I

was up in the Big Smoke last week, catching up on things in that part of the world and revelling in the convenience of technology. When it works for you, it really makes a difference. I am the first to admit that I am Old School in this regard and so I am probably way behind when it comes to taking full advantage of the digital age but I am catching up fast.

This was the first time that I used my smartphone to book and pay for airline tickets and it worked like a treat. Not only could I book the flights for my return journey, but I was even able to select what seats I wanted. Instead of printing out boarding passes, I had the boarding passes stored on my smartphone which scanned perfectly – how cool was that! Hiring a car was just as quick and convenient and I hit the traffic in Joburg in record time. That’s where the convenience ended. The morning traffic from Lanseria Airport to Sandton was typically slow and go and I used the opportunity to catch up on the various radio stations available to commuters in

Gauteng. I love radio - I love the companionship and intimacy of the medium but I really battled to find a station that I could relate to. And that’s when technology dealt me another ace. I paired my smartphone to the car radio via Bluetooth and was able to listen to the Voice of Ballito – Radio Life & Style – through the chaos of the morning traffic. I did the same on the afternoon drive to the airport and then remained connected in the airport building via earphones until the flight was ready to depart. And all of this audio streaming used surprisingly little data. We have commissioned a system to measure exactly how much data an hour of digital streaming of Radio Life & Style uses since we changed to a new service provider in the USA that has streamlined the process with algorithms that create massive economy in this regard. I think we will all be amazed when the results are with us in a day or two and I’ll certainly keep you informed. Talking of useful technology, have you tried Zapper, yet? Zapper is a mobile app that makes payments and

e-commerce quick, simple and secure. With Zapper you can pay bills in a matter of seconds and quickly log in and sign up to websites, without using a keyboard. I have been using it lately and I am a real fan. Here’s how it works. When you find a Zapper QR Code on your bill, scan it with Zapper and confirm the amount to be paid. It even works out what percentage tip you want to include. Your payment card details are stored on your phone using secure encryption. No more hanging around for a card machine…you pay and go at your convenience! Another technological innovation that we are exploring at the moment is a system that will allow you to watch radio interviews live on your mobile device or computer in real time. We will, in effect be turning the radio studio into a little television studio giving you an even better entertainment experience.

easy steps when preparing to sell your property.

1) Research a qualified agent or

reputable agency. Find the agent who will be prepared to manage your property throughout the process from valuating, marketing, selling and compliance certificates, whilst keeping you posted all the way until the final conveyancing process and the handing over of keys to the new owner. We at Harcourts Dolphin Coast pride ourselves in making life easier for all our Sellers .

2) Your agent with local property experience and knowledge will establish the market value of your property by making use of other property statistics in your area, then together and in consultation with yourself, conclude a market price for your property. Overpricing is the one fatal mistake you cannot make when selling your property. 3) Advise your bank of early cancellation of your mortgage bond to avoid unnecessary penalties.

With great power comes great responsibility, but try telling that to someone working in the advertising field in the early 20th century. By today’s standards, the ads here are outrageous, but advertising hasn’t really changed tel: that much. There are codes of conduct and laws to abide email by, but modern ads still manage to spin a tall story. How does that instant credit work and does any bank really go the extra mile to help you … does any slimming product effortlessly shed the weight…does that washing powder wash whiter than white and how about that toothpaste… nothing has really changed.

E have recently celebrated our IEB and CIE matric results and seen students reach the end of their school journey. Now early February, parents with students going into Senior College are faced with the challenges of choosing a school for Grade 8.

Some of the many choices are: Co-educational or monastic, boarding or keeping them close to home for the short 5 years of high school before they leave for university. Let’s start off by saying there is a school for every child. Happy students will flourish and reach their potential in any educational institution. Locally, Ashton International College is unique in that we offer the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Independent Examinations Board (IEB) curricula side by side. The students have the opportunity to choose between the Cambridge and IEB curriculum at the end of their Grade 8 (Form 1) year, and then choose six elective subjects and Life Orientation. Should they choose the Cambridge Curriculum, they are prepared over a two year period to write the external IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) at the end of their Form 3 (Grade 10) year. Once they have achieved this qualification, they can choose to either carry on with their AS and A Levels for their matric exemption,

or change back to the IEB curriculum for Form 4 and Form 5. IEB students will follow the curriculum from Form 2 to matric. Both these qualifications are recognised by tertiary institutions internationally. We continue to celebrate the 100% pass rate in the IEB, CIE AS and A Levels as well as the IGCSE examinations. At Ashton we protect and uphold our founding Christian ethos and principles. We also continually strive for academic excellence, find ways to enrich the curriculum and make learning relevant in our fast changing world. Ashton is a Value driven College as opposed to a rules driven College and place great emphasis on each individual student to be inspired to be the best version of themselves. Students are encouraged to do the right thing, not because they are expected to do so, but because of who they are. It all results in character. We recently hosted our Open Day and it was evident that there is a definite demand for the Cambridge International Examinations curriculum. We would like to thank those parents who attended and spent time on campus learning about the true Ashton family and our ethos. For those who missed these dedicated Open Days, we extend an open invitation to visit us any day of the week.

GOOD FOOD TO GO -FOR CATS & DOGS VENUSHA MOODLEY-NIRMAL

Humans have become a species of convenience, and I guess that is understandable due to the demands of our everyday lives. However we are now seeing a trend to better nutrition for ourselves as the pressures of life take a toll on us; we need to eat healthier, to be healthier. This is also one of the worse things we have done to our domesticated furbabies, we have exposed them to the convenience diet; the diet that comes out of a bag or a tin. So, if we are moving towards a healthier and fresher diet why not do the same for our fur-babies?

C

ats and dogs were around decades before the dry food revolution came about and I can assure you that they were not eating a diet rich in carbohydrates. Dogs descend from the wolf clan and most were hunters, cats were solely hunters. While dogs can have a percentage of cooked vegetables and fruits, cats need a high protein diet to thrive. The pet food industry has seen a rise in the fresh and raw food market and this is great news for pet parents that want to feed a nutritious species-appropriate diet while still having the convenience at hand.

Just as a diet of convenience has affected our health [heart disease, diabetes etc.] it has also affected our fur-babies health and quality of life. The increase in cases of pet obesity, diabetes, kidney disease,

hyperthyroidism and even urinary infections is astronomical and all these conditions can be prevented, managed or even reversed by a speciesappropriate balanced raw diet. If you are sourcing your raw diet from a reputable supplier then it is balanced to provide all the nutrients and vitamins required to ensure a healthy pet. The two main aspects of a raw diet that assists with disease prevention are 1).protein content and 2).water content. Most raw diets are minimum 70% protein [dogs require 70% protein and cats require 80% or higher]. Have a look at your dry food ingredients label, you will be lucky if any brand has more than 40% protein and I am referring to pure protein not animal byproduct or animal meal. Water content is more important for cats than dogs as without water, cats will succumb to dehydration very quickly. Cats derive their water from their food and as they do not have a thirst drive they will not meet their water requirements from purely drinking from a bowl. Raw food has about 70% water [depending on the meat source] and dry food has between 5-10% water. Water flushes out

the bladder and kidneys and prevents the dreaded kidney disease as well as cystitis and crystal formation. If you haven’t been feeding raw meat, you are probably shocked by now that I am suggesting you feed raw meat to your fur-babies. I have been doing so for over a year and the benefits are amazing. My 4 cats have shiny matt free coats, excellent muscle tone, excellent body condition scoring, no hairballs [hairballs are not natural for cats], clean strong and healthy teeth with no plaque buildup, no more food associated allergies due to gluten and excessive amounts of energy. The most common misconceptions about the raw diet are that your furbaby will get sick from salmonella or get worms. Cats and dogs are physiologically designed to consume raw meat and that has not changed despite us domesticating them. However, make sure you choose a reputable supplier that follows the appropriate hygiene; fresh meat will not have salmonella. Freezing the meat for a minimum of 48 hours will kill off any parasites if present.

The best thing you can do for your fur-baby is to research. Just as you would research your own health or medical issue, do the same for your furry BFF; you owe it to him to make the right choices for his wellbeing. 3LittleAngels Pet Nutrition is a Ballito based company that specialises in feline nutrition. We offer nutritional assessments to assist in treating specific medical conditions [through diet] as well as weight management programmes. We also supply a pre-made raw diet that is designed by a pet nutritionist and made by a food safety microbiologist.

LIVING ROOM DESIGN IDEAS

Many modern living room ideas revolve around subdued colors, but not this one. For the most vivid and vibrant personalities, this design embraces bold and highly contrasting colors that will start a conversation. The symmetrical design relies on two matching, contrasting pieces of furniture that frame a large, comfortable couch. A backdrop pattern, which could come either from wallpaper or actual painting on the wall, brightens up the room and adds a distinct accent to the focal area. Symmetry is consistent in the tables and lamps as well, balancing the room and creating a sense of order that will work best for homeowners who prefer straight lines, symmetrical design, and total balance.

PARADISE LOST – OR JUST ANOTHER DEVELOPMENT DAVE CHARLES

When you defile the pleasant streams And the wild bird's abiding place, You massacre a million dreams And cast your spittle in God's face. ~John Drinkwater

T

HERE is, in the heart of Ballito, a small dense green haven where many wild creatures have found sanctuary from housing development that has destroyed the natural habitat around them. This is the last refuge of the bush babies and blue duiker, genet and vervet monkeys and countless other smaller mammals in the area. It is where the forest birds roost and is home to countless reptiles, insects and amphibians. Some of the trees here are very old and there is a sense of presence, like a natural cathedral. It is a special place.

But those who own the title to the land on which this sanctuary remains, have decided that it is now time capitalise on their investment and unless the environmental impact assessment rules against it, this will happen very soon. Triplo4 Sustainable Solutions is conducting the environmental Basic Assessment (BA) Process for the proposed Avondale Residential Development on

(Erven 1432, 1433 and 1447), Ballito, KwaDukuza Local Municipality, KZN. This is what they have determined so far.

PROJECT MOTIVATION

With major investment and development under way, the appealing residential suburb of Ballito on KwaZulu-Natal’s Dolphin Coast to the north of Durban is becoming increasingly sought after among primary home buyers. While Ballito remains primarily a holiday town, figures show that in excess of 50% of homes are now permanent residences and this is increasing rapidly as more residential developments are up and coming as more people choose to move to the Ballito area. The construction of the proposed residential development will ensure continued employment in society. The development will yield a positive contribution to the socio-economic value of the site and impact positively on surrounding property values. It will enhance the landowner’s property value as well as the general aesthetics of the site. A positive decision on the project will allow for the provision of housing to accommodate a vast amount of households which will, in turn, lead to the additional spending and investment in local shops and services by the additional households, thereby, boosting the local economy.

SPECIALIST EVALUATION

An Ecological Habitat Assessment, Heritage Impact Assessment and Wetland Delineation and Functionality Assessment were conducted, and the following is a summary of the findings of the proposed site: ECOLOGICAL HABITAT ASSESSMENT: The proposed development is located within the Indian Ocean Coastal Belt Biome and CB3 KwaZulu-Natal Coastal Belt Grassland (Mucina and Rutherford, 2006). The site also contained a host of native species. The majority of natives were identified

as Least Concern (LC) with regards to conservation according to the national SANBI redlist. Some of the most commonly occurring native indigenous species included: Albizia adianthifolia, Bridelia micrantha, Cyclosorus interruptus, Hewittia malabarica, Psydrax obovata and Trema orientalis. No protected species where identified at the proposed Avondale residential development site. Various other native species were identified; however none warranted further protection based on their SANBI Red List status of Least Concern. The threat level posed by the proposed development is considered low as it has undergone rapid urban transformation and there will be little disruption in terms of ecosystem functioning, provided that rehabilitation measures are undertaken. The proposed development is feasible, provided the recommendations that are outlined in the Ecological Report are adhered to. This will minimize impacts on the flora and fauna in the site and preserve the structural integrity of the system. Provided that all recommendations are followed, the development will not cause any significant environmental degradation. I wish I could believe that.

There is a mandatory Public Participation Process giving you the opportunity to register by 06 March 2017 should you wish to have a say. There was apparently an advertisement to this effect in the “Dolphin Coast Mail Newspaper” on 15 February 2017. The wild things have no voice…but you do. In terms of the NEMA Regulations (GN 982) you are invited to formally register as an Interested & Affected Party.

HERE'S WHY DENIM IS SET TO DRIFT FROM YOUR WARDROBE TO YOUR WALLS Denim Drift, the paint giant’s Colour of the Year 2017, is a smoky, calming grey-blue.

A

N accompanying palette of 10 complementary blues, from Indigo Shade, resembling dark denim, to palest shade Clock Face, invites you to combine them to create any effect you like — from crisp colour blocking to a looser, more painterly style.

Every year, Dulux’s Global Aesthetics Centre brings together a colour-forecasting team of design experts from all over the world. “The process begins 18 months ahead of announcing the colour,” says Marianne Shillingford, Dulux’s creative director. “Paint colour trends go in three- to five-year cycles, so we have to choose one we think will be relevant for the next few years.” Major social trends are factored in when the panel determines not only the colour but its precise tone. “At our meetings, faded denim blue kept cropping up.” The consensus among the team, says Shillingford, “was that this restful shade is relaxing in our increasingly hectic, technology-dominated lives where there is no dividing line between our work and personal life”. The denim shade was also picked for its cross-generational, democratic appeal to young and old no matter what they earn or do. The word “drift” was used because the chosen shade “seems to drift from being definitely blue to blue-grey”. As with all paint shades, it looks different depending on which colours it’s paired with, and on how light hits it. “Putting it next to wood in a warm chestnut brown brings out the grey in it, makes it cooler — but combine it with greys and blues and it looks richer,” says Shillingford. “The more natural light there is in a room, the richer this blue will look.

It’s the effort and thought that matters. 7.Have an old scrabble board game that is gathering dust? Or missing letters? Use the remaining ones to make a unique photo frame image. Line up the letters you wish to use, and stick them onto backdrop you like. Then place it in a frame that you can decorate. some super glue. Add some freshly picked flowers, and VOILA!

5. Make little treat parcels. All you need here is an exam pad, and some cute ‘love’ themed stickers. Fold the paper into little envelopes and fill them with chocolates and sweets. A perfect gift for your work

WHY ANTIOXIDANTS COULD HARM YOU

IS ALL WELL AT ALBERLITO HOSPITAL?

A

RECENT article in a local newspaper has got Ballito talking. The Article is headed: “Good things to come at Alberlito Hospital” and it introduces the community to the new General Manager of the hospital, Dr Augusta Dorning. In the article, Dr Dorning says that she will be enhancing all front line services as well as patient experience.

From the growing body of evidence and anecdotal information related to serious issues that I have received lately, I made contact with Dr Dorning to enquire about the situation. She was unable to discuss these matters with me, citing patient confidentiality, but she indicated that she believes there is no problem with patient care at the hospital, despite the issues that I tried to raise with her. In the very recent past, two people that I know well have suffered life threatening

ntioxidant supplements could speed up ageing and raise your risk of an early death, a new study warns.

The vast majority of US adults take pills - from Vitamin C to polyphenols - in a desperate bid to keep their immune system stealthy, their skin fresh, and their energy levels high. But a new study has found this constant intake of chemicals can throw the body's stress-response system offkilter. The news come amid a swathe of studies questioning the benefits of supplements. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that out of 18 randomized clinical trials into fish oils, only two showed that there were any health benefits from taking tablets regularly. What's more, it's thought that we would need to consume a lot more fish oil than we do right now to see any health benefits. Consuming this much fish oil in tablet form can have side effects, however, including fishy breath, belching, nausea, cramps and even nosebleeds.

complications following routine procedures at the hospital. Social media streams that I follow have featured unflattering allegations against the hospital of late and it would appear that all is not well at Ballito’s only private hospital. I have only visited the hospital on rare occasions and have had one minor procedure that went well so my personal experience has been favourable but I am concerned by what has come to my attention recently and am compiling a dossier that I will present to hospital authorities for further investigation. If you have experienced problems with treatment received at the Alberlito Hospital, please contact me by e mail at editor@ lifeandstyle.org.za with the details. These will be treated with the strictest confidence and will help to present a clearer picture for Dr Dorning to work with.

Mitsubishi ASX - Re loaded

ONLINE

22 February - 7 March 2017

Mercedes Benz G 650 LANDAULET Strictly limited: open-air luxury both on- and off-road.

Mitsubishi’s popular compact crossover, the Mitsubishi ASX, is getting a refreshed look for the 2017 model year.

T

he new Mitsubishi ASX lineup consists of five derivatives all featuring the frugal and highly reliable 2.0 MIVEC petrol engine. The 2.0 MIVEC engine is well known for being very fuel efficient and Mitsubishi’s popular CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) designed to be more sensitive than a standard automatic gearbox and optimises engine output to deliver the best possible fuel consumption under all driving conditions.

The ASX is one of the safest vehicles in its class. Mitsubishi GLS derivatives feature LED running lights, electronic active stability and traction control (ASTC) and hill start assist (HSA) as standard.

Luxury features abound in the ASX, including Bluetooth with voice control, cruise control, a multi-function steering wheel, electric windows, air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, rear park distance control and automatic lights as standard on all models. GLX and GLS derivatives also offer a fulllength panoramic glass roof, keyless operation, a full colour touch-screen infotainment system, heated leather seats in the front, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, as well as a rear-view camera. Over and above all these luxuries, two GLS derivatives feature powerful Rockford Fosgate sound systems, whilst the CVT version of the GLS boasts highimpact discharge lights. The Mitsubishi ASX continues to score highly as a practical crossover, thanks to its 1,193 litres of storage space with the rear seats lowered and its 195mm ground clearance.

A

G-Class like never before: With the G 650 Landaulet, Mercedes Maybach presents the open-top G Class - the

first off-roader from the MercedesMaybach sub-brand. With its V12 engine, portal axles, electric fabric top and exclusive equipment specification in the rear compartment, this special allterrain vehicle is limited to 99 units. The Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet is surely the most exclusive form of stylish

open-top motoring.

Like all other variants of the G-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, too, will be produced

by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. The open-top four-seater will celebrate its world premiere and sales release at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. The Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet is manufactured in left-handdrive only and will therefore not be introduced to the local South African market.
