KZN’S FAVOURITE READ
from the Editor
L
AST week I experienced a little of what Piet Retief must have felt like shortly before things unravelled for him in 1838.
Happily my moment was fleeting, but it did give me cause to consider. Picture the scene for a moment. There I was standing at the behest of the organisers of a politically inspired march against racism, at an intersection in the centre of Ballito. As the Chairman of the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, I had been selected to receive the memorandum of demands being carried through the streets towards us. I was not alone, but I was very aware that I was the palest member of the gathering and, no doubt, to some of those marching ebulliently towards us giving vent to their demands that “Racism Must Fall”, I was very much at the centre of their focus. Racism is a fairly low hanging fruit when it comes to issues that stir the emotions in South Africa. It’s obvious that the imminent local elections are creating an impetus among politicians eager to secure their tenure for another few years and what better way to draw attention away from the embarrassing
issues of service delivery, education, a collapsing economy, corruption and ineptitude at the highest level? So, racism it is and it isn’t hard to find examples to rally around. Ignorance, fear, frustration and stupidity causes people to react to situations inappropriately. Often this takes on racial overtones and in a country as sensitive to these issues as ours, this regrettably leads to further unhappiness. I have no desire to delve into the issue any deeper at this juncture. I deplore racism in all its forms and believe sincerely that we are far more nobly served as a nation by love and kindness. Our much respected Madiba showed us the way, but our current leadership seems to be following a different path and one can only pray that the next elections put us on a better trajectory. What we need now is economic growth…and then we can talk about progress. But back to the Piet Retief moment. There I was, waiting to receive a politically charged memorandum in the middle of Ballito while the traffic came to a standstill and the politicians played their games. After an interminable wait in the blazing heat while speaker after speaker addressed the crowd, each desperately trying to outdo the other with the same tired old rhetoric in an attempt to stir the emotions, the time came to sign the memorandum. The demands were predictable. The gist was – racism should be criminalised, outlawed and banished from the face of the earth. I couldn’t agree more.
I just wish that all this energy and excitement was being put towards ensuring better service delivery, more cooperation, more accountability and better governance. In Ballito we desperately need a proper taxi rank. We could also do with a police station and functioning municipal services in properly restored buildings. Road maintenance and malfunctioning streetlights is high on the agenda of needs and wants and a state funded high school would also be a lovely idea too, so we really aren’t short of examples of where energy could be spent to create a better Ballito for everybody. We are living in interesting times and I think they are going to get more interesting in the build up to the local elections later in the year. So, watch this space… One thing you can depend on is that Life & Style will keep you constantly up to date when it comes to issues you want to know about, on radio, in print and online. A SEA OF YELLOW AND GREEN STOPS THE TRAFFIC
Last week Ballito resonated to the sound of political rhetoric as the ANC led march against racism wound through the streets to the traffic intersection outside the Lifestyle Centre. There the traffic was brought to a halt in all directions while fiery speeches were delivered peppered with politically charged epithets designed to stir the emotions. Luckily discipline was maintained and there were no unpleasant incidents to mar the occasion. The Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthetwa, SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Zondi and Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, Dave Charles were on hand to receive a memorandum from the marchers demanding an end to racism on the Dolphin Coast. All the excitement was over by 2pm and the marchers dispersed leaving the traffic authorities to cope with the traffic congestion and frustrated motorists.

of students improved their results by two symbols from the trial results, which obviously indicate a tremendous effort by these students with the support of their teachers and families. Students and teachers, we applaud you for providing excellence on the academic front.
HE start of the school year is always special and exciting, filled with mixed emotions. Usually there are more parents with tissues realising that their children are ready to leave and just so excited to make those steps into their new classrooms, filled to the brim with the energy after a six week holiday. Often you hear the comment “my child was bored and couldn’t wait to get back to school”. In most cases it is an opportunity for children to get back to some form of structure and routine and tends to be a relief.
Looking forward in anticipation, we are currently expanding our Ashton footprint of buildings, and construction of a new Intersen Phase block of nineteen classrooms on the current Oxford Field, being Phase 1. Phase 2 of this expansion includes a Junior College multi-functional 600 seater hall.
The start of 2016 has been an immensely proud one and has certainly created a platform for one of Ashton’s most successful years. Our year-end results have been released and it is without a doubt our most successful in our short six year history.
The new sports fields adjacent to the school on the new land is currently under construction, and will boast a Senior cricket oval levels and IEB a total of 196 distinctions were attained. To top that 98,5% of the students qualified for a Bachelor Degree Pass. Collectively the results were outstanding and besides the students who achieved distinctions, the greatest reward and achievement was the improvement of the students in the lower range. A number

TAYING cool in the intensely hot and humid summer months at the coast is important for your dogs – especially if you take them to the beach. Dr. Stephen Samson shares his tips for keeping them safe. LIFE & STYLE: HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR POOCH FROM SUN EXPOSURE? Dr. Stephen Samson: The best idea is to keep your dog out of direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm, when temperatures are the hottest. L&S: But our dog loves the beach ... SS: Find a shady spot for it to escape to, like under an umbrella or tree. Swimming or wading in the water is also a great way to help it stay cool. L&S: What about drinking water? SS: A dog should have access to fresh water especially if it's playing in the heat. When you travel, bring a portable water bowl and make sure the water is fresh and kept around room temperature. Dogs have sensitive stomachs, so water that is too cool or too hot can irritate them. L&S:Can a dog get sunburned? SS: Dogs can and do get sunburned, most commonly on hairless areas or exposed skin, like the nose or ears, or the abdomen—near the hind legs, where fur is thinner. We recommend applying waterproof sunscreen to those areas. L&S: Sunscreen? Is that safe? SS: Yes, as long as you avoid products that contain zinc, which can be toxic if ingested by dogs. There are dog-specific sunscreens, but the over-the-counter brands— such as waterproof sunscreens formulated for babies—are just as effective when you follow product directions. L&S: Are dogs hot underneath all that fur? SS: Actually a dog's fur has an insulating effect, meaning it keeps the temperature lower on the skin than it is on the fur that's baking in the sun. That's why we don't suggest shaving off a dog's long hair in the summer.

ike Oberholzer and Josie De Charmoy are two of the most unassuming guys on the North Coast. The fact that they are about to fly to Australia to tackle one of the toughest open-ocean distance swims in the world comes as a bit of a shock to those who have seen them training in Thompson’s Bay tidal pool. After all, neither of them is in the first flush of youth and they don’t appear to be particularly chiselled or toned as one might expect competitive swimmers to be. But their eyes tell a tale.
Back in the day when you were invited to spend time in the bush courtesy of the State President, you occasionally encountered a different breed of soldier in those now long-forgotten canvass and steel military bases on “the Border”. Unless you had a death wish, you generally steered well clear of the
Recce. You could see it in the eyes – a kind of steel resolve tinged with madness – and you knew that this was a man not to be trifled with. Mike and Josie both have those eyes - that thousand yard stare that speaks of the hundreds of hours and vast distances covered through open water over the years as they have honed their skills and tempered their bodies. They have become machines. They were the first swimmers in the world to tackle the treacherous open ocean swim from Coin de Mer Island in Mauritius to the mainland recently and have now set their sights on competing against the world’s best distance swimmers in Australia. Highly regarded internationally and one of Western Australia’s iconic events, the Rottnest Channel Swim is an open water swim from Cottesloe Beach in Perth
to Rottnest Island 19.7km out to sea. Entrants compete as a solo, duo or team swimmers surrounded by a support network of paddlers, boat skippers and crew. The event, managed by the Rottnest Channel Swim Association, is held in February of each year and is Rottnest Island’s biggest day. Former Ballito resident now living in Australia, Andrew Stevens, will be joining them and all three will be swimming as solo entrants in what promises to be their toughest open water challenge yet. Will they make it? If I was a betting man, I would lay odds on the success of their venture, but we’ll keep you posted with crossings on Radio Life & Style before and after the race. We wish them bon voyage and the best of luck as they prepare for one of the most gruelling tests of endurance on the planet.

Pavlova You’ll Love It INGREDIENTS: •4 large egg whites at room temperature •1 cup of Castor sugar, also known as "Berry sugar" •1 tsp of white vinegar •1/2 Tbsp of cornstarch •1/2 tsp of pure vanilla extract •1/2 cups of whipping cream •Fresh fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, kiwi fruit, passionfruit, bananas, blueberries •1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
Cover a baking sheet with baking parchment. Whisk the egg whites with electric beaters until they just form stiff and shiny peaks. •Gradually add the sugar a couple of tablespoons at a time and whisk really well between each addition. When all of the sugar is used up continue whisking for 3-4 minutes or until the meringue is stiff and glossy and stands up in peaks, then whisk in the cornflour and vinegar. ` •Spoon the mixture onto the baking parchment and use a palette knife to make a circle about 20cm in diameter. Put in the oven, turn the temperature down to 120C/fan 100C/gas ½ and cook for 1½ hours. Turn the oven off and leave the meringue inside until completely cold (you can make this the day before and leave to cool overnight). •Carefully peel off the baking parchment and put the pavlova on a serving dish. Don't worry if it cracks. Scrape the vanilla seeds into a mixing bowl, add the cream and lemon zest and softly whip, then spoon onto the pavlova. Mix the berries, spoon the fruit on top of the cream, dust with a little icing sugar and serve. KNOW-HOW •Make the pavlova the day before and then whip the cream and prepare the fruit at the last minute.

Anthony Bourdain
Few people on the planet have lived the kind of globetrotting and adventure-filled life that chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain has. You can probably learn a thing or two from the man. 1.“Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don't have.” 2. “If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.” 3. “Don't lie about it. You made a mistake. Admit it and move on. Just don't do it again. Ever” 4. "What nicer thing can you do for somebody than make them breakfast?" 5. “Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks - on your body or on your heart - are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.” 6. "You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together." 7. “Your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.” 8. “Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom...is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go." 9. “I don't have to agree with you to like you or respect you.” 10. “Good food is very often, even most often, simple food.” 11. “We know, for instance, that there is a direct, inverse relationship between frequency of family meals and social problems. Bluntly stated, members of families who eat together regularly are statistically less likely to stick up liquor stores, blow up meth labs, give birth to crack babies, commit suicide, or make donkey porn. It can be – and often is – a term of endearment.” 22. “Without new ideas success can become stale.” 23. “But I do think the idea that basic cooking skills are a virtue, that the ability to feed yourself and a few others with proficiency should be taught to every young man and woman as a fundamental skill, should become as vital to growing up as learning to wipe one’s own ass, cross the street by oneself, or be trusted with money.”

WHY AN ANCIENT JAPANESE POWDERED GREEN TEA WILL BE 2016'S BIGGEST SUPERFOOD (AND KYLIE JENNER AND GWYNETH PALTROW ARE FANS)
I
T'S a centuries-old Japanese powdered green tea that’s a favourite drink of stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kylie Jenner.
Discovered by Buddhist monks wanting to stay alert during extended periods of meditation, matcha said to boost brain power without any of the jitters associated with other caffeinated drinks, and is being touted as a healthy alternative to coffee on the hip health scene. Packed with antioxidants, the concentrated green tea increase your metabolic rate, burn calories and lower both cholesterol and blood sugar. Nutritionists say that aside from pure water it’s one of the healthiest beverages around and, not only is it packed with antioxidants but it’s also rich in amino acids. Nutritionist Christine Bailey says, aside from pure water, green tea is arguably one of the healthiest beverages around when it comes to boosting performance - physical and mental performance. ‘Studies have shown it can boost working memory, enhancing brain cognitive function. Not only is it packed with antioxidants including flavonoids but it is also rich in the amino acid L Theanine which has been shown to aid focus and concentration by stimulating alpha waves in the brain. ‘This can help you focus on tasks at work more successfully and reduce anxiety while the lower levels of caffeine in Green tea can boost alertness.’ Thought to be approximately ten times more potent
than regular brewed green tea, matcha can raise energy levels, boost metabolism and help regulate blood sugar levels without the 'high and low' effect that caffeine can often have. Nutricentre nutritionist Shona Wilkinson explains: 'Matcha tea has a very high ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value. With its potent antioxidant properties it is a great product to help protect the body against free-radical damage. 'It also contains good levels of L-Theanine, an amino acid which is able to exert a relaxing effect on the body. The tea has high levels of chlorophyll too.'

Kanye West is reportedly working on a David Bowie tribute album. A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "He is determined to carry on David's work as a musical innovator. He says that the torch has been passed to him." The 38-year-old hip hop star has reportedly been spending hours in the studio working on covers to Bowie's songs, including hits like Rebel Rebel and Heroes, and he's also been rapping over the top of the Space Oddity singer's music with his own lyrics. GET HEALTHY... AND STAY THAT WAY STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
If every year one of your New Years resolution's is to 'get healthy' then this article is for you. It's time to realise that there are no quick fixes, magic pills or cure-alls. There just aren't! Health is a collection of simple good habits coupled with a positive mindset.
f
HERE ARE SOME OF THE WAYS YOU CAN GET HEALTHY AND STAY THAT WAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE: 1.Respect Your Body You only get one so treat it well. Having a high level of self-respect prevents you from polluting your body with junk food, drugs, smoke, alcohol and other nasties. Love the skin you're in, make wise choices and you'll immediately notice the benefits to your well-being.
2.Develop Willpower
Did you know that willpower is like a muscle? The more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. Focus your attention on what you want and doing the things that will help you get there. Yes, temptations will come and you will fail but that's ok! Never give up, because if you put your mind to it you can do anything.
3.Learn to Adapt
Our modern lives are full of challenges and unexpected change. The better you are able to cope before going into stress mode the healthier you will be. Practice regular stress-relieving activities such as yoga, pilates, art, music, reading etc and use adaptogenic herbs like reishi, chaga, ashwagandha, rhodiola and maca root to increase your adaptability.
4.Increase Your Knowledge
Understanding how the body and mind works is a critical factor in attaining true health. Read books and articles, listen to reputable health professionals and take courses to expand your knowledge and empower yourself in taking responsibility for your own health.
5.Listen to Your Body
With knowledge, comes intuition (also known as your sixth sense). Your intuition is something nature provided you with to help guide you towards a direction that is good for you. Everyone has the ability to be intuitive! To better develop this ability, stay a little hungry (don’t overeat), wake up without an alarm clock, practice mindfulness (i.e. notice how foods or certain activities make you feel), slow down and trust when something 'just doesn't feel right.'
6.Eat Real Food
I could never stress this point enough. Genetically modified, chemically exposed, sugar-laden, processed, and synthetically infused foods are just not good for our health! Period. What is good for you however, is a diet made up of foods that are as close to how you would find them in nature as possible. i.e. a variety of whole vegetables and fruit (NOT fruit juice), nuts, sprouts, raw dairy (if possible, otherwise organic), wild-caught fish and animal products that are organic and grass-fed.
7.Chew Your Food
Yes, we live life fast but that doesn't mean we should eat fast too! To help assimilate foods properly, we need to give our digestive system as much help as possible. This starts with eating slowly and chewing your food thoroughly (it should almost be liquid by the time you swallow). Not only will this help you eat less, you will also extract more nutrients from your food: Good for your health and your waistline!
8.Exercise Daily
No, before you get mad at me, this does not mean killing yourself for hours at the gym every day. What I'm taking about here is daily movement. The purpose of exercise is to promote good health. It should be something that makes you breathe deeply, sweat, and pump your heart. Exercise should be something you enjoy and that your body loves to do. Rebounding 10-15mins a day is a great example as well as playing with your kids, dancing, sports, swimming, running, hiking, HIIT etc. Mix it up and try out different activities. The main goal is to move your body and have fun while doing it.
9.Meditate
Meditation helps you let go of stress and reenergises you. It improves your willpower, helps you focus and even helps regenerate the cells in your body. If you can learn to meditate deeply for even 5 minutes a day, you will experience a whole new level of well-being. All you need to do is sit still , close your
eyes and breathe deeply, focusing your mind on your breath. Then as your mind wanders keep bringing your attention back to your breath. Simple. Even if you are 'bad' at mediation, you will still reap the benefits, so don't give up.
10.Value Your Sleep
Sleep is essential to our health and wellbeing. However, contrary to popular belief, the amount of time is not nearly as important as the quality. 4 hours of deep sleep can be far more beneficial than 8 hours of light, broken sleep. It is therefore, critical to learn how to sleep deeply. To do this, cut out all electronic devices before bed. Drink a cup of chamomile tea. Meditate or visualize on something beautiful. Take a warm relaxing bath with magnesium and calming essential oils such as lavender. Read a light and uplifting book, and consider calming herbs like passionflower and valerian.
11.Support Your Detox Organs Despite our best efforts we are in constant contact with chemicals and pollutants. The body can handle a certain amount of pollution and in some cases it may make your body stronger, but in general toxins are enemies of health. It is therefore wise to regularly support your detox organs with herbs such as milkthistle, dandelion and artichoke as well as zeolite powder, psyllium husk, aloe vera juice, magnesium and lots of probiotics! Drink pure, well filtered or spring water, eat organic, use natural body care products, and avoid unnecessary environmental and electromagnetic pollution.
12.Practice Gratitude
You may think this has nothing to do with health but a grateful heart is a happy heart. Learn to appreciate your family, your work, your peers, and your life. Let go of hurts and negative experiences. Enjoy life. I assure you that this change in attitude will benefit your health in ways you never imagined! Getting truly healthy will never happen overnight. It requires work and discipline, but the compensation
is definitely worth the effort. Here's to 2016 being the year you will achieve GREAT HEALTH, live a lifestyle that you can be proud of and THRIVE rather than survive in all you do.

INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY
T
HE 2016 school year may only be a few weeks old but grade 12 girls across the country are already turning their thoughts to the social highlight of their final year as schoolgirls: the Matric Dance.
Many schools schedule this gala event as early as the end of the first term, so it is not too soon to start planning how to translate your daydreams of making a style statement on the Big Night into reality. The first step is to decide on your dream look, which can be generally categorized as Girly/Romantic, Neutral/Natural, Classic, or Creative/Dramatic. Once this allimportant choice has been made, you will find it far easier to co-ordinate your hair and accessories, adding that elusive touch of glamour that will transform you from pretty to pictureperfect princess. If you choose the soft flowing lines of the Romantic style, an unstructured, tousled hairstyle will complement your look beautifully. Go for fashionable iron, wand or brush curls that fall gently to caress your shoulders or, if your hair is too short for this style, you might consider the extra expense of clip-on extensions that match your hair colour and texture a worthwhile investment. Catching up one or both sides of your hair with a couple of pretty, sparkling
clips is an equally-attractive option. If simplicity is your style of choice, the Natural look, characterized by neutral tones accented with pops of colour, will allow you to be captivating while still feeling comfortable. Make-up should be nude and neutral while the hair should be soft, with braids and twists for a stylish finish. Up styles can add a touch of glamour but, like the Romantic look, these must appear loose and unstructured. If you dream of dazzling your date with classic chic, complete your ensemble with simple, stylish accessories and sleek hair; up styles must have sharp, decisive lines with nothing fussy to detract from the overall impression of uncluttered elegance. Dramatic, creative personalities are usually drawn to colorful, eyecatching creations and if this is you, don't make the mistake of playing safe with your make-up and accessories or your appearance will lack harmony and fall short of your dreams of making a memorable entrance. Your Matric Dance is a major milestone in your school life and it is well worth taking the time to plan ahead to create a look that will express the 'real you' with taste and style, setting you free to concentrate on making magical memories of an unforgettable evening.
There are 3 steps to awareness. It starts with your body – do not persist in walking badly, poor posture, thoughtless movement improve with awareness – then move deeper – to your mind and its activities, thoughts and imaginings. The thoughts still as the awareness increases. The third step is to become aware of your feelings, moods and emotions – only then can they be understood and dealt with. Yoga is active meditation and the start to everything. The slow conscious body work is the beginning. You cannot be given it as a Christmas gift, no one else can do it for you, and you cannot dump the responsibility on anyone else. It has to be done by you and for you. It is so natural and simple – you just have to begin. Do not put it off for one more wasted day. The understood nurtured body is capable of enjoying both earthly pleasures and silent serenity. The unattended body is capable of neither and is in a state like sleepwalking. It’s the first step to inner transformation – all that is good grows and all that is bad starts disappearing. It is your Birthright to enjoy heightened activity and relax into total silence – most people experience neither. Movement releases the accumulated stresses of body and

mind – inactivity breeds further stress. Yoga enables you to participate joyously in everyday life and to relax into silence. Yoga shakes up your ideas and makes you respond to the new! Learning is an alive process – forget about what you think you know and find out how what you thought you knew is inapplicable – learn a new as though a child. It’s a process of renewal. Finding out that work needs to be done can be a positive uplifting experience, don’t fear it. In reattaching ourselves to our bodies we reattach ourselves to the responsibility of living a life guided by the undeniable wisdom of our body. Self study is a big task. Start by making your body your greatest ally and the calmness of an open mind and a happy heart are not far behind. The task is great but the rewards even greater. Have a wonderful year free of aches, pains and ailments!

THE THORIUM CAR – TOP
27 January - 9 February 2016
MEMORABLE
MOVIE MOTORCYCLES
SIMPLY AMAZING!
I
F your car was powered by thorium, you would never need to refuel it. The vehicle would burn out long before the chemical did. The thorium would last so long, in fact, it would probably outlive you.
That’s why a company called Laser Power Systems has created a concept for a thoriumpowered car engine. The element is radioactive, and the team uses bits of it to build a laser beam that heats water, produces steam, and powers an energy-producing turbine. Thorium is one of the densest materials on the planet. A small sample of it packs 20 million times more energy than a similarly-sized sample of
coal, making it an ideal energy source. The thing is, Doctor Charles Stevens, the CEO of Laser Power Systems, told the media recently that thorium engines won’t be in cars anytime soon. “Cars are not our primary interest,” Stevens said. ”The automakers don’t want to buy them.” He said too much of the automobile industry is focused on making money off of gas engines, and it will take at least a couple decades for thorium technology to be used enough in other industries that vehicle manufacturers will begin to consider revamping the way they think about engines. “We’re building this to power the rest of the
world,” Stevens said. He believes a thorium turbine about the size of an air conditioning unit could more provide cheap power for whole restaurants, hotels, office buildings, even small towns in areas of the world without electricity. At some point, thorium could power individual homes. Stevens understands that people may be wary of Thorium because it is radioactive — but any such worry would be unfounded. “The radiation that we develop off of one of these things can be shielded by a single sheet off of aluminium foil,” Stevens said. ”You will get more radiation from one of those dental X-rays than this.”
EASY RIDER
A landmark in American film history, Easy Rider captured the restless and angry energy of a youth culture that turned to alternative lifestyles as a means of escape, while at the same time exposing the discord and hatred that separated generations. Cast as outlaws in a modern landscape, Wyatt, aka “Captain America,” and Billy — imagined by the screenwriters as incarnations of Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid — ride their piston-powered steeds across the South, hoping to reach New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras. THE MOTORCYCLE USED: Four used cop bikes — Harley-Davidson HydraGlides — were turned into “choppers” by Cliff Vaughns and Ben Hardy: two were built as emergency-replacement bikes.

R184 900* THE GREAT ESCAPE
The Great Escape’s most celebrated scene — in which Steve McQueen, playing a WWII POW, eludes his German pursuers by jumping a section of barbed-wire fence on a motorcycle — was, of course, a Hollywood contrivance, added to secure the participation of Steve McQueen, whom the producers knew was a speed-junkie and gear head. The studio, for obvious reasons, would not allow the young star to do the actual stunt; the jump was made by stuntman Bud Ekins, who would later double for McQueen behind the wheel of the Mustang GT in Bullitt. It’s hard to believe that this film sparked so much controversy (it was officially banned in the U.K. for fourteen years) on its release: the outlaw bikers that invade a small California town exhibit a level of criminal behaviour that now seems almost quaint. What’s much easier to understand is how a leatherclad young Marlon Brando and his motorcycle — a sexually charged image of youthful restlessness rebellion — became an enduring part of film history. Seriously, has any other American film actor shown so much out-of-the-gate brilliance as Marlon Brando? Having turned in electrifying performances in A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata! and Julius Caesar, Brando give his bikergang leader Johnny Strabler a soulful menace that radiates off the screen.
