orgive me forrattling on a bit but I need to set the record straight on a matter of some concern. I am the editor of this publication and founder of Radio Life & Style, Ballito’s own radio station. I am also the chairman of the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (DOCRRA). This was an entirely unplanned move that came about in a bid to rescue the Association from collapse when the former committee resigned with no successors in place. I and a handful of others at that fateful almost final Annual General Meeting volunteered to try to keep the Association going because if it folded then, it would be almost impossible to reconstitute it in the present political climate. We are a volunteer based committee that serves in terms of the National Constitution, as the fourth tier of Government.
So, why you might ask, do we need an association like this faced with the general apathy that affluent South Africa of a particular bent shows towards working together for the common good? It’s a reasonable question. Why would anyone give up their time and whatever personal resources required to work for a community resource like this? Unlike local political ward committees and councillors, we receive no financial incentive or compensation for our efforts and it seems hard to believe that anyone would do this simply because they believe that by helping to build a strong ratepayers association, they can make a positive difference to the lives of all in the community. But we
understand that by building a strong association like this we will ensure that our assets, investment and lifestyle here will be protected. Without it, there is nothing to keep the goose that lays the golden egg from being squeezed to death. We are lucky to have a municipality that is working well at present and that has agreed to cooperate with the Association to clean, green and protect what we share. There are some fine examples around the country of ratepayers associations that are delivering excellent results to the benefit of all in their respective communities. I am particularly impressed with what had been achieved by the Parkhurst community and I encourage you to take a look at their website http://parkhurstvillage.com for some inspiration. With the resources and skills that our community has, we could be doing the same. But strangely, the notion of the benefits of supporting the association that is legally mandated by central and local government to represent your interests when it comes to rates and services in this community has yet to be grasped by many. It’s not surprising, really. The association has received some bad press in the past, some of it ill-informed and all of it unhelpful. Yes, there were overtones that served us poorly in the past. Yes, there were personality conflicts in the association that created animosity and dissent in certain quarters. But there was also some good work done that delivered benefits to the community without much acknowledgement in the media. But we can do so much more.

There is a new committee in place that is now more representative of the complex nature of our society and, more importantly, ready to represent your interests on any number of matters if you will give us your support. We have heard alarming news of an imminent rates increase that will have a significant impact on the greater Ballito region unless moderated - and the only organisation legally constituted and recognised to fight for you in this regard is DOCRRA. But unless you and your friends and neighbours join us – unless we truly have the weight of the community behind us, our bargaining position will be insignificant. For R100 per year, and an open invitation to join us in whatever capacity you choose, this is the best investment you will ever make in protecting and improving your lifestyle here. Going forward we will be rebranding the association to reflect its new direction and focus. I urge you to visit www.docrra.co.za and join us today and together we really can do so much more to securing a better lifestyle for all.

A Home Away From Home Joe Erasmus – Ashton College
I
have often come across Parents who commute between Durban and Gauteng and wondered about their lifestyle, the early morning, the flight and then the return. Well I am experiencing it with a weekly trip up to our sister College in Benoni. It is truly amazing that when I step onto the campus of our Benoni School, I feel completely at home, surrounded by the Ashton ethos and spirit. The uniforms are the same, the buzz and the vibe are the same. It took very little time for me to realise that this is Home away from Home. The buildings and surroundings are very different but yet there is that similarity of core-values, Christian ethos, family orientated and educational driven cohesion of professional staff and motivated students.
Between the two Colleges we have 2141 students and 243 staff members. The unique difference from most Independent Schools is that our teachers have the qualifications to teach both IEB and CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) curriculi. In most instances they specialise in only one curriculum, but otherwise they teach both but timetabled at different times. One of the biggest advantages of CIE is the low ratio of teacher/student, where an

uying a property is probably the biggest and most important investment you will ever make.
It requires a lot of time and effort, but the following process can assist you in making buying a house manageable. 1. Research The sooner the better! Start reading newspapers, magazines and websites that have real estate listings. Property 24 and Private Property are excellent websites with vast property information. Make notes of properties you are interested in and see how long they stay on the market. Also, note any changes in asking prices. This will give you a sense of the housing trends in specific areas. 2. Determine your Affordability Banks and Financial Institutions generally recommend that people look for homes that cost no more than three to five times their annual household income, if the home buyers plan to make a 20% down payment and have a moderate amount of other debt. But you should make this determination based on your own financial situation. Use affordability calculators to determine what you can afford. Remember to enquire about additional costs such as rates, transfer and bond costs. 3. Prequalify Before you start looking for a home, you will need to know how much you can realistically spend. The best way to do that is to get prequalified for a bond. To get prequalified, you just need to provide some financial information to your property finance specialist such as Ooba or mortgage banker. This will indicate to you the price range of the homes you should be looking at. 4. Correct Real Estate Agent Real estate agents are important partners when you’re buying or selling a home. Harcourts Dolphin Coast Real estate agents can provide you with helpful information on homes and neighbourhoods that isn’t easily accessible to the public. Their knowledge of the home buying process, negotiating skills, and familiarity with the greater Ballito area you want to live in can be extremely valuable. And best of all, it doesn’t cost you anything to use us. 5. Search for Your Property and present a written Offer Start viewing properties in your price range. It might be helpful to take notes of all the homes you visit. You will see a lot of houses! It can be hard to remember everything about them, so you might want to take pictures or video to help you remember each home. Make sure to check out the little details of each house. For example: Test the plumbing by running the shower to see how strong the water pressure is and how long it takes to get hot water Try the electrical system by turning switches on and off Open and close the windows and doors to see if they work properly Ensure that the seller has up to date approved plans from his/her local municipality. It’s also important to evaluate the neighbourhood and make a note of things such as: Are the other homes on the block

Every home buyer has their own priorities when choosing a mortgage. Some are interested in keeping their monthly payments as low as possible. Others are interested in making sure that their monthly payments never increase. Others pick a loan based on the knowledge they will be moving again in just a few years. Harcourts Dolphin Coast recommends OOBA as their preferred bond originator. 8. Property Appraisal Lenders will arrange for an appraiser to provide an independent estimate of the value of the house you are buying. The appraiser is a member of a third- party company and is not directly associated with the lender. The appraisal will let all the parties involved know that you are paying a fair price for the home. 9. Close the Sale At closing, you will sign all the paperwork required to complete the purchase, including your loan documents. It typically takes a couple of days for your loan to be funded after the paperwork is returned to the lender. The seller is entitled to nominate the transfer attorney who will begin the conveyancing process. 10. Conveyancing Process The current bondholder advises the amount required to settle the existing bond and instructs an attorney to attend to the cancellation of the existing bond. The bank where the purchaser is getting a bond from instructs an attorney to register the new bond. The purchaser pays the deposit (if applicable) and conveyancer’s costs. The conveyancers draw up documents and call on the purchaser and seller to sign. An electrical, entomologist and gas inspection is carried out and certificates are issued if all is in order. The costs for these inspections are for the sellers account. Guarantees for the balance of the purchase price are issued by the bank who granted the purchaser a bond.

J
uggling high-pressured jobs with starting families and maintaining social lives is leaving our generation highly anxious.
So what if there was a simple three-minute solution for clearing your mind and erasing your worries instantly? According to meditation coach, Emmy-Lou Knowles, anyone can master it. ‘When worry kicks off and stress kicks in, you need to make space. You don’t need incense, candles or to be sat legs crossed on the floor – let’s be realistic.’ Emmy-Lou explains that all you need to do is close your eyes or simply stare at a fixed point if you are at your desk for example and place your feet flat on the floor for stability. Next, turn all focus to pulling in your breath, sucking the oxygen deep into your belly through the nose as though pulling breath in through two straws up the nostrils. Then, simply sigh. ‘A sigh is wonderful as it’s effectively telling the body that we are going to hit the reset button on the pattern,’ she said. Then start counting the breath in and out through the nose as per the breathing ritual in the pink box. Emmy Lou says you should repeat this eight times - or at whichever number feels good and comfortable for you - visualising and allowing the shoulders, eyes, mouth and brow to soften.
THE BREATHING RITUAL - In for one, out for one - In for two, out for two - In for three, out for three - In for four, out for four - In for five, out for five - In for six, out for six - In for seven, out for seven - In for eight and out for eight

s the region continues to grow, so does the need for a vibrant ratepayers association to ensure effective service delivery for a cleaner, greener and more secure environment. This will protect the value of your assets here and offer you a significant say in municipal service delivery, security matters, rates increases and everything else that affects the general quality of life here. DOCRRA has undergone a complete metamorphoses with a view to rebuilding the association as a strong lobby group to protect the interests of the residents and ratepayers of the greater Ballito region. The current committee is energetic, tech savvy, and keen to contribute to improving the image of our region with support from
the community. The Urban Improvement Precinct is doing excellent work in the commercial nodes that it is privately funded to deliver in. If fully supported, DOCRRA will work in tandem with the UIP and other civic groups to ensure quality service delivery in all sectors. If the Association has little public support in the form of membership numbers, it will achieve very little. It is important for everyone to understand that DOCRRA represents your best hope of keeping rates increases in check, and looking after your general interests in this community. It is YOUR association and membership gives you a say in what happens here. The best way to lose this opportunity is to defer from joining it because you don’t see the value. Things are working relatively well here at present but this can and probably will change. Your support for DOCRRA will ensure that your best interest will be represented. We need you to join up

usinesses want to hire employees who stand out from the crowd so it is important that your interview is memorable for all the right reasons.
Career expert John Lees, author of Knockout Interview, has revealed 10 tips on how to set yourself apart, from engaging small talk to a powerful closing statement. While some might seem obvious, others will give even the most experienced professionals pause for thought. ‘At the end of a full day interviewing candidates, most recruiters admit that they have forgotten most interview performances,’ Mr Lees said. ‘People who receive job offers give something beyond clichéd answers and “vanilla” evidence. Employers can find average candidates without breaking into a sweat, but they’re looking for something extra.’ INITIAL IMPACT First impressions count. And it is never truer than in an interview. In the opening 20 seconds the interviewer will make judgments based on a range of signals, including how easily you make conversation. Mr Lees said: ‘So start off clearly, confidently and positively - even if the first question is about the weather, or your journey.’ LISTEN HARD It might seem straightforward, but the wording of the question being asked might be slightly different to the one you are expecting.
‘It’s easy under stress to listen ineffectively, so keep your “radar” switched on throughout,’ said Mr Lees. BE CONCISE Interviewers are busy so don’t waste their time by waffling. Mr Lees said: ‘Short answers, focused on the needs of the job, help interviewers to get through their checklist, and allow time for probing of facts.’ COMMUNICATE ENERGY There are no points for appearing underwhelmed or disengaged. Explain with enthusiasm what attracted you to the role and how it fits your career goals. MAKE SENSE OF YOUR SKILLS You will understand all the ins-and-outs of your current role, but your potential employer might not. Show how your skills transfer by explaining them in language which is both relevant and exciting to an employer. AVOID BEING PREDICTABLE While interview questions might sometimes be predictable, that does not mean your answers need to be. ‘Interviewers have heard all the clichés from candidates claiming to be team players and winners,’ Mr Lees said. Try to think of original ways to phrase your responses. TELL STORIES Make yourself stand out by turning dull facts into interesting stories that interviewers will remember long after you left the room. To ensure you don’t
urgently to create a critical mass that will get things moving quickly in the right direction.

SHARE KEY MESSAGES Decide on three-four key points you are going to get across during the interview, even if the relevant questions aren’t asked. he Ballito Junction Regional Shopping Mall has ushered in a new chapter in the story of the growth of the Dolphin Coast. Consumers in the region are now spoiled for choice with an unprecedented range of attractions and the excitement is palpable. There is concern in the retail trade that the local economy is not big enough to fully support all that is currently on offer, but there is confidence in the fact that at the current pace of growth in the region, this will be a relatively short term challenge. The spinoff of this development to the local economy is significant with the creation of hundreds of new jobs bringing increased revenue to the region and adding impetus to the increase in local property values. For the residents of Ballito and surrounding areas the Ballito Junction ushers in a bonanza of fashion, food, fun and entertainment on a scale never seen before adding another glittering facet to Brand Ballito.

OLALA INTERIORS | Living the Dream
O
LALA INTERIORS has been making homes beautiful for 24 years this year. Their successful projects traverse oceans and borders, and last year alone they installed 35 projects from Clifton to Johannesburg. Partners Schanè Anderson and Debbie Steinhobel combine considerable talent and experience and have established OLALA Schanè Anderson & INTERIORS as a leading Debbie Steinhobel interior design company in KZN. Having established their own factory to custom produce furniture and interior detail pieces
OLALA INTERIORS raises the
benchmark with every project. The OLALA team is vibrant, creative, professional and approachable. Fluidity in design and a mass of knowledge gleaned from experience and travel, allows them to offer a beautiful and enriching result for their clients. Schanè Anderson says “We have worked really hard to become and establish ourselves as leaders in our industry. To do that we had to develop a clear identity and robust vision, and have been making audacious statements in the design arena. Being bold and authentic, has earned us the respect of our clients and contemporaries.” Dave Nemeth, well-respected South African Trend Forward Specialist says “Their work is on a completely different level. OLALA INTERIORS is without a doubt one of the most exciting interior design companies in Africa. They should be very proud of the work they are doing!” “Travelling has given us such an advantage” adds Debbie Steinhobel. The duo has twice been invited by Romo International, the international textile house in Paris, to meet international design gurus and enjoy sneak previews of international design trends. They also attended design seminars at the Cologne IMM – the largest kitchen and furniture show in the world. OLALA INTERIORS has enjoyed extensive publicity and just in the last few months, they have again been featured on Top Billing and in magazines such as Garden & Home and SA Home Owner. To top it off, two of their houses were featured in HABITAT magazine – one getting the Front Page! Watch out for the next issue of VISI magazine, where OLALA is featured in a 10 page article. OLALA INTERIORS collaborates closely with leading architects and they have lent their expertise to a number of high end residential and leisure developments. “When our clients build homes, it is advisable that we are engaged from the start, as we assist with all design elements from kitchen, bathrooms, plumbing and
electrical lay-outs etc. We develop those alongside the functional furniture lay-outs which we custom make. Our manufacturing division is responsible for cabinetry to world class standards and this gives us flexibility when designing and fitting out interiors for our clients.” says Schane. “We’re really very excited to be opening our doors in the new Ballito Junction” says Debbie. “We have been looking forward to having our design studio and showroom under one roof again, and can’t wait to have our clients pop in for a cup of tea in our fabulous new 500m2 showroom. Our design studio sits on an industrial mezzanine, so all will be easily accessible.” OLALA INTERIORS stocks fabulous brands like Carrol Boyes, Yankee Candles, Voluspa, and are stockists for lighting brands such as LumiArt, KLight, Spazio, Euro Nouveau, and off course the internationally acclaimed moooi. OLALA INTERIORS is situated right next to Exclusive Books on the street level, so it is easily accessible for clients who want to quickly pop in. With OLALA all your creative dreams can become a reality.

HEIRLOOM SEEDS – A CORNUCOPIA OF ALMOST FORGOTTEN TASTES AND FLAVOURS
T
he terms heirloom or heritage seed refers to open pollinated seeds that have been handed down from generation to generation - generally a variety that is at least 40-50 years old, is usually no longer available in the commercial seed trade and that has been preserved and kept true in a particular region.

Obviously, these heirloom varieties have been saved because they have some real virtues to the home gardener. Classic examples would be heirloom tomatoes, which often have superior flavour, colour or texture for home garden situations but might lack the holding ability (shelf life), uniform colour and shape, disease resistance or early maturity that would make them commercially viable. Seed saving organizations and home gardeners have been the agents that have kept heirloom varieties in existence over time, as larger seed companies generally focus on hybrid varieties with commercial qualities. There is a surprisingly vast range of fruit and vegetable seeds available to purchase online in South Africa – so vast that you will be amazed at the massive variety of tastes, flavours and colours that you have yet to experience. This is the most exciting way to unlock the goodness of the earth and develop a hobby that is rewarding in so many ways. www.seedsforafrica.co.za/heirloom

DAVE CHARLES
S
ue Henderson and Debbi Smith are members of the Forest Hills Dog Club that meets in Townsend Park in Ballito every Saturday morning. This is where dogs of all descriptions come with their owners to learn basic obedience in a relaxed and happy atmosphere.
The club has been run for many years by Gaby Lyle. Gaby is utterly charming and has a huge heart for the community. As Chairperson of the Christmas Fair Fund she has worked tirelessly to raise funds for deserving charities in the region and her cooking classes for domestic workers were legendary! It was Gaby who told me about an incident at the club recently that caused quite a stir. Sue Henderson is the owner of a little grey terrier called Tessi. She had wanted a dog for a while and decided to adopt one that really needed a home so she visited the local SPCA pound to see what was on offer. It was there, amongst the waifs and strays that she found a little grey terrier. This was Tessi. She had been in the kennels for longer than the time allotted to rescue animals, and the grim spectre of euthanasia was hanging over her like a shroud. Perhaps this is what prompted Sue to adopt her, or perhaps it was just that gentle look in the eye. And so the deal was done. But as overjoyed as the little dog was to be wanted again, she seemed reluctant to leave. Sue remembers that there was another dog in the kennel that she considered adopting – there was a kind of bond between them, but pragmatism forced her hand and she was sad to leave it behind, knowing that it had also been there longer than was safe. Tessi turned out to be as bright as a button and so Sue enrolled her for classes
at the Forest Hills Dog Club. It was at one of these morning sessions a few weeks later that a strange thing occurred. A new dog arrived for the class and Tessi just went wild. The new dog was Milo, a pretty corgi type that was now yipping and yapping and frantically trying to get away from her owner, Debbi Smith, to reach the exuberant little terrier. Debbie had been to the SPCA sometime after Sue’s
visit and was taken by an intelligent, rather sad looking little dog that was watching her intently. She wasn’t a young dog and she had been here for some time. Unless fate intervened, she would almost certainly be put down soon, so, Debbi took her home. Milo is the best dog she’s ever owned, she said, but at that moment she was almost uncontrollable. The reason soon became clear. The dogs had shared a kennel at the SPCA pound where they had become really close. Now after weeks apart, they had been reunited… and they were overcome with joy. There are kind people among us and although stories like this don’t often find their way into the media, the world we share is a better place because of them.

Oldest Beetle in South Africa Fully Restored
V
the Beetle.
olkswagens automotive museum, AutoPavilion, has recently had an upgrade and one of its new displays is Jan
Jan was built on Wednesday, 14 September 1949 in the original Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg. In 1971 Volkswagen South Africa and Wheels magazine held a competition to find the oldest Beetle in South Africa. The winner was David Rubin of Middelburg, who received a brandnew 1300 Beetle in exchange for Jan the Beetle. After discovery in 1971, Jan went on display around South Africa before coming back home to rest at the Volkswagen factory in Uitenhage. However for a number of years, no one paid attention to Jan and he was left in storage as his condition had deteriorated and could not be displayed. That changed when Jan the Beetle was brought to the attention of another very special Jan at Volkswagen, namely Jan Schiedek-Jacht, the Head of Product Engineering at VWSA. Schiedek-Jacht, who is a classic car enthusiast and expert offered to give Jan a new lease on life. Soon, highly qualified engineers from Product Engineering at VWSA heard about Jan and offered to help. “The team under the leadership of Jan Schiedek-Jacht donated their spare time to fully restoring Jan and seven months later when a pristine looking car. I am humbled by the dedication, passion and love of our automotive heritage that this team has shown during the restoration of the Jan the Beetle,”
said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of VWSA. It was decided by the team that Jan would be restored to his original condition and colour. As many original components as possible were repaired and restored, and only where required were new components sourced from special dealers in South Africa, Germany and the US. Jan is now the jewel of the AutoPavilion vehicle collection. Thanks to his split rear windshield, Jan is the most desired little Beetle by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Jan proved that he is still fit for a jolly weekend drive after covering over 600 km to the George Motorshow early in February. This was his first drive after full restoration, exactly 67 years 4 months 10 days after he was built. Come and visit Jan at the AutoPavilion in Uitenhage and see some of the upgrades. The AutoPavilion is VWSA’s Automotive Experience Centre and Museum. Each year over 30 000 car enthusiasts, school children, tourists, families and friends visit the AutoPavilion.

onda Motor Southern Africa has announced a series of updates to its popular Ballade sedan. The changes have been designed to add further appeal to the successful model range.
Aesthetically, the 2017 Ballade benefits from redesigned front and rear bumpers, a revised grille, and new wheel designs. The changes emphasise the compact sedan’s sleek, aerodynamic shape, and add a fresh, contemporary look, especially to the front of the car. Daytime running lights are now standard across the entire Honda Ballade range, enhancing visibility and further emphasising the contemporary front-end styling of the sedan. The flagship Executive model gains LED headlights as standard. The exterior enhancements are accompanied by improvements to the Ballade’s interior execution. The surfaces, materials and finishes of the cabin have been updated, creating a smarter, sportier and more userfriendly impression with an even closer focus on overall quality. The Executive version is fitted with ergonomically efficient, fully automatic air-conditioning, leather
