KZN’S FAVOURITE READ

from the editor

I

have never been one to go with the crowd as far as fads is concerned. I am not wild about social media and I have never been tempted to dump a bucket of water on my head, forward a chain letter to a “friend” or snap an unflattering selfie to rise to a challenge, no matter what the action proposes to support. But last week we featured a radio interview with a group of estate agents from Comprop who had decided to introduce the Random Acts of Kindness movement to Ballito and they challenged us to join them. I was interested to find out more – so I did, and I support them wholeheartedly now. Established in 1995 as a non-profit organization, The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is a resource for people committed to spreading kindness in the world. They provide a wide variety of information and resources on their website all free of charge. The Foundation is privately held and funded. They accept no donations, grants or membership dues. They have no religious or organizational affiliations; they simply encourage the practice of kindness in all sectors of society to make the world a better place.

As people from different cultures and from all walks of life join the movement to spread kindness, we are creating a powerful, synergistic action throughout the world and by getting involved you can help to bring kindness and compassion to our local and global communities – and make the world a better place! It is now painfully obvious that we can’t rely on politicians and community leaders to sort out the mess that we have inherited – each one of us now has to do our bit. Essentially it is all about “doing unto others what you would have them do unto you”. It is about recognising how your behaviour affects others, and holding yourself accountable for your actions. Kindness is contagious. It is truly a win/win situation. The person you are being kind to benefits through your help. You feel good for having helped someone. And the world is a better place through your actions. Never underestimate the impact of a single act of kindness committed without expecting anything in return. It’s powerful stuff, folks! So, where do you start? Here are a few ideas, but feel free to add to them as you see fit. •Send someone a hand

written note of thanks. •Make a card at home and send it to a friend for no reason. •Buy a lotto ticket for a stranger. •Put some coins in someone else’s parking meter. •Buy a coffee for the team working on the roads •Walk your friend’s dog. •Organise a cake/ jumble sale to raise funds for the Ballito Specialised Rescue Services •Give a compliment about your waiter / waitress to his / her manager. •Send someone a small gift anonymously. •Stop and help someone change a flat tyre. •Let someone jump the queue at the bank. •Treat a friend to the movies for no reason. •Give a huge tip to someone when they least expect it. •Give up your seat for someone, not just an elderly person. •Talk to a homeless person and have a “normal” conversation. •Pick up some rubbish on the beach •Compliment a work colleague for their excellence. •Buy a tin of cat food for the Feline Feral Fund in Ballito •Give another driver your parking spot. •Give a piece of

Goodbye from Cinnamon and Silk...

T

o all those who frequented our little shop over the years – this is a short and bitter sweet goodbye. Cinnamon & Silk will be closing at the end of this month. Short - because we choose to be positive and focus on all the good things that we learned over the years and all the beautiful people who visited and loved our little shop and our staff. Bitter - because goodbyes are sad, we have made some wonderful friends and been able to support some talented men and women making beautiful things. We have witnessed people falling in love, celebrating life, interviewing for important new positions, learning new skills, celebrating new babies, preparing for their wedding day and so much more.

I always said one day I will write a book and call it Coffee Shop Chronicles and maybe someday I will. My mom and I have learned so much from observing and serving people, so much good and sadly so much bad! Sweet - because we believe that when one door closes another opens, perhaps an overused cliché, but one we believe to be true nevertheless. We look forward to a beautiful 2015 and wish you all the best. I am so proud to have worked with you Mom, Aurelia, Fortunate, Xoliswa, Nellie, Ningi, Dolly, Khethiwe and Lihle. WE WILL HAVE A CLOSING DOWN SALE STARTING ON Thursday 12th until stocks last and items will be marked down up to 50% less. Please come shopping and give us the opportunity to say goodbye!

The Algorithm That Can Spot the 'Beauty' In Your Holiday Snaps - And Tell You Which Selfies to Delete

R

esearchers have revealed an algorithm they say can spot the 'beauty' in photographs - and what makes a great selfie. Yahoo Labs in Barcelona say their software can spot the best holiday snap, and even analyse your selfies. They say their work could improve the quality of snaps online - and used 10,000 photographic portraits rated by humans to learn what we look for. 'Digital portrait photographs are everywhere, and while the number of face pictures keeps growing, not much work has been done to on automatic portrait beauty assessment,' the team wrote in the open source journal Arxiv. The say the rise of the selfie has meant a huge increase in the number of pictures people take. 'Selfies' have become a phenomenon, and recent studies show that images with faces are more popular (+38% 'likes' on Instagram) than other pictures in online social networks. 'Portraits are also used in web user profiles, in news articles, to represent celebrities and public figures, and they are an essential part of all kinds of IDs.' The researchers found that in fact, the person in the picture is often irrelevant. 'We find that race, gender, and age are largely uncorrelated with photographic beauty,' wrote the researchers, led by. 'Aesthetic score is related to sharpness of facial landmarks, image contrast, exposure, homogeneity, illumination pattern, uniqueness, and originality,' they add. They team say their algorithm is

significantly better than other machinebased attempts to recognise beauty and provides some curious insights into the nature of photographic portraiture. 'We find that the beauty of a portrait is linked to its artistic value, and independent from age, race and gender of the subject.' The single most important factor is the sharpness of the image.

But other important factors include the contrast between the face and background. Pictures of females also tend to be more memorable, as well as brighter and post-processed, while pictures of males tend to have darker colors - and men smile less than women in portraits. They began with a set of 10,000 photographic portraits that have been rated for beauty by humans on a scale from 1 to 10 and annotated with words and phrases that describe each image. The team first analyse each image using face recognition software that

determines the age, sex and race of the main subject in each portrait along with the position of the face worked out from the relative coordinates of the eyes, nose and mouth. They then created algorithms that measured how well each image achieved standard photographic techniques of composition, exposure and lighting. These included the arrangement of objects within the image, the distribution of lighting within the image and the sharpness of the picture. They also measured the exposure quality, contrast and jpeg compression along with the contrast between the face and the background. The final step used the human annotations to classify the emotional polarity of each image, whether positive or negative and assessed the originality of the image compared to others. The team's algorithm then determines which of these metrics correlated with the human beauty rating. They say it can do this incredibly successfully. 'We also show that a classifier trained with our features to separate beautiful portraits from non-beautiful portraits outperforms generic aesthetic classifiers.' 'In our future work, we plan to broaden our framework by extending our database to include portrait images 'in the wild', exploring portrait aesthetics with a more challenging context,' they said. 'Physical/demographic properties such as gender, eye colour, glasses, age, and race show very low correlation with image beauty, suggesting that any subject, no matter his/her traits, can be part of a stunning picture,' conclude Redi and co.

property investing is a firm favourite in KZN and specifically along our beautiful coastline. However, as convincing the returns of late have been so too is the misunderstanding of the general public regarding the participation of this. Too many make the mistake of "lumping" any and all types of property into the same crude ball expecting stellar performance. The plethora of property options being shoved under investor’s noses includes fractional ownership (on anything from resorts and game farms to executive apartments), property syndication, timeshare (believe it or not) and let’s not forget good old residential property. Don’t get me wrong; many people have, and may even continue to make, very handsome returns on these

investments, but if we are looking for exposure to a growth asset as an alternative to equities, and are expecting some reliability on the returns, the prize has got to go to listed commercial property. One of the main reasons listed commercial properties has so much going for it is because it generally has contractual leases of three years or more with developed businesses with solid balance sheets. This means that the biggest risk (tenant default) is effectively mitigated and rental income (main driver of yields) is adequately secured. This asset class, although expected to deliver returns of about two percent lower than equities over the long term, has shown its mettle of late and has a very deserving place as part of a welldiversified portfolio. Property generates returns from two sources; rental income and capital growth. We are in a developing economy where economic growth is expected and as it expands so too does business activity increase triggering the need for space. As the rental increases (whether purely by inflationary pressures or an increased demand for prime space) so too will the capital value of the property increase. Using equities and property as growth assets in your portfolio is an efficient way of generating sound returns from the market regardless… no wait, because of the current economic cycle. If we understand that markets are forward looking and future priced, then it stands to reason that share prices

increase before the economy improves (almost in anticipation of). This is different to property where rental income streams and capital appreciation are dependent on a thriving economic environment to benefit. As the economy ebbs and flows through the inevitable business cycles, one can allow their exposure to property to take over from where equities left off and continue to deliver sound inflation beating returns. Here is a breakdown of the most popular ways of accessing listed property as an investment (source www. persfin.co.za): 1. Property unit trusts. These are not normal unit trust funds, but investments listed on the stock exchange. As with a unit trust fund, you can invest smaller amounts of money in companies that specialise in investing in property. Like unit trusts, too, property unit trusts are highly regulated. 2. Property loan stocks. You invest in a company with a portfolio of properties listed on the JSE Securities Exchange. Unlike property unit trusts, property loan stocks can borrow money to buy properties and do not require a management company. 3. Normal unit trust funds that invest in property companies. 4. Life assurance endowments where the underlying investments are in property. As with any asset class, the right mix and balance is critical for investment success. Where equities and property should be providing the growth in your portfolio, the role of risk management is given to cash and bonds.

FOCUS ON THE LAW Michelle Kruger

WHEN YOUR MARRIAGE HAS COME TO AN END IS DIVORCE LITIGATION THE ONLY OPTION? CONSIDER RESOLVING THE ISSUES IN DISPUTE IN A MORE EFFICIENT, COST EFFECTIVE AND SPEEDY MANNER BY EMBARKING ON DIVORCE MEDIATION.

I

was recently featured on a show on Radio Life & Style where we spoke about Divorce Mediation. I had a number of people approach me thereafter and comment that they were under the impression that Divorce Mediation was relevant only to people getting divorced who were able to communicate sensibly with each other and who were in fact on speaking terms. They were unaware and in fact surprised, that this process is highly recommended in situations where people are unable to resolve issues between themselves or unable to communicate with each other without causing friction or sparking conflict. I need to emphasise that Divorce Mediation is particularly appropriate in situations of conflict as the parties can rely on the experience and expertise of a skilled negotiator, acting as Divorce Mediator, to initiate and guide the mediation process to achieve a settlement to the benefit of both parties. The following questions are some I am frequently asked which may enlighten you regarding the process: WHAT IS DIVORCE MEDIATION? Briefly, divorce mediation amounts to constructive discussions and negotiations between parties getting

divorced, assisted by a Divorce Mediator, with the aim of achieving an amicable settlement of all the relevant issues like all moveable and immovable assets belonging to the parties e.g. furniture and household effects, vehicles, investments, pension, property/land owned, etc.), maintenance and issues relating to the children. WHY DIVORCE MEDIATION AS OPPOSED TO DIVORCE LITIGATION? - You are able to save literally hundreds of thousands of rands by achieving a settlement at the onset of the divorce matter by way of Divorce Mediation. Opposed divorce litigation is extremely costly and a large portion of your estate will end up in the hands of your legal team/-s for legal services rendered over a lengthy period of time during the litigation process. You want to avoid this; - Negotiating a settlement at the onset by way of mediation has proven to deliver a far more desired outcome to settlement than after outstretched, often aggravating and costly litigation; - The divorce process is expedited by achieving a settlement by way of mediation and thereby avoiding lengthy opposed litigation; - The abovementioned factors cumulatively have the effect of reducing

the emotional stress and trauma that parties will naturally endure when going through a divorce and will enable people to embark on the healing process sooner, affording them the opportunity to get their lives back on track in the shortest possible time frame. Are there 200 BILLION Earth-like worlds in the Milky Way? Stars have an average of two habitable planets in orbit, study claims

T

o date, astronomers have found about 1,000 planets in the Milky Way, with just a handful of these thought to be potentially habitable. But, in the hunt for Earth-like

planets, a new study says we should be optimistic - as there may be more than 200 billion in our galaxy alone. The remarkable declaration is based on the estimate that the average stars has two Earth-like planets in orbit, and the Milky Way has about 100 billion stars. The researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) made the finding using a 200-year-old method. Known as the Titius-Bode relation, it predicts the existence of planets based on their sequence around the sun. It was correctly used to predict the orbits of the dwarf planet Ceres and ice giant Uranus in our own solar system. In this case the team look at multiplanet systems that were known to contain at least three planets, as detected by the Kepler space telescope. 'We use a generalised TitiusBode relation to predict the periods

Australian scientists say our galaxy could be teeming with habitable worlds (illustration shown). If each star has an average of two planets, there will be 200 billion. They base this on a 200-year-old method called the Titius-Bode relation. This was used to predict some planets in our own solar system

of 228 additional planets in 151 of these Kepler multiples,' the researchers wrote. Using this, they say there are an average of two planets in the habitable zone of each star. Also known as the goldilocks zone, this is the distance from a star where liquid water, crucial for life, can exist. The Kepler space telescope is biased towards seeing planets very close to their stars, that are too hot for liquid water, but the team extrapolated from Kepler's results to make their findings. This would suggest that are hundreds of billions of potentially habitable planets in the galaxy that could support life. 'The ingredients for life are

plentiful, and we now know that habitable environments are plentiful,' said Dr Charley Lineweaver, from the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Research School of Earth Sciences. He adds, though, that it remains a mystery why we have still not made contact with an extraterrestrial race, if life is so abundant. 'The universe is not teeming with aliens with human-like intelligence that can build radio telescopes and space ships. Otherwise we would have seen or heard from them,' he said. 'It could be that there is some other bottleneck for the emergence of life that we haven't worked out yet. Or intelligent civilisations evolve, but then self-destruct.'

MARKET YOUR BUSINESS SIMPLY AND POWERFULLY Sean Dercksen

A

s an entrepreneur, you know that you need to constantly market your business effectively in order to stay ahead of the competition. Through this marketing, you want to attract and retain enough clients to maintain a steady business growth. Now marketing is broad and there are many things that one can do. In order to become more productive it is best to focus on the activities that generate the best results and the most revenue. This approach can effectively help your time management, especially if you are a small business. Take a step back from your marketing activities and apply these

three simple, but powerful approaches moving forward. Use the 80/20 principle Typically, twenty percent of your clients will produce eighty percent of your sales. In line with this, twenty percent of your products or services will yield eighty percent of your revenue. Using this principle to your advantage, ensure eighty percent of your marketing focusses on the vital twenty percent of your clients. Without this core twenty percent of clients or products / services for that matter, your business will not grow as effectively as it can. Focus on your target market By focussing on a specific target market versus a blanket approach to anyone that will respond to your marketing, you can reduce risk as well as the cost of your marketing. Zoning in on the prospects within your target market that will more likely respond to your marketing will hugely improve your conversion rate. In essence, this means that you will get better results from less marketing. By knowing where to reach your prospects or target audience in the largest numbers possible, you can more efficiently market yourself.

Offer something unique If you are all things to everyone, then you probably do not have anything unique that you offer through your business. To get ahead of your competition, take a common product and deliver something un-common with it in your target market. When you move away from “the ordinary,” you begin to specialise in something – this holds more value to the end-user. The result; more and more people will notice your business, relate to the added value of your uniqueness and they will respond. With more effective marketing activities, you could free up time to spend on other aspects of business like relationship building. Being the face of your business, you could work on getting people to know you better, like what you offer and trust your service levels / delivery this is known as the relationship cycle. Marketing for any business is a must, so keep it simple by delivering more effectively using this approach. When you see results, keep finetuning as you focus on the right areas.

Fresh Mussels with Crunchy Sourdough Bread Michael Ovens - The Beach Hut

This recipe is very simple and all about sourcing good quality ingredients. If you can’t find fresh Parmesan for example, please don't use the processed stuff, it’s better to exclude it from your dish. Ingredients:

1kg - a big bowl fresh mussels (never frozen!) from a good fishmonger or fresh of the rocks 100ml - about half a glass white wine 2 large cloves - a large pinch fresh garlic (not the pre-chopped stuff) 250ml - small carton cream 100g - small block parmesan shavings (not the pre-grated stuff) 6 rashers - small packet bacon (must be good quality) 50g - small pack chives 4 thick slices sourdough bread or any good quality bread you fancy

Method

Preparation:

- Lay your bacon on a wire rack and cook it under the grill until crispy. - While this is happening, chop your chives as finely as possible, wrap and store in the fridge. - Shave your Parmesan with a potato peeler and store in the fridge. - Peel and finely chop the garlic, wrap and store in the fridge. - Now your bacon should be ready-chop into strips and put to one side.

Cooking:

-Take a large pot and put it on a high heat, the pot must have a lid that fits correctly. If the lid has a small air vent hold in it, plug this with a price of Glad Wrap or tin foil. It’s very important the steam doesn't escape when cooking the mussels. - After 3 or 4 minutes the pot should be hot enough. Put the mussels, wine and garlic in a bowl and mix a little. - Add the mussels to the pot and

quickly put the lid back on, shake the pot whilst holding the lid to help evenly cook the mussels. - While the mussels are cooking, char-grill or toast your bread so it is ready at the same time as the mussels. - Take the lid of and move the mussels around 2 or 3 times over the next 5 or 6 minutes, when the mussels are open, add the cream, leave the lid off and allow the cream to come up to the simmer. - Now taste the sauce to make sure everything takes OK. - Divide the mussels and sauce between 4 bowls, sprinkle the Parmesan, bacon and chives between the 4 bowls and serve the bread on the side with butter and enjoy!

As soon as you get your mussels home get them into the sink and under cold water. Fill the sink with cold water (half fill with water if water restrictions .If you have some old ice in the freezer get it in there to help cool them down. Clean and "debeard" take off anything on the outer shell of the mussels. Make sure they are all closed, if some are open give them a firm tap and see if they start to close. If any are still open after cleaning

and tapping discard them as they are already dead. Now store them in a sealed container in the fridge (not in water)

Stop That Binge Jogging! Three Times A Week Is Best For You... And Too Much Is As Bad As Doing Nothing If your exercise regime sees you do nothing all week then go racing along the boulevard several times at the weekend, here’s something to stop you in your tracks. Light jogging is healthier – and safer – than intensive exercise, scientists have found. A study shows that jogging three times a week is best, for between 20 and 48 minutes each time. Heavy joggers are as likely to die as those leading a sedentary life, according to the scientists, while light joggers going at a slow or moderate pace had the lowest rates of death. The research appears to confirm growing evidence that extreme exercise may be bad for

you. Previous studies have suggested that activities such as marathons, ‘iron man’ distance triathlons and very long distance bicycle races may cause structural changes to the heart and large arteries, leading to lasting injury. In the latest study, Danish researchers tracked 1,098 healthy joggers and 413 healthy but sedentary non-joggers for 12 years. The study, which examined hours of jogging, frequency, and the individual’s perception of pace, found that strenuous joggers were as likely to die as sedentary non-joggers, while light joggers had the lowest rates of death.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class goes under the knife

17

Martin Pretorius

S

outh Africans don’t really like compact multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) any more, but the rest of the world certainly doesn’t share our dislike for small-ish high-roofed hatchback-wagon mash-ups. So while we’ve all been buying sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for their perceived off-road ability, things like the Renault Scenic, Citroën C4 Picasso and Volkswagen Touran are selling like hotcakes in Europe and Asia. Mercedes-Benz, always eager to exploit every market niche, has cottoned onto this fact years ago, quietly making bucketloads of money from their interpretation of this genre (the B-Class) all over the world. In fact, the B-Class is one of Mercedes’s most important cars, being second only to the larger C-Class in terms of sales volumes. Now, to do battle with a slew of newcomers (from among others, their arch-rival BMW’s new 2-series Active Tourer), the second-generation B-Class has received its mid-life nip-and-tuck. Like its predecessors, the B-Class is based on the hardware of their frontwheel-driven A-Class, meaning that the oily bits, floorpan and suspension are drawn as-is from the smaller hatchback. As far as face-lifts go, the B-Class update is fairly subtle, but noticeable nonetheless. There are restyled bumpers at the front and rear of the car, new tail-lights and alloy wheels distinguish it from the older model, and there are restyled headlights in front, with integrated LED “eyebrows” to bring its face in line with the current Mercedes-Benz styling language. FullLED headlamps are now available as an optional extra, with clever adaptive technology to ensure optimal lighting regardless of ambient conditions.

The engines and gearboxes are carried over largely unchanged, which means a selection of four engines and two gearboxes. The line-up starts with the B200, powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-charged petrol engine which delivers 115 kW and 250 Nm, followed by a B200 CDI powered by a 2.1-litre turbodiesel delivering 100 kW and 300 Nm. Both B200 derivatives are available with either a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 7-speed twin-clutch automatic. Next up is the B220 CDI, where the 2.1-litre diesel is tuned to deliver to 125 kW and 350 Nm. It comes only with the automatic gearbox, as does the rangetopping B250 AMG-line. In spite of that AMG-linked badge, this isn’t really a sporty car, even though its 2.0-litre turbo-four generates a hot hatch-like 155 kW and 350 Nm. Its AMG-ness is purely down to stiffer suspension, a revised steering system, a body kit and some very tasty 18-inch alloy wheels. The interior also received detail changes, with a few new pieces of switchgear, revised centre console display and upgraded materials on the dashboard. It’s pretty much a carbon copy of the new A-Class inside: pleasing to look at, logically laid out and easy to operate – apart from the (updated, and with optional Garmin sat-nav) COMAND multi-media interface, which still need some time to get used to. But the B-Class face-lift isn’t only geared towards upgrading the cosmetic elements: it also adds some extra abilities to the pioneering safety- and driver assistance systems introduced when the current B-Class first hit our roads back in 2011. Most notable of these is the Collision Prevention Assist system, which monitors the road ahead

equipment), and automatic climate control another R7 000. This is a German car after all, and the Germans all charge an arm and a leg for cool toys. But it is nice to know that you can have high-tech extras, should you want them (and can afford them). The B200 petrol (manual) starts at R388 300, running up to R448 000 for the B250 AMG-line, with the two diesels filling the price gap between them. For what it’s worth, these prices are roughly in line with the recently launched BMW 2-series Active Tourer, although they are both much more expensive than the Volkswagen Touran or Citroën C4 Picasso. Then again, neither of those two can lay claim to that premium status, leading to the exclusivity so sought-after by young, trendy and affluent families.

There’s even room for a BOET!

of the car and alerts the driver (through a series of beeps and a warning light in the instrument cluster) if it detects a possible accident situation. This system gains a new name (Collision Prevention Assist Plus) and adds the ability to autonomously apply the brakes, should the driver not respond to the warnings. Other niceties like lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring is obviously available as well, allowing the refreshed B-Class to remain one of the safety leaders in its class. Of course, the B-Class carries a premium badge, which means that it carries a premium price tag. It also means that many of the nice things are optional. For instance, those clever LED headlights will take an R11 000-sized bite out of your bank account (apart from the B250, where it is standard

The New Opel ADAM

11 - 24 February 2015

It’s a Technological Dream Come True 21st century motoring offers a world of options beyond the obvious and the new Opel Adam has an impressive array of really cool features for the tech savvy driver.

The ecoFLEX Drive Assist system monitors energy consumption by onboard equipment like air conditioning and the rear demister in addition to fuel consumption, indicating to the driver the most efficient gear change points on an adaptive basis, allowing ADAM to be driven as efficiently as possible at all times. City Mode Steering allows the twomode electric power steering to react with increased power assistance when the driver engages the system, making city-bound manoeuvring and parking especially in tight spots that much easier and effective. Appealing to the connected lifestyle of the target audience, Opel’s IntelliLink infotainment system is available as standard in ADAM JAM and ADAM GLAM. IntelliLink allows for fullyintegrated smartphone connectivity for a hands-free infotainment experience

linked to the power and adaptability behind a smartphone environment. Featuring a 7-inch high-definition touch screen display, the intuitive IntelliLink system is linked to the multi-function steering wheel and with the premium quality sound system provides the ultimate entertainment experience in the Opel ADAM. The Bluetooth and USBpowered setup includes audio streaming as well as photo and video playback. Much like the latest smartphones, IntelliLink also includes pre-loaded apps for an even more integrated driving experience. These include Stitcher™ which streams the latest podcasts and radio shows for a mix of news, music, sports and talk show content customised to the user’s preferences; TuneIn Internet radio; BringGo; and support for Siri when an Apple iPhone is connected. So now you can stay tuned to Radio Life & Style wherever your travels take you! For more info and to arrange a test drive contact CMH Umhlanga 115 Flanders Drive, Mount Edgecombe Tel 031 582 6300

Recently launched in South Africa; the all-new Mazda3 wins

Family Car of the Year in Scotland

T

he all-new Mazda3 has made a dominant showing at the ‘2014 Scottish Car of the Year’ (SCOTY) Awards, winning the hotly-contested 'Family Car' category. Its victory in one of the most significant categories in the SCOTY awards reinforces just how compelling a proposition the all-new Mazda3 makes for both private buyers and company car drivers. The recently launched in South Africa, all-new Mazda3 received judge’s praise on styling, driving dynamics, quality, performance and efficiency. Mazda is no stranger to the SCOTY awards; in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 won the 'Safety' award, and in 2013 the Mazda6 2.2-litre topped the 'Eco' award honours list. The all-new award winning Mazda3 is designed and built to the highest standard of performance and reliability. Mazda Southern Africa had backed up this standard with a 3-year unlimited kilometre factory warranty. And for complete peace of mind motoring, a 3-year roadside assistance,

a 3-year service plan and a 5-year Corrosion Warranty are also included. “The efficient all-new Mazda3 has superior design, quality interiors and dynamic driving prowess. The new SKYACTIV** technology delivers solid performance and low emissions in both hatchback and sedan and the KODO-Soul of Motion design language merits that the Mazda3 impresses within a highly-competitive segment. We are very proud to be brand custodians of this now award winning compelling model in South Africa.” Says David Hughes – MD of Mazda South Africa **SKYACTIV is the umbrella term for Mazda's range of next-generation technologiesincluding gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, body and chassis - developed under Mazda's Sustainable Zoom-Zoom vision to provide both driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance. Test drive the award winning Mazda 3 at CMH Mazda Umhlanga: 89 Flanders Drive, Mount Edgecombe, Umhlanga. Tel 031 502 5565
