Now, there is plenty of water in the system but DOCRRA is battling for support. When the next civic crisis hits, will we still have a Ratepayers Association to fight for us? DOCRRA has called for an emergency meeting on Thursday to which all residents of the region are invited to discuss the future

of the Association. The meeting will start at 6pm at Simbithi Country Club and you are urged to be there or we run the very real risk of the Association disappearing which would have serious implications at a time when government is looking hard for easy opportunities to raise revenue. Back to the water issue. We reported on the level of the Hazelmere Dam on Monday morning as we do every morning on the Morning Drive Show on Radio Life & Style, and were taken to task by a listener who questioned how we could possibly report that the dam was 101.41% full. It’s a reasonable challenge if you don’t understand how dam levels are measured. You might equally be perturbed by the fact that Mearns Dam is 106.24% full, Ixopo Dam is 105.23% full and Henley Dam is 102.23% full. What this means is that water from the aforementioned dams is flowing over the dam walls and the height of the high water mark is measured to determine the percentage volume. Regular users of the Ballito Promenade have been upset to see the recent construction of a security fence outside the La Montagne Hotel that will close off that section of the promenade to the public. Not many people realise that strangely, there are some coastal properties in the region that have historically secured property rights up to the high water mark – so they effectively own what used to be called the Admiralty Reserve, now the Coastal Protection Zone. The La Montagne property is apparently one of these and so they are technically within their rights to fence off their property to protect their guests from unwanted attention. But the Promenade is a major attraction

OT very long ago Ballito and all who sail in her were facing a water crisis of epic proportion. The Hazelmere Dam had just about run dry and drastic water rationing measures were on the cards. A system of fines for unauthorised water usage saw the town in an uproar and if it wasn’t for the intervention of Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association DOCRRA, we might well have experienced real civil insurrection in these parts.

for locals and tourists alike and so, understandably, the KwaDukuza Municipality has taken a dim view of this. Unless there is a meeting of minds to find a solution that works for everybody, things could get untidy. The Ratepayers Association DOCRRA has been in discussion with both representatives from First Resorts the company that owns the La Montagne Hotel and the Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu and both parties have expressed a desire to work out a deal that will secure the hotel and keep the promenade open. Life & Style is following developments closely and will keep you updated on Radio Life & Style and on our Facebook page. We will be at the DOCRRA emergency meeting at 6pm this Thursday 9th March at Simbithi Country Club and I urge you to come and support this initiative too. It’s the only mechanism we have to protect our interests when it comes to rates increases and service delivery. Without your support, it cannot work for you. The choice is yours. HE DOLPHIN COAST RESIDENTS AND RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION DOCRRA is holding an urgent public meeting at Simbithi Country Club on Thursday at 6pm to determine support for initiatives about to be launched to protect the interests of the local community.
There is a growing trend for Ratepayers Associations to be wound down due to lack of support, with Umhlanga/ La Lucia and Durban North Associations having recently collapsed, leaving their communities effectively unrepresented in local government matters. Community leaders on the Dolphin Coast are appealing to residents to attend the meeting in a show of strength to add weight to DOCRRA’s mandate to protect the interests of the public and ensure that rates are used judiciously to clean, green, protect and upgrade the area and to keep rates increases in check. The KwaDukuza Municipality has expressed its commitment to work with DOCRRA to achieve this should there be sufficient support from the public.

This unique event, presented by Surfing South Africa and endorsed by the Department of Sports and Recreation, has helped launch some of South Africa’s top surfers past and present. The South African Grommet Games is a transformational and development tournament that gives young surfers from around the country an opportunity to compete in their
respective districts in a major surfing contest. The youngest surfers in the contest will compete in the U8 division with the oldest participants taking part in the competitive U16 boys and girls group. Boasting enormous talent and ability the Ilembe Surf Riders junior team will compete with over 120 surfers from across the country in a competition considered to be the breeding ground for talented young surfers. With the International Olympic Committee’s recent decision to include surfing on the sports program of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the tournament could be the first step to shaping Olympic aspirations for the worlds next wave of premier surfers.
10 UIT 10 Skryfbehoeftes Is on the Move
10 Uit 10 Skryfbehoeftes
is moving. Why is this news? Well, since they arrived on the greater Ballito scene, they have become the dominant supplier of stationery and office equipment in the region. No mean feat when you consider the power of the big brand outlets in the area. But 10 Uit 10 Skryfbehoeftes has established a reputation for dependability and old fashioned quality service that continues to win customer confidence and that translates to really good business. The fact that they also offer free delivery to business clients in the area makes their service even more attractive. Wilma Greyling is the heart and soul of the operation and she brings a passion and commitment to the business that is tangible. It’s the hands-on nature of the business
that appeals. At Tien Uit Tien Skryfbehoeftes, every customer receives the attention they require and the wide range of stationery and office equipment in stock is extensive. There is an old fashioned approach to doing business here that is refreshing and the unusual name is appealing to those with whom it resonates. Now, to provide an even more comprehensive service, 10 Uit 10 Skryfbehoeftes is moving to an even more convenient location. On the 1st of April they will open their doors to their super new store on Crowthorne Corner, Garlicke Drive, Ballito. We wish them continued success in this fast-growing region to which they are making a valuable contribution as a company of excellence.

KWADUKUZA MAYOR IN SEARCH FOR REVENUE TURNAROUND PLAN SPHE NGOBESE
K
waDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu has asked his administration to come up with a meaningful revenue turnaround strategy that will deal with wasteful expenditure and enhance revenue regeneration.
CAPTION LEFT TO RIGHT : JENNY VAN BUUREN (SENIOR COLLEGE HEAD); MARYIA PIATROVA AND BUSINESS STUDIES TEACHER, DENEIL HABIG
A
SHTON’S Maryia Piatrova was announced by Cambridge International, as the top student in the 2016 IGCSE (International General Certificate in Secondary Education) examinations in Business Studies. Maryia achieved a 94% average for Business Studies in her final examinations which are marked in the UK, the highest average in South Africa. “I am totally shocked, but this is inspiration to be top student in the world when I write my AS Levels at the end of the year,” said Maryia.
Equally delighted is the Cambridge Business Studies teacher, Deneil Habig. “This is why I am in education – to see a student flourish and achieve to their full potential. Maryia is a conscientious, diligent student, who has set herself very high goals, and I look forward to taking her through AS and A levels,” said Deneil. Ashton offers the Best of Both Worlds with the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) curricula – a unique offering.
“I am giving officials thirty days to come up with a working plan that will help cut unnecessary spending and provide efficacy on revenue regeneration”, said Mthembu. He was tabling his R 1.3 billion Adjustment budget statement before council that was unanimously welcomed by political representatives from the opposition benches, with some saying it has far exceeded their expectations. The Adjustment budget is a formal way by which a municipality may revise its annual budget during the fiscal year. ON OVERTIME Mthembu pointed out a number of factors that he believes contribute to overspending, over-time being one of them. He said council is spending excessively on employee overtime and that there are inexpensive solutions like the Community Works Programme and the Expanded Public Works Programme that officials can tap into rather than spending on overtime. ON ENERGY LOSSES He said the municipality lacks adequate oversight and the energy losses committee needs to be held accountable.
“We are calling on the energy committee to do its job, it must report and advise council on how to deal with energy losses”. A Meter reading strategy will also form part of the broader revenue turnaround and cost cutting regime. EMPLOYEE AUDIT He also expressed a need for an employee audit that will report to council, the day-to-day responsibilities and duties of all employees. “In each and every business, I want to know what officials do and what they are responsible as we no longer want to lose money”

THE LIFESTYLE CENTRE -
AN EXCITING NEW DIRECTION FOR BALLITO
A
t a presentation to the Ballito Lifestyle Centre tenants on Wednesday, 22 February, Bruce Rencken unveiled plans to redevelop the centre that has been at the heart of Ballito since 2003. In the face of massive change to the retail environment on the North Coast, Rencken presented a number of facts and figures as well as the new vision and strategy for the centre that had tenants excited about the future.
The reality, with the launch of the expanded Ballito Junction, is that there will be a significant impact on both Ballito and the Ballito Lifestyle Centre. Rencken believes that the growth in Ballito will, in time, allow both the Lifestyle Centre and the Junction to co-exist, each providing their own unique offering and catering for different shopping needs and providing a different shopping experience. “There are, however, some immediate concerns,”
he stated, “the two biggest being the impact on the road network at the entrance to Ballito and the ability of the market in the short term to support this massive increase in retail space.” Rencken confirmed that a number of national tenants, the majority being fashion retailers, will be vacating the Ballito Lifestyle Centre from 19 March 2017. This equates to 26 tenants, 30% of the current tenant base. However, more than 70% of the tenant base will remain at Lifestyle Centre, including key anchor tenants Lifestyle SUPERSPAR, Woolworths Foodmarket, Lifestyle TOPS, Mica Home and Garden Centre and Alpha Pharmacy, thereby retaining over 80% of the centre’s retail turnover. To complement these existing key tenants, Rencken revealed the big brands that will be opening their doors at Lifestyle Centre this year: Dischem (1 600m2), Baby City (1 100m2), Sportsmans Warehouse (1 400m2) and Toy Zone (800m2). “These 4 big brands are closely aligned to our vision of providing everyday convenience and simplicity of shopping, and celebrating family and life the Ballito way,” he said. “The combined turnover of these four big brands will exceed the total turnover of fashion retailers leaving Lifestyle Centre. Furthermore, there are a number of other concluded deals and deals at advanced negotiations which will ensure that Lifestyle Centre retains its position as the neighbourhood convenience
centre in Ballito, with easy access, convenient and free parking, and a great selection of stores, to be enjoyed in our unique outdoor environment.” Rencken then revealed the strategy and detailed plans that he and his team have been working on over the past 18 months to redefine, reinvent and reposition Lifestyle Centre. “We were the dominant shopping centre in Ballito for 13 years but now the Ballito Junction is a reality and will play the role of a regional shopping centre,” he stated.
“We will now differentiate ourselves. We will NOT become a Value Centre, instead we will provide the discerning Ballito shopper with an upmarket, unique and experiential offering. Our focus will be on food, family fine-dining, an artisanal food market, boutique fashion and style, connecting friends and family, and everyday convenience.” The existing retail node running from Beira Alta and Zara’s Café to the Kiddies’ Wimpy site, will be redeveloped into a family fine-dining node, offering a choice of niche
restaurants in a cosmopolitan, street scene environment. As Rencken put it: “Picture a street scene with stunning architecture, attractive landscaping and hardscaping, outdoor seating, beautiful lighting, all topped with great food and superb service. It will be a celebration of life the Ballito way – the place where people meet, the place where families connect.” A permanent artisanal food market, a first for the South African market, will take shape in the area currently occupied by Mr Price clothing, Totalsports and Identity. Taking up 1600 m2 of retail space, the focus will be on quality artisanal food, everyday freshness and authenticity. Anchor tenants in this space will be an artisanal bakery, coffee roastery, craft brewery, free range butchery and organic fresh produce outlet. Shoppers can also look forward to purchasing fresh fish, chicken, deli meats and cheeses, ice cream and
waffles, either to take home or to consume on site in shared seating areas. Design of this space is set to be original, authentic and artisanal, bringing a uniqueness to the Lifestyle centre offering. There has also been a big focus on “local” with Lifestyle Centre partnering with a number of local personalities to bring this concept to life. “This is an ambitious idea,” said Rencken, “but we have done extensive homework and the buy-in from our market traders, entrepreneurs and existing tenants has been phenomenal, confirming that this is what Ballito wants and that we are indeed on the right track!” Timelines are tight, and building works significant, with the new stairwell and lifts from the underground parking due for completion by mid-April, the launch of Dischem, Sportmans Warehouse, Baby City and ToyZone being 1 September, and the completion of the restaurant node and artisanal food market due by 1 October. “The impact on Ballito Lifestyle Centre will be significant over the next 6 – 7 months,” said Rencken, “but our customers’ shopping experience is paramount and we will make every effort to preserve this. We will have a product which is much more focused on our target market and of which we are proud… and above all, which will trade at levels higher than we are currently achieving!” Rencken concluded.

Supplements & Superfoods to Save Your Health
STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
A
properly functioning, healthy body is a gift. Something to be valued and taken great care of. However, it is a sad fact of life that you never truly appreciate good health until it’s gone... Fortunately, if this is you, and disease or pain has robbed you, there are powerful supplements and superfoods to help accelerate your journey back to wellness.
ability to rid your body of unhealthy gut biofilm. An unhealthy gut biofilm prevents absorption of nutrients, protects disease causing micro-organisms from the immune system and antibiotics and antifungals, promotes inflammation, and houses toxins like heavy metals. Apple cider vinegar helps break through this unhealthy biofilm so you can properly absorb the nutrients you are ingesting, and get at any unwanted pathogens that may be causing you pain and suffering. ACV is particularly effective in the fight against candida overgrowth and parasitic infections.
6. Colostrum has incredible immune-balancing
Here are our top 10: 1. Astaxanthin (pronounced as-ta-zan-thin): Illness and inflammation typically go hand in hand which is why we often recommend Astaxanthin. It has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, without any negative side effects to accompany your typical OTC medications. Astaxanthin is also very beneficial for the eyes, brain, central nervous system, skin, immune system, and enhancing sports recovery.
2. Green Powders: Disease and pain are often caused by basic malnutrition or a deficiency of a specific nutrient. Green powders are nutrient dense superfood supplements that deliver a complex array of nutrients in a bioavailable format. The ingredients are often made up of organic vegetables, algaes, probiotics, and enzymes. Daily consumption of these superfood formulations is superior in regenerating and maintaining your health.
3. Reishi(Medicinal Mushrooms) is one of the most revered herbs in traditional Chinese Medicine, and for good reason! It is a highly adaptogenic and balancing herb, which significantly improves the body’s ability to handle stress, and thus enhances immune function.
4. Colloidal Silver is one of nature’s most powerful antibiotics that exerts a positive effect on the immune system when taken internally. Colloidal silver is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal, enhances the healing process, can restore diseased cells back to normality and is able to combat a variety of serious life threatening illnesses.
5. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is rich in enzymes which helps promote healthy bacteria, which in turn helps promote proper digestion. Another benefit is it’s
benefits. It contains a rich array of nutrients, including growth factors, lipidic and glucidic factors, oligosaccharides, antimicrobials, cytokines and nucleosides. These compounds help balance and stabilize the immune system, increase energy, reduce inflammation, promote normal cell growth, DNA synthesis, fat utilization and increased mental acuity. Other benefits include improved gut stability and nutrient absorption.
7. Vitamin D3 is a critical nutrient for optimal health.
function of natural killer (NK) cells, which are basically the “hit men” of the immune system that track and destroy tumour cells and other invaders. Vitamin C also enhances the functioning of neutrophils, lymphocytes and antibodies. Neutrophils fight bacterial infection by locating, engulfing and destroying the pathogen as well as cleaning up their oxidizing molecules. Lymphocytes produce antibodies in the immune system and assist in guiding other immune cells toward threats. Antibodies in the immune system assist in identifying and destroying invaders such as cancerous cells. The presence of vitamin C helps to raise antibody immunoglobulin levels to protect against infections. Our body cannot manufacture vitamin C on its own; so it must be obtained externally. That is why proper nutrition and supplementation is so important to ensuring optimal amounts.
Final Point: Please note that improving your health requires an overall lifestyle change, not just the addition of supplements (as amazing as they are). The goal is to enjoy life to its fullest, being mentally, spiritually and physically strong. THRIVE, not survive!
With sufficient levels, the body can produce its own natural antibiotic (cathelicidin) which engulfs and destroys unwanted intruders. D3 also helps regulate any immune system imbalances as well as improves general For more information on any of these products and expert advice, please function. Get your vitamin D3 status checked with regular blood tests before you supplement.
8. Probiotics help colonize your gut with friendly bacteria which is required for optimal digestion and balancing your inner ecosystem. Often an impaired gastrointestinal system is at the core of most health issues therefore supplementing with high-dose, quality probiotics can dramatically improve your immunity. Also when it comes to infection, probiotics also are your first line of defense. They help keep the gut and intestinal tract free of disease-causing germs as well as help detoxify the liver.
9. Turmeric(curcumin). A healthy liver promotes a healthy immune system. The liver lymphocyte population is enriched in macrophages called Kupffer cells which play a key role by capturing and digesting bacteria, fungi, parasites, worn-out blood cells, and cellular debris. Turmeric supports and improves liver function. Turmeric also dramatically reduces inflammation, (the root of all serious disease), as well as improves the behaviour of cellular membranes, making the cells more resistant to infection and malignancy. It even protects against radiation and exhibits strong anti-cancer properties.

RINGSIDE BOXING GYM
– WHAM, BAM…THANK YOU MAM!
T
hey say that in life you’ve only got three choices – give up, give in, or give it all you’ve got.
And in Ballito, if you mean business, you should pay a visit to the Ringside Boxing Gym sometime to see what giving it all you’ve got, looks like. Tyron Koen and his team are serious about producing champions. They do it every day. Here is where ordinary people become extraordinary. It’s a tough environment, make no mistake. This is no designer gym with all the gimmicks and gizmos for the pampered and cappuccinos to go…hell no, this is more like a scary movie to the uninitiated. Well-used heavy bags surround the ring that dominates the space. Boxing gloves and coloured wrapping strips are stacked on the far side ready for action. Upstairs the free weights glisten menacingly watched over by posters of the legends. The champions they produce here are everyday people. They come from all walks of life and from every sector of society but they have one thing in common – they are here to give it all they’ve got. And the results are there for all to see – record weight loss, total body transformation, glowing health and vitality and an enviable zest for life. You can see it in the eyes. It’s like they are on fire. Team Tyron is lean, mean and ready to get
busy… and busy is what this Boxing Gym is all about. The morning and afternoon group sessions are packed with champions in the making, all giving it their best under the close supervision of the Team. Former boxing professionals Tyron Koen and Sean Steyn set the pace for training on an epic scale with Winston Ngilazi and Keegan Marsden in support. You won’t find a better all-round conditioning regime – the boxing gym literally incorporates every But the heart and soul of the gym has a feminine touch – Kate Koen is the boss…and if there is any doubt, just ask anyone who has signed up on a 12 week challenge. Kate’s recipe of tough love and total support has produced awesome results and although she can be scarier than the guys, everyone loves her! The essence of the Ringside Boxing Gym is the feeling of gritty authenticity. In a world
where plastic, mirrors and LEDs predominate, the Boxing Gym stands apart in its rugged simplicity. This is as close as you will get to the feeling of the real thing…and it’s thrilling. Possibly its biggest attraction lies in the all-pervading sense of welcome that all who arrive here enjoy. There is a genuine warmth and friendliness at the gym that instantly banishes the trepidation you feel as a newcomer and within minutes you are part of the family. DOMINIQUE & BRETT ROUX
Meet the power couple behind Tree Natural Concept - a WELLNESS CONCEPT STORE
combining TREE YOGA, a BEAUTIFUL HOLISTIC YOGA STUDIO, and TREE CAFE, a CAFE SERVING DELICIOUS COFFEES, SMOOTHIES, JUICES and HEALTHY LIGHT MEALS. Dom and Brett own Tree Natural Concept, a Cafe & Yoga Sudio in Umhlanga and will be opening a branch of Tree Natural Cafe in the Ballito Junction soon.
1. How long have you been together? 3 years 2. Children? We are expecting a little boy, arriving in May. 3. Where do you both work? We own a wellness concept called Tree – a health café, health store and yoga studio 4. How does this influence your lives together? We have an unusual dynamic where we work together as husband and wife, this makes finding personal time that much more important which is vital for a successful relationship – but that said, our working relationship is very strong and if anything has brought us closer together as a couple. 5. If you had to share the “secret” to having a healthy family life what would it be? There are no secrets really; being with one another is a pleasure. It’s easy to prioritize the other person because it’s a pleasure putting them first.. 6. What do you each bring to the table that makes you so effective as a power couple? Domi is very kind, nurturing and very social. She loves people and being around loved ones. She brings a love and softness to our home and marriage that gives me a calmness and contentness. Brett is both strong and gentle and finds a beautiful balance in life. He sees life as a continuous adventure and his brave and adventurous spirit allows him to make the most out of everything in life, always learning, always passionate and willing to try new things. His confidence is admirable and zest for life infectious. He teaches me (and others) to have the courage to pursue our passions and be brave because life is a gift. Together we constantly learn from each other, appreciate the small things and continue to believe that life is an adventure. This makes us happiest and stongest as a couple.
7. What is your favourite thing to do as a couple? Adventuring and exploring, spending time in nature and sharing our love for nature with our loved ones and then of course regular beach walks and quality time with our French bulldogs aka ‘Piggies’ 8. Do you have any tips/ advice/ wise words on how to be happy and healthy (in body, mind and soul) for 2017? Find balance. Don’t neglect your passions. Create a relationship with food and health that is sustainable but most importantly one that brings you joy. Being healthy doesn’t mean you have to suffer through inedible meals or crazy fitness regimes. Health is as much in your mind as it is in your physical being, so treat yourself and eliminate stress wherever possible, because life is meant to be enjoyed, The key to balance is finding a sustainable approach to wellness that will last a lifetime. 9. Anything you would like to add? Make time for people you love, if possible make your career your passion and never underestimate the value of a walk on the beach or in nature.

Our wedding
W
as set in the sand forest in Phinda Private Game Reserve. Phinda simply is a second home to us. (My parents must have over 250 visits to their name). It’s where I fell in love with nature as a young boy and where Domi was bitten by the bush bug. It’s also where we got engaged in September 2015. It was the only place that felt right for us to exchange our vows and most importantly it was an opportunity for us to share the magical place with family and friends.
Our wedding weekend was set over 2 days. The first night the boys and girls spilt up and went on game drives and bush and boma dinners. This set the tone and built into the excitement for the next day. Our ceremony was set under and old Torchwood Tree in a natural cathedral in the ancient sand forest. Our “Bush Priest” were old friends who live on the reserve. Seth and Dumi are an old ranger/tracking duo that taught me how to track as an early teen. It felt fitting that two men with such a close bond to nature lead a ceremony in a place that means so much to both them and us. The ceremony started with a dear friend and former Plush lead singer Rory Eliot playing guitar and singing a song chosen by us for Domi’s wedding march (20 Years - Augustana) while Domi’s uncle, Allan, accompanied him on violin. It was a magical moment. The weather was perfect - 28 degrees and not a breath of wind. It was cool for our guests under the canopy of the forest. After the ceremony the guests had a 1.5km bush stroll back to Forest Lodge. Along the way they were treated to personalised craft beers, champagne
stations and ice creams. The welcome back to the lodge was a group of talented Zulu dancers and drummers where some brave guests decided to take part. It was important to us that while we were having our photos the guests were having fun. We arranged a post ceremony band to play (The kickstands) in the open vlei outside Forest Lodge. The guests could kick back, enjoy the music, relax on couches and indulge in canapes, a gin station, a bubbly bar and a charcuterie spread. Again the weather treated everyone to a perfect African sunset in the bush and then shortly followed by a rising full moon. It was idyllic. The reception was a giant bush dinner. The menu included a roasted plum tomato and basil soup , a build your own salad station, an off the coals mains menu that comprised of Lemon and herb chicken with a salsa Verde, slow roasted leg of lamb with a rosemary jus, chickpea, spinach and butternut curry and poached Kingklip with lime, coconut, coriander and ginger. Veggies were a selection of Sweet potato fondant, Honey glazed carrots and Sautéed green beans. Dessert was an almost criminally decadent chocolate fudge with white truffles, berries and caramel ice cream. After the formalities and speeches the first dance took place under the African Sky, surrounded by our friends all holding giant sparklers while “Crack the Shutters” by Snow Patrol played. Our dance didn’t get past a few spins and twirls before everyone joined us and danced the night away under the full moon to old school classics and a few Johnny Clegg anthems (all fuelled by tequila and happiness!) The Zululand humidity eventually had the last laugh and by 4:30 am the entire bridal party had made its way to the swimming pool to eventually wind down the greatest night of our lives.

ALBERLITO HOSPITAL UPDATE
ONLINE
L
ast month Life & Style started an investigation into various complaints from members of the public about treatment they had received at the Alberlito Hospital. We have to date received correspondence from a number of people with details of their experiences. From the information compiled so far it is obvious that there have been issues of concern and Dave Charles, Editor of Life & Style paid a visit to the new General Manager, Dr Augusta Dorning, to discuss these.
It is in the interests of everyone in Ballito to have a good private hospital in the neighbourhood and it is encouraging to see that Netcare, the company that operates the Alberlito Hospital, is taking measures to improve service at Alberlito. The appointment of Dr Dorning is a good start. She has an excellent track record having managed St Augustine’s Hospital before taking on the task at
DAMAGE AT THE DUNES DAVE CHARLES
F
ollowing on from Paradise Lost – Or Just another Development, the article on development in Ballito that appeared in our previous issue, a situation has arisen on the site adjacent to the proposed new development that casts an interesting light on the matter.
Several months ago I was involved in an altercation with Ricky Pulverenti of Sanhall Property Developments, who was upset that I had discussed his development in Ballito, The Dunes, on the Afternoon Drive on Radio Life & Style. In correspondence received he indicated that I had made what his legal representative called defamatory statements about certain aspects of the project. I responded that I had done no such thing. The comments I made on the show concerning his development were based purely on my observations and as freedom of speech is still permitted under the constitution when last I checked, I was simply expressing my point of view. Mr Pulverenti was invited to discuss this on air but declined the invitation. Now, further development is proposed in this area which is topographically challenging and would appear unsuited to development of this nature. Removing vegetation and cutting deeply into sandy hillsides can result in catastrophic collapse should adverse conditions prevail and, as can be seen from pictures supplied to us following several days of inclement weather, this has occurred at The Dunes. Mr Pulverenti’s legal representative has requested that I make it clear that his client obtained town planning, topographical and environmental approval before construction commenced and that I should in no way defame his reputation or business in this article. I have no desire to do either. Life & Style as a media brand actively supports responsible development in the region and, as such, plays an important role in the marketing of Brand Ballito. Our role as media is to present fact and fair comment - to inform, entertain and, in a sense, to educate the community we serve. I take no pleasure in what has transpired at the Dunes and I hope that Mr Pulverenti is able to rehabilitate his building site to prevent further mishap from occurring. I urge the developers of the adjacent sites to take heed of what nature is capable of to avoid similar mishap.
08 - 21 March 2017 Alberlito and her hands-on approach will hopefully yield positive results. While we fully understand the protocol for patient confidentiality and will therefore not elaborate on individual cases, there have been instances where medical and nursing care has been inadequate, cleaning has apparently been an issue and issues like cell phone use, noise levels and general discipline has been problematic. We are compiling a dossier of individual cases that will be of benefit to Dr Dorning in her task to get Alberlito back to where it should be as a hospital of excellence in the region and will keep you informed of developments as they occur. If you would like to add your concerns to the report, please send the information in the strictest confidence to editor@lifeandstyle. org.za

Happy New Hair BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY Now that the ‘back-to-work’, ‘back-to-school’ frenzy has subsided, you may well be looking to take back control of your life and put your stamp on 2017 – and what better way to begin than by treating yourself to a mini-makeover with the latest in new-look hair? To help you on your way, here are six new styles that have been tipped by an international magazine to be ‘it’ for 2017: 1) It’s time to break out your trusty flat-iron and smooth your hair into a centre parting for this sleek, deceptively-simple but sophisticated look. One word of warning: make sure your hair is in peak condition as this style does not work well with tired and driedout tresses. Remember to use a treatment mist for extra shine and protection to ensure longer-lasting loveliness. 2) The high ponytail never goes out of vogue and this season is no exception. This is a great look as it accentuates the cheekbones and works equally well with sleek, straight hair or carefree curls. An additional bonus is that this style offers a fun and fashionable solution to the frizz-factor caused by Durban’s hot and humid summer weather!
5) Volume has made a comeback in 2017 and the easiest way to achieve this is the good old-fashioned ‘flip’. Let your hair dry and then simply flip it over to the other side of its natural fall, giving it body and bounce and all the ‘oomph’ you could want! A touch of hair-spry can be applied for extra hold and you are set to take on the world! 6) Gold has ousted last season’s more muted grey-blond in the colour stakes and, if applied correctly, your hair should appear goldenbrown in some lights. It is important to make sure that you have the right skin-tone to carry this off, however, so consult your stylist before boldly ‘going for gold’!
3) Last year’s ‘shag’ gets an update with hair that sweeps to just below your shoulders, teamed with a centre-parted fringe that frames your cheekbones. This cut has the added advantages of enabling you to grow out your layers a tad as well as allowing for better ‘up-dos’.
Whatever style you select to celebrate this year, remember that looking good comes from feeling good, so take time to take care of yourself!

4) Ultra-long extensions are here to stay for another season. Think Cher, with her trademark long, straight, sleek fall of hair, although these very long extensions also work well with wavy hair. Just make sure that your hair is well-conditioned!

WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE BALLITO PROMENADE
A
?
n urgent meeting between First Resorts and the KwaDukuza Municipality scheduled for Monday to address concerns over the imminent closure of the Ballito Promenade outside the La Montagne Hotel has been postponed. First Resorts Director Tim Spencer has told Life & Style that due to escalating security breaches they are taking steps to protect their guests by securing the front of their premises through which the present promenade runs. They have offered to pay for the design and construction of a walkway around their premises that would allow for uninterrupted public use of the popular boulevard, but so far this measure has not received council approval.
Members of the public have been alarmed at sight of a barrier of steel poles that is being erected and the clearance of bush outside the hotel in preparation for the closure. The Ratepayers Association DOCRRA has received an undertaking from First Resorts that the work would be put on hold until the crucial meeting to resolve the matter takes place. The meeting is expected to take place this week following a legal notice issued on behalf of the KwaDukuza Municipality. Mayor Ricardo Mthembu has committed to speeding up the process of communication in this regard. Radio Life & Style will keep you informed of developments as they occur.

s we all know a healthy lifestyle is about balance, henceforth the contribution of one healthy recipe as well as a treat or something more indulgent. The Quinoa cake recipe is one that has evolved in our kitchen. It’s our take on a recipe from one of Yotem Ottolenghi’s books, we are obsessed with his style of cooking. We changed it in that we went the gluten free direction with this one with the quinoa. Quinoa is a very versatile pseudo-grain, it’s actually classified as a seed and not a grain, but works just as well in salads, granolas and these little cakes as, say, a cous cous. The Quinoa cakes are a super easy addition to a meal, perfect as a ‘Meat free Monday’ dinner or light
lunch with a salad. Then onto the more indulgent side with the white chocolate and berry tart. We are still relishing the last of the gorgeous juicy summer berries, and what better way to counteract the tart berries than with this creamy, smooth and rich white chocolate filling, and crisp buttery pastry! This tart laden with colourful berries and nuts adds that essential ‘wow factor’ to any dinner party and despite looking like quite a mission to make, is actually very simple. You’re guests will think that you are the ultimate domestic god or goddess. Happy cooking everyone, and enjoy! Rebecca & Kate

Due to global Takata Airbag recall campaign, Mitsubishi announces local recall campaign on 7,449 Pajeros
M
itsubishi Motors SA (MMSA) has issued a preventative recall on 7,449 Pajeros in the South African market for safety inspections and replacement of driver airbags.
Mitsubishi is one of several vehicle manufacturers affected by the potentially defective airbag inflators manufactured by Takata, OEM airbag supplier to Mitsubishi and various other automotive brands. MMSA is currently busy contacting owners to arrange and co-ordinate the timing of the service inspections where airbags will be replaced at no cost. Replacement parts first need to be distributed to dealers countrywide before customers will be asked to take their vehicles to their respective dealers. The inspection and replacement procedure will take approximately one hour. A simple online VIN-checker with a FAQ-section is available on the company’s website (www.mitsubishi-motors.co.za/recall) for Pajero owners who want to check if their vehicles are affected.

Toyota RAV4 Still Top Choice
FORTUNER BRINGS MORE BLING
The Toyota RAV4 remains one of South Africa’s favourite Sport Utility Vehicles, racking up over 400 units on a monthly basis; it has established itself as one of the segment leaders in this competitive marketplace.
I
t can be argued that alloy wheels make one of the most significant contributions to a vehicle’s aesthetics.
On this note, all 2.8 GD-6 and 4.0 V6 Fortuner models are now equipped with striking 18” alloy wheels. Replacing the previously employed 17” version, the new alloys are fitted with 265/60/R18 rubber and make use of distinctive counter-flowing spokes, with a machined finish accentuating the dual-dimensional design. The entry-level 2.7 VVTi and 2.4 GD-6 models retain the stylish 17” ‘dual rib’ alloy wheels.
The latest models enjoy some exciting enhancements. The VX grade received a boost in safety specification with the addition of Lane Change Assist. This system also incorporates Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with a convenient indicator housed within the exterior mirrors. Making shopping mall parking manoeuvres less stressful is the Cross Traffic Alert function, which warns the driver of approaching vehicles when ‘alley docking’. THIS ELECTRONIC SUITE OF FEATURES INCLUDES;
LUXURIOUS LEATHER As an additional bonus, the 2.7 VVTi and 2.4 GD-6 Fortuner derivatives are furnished with leather interior trim, replacing the current textile offering. This luxurious appointment is provided at no cost to the customer, boosting the already high-value proposition significantly. It’s also worth noting that the Fortuner is the only SUV in its class to offer such an attractive, entry-level price point as well as such a high standard of equipment.
9 Airbags incl. driver knee ABS + EBD + BA Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) Hill Assist Control (HAC) Trailer Sway Control (TSC) Downhill Assist Control (DAC) on 4WD models ISOFIX
The ‘specification tailoring’ continues with the inclusion of stylish foot-well lighting, bolstering both aesthetics and convenience, and deletion of the sunroof. The model line-up continues as before with three engines (two petrol and one diesel) and both 2WD and AWD derivatives on offer. Customers electing for the GX grade have the choice between a 2.0-litre petrol powerplant (in both 6-speed manual and CVT guise driving the front wheels) and a 2.2-litre turbodiesel paired with the 6-speed manual transmission, offering AWD. VX buyers have a choice between a super refined 2.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine and a ‘torquey’ 2.2-litre diesel variant - both driving through a 6-speed automatic transmission with driver-selectable AWD.
