. But the closer you get to the ground, you will see that the lush green grass is made up of individual blades which germinated from single seeds. In the same way, if one could position themselves above Ashton College looking down on each and every single student, you will see individuals with those gifted seeds.
Students are what make this College, and you as the individual have a part and a role to play in the bigger picture of Ashton. Let us be bold in what we do. Yes, I know it’s not easy and mark my words, while on holiday you will be challenged, possibly daily by people you surround yourself with - good or bad. But, remember this…. You control it! Words like Heart, Spirit, Character and Courage. Words like TRUST and FAITH, AUTHENTICITY and INTEGRITY and start profiling yourself on those words. See how these words mould or form you – they determine who you are. Are you authentic? Ashton is not only about academic, sport or culture. It is also about each individual student and who they are. As we draw to the close of another successful year, let us be grateful and humble for the accomplishments of 2016. We thank each and every student, parent and staff member for their contribution. Thank you for building this College into a proud Educational Institution of Excellence. There has been an amazing synergy and strength within our community that continues to grow. To our Ballito community we wish you a Blessed Christmas and an exciting 2017.
T’S been a long time coming but finally the new Ballito taxi rank has been officially sanctioned by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Nomusa Dube-Ncube. This was the final step in a process that began several years ago with the establishment of a temporary rank outside the Lifestyle Centre. The temporary rank was relocated to the Sangweni Tourism Information Centre when the main road into Ballito was widened to accommodate increasing volumes of traffic.
When violence flaired at the rank resulting in casualties from several exchanges of gun fire, there was a general call to relocate the rank to an area that could be properly secured and protected. The Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association was intimately involved in discussions with representatives from Taxi Associations, commercial property developers and municipal representatives in a bid to fast track this development. There were undertakings given, deadlines missed, positions changed and the frustration grew. Ultimately it came down to identifying a piece of land best suited to the purpose and eventually it was decided that the best location for the Ballito Taxi Rank was between the Shell
tel: 032 946 2096 | fax: 032 946 2104
admissions@ashtonballito.co.za Garageemail: and Mc Donalds on the P445 – the main roadweb: into www.ashtonballito.co.za Ballito. This land was privately owned and there were some complications with the process that eventually resulted in a decision to expropriate it with market-related compensation. This process had to be ratified by the appropriate MEC and these matters are seldom expedited quickly. It took almost a full year to work through the process once the decision had been taken and now, finally, all of the paperwork is in place and the work can begin. According to our sources at the municipality this will fall into the scope of works for 2017. The new rank will be fit for purpose with weather protection for commuters, proper ablutions and a layout purposedesigned for rapid flow and minimal congestion. It will also be much easier to control and secure for the safety of all. The Ratepayers Association has an important role to play to ensure the best interests of all who subscribe to it are protected because it is the only statutory body for citizens to use to actively engage with local government through. By supporting the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, you are essentially ensuring that your own interests are being looked after. For more info visit www.docrra.co.za

DECEMBER 2016
– CONTAINER
ARCHITECTURE AND MORE 1. What is the name of your company and when did you start your journey in architecture? DETAIL ARCHITECTS was established in November 1996. I think that my journey in architecture subconsciously started around our family kitchen table at the age of about 9 or 10. My mom was a grade 4 teacher but in a process to make ends meet decided to get involved in the property market. I remember helping her cut out pieces of cardboard to indicate scaled furniture items and sitting to the late hours of the night “playing” around with alternative options of design solutions. Then as a high school student I decided to study architecture as I believed that it would be a perfect combination of my then favourite subjects, art and maths… now looking at architecture and specifically residential architecture I know that architecture is much more than that. Winston Churchill said: “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” 2. What is your style of design? How would you describe your work? My style has developed from years of study, exploring ideas, continually looking at buildings and developing an understanding of what I feel creates great spaces. I strive to create honest spaces that can become the support act to the end user…. The client brief together with a detailed site analysis is used to form the backbone of each individual project concept. 3. Can you explain the architecture and design of the Life &Style studio container? I was SUPER excited to do this! There are amazing buildings created by making use of shipping containers: drive through coffee shops, restaurants, holiday homes as well as permanent homes on an estate, even an entire shopping complex and boutique hotel, to name a few. With the opportunity
to design the Life & Style studio I had the PERFECT clients. We received a short but thorough brief, and then they stepped back and allowed us to make the magic happen. The context of and accessibility to the site played a big role in the configuration of the building. Containers come in a series of specific dimensions. It is as if you have a box full of oversized Lego pieces, those pieces can be combined in a multitude of ways…And there is not necessarily a right and a wrong combination…But somehow if you manage to find the best combination for your client’s specific needs on his/ her specific site…you almost FEEL it. Visibility from different vantage points, scale of surrounding buildings, existing services and the establishment of the radio brand were all factors that had to be addressed. The logistics of radio broadcasting and the technical requirements supporting that was fascinating. The studio basically consists of two 6m containers. The one container accommodates the entrance and reception area. By cutting in huge glass panes on both sides this unit becomes transparent and the passerby experiences the luscious greens of the nursery as the backdrop. The other container is utilized as a coffee kitchen, storage area and then the broadcasting studio. The public is extremely important to the radio station. By replacing the entire end panel of this unit with glass and positioning the broadcasting desk in a specific way we hoped to visually open up the mystery behind broadcasting, creating a link between the public and the broadcaster. Anybody that has
ever looked at the crow’s nest of wires behind their home theater system will appreciate the challenges behind this configuration. Next time when you walk past the Life & Style radio station, stop, walk up, wave, and even stare if you like…. Knowing that this type of interaction is exactly what we aimed to facilitate. 4. What were the challenges of the Life & Style studio design? Our first challenge was the program – we had an extremely short lead time and our client was very keen to have the station up and running prior to the December break. Anybody who has worked in KZN for a while knows that most clocks down here are set on beach time. From as early as midOctober the industry is already slowing down, preparing for the keenly awaited December break. We eventually resorted to using a company from Gauteng to refurbish the containers off site. The idea was that the containers would be delivered as almost completed units based on the design, and then purely connected / assembled on site to form the end product. Academically this sounded realistic but the factors that proved problematic were quality control and delivery date. It was a bit like waiting for a baby to be born… we even had an early morning exercise where the whole local team arrived at Lifestyle Centre, eagerly awaiting the big delivery just to leave the site disappointed and frustrated a few hours later. But again as with a baby…It was all worth the wait in the end! 5. Are container-based structures easier and more affordable to design and build? Or is this is a myth. I am of the opinion that is neither easier nor more affordable. The dimensions of containers are very limiting and requires some serious out of the box thinking (Pardon the pun). But it is exactly this challenge that can result in amazing spaces created.
It forces you to think of the use of space and strip it down to the bare necessities… From an external spatial point… the fact that the containers have their own structural integrity makes the design process very interesting… you can stack them, cantilever them, support them against the slope… in the process creating outside spaces… once you realize the full potential of the space you are creating …the limited size of the container becomes the grid, the backdrop supporting the spatial concept. Further advantages of container architecture is that the process is less time consuming and definitely gets a big tick in terms of sustainability. The reality of the matter is however much that project cost ends up to be very similar (if not more expensive) to projects making use of conventional building products. 6. What are your favorite aspects of the structure? The fact that EVERY square centimeter of the space was utilized to its full potential. The way that the building fits into the space, making a bold statement but simultaneously acknowledging the existing context it is positioned in.

Interior
Trends 2017
ONLINE
2017 promises to be a shakeup of interior styles and fashions.
WHAT’S IN 1. TERRACOTTA This is one of the main colours for the upcoming year. A perfect choice for tiles- replacing the cool and white tones. A great option for floors, feature walls for bathrooms and cladding fireplaces. 2. CORK Cork is making a comeback. It is a stylish material that brings warmth and texture to a space. The big trend for 2017 will be using cork to clad entire walls in homes and workplaces to pin notes to and as a great means to absorbing noise. 3. DARK GREEN Another colour at the forefront for 2017 is dark shades of green (replacing the midnight blues and navy of 2016). Perfect for painting bedroom walls and creating a wintery feel. This is beautifully complimented with tan leathers, faux fur, brass lamps and natural linen. It also works well as an accent when used for accessories to the living room- adding depth and highlighting colours from the outdoors. 4. UPHOLSTERED BEDHEADS 2017 ushers in the age of upholstered bedheads replacing the previous bedroom staple of timber
DECEMBER 2016
WHAT’S OUT bed frames. The upholstered bedhead is a luxurious asset to any bedroom and come in a range of different styles. You may choose a neutral colour with buttons or a plush velvet style. It is an easy way to update and add instant allure to your bedroom.
1. COPPER Rose gold is out as well as polished looks and is replaced by an industrial aesthetic. 2. MARBLE Marble in the home is out and will be replaced with raw, earthy textures such as clay and wicker.
5. ESCAPISM 2017 is a technologically driven year and a reaction to this is the introduction of escapism as a style genre into the home. With the constant pressures of a computer and digital driven lifestyle there is a desire for places in the home that are a haven for relaxation and escaping from digital distractions. These tranquil spots may be a bedroom or a little nook with relaxed furniture such as deep, soft couches with slip covers to day beds, chunky wool rugs, ‘love seats’ and floor cushions.
3. QUOTE ARTWORKS After years of popularity this trend is over. 4. FIDDLE LEAF FIGS Consumers are tired of the Fiddle Leaf Fig’s look, and upkeep. Now to be replaced with the Olive Tree! 5. OPEN PLAN LIVING In a move towards a more private home layout – defined living spaces are trending for 2017.
6. JEWEL TONES Tones inspired by metals, space, stars, clouds and cosmos. This includes metallics, metals, raw-cut quartz, Lucite and opal with add of sparkle. The trends even stretch to transparent fabrics, light silks and soft sheers.
6. SUBWAY TILES Subway tiles have been overused in bathrooms and kitchens everywhere. The change will usher in ‘finger’/ ‘kit-kat’ tiles that are laid in vertical or horizontal rows.
Landscape Trends 2017 A Fresh new start applies to your garden too NATURAL MATERIALS There will be a focus on natural materials and less of a geometric style in gardens with a move towards a DIY look. Free form decks, smaller outdoor furniture and swing seating are at the forefront with a focus on authenticity and an organic feel. This can be achieved by using natural, tactile materials like wood and stone for elements of the garden. COLOUR BLOCKING Not only a fashion trendcolour blocking is all the rage this upcoming year. Using this trend to highlight or frame a feature or plant in the garden is a must. Blocked patio walls, solid colour outdoor rugs and porch curtains create this look well. LAWN REIMAGINED 2017 will opt for grass mixes that do not need constant maintenance and mowing. These alternatives include Habiturg and prairie-type mixes. There is also a move towards smaller areas of grass that are actually used instead of just for show. Faux grass continues to grow in popularity due to its low maintenance and strides in looking and feeling more natural than ever before. OLD AND NEW MASH-UP Mixing old and new is a fresh garden trend for 2017 that emphasizes that it is all about how you combine modern and traditional styles. This can be done by placing modern elements in a traditional garden or by incorporating cold, traditional elements in a modern garden. NATURAL DYE GARDENS With an influx of homeowners investing in personal edible gardens the new trend in the grow-it-yourself movement is natural dye gardens. This involves growing plants that can be used to make dyes for coloring textiles, yarn, and clothing. These gardens contain vegetables, fruit trees and flowers that pollinate. A few examples of the type of plants are coreopsis, cosmos, Japanese indigo, marigold, blue cornflower, and purple basil for making dyes.
ACTIVE PLAY SPACES FOR ALL AGES 2017 is all about fun and this is reflected in play and entertainment spaces ranging from game courts, pet spaces, dining areas, hammocks, to wooden climbing structures. Active play structures are becoming popular- integrating a creative side with building and creating opposed to traditional climbing and digging in a sandbox. DWARF SHRUBS Homes are downsizing and so are gardens. Less space and a desire for easily maintained plants has welcomed the trend of dwarf shrubs- such as hydrangea ‘Bobo’ and ‘Little Quick Fire’. This is all about finding plants that are the appropriate size for your garden. HAUTE HOUSEPLANTS Bringing nature inside is at the forefront of 2017. The Fiddle- Leaf- Fig was the ‘it’ plant of 2016 but the upcoming year focuses on the Olive Tree. Other houseplants include a hanging kokedama, a Xerographica air plant, terrarium and even the darling trendy houseplants- the Tillandsias and Bromedliads. This trend has been referred to as the “yin to the yang of our technology-driven world.” SUSTAINABILITY TECH Smart controllers that are synced with your smart phone use weather data to determine how much water is needed for your garden irrigation system. These amazing tech tools are starting to include flow sensors that send a push notification if they detect a leak in your system and even a portal so that your contractor can manage your irrigation remotely. A tech driven trend that will ensure your garden is healthy even if you go on vacation.

Serious About Style 1.
What is your style of design as a
company? How would you describe your work? Our interiors obviously differ depending on the style and requirements of the client but we are inspired by European Contemporary design and Scandinavian style - this can be seen in the furniture we design and sell. We also like to use some classic and feature pieces that create interest.
2.
what inspires you to create and design
your works? We look at current trends as well as modern classic design - trends come and go but the classics are not called classic for nothing, they are timeless. Mies van der Rohes expression ‘Less is More’ is also a motto we live by - simplicity is restful and timeless too. We also factor in functionality and price.
3.
What are your favorite aspects of the
field you are in? The ability to create and give solutions to our clients - we all have creativity in us but to be in an environment where it can be outworked in an arena that you are gifted in is really special. We have a great team as well which is so important in the workplace.
4.
You have a shop to accompany your build and design work- what inspires the shop side? Can you explain how this ties in with your company and what people are most likely to find there? The shop was born out of the design company - we had designed so many items for clients that other people wanted too and our office at the time was always stacked with samples so we decided to turn it into a showroom. We have since grown our range. We are well known for chairs but we also have a range of locally made dining tables, coffee tables, bedside pedestals, desks etc. as well as good quality sofas and armchairs. Our ranges of scatter cushions, electronics, hooks, shelves and other smalls is growing too. Watch this space - we intend to push out a lot of new furniture in the next year.
5.
What design trends do you foresee for
2017 in architecture, design and interior? Natural elements are still going to play a big role in the trends next year - natural timbers (oak, birch and walnut) and raw concrete, the metals - brass, copper and iron, marble and similar stone, mottled glass. Then the colours of the forest - deep greens and teal, earthy tones and creams. Rust and terracotta are big too. Simplicity and refinement of design - again "Less is More". Big gorgeous works of art are a must. Indoor plants.
6.
Top work design tip for the L&s readers looking to freshen up their workspace? Do you have specific design recommendations and the best way to furnish a workspace? Storage and more storage. There is nothing worse than an untidy office space. If you have a simple desk get a credenza or pedestal or bookshelf. Baskets and containers work wonders. Offices are usually small and visually busy places so don’t go for too much dark timber or too many variations of timbers and colour - it can overcrowd a small space. Use open shelves for photographs, ornaments, plants and books rather than ugly files and piles of paper.
7.
Do you have any tips for our readers on the best ways of decorating the work and home space for Christmas? Lots of lighting! Lighting is so pretty, festive and calming. There is nothing better than sitting by your tree at night with the lights on and enjoying it. Our new online store is www.u3shop.co.za

E hope that you will never need to test our Runflat Tyron wheel protection system but those who have, are our best ambassadors.
They lived to tell the tale because they remained in full control of their vehicle during catastrophic tyre failure. Sadly the same cannot be said for many who could have survived if they had enjoyed the same protection. Why then, are they not fitted as standard safety equipment to all vehicles? We maintain that they should be. But you can’t see them when they are fitted so they don’t sell themselves. They don’t improve vehicle performance under normal circumstances and because, statistically, you will probably never need to test them, they are generally not considered a high priority sales feature.
When you analyse the risks and assess the benefits of the Runflat Tyron wheel protection system you will agree that this is almost criminally irresponsible. Emergency services and security forces around the world fit them as routine because they wouldn’t dream of going into action without them. Thoroughly tested and proven in even the toughest situations over many years, this is the most cost effective run flat solution the motor industry has been presented with. The Runflat Tyron wheel protection system allows you to keep driving on flat tyres with complete control of your vehicle until it’s safe to stop.
So, where is the value in this?
A flat tyre could leave you stranded and vulnerable, a blowout is potentially even more of a nightmare. The Runflat Tyron wheel protection system completely eliminates the risk associated with both scenarios.
Think about it. Why wouldn’t you choose to protect yourself, and those who depend on you, from potential harm if it was possible to do so?
The good news is, it is entirely possible, and at a price that is easily affordable. To find out more visit www.runflatplus.co.za or call Vic Simon on 082 954 4080
