from the Editor
O
kay – it’s time to take a break. This is the last edition of Life & Style for the year and we will be joining the general merriment that is the trend at this time of year as we celebrate tradition. Tradition is important. It is the glue that keeps us connected.
Many years ago in my beloved hometown of Benoni, I saw a performance of a play called Fiddler on the Roof in which Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman with five daughters, explained the notion of tradition and the customs of the Jews in the Russian shtetl of Anatevka in 1905, where their lives were as precarious as the perch of a fiddler on a roof. This was followed by a rollicking performance of a song called “Tradition”. In the song, Tevye, explains the roles of each social class (fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters) in the village of Anatevka, and how the traditional roles of people like the matchmaker, the beggar, and the rabbi contribute to the village. Overall, the song sets up the major theme of the villagers trying to continue their traditions and keep their society running as the world around them
changes. This was an interesting concept to come to terms with as a boy and, to a degree, I am still fascinated by the way society works. In our global village we are all as precariously placed as that fiddler on the roof and many of our traditions have evaporated but there are still a few that we can immerse ourselves in and Christmas is one of the biggest. Many would argue that it makes no sense at all, but that’s the beauty of it. You just have to go with the flow and enjoy the tradition. Let’s face it, peace on earth and goodwill towards men (and women…) is a whole lot better than the alternative. And as for the fake snow, reindeer, and that dreadfully hot red outfit with the white fur trimming that some poor soul is slow cooked in in every shopping mall in the country… well, it’s all part of the tradition. Roast turkey, walnut stuffing, glazed gammon, roast potatoes, Brussel sprouts, flaming Christmas pudding… and the temperature keeps rising. Aaah, tradition…you gotta love it. But apart from the hype and the fake snow there is something special about taking time out to enjoy precious moments with family and friends and to reflect on the blessings that we all too often take for granted in our lives. There may be a touch of sadness

too, remembering those who have passed on and the reality that our time here is fleeting. But it’s the traditions that are passed down from generation to generation that create a sense of belonging and comfort in the notion that through this shared human experience, we remain connected to something much bigger than ourselves. Here’s wishing you a wonderful Christmas, however you choose to celebrate it and we look forward to reconnecting with you in 2017 with renewed energy to continue exploring the best of everything in our rapidly changing village. The view from up here next to the fiddler is fantastic!

A Good Year for Andrew • Accept not being able to win the approval of everyone you meet. •The only lasting beauty is the beauty of the heart. • Do things that bring out your best, most magic self. •Receive life’s gifts. •Pass up the next chance to criticise. • Remember that it is better not to speak of things that you do not understand. •Protect yourself by remaining tranquil. • Rejoice in life; find the world beautiful and delightful to live in. •Learn to like yourself better. • See good conditions as a gift and a blessing rather than taking them for granted.

CHRISTMAS ESSENTIAL OILS & THEIR BENEFITS STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
C
HRISTMAS is almost upon us! It’s a time of family gatherings and gifts, festivities and feasts. It is also a time to delight your senses with wonderful fragrances. Who doesn’t love the smell of delicious roasts, scented candles and freshly cut Christmas trees? With that said, here are some of the best and most beneficial essential oils you can use to make your Christmas extra special:
Nutmeg Here’s another essential oil to help combat the inevitable Christmas fatigue. Nutmeg is an excellent sedative, helping reduce anxiety and depression, as well as alleviating stress and mental exhaustion. It also acts as an effective liver and kidney tonic, helping remove toxins from the liver and uric acid from the kidneys.
Pine Needle The wonderfully uplifting aroma of pine needle essential oil is refreshing and energizing. More than this, it is also highly beneficial for alleviating adrenal fatigue, boosting mood and improving mental clarity. Other health benefits of pine needle oil include the ability to reduce inflammation, protect against sinus infections, clear mucus and phlegm, treat skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, boost the immune system, fight fungal and viral infections, and even protect your home and body from a wide variety of germs.
Sweet Orange Sweet orange is an effective sedative, especially if you’re feeling anxious, angry or on edge! It also rapidly reduces inflammation, both internal and external, such as from the excessive intake of spices, fever, infections, side effects of antibiotics, gas, or the ingestion of toxic substances.
Cinnamon The spicy fragrance of cinnamon is warming, comforting and strengthening. Cinnamon essential oil helps to focus the mind, balance blood sugar and boost energy levels - especially when you’re back home after all that Christmas shopping! Frankincense Frankincense is a wonderfully relaxing oil and is ideal for keeping you chilled during the hectic run up to Christmas, and through all the celebrations. Use frankincense essential oil in your burner or diffuser to radiate a beautiful atmosphere of serenity when your nerves become frazzled or frayed, and to calm and soothe over excited children –or adults! Frankincense also has another name, Boswellia, which may be ringing a bell if you have ever struggled with pain. Due to its phenomenal antiinflammatory benefit, Frankincense can be used for a wide variety of inflammatory conditions from acne and skin blemishes, to cancer. Cloves The wonderful warm and full-bodied aroma of clove essential oil is useful during the Christmas season to mask bad breath, treat cavities (from too many mince pies), boost immunity, reduce stress, improve sleep quality, alleviate indigestion and nausea, and even act as an effective insect repellent! Ginger Ginger is especially useful for an upset stomach during the Christmas season. It is one of the best remedies for indigestion, stomach ache, dyspepsia, colic, spasms, diarrhoea, flatulence and other stomach and bowel related problems. Ginger can be used to treat food poisoning, intestinal infections and bacterial dysentery. It is also effective against nausea, motion sickness and vomiting.
Black Pepper Black pepper essential oil has analgesic qualities that make it ideal for relieving pain, stiffness, headaches and hangovers. If is also beneficial for digestion because it stimulates the whole digestive system, from the salivary glands in the mouth to the large intestine, including promoting secretion of digestive juices like acids and bile into the stomach to facilitate digestion.

It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties, is an excellent decongestant and expectorant and even helps boost the metabolism. Myrrh If you didn’t feel like you were in a nativity play with the earlier mention of Frankincense, then how about now with the added Myrrh? Myrrh is a powerful antimicrobial and antiviral. It also helps boost immunity, reduces excess mucous & phlegm, stimulates blood circulation and reduces inflammation. In fact, myrrh oil is a total body tonic that up-regulates all the systems and organs in the body! How to Use Essential Oils? IT TAKES TWO - THE POWER OF A COUPLE
may have been a challenging year in many people’s books, but having even the most daunting trials can be conquered in style when you’ve got a partner to help shoulder life’s burdens (and to celebrate the sweet successes too). Life & Style chatted to two inspiring local couples to find out what makes their partnerships so powerful…
TES & DYLAN JAHNIG
BETTER TOGETHER
High school sweethearts Tessa and Dylan Jahnig are a golden couple - young, dynamic, and family-focused with strong roots in the Ballito community. As founders of the hugely popular LINC Family Church, they manage to juggle raising their three beautiful girls with the demands of leading the massive growth and development of the church. Life & Style chatted to the Jahnigs to find out how they get the balance right. How long have you been together?
We will be married 10 years next year (OMG) So awesome.
Do you have any tips/ advice/ wise words on how to be happy and healthy (in body, mind and soul) for 2017?
We are the Lead Pastors at Linc Church.
Physical, emotional, spiritual, mental health is all connected so invest in all of these areas. Exercise, eat good food, make good choices, practice good thoughts, be grateful, read, rest, be part of a bigger story (this is key), assume the best of people, forgive, cultivate healthy friendships, love deeply, be present. Life is there for the taking, the good, the bad and the ugly so take hold of it and believe that THE BEST IS YET TO COME.
How does this influence your lives together?
Anything you would like to add?
Kiddies?
We have three beautiful and strong willed girls. 8, 6 and 3.
Where do you both work?
Working together has many perks. We love dreaming about what the church could be and how we have a role to play in leaving a legacy of healthy church for the next generation. We love creativity and we spend many hours looking for new and exciting ways to build church. Life is by no means perfect and working together can feel like everything is slightly chaotic and all in one pot. But honestly we wouldn’t have it any other way. Our lives are full and “gloriously messy” as Tes likes to say.
We really believe that life in God's design was meant to be enjoyed, not endured… So set goals and run after them, but DO IT WITH JOY. Add value to others, and you will be blessed.
How was your 2016?
2016 was a wild and full year. A year with some crazy highs, and some honest lows. We pack a lot into our years at Linc Church, and as we look back we truly are in awe of what we get to be a part of. We have incredible friends and family and a passionate team and together we have seen and done amazing things. A highlight for us was our trip to Israel, a dream come true. Words don’t adequately do justice to all we saw and experienced. The Bible came alive and we both walked away with a sense that the future God has for us is incredibly bright. It was an amazing opportunity to rest and nurture our souls. What a privilege.
If you had to share the “secret” to having a healthy family life what would it be?
There are no secrets. Anything worthwhile takes a fair amount of work and passion. We try to eat together as much as we can. The girls have quarterly Daddy dates and I try and be a present and fun mom. We don’t always get it right but we love family wholeheartedly. We share stories often and maintain that our home is a ‘HAPPY + HONEST‘ place. Dyl and I celebrate what we get to be a part of often, and bring our girls on the journey.
A healthy marriage?
Marriage is the best decision I ever made and the hardest road I’ve ever walked. That’s a tension right there but I would not choose to do life any other way. Be light hearted. Be fun. It’s so worth the investment and effort so go on an adventure together and build a life together. Dyl and I really do believe that ‘WE ARE BETTER WHEN WE ARE TOGETHER’.
Join Martin and Dee at the cottages....... for a little piece of Africa and warm hospitality.
A healthy work life?
We’re not defined by what we do, but by who we are… So be yourself and be passionate - the rest takes care of itself.
Members of the Illembe Chamber of Commerce Ballito
How to be a ‘good’ parent?
Ha, assuming we are good parents? We believe good parents are those who prioritise their marriage and togetherness above all else. Someone once told us “look after your marriage and your kids will be fine” and well it was great and long lasting advice.
What is ‘gratitude’ to you?
Extreme and specific thankfulness: a heartfelt attitude that finds things to smile about even when life is hard.
What advice can you give when it comes to practicing gratitude in everyday life and in upcoming 2017?
Gratitude is a way of life, and is a choice we make daily. Be committed to building a culture of thankfulness in your life and gratitude will be the overflow.

PIPPA & H A N K M CGRE GOR
A WI N N I NG TEAM
Ultra-athletes Pippa and Hank McGregor are a force to be reckoned with. Whether it’s dominating an elite trail-running race, conquering the Comrades Marathon, or winning a World Canoe Marathon title (Hank has done it 8 times) endurance is the name of the game for this over-achieving local sporting couple. Alongside their professional lives, the McGregors balance their dedication to racing with what really matters: raising their young son Thorsten. Life & Style found out what drives this winning team: How long have you been married? Since March 2013.
Do you have children?
Yes, a two and half year old son called Thor
What is your secret to being such a successful and strong couple?
The key to taking care of each other and our family is to take care of ourselves. We try as much as we can on a daily basis to work hard at our own personal goals as well as our family goals.
How would you describe yourselves as a couple?
We are both very active and support each other as much as we can to be the best versions of ourselves and to go out or way to achieve our goals even when it is tough or “admin”. We push each other and help each other. At the same time we always have time for a glass of wine or coffee date with each other.
What do you each bring to the table that makes you so effective as a power couple?
I guess it’s the fact that we have shared interests so it makes it easy to be with each other.
What is your secret to a successful marriage and family life?
Never stop inspiring each other to follow your personal passions and goals.
What do you love about living and raising a family on the North Coast?
I love that the people up here are so motivated to do well, there are lots of young people and families that are doing everything they can to live a successful and happy life. It’s so refreshing and motivating being surrounded by like-minded gogetters.
What is your favourite thing to do as a couple? Paddle together.
What advice would you give to the community for 2017?
Don’t be afraid to aim high, you don’t realise how strong you really are until you put yourself out there and try. And always make time for a coffee with your family and friends.
What have been your greatest accomplishments so far? Our son.
What are your goals for 2017? To be happy.
Anything you would like to add?
It’s the simple things. It’s about give and take and trust. We have shared interests, but we also enjoy doing things separately, so that each of us has our own space. That’s really important.
Goji Berries
REAL SUPERFOOD
T
he gorgeous little scrunched up fruit is the talk of the town! Dating back to the days of early Chinese medicine, they are considered both a fruit and herb, and have long been incorporated into healthy diets. They are typically found in Asia and Europe but have made their way into the homes and hearts of South Africans. Not only are they a great source of antioxidants, they also help reduce cancer risk and have been referred to as the “fountain of youth”.
What is the goji berry?
A raw goji berry is roughly the size of the tip of your pinky finger.
Health Claims:
These berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years with further claims that they are a natural remedy for diabetes, hypertension,
malaria and fever.
Other names:
Sometimes referred to as “wolf berries” and Tibetan goji.
Where you can find them?
Usually sold in dried packages or in bulk at food stores, specialty food shops and herbal stores.
What Do They Taste Like?
These berries have a natural sweetness with a slightly herby aftertaste. They create a lovely texture to meals due to their tiny seeds.
How Do You Eat Them?
Raw or soaked in hot water. They can also be added to trail mixes, smoothies, cereals, salads and yoghurts. They can be baked, cooked, steamed and processed after washed.
Price?
Because they are usually from organic and natural sources they can be a little expensive.
Healthy, Glowing Skin?
As with most berries, the Goji Berry is filled with betacarotene which helps promote gorgeous, healthy skin.
Protect Your Health ...
Another pro to eating Goji Berries are their ability to help boost the immune system and protect the eyes. They are an excellent source of Vitamin C and help in relieving flu-like symptoms.
Packed With Antioxidants
The oxygen radical absorbency capacity of Goji berries proves that they are great antioxidants.

Synthetic fabrics trap heat and natural fibres breathe. Bare this in mind with what you choose to wear on that humid blistering day out. 7.The half-moon bag is a total winning trend for the discerning goodie hauler. 8. We are all about bright beautiful colours to accentuate our summery mojo, the winning hue is orange through to tangerine and even teetering on coral and watermelon. 9. Want to keep cool during the day? Try wearing only lighter colours and stay away from black and navy. 10. If you have long hair you will know that sometimes it is unbearable to have a heavy layer smothering your neck. In order to avoid this-a simple small scarf or bandana can The “Universal Boss” of cricket be used to hold the hair up. Suitable for both ladies and gents. 11. he introduction of the new LC luxury coupe is a new, significant illustration of Lexus' dedication to create cars with exciting, emotional designs and exhilarating performance. In the space of just 27 years Lexus has had a transformative effect on the world's luxury car market.
A FLAGSHIP LUXURY COUPE The LC is a new flagship 2+2 luxury coupe for Lexus' global model range, not only showcasing the qualities of design, beauty, engineering and advanced technology that define it as a premium vehicle manufacturer, but also symbolising its ambition as a luxury lifestyle brand. DYNAMIC LUXURY COUPE DESIGN The LC's exterior design is immediately recognisable as being a masterful reinterpretation of the styling of the LF-LC concept, winner of an Eyes-On Design award when first revealed
at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. NEW GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE - LUXURY PLATFORM The desire was to preserve the LF-LC's defining low roof and hood lines, while ensuring the packaging allowed the LC to match the concept in accommodating a sport suspension and 21-inch forged alloy wheels. The teams had the benefit of working on a completely new GA-L (Global Architecture - Luxury) platform, designed for new generations of front engine/ rear-wheel drive Lexus models. POWERTRAIN EXCELLENCE The LC 500 is powered by Lexus' 5.0-litre normally aspirated V8 petrol engine, generating a maximum output of 351 kW, matched to a new close-ratio Direct Shift 10-speed automatic transmission - a first for a premium passenger car.

1929 Harley-Davidson – Found in toilet
We have all heard amazing stories of rare and expensive motorcycles found in barns around the world. However, this is the first time we’ve heard of a bike being found in a toilet. This is how the story goes…
in the late 1940’s a gentleman by the name of Mr Bicker had heard tales that a Harley, still in a wooden crate, was sitting in a remote mine in Western Australia. After an extensive search his father located the bike and it turned out to be in the men’s room of the mine. Best of all, the machine was a factory racer with overhead valves. Essentially a twenty year old motorcycle at the time, it was not considered rare but still a desirable ride. The owner at the mines was not able to get the bike running so he decided to sell it. Removing the wheels, the motorcycle was carted home in the back of his father’s car. After he got it home, Bicker was able to get the Harley started easily, maybe running it for the first time

since it was imported. On January 6th 2011, this rare 1929 Harley-Davidson fetched $125,800 at the Bonhams Vegas auction – not bad for a ‘toilet find’. But this was not just any Harley. This Peashooter was in exceptional original condition, perhaps the best known in the world. With its known racing heritage, the bike is in remarkable shape and people have thought it looks like it’s been in a time capsule since it left the Milwaukee factory in 1929.
MOST CLASSIC MOTORCYCLES SIMPLY LOOK ‘OLD’.
(Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) But a tiny handful still have the power to stop the traffic, decades after they were built. Brough Superior is one such brand; Crocker is another. This is a 1937 ‘Big Tank’ Crocker motorcycle, and it’s going under the hammer at Bonhams’ Quail Lodge sale. The estimate is a staggering US$270,000—340,000. Rarity plays a big part in that perceived value. Only sixty-or-so twin-cylinder Crocker motorcycles were ever made. And this design, powered by a one-liter (61 ci) V-twin, was the first American-built motorcycle to feature overhead valves—a few months ahead of the HarleyDavidson knuckle motor.
Unlike George Brough, Al Crocker brought in few outside parts for his motorcycles: almost everything was made in-house, even the carburetors. But unlike Brough, Crocker faced serious competition—from Harley and Indian—and this hastened the brand’s demise. Today, Crocker motorcycles are reportedly heading back to limited production. And as you probably know, Brough Superior is back in production too. Which brand do you think will endure the longest, second time round?
